LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
August 9, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Aug 10, 2024
When President Joe Biden announced that he would not accept the Democratic nomination for president and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on July 21—less than three weeks ago—the horizon for the 2024 presidential election suddenly shortened from years to about three months. That shift apparently flummoxed the Republicans, who briefly talked about suing to make sure that Biden, rather than Harris, was at the head of the Democratic ticket, even though the Democrats had not yet held their convention and Biden had not officially become the nominee when he stepped out of contention. Lately, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has suggested that Biden might suddenly, somehow, change his mind and upend the whole new ticket, although Biden himself has been strong in his public support for Harris and her vice-presidential running mate, Minnesota governor Tim Walz, and Democrats held a roll-call vote nominating Harris for the presidency.
The idea that presidential campaigns should drag on for years is a relatively new one. For well over a century, political conventions were dramatic affairs where political leaders hashed out who they thought was their party’s best standard-bearer, a process that almost always involved quiet deals and strategic conversations. Sometimes the outcome was pretty clear ahead of time, but there were often surprises. Famously, for example, Ohio representative James A. Garfield went to the 1880 Republican convention expecting to marshal votes for Ohio senator John Sherman—General William Tecumseh Sherman’s brother—only to find himself walking away with the nomination himself.
As recently as 1952, the outcome of the Republican National Convention was not clear beforehand. Most observers thought the nomination would go to Ohio senator Robert Taft, the son of President William Howard Taft, but after a tremendous battle—including at least one fist fight—the nomination went to war hero Dwight D. Eisenhower, who challenged Taft because of the senator's opposition to the new North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Taft supporters took that loss hard: Massachusetts senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. drove Eisenhower’s victory, prompting right-wing Republicans’ enduring hatred of what they called the “eastern establishment.”
The 1960 presidential election ushered in a new era in politics. While Eisenhower had turned to advertising executives to help him appeal to voters, it was 1960 Democratic nominee Massachusetts senator John F. Kennedy who was the first presidential candidate to turn to a public opinion pollster, Louis Harris, to help him adjust his message and his policies to polls.
Political campaigns were modernizing from the inside to win elections, but as important in the long run was Theodore H. White’s best selling account of the campaign, The Making of the President 1960. White was a successful reporter, novelist, and nonfiction writer who, finding himself flush from a movie deal and out of work when Collier’s magazine went under, decided to follow the inside story of the 1960 presidential campaign. “I want to get at the real guts of the process of making an American president—what the mechanics, the mystique, the style, the pressures are with which an American who hopes to be our President must contend,” White wrote to Senator Estes Kefauver (D-TN).
White set out to follow the campaigns of the many primary candidates that year: Democrats Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon Johnson, and John F. Kennedy and Republicans Richard Nixon and Nelson Rockefeller.
Before White’s book, political journalism picked up when politicians announced their candidacy, and focused on candidates’ public statements and position papers. White’s portrait welcomed ordinary people backstage to hear politicians reading crowds, fretting over their prospects, and adjusting their campaigns according to expert advice. In heroic, novelistic style, White told the tale of the struggle that lifted Kennedy to victory as the other candidates fell away, and his book spent 20 weeks at the top of the bestseller lists and won the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction.
White’s book emphasized the long process of building a successful presidential race and the many advisors who made such building possible. In the modern world a presidential campaign lasted far longer than the few months after a convention. In his intimate portrait of that process, White radically transformed political journalism. As historian John E. Miller noted, journalists who had previously covered the public face of a candidacy “now sought to capture in minute detail the behind-the-scenes maneuvering of the candidates and their strategy boards and to probe beneath the surface events of political campaigns to ascertain where the ‘real action’ lay.”
For journalists, seeing the inside story of politics as a sort of business meant leaving behind the idea that political ideology mattered in presidential elections, a position that political scientists were also abandoning in 1960. It also meant getting that inside story by preserving the candidates’ goodwill, something we now call access journalism. Other journalists leapt to follow the trail White blazed, and by 1973 the pack of presidential journalists had become a story in its own right. White told journalist Timothy Crouse that he had come to regret that his new approach to presidential contests had turned presidential campaigns into a circus.
Over time, presidential campaigns began to use that circus as part of their own story, spinning polls, rallies, and press coverage to convince voters that their candidate was winning. But now the 2024 election seems to be challenging the habit of seeing a presidential campaign as a long, heroic sifting of advice and application of tactics, as well as the perceived need for access to campaign principals.
Yesterday, apparently chafing as the Harris-Walz campaign turns out huge crowds, Trump called reporters to his company’s Florida property, Mar-a-Lago. Those determined not to miss any twist of the campaign—and who had enough advance notice to make it to Florida—listened to him serve up his usual banquet of lies: that doctors and mothers are murdering babies after they’re born; everyone wanted Roe v. Wade overturned, no one died on January 6, 2021; he loves autocrats and they love him; and so on. The journalists there did not ask him about the recent bombshell report suggesting that Egypt poured $10 million into his 2016 campaign.
But, as conservative writer Tom Nichols of The Atlantic noted, Trump appears nonetheless to have gone entirely off the rails. He claimed that the crowd he drew on January 6 was bigger than those who gathered in 1963 to hear the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his famous I Have a Dream speech, and he told the fabricated story of surviving an emergency landing in a helicopter with former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, a story that appears to have involved a different Black man, at a different time, and did not feature the conversation he recounted.*
As Nichols put it, “The Republican nominee, the man who could return to office and regain the sole authority to use American nuclear weapons, is a serial liar and can’t tell the difference between reality and fantasy. Donald Trump is not well. He is not stable. There’s something deeply wrong with him.”
