Summaries under the cut
Goddess Girls by Joan Holub
Athena has always been above average. She has never quite fit in at Triton Junior High, but who would've guessed that Athena is actually a goddess? Principal Zeus's daughter, to be exact.
When she's summoned to Mount Olympus Academy, Athena thinks she might actually fit in for the first time in her life. But in some ways, school on Mount Olympus is not that different from down on Earth, and Athena is going to have to deal with the baddest mean girl in history: Medusa!
Ruby Redfort by Lauren Child
Here's the low-down on Ruby she's a genius code-cracker, a daring detective, and a gadget-laden special agent who just happens to be a thirteen-year-old girl. She and her slick side-kick butler, Hitch, foil crimes and get into loads of scrapes with evil villains, but they're always ice-cool in a crisis. In LOOK INTO MY EYES, we go right back to Ruby's beginnings as an agent. When an anonymous caller sets Ruby a challenge, it's not long before she finds her way into the HQ of the most secret of secret agencies -- SPECTRUM. They need her help to crack a code but her desk job soon spirals into an all-out action adventure, as Ruby uncovers the dastardly plans of the formidable Fool's Gold Gang!
The Arkwell Academy by Mindee Arnett
Sixteen-year-old Dusty Everhart breaks into houses late at night, but not because she’s a criminal. No, she’s a Nightmare.
Literally.
Being the only Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for magickind, and living in the shadow of her mother’s infamy, is hard enough. But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder.
Then Eli’s dream comes true.
Now Dusty has to follow the clues—both within Eli’s dreams and out of them—to stop the killer before more people turn up dead. And before the killer learns what she’s up to and marks her as the next target.
Hitty, Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field
Hitty is a doll of great charm and character. It is indeed a privilege to publish her memoirs, which, besides being full of the most thrilling adventures on land and sea, also reveal her delightful personality. One glance at her portrait will show that she is no ordinary doll. Hitty, or Mehitable as she was really named, was made in the early 1800s for Phoebe Preble, a little girl from Maine. Young Phoebe was very proud of her beautiful doll and took her everywhere, even on a long sailing trip in a whaler. This is the story of Hitty's years with Phoebe, and the many that follow in the life of a well-loved doll.
George's Secret Key to the Universe by Lucy and Steven Hawking
George's parents, who have always been wary of technology, warn him about their new neighbors: Eric is a scientist and his daughter, Annie, seems to be following in his footsteps. But when George befriends them and Cosmos, their super-computer, he finds himself on a wildly fun adventure, while learning about physics, time, and the universe. With Cosmos's help, he can travel to other planets and a black hole. But what would happen if the wrong people got their hands on Cosmos?
May Bird by Jodi Lynn Anderson
Most people aren't very comfortable in the woods, but the woods of Briery Swamp fit May Bird like a fuzzy mitten. There, she is safe from school and the taunts and teases of kids who don't understand her. Hidden in the trees, May is a warrior princess, and her cat, Somber Kitty, is her brave guardian.
Then May falls into the lake.
When she crawls out, May finds herself in a world that most certainly does not feel like a fuzzy mitten. In fact it is a place few living people have ever seen. Here, towns glow blue beneath zipping stars and the people -- people? -- walk through walls. Here the Book of the Dead holds the answers to everything in the universe. And here, if May is discovered, the horrifyingly evil Bo Cleevil will turn her into nothing.
May Bird must get out.
Fast.
Half Upon a Time by James Riley
Life’s no fairy tale for Jack. After all, his father's been missing ever since that incident with the beanstalk and the giant, and his grandfather keeps pushing him to get out and find a princess to rescue. Who'd want to rescue a snobby, entitled princess anyway? Especially one that falls out of the sky wearing a shirt that says "Punk Princess," and still denies she's royalty. In fact, May doesn't even believe in magic. Yeah, what's that about? May does need help though--a huntsman is chasing her, her grandmother has been kidnapped, and Jack thinks it’s all because of the Wicked Queen . . . mostly because May’s grandmother might just be the long-lost Snow White.
