unexpected source of marital tension - this cheese-themed mouse moved in to our animal crossing island and I was like "absolutely not" but my wife thinks he's cute

If I remember correctly, Draven’s first roll of the entire WotR campaign was a nat 1. She was in a tavern and tried to preform with her violin to make money to cover drinks for her and Auriel, and one of her violin strings snapped.
This was very much a look at what kinds of rolls Draven would get for the rest of the game.
#Draven Imani#pathfinder#wrath of the righteous#every version of Draven I’ve ever made is plagued by bad rolls#in the original campaign she rolled so badly someone weaponsized her bad luck against her and it worked#in the WotR video game she faired better than any other incarnation of her but she still had some dud rolls at important moments#in BG3 Draven failed almost every roll early game#except 1 nat 20 to headbut Astarion in the face#which tbh was very on brand

Are you f****** kidding me?!
Masterlist
Pairings: Natasha romanoff x reader
Prompt: y/n has very bad trauma with alcoholism in her family, so she never drinks. Natasha never pushes it and is always protective of her decisions but what happens when the boys play a little “prank”on y/n?
Warnings: trauma, ptsd in a way?, reader freaks out, getting drunk, spiked drinks, protective nat, swearing, mentions of sh, fake allergic reaction.
A/N: guys sometimes I’m not great at explaining things in the warnings. So I put a question mark lol. I hope y’all understand it though.
Y/n’s pov
Once again I’m at one of Tony’s parties. I think his excuse this week is his mom’s business partner’s daughter is having a birthday soon.
Whatever. There’s no point in actually caring it’s just another ploy for him to get drunk.
I usually leave before that time.
I start off my night with a water. I plan to finish the night with the same. Then suddenly Pietro comes up to me with Sam and says
“Hey y/n!”
I smile at him and notice he’s holding two drinks.
“Hey Piet. What are you doing?”
He smiles and says
“Bringing a drink to my favorite person.”
I roll my eyes at him. We get along because we like to prank people a lot. And play video games.
I frown as he hands me a drink and I say
“Piet you know I don’t drink”
He curses under his breath and says
“Oh right yeah! Let me take that and I’ll get you a virgin drink yeah?”
I nod my head and thank him as they both walk away. I guess Sam is just trailing along.
After a few minutes they come back and hand me a different drink and I say
“What is this?”
He looks at it and says
“A drink doofus”
I roll my eyes at his antics and say
“No I mean what’s in this drink?”
He looks at Sam and says
“It’s like a celcius!”
Sam agrees quickly and I say
“Oh. So like an energy drink?”
They both nod their head in unison and I smirk and say
“Thanks guys. You know I have a hard time with these things. Especially since nat is on a mission right now.”
Sam wanders off and Piet stays by me as I drink a few sips. It’s pretty good.
We talk a bit and Piet says
“How is that flavor? I have something else and I was just wondering.”
I smile and say
“It’s orange I think. Not the best but it’s decent.”
His eyes have a fire in them and he says
“Here! Why don’t I get you a different flavor?”
I nod and say
“I’m sure two wouldn’t hurt right? It’s only energy drinks and they don’t really affect me”
He nods and says he’ll be right back so I finish off my drink and wait for him.
When he comes back he has a slightly pink tinted drink for me and i immediately try it.
“This one is good!”
He nods his head.
I have about three of those drinks and I’m starting to feel great. My stomach hurts a bit but I feel fine.
And this girl is talking to me and her jokes are literally so funny. Like I have the giggles or something.
We start dancing and then I somehow end up with Wanda. We’re best friends but we are not leaving any room for Jesus. I usually don’t have this much fun at these parties.
Then I end up on a couch with another girl by my side and I’m just talking her ear off. She looks interested.
All of a sudden I get a rush of heat over my face. I just zone out trying to pinpoint what’s going on.
By now the girl has left and I see a flash of red come in my view.
“Y/n? Y/n detka focus on me. Where are you baby?”
My beautiful girlfriend Natasha pulls me from my trance and I throw myself on her and say
“Natty!!”
She lets me hug her and I get another rush of that feeling again.
She notices and says
“Are you alright?”
I nod my head and then think, and shake my head.
“What’s wrong detka?”
I lean on her shoulder as she sits next to me and I say
“I don’t know. I feel weird.”