But the media appears to be sliding away from Trump: today he angrily insisted he could prove that the dangerous helicopter trip actually occurred, leading New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman to note that “Mr. Trump has a history of claiming he will provide evidence to back up his claims but ultimately not doing so.” When asked to produce the flight records he claimed to have, Trump “responded mockingly, repeating the request in a sing-song voice.”
In contrast, as presidential candidates, first Biden and now Harris have not appeared to bother with access journalism or courting established media. Instead, they have recalled an earlier time by turning directly to voters through social media and by articulating clear policies that support their dedication to the larger project of American democracy.
Yesterday, after journalists had begun to complain that they did not have enough access to Harris, she came to them directly on the tarmac at the Detroit airport and asked, “What’cha got?” All but one of their questions were about Trump and his comments; the one question that was not about Trump came when a journalist asked when Harris would sit down for an interview.
*I corrected this sentence, which said the helicopter story was “entirely fabricated,” shortly after midnight on August 10, in light of a new story by Christopher Cadelago in Politico that says Nate Holden, a former city councilman and state senator from Los Angeles, says he was on a frightening helicopter ride with Trump at some point in the 1990s.

matthew sturniolo,
woke up the following morning in a frenzy. being one of four boys, his mom implemented a strict morning routine when the triplets started kindergarten, that they have been following right up until now, their senior year of high school. this morning however, matt was awoken about five minutes before he had to leave to the sound of chris and nick’s yelling to hurry his ass up. matt scrambled to pick out whatever clothes he could find, a pair of grey nike sweats and a fuzzy brown hoodie, and hurried downstairs to brush his teeth at record breaking speed before he was out the door heading the the mini van.
as he was throwing his and his brothers hockey bags into the trunk, he caught a glimpse of addilyn leaving her house and starting to walk down the block to the bus stop. as if his thoughts were being read, chris out loud wondered “what senior is still taking the bus?”
before matt could even open his mouth to make a rude comment, nick was already calling her over to offer a ride.
“dude what the fuck,” matt muttered under his breath to nick as addilyn approached the van, “i don’t wanna drive her.”
addilyn’s appearance totally switched from what she was wearing when matt saw her last night. her slim fitting dress was swapped out for a pair of mom jeans and an oversized sweater, her curly brown hair held back by a clip. “are you sure?” she breathed, looking at nick, “i’m okay with taking the bus, really.”
“we don’t mind at all, do we matt?” nick smiled through gritted teeth, nudging his brother in the arm.
“we don’t have time to mind,” chris interrupted them, climbing into the passenger seat, “we’re gonna be late.”
matt huffed, telling addilyn she could sit in the back seat with nick. he quickly plugged his phone into the aux cord, playing circles by mac miller as he backed out of the driveway and made his way to school.
*₊˚ 𓂃✧
it was only fourth period, and matt was already pissed off. the start to his day had been thrown off by waking up so late, and addilyn richardson being in his van this morning did not help one bit. he wasn’t sure what it was about that girl that bothered him so much. maybe it was the way she shut out the world by indulging herself in a book or in a drawing she was working on. or maybe it was the way her curls would stick up and fly away from the rest of her hair sometimes making her look like a mad scientist. or maybe it was the way she was the only girl who didn’t pay one ounce of attention to him. being the school’s best hockey player alongside his two other triplet brothers definitely made matt one of the most popular guys in school. he never had any trouble when it came to girls, because all of them already wanted him. except addilyn.
get yourself together man, she’s weird matt thought to himself as he entered his physics class, sitting next to his best friend nate. as he plopped his backpack down beside his friend, matt looked up at the white board and read in all big letters:
PARTNER PROJECT ON ENERGY OF MOTION - DUE IN TWO WEEKS
matt and nate grinned at each other, beginning making plans to pair up. the bell rang, and the teacher began to lecture. matt pulled out his notebook, already struggling to follow along with his teacher’s presentation. he had never been a straight a student, but he needed to keep his grades decent to stay on all his teams. however, physics was bringing his overall average down, and he needed to do well on this project to be able to start in his upcoming hockey games.
as the class made its way to an end and the students began to pack up, the teacher started to explain the project. “it’s quite simple really,” he began as he was erasing his notes from the board, “you and a partner will pick your own type of demonstration to show how kinetic energy is used in everyday objects.”
“this project will be worth a quarter of this semester’s overall grade, for both you and your partner, so it is crucial you all do well on this.” he explained, looking directly at matt. “before i let you all leave, i will be assigning your partners.” the entire class groaned.
he pulled out his class roster and began reading off names paired together.
“alexa and william… michelle and quincy… peter and xaiver… isabelle and ryan…”
please let me be with nate, matt thought. please let me be with nate. please let me be with nate.
“matthew and addilyn… louise and theresa… nathan and catie…”
no fucking way. of course addilyn was matt’s partner. he didn’t even know she was in his class. he looked around, annoyance written all over his face and he locked eyes with the curly headed girl sitting in the back of the room. she didn’t look too pleased either.
“this is an out of class project, so i suggest you start working on this asap.” the teacher announced just as the bell was ringing.
matt headed straight for the door when he felt a small tap on his shoulder. “what?” he snapped, looking down at the girl who tapped him.
“sorry,” addilyn said in a hushed voice, “its just- do you want to work on the project after school? we can go to my house, or i can come to yours or-”
“yeah, thats fine.” matt cut her off, walking out of the classroom, trying to shake her and walk with nate.