The Moorchild by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
Half moorfolk and half human, and unable to shape-shift or disappear at will, Moql threatens the safety of the Band. So the Folk banish her and send her to live among humans as a changeling. Named Saaski by the couple for whose real baby she was swapped, she grows up taunted and feared by the villagers for being different, and is comfortable only on the moor, playing strange music on her bagpipes.
As Saaski grows up, memories from her forgotten past with the Folks slowly emerge. But so do emotions from her human side, and she begins to realize the terrible wrong the Folk have done to the humans she calls Da and Mumma. She is determined to restore their child to them, even if it means a dangerous return to the world that has already rejected her once.
The Genius Files by Dan Gutman
Coke McDonald and his twin sister, Pepsi, think their family’s cross-country RV vacation is nothing to get excited about...until they’re chased off a cliff, locked in a burning school, and receive mysterious messages in codes and ciphers. From California to Wisconsin, it’s a race against time to find out who’s after Coke and Pep, who’s leaving the notes...and just what being a part of The Genius Files entails!
Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander
Gareth's definitely no ordinary cat. For one thing, he can talk. For another, he's got the power to travel through time. And the instant he tells this to Jason, the two of them are in ancient Egypt, on the first of nine amazing adventures that Jason will never forget.

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: 27 Threats to Everyday Life by Anne Holub
ADVANCE ORDER: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/27-threats-to-everyday-life-by-anne-holub/
As a child, did you used to leave the house with a caution and a warning from your parents? Drive safe! Be careful! What did you worry about when you walked alone in the dark? The chapbook, “27 Threats to Everyday Life,” explores everyday encounters with danger, fear, and survival through specific poems. This collection isn’t a study in morbidity, but instead examines living in a world where even small dangers can lead to catastrophe. Does the threat of danger keep you at home instead of taking risks? Or does even a life behind your door pose its own potential disasters? What have you forgotten to be afraid about?
Anne Holub received a MFA from the University of Montana and a MA from Hollins University. Her poetry has been featured on Chicago Public Radio and in The Mississippi Review, The Asheville Poetry Review, Phoebe and the anthology Bright Bones: Contemporary Montana Writing (Open Country Press 2018), among others. She lives and writes in Montana.
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR 27 Threats to Everyday Life by Anne Holub
Anne Holub’s extra-ordinary poems mark wayposts on a life examined with verve and smarts. They name fears we fear to name. They unfold questions. They do not flinch. Changing landscapes, memory, bees, the body’s gifts and vulnerabilities: they’re all here, and with them, the sweet surprises of the poet’s art—of well-chosen words, well shaped.
–Jeanne Larsen, author of What Penelope Chooses: poems
As is often the case with our most primal words, “threat” is an old one, and understandably so, with its denotation of impending danger, menace, or coercion — forces environmental, societal, and somatic that have accompanied human life since its beginnings. Anne Holub’s 27 Threats to Everyday Life offers a litany of such potential vexations, ranging from the personal and quotidian (dental plaque and insomnia, for example, or an air-conditioner “held high above with nothing / more than optimism /and a brick”) to the globally dire (mudslides, wildfires, floods, the corona virus). Sonically attuned to the inextricable links between humans and the world they inhabit, these poems are a bellwether, timeless and timely, offering, with a convincing dose of hope, both “a warning [and] a watch” for our imperiled moment.
–Lisa Russ Spaar, author of Madrigalia: New & Selected Poems
In a hazardous world, and across wild landscapes at once beautiful and threatening, Anne Holub‘s poems keep vigil. Even as they interrogate our notions of safety and wholeness, they find small mercies, too. This is a remarkable collection about the ways we survive, despite everything.
