Ivo Perelman and Nate Wooley  —   Polarity 3 (Burning Ambulance)
Tumblr media
Polarity 3 is hard to parse. Saxophonist Ivo Perelman and trumpeter Nate Wooley have recorded two previous albums as a duo, both pushing at the boundaries of free jazz and improvisation.
Their latest collaboration, Polarity 3, runs just over an hour and offers ten different performances. There’s no songbook, no standards, not even a set of chord changes tying them together. These performances vary in length from just a couple minutes to a ten-minute improvisation that closes the record.
The record showcases the chemistry they’ve developed as a duo over their past records. They bounce phrases and ideas off each other, constantly pushing each other in new directions. Sometimes they come together to play in sync before spinning off in their own directions. It’s like a dance, though one without a lot of rules.
“One” opens with both artists playing long notes but soon they switch to short, wavelike patterns and circling around each other, eventually moving up and down the scale. Over eight minutes, they feel each other out: they take turns, then slowly start to play at the same time and eventually find some common ground in the last third of the track.
For the first part of the record, they move slowly, as if trying to set a tone for the evening: “Two” is a mood piece with its long, drifting notes. In “Three,” they experiment with the ranges of their instruments, quickly building up the pace and energy. The track ends with both blowing harsh bursts of sound, like a tape reel running into a burst of static.
Polarity 3 starts to come together on “Four” as they work in tandem, sometimes playing a base for the other, sometimes moving around the same ideas. When Wooley plays a rising phrase of notes, Perelman follows with one of his own, or vice versa. By the end of the performance, Wooley is playing low, buzzing notes and Perelman’s getting a nice, full-throated tone out of his tenor sax.
“Six” is another standout. They start with quick, darting movements around some high notes and eventually their playing gives the impression of two musical lines that are twisting and bending around each other, like ivy growing along a trellis. Soon the notes take on a harsher edge, with Wooley’s starting to buzz and Perelman's getting a rough, airy tone. But eventually they work back to common ground and play some bright notes in harmony.
Polarity 3 is full of moments like that and it’s tempting to say it’s like one is setting puzzles for the other to find their way out of. But that doesn’t seem quite right — this is not a partnership that feels combative or at odds. It’s more like two people working together on putting together a puzzle or shaping a piece of art. It feels collaborative in the sense that each is building on what the other’s doing, of them trying to find a shape for ideas running through their mind.
Sometimes shapelessness gives way to a feeling of sparseness and open space. The horns echo and the brief moments of silence fill the room. At others, the similarity of their two voices left me wishing they mixed it up somewhat, for instance, with Perelman switching to a different kind of horn. But then there are moments where Wooley changes the timbre of his trumpet or where Perelman works right at the lower registers of his sax, giving things a boost of color. On “Eight” he uses a mute and gives his trumpet a decidedly Miles-like tone, even if he’s playing in a radically different style than Miles ever did.
Free jazz records like this have the potential to come off as self-indulgent, with the feeling of the musicians noodling endlessly. Thankfully that’s not the case here: these two engage with each other enough that the music never feels like it’s settling down. It might be a little hard to grasp for someone new to either one, but the kind of listener who’s familiar with any of Perelman’s previous free records (Tuning Forks, The Whisperers) will like what they find here.

Sylvie Courvoisier — Chimaera (Intakt)
Tumblr media
Duration can be a double-edged sword. When it’s handled wrong, longer-form music can just feel long. And in an age when a preponderance of music is served up in three or four minute-long bites, a tune doesn’t need to be too long to feel like a bit of a chew. But duration can justify itself by allowing a listener to untether the listening experience from recognizing structural elements and marking their repetitions. That’s certainly the case with the music on Chimaera, the debut album by a combo led by Sylvie Courvoisier that bears the same name.
Chimaera is an outgrowth of Courvoisier’s trio with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Kenny Wolleson. To their number she added Nate Wooley, who brings a deep bag of extended trumpet techniques and an even deeper interrogative spirit, and Christian Fennesz, whose application of electronics can transform the sound of his guitar beyond recognition. And for this session, she added another trumpeter, Wadada Leo Smith.
One might expect a band named after a fire-breathing, two-headed beast to singe some ear hairs, but that’s not really the case. It’s more likely that the Swiss-born pianist and composer, who has been based in Brooklyn since the late 1990s, chose it for its mythological dimension. The album’s compositions were inspired by the paintings of Odilon Redon, a direct predecessor of surrealism. Their length permits the listener to be simply be present as the music manifests in diaphanous layers of color and forms that are perceptible, but not always recognizable. Gress begins “Le Pavot Rouge,” the album’s opening track, with a questioning, bluesy figure introduction. In short order, he parts a veil of shimmering piano and vibraphone (Wollesen plays vibraphone as drum kit much of the time, which substantially shifts the weight and character of sound away from piano trio conventions), and then takes up a spare, abstracted tango rhythm. Over the next 20 minutes, musicians enter and exit the action. One trumpet takes up the querying vibe, and the other resolves it. The guitar floats dubby echoes over the pulse. Courvoisier darts out of the vibes at double speed, or complicates some brass harmonies with spare dissonant notes.
In other settings, such as her duo with Mary Halvorson, Courvoisier favors abruptness and density. Chimaera’s music is no less eventful. But it drifts instead of bursting, inviting the listener to surrender to a sequence of dissolutions, reconstitutions, and surprising elaborations across six compositions and 87 minutes of dream-like music.

Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the garden… is the latest instalment in composer, improviser, saxophonist, bandleader and visual artist Matana Roberts’ visionary project exploring African-American history through ancestry, archive and place. Weaving together elements of jazz, avant-garde composition, folk and spoken word, Roberts tells the story of a woman in their ancestral line, who died following complications from an illegal abortion. At a time when reproductive rights are under attack, her story takes on new resonance. “I wanted to talk about this issue, but in a way where she gets some sense of liberation,” Roberts explains. By unpacking family stories and conducting extensive research in US public archives, Roberts has created a rounded portrait of a woman who is, as their lyrics put it, “electric, alive, spirited, fire and free.” Each part of Coin Coin explores radically different musical settings, from the free jazz and post-rock eruptions of Chapter One to the solo noise collage of Chapter Three. Featuring a new ensemble steeped in jazz, improvisation, new music and avant-rock, helping to expand the project’s existing sonic palette, Chapter Five is no exception. Roberts is joined by fellow alto saxophonist Darius Jones, violinist Mazz Swift (Silkroad Ensemble, D’Angelo), bass clarinettist Stuart Bogie (TV On The Radio, Antibalas), alto clarinettist Matt Lavelle (Eye Contact, Sumari), pianist Cory Smythe (Ingrid Laubrock, Anthony Braxton), vocalist/actor Gitanjali Jain and percussionists Ryan Sawyer (Thurston Moore, Nate Wooley) and Mike Pride (Pulverize The Sound, MDC). The late, great trumpeter jaimie branch, who was due to play on the album, receives a credit for “courage”. The album is produced by TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, who also contributes synths. As a composer, Roberts draws upon strategies associated with the post-war avant-garde, including John Cage and Fluxus member Benjamin Patterson’s conceptual approaches to scoring and performance. The immersive work of Maryanne Amacher, in which “sound and the body almost collaborate” is another key influence. “That is the foundation for me of the Coin Coin work,” they explain. “It’s not just the alto saxophone as an instrument placed in the jazz canon, it's the alto saxophone as an instrument that can be utilised to affect the body.” Listeners will be struck by Roberts’ ability to mould diverse sounds into a cohesive whole. The spoken word passages are accompanied by driving modal jazz on “how prophetic”, minimalist synth loops on “enthralled not by her curious blend” and cantering folk forms on “(a)way is not an option”. These are interspersed with instrumental pieces that range from avant-garde abstraction and squalling free jazz, to solo saxophone reflections and Mississippi fife and drums blues. There’s a further evocation of American roots music in the powerful group vocal arrangement of “but I never heard a sound so long”, adapted by Roberts from the plantation lullaby “All The Pretty Horses.” While this new chapter of Coin Coin focusses on a female-identified protagonist, others haven’t (Chapter Three being from the perspective of a male ancestor) and Roberts intends for future chapters to continue to cover the breadth of the gender spectrum, as well as their Native American heritage. “I'm proud that people say that the Coin Coin work speaks of a woman's story. But I want to make sure that it retains its inclusivity, because what we look like is not always what you see.” This reflects Roberts’ own experiences as a queer person of colour. For the remaining chapters of Coin Coin, Roberts will continue exploring identity and ancestry. “Expect it to keep heading towards a liberation of the human spirit.”

Ches Smith - Minimalism, from Laugh Ash, out February 2, 2024 via Pyroclastic Records - really excited for this, 3 horns AND a string quartet in the group
Drummer, percussionist and composer Ches Smith collides a lifetime of eclectic influences on his startling, unpredictable new album Laugh Ash, out February 2, 2024 via Pyroclastic Records. James Brandon Lewis, Nate Wooley, Anna Webber, Shahzad Ismaily, Oscar Noriega, Shara Lunon, Jennifer Choi, Kyle Armbrust and Michael Nicolas join Smith on this breathtakingly original set of music. The album makes thrilling use of disorientation and juxtaposition: starkly beautiful chamber melodies coexist with synthetic rhythms, explosive bursts of improvisation with elusive song forms, austere ambience with thundering complexity. Video for the track Minimalism: Directed and Edited by Frank Heath Produced by David Breskin