“which one?” she called out to him, her voice barely above a whisper.
“my house, but don’t expect anymore free rides from me. take the bus home.” matt told her angrily. she simply nodded and let him walk away from her, watching as he laughed with his friends in the hallway.
*₊˚ 𓂃✧
it was currently 3:30p.m., and matt was sitting at his kitchen table waiting for addilyn to come over. he had his laptop and textbook open, with messily written notes scattered all across the table. he found out later on in the school day that if he failed physics this semester, not only would be not be starting in his games, he would be benched for the rest of his hockey season. so to say he was stressed about this project was an understatement. he was broken out of his thoughts when he heard a tiny knock at the door, yelling for one of his brothers let addilyn in.
she wasn’t too excited about this project either, to be quite frank. but not for the same reasons as matt. addilyn simply hated working with others. she felt her quiet and introverted nature caused her to not work well when came to partner projects, so she typically opted to do these assignments alone. she even tried emailing her physics teacher after class, begging for him to let her work alone. he insisted that this was a two-person project for a reason, and told addilyn to stick it out. so here she was, at 3:30 on a monday, in matt sturniolo’s kitchen.
addilyn wasn’t sure why matt didn’t like her very much, but she wasn’t exactly is number one fan either. all the girls in the school loved matt. star hockey player, good looking, what wasn’t there to like about him? addilyn never looked at people surface level, though. she was a hardcore people watcher, mainly due to the fact she was almost always alone. she saw right through matt’s act and knew he was mean. she wasn’t sure how on earth he was related to nick and chris. they had only started talking a day ago, and she was greeted with smiles and waves every time she passed one of them that day. nick had even gone as far as switching his seat in art to sit next to addilyn. “i never liked sitting by the window, he had told her, “it’s always too drafty.”
addilyn quietly put her belongings down at the chair opposite from matts things, trying her best to be careful and not do anything to piss off matt even more. she was already on edge having to work one on one with him in his own house. matt didn’t even bother to look up at her. he mumbled a small “hi” as be started to type away on his laptop. addilyn pulled her belongings out, a stark contrast to matt’s. her notes were all written perfectly, with all the t’s crossed and i’s dotted, in a small cursive font that looked identical to if it were typed. matt took slight note of this.
“how do you write so neatly?” he genuinely asked, then realized he sounded nice, following up with “you probably so much free time on your hands because you have no friends” after addilyn told him quietly she re-writes her notes during lunch.
addilyn simply rolled her eyes. “i came here to work on the project, matt, not to take shit from you.”
“besides,” she started “we both get the same grade on this, and i am not letting you fuck up my gpa just because you want to be a dick to me.”
“it’s not like i can afford a bad grade on this either, sweetheart.” matt shot back at her.
sweetheart. why did her stomach suddenly feel weird?
stop it addy, she told herself, it’s matt, for crying out loud.
addilyn scoffed and began to look through her notes. “what were you thinking we do the project about?”
“i was hoping you could just do all the work.” matt had replied, blunt and matter-of-factly.
“what?” addilyn said in shock, dumfounded.
“what do you mean, what?, i don’t know shit about physics, you do. plus, i know you hate to work on these kinds of things with other people, so why don’t you do it alone?” matt told her.
she was in shock. had he really noticed i always work alone? she thought.
stop addy. he knows you work alone because you’re always doing things alone. it isn’t rocket science to connect the two.
before she could open her mouth to reply, chris came downstairs into the kitchen, grabbing a pepsi from the fridge. a smile grew on addilyn’s face as she said hi to him.
“no way, you and addy got paired together for this project?” chris gawked at matt, looking between him and addilyn.
“you’re so lucky, dude,” he continued, taking a swig of the soda, “justin told me he did this project when he was a senior, and everyone did so bad. thank god your partner is like, one of the top ten students in our class, or your senior season would have been shot.”
matt simply looked at chris. he was right, this shit was hard. he looked between the paper and addilyn a few times, before asking “where do we start?”
‎*₊˚ 𓂃✧
addilyn and matt ended up working until about 7:30 that night. his mom even insisted she stayed for dinner too.
“really sweetie, i don’t mind. i’m already feeding four kid’s, what’s one more?” she laughed.
“yeah addy, stay with us for dinner, please?” nick somewhat whined, dragging out the “e” sound.
addilyn gave in, and joined the sturniolo’s for dinner the second day in a row. like the previous night, dinner was filled with chatter from nick and chris, and radio silence coming from matt’s end. instead of giving her mean looks like he did at the previous dinner they shared, he just started at his plate the whole night and picked at his food.
“sorry about matt again,” chris apologized as he and nick began walking addilyn back next door to her house, “i don’t know whats been up with him lately.”
“it’s fine, really.” addilyn said. people being mean to her, or making rude remarks, was not out of the ordinary for her. she heard small whispers in passing everywhere she went. she was just used to it. “i’m glad you and nick are nice at least.”
chris just smiled at her and nick gave her a quick side hug. “we’re glad you’re nice, too, addy.”
the trio got to the front door, and addilyn gave them a small wave goodnight before she turned on her heel to walk into her home and upstairs. the boys walked back over to their house, noticing matt had already gone upstairs and disappeared to his room. he was sat at his desk, writing in his journal, when he noticed the light in the window across from his turned on. he saw addilyn set her book bag down, and sit at her mirror undoing her hair. he couldn’t help but to think how pretty she looked.
she’s weird, matt, he reminded himself, and you don’t even like her.
he sighed, closing his journal, and getting up to pull his blinds down to try to clear his head from the girl. out of sight out of mind. he saw her give a small smile, and he returned it by giving her a death stare, yanking the blinds down.
he got into bed, tossing and turning all night about this project with addilyn. he didn’t want to work on it with her, let alone even be nice to her, but he had to for chris and nick’s sake. they only started talking to her yesterday for god’s sake, and were already acting like they’ve been best friends since birth. matt knew these next two weeks of working on the project with addilyn everyday were going to be long.