–Wendy McClure, author of The Wilder Life

"An explosive, electric, crackling revival. Directed with gleeful energy by Neil Pepe, Sam Rockwell makes a great occasion of a great role, with coiled and then terrifyingly uncoiled ~Jesse Green, New York Times (CRITIC'S PICK) "A pass-the-popcorn revival of this carnivorous drama! Huge, mesmerizing and fast. Now more than ever, American Buffalo feels as if it's about us. Laurence Fishburne delivers a commanding portrayal." ~Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post "Sam Rockwell is volcanic!" ~Charles Isherwood, The Wall Street Journal "A work of genius." ~Chris Jones, The Chicago Tribune "Dynamite! A quicksilver evening of verbal grenades." ~Peter Marks, The Washington Post "A damning a portrait of our money-driven culture. Darren Criss is heartbreaking." ~Elsa Gardner, New York Sun "As relevant to contemporary American life as ever." ~Christian Holub, Entertainment Weekly "A vivid comic indictment." ~Helen Shaw, New York Magazine

Neil Morris, speaking to Alan Lomax in 1959:
“Well, when I was just a small boy, Old Uncle Milt Oldfield…Billy Oldfield, the Congressman from Arkansas for so long, it is his father. He and my father are awfully close friends. And they were discussing music. They were music teachers both of them.
“And uh, and they said, dad did and Uncle Milt sanctioned what he said, that MUSIC HAD NO END. That you could learn all the other guy [or girl] learned, and after you got that done they would then, something else would crop up. That uh, that you, that was the reason why that uh, music advanced. That’s why that you would get a better music in one generation maybe that is, uh, IT WOULD FIT THE TIMES IN WHICH THEY LIVED.”
[Lomax: “What about music on the grapevine?”]
“Welllll, they said that MUSIC GREW LIKE THE GRAPEVINE THAT IS NEVER PRUNED. That each year it’d…it’d put on a little bit more. That was what they said, now, about it. Any further questions?”’

I do not believe we can simply reject the various utterances that contain anti-Jewish dimensions as insignificant for [Nietzsche’s] thinking, as something extraordinary that has nothing to do with his “genuine” philosophical outlook. They must in some fashion diminish our regard for other aspects of his thought. We encounter a similar case in recent times with one of the most enthusiastic commentators on Nietzsche in the twentieth century, Martin Heidegger. Although a careful reading of Heidegger’s writings in the early years of the Third Reich, especially his official statements as rector of the University of Freiburg after Hitler came to power, as well as his actions as an academic leader, indicate a reprehensible adherence to anti-Jewish views, the recent publication of his “Black Notebooks” demonstrates beyond a doubt that he regurgitated some of the worst platitudes regarding Jewry and its role in his contemporary world. What is disturbing about certain passages in these writings from the 1930s and early 1940s is that these Judeophobic remarks do not occur in political speeches or personal commentary but as part of his philosophical reflections on Western metaphysics. We have seen that some of Nietzsche’s observations on Jews and Judaism similarly occur in passages—published or unpublished—that are concerned with issues of philosophical import. The connection is fairly obvious in the early writings, where Nietzsche, as a Wagnerian acolyte, was expounding on the deficiencies of modernity, part of which related directly to the Jews as prototypes for the social and cultural ills of contemporary Germany. But we also encounter a heavy dependence on Jewry in Nietzsche’s late moral theory and his comments on decadence and degeneration. We may be unable to find any immediate relationship of Jews and Judaism to specific notions traditionally advanced as important for Nietzsche’s “genuine” philosophy, such as Eternal Recurrence or the Will to Power. But his habit of mind, as we have seen it manifested in his dealings with Jews and Judaism, and his lack of self-reflection on his own prejudices surely leave a mark on other aspects of his thought. We should be wary of trusting a thinker who was unable to escape in this instance—as well as in other instances, such as his obvious misogyny—the heritage he is often credited with overcoming.