Natasha looks at the table and sees three glasses and says
“Are those yours?”
I nod and smile
“Piet got me these three flavors of energy drinks. I can’t remember what he said they were called though. But he said they were like celcius”
She nods and grabs one of the glasses. She picks it up to her nose and smells it and sets it back down.
“Y/n you said you liked these? And you wanted them?”
I nod me head and say
“They were really yummy but I think they’re hurting my tummy a bit”
I pout and she looks to the side as if she’s scanning the crowd for someone. I follow her eyes and they land on Pietro and Sam who are giggling like teen girls. I slur out
“What are they laughing at natty?”
She looks to the side unsure of what to say and my eyes widen and I sit up. This realization has my mind sobered up a bit and I look at her with tears in my eyes.
“Nat? Is that alcohol?”
She bites her lip unsure of what to do but she nods her head and I say
“Pietro and Sam told me it wasn’t. They said they got me a virgin kind.”
She shakes her head and says
“I’m so sorry baby”
I shake my head and push her away. I immediately get up and walk off. I almost bump into a few people and I trip up a bit but not bad. I go straight to our room and Natasha decided to stay back to handle the perpetrators.
She makes sure Friday alerts her if I end up anywhere other than our room.
Nobody’s pov
To say Natasha was angry was an understatement.
She was furious.
She had to watch you storm off to probably go and cry because of what they did to you.
She stands up and brushes herself off. And then she calmly walks over to Pietro and Sam.
They say
“Oh hey nat! You’re back!”
Natasha smiles at them and says
“You wouldn’t happen to know what was in those drinks that you gave y/n would you?”
They shrug their shoulders and say
“What drinks? What are you talking about?”
Natasha is pissed so her patience is gone and she grabs them both by the ear and pulls them to the side of the room.
The noise isn’t any less quiet, it’s just out of the way.
And she goes ballistic.
“Are you fucking kidding me?! Do you know what you did to her?! Everybody knows that y/n doesn’t drink because of her fears that she will end up like her father. She’s probably in our room now panicking about how she’s an alcoholic from three drinks!! And you!”
She points to Pietro
“You know better than to do that! You know she has problems. And you still did that! I should have the both of you banned from stark parties forever! You both intentionally spiked her drink! You two are literally dead!”
By now the room is silent from how loud Natasha is screaming at them. All eyes are on them but she doesn’t care.
“She was your friend and you did this to her! That is the ultimate betrayal and I wouldn’t blame her if she never wants to see your faces again! Get out of here. I don’t want to see you at another party! And I expect there to be ample apologies tomorrow!”
They nod and scurry off. Wanda is behind natashw now and she gives her a look as if she’s asking if they really did that to you and Natasha nods her head.
Wanda’s eyes glow red and she walks off in Pietro direction.
After Natasha knows they’ll be handled she smooths out her shirt and looks around at everyone gawking at her.
She raises and eyebrow and says
“Would anybody like to go with them?”
They all shake their heads and go back to partying.
Natasha goes upstairs to find you in your room.
She slowly walks up to your ball of a self and says
“Y/n? Are you alright?”
Apparently she chose the wrong set of words because you shoot up and say
“No im not alright! How can I be alright?! I’m literally drunk because I’m a lightweight and I feel disgusting because I liked it. And that’s why I never drink because I’m just like my father and I’ll like that shit and I’ll probably get hooked on it now!”
You are pacing back and forth and your breathing is erratic so Natasha goes up and grabs you and says
“Woah woah woah. Detka please calm down. You need to hear me. You are not an alcoholic from getting drunk once. You know that you don’t drink and that you won’t drink. Just because you liked the alcohol does not mean you are hooked okay? You clearly don’t like being drunk at all because it is hurting you.”
You are now just standing in Natasha’s grasp as she speaks to you.
“And you are most definitely not your father. You know now to not trust them with drinks anymore. Listen. I’m so sorry they did that to you. But you need to know it is not your fault. At. All. They spiked your drink knowing that you don’t drink for a reason.”
Y/n’s pov
I nod my head taking in all this information. And I tear up a bit.
“Hey hey don’t cry baby. It’s okay. It’s not your fault”
I shake my head as some tears start to fall and I say
“No no. I’m not crying because of this. I’m crying because you’re so good to me. Nobody would have reassured me like this except you. I just love you so much.”