LMFAO. anyways i'm so sorry to sam for being a victim of a hate crime and this storyline not being given the gravity it deserved, i'm so sorry to shandy for being brought in just to be an edwin 2.0 because it's apparently hilaaaarious when characters of colour become unreasonable and make poop jokes i guess, i'm so sorry to edwin who went from being an african man aware of the ridiculousness of his wealth and of the way he could help african players get recognition in their home countries to a man only interested in making white men richer (and a sidenote sorry to sam richardson who is a fantastic actor and deserved a lead actor nomination for his role in the afterparty), i'm so sorry to simi who was seemingly just brought in to make rebecca briefly jealous, i'm so sorry to sharon who was barely present, i'm so sorry to shannon who fully disappeared with one last little cameo where you couldn't even see her face, i'm so sorry to nate's family and lloyd in particular for not being centered in nate's growth because it was apparently better to bring in a manic pixie dream girl to literally force him to go back to richmond, and i'm so, SO sorry to nate who had so much potential and was played by a fantastic actor but did not get to have some of his biggest moments on screen and was forced to go back to richmond not even as a kitman, but as an assistant to the kitman, with none of his concerns ever being addressed, because he doesn't matter here: he's only present to further ted's good guy reputation. i'm so so sorry to every character of colour in this fucking show that got treated so horrendously and i'm so glad they're free now

the didn’t win the match. we didn’t see nate rejoin richmond two episodes after they got violent over the sight of him. we didn’t see rebecca help bex divorce rupert. sassy was there to say fuck you rupert and nothing else. zava sent an avacado which was apparently the entire point of his arc. no sam resolution with ola’s or his gf or sam richardson. jamie and roy last minute misogyny-off. rebecca crying pouring her heart out twice while ted emptily stares. rupert is a sex pest and a violent man (result is booing). we don’t see a conversation with henry or michelle about going back, they don’t pick him up from the airport. beard goes back to jane who has shredded his passport. ted has little to no reaction to trent’s book. shandy and jack? who? rebecca is ready to leave with ted. rebecca stumbles into unnamed brand new shadow Guy Character, who has a daughter played by the same actress who played young rebecca. beard and jane wedding. beard and jane wedding no ted. empty unsettling smile to camera while coaching his son who is apparently the only remaining connection ted has to uh the world. anyways. embarrassing!

As requested, I started my list of fave female/female-presenting Legends. I made it halfway and then I got stuck because it’s literally impossible so maybe I’ll do the second half later.
1. Zari Tomaz
Pros: She is literally everything. EVERYTHING.
Cons: I hate that in the end they basically just made her an extension of Nate. As much as I loved having her come back in seasons 6 and 7, it would have been better to let her go out on her own terms in the season 5 finale after kissing Charlie.
2. Charlie
Pros: Hands down my favorite character to write. The complexity, the layers of trauma, the love she has for all of the other Legends... what a beautiful character.
Cons: Shapeshifted into John Constantine to have an orgy. It is literally criminal to hide Maisie's face like that.
3. Astra Logue
Pros: Also amazing to write. She's the embodiment of one of my favorite tropes, the "I don't know how to human" one, but she's so snarky about it. Unafraid to tell everyone else exactly how dumb they're being, which they need constantly. Incredible amount of character growth in 2.5 seasons.
Cons: Should never have gotten into a relationship with Behrad. They're not compatible. They're not going to make it long term. But Astra is never going to be able to dump Behrad because he is the whole team's little brother and everybody loves him, so she will automatically be the bad guy and lose everything (at least in her slightly skewed assessment of things). One of the very few positives about the show being canceled is that we didn't have to see her get smaller and smaller in service of a male character.
4. Zari Tarazi
Pros: The fact that they got rid of my favorite character and replaced her with someone I love almost as much is insane. Completely insane. I love how much hidden depth she has. She's also one of the funniest characters on the show and, empirically speaking, very hot.
Cons: The absolute worst taste in men of any person ever. I absolutely loathed having to watch her get lied to for an entire season and for what?
5. Gideon
Pros: She's always been a great part of the show, but season 7 was just magnificent. I love her so much. Where would the show be without her? Nowhere, that's where.
Cons: I'm never going to completely forgive her for time looping Zari 1.0. She's been through some shit and you want to just traumatize her more for fun? Nope. Not okay.
6. Amaya Jiwe
Pros: I started watching the show with season 2, so she had to be my original fave. She was also my first time experiencing Maisie Richardson-Sellers and one does not just recover from that. She had hands-down the best powers on the show and was just radiant. And a bitch. And a fucking pirate. And Princess Leia. I rest my case.
Cons: Basically the cons for everyone on this list are annoying heterosexual relationships. Her story was so much bigger than Nate and they should have let that happen.

Have to admit that I enjoyed the Chicken Run sequel, it was better than I expected. I’m not going to make a full on post as I have to be up in a few hours, but a few things:
Obviously I’m still mad about Aardman/Netflix replacing Julia Sawalha, and given that I grew up with the original film the change is just so jarring - especially since they used archive footage/recordings of her voice in the first film for flashbacks, which makes it even weirder for me personally.
