Natasha Romanoff-Centric Masterlist 2
part one
although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight (ao3) - paperclipbitch bruce/natasha T, 6k
Summary: Post-movie. “You shouldn’t google yourself,” Natasha tells Bruce.
american pie (ao3) - ashlearose13 G, 4k
Summary: Here's the thing about Natasha Romanoff: before she was theirs, she was her own.
Common Ground (ao3) - Writegirl natasha/nick T, 4k
Summary: Natalia Romanova was many things: a killer by thirteen, a Black Widow at fifteen, on the run from the Red Room by sixteen and captured by SHIELD at seventeen.
“You have a simple choice in front of you. Either you want to live, in which case you give us your total cooperation. Or you want to die, in which case the kill order will be carried out within the next ten minutes.” The agent stood and went to the door. “You have five minutes to make a decision.”
counterfeit and counterpart (ao3) - Frea_O maria/steve T, 28k
Summary: Five times Maria Hill doesn’t understand Natasha Romanoff, and why she might be better off that way.
four times somebody trusted Natasha Romanoff (and one time Natasha trusted somebody) (ao3) - zauberer_sirin bruce/natasha T, 2k
Summary: Natasha is not used to being treated as something other than a threat.
I'll build a house inside of you (ao3) - magdaliny T, 19k
Summary: Natalia is stacking blocks very carefully when the adults come into the room. None of them look at her, because they're all looking at her father. He's wearing combat gear, and the hair on the left side of his head is slicked back with blood. He smells like smoke and something unnameable, sweet and dark and a little sickly in her nose.
Father is saying, “Don't be ridiculous. The only thing children are good at is disobeying.”
i'm so tired (of being afraid) (ao3) - himynameisv natasha/matt T, 35k
Summary: Steve glances at her with what she can only describe as a small, fond smirk. "You're not alone in this," he murmurs.
She breathes in, gathers up the courage to grasp him on the shoulder. "Neither are you," she says.
They stand there, mourning together in the silence, because that's how the two of them have always been.
(Or: Natasha Romanoff had three families. She's going to get them back and/or die trying.)
i'm staying at my parents’ house and the road not taken looks real good now (ao3) - hannaenomia maria/natasha N/R, 22k
Summary: Natasha takes The Avengers to her family's farm to recover after their first run-in with the Scarlet Witch and promptly flirts with Maria Hill in front of everyone, whether she admits it or not. (Black Widow comes before Age of Ultron in this storyline)
In Your Hand (ao3) - SpideySense777 natasha/tony M, 32k
Summary: Major Spoilers for Black Widow if you haven't seen it.
Tony and Natasha overcoming her betrayal after Civil War and finding peace in the fact they are screwed up people.
i see things that nobody else sees (ao3) - burnthatbridgewhenwegetthere T, 1k
Summary: before she was the Black Widow, she was just a black widow. Natasha, Natalia, Natalie- it's hard to be a person when you have specifically been taught to not be one.
the struggle is silent.
Mama Bear (ao3) - Dira Sudis (dsudis) clint/laura T, 2k
Summary: How the Black Widow became Auntie Nat.
melt (ao3) - romanovasquinn T, 5k
Summary: Perhaps she did not have a heavier hand in the transaction, Natasha thought, perhaps she loved me when she first saw me open my eyes.
She found herself living on perhapses so that she would never land on anything definitive. Perhapses were the thing that kept her from thinking about how unloved she was from the day she was born. It’s a dirty secret she kept hidden in the crux of her heart.
Cold, Natasha thought. She must feel very cold."
---
Melina attempts to reconcile with Natasha by taking her to her biological mother's unmarked grave. It goes as well as you'd expect.
music save your mortal soul (ao3) - nunya_bznz_babes G, 3k
Summary: The girls leave behind little things that never last long - an empty bed with the slight indent of their small body on the mattress, drops of blood in the training room, hair follicles and bits of dead skin that would become the dust that settled in barren corners or coated the lungs of the survivors, the instructors. Clothes to be handed down to the next set of potential Widows.
Natalia won't let herself become one of the dead girls, the ghost girls, the tiny bones rotting under layers of soil. But she remembers their names.
Or: Natasha Romanoff
My Unshaped Form (ao3) - atrata bruce/natasha E, 26k
Summary: Of all the people they could have sent, they send Bruce Banner. In his defense, he seems to realize he has no chance of finding her.
No Place In The World (ao3) - Mtabby2260 clint/laura T, 3k
Summary: "The ceremony is necessary for you to take your place in the world."
"I have no place in the world."
"Exactly."
off to the races (ao3) - Elekat G, 11k
Summary: Elementary School was torture. The kids didn't take it seriously, everything was useless information she would never need, oh, and Natasha hated gym class.
one of us will break it (ao3) - zauberer_sirin nick/natasha T, 1k
Summary: Natasha is not in the business of soft.
(Spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier)
September (ao3) - enigma731 pepper/tony, natasha/tony T, 12k
Summary: Natasha studies him for a long moment, trying to decide whether she believes this last assertion. “So basically you’re trying to make an invention to cure PTSD? Why not just go to therapy?”
Tony gives her a look. “You want to go to therapy?” Tony scoffs. “Besides. Like some doctor is going to know what to do about the fact that I have nightmares about aliens and wormholes.”
“Okay,” says Natasha. “So you’re inventing the world’s next great therapy contraption. What did you want from me?”
“Well." Tony turns back to the computer monitor in a movement that may or may not be to avoid her gaze. “It’s not working. Normally I’d ask Banner, but, well.” He huffs out a bitter laugh. “Besides, I hear you’re the one to ask about coding.”
Some Assembly Required (ao3) - AlphaFlyer clint/natasha T, 4k
Summary: "They say that when you go to the seven circles of Hell, IKEA has taken over the suburbs and parts of the ring road.” Natasha and Clint enter an alien universe.
Some Summers They Drop Like Flys (ao3) - kvikindi T, 5k
Summary: Natasha blew all her covers. It's a brave new world.
Training Wheels (ao3) - thetbone G, 13k
Summary: Natasha doesn’t know how to ride a bike, doesn’t know how to be part of a family, doesn’t know how to be free.
But she’s learning.
you taught me the courage of stars (before you left) (ao3) - wcndanat T, 5k
Summary: Madame B waits, waits, and waits, until she doesn’t anymore. She walks to the table in the corner of the room, picking up the gun sitting over it, and Melina’s breath falters (no, please, not Natasha, not her Natasha, not yet).
The glock slips in Sonja’s hands and Melina closes her eyes, just to open them a second later — she doesn’t want to see this, but she has to, — and that’s when it happens, so suddenly that the woman almost starts sobbing right there on the spot.
Natasha gets up.
or
five times someone witnessed Natasha saving herself, and the one time someone saw her giving up.

NEW YORK
“Can you find someone for me?” Clint asks Tony, looking around the room, and the technology it holds.
He can’t help but touch the screens and play with the holograms as he waits for Tony to reply.
“Can you pass me the copper wire?” Tony asks.
Clint hops up on the bench and throws it to him, his aim true.
“I can find anyone, if they want to be found, and even then, likely I can find them if they don’t want to be,” he answers distractedly.
“Can you hold this here?”
Clint hops down and pushes on the wire, analysing the circuitry and frowning.
“You’ve wired it wrong,” he surmises, pointing with his other hand.
Tony swears and rubs his face.
“How long have you been up for?” Clint asks, a pinch of worry for his friend and his insomniac ways.
Tony looks up and glances at the time.
Jarvis answers for him, “twenty six hours.”
Clint swears it’s sounds almost disapproving.
“What are you trying to do?” he asks, knowing that until the project has reached a satisfactory conclusion, there’s no way Tony will stop.
Rubbing his forehead, Tony shows him the circuit board connected to the towers alarm system, and automatic controls for system lockdown.
Clint frowns.
“Has there been any attempts to get in here?”
He doesn’t understand why Tony was upgrading the already functioning system.
He shakes his head.
“No, but I just..” he pauses.
“Who do you want me to find?”
Clint ignores him and without words helps, correcting the circuitry then placing the upgraded board into Tony’s hand.
“You know, if you get sleep, these things become easier,” he grins.
Tony rolls his eyes, the lower limbs of the suits attaching as he flies to the control box outside and installs the board quickly.
There’s a quick glow, and a light force field covers the tower before disappearing again.
Clint didn’t realise how big the project was, and smiles as Tony returns.
“Come get some food,” he prompts, holding the door open as the legs come away and he reaches ground again.
Tony obliges.
Heading to the kitchen, Clint explains about Gus.
The ex-carney, convenience store owner that stayed close to the circus and protected Clint from future foster homes and set him on the path of this life.
There’s some hesitation in the way Tony replies, and Clint doesn’t quite know if he should have trusted him with the story.
“Why do you want to see him again?” Tony asks, handing him a Stark-Pad.
Clint hesitates, feeling judged in the moment.
“I want to tell him about Barney, maybe just check that he’s okay. Thank him I suppose?”
He doesn’t know, not in any way he can put into words.
Tony is uncharacteristically quiet, before he takes the stark-pad off of Clint and opens up a data base, taking time, he seems to hack into some sort of data base.
It takes him a minute or so, before he hands the tablet back.
“He’s still in Iowa, Cedar Rapids, last known address was near the Prairie Park Fishery,” he pauses, “we can go now if you want?”
Clint stops in his tracks.
“What?”
Tony points upwards.
“Two hours, we can go there now if you want?”
Clint nods slowly.
“Yeah okay,” he says impulsively, “let me just send a message to Natasha, and let her know.”
Tony shrugs, “sure, I’ll be up at the hanger, if you ask Steve it will be a party.”
Clint decides on calling Natasha, feeling a slight urgency on getting going.
“Hey,” she picks up, after a beat.
“Hey,” he answers.
“I asked Tony to find Gus and he found him in like five seconds. He asked if we wanted to go visit, and I’ve said yes,” he says quickly.
“Doyouwannacome?”
Natasha takes a second before responding, and then tells him she’d meet him at the hanger.
He smiles. It’s like a road trip with his friends, something they’d do at the circus.
It’s seems somewhat fitting.
Picking up the phone again, he calls Steve.
“Hey man,” he says as the phone clicks over.
“Hey,” Steve replies.
“Natasha and Tony and I are going on a bit of trip to see an old friend I have in Iowa. Do you want to come?”
“When?” Steve asks.
“Now?”
Steve takes a moment and then agrees, Clint thinks he can hear the change in his tone, a small amount of pleasure at being invited.
“Come to the hanger when you can,” Clint tells him, “we’ll be waiting.”
.
The trip to Iowa is an exchange of stories. Clint starts by telling the story of Gus and how he taught him magic, he shows the others a trick and then produces a coin from Steve’s ear.
Much to his delight, Steve replicates the trick and produces two coins.
Tony, not to be outdone, produces two coins and a card.
Natasha bursts out laughing.
“You’re all magic nerds,” she says, joyfully.
The rest of the trip they try and outdo each other, Natasha taking the lead in flying the plane as they all show off random magic tricks, and teaching each other the ones they don’t know.
She gives them a ten minute warning and looks back to see Clint smiling, a true smile that had been so rare from the events of New York to learning of his brothers death.
She hopes this is positive and that Gus is the man Clint believes him to be.
Otherwise, she might kill him herself.
.
Clint knocks on the door.
Alone now, he wishes he hadn’t been so adamant to do this himself. He’d left Natasha with the others in the plane, promising to be back soon.
The anticipation feels heavy as he hears movement in the house and he hopes Tony was right in the address.
The door opens slowly, and Clint smiles lightly.
“Hello,” he opens, “I don’t know if you—“
“Clint?”
The door opens wider, revealing Gus, now older but still the same man.
“Hi,” he says shyly.
“Clint!”
He pulls him into a hug and Clint feels himself sink into it, feeling like a kid again.
“Come in,” Gus asks, ushering him through the door.
“Can I get you anything?
Clint doesn’t get a chance to answer as Gus disappears into the kitchen and returns with beer and a bottle opener.
He takes it and opens them both, offering it to cheers which Gus does with a smile.
“Clint,” he says, almost in reverence.
“How are you?”
“I’m good,” Clint replies, not sure what to say.
He came here to say that Barney was dead. To thank him for helping him when he was a child, to pointing him in the direction of the military.
“I — wanted to find you,” he starts.
Gus stands, finds an album on the bench and hands it to Clint.
“Open it,” he gestures.
The album has photos, some articles from the circus, pictures of Clint he’d never seen before, gently he turns the pages, emotion welling inside.
He can’t speak.
Gently touching the photos, he sees himself holding the bow and arrow as a young boy, stance strong and gaze focussed.
“That’s my favourite,” Gus says, watching Clint carefully, “you had such natural talent from the get go, and even if archery didn’t get you famous, I think you would have been a fantastic pickpocket.”
Clint huffs a laugh, turning the page.
“And now you’re an Avenger?”
There’s clippings from the paper from the last twelve months.
Of Tony, Steve and Thor, of him and Natasha. Articles and pictures.
Clint thinks it’s one of the kindest things someone has ever done.
He smiles.
“I’m just a human, amongst superhero’s, metal men and gods,” he laughs, starting at the start again to take the photos in.
“Maybe it’s what they need, to keep them in line,” Gus retorts.