We both smile and kiss each other and then we pull away because there is a knock at the door and I softly say
“Come in”
Wanda steps in and says
“Hey. How are you?”
I smile and say
“Still drunk”
I laugh and Wanda says
“Do you want me to get you a water?”
Natasha shakes her head and says
“We keep bottles of water in our room. I’ll grab her one.”
Wanda nods and says
“Right well I just wanted to let you know that I just got onto both their asses again and they are on probation for two months”
I furrow my eyebrows and say
“Probation?”
Wanda explains to me that probation is basically they don’t get any missions for two months. And she also added in there that they have to do my mission reports for that length of time too which is amazing since I hate mission reports.
“Wow Wands. That’s so sweet. Thank you”
She shakes her head and says
“No problem. Now I have one more question. They want to come in and apologize to you. Is that okay? I just want to check.”
I think about it and Natasha says
“You don’t have to agree detka. They can sulk in their rooms for now.”
I smile when I get a devious idea.
“What if you guys help me prank them back!”
They raise their eyebrows in concern and say
“What kind of prank?”
I think and say
“I can use my makeup skills and pretend I cut myself because of how bad my mind got!”
Their eyes widen and they say
“Woah there. That’s a little much.”
“Yeah Wanda’s right. Maybe a less intense prank?”
I sigh and nod my head. And then I completely forget about my idea when I say
“Wanda! You can use your powers to temporarily distort my face and body and we can prank them by saying I’m having an allergic reaction to the alcohol! Make them regret it even more!”
Wanda smiles and says
“I think that’s a good idea, but you’ve already had the alcohol in your system for a while. I think allergic reactions happen faster”
Natasha says
“They’re stupid. We can say it was a late onset reaction”
I nod my head aggressively. A little too aggressive though so I say
“Woah. Too much head shake there”
Natasha stabilizes me as Wanda says
“Alright. Why don’t you sit on the ground and I’ll work my magic?”
I sit down a little slowly so that I don’t get woozy or anything and while I’m waiting, Natasha gets me a water to help me sober up.
Wanda then distorts my face to look all red and blotchy and I get fake hives everywhere. I smile and say
“Nat. When were pranking them we can go in my bedside table and grab my old inhaler. I can use it to puff and it won’t do anything, and say I’m out!”
She nods her head. Anything to make me feel better.
And Wanda steps out and says
“I’ll be back with the boys.”
I giggle at my devious plan and Natasha says
“You’re gonna have to stop giggling if you want them to believe it”
I nod my head and get in serious mode. I lie myself in Natasha’s lap as she sits on her knees to pretend like she’s cradling me.
We here Wanda walking back and saying
“You better apologize and mean it”
They reply with a few “yes ma’am’s” and Natasha decided now is a good time.
“Wanda!”
She all but yells.
Thank goodness the party is still going so nobody else can hear.
Wanda runs in with Pietro and Sam hot on her tail and they see me.
Natasha puts on a facade that she’s freaking out and I make my breathing labored as if my lungs are closing up.
“Wanda! Help me out here! Y/n’s having an allergic reaction to the alcohol! I need her inhaler!”
Wanda jumps into action and says
“Where is it?!”
“In her bedside table”
Wanda runs to get it and only now can I see the boys. Their faces are ghostlike when they realize what they’ve done.
I fake puff the inhaler and shake my head. Natasha checks it and says
“Fuck.”
Pietro and Sam are now freaking out and saying
“Wait she can’t have an allergic reaction it’s been like forever!”
Natasha responds with
“It’s late onset and now her inhaler is empty! None of this would have happened if you didn’t spike her drinks!”
I gasp and say
“Epi… pen”
And Natasha remembers I have an epipen for if I get stung by a bee. And there’s a trainer in the bag so she grabs the trainer and they freak out.
She uses the trainer which does nothing but make a click sound and then she sighs as Wanda makes the reaction fade slightly.
They all sigh in relief and Sam and Pietro are the first to say something
“Y/n we’re so sorry. We had no idea this would happen!”
“Yeah we wouldn’t have done it if we knew!”
Natasha looks up and says
“But you would have done it even though you knew about her father?”
Their faces once again go like ghosts and I start laughing at them.