I’m not going to complain about Mel Gibson being replaced as Rocky given the circumstances tbh
I LOVE the Paloma Faith song used, it’s a great song, but when I first heard it in the opening scenes of the film I was like “…???”, like it just sounded so… modern and pop-y compared to the first film? It’s a fantastic song, don’t get me wrong, but compared to the first film, where you had a rather old fashioned sounding song played during the film (Flip Flop Fly), it made this film seem more American than British, if that makes sense (which kind of irks me because one of the most charming parts of the original for me is how British it is)
Following on from my point above, whole film in general seemed like it was more modern and more set in present day, which in some ways is to be expected because there’s a 23 year gap between movies, but on the other, the original film felt almost timeless, like it could have been set in any decade. As far as I remember, the original didn’t have any televisions, it had a sort of old fashioned radio and while, yes, there was electricity (the pie machine, Christmas lights etc), it felt like it could have been set in an older year than 2000. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know, but this film really went twenty times more modern and gadget-y
You know how in the first film, Mrs Tweedy picks out a chicken who hasn’t been laying any eggs, then we see the shadow of her beheading the chicken followed by what is clearly a roast chicken skeleton on the Tweedys’ dinner table? I thought it couldn’t get more fucked from that, but Aardman wanted to prove me wrong because what the fUCK
Have to say that the first film strangely never actually made me want to stop eating chicken, meanwhile this film made me feel sick at the thought of a chicken nugget 😭 it might take a while before I can eat chicken again 😔
Hopefully the chickens I eat are NOT mind controlled on a high tech farm to walk to their deaths
Miranda Richardson back as Melisha Tweedy, SLAAAAAAY 💅🏻
I can’t decide what’s funnier, her introducing herself as “Melisha Tweedy” despite getting remarried or her calling Dr Fry “my current husband”
ALSO DOCTOR FRY IS VOICED BY NATE THE GREAT FROM TED LASSO?!? 😭
I don’t believe Mrs Tweedy is dead to be honest, if being inside the pie machine when it exploded (after falling into it from a great height), flattened by a barn wall/door, and going headfirst into the chicken nugget machine and smothered in breadcrumbs couldn’t kill her than I doubt that the killer robot ducks that shoot lasers will do the job, especially given that they didn’t kill Rocky, a rooster 💀
Calling it now there’ll be a third film and she’ll be back, I’m calling it right now!!!
I SAW FEATHER MCGRAW FROM THE WRONG TROUSERS AT THE END LMAO FEATHERS YOU LIL SKANK THIS AINT YOUR MOVIE 🐧
Anyway, I thought it was better than expected - the first one will always be the best of course, but as far as sequels go, this one was definitely on the better end of the scale!

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 3, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
APR 04, 2024
The election of 2000 was back in the news this week, when Nate Cohn of the New York Times reminded readers of his newsletter, using a map by data strategist and consultant Matthew C. Isbell, that the unusual butterfly ballot design in Palm Beach County that year siphoned off at least 2,000 votes intended for Democratic candidate Al Gore to far-right candidate Pat Buchanan.
Those 2,000 votes were enough to decide the election, “all things being equal,” Cohn wrote. But of course, they weren’t equal: in 1998 a purge of the Florida voter rolls had disproportionately disenfranchised Black voters, making them ten times more likely than white voters to have their ballots rejected.
That ballot and that purge gave Republican candidate George W. Bush the electoral votes from Florida, putting him into the White House although he had lost the popular vote by more than half a million votes.
Revisiting the 2000 election reminds us that manipulating the vote through voter suppression or the mechanics of an election in even small ways can undermine the will of the people.
A poll out today from the Associated Press/NORC showed that the vast majority of Americans agree about the importance of the fundamental principles of our democracy. Ninety-eight percent of Americans think the right to vote is extremely important, very important, or somewhat important. Only 2% think it is “not too important.” The split was similar with regard to “the right of everyone to equal protection under the law”: 98% of those polled thought it was extremely, very, or somewhat important, while only 2% thought it was not too important.
Recent election results suggest that voters don’t support the extremism of the current Republican Party. In local elections in the St. Louis, Missouri, area on Tuesday, voters rejected all 13 right-wing candidates for school boards, and in Enid, Oklahoma, voters recalled a city council member who participated in the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and had ties to white supremacist groups.
Seemingly aware of the growing backlash to their policies, MAGA Republicans are backing away from them, at least in public. Earlier this year, Florida governor Ron DeSantis called for making it harder to ban books after a few activists systematically challenged dozens of books in districts where they had no children in the schools—although he blamed teachers, administrators, and “the news media” for creating a “hoax.”
Today, lawyers for the state of Texas told a federal appeals court that state legislators might have gone “too far” with their immigration law that made it a state crime to enter Texas illegally and allowed state judges to order immigrants to be deported. (Mexico had flatly refused to accept deported immigrants from other countries under this new law.) Nonetheless, Arizona legislators have passed a similar bill—that Democratic governor Katie Hobbs refuses to sign into law—and are considering another measure that would allow landowners to threaten or shoot people who cross their property to get into the U.S.
Indeed, the extremists who have taken over the Republican Party seem less inclined to moderate their stances than either to pollute popular opinion or to prevent their opponents from voting.
While Trump is hedging about his stance on abortion—after bragging repeatedly that he was the person responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade—MAGA Republicans have made their unpopular abortion stance even stronger.