Clint stops at a picture.
Barney stands arms crossed with a smile as Clint does a handstand.
He stares at it, and forces breath.
Barney.
“He’s dead,” he whispers, taking the photo out, he shows it Gus.
“He’s dead,” he repeats again.
Gus hobbles over to sit with Clint, taking the photo and then handing it back.
“I know,” he nods, and hugs Clint in a side hug.
“He came here, a couple of years ago, asking after you, I showed him and told him you had gone into the military.”
He turns the page and Clint finds the picture of himself in uniform.
“He was so proud of you,” Gus tells him.
“I think he wanted to tell you.”
Clint can’t help it; he cries.
For the loss of his brother, for all the words left unsaid and the time they’d never get back.
“Do you think he knew I loved him?” he asks, voice as small as a child’s.
“Of course he did,” Gus nods.
He closes the album, and motions for Clint to follow him.
“Barney stayed here, for a little while at least, and drew some pictures. I held onto them, as I hoped— I wished I would see you again.”
He opens the door and pulls out some pictures from a drawer.
The pictures are of Clint and Barney as children, their faces small and chubby.
Clint feels the tears on his face as he furiously wipes at them.
“Your brother, he was complicated and could be harsh and I think he wanted to protect you but didn’t know how… You were both so young.”
Gus looks down.
“I think I failed you both but I did the best I could,” he admits.
Clint shakes his head.
“No,” he refutes, “you saved my life, probably Barney’s too. I came to thank you.”
Gus waves him off.
“Take them,” he tells Clint, “they’re yours, the album too if you want anything from it.”
Clint nods, finding the album, knowing what pictures he wants and the ones he wants to show Natasha, maybe even the others.
He sits back down, not quite ready to leave yet.
“I’m going to get married,” he confesses.
Gus looks up, his smile wide.
“Will you come?”
The nod and laugh is infectious.
“Of course, of course I will,” he agrees.
He sits back and takes a sip of the still cold beer.
“Tell me about her,” he asks.
.
The plane home is in darkness, as Clint shares the chocolate and pictures that Gus sent with him.
He tells the stories behind the pictures, prompting Steve and Tony to tell their own.
Natasha holds onto the picture of Clint and Barney and stares at it for a long time.
“He looks like you,” she whispers later.
“Remind me,” he tells her, “remind me to tell you the story behind that one.”
Natasha hands it back to him, and nods, bringing her head to his and pushing it against his.
“I’m proud of you,” she whispers, so the others can’t hear.
“It’s hard facing our pasts, and I’m glad it went well.”
He regards Natasha and all the history she has with facing her past; the good and the bad.
He nods.
“Me too, Nat.”

Tumblr media
your leg bounces up and down nervously as you sit in the quinjet with bruce. at age sixteen, you are currently the youngest (and only) avenger in training. if it were up to your mother, you would be safe in the tower with maria hill but you are a valuable asset. you are the hidden trick the avengers have up their sleeve.
you were found in an abandoned hydra base by clint barton, having been left to die after the scientists had no use for you. in the two years you were with hydra, they had tried countless of experiments on you, each one seemingly failed. what they didn’t know was that one of them had worked- you were now enhanced. but your powers always had a mind of their own, and it had kept itself hidden- up until you were taken in by clint and laura.
it was one of laura’s favourite stories to tell, much to clint’s displeasure. they had been moving into a new place, a bigger one to accommodate you and the coming baby. clint had been bringing in boxes after boxes and you stuck close to laura’s side, both of you watching him do the work. as clint carried a particularly heavy set of boxes, he tripped and suddenly you were on your feet, hands shooting out with a blue magic flowing from them. clint had braced himself for the hard impact of the the ground but when he opened his eyes, he saw the boxes floating up the walkway to the house and he was held up by your magic. you slowly righted him and the three of you just stood in stunned silence before clint broke it.
“you’re telling me you could’ve used your magic for all these boxes?!”
to their credit, the bartons took your newly found powers in stride. they helped you work on training it, allowing you to use them for mundane tasks to help you get used to them. in their care, you slowly flourished. that’s when they found about your mother.
you rarely spoke about your time in hydra, but once you started speaking about your mama, it’s like you never wanted to stop. before hydra, you remember a woman with hair as red as yours. she trained you, taught you everything she could before you were taken away. you spoke about her promise, and the bartons never knew what to say- not wanting to let you lose the little hope you had left.
-
two years after natasha romanoff’s graduation ceremony, a baby was placed in her arms. she was told that it was hers, born from her egg, her own daughter. she was told to train you, and so she did. the red room had counted on her training keeping her impartial, but a mother’s instinct is something they could never smother. you were six when they had realised their mistake- and they ripped you away from her, given to hydra for their experiments. taking you away was their second mistake, because natasha ran. she spent the next three years staying hidden all while tracking you down. when she finally does, she shows up on clint’s doorstep with a proposition. in exchange for her and your safety, she will defect to shield and take down the red room.
you were the ace of the team for two main reasons, your power and your training. not only were you on the way to becoming just as skilled as natasha, your powers added an extra advantage. telekinesis and your ability to form shields stronger than the hulk as well as cap’s shield meant that you could do beyond what anyone else in the team could.
the team had argued back and forth before you were allowed to come on this mission. but you knew they needed you, especially with wanda and pietro maximoff in the picture.
“guys? is this a code green?” bruce’s voice snaps you out of your nerves, but it only grows when you hear nothing but static.
you take a deep breath, pushing yourself up from where you were sitting on the ground. “stay here, i’ll go in.”
before bruce can stop you, your hands glow a brilliant blue as you speed off to the ship. you let your eyes close momentarily as you try and remember everything natasha taught you. your eyes flutter open when you feel the hum of someone’s magic- it had to be wanda. zoning in on it, you speed up and you can only hope you are able to take her on.
you stay hidden as you walk through the ship. you hear thor’s words through your intercom and your steps speed up. a flash of red has you tensing- but the shield you had around you repels the cloud of red that surrounds you. you hear a gasp as you push your magic out, and you pull yourself and wanda into a room to your left.
wanda’s strong, you can see it in the way her power swirls a brilliant red. but her training was incomparable to yours, as thor had been the one in charge of your training. your magic pushes her against the wall, another barrier coming up to block the entrance of the room should the other maximoff decide to appear.
the red smoke disappears and you have to stop the gasp that falls from your lips. you knew from the moment maria pulled up their photos that the twins were the ones you had met all those years ago. but seeing her in person sucks the wind out of you. it seems that wanda recognises you too as she stops struggling against your magic.
you both pause as you regard each other, the sounds of the fight around you growing fainter. you break the silence first.
“hi wanda.”your voice is shaky and you have to resist the urge to drop your magic just to hug her. the twins had been the only reason you survived in hydra. their presence had been the biggest comfort through all the pain the scientists put you through day after day.
“im sorry.” it comes out as almost a whisper, and you see the way wanda’s eyes glisten “we should’ve fought harder for you. to take you along. we thought..”
the unsaid words hang in the air. you swallow thickly.
“why are you working for them? did they-” wanda’s eyes harden as her next words spill out “did they take you too? did they use you? experiment on you?”
you shake your head, “no. they saved me- the archer, he found me and took me in. my magic was from one of the experiments they did, it just didn’t become active til after.”
wanda regards you quietly, and you feel a bead of sweat trickle down the back of your neck. it’s now or never.
“come with us. the both of you, please. ultron he.. he wants to destroy the world, not save it. please, don’t fall for it. you can still walk away.” your voice is almost pleading.
“if ultron can’t tell the difference between saving the world and destroying it- where do you think he gets that? why would i work with him.” she hisses, and you remember the way you comforted her after her nightmares. the way she would mumble in her sleep, begging tony stark to spare her and her brother from death.
“because you are better than him. if tony stark can’t tell the difference- you can. you can make the choice.”
wanda sees your eyes glow and you pull pietro into the room, your magic swirling around him. you look at the both of them, and wanda is captivated at the way your power flows around you, surrounding you in a soft glow.
“i know you were dealt shitty cards. but you choose the life you want to lead at the end of the day.” you know that you’re making progress, however small, because not once has wanda tried to use her powers on you. “so please, make the better choice here. help us stop ultron.”
the twins look at each other, and you watch carefully. pietro turns to you then, speaking to you for the first time.
“you’ve grown up well.” your lips stretch into a soft smile. “but i don’t want to work with tony stark.”
“then don’t. think of it as working with me, with the others.” you think of the rest of your team, and you can only hope that they made it out safe. or that natasha hadn’t gone full mama bear mode when she realised you’re not on the quinjet. “tony stark is doing his best to right his wrongs and i know he has a long way to go. but right now this is beyond him.”
the twins share another glance and you can see pietro sigh. you got them.
the walk to the quinjet was silent, the twins in front of you and your magic on the standby. you see a figure run towards you and you place a hand on wanda’s shoulder when you see her hands raise almost instinctively. you step in front of the twins and natasha engulfs you in a fierce hug.
she pulls away and inspects you, her warm hand on your cheek as she looks for any injuries before scanning the rest of your body. when she decides you’re safe, she breaths a sigh of relief. her gaze shifts to behind you where the twins are still standing. you see the rest of the team come out and steve speaks first.
“he got away with the vibranium. we don’t know where he went,” he looks to the twins “i don’t suppose you two have any idea what he plans to do with the vibranium?”
when the twins shake their head, tony lets out a scoff and the twins immediately tense up.
“cut it out stark.” the words tumble from your lips before you can stop them and he looks at you incredulously.
“you do realise they could still be in cahoots with him right? dont you find it a little strange?” tony raises a brow at you and you roll your eyes. the rest of the team watches you quietly, natasha reaching out to rub your arm.
“they’re on our side now, and i’m not gonna let your ego drive them away. i trust them and if you don’t then suck it up.” you pause before adding, “if they go, i go. if you choose to not have them come with us when we do find ultron you won’t have me either.”
you see the way tony flinches and you knew you hit a nerve. you feel a little guilty, tony had been good to you over the years. but he also created a robot that wants to destroy the world and now that the twins are back, you don’t want to lose them again.

I haven't read any STEVE/BUCKY FIC in the last five years or so (Endgame really burned me hard), BUT I can at least offer what I read up to that point! Most of my recs are from around when Captain America: The Winter Soldier first came out (some from before, so there's a few speculation fics) and then I was ready semi-regularly up through Inifinity War, so these may be a bit dated but also the fandom had some ABSOLUTE BANGER fics from that era! I mostly read from about 2014 to 2019 and I can't say how well many of these held up, but I know my tastes haven't changed that much, so there should hopefully be something for anyone interested here! Anyway, I think I'm finally Not As Mad As I Once Was enough to read fic again/celebrate the 10th anniversary of TWS, but also let's be clear. I will forever hold a grudge about what Marvel did with Steve and Bucky post-TWS, that was bullshit from start to finish. ESPECIALLY the finish, oh my god okay so I'm still Actually That Mad and-- NO, OKAY, HAVE SOME FIC RECS BEFORE I MELT DOWN AGAIN.
CAPTAIN AMERICA FIC RECS YOU'LL FIND HERE:
STEVE/BUCKY SHIP FICS
STEVE/BUCKY - PRE-THE WINTER SOLDIER SPECULATION
STEVE/BUCKY - POST-THE WINTER SOLDIER
STEVE/BUCKY - POST-INFINITY WAR
STEVE & BUCKY-CENTRIC FICS (WITH A LITTLE OF EVERYONE ELSE, TOO)
STEVE&BUCKY&CAST - POST-THE WINTER SOLDIER
CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE/BUCKY FIC RECS: ✦ Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Take Me In by victoria_p (musesfool), steve rogers/bucky barnes + natasha romanoff, reunion fic, 4.1k Bucky finds himself, and then he finds Steve. ✦ you got blood on your hands (and i know it’s mine) by nighimpossible, steve rogers/bucky barnes + natasha romanoff + brief mention of sam wilson/natasha romanoff, suicidal ideation, 2.9k Bucky refuses to see Steve after his deprogramming. ✦ take all you can carry by havisham, steve/bucky & cast, 2.4k    Bucky Barnes reassembles himself to a reasonable degree and makes romantic overtures to one Steve Rogers. It’s happened before and will happen again. ✦ I’d Know That Face Anywhere by Shay081793, steve/bucky, NSFW, divergent timeline, 2.7k The 107th never got captured. Instead, Bucky Barnes is in the audience when that clown "Captain America" performs to rally the troops, and holy shit, that clown is Steve Rogers. ✦ and we are finally home by springsoldier (ladydaredevil), sam & bucky + steve/bucky + implied sam/natasha + implied bucky/natasha, 7.3k The Winter Soldier shows up in Sam's kitchen, one morning. He deals with it. (Natasha helps. Steve would, if they let him.) ✦ Capture the Flag by Shiny_n_new, steve/bucky + sam, dark au, 9.4k wip Bucky has always been willing to do Captain America’s dirty work. This was no different. Sometimes, the day isn’t won by high ideals or bravery or compassion. Sometimes, it’s won by monsters. ✦ Memories are Made of This by eleveninches, steve/bucky & natasha & sam, 13.2k Nearly a year after turning himself into SHIELD and the Avengers, Bucky struggles to find himself in the 21st century. Unfortunately, no one told him about the aliens.