They’re confused and Wanda starts to giggle.
I hop up and say
“You idiots! We pranked you back!”
They stand there confused. Sam is the first to say
“But- but you used an epipen”
I shake my head and say
“That’s the trainer. It helps people know what to do in a real situation. The trainer doesn’t have a needle or medication in it”
He sighs and says
“What about your inhaler?”
I shrug and say
“Empty one. Doesn’t do anything anymore.”
Pietro is just silent and I say
“Aww Piet. Are you sad that I just pranked you?”
He shakes out of it and starts apologizing.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. I know you didn’t have a reaction but I’m sorry because I didn’t think about why you don’t drink. I knew why but I ignored it.”
I sigh and say.
“I forgive you Piet. Just remember that we don’t do pranks that cause harm to someone.”
He nods and I turn to Sam
“And I forgive you too. Now both of you. I’d like to inform you that I have been letting my mission reports back up and I’m glad to tell you that you have until the end of the week to finish five of them”
They groan and say
“Yes ma’am”
I smile and they leave. I turn to Wanda and say
“Thanks fairy wand. You made me feel a lot better”
And I turn to Natasha and say
“Thank you too”
Wanda leaves and we get into bed (not without me putting up a fight) and Natasha makes me finish the bottle before I fall asleep.
“Thank you natty. You’re so good to me”
She smiles and says
“You’re a little devil when you’re drunk you know that?”
I smile and say
“Eh. I’ll be fine tomorrow”
She rolls her eyes and we fall asleep in each others eyes with Natasha knowing I’m gonna be worse when I’m hungover.

Slumber Party & Prankss
Master list
Summary: You and the ladies were finally having a slumber party to get away from the men but little did you know, Sam and Bucky were up to something
Word Count: 929
Pairing: Wandanat x reader
Warnings: Spiders, Bucky and Sam pranking reader, Wanda kicking their ass for it, Talks of drinking
“Okay ladies, I have the popcorn, the drinks, the candy, am I missing something” Pepper asked as she set down everything on the table of the living room. “The real drinks Pepper, we need alcohol” Valkyrie said as she sat down on the floor. “No, no drinking tonight ladies, you guys do that every day when you reunite” Wanda and Nat looked at you and Carol, Valkyrie always dragged you two into drinking on the rooftop.
“What movie are we watching, anyway?” Carol asked as she scrolled through the movie options, “I wanted to do a Harry Potter marathon” Pepper answered making everyone protest. “Oh come on guys, we only watched the 1st and 2nd one last time, you can’t just watch the first two and stop” “Yes you can” Nat said smiling as Pepper kept arguing. Little did you guys know. Sam and Bucky were planning something.
“Who are we going to prank though?” Sam asked, making Bucky shrug. They were sitting in Sam’s room playing video games, Bucky of course still confused on the controls. “Can’t prank Pepper because Tony will cut our budget, Carol will destroy this whole tower if we do something, Valkyrie literally has no fears and isn’t scared to kill us, Nat and Wanda are too scary. Y/N?” Sam looked a little scared, “Wanda and Nat will kill us if we did that, unless we get her away and bribe her not to tell them after,” Bucky nodded, “What is she scared of?” Sam smirked, “Spiders, fucking terrified of them, should have seen her when Peter brought his tarantulas this morning,” “Is Pete still here?” Sam nodded, “He’s in the lab with Tony,” Bucky stood up and started walking to the lab. “Let’s do some negotiating,”
Bucky and Sam were able to bribe Pete into giving them his tarantulas and were deciding on where to set it up. After some arguing they decided to do the prank in Sam’s room. They put them in Sam’s bathroom and Bucky grabbed them out of their container and set them down. They decided they were going to go down there and ask you to come check out some of Sam’s outfit ideas for a “date” he had.
Once they stepped foot in the living room they were quickly met by protest from all of you. “Did you not see the no boys allowed sign outside” Carol said as she threw popcorn at them. They held their hands up, “We just need Y/N” Sam explained, making you raise your eyebrow. “Why?” you asked as they expected you would. “I have a date tomorrow, and I need your advice on some outfits, you know how bad Bucky’s fashion is” all the girls let out a ‘ooo’ sound at Sam’s statement. “Okay Sammy, let's go then” you jumped up and skipped out of the living room.