Emily Cochrane of the New York Times reported today that the hospital at the center of the decision by the Alabama state supreme court that embryos used for in vitro fertilization have the same rights and protections as children has ended its IVF services. And on Monday, Florida’s supreme court, which Florida governor Ron DeSantis packed with extremists, upheld a ban on abortion after 15 weeks and allowed a new six-week abortion ban—before most women know they’re pregnant—to go into effect in 30 days.
In the past, people seeking abortions had gravitated to Florida because its constitution upheld the right to privacy, which protected abortion. But now the Florida Supreme Court has decided the constitution does not protect the right to abortion. Caroline Kitchener explained in the Washington Post that in the past, more than 80,000 women a year accessed abortion services in Florida. This ban will make it nearly impossible to get an abortion in the American South.
Anya Cook, who in 2022 nearly died after she was denied an abortion under Florida’s 15-week ban, gave Kitchener a message for Florida women experiencing pregnancy complications: “Run,” she said. “Run, because you have no help here.”
Extremist Republicans have managed to put their policies into place not by winning a majority and passing laws through Congress, but by creating cases that they then take to sympathetic judges. This system, known as “judge shopping,” has so perverted lawmaking that on March 12 the Judicial Conference, the body that makes policy for federal courts, announced a new rule that any lawsuit seeking to overturn statewide or national policies would be randomly assigned among a larger pool of judges.
On March 29, the chief judge of the Northern District of Texas, where many such cases are filed, told Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that he would not adhere to the new rules.
Rather than moderating their stances, extremist Republicans are doubling down on their attempt to create dirt on the president. With their impeachment effort against President Joe Biden in embarrassing ruins, House Republicans are casting around for another issue to hurt the Democrats before the 2024 election.
Jennifer Haberkorn of Politico reported today that in the last month, House Republican Committee chairs have sent almost 50 oversight requests to a variety of departments and agencies. Haberkorn noted that there is “significant political pressure on the party to produce results after months of promising it would uncover evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors involving Biden.”
But it is Trump, not Biden, who is in the news for questionable behavior. In The Guardian today, Hugo Lowell reported that Trump’s social media company was kept afloat in 2022 “by emergency loans provided in part by a Russian-American businessman under scrutiny in a federal insider-trading and money-laundering investigation.”
There is more trouble for the social media company in the news today, as two of its investors pleaded guilty to being part of an insider-trading scheme involving the company’s stock. They admitted they had secret, inside information about the merger between Trump Media and Digital World Acquisition Corporation and had used that insider information to make profitable trades.
Meanwhile, Trump is suing Truth Social’s founders to force them out of leadership and make them give up their shares in the company. His is a countersuit to their lawsuit accusing him of trying to dilute the company’s stock.
Of more immediate concern for Trump, Judge Juan Merchan denied yet another attempt by Trump—his eighth, according to prosecutors—to delay his election interference trial. The trial is scheduled to begin April 15.
Finally, in an illustration of extremists aiming not to moderate their stances but to impose the will of the minority on the majority, Republicans are putting in place rules to make it easier for individuals to challenge voters, removing them from the voter rolls before the 2024 election.
Marc Elias of Democracy Docket noted today that states and local governments have regular programs to keep voter registration accurate, while right-wing activists are operating on a different agenda. In one 70,000-person town in Michigan, a single activist challenged more than a thousand voters, Elias reported, and in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, right-wing activists have already challenged 16,000 voters and intend to challenge another 10,000.
One group boasted that their system “can and will change elections in America forever.”
Rather like the election of 2000.

The 7D Staff: Where Are They Now?
Time for another update on The 7D staff!
Former staff writers Sherri Stoner, Deanna Oliver, Randy Rogel and Cooper Sweeney are now working on the recently debuted PBS Kids series Work It Out Wombats! It’s surprising to see people who also wrote for the original Animaniacs series working with many other former writers of Arthur on the same series!
The series sounds fun, and I want to check it out as soon as I can!
Tumblr media
If you’re a fan of the Frog and Toad book series, you’ll be delightful to know that an animated series based on it has debuted on Apple TV+ in April! Kevin Michael Richardson -- Happy himself -- voices Frog along with Nat Faxon -- check him out in one of my favorite animated series, It’s Pony, as Mr. Underwood -- as Toad! It’s a delightful and gentle series -- totally recommend!
Tumblr media
Also, Richardson is also the voice of school principal Nichols on Big Nate -- whose second season makes its debut today on Paramount+ (also recommended)!

Possibly my favourite episode of the season. But could that be because it feels like they just remembered this show is really about Rebecca Welton and is just named after her boyfriend?? Not at all!!
Let’s go!!
Episode 10 - International Break
Tumblr media
Woah! What a way for reveal Nate left West Ham! 🫢
Shut up, George!! You’re just bitter you were shut at your job and it’s showing now
Ted! We want to spend every weekend with you! Please never leave
Is this really how they find out who got chosen?? Seems like something they’d personally get told first. I think the boys knew, but the coaches didn’t!! Hmm
‘Wait, hold on. Bumbercatch, you’re Swiss?’ ‘Yeah. Look at me’ this boy really is a man of mystery!! 😂
Poor Sam 🙁
But God love Jamie though! He’s come so far!! 🥰🥰
‘I am not your bro. We are now enemies, and soon, you will be my bitch’ woah, Mexico Dani is a whole other breed of dog, huh!! I’ll stick with Richmond puppy Dani, thanks 😂
YYEEEAAAHHHH!!
We love a convo that sounds like it’s about periods but is actually about wine 🫡
MADELINE KAHN REFERENCE!!! 😍😍 this alone could make this episode my favourite!!