✦ but hey, you’re all right by beardsley, steve/bucky + other marvel characters, 5.5k Yes, this is the story where the Winter Soldier is a Russian mail-order bride. Everything goes about as well as you’d expect. ✦ I Left Myself in 1943 (Who the hell is Bucky?) by originalblue, steve/bucky + sam + natasha + other marvel characters, 21k You have a mission, but your mind is being split in two, and there's a man on the bridge, and you know him. You don't know why, but you know him. ✦ sam deserves better than these assholes by lazulisong, steve/bucky + sam + natasha + other marvel characters, 18k IM SORRY BUT SAM WILSON STARING IN BAFFLED WONDER AT STEVE AND BUCKY AND HOW WEIRD THEY ARE ABOUT EACH OTHER ✦ broken pieces (the rough edges remix) by legete, steve/bucky, 2.1k It’s wrong, he knows it’s wrong, but sometimes Bucky prefers the nightmares that actually happened. ✦ Talk Dirty to Me by PeetaPan, steve/bucky, NSFW, wall sex, 2.5k Steve spends months tracking Bucky down, and when he eventually find him, it’s in a nightclub in Europe. ✦ the body adrift by Febricant, steve/bucky + sam, mildy nsfw, 4.2k Steve has no drawings of Bucky from before. Those are all gone, destroyed in the war or by his own hand; it wouldn’t do for anyone to see how easily the details came from memory, how often Bucky was in his thoughts. ✦ Tony Stark and the Illegal Cross-Country Road Trip from Hell by ActionAddiction, steve/bucky + tony + sam + clint + natasha + fury, 21.8k wip A stir-crazy genius, a secretly sentimental assassin, two soldiers lost in time, and an undercover archer without an identity zigzag across the continental United States in Fury’s stolen van. Or: How Bucky Met Steve (Again)
✦ Didn’t know I was lonely till I saw your face by gunboots, steve/bucky + bucky/natasha + sam + bruce + tony + xavier, 2.9k There are words on paper, actors in movies, and a grand story that fills a whole corner of a museum defined by history. There are words, there are pictures, there are movies, but they’re limited, fragmented. They can’t do justice to the sniper that Captain America trusted, the man that grew into a boy in the streets of Brooklyn with his best friend at his side. The man that could be James Buchanan Barnes leaves a legacy that is barely defined. The man that Steve Rogers says he is. ✦ the inaccuracy of historical wartime dramas by Mici (noharlembeat), steve/bucky + sam + natasha, 3k (or: Steve has feelings, and shouldn’t ever watch television) ✦ The Shape I’m In by radialarch, steve/bucky, 2.6k [AU where Bucky never fell.] They win the war. Steve and Bucky come home and deal with their feelings. ✦ дорогой by smilebackwards, steve/bucky + other marvel characters, canon divergence, 1.8k “Are you goddamn kidding me?” Fury asks when Steve shows up to the rendezvous point in Fredericksberg with the Winter Soldier. ✦ have you ever thought just maybe by Desdemon, steve/bucky + tony/pepper + other marvel characters, humor, 4.4k “JARVIS,” Tony called thoughtfully. “Yes, sir?” “Those young people are in love,” he said. ✦ Use Your Damn Words by wilddragonflying, steve/bucky, NSFW, omegaverse, 4.2k There’s murmuring, indistinct voices, all around him; all he catches, at first, are the occasional words. “—mated.” “—no difference—“ “—make him forget—“ That’s when Bucky starts fighting. ✦ It’s an Adequate Life, Bucky Barnes by what_alchemy, steve/bucky, it’s a wonderful life fusion, 10.2k This is a world without Bucky Barnes.
✦ and it starts just where the light exists by caughtinanocean, steve/bucky, mildly nsfw, 3.4k In which Bucky can’t admit the things he needs, but Steve knows them anyway, and Steve and Bucky are definitely a couple, even if they don’t know it. ✦ tango till they’re sore by sciencemyfiction, steve/bucky, nsfw, 4k Four shorts about Steve and Bucky, and romance, and sex, and dominance, and grief, and forgiveness. ✦ Permission by derekstilinski, steve/bucky + other marvel characters, 2.5k After Bucky’s captured by SHIELD, they put him in a holding cell, and strip him of everything but his clothes. He’s dirty, damaged, and Steve can’t just watch him like that, protocol or not. ✦ Milkshakes & Penguin Suits by TheLocket, steve/bucky, fluff, 2.9k At the latest Stark party, Steve and Bucky share a milkshake — and spend the evening together. ✦ Practical Mathematics by Grey_Bard, steve/bucky + steve/peggy + steve/peggy/bucky + tony, 1.7k After a hard shift saving the world, Stark - in his infinite wisdom - has decided to bond with Steve by talking about his favorite subject. Well, third favorite, after building things and smart-mouthing people. Steve is pretty sure none of his experiences really count. Tony is starting to wonder what Steve’s definition of “is” is. ✦ how happy must be angels thus employed by lanyon , steve/bucky + clint/coulson, mildly nsfw, humor, 2k It begins entirely accidentally. Clint walks in on Bucky and Steve in a compromising position and then Bucky escalates by tapping a private line between Clint and Phil. Also known as The One With The Cock-Blocking Competition (and it’s all fun and games until Phil and Steve find out.) ✦ Fate by grumpyowls, steve/bucky + peggy, 2.1k Bucky finds a drawing and it turns out to mean something more than he thought.
✦ One More Time by DevBasaa, steve/bucky, pre-serum, ~1k Steve’s clueless and Bucky’s not yet ready to acknowledge these feelings. But that doesn’t stop him from having them. Set before Bucky ships out, but after Steve receives his A1. ✦ Bucky and Bear by fromgoodbones, steve/bucky, fluffy, ~1k Steve gets Bucky a cat. ✦ Size Isn’t A Problem by bondboy68, steve/bucky, NSFW, 1.8k It’s the first time Bucky has seen Steve naked in some seventy-odd years, and things have definitely changed.
STEVE/BUCKY - PRE-THE WINTER SOLDIER SPECULATION:
✦ devil’s gonna follow me (wherever I go) by Lyaka, steve/bucky & natasha & cast, the winter soldier speculation, 63k The man who used to be Bucky Barnes lined up his shot. His finger twitched, only once, very precisely. Help me, the bullet sang. Ninety-eight floors below him, the bullet glanced off a vibranium shield with a musical ping. And Steve Rogers looked up. ✦ And it felt like a kiss by orphan_account, steve /bucky & natasha & sam, the winter soldier spoilers, ~1k We can’t stop feeling Winter Soldier feelings. And neither can Bucky or Steve. ✦ testament by paxlux, steve/bucky + other marvel characters, the winter soldier speculation fic, 10.6k His memory runs backwards in crooked bright flashes, hard as the noise flare of an assault rifle. ✦ persistence of memory by hollimichele, steve/bucky/natasha, NSFW, the winter soldier speculation, 11.5k It’s a nondescript sort of a Wednesday morning when the Winter Soldier walks into SHIELD headquarters, bold as brass, and announces his intention to surrender. ✦ To Be Modified As Necessary by ignipes, steve/bucky & bucky/natasha & clint/natasha & thor/jane & avengers, the winter soldier speculation, 5.9k They only need ten rules to ensure (relatively) peaceful cohabitation. ✦ lights at two dollars a strand by legete, steve/bucky + tony, the winter soldier speculation, 1.4k They don’t mean to decorate for Christmas. It just sorta…happens.
STEVE/BUCKY - POST-THE WINTER SOLDIER: ✦ Out of the Dead Land by orphan_account, steve/bucky + sam + natasha + nick fury + other marvel characters, nsfw in one scene at the end, 62.7k Someone is building machines that look and act like people. Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier tries to be Bucky Barnes. ✦ this is a back alley by saintsideways, steve/bucky & natasha & sam, the winter soldier spoilers, 14.2k Here is the only thing you know: the body remembers. ✦ your blue-eyed boys by Feather (lalaietha), steve/bucky & cast, 123.3k Steve has no plan. Not because he hadn't tried to make one. He'd tried to make lots of plans. Plan, adapt, plan again, tried to think of every contingency. [post-Winter Soldier recovery fic] ✦ The man on the bridge by boopboop, steve/bucky & tony/pepper & clint/natasha & cast, 107.5k Steve Rogers turning up at Tony's door with an amnesiac assassin - who may or may not have some of Tony's personally designed hardware attached where his arm should be - well that's just far too interesting to turn away, even if Tony is trying to avoid all things S.H.I.E.L.D these days. ✦ Soft Spot for the Hell Raisin’ Boy by ifeelbetter, sam & bucky + steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, (some) humor, 1.9k The Winter Soldier takes an interest in Sam Wilson. Bucky Barnes wants to tell him how to be Steve Rogers’s best friend. ✦ Reconstruction Site by EmilianaDarling, steve/bucky + sam, the winter soldier spoilers, 7.6k He is the Winter Soldier. He is James Buchanan Barnes. He’s not one and he’s not the other, and he’s not sure if that makes him anything worth saving. In which the Winter Soldier leads Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson on a wild goose chase through Eastern Europe so that he can learn more about the man who actually thinks he can be saved.
✦ hold me tight by hollimichele, bucky/steve + sam + natasha, nsfw, the winter soldier spoilers, 11.1k In the old days, before the war, Steve got cold at night. That was all it was, at first. ✦ A Bullet in the Barrel (of your best guy’s gun) by lc2l, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, canon divergence (sort of), violence, 6k You return to the concrete hole in the ground where the mission is not dead and not in the sewers and is looking at you. “Bucky,” says Rogers, Steve (deceased). ✦ Sleeperhold by Argyle, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 3.2k He’s hardwired to disappear. ✦ lost my fear of falling by ftmsteverogers, steve/bucky + natasha + sam, 1.8k “It’s been two weeks,” Natasha says, pressing a coffee cup into Steve’s hand. “How long are we going to do this?” Steve watches the steam curl into question marks above his cup. “I know he’s still in there,” he says, and that’s that. ✦ but the fires are coming by stitchingatthecircuitboard, steve/bucky + bucky & natasha, the winter soldier spoilers, 4k He does not remember, except that is better than being made to forget, again, and again, and again. He does not go to Brooklyn. ✦ we did not make ourselves by M_Leigh, steve/bucky + sam + natasha + tony, the winter soldier spoilers, 25.1k It is like steel, the determination inside of you that tells you you will achieve this, that you will find him. Nothing will stop you. You are two sides of the same coin, you and he: he cannot escape you forever. Bucky runs. Steve follows. ✦ measured my life in cooking lessons by FoxGlade, steve/bucky + clint + avengers, fluff, the winter soldier spoilers, 4k He knocks on Clint’s door, sharp and loud, and half a minute later Clint is standing there in boxers and a baggy Army Rangers shirt. “Morning,” Steve says shortly, before Clint can say anything. “You up to teaching me how to make those French toasts? I think I need to talk.” Clint yawns and stretches. Something in his back makes a loud cracking sound and Steve winces. “Yeah, I’m up,” he mumbles, then squints. “This is going to be a long cooking lesson, isn’t it?” “I found Bucky sitting outside the tower on the street when I went out for a jog and he remembered me but I’m pretty sure that’s all he remembers.” Clint just waves a hand and heads for the kitchen, Steve shuffling in his wake.
✦ and we are finally home by lastembers, sam & bucky + steve/bucky + sam/natasha, 7.3k The Winter Soldier shows up in Sam’s kitchen, one morning. He deals with it. (Natasha helps. Steve would, if they let him.) ✦ Circling Back by chaya, steve/bucky + sam + natasha + tony, the winter soldier spoilers, 59.6k Steve looks for Bucky, Bucky finds Steve, Steve tries desperately to put Bucky back together. Bucky tries desperately to let him. ✦ your favorite ghost by augustbird, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 21k It’s harder than Steve ever expected to bring Bucky home. ✦ Green-Eyed Monster by storiesfortravellers, steve/bucky + steve & tony + steve & sam + bucky & natasha, humor, 1.9k The Winter Soldier has joined the team and is slowly recovering, but he goes into a jealous rage whenever he sees that Steve is close friends with Tony, Sam, or Natasha. Past Steve/Bucky. ✦ Castor and Pollux by StringTheori, howard stark & steve + steve/bucky, mild the winter soldier spoilers, 2.9k A fic where Howard is emotionally constipated, a terrible human being, catches someone doing something, and brushes off friendships because he can. ✦ Find My Way by Brenda, steve/bucky + oc pov, the winter soldier spoilers, 4.6k Well, someone had to write the post-Winter Soldier fic where Bucky gets a decent meal and some homemade apple pie, right?