“Who’s the lucky person?” you asked, “oh, someone I met at the park, um, Y/N” he asked, getting nervous about pulling this off. “Yeah, Sammy?” you asked. “Can you get my tie from the bathroom?” you shrugged and did it. Bucky walked close behind ready to close the door, “Where is i- HOLY SHIT. SAM THERE'RE SPIDERS” You yelled ready to run out but Bucky closed the door before you could and held it closed. “BUCKY. NO” you yelled crying as you banged on the door. You quickly jumped on the sink and stared down at the spider’s that were just crawling around minding their own business. After a couple of minutes they finally decided it was enough and opened the door.
“Wanda! Nat!” you yelled and ran past them once they opened the door, “Wait Y/N” Sam yelled as Bucky zoomed to you and grabbed you and shut your mouth before you could get to the elevator. “Y/N, stop” Bucky whispered in your ear and felt bad as you cried more. “Calm down” he comforted but little did they know, you were telepathically communicating to Wanda.
It wasn’t long until you guys heard the elevator beep and then came out an angry Wanda and Nat who looked at the scene of Bucky holding you down with a hand over your mouth and Sam trying to bribe you with money and tickets to see Taylor Swift. “What do you think you're doing?” Nat demanded as Bucky and Sam quickly got up looking terrified. You started laughing at their faces and took the tickets and money from Sam. “Wanda! Nat! Look, tickets for Taylor’s concert” you giggled as you ran over to them. You were supposed to buy some but the day they went out you guys got put on a 2 week mission so by the time you got back they were all gone. Wanda pulled you into a hug and wiped your tear-stained cheeks, smiling a bit at your happiness.
“Why don’t you go back to the sleepover hun, Pepper is putting on Harry Potter” you cheered and ran off again completely forgetting about the trauma you just got put through.
“I’ll give you a five second head start” Nat smirked as she saw Wanda’s eyes were glowing, she was going to let Wanda handle this one. She stepped back and watched as Wanda flew through the hallways and laughed as she heard the boys scream of terror.
This was probably one of the most unforgettable slumber party you've had, but at least you got Taylor Swift tickets and Wanda and Nat knew they were going to be dragged along and you were going to spend all their money on more merch.

Friendship Headcanons
Cause I’m feeling the wholesome vibes
I’m gonna talk about the friendships that have yet to be shown on the blog just so it doesn’t feel like I’m retreading familiar waters.
- Jane and Tim are very close. The lesbian and gay friends who constantly get mistaken for a couple kind of close. She’s the reason Tim’s wardrobe is actually cool and stylish and not him wearing flannel and jeans all the damn time. They also love to gossip together. Really it’s Jane doing all the gossiping and Tim is just listening and compiling a mental binder of dirt he has on everyone.
- Brian and EJ are best friends weirdly enough despite EJ being someone who tends to get annoyed easily and Brian is kinda sorta “too much” sometimes. Their back and forth banter makes it seem like they dislike each other, but it’s all in good fun. They actually care deeply for one another and are like the definition of ride or die.
- Because Nina is the only teenager, most of the others tend to baby her much to her annoyance. The only people who don’t really do that are Jane and Nat. They do their best to make Nina feel included without coming off as condescending. They also like to have girls night together.
- Nina and EJ have formed a rather close bond. It started when Nina finally accepted the fact she’s aromantic and looked to EJ for support as he’s also aromantic. He helped show her that being aromantic isn’t bad at all and that romance really isn’t the be all end all.
- Brian and Ben are also close friends. Again, rather odd when Ben gets overwhelmed easily and Brian is Brian. They’re actually gaming buddies and most of their time spent together is over voice chat as they play video games.
- Slender and Tim had a rather complicated dynamic at first. It really rattled Tim to learn that, while extremely distant, there is a familial tie between him and Slender. That being said, over time they have formed a connection that is basically like a father/son dynamic though Tim would rather relive the events of Marble Hornets than ever admit that
- Jeff and Sally are also in a similar boat. Sally is Jeff’s great aunt but obviously Jeff is the one who takes care of her. He is her main babysitter after all. Jeff subconsciously sees Sally as this second chance to actually be a good brother to someone.