Totally tracks though that Ted doesn’t like gossip
As much as I always want scenes of Ted & Rebecca alone, that reveal to Trent was brilliant. And of course he’s good at girl talk 😂
Please, they way Rebecca reacts to Ted is such married behaviour. AND TRENT IS SEEING IT ALL FIRST HAND!! I’m so excited
Oh, Ted. You’re cute. You knew exactly what they meant. You just wanted to make your wife smile. It’s okay, we get it 🥰
AND AGAIN WITH THE DEVIL BIT. Boy…
I’ll continue to say it; Nate & Jade are cute!
Fully expected her to flip them all off, not gonna lie
Omg I totally saw this coming, and yet it’s still heartbreaking 🥺
Keeley’s not stupid. She knows it’s not the board, Barbra
JUNO TEMPLE!!! 😢😢😢 (first time I got teary this episode)
Scary Mexico Dani 🤘🏼 You just know Cristo had a blast with this episode!! (Peep the guy in the back with the huge smile😂)
Slutty Ted in red with his arms out 🥵
‘It’s hard to see the ball when your eyes are full if tears’ fucking savage 😂
The Wunder Turd. Nice
Fuck Jane though
I think Trent’s next book should just be about Beard. That is an interesting man, for sure! Like, why do you need so many axes, my guy?!
Well that was awkward… but also a little sweet 🫣
‘The creepy old man that lives in the sewers’ Renee, you’ll always be famous to us
Okay, I could go on and on about this, but I think this is a great, subtle way to begin showing Rupert falling apart.
‘When they used to play by candlelight’ YES, REBECCA! FUCK THAT OLD MAN UP!! 😂
‘Some people just are t ready when they get their shot’ That is not at all what happened, Rupert
Oop she knows that’s bullshit, too
HAPPY UNCLE DAY, ROY!! 🎉🎉
Okay, I love Roy’s sister. And also the subtle call back to her actually being the doctor that treated Sharon last season 👍🏼 Nice
Of course that’s the order of Phoebe’s favourite holidays. Uncle Roy is number 1! (&2😉)
Uh oh, secrets out boys! 😂😂
How fucking cute though that Jamie gets a call (probably from Phoebe herself) inviting him to this party and he actually turns up with a really thoughtful gift 🥹 THE GROWTH IN THIS BOY IS GORGEOUS!!
Omg Eloide’s face journey in this scene is perfection. Phoebe has been grossly underused this show!
Also the cutest fucking present. She’s knows your inside is so bright and colourful, Roy! You shouldn’t hide it!
‘Your sister is fit’ ‘I will cut your eyes out’ 😂 okay, but like… I would 100% be behind these two being brother-in-laws, just saying 😂
SAM RICHARDSON!!! 😍 always a blast when he shows up!
And you just know from Toheeb himself that these scenes are a struggle to get through once Sam gets on a roll
But poor Sam, though. Edwin is such a dick
Poor Nate, too. He’s so lost right now 🥺
Yeah, Lloyd, shut up (which is what she meant to say)
Seeing her signs blocked off 🥺🥺 heartbreaking
Since when does her lady ship enter a room like that?? 😂 but I’m glad it means we get to see more physical comedy from Jeremy 👍🏼 Always a bonus!
So her order is Keeley, Ted, Sassy, Leslie and never her mother 😂 I love that actually
‘I hate to break it to you, Rebecca, but those children are dead’ made me laugh just as much as it did the first time! 😂
We love a protective Papa Higgins in this house 🥰 but boy seems traumatised by that story 😂
Oh don’t suck your tie, Leslie 🤦🏻‍♀️
So that photo has shown up on both Keeley & Ted’s phone, but whose did she take it on?? 🤔
That is a bullshit text, Jack. Absolutely no excuse. I knew I was right to not trust you from the start! 😡
‘Everything? Fuck no’ another great call back
Also hell yeah to a Keeley & Mae scene!! (Do have some thoughts about what I’ve seen some people say about this scene, though…)
Whether she’s drunk or making a joke, Keeley actually going with Mae’s full name being Maybe is genius!😂
I really need a Mae in my life. I feel like I could actually get my life in order after a conversation with this woman
Everyone not knowing what to do or how to react to him wearing this t-shirt is brilliant
(Also Red Right Hand playing over this is maybe the last little push I need to finally start Peaky Blinders once this show is done)
Beard trying to get Ted’s attention- amazing. But what was he doing on his phone that he was so focused on??
‘Okay, now I’m worried. Are you alive? Text ‘no’ if dead’ living for silly, real Rebecca! 🥰
The boys all getting together to watch all the games is beautiful 🥹 they’re all so supportive!!
Also genius work casting Colin & Ryan as the commentators for this match 👌🏼
Savage Dani!!
What are you decorating, Rebecca, that you have a ‘decorating made easy’ pdf on your laptop?? 🤔
📢 THE ARMY MAN IS BACK!! 📢
Yo, Rupert is really struggling atm, huh!
Yes I gasped when he threw it on the floor, but had no doubt he’d bake back for it!
Rebecca is a gif sender. Of course she is
Rebecca has anxiety confirmed?? 🤔
Okay this scene with little Rebecca is absolutely gorgeous!! And did make me tear up a little, not gonna lie.
(As I’ve also said, I choose to believe Paul taught her to do that when she was little)
That is going to become his new favourite t-shirt, I can see it already. Something will eventually happen to it and he’s going to be devastated!!