✦ Parallel Constructions by freshbakedlady, steve/bucky + sam + natasha, the winter soldier spoilers, 13.6k In the absence of orders, the man wearing the face of Bucky Barnes must figure out who he will be. The answer, mostly, is “somebody Steve Rogers can love.” Nothing so easy should ever take this much work. ✦ five people bucky barnes never was. by rhllors, steve/bucky + bucky/natasha, the winter soldier spoilers, 1.9k Five lives that never came to pass. ✦ no heart to recall by KiaraSayre, steve/bucky & sam & natasha & tony, the winter soldier spoilers, 15.3k He’s been in Steve Rogers’s company for less than twenty-four hours and he’s already losing sight of his mission. ✦ Bring Us Back a Souvenir by newredshoes, steve/bucky & sam & bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 1.5k Even with all his hair hacked off, he doesn’t look like a Bucky, Sam thinks. Maybe as some sort of stupid joke, like naming your most vicious dog Sweetpea. Steve’s told him the stories, and he’s seen the old newsreels; he knows what this Barnes guy used to be like. But it’s not like knowing what to look for is going to magically make some spark rise to the top. This isn’t an excavation. ✦ i will be your ground by misprinting, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 4.7k A character study. The subject: Bucky’s hair. (Also, a Bucky comes in from the cold fic.) ✦ Debts by vestigialwords, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, ~1k Steve’s life is a collection of debts, and the balance does not work out in his favor. ✦ Five times Steve kissed Bucky by paragon, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 16.5k (+ once, finally, it was the other way around) ✦ Run Until the Road Runs Out by ignipes, steve/bucky + sam & bucky + natasha, the winter soldier spoilers, 5.2k Sam’s along for this ride because he’s not about to let Steve Rogers go it alone, but Steve’s not the only one who needs a friend.
✦ And you that shall cross from shore to shore years hence, are more to me by ifeelbetter, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 4.4k The Captain woke quickly and tested the chain before he saw the Soldier. All the tension in his body evaporated once he met the Soldier’s eyes and he slumped downward, back up against the wall. “Oh, thank god,” he said. He repeated it twice, quiet. Like a secret. ✦ Your Mind Rings by Amberly, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 1.2k You aren’t Bucky. You’re not the Winter Soldier anymore, either, but you’re not Bucky ✦ tabula rasa by dance_at_bougival, steve/bucky + natasha + sam, the winter soldier spoilers, 10.3k Bucky Barnes screamed himself hoarse on that table and screamed falling off that train. He screamed when they programmed him and screamed and screamed until he isn’t Bucky Barnes anymore, not really. He is still screaming, a trapped rat running around a labyrinthine machine, clawing at the doors and running into dead ends. He has been screaming for seventy years. ✦ The Age’s Most Uncertain Hour by dewinter, steve/bucky + peggy, the winter soldier spoilers, 1.8k Five times the Winter Soldier remembered (and then forgot). ✦ The Steven G. Rogers Guide to What You Missed the Last Few Years by what_alchemy, steve/bucky, humor, 5.1k Steve’s got the hang of this 21st century thing. ✦ All the First Times by Vera (Vera_DragonMuse), steve/bucky + other marvel characters, the winter soldier spoilers, 9.6k Bucky starts over and finds new ways to survive. ✦ Me Against Your Memory (It’s a Two-Step Recovery Process) by thisiswhatthewatergaveme, steve/bucky + steve & natasha + steve & sam + natasha & sam, the winter soldier spoilers, 56.5k wip The Soldier needs answers. It’s the only mission he has left. And the mission is all he has.
✦ Make It Up as We Go Along by hannahrhen, steve/bucky + natasha + sam, mildly nsfw, the winter soldier spoilers, 1.6k Steve’s a terrible liar when he opens his mouth. ✦ What’s in a name by Ark, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 3.4k Steve doesn’t resist. He is dipped back: a dance. “Bucky,” says Steve. The severely serene surface does not stir. “You will answer the questions I ask.” The Soldier’s voice is Bucky’s but the accent is all wrong. His face is Bucky’s, perfect, and all wrong. ✦ Drawn From Life by littlerhymes, steve/bucky, the winter soldier spoilers, 2.5k “I remember,” Bucky says, but that’s not entirely true. Set after The Winter Soldier.
STEVE/BUCKY - POST-INFINITY WAR: ✦ Coming Back by Emotionallyunstabl, entire cast (some steve/bucky), infinity war spoilers, 1.9k    Fixing Avengers: Infinity War. ✦ How ya been, Buck? by dvorahbee, steve/bucky, NSFW, infinity war spoilers, 2.3k    A fix-it for Bucky and Steve’s reunion because I wasn’t too happy with that half-assed reunion we had. ✦ hold some dirt with those hands by magdaliny, steve/bucky & cast, infinity war spoilers, 3k    It had sent him to his knees. ✦ To Never Have Loved At All by hitlikehammers, steve/bucky & cast, infinity war spoilers, 2.8k    Steve will say they had work to do, and a universe to put to rights. They had people to find and hearts to unbreak. They had a mission. There was no time for any of them to mourn. Steve, as it turns out, says a lot of things that are mostly bullshit.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE&BUCKY GEN FIC RECS: ✦ This, You Protect by owlet, steve & bucky & everyone else, humor, 64.3k The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect ✦ By Choice or By Habit by Sholio, steve & bucky & natasha & clint & tony, 6.4k He is useful. He holds onto that. He is useful and a useful tool will not be thrown away. (For illumynare’s request: How about something with Bucky realizing the Avengers actually think of him as a person? And off I went to the utterly shameless h/c place.) ✦ 5 (+1) Times Bucky Was Already a Supersoldier by chaya, steve & bucky, 1k Erskine made it plain for Steve - the serum makes you stronger, faster, harder to kill, and it amplifies your existing qualities. Barnes, though, didn’t get any such heads up. ✦ Thaw by danveresque, steve & bucky & sam & natasha, 7.5k The Winter Soldier tries to find Bucky Barnes. ✦ Brothers In Arms by copperbadge, steve & bucky & sam & sam & tony & pepper & clint + background tony/pepper, 11.4k Bucky Barnes gets a tune-up, a new pet, and a home. ✦ You Know How I Feel, aka, The Adventures of Bucky and Muffy the Dinosaur by ifeelbetter, bucky & avengers, fluff, 4.5k Bucky saved a tiny dinosaur and took her home to Avengers Tower and on the way remembered how to laugh and sleep in soft beds. ✦ Strawberries in Wintertime by Sholio, steve & bucky & sam & natasha & sharon, 3.2k Or, how Sam’s apartment turns into a hangout for superheroes, spies, and rogue assassins. ✦ This Lonely Hour Before Daybreak by cheesethesecond, steve & bucky + sam + natasha, 2.9k Steve knew there would be good days and bad days. That’s how this sort of thing worked. Except sometimes, the bad days go like this.
✦ Almond, Clavicle, Orchid by kvikindi, steve & bucky & sam & natasha, 4.5k You say, “I don’t know what I am.” “It’s okay not to know,” Steve tells you. His face is very careful. But you know. You know that it’s not okay. ✦ you can’t fly on dinosaurs, bucky by scorpionbythesea, steve & bucky & clint, humor, 1.2k Based off the tumblr post by embracingthemadness and the tag that followed: steve and bucky making up random stories from their past and convincing the other avengers that it actually happened (◡‿◡✿) #there’s no way you guys fought nazi dinosaurs ✦ Fly on the Wings of Love by Omnicat, steve & bucky & sam & natasha & tony & clint + some background pairings, domesticity, 13.2k The Wings: Bucky just wants to show his appreciation for everything Sam has done for Steve. Of course, Tony Stark’s middle name is ‘needlessly difficult’. The Love: Bucky tries to set Natasha up with Sam. He’s a bit late for that party, but he managed to find Steve’s shield and replace Sam’s wings: he’ll come up with something for her. ✦ Swap by sparkles_stars, steve & bucky + avengers, body swap, 1.2k Steve and Bucky switch bodies. Nothing of substance happens from that moment on. ✦ Escape by Sholio, steve & bucky, 2.4k Missing scene for Captain America: The First Avenger – freeing the prisoners was just the start of getting away. ✦ think of it as personality dialysis by KiaraSayre, bucky & darcy, humor, 1.4k “I strangled someone with a shoelace once,” Barnes says. “Does that count as expressing myself through clothes?” “Uh, no.”
✦ Name, Rank, and Serial Number by forthegreatergood, steve & bucky + other marvel characters, 1.5k A Nazi peeling off his skin and declaring himself beyond human doesn’t even get a rise out of him anymore, but Bucky doesn’t think he could stand it if Steve ripped off his face, too. ✦ The Dawn of That Last Great Day by ignipes, steve & bucky + avengers + minor pairing references, the winter soldier speculation fic, 13.8k The Winter Soldier has a mission: kill Captain America. ✦ All The Leaves Are Brown (And the sky is gray) by AvocadoLove, bucky & tony + some tony/pepper + very mildly implied steve/bucky, 17.4k The Winter Soldier's mission is nearly complete. Howard and Maria Stark are dead, leaving him to dispatch their four-year-old child. One quick twist of the neck is all it will take, but the Soldier finds he cannot do it. So instead of killing Tony Stark, the Winter Soldier takes him away to raise as his own.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE&BUCKY&CAST - POST-THE WINTER SOLDIER: ✦ so this is how it is by sciencemyfiction, steve & bucky & sam, the winter soldier spoilers, ptsd, 29.1k Following the events of the Winter Soldier film, Steve and Sam finally find Bucky, and work to get back to a good place. ✦ On Your Left by TravelingRoses, steve & bucky & natasha & sam & tony thor & fury peggy, the winter soldier spoilers, 12.9k Five times someone told Steve to give up looking for Bucky and two times someone didn’t. Set after Winter Soldier; spoilers. ✦ Glass of Milk by Lauralot, bucky & avengers, the winter soldier spoilers, 6.6k In which in the Winter Soldier is in the care of the Avengers. He has yet to regain his memories, but he has developed a fondness for dairy products.

So, according to AO3, Damian is the least-represented bat-kid.
(Seriously, if you search the tags Dick Grayson-centric, Jason Todd-centric, Tim Drake-centric, and Damian Wayne-centric, guess who has the least number of fics written from their point of view?)
But here's the thing: obviously, if you're searching for Batfam-centric fics, you're coming for the angst and the hurt-comfort content. So my question is, why the hell aren't there more Damian-centric fics?
The potential for angst is unparalleled. Dude spent years being an only child and then suddenly woke up one day with three badass and incredibly competent older brothers. You're delusional if you think that type of scenario doesn't result in some form of insecurity or imposter syndrome.
Plus, as someone who's adopted, I know for a fact that some type of "I love all of you equally" conversation would have to take place. You just can't not acknowledge it. So maybe Damian feels pressure to be the best or be Bruce's favorite because he's the biological kid. Or maybe it's the others who assume that Damian thinks he's superior, when in reality he thinks nothing of the sort (I don't usually like the miscommunication trope, but I think it has a lot of potential in the context of one Damian Wayne).
And honestly, just the whole re-learning how to be a kid would be a lot. (For Marvel fans, think Natasha leaving the Red room or Bucky escaping from Hydra). He's been trapped in a toxic environment where he was brought up to have the same extreme and unforgiving beliefs as the people around him, and now he has to essentially rewire his brain, and the poor kid is what, freshly thirteen?
Anyway, long story short, I want more Damian content.

Steve-Centric Stucky Fics: 5 Recs + 1 TBR
Tumblr media
As promised, here is the rec list for Steve/Bucky fics with a focus on Steve-centric stories—all of them not EG-compliant, as requested. It's not quite as long as my usual rec lists for two reasons:
(1) I'm still sick and I can barely sit up straight, so please forgive the brevity of the list, and
(2) I deliberately wanted to include exclusively fics that were written in 2022 and 2023 to shine a spotlight on a few of the many wonderful writers and artists who are still creating absolutely fantastic works for the Stucky ship and who deserve to be read just as widely and passionately as older works in the fandom. Recency bias, but make it positive!
So without further ado, here are five Steve-centric Stucky recs and one more fic that I can't wait to get to:
1. say it soft and it's almost like praying by Somanywords | 41K, M
Author's summary: Natasha says, “Look, whatever the truth is about you, we have no way of really knowing the Winter Soldier's intentions. He’s not all there, he’s not who you remember. He’s a hot mess, Steve.”
“Why does everyone think that?” Steve says, and he’s nearly yelling, but not quite, because he doesn’t need to, not when they’re so close. “Why does everyone keep saying he’s a mess—have you seen me?"
Post-CA:TWS canon divergent. I literally finished this fic about 15 minutes ago, so I haven't even left a comment yet. I'm still processing, you could say. The author tagged this with "just another post catws fic (but by me)"—and yes, that's what you get. All the usual ingredients are here, but the joy of TWS canon divergence is of course in the endless possibilities of how these well-known ingredients are used, re-arranged, and re-imagined as something new, exciting, and often much more satisfying than in canon. This fic excels at all three and is an absolute joy from start to finish.
2. Daybreak by BonkyBornes, art by PottersPink | 9K, NR
Author's summary: They called it project Rebirth because the person was supposed to be reborn, like a phoenix from the ashes. Steve was supposed to be the phoenix. He was supposed to rise from the ashes of his old body, he was supposed to leave behind his deafness and his limp and the scoliosis that bent his entire body to the left. He was supposed to leave behind everything that held him back.
In the end, the only thing that left was the only thing that mattered.
Shrinkyclinks canon-divergent AU. What if Project Rebirth didn't go right...but it didn't go entirely wrong either? A story about ghosts but not a ghost story. Or maybe something else entirely? Steve fights his body and time and the memories that keep haunting him. Beautifully written, with gorgeous art by PottersPink that perfectly complements the story.