… For most commentators Nietzsche will remain, as he should, a stimulating, provocative thinker and writer, but, in light of his position on the Jewish Question, students of his thought would be well advised to approach him more warily, more critically, and more skeptically than they have in the recent past.

Any hot takes on Neetcha?
A reactionary crackpot, but a useful one. I have more to say about him here.
One thing that is kinda funny about a lot of popular defenses of Fried Rick Neetcha (”he wasn’t a nihilist,” “he wasn’t an anti-Semite,” etc.) is that they manage to be wrongheaded even if they’re responding to popular misreadings/nonreadings.
Take for example the second one: there was a post-WWII effort by Kaufmann, Deleuze, etc. to rescue Nietzsche from his intellectual capture by the Nazis. A lot of this ends up looking roughly like this specifically as it relates to anti-Semitism: 1) Nietzsche explicitly condemned anti-Semites, like Wagner or his brother-in-law. 2) The nastier, apparently anti-Semitic passages of texts like Genealogy (about the Jewish “priestly” class) are really directing their ire at Christianity rather than Judaism. 3) Nietzsche professed himself to be a philo-Semite.
These can all be accurate and still not meaningfully address the question of Nietzsche’s anti-Semitism, since he was a 19th-century German who was quite influenced by Wagner and had a non-negligible interest in the language of “race” (like, one of the key quotes that people use as a defense of Nietzsche here is this: “The Jews, however, are beyond any doubt the strongest, toughest, and purest race now living in Europe; they know how to prevail even under the worst conditions (even better than under favourable conditions), by means of virtues that today one would like to mark as vices – thanks above all to a resolute faith that need not be ashamed before “modern ideas”). Hell, his own critical framework is one that would suggest that it’s not so easy as just explicitly saying “I oppose anti-Semitism.”
(There’s a book by Richard Holub on this particular subject, Nietzsche’s Jewish Problem, the excerpts and reviews of which I’ve read make it seem pretty good.)
On an entirely unrelated note, I kinda want to explore connections and points of synchronicity between Neetcha and Spiders Georg Wilhelm Hegel, since those two are often set up against each other as antagonists.

Led Bib - It's Morning - new album; now with vocals! (RareNoise)
From the Homeric invocation of ethereal opener “Atom Story,” it becomes stunningly clear that It’s Morning, the latest album from the uncategorizable UK ensemble Led Bib, is meant to take the listener on a journey. The wide-ranging and evocative set is also a testament to the distance the band has travelled on its own evolutionary path. If not the endpoint, it at least sits at a far-flung guidepost along a transformative odyssey undertaken by the eclectic ensemble. Led Bib has long been renowned for its skronky, livewire fusion of exploratory jazz improvisation with the brute force of heavy rock and the labyrinthine architecture of prog. It’s Morning (due out September 27, 2019 via RareNoise Records) retains an identifiable sense of adventure and virtuosity while marking a vast departure from previous recordings, veering into the realm of elusive, poetic narrative and lysergic beauty.
The most immediately apparent change from past Led Bib outings is the addition of vocals, folding the band’s boundary-stretching vocabulary into gorgeous if complex song forms. The band’s core line-up – Holub, bassist Liran Donin, saxophonists Chris Williams and Pete Grogan, and new keyboardist Elliot Galvin – are joined by a pair of gifted vocalists: Sharron Fortnam, a co-founder of the North Sea Radio Orchestra whose intoxicating mezzo soprano has also graced recordings by the noted British prog-punk band Cardiacs; and Jack Hues, best known as frontman for the 80s new wave band Wang Chung. Sharron Fortnam- vocals Chris Williams – alto saxophone Pete Grogan – alto and tenor saxophone Elliot Galvin – keyboards and piano Liran Donin – bass, backing vocals on track 2 Mark Holub – drums Also featuring: Jack Hues – vocals Susanna Gartmayer – bass clarinet Irene Kepl – violin Noid – cello