Again, who the fuck is Leann?! Your name is Ruth, woman! 😂 it’s times like this that fanfic really screws with you 😂
‘I teach kids. I don’t mind cleaning up a mess’ tell him like it is, RuthLeann 😂
Aannndd it’s all falling into place finally. Took your time, Roy!!
‘I like clothes that tell the truth’ BARBARA!! You juicy minx 😂 I love you, please never leave!!
I’ve absolutely loved watching these two together 🥹
She’s so awkward, maybe a little bit autistic 🤷🏻‍♀️ makes sense!
Rupert’s being nice. Makes me feel weird…
‘How could I resist the chance of having a bunch of old men speak directly to my chest?’ Don’t try so hard, man. She’s not that funny!!
His assistant is called Bread. A play on Beard perhaps?? 🤔
Okay, what has he said about Rebecca to get a reaction from her like that??
Also this is deliciously awkward. I hope it comes out that Nathan told everyone he was sleeping with his assistant, as well as others, and that’s why he left. And that Bex left him too. You must suffer
Your ex-wife is also not stupid. She knows exactly what happened with your old assistant.
He introduced her as an owner, not his ex. HE’S TRYING SO HARD!!
I’ve had this exact exchange with many an older gentleman in my time. This is too real 🤢
This man and his obsession with Chicago-style hot dogs knows no bounds! 😂
Okay, these baby pictures are cute
Sam pulling the most out of a tiny little thing is wonderful 😂 wonder how long that actually went on for??
‘An untried dream’. Eww.
So Keeley does know how to text back! 🫢
I love how they bring things in from the actors themselves, assuming this really is Nick playing
‘Is this a fucking joke?’ FUCK THEM UP, GIRLIE!!
And Sam’s face 😂
They really just said let’s surround Hannah with kids this episode, huh 😂
Love her talking to a bunch of old men like they’re children, too
Jamie wearing 24 for Sam 🥹🥹🥹 yes, I have to pause until the tears go away
Roy, your handwriting is atrocious
How dare this show make me have a feeling towards Rupert 😡
I agree with you, Edwin, what a lovely speech indeed. Rebecca, you have come so far from the bitter ex-wife who just wanted to destroy something your ex-husband loved. You truly care and love the sport and your boys now and it’s delicious to witness 🥰🥰🥰
Omg that reveal with amazing!! (Although I will say, on my first watch I though initially the food on Tony’s head was because he’d been punched 🫣😂)
Those giggles were purely Hannah & Tony
Nick is absolutely killing in this season. This scene is a great showcase of exactly how these types of families are. It’s beautiful to witness
Also shoutout to the actor playing his dad. He’s done an amazing job too!!
I’m feeling so many emotions watching this scene. Tony is showcasing beautifully exactly how charming Rupert can be. Reminiscing about old times, getting food out of her hair. Doing his ‘Rupert act’ that likely always works for him. But not with her. Not anymore. She’s the strong one now and he’s lost 🥹 Good for you, Rebecca!
She has to look now, Roy, because nobody can read your handwriting 😂
Brett & Juno kill me. His letter is just beautiful and made me tear up every time I’ve listened to it 🥹 AND HE TOLD HER HE STILL LOVES HER!! 🥰
‘Sincerely yours, Roy Kent. XOXO’ 😂😂 never change, please
They really are beautiful and I can’t wait to see them coming back together!
Keeley opening that door and screaming at Rebecca was *chefs kiss* 😂 Juno Temple, comedy queen!
And I want what they have!! I love how she can share her good news, ask for a hug, then tell her she’s cross with her friend. And her friend completely understands. It’s wonderful
Again, being accountable for you actions. Rebecca doesn’t even have to say anything to her
I’ve seen people against Rebecca funding KJPR, but I think it makes perfect sense. Rebecca has the money and she wants to do something within her means to help her friend reach her full potential. Why wouldn’t she help?!
Keely’s disgust is all of us 😂
Baby girl is finally at the top of her mountain! Now just needs her lightening 😉
I love that the salute has become Rebecca & Roy’s thing 🥰
Wilk is shocked! Bit what a beautiful gesture!
Barbara left Jack and wants to stay with Keeley, as she should! I’ve said from the beginning she knew what Jack was like, but I think the difference is she actually likes Keeley…
I THINK THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF A BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP 🩷🎉🥰
Puppy Dani is back!!
Roy wears a colour other than black (or charcoal heather grey) and Beard learns he can share bits of himself with people. Yes, we’re coming to an end, guys…
She didn’t get rid of the painting!!
Also doesn’t need saying, but how fucking gorgeous is Hannah in this scene! That dress & colour on her are delightful. She’s so fucking soft now!!
She didn’t open the biscuits right away! 👀 and she shuffled closer to Ted 👀 is this it, girls? Is it happening?? I’m not ready! What do I do?!! 🫠
The little smile after she says so no longer cares about beating Rupert 🫣 He’s so proud of her!!
The heart eyes 😍 Ted, she is still your boss! She’s not your wife yet!!
OMFG!! 😂😂 how many times do you think she had to do that before she could do it without laughing?? 😂
‘As long as none of that tree piss gets in my mouth, I’m actually okay with it’ Okay, Ted. We get it!!
Well that episode was absolutely beautiful! On so many fronts!!
I do have more thoughts about a few points which I may elaborate on at some point, but I do feel like it’s showing we’re on the home stretch now 😢
Looks like we’re getting Mumma Lasso next episode, too!! 🫣 Kinda vibrating with excitement, but at the same time telling myself not to expect too much! But she’s in Richmond so it’s only right to assume there’d be a scene between her & Rebecca, right??
Only 2 more left babes!! 🫡