3. Exhale by seapigeon, art by dudewhereismypie | 15K, M
Author's summary: After the Chitauri invasion, Steve parts ways with SHIELD, unsure if he can trust an agency that tried to deceive him and built weapons from the Tesseract.
He finds himself alone in an unfamiliar future, penniless, not even legally alive. Fortunately, he knows how to survive. Steve Rogers is used to getting by on his own.
The thing is, he doesn't have to.
Shrunkyclunks. Post-Avengers canon divergent. A fic that asks the question: What if, after the battle of New York, Steve had told SHIELD a polite but firm 'No'? Follow him as he strikes out on his own, finds an apartment, a job, and friends, figures out life in the 21st century...and of course falls in love!
4. Preberseeschießen by Ginny_Potter | 6K, T
Author's summary: Bucky breathes out and shoots. The bullet hits water… and there it is, the zapping sound of paper tearing.
The light turns on and off three times. Third circle. Just a lick out of bullseye. The Howlies explode in cheers.
Or, the Howling Commandos play a shooting game with the Austrian Resistance and Steve has lots of unresolved feelings about himself, his new body, and his changing relationship with Bucky. In other words, comrades are comrades, angst looms, and Steve feels.
Wartime fic. Would you like to read some excellent gay angst full of yearning and unresolved tension, peppered with interesting and wonderfully specific historical details and Howlies camaraderie? Would you like to get your heart crushed a little? Yes? Here you go. And if this makes you feel too sad by the end of it and you crave a bit of a happier resolution, just jump straight into a fistfull of dollars (5K, E) by the same author, which is not intended as a companion piece or even set in the same universe, but it works just as if it were. (Look at me sneaking in extra recs.)
5. Not In The Answer But The Question by aimmyarrowshigh, art by PottersPink | 27K, T
Author's summary: It rankles that his drink was made before he even got a chance to order it. What if he wanted a change? What if he were adventurous and bold? What if he tried something new?
---
Or, Steve Rogers shakes up his gray daily routine in 2014 by going back home to Vinegar Hill. To his surprise, the Jewish deli he used to frequent with Arnie is still standing.
And Steve's whole life changes again.
Shrunkyclunks. Post-Avengers canon divergent. A lost and lonely Steve tries to figure out who he was, is and most importantly, wants to be in this new century he's found himself in that is both terrifying and full of possibilities. Told in vignettes (I did not count, but I believe all of them are exactly 100 word drabbles) that perfectly illustrate the fragmented mind and life of its protagonist and his experience of constantly shifting and adjusting between past and present. A story about identity, memory, self-acceptance, and finding the courage to love and let yourself be loved. And food. So much amazing food!
+ 1 TBR: Operation: Gros Michel by SquadOfCats | 358K, E
Author's summary: “It starts with bananas. Of course, it's not really about the bananas. Just like a camel isn't bothered by one single straw, just like a dam doesn't break because of one extra drop. Obviously, Steve's mental breakdown isn't about bananas.”
Steve is overwhelmed and hanging by a thread, doing his best to take care of Bucky while still deeply traumatized himself. He finally has a breakdown over the stupidest of things: bananas. So Bucky takes care of him.
In which Steve learns to surf, Bucky becomes a gardener, and they both begin to heal.
Post-CA:TWS canon divergent. No, I did not make a mistake, the word count for this story really does come in at an impressive (or intimidating, you decide) 358,225 words! Which is the only reason why I haven't read it yet. I do want to make time for this asap because the snippets I've read so far were very intriguing and everything I've heard about it from people who have finished it, sounds absolutely amazing. So, this is the wild card pick!
Happy reading! <3

I have a request where Bucky, Nat, Steve and reader are on a mission. Bucky and reader are dating and he's very possessive. Somehow, all of them end up having a foursome (reader centric) but Bucky's possessiveness can still be seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steve x Nat, Bucky x reader
Bucky and Steve dom, nat and reader submissive
You walked out of the hotel’s bathroom wearing a short dress. You and the others were meant to go to a club that night to have drinks and unwind. And Bucky had bought you a new dress.
Unknown to him, you also wore a new set of lingerie that Natasha had helped you pick out. The baby blue lace hugged all of your curves and you couldn’t wait for Bucky to see it later.
You wandered out of the bathroom to find Bucky sitting on the bed. He raised his eyebrows in surprise when he saw the short dress you wore.
He smirked a little as he stood up. “Looking good baby”
You giggled as he walked closer to you. He snaked one of his arms around your waist and pulled you towards him.
He playfully nipped at your ear. “I don’t know if I want anyone else seeing you in this. It’s awfully short, but oh so sexy”
One of Bucky’s hands trailed up your side until he was squeezing your boob in his hand. He gently played with your boobs earning a soft moan.
He chuckled at this. “Oh baby girl, we might not even make it out tonight.”
Bucky gave you a wink as he pushed you down onto the mattress. He tugged off your dress leaving you in your lingerie.
His eyes widened in surprise. “Wow baby, all for me?” He teased.
He traced the lace that covered your hips. In one swift motion he pulled off his shirt. His biceps flexed softly as he undid his zipper.
Just as he was about to take off his boxers the door opened to reveal Steve and Natasha.
Steve looked at the sight in front of him with surprise. Natasha only blushed as she buried her face into Steve’s arm.
You saw a switch in Bucky’s eyes. He stood up straighter and seemed to puff his chest out in an almost protective way.
“What ya looking at Rogers?” He challenged.
Bucky crossed his arms as he awaited Steve’s response.
Steve’s surprise faded to reveal a soft smirk. “Just coming to get the two love birds, but it seems you two are busy”
Bucky only scoffed “shut it Rogers”
Steve raised an eyebrow “who knows I might blow off tonight as well. Maybe we could have some fun?”
Bucky’s scowl turned into a smirk as he invited Steve and Natasha in. “Be my guest”
You felt the cool air hit your core as Bucky pulled down your panties. Your throbbing core was being presented as you laid on your back.
You felt Bucky’s hands go up and pull off your bra, discarding it somewhere behind him. He only chuckled as he saw you shiver.
“My baby girl looks so pretty.” His voice was seductive.
Beside you was Natasha, also on her back. Her clothes being completely discarded in a pile behind Steve.
Natasha’s hair was spread out below her as her head was thrown back. Her face was flushed as Steve fingered her.
You could hear the wet sounds of Steve’s fingers thrusting in and out of Natasha’s hole. Natasha grabbed your hand and intertwined your fingers together.A pretty moan left her lips as Steve fingered her.
A gasp left your lips as you felt one of Bucky’s fingers push into your core. He curled it massaging the spongey walls inside. Your eyes began to role back as he added a second finger.
Bucky smirked down at you “do you like this? Being stretched out with your bestie?”
You nodded your head and gave a pathetic moan which caused Steve to laugh.
Steve took out his cock and began to pump himself with one hand, his other hand continued to run through Natasha’s folds.
Bucky also began to pump himself. He looked down at you and winked. “Does My baby girl want to stay like this, and continue to hold Natty’s hand? Or does she want to do something more exciting?”
You looked at him with confusion. “The second one I guess…”
Bucky only smirked as he pulled you closer to him. He picked you up and flipped you so you would be on your stomach. He began to massage your bum.
“On your hands and knees baby”
You did as he said, your soaking cunt being presented to bucky. You noticed some movements to your side and turned your head to see Steve getting Natasha in the same position.
The only difference being that she faced you. You felt Bucky’s cock slowly push inside you. His member filling you perfectly. He began to thrust his hips. Making you moan.
You saw Natasha’s eyes roll back as Steve began to fuck her as well.
You saw Steve look down at you with hungry eyes and then up to bucky. You heard Bucky making a go ahead sound.
You felt Bucky’s hand go into your hair pulling your head up. You saw Steve do a similar thing to Natasha.
And then they pushed your heads forward.
You felt Natasha’s mouth against yours, both of you being thrusted into. You felt Natasha’s lips on yours.
You began to moan louder as Bucky quickened his pace. His hips bucking into yours.
Natasha’s head was pushed further into yours. You could feel her tongue on your lips.
When Bucky began to circle your asshole with his other hand you opened your lips in a muffled moan. The sound being swallowed by Natasha.
She looked at you with sensual eyes as she began to shove her tongue into your mouth. Her tongue twirled inside your mouth. Her kisses becoming more wet and sexy each time you guys were pushed together.
You heard Bucky chuckle behind you as he fucked you from behind. “You look so hot babe”
You only moaned as he continued to thrust, feeling Natasha suck your tongue.
Your eyes rolled back as a feeling of ecstasy overcame you. You would definitely be doing this again.

Black Widow Fest - Day Five
Wild Geese (cruelty is easy)
Warnings: death of widows, implied (not graphic) torture, Natasha in the Red Room.
Word Count: 2154
Pairing: Black Widows, Widows, Natasha-centric (Clint/Nat implied)
Tumblr media
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. - Mary Oliver. Wild Geese.
Head warnings. This is not a happy fic, words in their essence are something that can be so benign but can have ripple effects. Words said in grief, anger, pain, can have lasting impacts in ways we don’t know. Be careful with your words, you’ll never know how they may ricochet. Take care friends. <3
Cruelty is easy. You’re not special for choosing it.
1/
Chains around her wrists, toes barely touching the floor, the woman spits at the Widow.
“Why do you hold your secrets, when you could so easily just tell me? Where is your husband?”
Blood on her chin, still the woman snarls.
Like a rabid dog, she drools and snaps when the Widow comes close.
“You’re going to die here anyway, why not make your last hours easier?”
The woman, dehydrated, delirious, laughs.
“Cruelty is easy. You’re not special for choosing it.”
It give the widow pause.
The woman laughs again.
“You’re not special at all. Just a cog in the machine. Doing someone else’s bidding. How does it feel to be the puppet?”
She sighs, spits, and leans heavily on the chains.
“So kill me, because I don’t know what you want to hear. My husband is nowhere. He’s everywhere. He’s in Malta, Dubrovnik. He’s in the Maldives, in Sri Lanka or…”
The gun shot to her head silences her and the body falls heavily against the chains, it’s weight now dead as there’s steady blood flow from the the wound.
.
2/
Natasha watches the older widow as she instructs the anatomy class.
Blood flow, large veins, nerves. It’s fascinating the way that the human body works. Out of all the things that Natasha learns, she finds this the most interesting.
The Red Room teaches them these things for the use of information extraction, for field medicine and to show them that they are not immortal.
Even though they think that they are.
They’re drilled daily, and it becomes Natasha’s favourite.
The older widow seems to see it, her love of learning and how she absorbs the information.
After class, she asks the Widow to teach her about cranial nerves, how they can bring pain. How it can impact on thinking.
The widow pauses and takes Natasha’s hand.
Touch is always a strange sensation.
She craves it and strays away from it.
This time, the touch is insistent.
The words are said urgently, whispered as though a secret in shame.
“Cruelty is easy, Natasha. You are not special for choosing it. Kindness, grace and patience, sometimes those are things that matter more in the moment.”
Abruptly, she lets her hand go, and stands.
“We will learn more on the cranial nerves over the next week.”
She hands Natasha a book.
“Read this. And write me a essay on how you would provide the field medicine in case study, 600 words by tomorrow.”
The book is heavy, but it’s the words that were spoken in secret that run in repetition in Natasha’s head.
‘Cruelty is easy.”
She wonders if it’s a challenge, if she’s suppose to learn to extract information in other ways. Through words rather than pain.
She walks out of the room, wondering just how that would work.
.
3/
Georgia stares at Natasha.
“So what, like the whores of Odessa, you want to go in me what? Ask them for the information?”
Natasha feels the fear flow through her.
She stands straighter, hardens her face and nods.
“They’re going to invite us in graciously. They’re going to tell us everything we want to know and we’ll be done in less than 2 hours.”
She pauses.
“Unless you want to follow the mission parameter, take the man and his daughter and torture them both to see who breaks first.”
She knows Georgia is not smart enough to understand what she is going for. That she can show them that she can do things in a creative way.
She doesn’t like torture. It’s messy and gives her a feeling in her gut that doesn’t go away for days. The images replay in her mind.
But she can’t tell anyone that.
Georgia shrugs.
“Okay. But if we die for this Natalia, I’m going to kill your in the afterlife.”
Natasha bristles at the nickname and passes an easy smile.
“I’ll get the blame, just follow my lead, okay?”
Natasha stands, folds money in her hand and smiles.
The door knock is met with a crack of an opening and a girl, no older than twelve peeks around the corner.
“Hello?”
“Hi hun, I’m Irina and this is Svetlana, we are here to see your mum, is she home?”
The girls eyes widen, and sadness fills them.
“Um. No, she’s not.”
Natasha knows well that the woman is dead.
“Oh, okay, can you leave a message for us?”
The door opens wider.
The girl more trusting now.
“My dadda’s home,” she starts, “I can get him, if you want?”
Natasha smiles, “oh sure, that would be great.”
The girl leaves them standing at the door and Georgia moves nervously from foot to foot.
“Are you sure about this, Natalia?”
Natasha reaches behind her and squeezes her hand in reassurance.
“Hello?”
The bearded man appears, his face drawn and tired.
“Hello!” Natasha says brightly.
“Alina gave us this address when we last met up, she said to come visit if ever we were in Vladivostok.”
The man frowns.
“We went to school together.”
Natasha is betting hard that the man will remember his wife’s ramblings of her childhood friends, but not their faces.
“Oh,” he nods.
“Irina and Svetlana,” the girl says, helpfully, as though she knows.
“Oh,” the man says again.
“She’s dead.”
The words are heavy and the girl retreats behind her father as if the words won’t find her there.
Natasha schools her face into one of grief, like the woman wasn’t killed at the hands of the KGB in partnership of the Red Room.
“Oh,” she echos, “how? When?”
The man opens the door wider, and invites them in.
The follow the couple into the kitchen, where the girl starts to make some tea, taking the role that her mother must have left.
The man sits, offering chairs to the Widows as they’re offered tea.
“It is perhaps a long story,” he opens, looking to his daughter.
Natasha is quick.
“And I want no pain in reopening a wound.”
She pauses.
“She was my friend. She was kind and honest and dear to us.”
She sighs dramatically, and rests her head in her hands, Georgia taking the cue to offer comfort.
“Is there anything we can do?”
The girl sets down the tea, and they wrap their hands around it.
She looks small amongst the big table, and squeaks a response.
“What was my mother like when she was young?”
Natasha lies with the truth.
The words woven and soon the man is drunk.
The little girl tired and secrets spilled without his knowledge.
They help the girl put her father to bed, and she gratefully thanks them, offering them her meagre stash of lollies.
Natasha declines, but Georgia takes four, then closes the girl’s hand around the rest.
“Thank you,” the little girl says, spontaneously hugging them both.
They hug her back, and leave the way they came, no one worse for the meeting.
“That was more exhausting, Nat.”
Georgia tells her, getting into their car.
“But no bad dreams,” Natasha sighs, leaning back.
Georgia snorts.
“No, no bad dreams.”
The getaway is smooth and smell of sweets emanate.
“Do you think they’ll punish us for going off mission?”
Natasha shakes her head.
“Given the information we just gathered, and the relationships we made, no, I don’t think they will.”
“You tell them then.”
“Mm,” Natasha nods, non committal to the instruction.
“Why?”
Georgia hands over two hard lollies and Natasha takes them both, wrapping them and revelling in the sweetness.
“Cruelty is easy, we aren’t special for choosing it.”
Georgia doesn’t say anything but seems to ruminate on her words.
“Where’d you learn that?”
“Madam Simzar,” Natasha chooses to disclose.
Georgia smiles.
“I miss her.”
Natasha ducks her head, unable to keep the pain off her face.
“Me too.”
.
4/
Natasha exits Fury’s office.
Making a bee line for the door, she brushes quickly past Clint and disappears.
Clearly not good news then.
He follows her to find her gone, disappeared in a matter of seconds.
He wonders where she could have gone, and walks quickly to the library hoping to catch a glimpse of her hair.
She’s not there, and she doesn’t appear to be anywhere. He swears under his breath before returning back to Fury’s office, hoping for some insight into what made her run.
He thought they might have been passed this, but, he supposes, Natasha’s go to self preservation will always be to hide her feelings, conceal her grief, hurt and sadness.
He feels that’s what this is, judging the way she wouldn’t even make eye contact as she brushed past.
“What happened?”
He’s not usually so abrupt with his boss, but he needs to know whether in this moment, Natasha needs help.
No time for pleasantries.
“A widow Natasha defected, overdosed.”
Fury’s words are flat.
The pictures he passes over shows the graphic image of a woman overdosed.
Clint feels sick.
The could be Natasha.
He knows at once where she’s gone, and leaves the room without another word.
.
The park is quiet.
Big dark clouds ruminate overhead, and he wraps his jacket around himself tighter against the cold.
The playground is dead, just as he assumed it would be, the children home and getting ready for night time routines.
He’s glad.
They used to come here and swing on the swings when Natasha needed to get away from herself. The rocking motion seemingly soothing.
Clint finds her exactly where he expects to.
The swing next to her inviting for him as he sits down and says nothing.
They stay in stasis, swinging slowly.
“Her name was Georgia.”
Natasha rests her head on the swing lengths, and swallows.
She wants to tell him about her, but the grief is too much. A tear slips out, and she hastily wipes it away.
“Cruelty to yourself is easy, Clint,” she says tiredly.
Clint looks at her, really looks and notices the slip of blood in her hand, clutching the small pairing knife.
“I’m not special for choosing it,” the words said in a whisper.
She hands him the knife, unwrapping her hand from around it.
“It’s harder to be kind.”
He pauses, the knife gone as soon as he touches it.
“I’ve heard you say it before.”
He didn’t feel how dangerous losing a widow might be for her. Certainly didn’t expect the knife.
He wants to know how safe she is, how she won’t be the dead girl, overdosed.
“Is it a reminder?”
She looks at him, shrugs, nods.
“Cruelty is easy,” she whispers.
Natasha pauses at the statement, aware she’s just repeating herself, the words though; they seem important.
The mission they went on, replaying in her mind, with Georgia smiling in the car.
“Georgia was a friend,” she looks to Clint. “One of a select few, and her passing feels personal.”
“She was a widow?”
Clint knows but asks anyway.
“Yes.”
Natasha starts swinging, slow movements, dragging her feet on the ground.
“Was she…”
Clint doesn’t really know what he’s asking.
“Free?”
She finishes the thought anyway.
“Yes. No. Are any of us ever free of that place?”
Clint doesn’t know how to answer.
“Drugs.”
Natasha pauses.
“She wasn’t kind to herself.”
“She felt the need to be cruel.”
Clint starts swinging too, feeling the heaviness of the night pressing down. He wonders just how much and how close Natasha was to this girl when they were young.
“To herself?” he wonders.
“Yes.”
She’s hastily wipes at her face again.
“But you aren’t.”
He says it as a statement and hopes that it’s true.
“Sometimes I am.”
Natasha pauses. Thinks.
“I beat myself up with my thoughts. But I’m better at recognising it. Stopping it when it comes.”
The introspection is not lost on Clint. It’s taken years for them both to realize when their thinking patterns have not been… optimal.
“She was not.”
He cringes at the past tense, the death fresh.
“No.”
She drags her feet.
“She was not.”
Clint’s not really sure what to say. He wants to hug her but knows it’s not appropriate.
“I’m sorry she let you down,” he opts for, pushing back and forward on his toes.
Natasha shrugs, slowing her movements.
“She didn’t let me down, her actions have nothing to do with me.”
There’s a pause, as Clint is at a loss for words, not used to Natasha’s nonchalance at the death of her friend, or wonders if she’s just masking her grief.
“It’s a reminder,” she continues.
“I choose to be kind.”
She says it with a strength, even as her voice wobbles.
“Cruelty is easy, to others, to yourself.”
Clint nods, pushes off a little more heavily.
“Yeah. It is,” he agrees.
He slows with his feet and then repeats the process.
“You are kind, Natasha,” he tells her.
But it’s met with silence as night covers them in darkness.

from the sidelines
⌦ .。.:*♡
characters: natasha romanoff, wanda maximoff (wandanat)
genre: fluff, slight angst
warnings: swearing, mentions of blood & guns, breakdowns/crying
summary: When Wanda comes into Natasha’s life, she gives the widow something to lose.
word count: 3,859
a/n: this is my first time writing for nat/something nat-centric and, technically, wandanat too! this was inspired by sidelines by phoebe bridgers because i think that song is suuuuper underappreciated and that it was a good fit for them (lyrics are in bold and italics). it’s been a while since i last wrote anything for fun and not for uni, so please be kind. i also don’t know much about gardening so some of the language might not be accurate. you can read it on ao3 (here) or under the cut. i hope you enjoy :>
I’m not afraid of anything at all
If there was one thing constant about Natasha, it was the lack of fear. It wasn’t inherent, but was a habit developed essential for her survival. She learned that pretty quickly. One moment of hesitance, no matter how short, could mean life or death.
There were other times she felt brave without risking her life though. Like when she first dyed her hair. She chose the color blue because it reminded her of the sky. The horizon always looked limitless, a reminder that there could be more to life than what she had already experienced. She remembers making that choice and following through with it. It made her feel in control of something, amidst all the other things she had no power over.

‘Cause nothing ever shakes me, nothing makes me cry
Not a plane going down in the ocean and drowning
One of her most vivid memories is flying the plane with Melina. The night was normal at first. She was playing tag with her younger sister until she fell and hurt her knee. Then, they watched the fireflies and went inside to help with dinner. Alexei arrived and they started eating. It all felt so nice, so normal until he said they were going on a big adventure. Her appetite disappeared. Yelena was excited, oblivious to what it actually meant. She didn’t have the heart or the chance to tell her.
The drive out was tense and quiet, save for American Pie playing in the background. She watched the scenes change outside her window from the suburbs to highways. They had to move fast, but she felt sluggish, overwhelmed with everything going on. She remembers holding on to a photobooth strip of her and Yelena before finally running to get on the plane after being urged by Alexei. The sound of sirens and the whirring of engines, her heartbeat hammering in her chest, filled her ears. Gunshots started sounding off. One hit Melina’s shoulder.
“I need you up here,” She said through gritted teeth. Natasha clambered beside her.
She was wincing in pain while giving instructions to pull right.
“Mom, you’ve got blood on you,” Her voice came out strangled, and that tight feeling came along with tears forming in her eyes. She didn’t cry often but she knew she hated the physiological sensations that came with it.
“It’s okay, baby.” Two more cars directly in front of them appeared in the distance. “Hit the accelerator there.”
She did as she was told, speeding the plane up. She faltered when a few more shots were fired at them.
“Hold it steady, hold it steady.” More shots, the headlights ahead were blindingly bright. “You’re gonna pull back at 55 knots.” They started counting in unison. Alexei popped one of the cars’ tires with a bullet, causing them to crash into each other.
“Pull back, you can do it! Pull back, all your strength...” Part of the plane grazes with the bottom of the now-upturned car. But they were finally off the ground. Flying. A sense of relief washes over her.
Considering the past few hours, the rest of the flight went smoothly. They landed somewhere remote, it felt like the middle of nowhere. Alexei carried Melina to a stretcher held by some soldiers she and Yelena ran after. After a short exchange of words with the older woman, she remembers wrangling a gun from someone, unwanted tears threatening to fall from her eyes again, and Yelena’s small form hiding behind her.
“I don’t wanna go back there.”
A needle was buried deep into her neck. She was then thrown into a shipping container with other girls. Masked people were pointing rifles at them, shouting and violently wrenching Yelena from her hold. There was a man, he knelt to meet her eyes. Rough and calloused hands held her face.
“The Red Room is your home now.”
───── ⴵ⋅ᗢ⋅ⴵ ─────
Watched the world from the sidelines
Had nothing to prove
Natasha had just started getting used to being “normal,” just another child in midwestern America. She was going to school, being around other kids, having a family until it was all ripped away. Even though it was all a lie, she couldn’t say it wasn’t important to her.
Being back in the Red Room was a regimented, isolating existence. No one was able to speak to each other for long. Schedules were planned down to the minute. Excruciating physical training, including hand-to-hand combat, ballet, acrobatics, and weapons training, pushed them to their limits, sometimes even beyond.
The mutilation, both psychological and physical, was the worst of all. They broke down each girl’s hope and willpower if any were even left. They were treated like objects, mere faceless weapons they could manipulate as a means to an evil end. The ones who survived were considered lucky, the prime of their batches, and given an operation. They called it “graduation,” but everyone knew what that meant.
At some point, she was able to get out. Her time with the KGB, then in S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers was filled with twists and turns. It was a lot of battles, moral disputes, and political agendas. There was even a time when she had to expose her own seedy past, much to her discomfort, but it was for the greater good. She didn’t mind as long as it was for the well-being of others.
───── ⴵ⋅ᗢ⋅ⴵ ─────
‘Til you came into my life
Gave me something to lose
Now that she thinks of it, the first time she interacted with Wanda was horrible. The witch inflicted a vision, memories that she was trying to bury and leave behind, when she was weakened and vulnerable. There were snippets of a conversation with Madame B. The graduation ceremony. It made her feel like a monster all over again.
The next time they interacted was in the Battle of Sokovia. She remembers regrouping with Steve, but not expecting the very same witch to make an appearance. Despite all the chaos, the jacket she wore looked familiar.
“Is that my jacket?” Natasha gestured at the younger woman, frowning slightly.
“She’s with us,” Steve said.
“That still doesn’t explain the jacket.”
Natasha was persistent. She didn’t shop for clothes often, never dressing up unless she wanted or had to, so this red jacket was special. It was one of the first few things she bought for herself. Wanda, now awkward and unsure of what to do, ran off. The rest of the battle felt like a blur of robots and rubble.
Since then, Wanda joined the Avengers. The younger woman mostly kept to herself when not on missions, watching sitcoms in her room. Vision would talk to her sometimes. Other times, the widow herself would do so. Natasha understood she needed space and time to cope with everything she’d been through but didn’t want to leave her fully isolated.
Their conversations, if you could even call them that, were awkward at first. Natasha would ramble on about whatever, trying to fill the silence.
“There’s breakfast in the kitchen.”
Wanda looks up from her book only to be met with a small, warm smile on the assassin’s face.
“It’s the usual American stuff. Eggs, bacon, sugary cereal, some fruit. Pretty sure Clint’s making waffles too,” Natasha points to the door with her thumb. “You should eat with us. Bond with the team, all that stuff that Steve goes on about. We’ll have training after.”
Wanda hums in contemplation. Then, she nods. It’s the slightest motion that one would miss if they didn’t pay enough attention. Natasha nods back and turns to leave the room. The witch’s voice catches her off-guard, though.
“I’ll come with you.”
It’s raspy in the best way possible, with a hint of her Sokovian accent lingering. It’s a sound that Natasha decides she would like to hear more often. Her smile grows ever so slightly as she gestures for her to walk together.
───
When Natasha started helping in Wanda’s hand-to-hand combat training, the two became closer literally and figuratively. In one memorable session, from when Wanda still wasn’t as skilled at combat as she is now, Natasha was able to pin her down. Her lithe fingers wrapped around the other woman’s wrists while she used her thighs to straddle. All to restrict movement, of course. The flustered expression on the witch’s face could not be more obvious.
Their sessions consisted of a warm-up, some rounds of sparring, and a cooldown. After barely surviving this particularly challenging one, Wanda lands on the bench with a sigh. “Fuck… You kicked my ass today, Tasha. No fair,” She says through heavy breaths, leaning back and wiping the sweat from her brow.
Natasha shrugs and smiles as she sits beside her, reaching for a bottle of water across from the younger woman. Her torso brushes with her thigh, making the Sokovian lose her breath all over again.
“Please. I went easy on you. Besides, it’s revenge for taking my jacket,” Natasha says as she sits back up and takes a sip of water.
Wanda stands on slightly wobbly legs while a breathy laugh escapes her lips. “You’re really still holding that grudge?” She raises her hands playfully, “In my defense, Steve threw it at me and told me to put it on. It was a hectic time, you know.”
Natasha smirks and shakes her head as they both move to gather their bags and leave. The assassin offers her hand.
“Let me carry your stuff. It’s the least I can do. Look, you can barely stand.”
“It’s okay, Tasha. I go—”
“Come on,” The widow urges. A knowing look is on her face.
Wanda’s face becomes flushed, more so than it already was. It looks like she hopes Natasha won’t notice, but she does anyway. She raises her eyebrow teasingly.
“Did the workout take you out that bad, Wands?”
The nickname doesn’t help at all. Wanda rolls her eyes playfully as she hands her duffel bag over. Natasha slings both bags over her shoulder and they start walking together.
“Remind me again why I have to keep doing the hand-to-hand stuff? I literally move things with my mind.”
“If you use your mind, why do you do the thing with your hands then?” Natasha tries to mimic the witch’s signature hand movements with her free hand. This earns her a lighthearted push.
“Oh, you know I’m just kidding. We both know you can’t just rely on your magic all the time. I want you to be able to fend for yourself if anything happens. Yeah?”
Wanda groans exaggeratedly, “Ugh. Okay, yes, you have a point.”
She chuckles at this. The pair, now embraced by a comfortable silence, walks to the elevator of the compound. As they enter, Natasha wraps her free arm around Wanda’s shoulder. She squeezes slightly, firm muscles under her touch, bringing her closer and looking into her eyes.
“Wanna have lunch with me today?”
Wanda raises her eyebrow, “Can we watch I Love Lucy while we eat?”
Natasha nods and hands over her bag. “Of course.”
They smile warmly at each other, parting ways to freshen up before meeting again later.
───
Natasha and Wanda have seen each other at different points in their lives. Happy, sad, and everything else in between. But the Lagos Incident was a whole other thing. Natasha herself was a witness to how Wanda had been doing so well before it. To watch the immense guilt, self-loathing, and depression come over the witch after the incident, after slowly building herself back up, was heartbreaking for the widow.
Old habits die hard. Wanda becomes a recluse again. However, instead of sitcoms accompanying her, it was the news. She couldn’t help but keep watching coverage of it as if being constantly reminded of this tragedy was helping anyone.
Steve already spoke with her, Natasha knows this, but she decides to give a different type of comfort to the person she’s grown to love. A silent one, one that speaks through actions.
On days Wanda doesn’t leave her room, Natasha knows she isn’t eating so she goes up and brings food. Nine times out of ten, it’s a peanut butter sandwich because it’s all she can make without setting the kitchen on fire. Ten times out of ten, it’s returned with just a few bites taken out. It doesn’t matter, Natasha is just happy to provide her with even the littlest bit of sustenance.
On nights Wanda can’t sleep, evident by the faint light escaping from her room, Natasha stays up with her. She takes it upon herself to change the channels on Wanda’s television or switch it off. She puts on some music instead, knowing that noise is a welcome distraction to her spiraling thoughts. Other times, Wanda motions for Natasha to her bed. The contact of skin on skin, the physical reminder that she isn’t alone helps Wanda relax even if it’s only for a few hours. Most nights, the feeling of Natasha’s body pressed up against Wanda’s is enough to lull her to sleep.
And when it’s not, when she falls into that spiral once more, Natasha’s always there to wipe away her tears and pull her out of it.
“So many people… All those lives lost because I-I couldn’t—” Wanda sobs, breaking down in the familiar hold of strong arms.
Natasha squeezes just a little bit tighter. She speaks softly, interrupting the younger woman, “I know, Wands. I know. But you have to stop blaming yourself, okay? We’ve all hurt people and we’ve all made mistakes. Even if we mean well. And you did mean well. It’s just sometimes things work out in ways we don’t anticipate.”
The consoling words fall on deaf ears. Wanda shakes her head and cries even harder while burying herself deeper into the embrace. Her voice is muffled, repeated pleas of repentance, “It’s my fault, it’s my fault, it’s all my fault… T-tasha, it’s all my fault…” Unsure what to say now, Natasha resorts to her instinct instead. It has never failed her. She starts to rock Wanda gently, pressing a soothing kiss to the top of the younger woman’s head. A quiet, melodic hum resonates from her lips. She continues until Wanda’s breathing evens out and until sleep takes over both of them.
───
A soft stream of sunlight seeps into the room, awakening the Russian. She looks down at the sleeping figure in her arms. Wanda looks so peaceful right now, Natasha thinks. She would do anything to conserve this moment, this feeling of serenity for her. To take away all her pain, heartache, and afflictions. Realistically, she knows she can’t accomplish that. The best she can do is just be there for her.
It’s been a few minutes since and she feels Wanda stir slightly, who immediately snuggles closer and remains asleep. A warm feeling settles in her body, first in her chest then it spreads all over. She recalls feeling this way many times before, but only ever with Wanda. It’s at this exact instance she finally fully realizes what this is.
I’m in love.
She bites her lip in contemplation, quiet realization, as Wanda’s eyes flutter open. Hazy green eyes look into clear ones and a mumbled phrase reaches her ears. “Your thoughts are getting loud, Tasha. Are you okay?”
Broken from her trance, she looks down at Wanda. “Yeah, I am. Um. I just… I have something to tell you.” She shifts to lean against the headboard. Now is as perfect a time as any, she thinks.
Wanda’s eyebrows stitch together in a frown as she rubs the sleep from her eyes. She sits up, mostly leaning her weight on the other woman, while trying to decipher the look on her face. The Russian waits for a sign of approval from the Sokovian. Wanda nods and hums.
“I’m going to be direct about this, Wands.”
She takes a deep breath in.
“I like that we’ve grown close, that we consider each other as friends. I like doing things for you and with you and I like helping you, giving you what I have. Time, insight, comfort, whatever. Watching sitcoms with you, sleeping next to you, and waking up in your bed. I like your voice and your ringed hands, how graceful they look when you use your powers. The way your nose scrunches up and your bunny teeth show when you smile. How your accent slips when you say certain words and how you say my name. The way you carry yourself. How you care so much about others… If you let me, I would care for you for the rest of time.”
Natasha finishes with a sharp exhale, only now realizing her rambling. Losing control was one of the things she never wanted to experience again, but this time was different. Finally letting these thoughts flow through and out of her felt cathartic.
Wanda’s voice is quiet, “You would?”
Natasha nods, “Always.”
She says it without hesitation. Because she is wholly certain that she has no other answer. Why would there be?
Wanda becomes silent. An unreadable expression appears on her face as she takes in Natasha’s words. Her posture straightens slightly. Tension is now in the air and a silence begins to settle.
Natasha screws her eyes shut, willing the tears in her eyes to stop forming. She was just about to take everything back, apologize for even saying anything, before getting interrupted. She feels slim fingers gently hold her face. Wanda strokes Natasha’s cheek, her thumb moving in slow, circular motions while she speaks.
“Tasha, hey, please don’t cry,” Wanda looks at her pleadingly, leaning in closer.
Natasha blinks rapidly, brows furrowing together. “I’m sorry. I got nervous because you weren’t saying anything and I… I don’t want to lose you.”
“You have nothing to apologize for. I just had to take a minute because I didn’t realize you felt this way. Trust you won’t lose me, please.” She looks away. Her touch slows down and ceases as her hands fall to her lap. “I just don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
“You didn’t have to do anything, moya lyubov.” Natasha holds Wanda’s hands, “I mean everything I just said. I love you, Wanda.”
She waits for a response with bated breath. Before she knows it, she feels supple lips capture her own.
It’s tender yet electric. It’s everything she’s ever imagined and more. It’s simply perfect.
Natasha closes her eyes and deepens the kiss. She cradles Wanda’s jaw and feels the brunette melt into her touch. They pull away seconds later, foreheads touching as they catch their breath. Wanda says softly, “I love you too, Natasha. You don’t know how long I have been wanting to say that.”
───── ⴵ⋅ᗢ⋅ⴵ ─────
Now I know what it feels like
To wanna go outside
It was a calm morning, both women following a routine established over the past few months. Natasha would wake up early and then proceed to training, leaving Wanda to sleep in. By the time she’d be back, Wanda was up and just finishing preparing breakfast. They’d eat together, talk about their plans for the day, and decide what to do from there. Some days they’d spend together while, on others, they’d have separate activities.
“Detka! Come here, please!”
Natasha was working on some reports when she heard Wanda call out. She looks at the clock and decides now is a perfect time to take a break anyway. She hums as she stands up and stretches her limbs before leaving the room.
Wanda had been tending to the garden in the compound for some time now. She started with small pots of herbs and then moved to random vegetables after discovering she had a gift for raising plants. Lately, she also added flowers and various houseplants to her catalog. Being out in the sun, getting her hands dirty, and nurturing these plants was hard work, but it was work Wanda loved.
Natasha makes a couple of peanut butter sandwiches and pours two glasses of cold water on a tray, then carries it over to the sliding door leading to the garden. She places it down on a table outside and her eyes immediately search for Wanda. It’s an irresistible sight, her beloved’s face beaming and surrounded by greenery. She even thinks she sees her talking to the plants.
She smiles to herself while appreciating the view until Wanda realizes she’s arrived. She gets waved over, “Tasha!” The excitement in the witch’s voice is barely contained as Natasha walks towards her.
She wraps an arm around Wanda, bringing her closer and kissing her forehead, “Hi, kotenok. I brought over some snacks and water if you wanted them. What is it you wanted me to see?”
Wanda pulls off her gardening gloves, places them in her pocket, and brushes her hands over her pants. She mumbles a quick thank you before taking Natasha’s hand in one of her own and using the other to cover her eyes.
“Close your eyes. I want this to be a surprise.”
Natasha plays along, using her free hand to help cover her eyes. “Okay. Just make sure I don’t trip, yeah?”
Wanda giggles as she leads Natasha by the hand, “Don’t worry, detka, I got you.”
They walk slowly, up a few steps, and stop. Wanda takes a deep breath, “Okay, now.”
When their hands uncover Natasha’s eyes, she is met with vibrant blooms of various colors against a green background of bushes. It’s a masterful arrangement of asters, marigolds, hydrangeas, wildflowers, and many more. She gasps, breath taken away by the gorgeous sight.
“You did all this by yourself?”
The Sokovian nods sheepishly, “Yeah. I read somewhere that getting them all to bloom like this would be challenging, but I think I did decently.”
Natasha squeezes her hand, “It’s more than decent. It looks stunning, Wands. You did an amazing job.”
Wanda’s arm wraps around Natasha’s waist, her head rests on her shoulder. A satisfied sigh leaves her lips. They remain silent, basking in each other’s presence and the garden view.
“If you’re like this with plants, I can only imagine how well you’d be with kids,” Natasha muses.
Wanda lifts her head and looks at Natasha, her shoulders raised slightly, “What if, at some point, you won’t have to imagine?”
Small smiles grow on both of their faces. They share a knowing look before assuming their previous positions. “Someday, lyubov, someday.”
Natasha used to feel the need to keep busy, keep moving because she thought anything too constant would be taken away from her again. Though she never admitted it to anyone, not even herself, the thought of settling down and starting a family of her own was terrifying.
But not anymore. Everything felt so much easier with Wanda. It now truly felt like anything was possible. The lack of fear forced onto her when she was younger came from a dark place of abuse and indifference. Now, it comes naturally. It comes from love.

Best Friend - based on @diyasgarden's betting on loosing dogs cats and her cat headcanons. definitely go check them out if you haven't yet!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the story of tashi and her childhood best friend (1.86k words)
tw: i have not seen the movie so all my knowledge is via osmosis. writing some of these scenes was cathartic. enjoy me working through my own grief and know my tears wet the keyboard. i may have forgotten about art a little bit but this is tashi centric so im just going to say whoops and move on
Tashi was a lonely child. It was just a fact. Even with siblings wrapped around her and hanging off her arms, she swept through her childhood with few permanent attachments.
She was vibrant, regardless of her seclusion. The bounce of her curls and the seemingly infinite energy she possessed endeared her to teachers and classmates. Bright, sparkling curiosity filled her eyes. The librarian saw the most of her, incidentally. With clumsy fingers and boosted toes, she tipped titles from higher and higher shelves, thicker and thicker books filling her arms and her Princess Aurora backpack.
After playdates, summer camps and schedules packed high with unfamiliar names, her parents finally acquiesced. There would be no friend for their daughter, not one she wanted.
Instead, that Christmas, she received two very special presents. An oddly shaped thing with one blunt, cylindrical end and, on the other side, a curved, flat plane; the other was a larger, rectangular box that mewled periodically, its princess wrapping paper massacred with pinholes. She anguishes when she sees a prick right over the left side of Aurora's shimmering pink dress.
Her parents initially direct her towards the oddly shaped gift, no matter how the mewling box draws her ears. Under the light of the rainbowed tree, the LEDs reflecting their colors over her full face, she unknowingly, and with youthful gusto, unwraps her future.
Her very own tennis racket. The gift included the promise of lessons, starting after her holiday break. She'd been curious about her parents' rackets, the handles much too big for her young, soft palms. Now, she can try it all on her own—emulating the fierce girls she revered on TV.
A whine from the larger box draws her attention again, and eyes shining with anticipation turn to her parents. A single nod, and little legs are scampering across the hardwood as she runs to delicately peel off the paper.
The cardboard box under it is as pricked as the wrapping paper, the top untaped. Reaching past the unassuming packaging, she's jolted when something touches her. Soft, with points as pokey as the needle that made the holes. She's nothing if not fearless, however.
As the cardboard flaps are peeled back one by one, the thing, no, paw that reached out to grab her tugs on the last one. It's small, orange, with tiny claws puncturing shallowly. Her fingers, larger and without as sharp nails, gently pries it off so she can finally open the box.
A kitten. A kitten sits, dwarfed by the size of the box. When she reaches for it, it retreats—sniffing her fingers before deciding her a worthy companion. It's all but eager now, pressing into her hands until she picks it up and cradles it to her chest. Its teensy chest starts to rumble with a crackly purr.
"She's yours." Startles her out of her revere, so absorbed in the little body against hers. Her mother's words are said with a smile. She finally found a friend, one that didn't live in pages. "All yours."
Her father chimes in not long after.
"What's her name, Natasha?"
A pause. Tashi blinks, contemplation in the set of her pout and in the subtle furrow in her brow. Her eyes don't stray from the yellows of her newest companion.
"Serena," comes, the resolve in her tone sounding odd in the heightened pitch of a six-year-old.
She'd grow into it.
She'd soon learned her two favorite sounds: the thwack of a tennis ball and the thundering of Serena's purr.
They were familiar, and borderline ordinary. She heard the first over and over, for hours at a time, multiple times a week. Serena's purr, in the same vein, was the thing that greeted her with the sun and lulled her into sleep. Yet, she thought them spectacular. Whenever they reached her ears, that golden smile appeared.
She was always good. Always spectacular at tennis. Sweeping through matches flooded her veins with sweet adrenaline, sweat that dropped to the court marking her path to the stars. Even when she'd left them all behind, flown far away and was weightless in her tennis shoes, it'd say: I, Tashi Duncan, was here. I won.
The thing that brought her back to Earth was simple. Even with the lure of the stars, the rumbling, crackling purr and sweet meows, like the quake she experienced at eleven and the cracking boom of thunder she'd once feared, grounded her in her emotions. Her feelings, not for boys but for Serena overflowed from her heart and spilled out like a split dam, widening her smiles and filling her mind, motivating her game and keeping her present.
At seventeen she was up-and-coming. Her birthday fell a few days after the US Open, so on her last few days as a child, she bundled up with her familiar friend and boarded the metal plane. It would be her wings, giving her that taste of future freedom, of the sky she reached for.
Her transcendence faded in sleep, leaving just a girl and her cat, sleepy and covered in shed hair and so, so young.
She won. She won the Junior Open.
Everything's set in stone now. She can see her future playing out—at Stanford, tearing through the competition and tearing through the pages of novels (she never quite lost her love for words; instead it evolved from Junie B. Jones to Mary Shelley.) Then, she'd go pro, breaking out into the Grand Slams like a comet blazing by.
Art and Patrick were the unexpected twist.
Zweig and Donaldson. Fire and Ice. The perfect duo. One would be joining her at Stanford. The other? Leaving for the intense performance of the pros with her number stashed in his mobile—left sweating under the stage lights of expectations states away.
Whether he'd buckle under the intensity was to be seen. At least his green crash pad was well in place, waiting to be fallen back on.
Practice was routine.
Art was routine.
Serena was at home, with her parents.
The separation was killing her. Some days, especially hearing the thwack of the ball, she felt the ache of her halved heart. She knew she wouldn't go home to her second (first) favorite sound.
Red. There's a lot of red at Stanford, Tashi noticed. Even in her dorm room, the banner on her wall and poster above her bed, the jacket strewn over her chair and the sweaty shorts discarded on her floor. The red apples of Patrick's cheeks and the pinkening to his lips. She let her eyes close and welcomed their press and the darkness behind her eyelids.
They were good. They were fine. He was fine. Then they weren't.
Tashi always knew her heart was fragmented. Tennis, Serena, Patrick. Each one beat independent, for the most part. When they synced was euphoric.
One of her best memories was during her spring break. Patrick had a break before his next tournament, and they packed up in his dingy car to putter back to her parents'. Spending the week there, lounging like house cats, lobbing lazy forehands back and forth and falling asleep every night to Serena's crackling purr and Patrick's heavy arm over her.
It was the most alive she'd every felt.
The game. The game was all that mattered. Not Patrick flaking. Not the absence of her friend. Just the game. That was the piece of her heart still intact.
Then her knee pops sickeningly, releasing out from under her and all she could see was red.
Stanford fans in the stands and her opponent's flushed cheeks, Art's crimson shirt and the pain red-hot behind her eyelids.
The darkness when her eyes shut was a comfort once again. It hides the sight of her swelling, purpling knee. It doesn't stop the pain.
Maybe she'd slip into a blessed unconsciousness.
100 years, Maleficent proclaimed. The princess shall sleep.
She'd never play tennis again, that much was clear. The doctor been almost certain.
Art tried to make her feel better. All she could think of was a familiar rumble she ached for.
She was released to spend a few weeks at her parents, away from the worry of school and her emotional turmoil. A few weeks with Serena, to get back to their routine, to the purrs on her chest and the weaving beneath her feet.
Serena was a bit more careful staying underfoot after her first smell of her braced knee and the sight of her white crutches.
Maybe she'd log her as an emotional support pet, just so she wouldn't loose her whole heart when she went back.
She didn't get that far. She didn't even have the time to get the paper.
Serena fell from Tashi's bed and broke her pelvis a week in. The howl she made was a new noise. One she never should have made.
They spent the whole day at the emergency vet. Tashi's eyes had never been so red-rimmed. She cried, in that sterile waiting room, as they took Serena back and cooed sadly.
She fell into an exhausted sleep, buried in her mother's side with her lip still caught between her teeth.
The doctor's thought the break was suspicious. Cats are usually springier, the vet had said. Even the older ones, like her. She was kind, and caring. Her green scrubs, pattered with paw prints, slowly became orange with Serena's fur. Her hands were warm when they handed her the lab papers.
Bone cancer, the plain black text said, in it's painfully ordinary font. The type that, apparently, had crept through Serena's body and made itself a home in her lungs. It burrowed, unwanted, in the place that held her life. It infected the space right above her heart. Waiting longer, says the vet, would be cruel.
She didn't even look at the amount of tumors they found. Once she saw the double digits she shattered, just that bit more.
The vet gave her time to say her goodbyes. It was all they really could do.
Thirteen years. Thirteen years they'd grown together.
Serena was once bundled in too-big cardboard, clawing energetically at the walls and sinking pinprick claws into her shirt.
Now, she's swaddled in a soft blanket, looking fat and warm but so, so tired.
Tashi holds her on her aching knee and weeps. She presses warm lips press to the forehead of her first friend, her favorite thing. Slender arms cradle this beautiful baby cat to her chest. Serena is sedated, a little medicine for the pain. Her purr's crackling now, muted and rattling. A soft, small paw presses to Tashi's tear-streaked, tawny cheek.
It's time to go, she hears faintly. It feels like she has her head underwater. Her throat and lungs and fingers squeeze as the needle slides in, past fluffed, orange fur. Serena doesn't even flinch. Yet, Tashi feels like she's drowning.
Her form (little, so little. Her baby—) goes limp in her lap.
How's she supposed to survive with no heart?
The next morning arrives with silence. Not even the chirping of the birds.
She curls tight in a too-empty bed and feels her heart wither in her chest.

can you PLEASE do a fic of different times the avengers find out something new about natasha. IK ITS REALLY RANDOM but i saw a prompt on PINTEREST. PINTEREST. AGES AGO and i cannot stop thinking about it. like it could be whilst shes drunk and doesnt stop talkin about secrets about herself she wouldnt usually say or like she'd tell them about the most concerning things ever happening to her in the red room and smile n shrug or smth. IDM ANY SHIPS so u can choose (or just none x). THIS IS REALLY RANDOM but THANK YOU if u actually end up writing this.
first marvel fic !! so glad it's a nat centric one bc i love her sm. that being said, i dont want to minimise how traumatic the red room was for her so im considering writing a p2 to this where she talks about it properly..
drunk natasha - blackhill
Tumblr media
a/n: this is in the pov of tony, but there is maria/nat at the end. also all the avengers are there but sadly not all of then have dialogue :((
cws: talk of the red room (although unexplicit, pls be wary!)
wc: 492
Tumblr media
tony probably shouldn't have spiked the booze.
how do you spike booze, you might be asking? well, if anyone asked, he would give a vague response like, "you can spike anything if you put your mind to it." if natasha romanoff - the person who had arguably been the most affected by it - asked, he would run away to save his life.
anyway, he probably shouldn't have spiked the booze, because now natasha - the person (excluding thor, steve, and bucky, because they had a biological advantage) with the highest alchohol tolerance of them all was tipsy, and rambling.
it was definitely a sight to behold.
"what booze is this?" natasha asked, for the third time that night. her russian accent was more prominent now that she was intoxicated. "oh! my favourite. when i was in the red room, one of my targets had this brand, and i... i poisoned it." her voice lowered to a whisper, and she giggled conspirationally.
tony, along with the other 5 avengers, froze. natasha had never talked about her time in the red room before, and he wasn't sure if she even wanted to now, or if it was the vodka making her loose-lipped.
bruce, who was the only one still semi-sober, began to protest. "nat, maybe you should-"
"it's fiiine, brucie." she waved him off, leaning into the cushioned couch. suddenly, she perked back up. "oh! another funny story, when i was out on a mission with another girl, we got drunk. i- i kissed her, and... it was on purpose, that time. before, we would have to kiss and stuff as part of the act, but with lyubov i wanted it."
"and stuff?" clint noted with concern. the archer had been the first to down 2 consecutive drinks, and also the first to lead a game of drunk pictionary, but now he seemed dead serious.
tony was 90% drunk himself, but even he was beginning to get worried about nat.
natasha smiled demurely, seemingly oblivious.
"how old were you?" tony blurted.
she thought about it for a while. "fourteen.” she began singing. “you just don't step inside to, to fourteen years. ha. that song was playing earlier." she made finger guns, pretending to shoot at tony while grinning. "guns n roses."
suddenly (and thankfully) maria walked in. natasha immediately greeted her girlfriend, demanding a kiss. maria complied, although it was chaste, and pulled away when nat tried to deepen it.
"what did you boys do to my girlfriend?" maria asked. "stark, i'm talking to you."
tony cringed. "i may have.. spiked the booze."
she narrowed her eyes. tony was prepared to kiss life goodbye then and there, but natasha sat up and hugged maria, awkwardly given their position. she looked down softly at her girlfriend, before giving tony another glare.
"i'm taking her back to our room," maria announced. "and i am never leaving her alone with you lot ever again."
“that's fair,” echoed steve softly.

i hate how there was plans for a monica rambeau centric series only for it to get cancelled cause of the marvels not doing well at the box office. We deserve more Monica and I hate how she'll continue to be a supporting character in other projects and not get to be the main lead in her own solo film/series like how Natasha, Wanda and Peggy got their solo projects. Those fucking mcu incels are the reason we can't have nice things
So here's the thing though we shouldn't give up. We can still advocate for Monica Rambeau and her storyline. Like white ppl were excited for Deadpool and wolverine but we can apply pressure to the white people in our lives to pay attention to Monica Rambeau. Because its plain misogynoir/racialized misogyny that yt ppl don't care about the Marvels movie and only celebrate Dp/Wolverine. Like not only did Wanda get her own show and now potentially a movie but also it launched another white woman show in Agatha all along. its white supremacy!!!