- Toby and Brian are good buddies cause they can match each other’s energy. While most of the other manor residents prefer to have a night in, Brian and Toby will be out in the clubs and bars having a good time and making sure the other doesn’t die.
- A pair that surprised everyone but makes a lot of sense in hindsight is Slender and Jane. They have tea every other day and are part of a two person book club where they read the same book and discuss their opinions on it. Jeff desperately wants to be in the club, but he knows Jane will find a way to permanently kill him if he tries to worm his way in.

There were three bangs that came from the other side of the wall and a voice yelled, “KEEP IT DOWN. SOME OF US HAVE STUDYING TO DO.”
The small group of college boys playing Nintendo 64 groaned and turned the music down a few notches. This was a usual occurrence for a Thursday night.
“She is such a bitch!” Zemo said.
“Come on, cut her some slack,” Bucky said.
“Since when are you defending her?” Sam asked.
“I’m just saying, if you guys were my neighbors, I’d be annoyed too.”
“Alright then Barnes if you like her so much-”
“I don’t even know her,” Bucky interrupted.
“I’ve got a proposition for you,” Zemo continued.
“What’s that?”
“Take her on a date.”
“No chance,” Bucky scoffed.
“I dare you.”
“I’m not ten years old. Daring me to do something isn’t gonna work.”
“Oh I see,” Sam added, “You know she won’t say yes.”
“That’s not it-”
“I didn’t think you were afraid of a challenge,” Zemo added.
“I’m not-”
“Sounds like you’re making a lot of excuses,” Sam said.
Bucky clenched his jaw in frustration, “Fine, fine. I will take her out on a date if it’ll get you two to shut up.”
As the other two went back to playing video games, Bucky started wracking his brain on how he was going to pull this off. Y/N was Zemo and Sam’s next door neighbor and she had a bit of a bad reputation on campus. She was the star player on the field hockey team and the only thing more lethal than her stick handling was her sarcasm. She didn’t put up with any bullshit, and people found that to be intimidating. But Bucky wasn’t intimidated, he just had to think through his first move.
He sat on the bleachers watching as field hockey practice drew to a close. Once the final whistle sounded, he took a final puff of his cigarette, dropped it on the ground and crushed it under the heel of his leather boot. He sauntered over to the bench where Y/N was gulping down a cup of water.
“Hey there doll,” he said, capturing her attention, “How are you doing?”
She crushed the cup in her hand and said, “Sweating like a pig.”
“Now there’s a way to get a guy’s attention,” he replied. She started packing up her things in a duffel bag.
“My mission in life. But I caught your attention, so you see it worked.”
She grabbed her things and started walking off the field as he followed. “Pick you up on Friday then?” he replied.
She rolled her eyes and said, “Oh right, Friday...uh-huh.”
“I'm serious," he added.
She stopped walking and turned toward him, “Do you even know my name?”
“I know a lot more than you think.”
“I highly doubt that,” she said, picking up her pace. He stood there watching her leave.
“Think about it!” he called.
She turned around just for a moment to flip him off with both hands and then continued off the field. He stood there shaking his head with a smile. He lit another cigarette and watched her leave, wondering what his next move would be.
Bucky stumbled across Y/N rather unexpectedly a few days later. He spotted her in the window of the record shop, browsing through albums, and decided to wait out front to say hi. She walked out of the store with a few vinyls and stopped in her tracks when she saw him.
“Hi,” he said, with a smile.
“What, are you stalking me now?”
“I was in the laundromat and I saw you in the window and thought I’d say hi.”
“Hi,” she said, walking away from him.
“You’re not much of a talker are you?”
“Can’t say that I am.”
Bucky took a few quick steps so that he was ahead of her and then came to a stop, blocking her path.
“You’re not afraid of me are you?” he said.
“Afraid of you? Why would I be afraid of you?”
“Most people are.”
“Okay well I’m not.”
“You may not be afraid of me, but I bet you’ve thought about me naked,” he said in his most sultry voice.
She stared at him for a moment, choosing her words very carefully.
“Wow, am I that transparent?” she replied, sarcastically. With that she nudged him out of the way and continued on her path. She turned around and saw him standing there, watching her walk away. She stuck her tongue out at him and continued on her way. He lit a cigarette as he watched her trudge off in the opposite direction.
Bucky wasn’t giving up on her that easily. It wasn’t because he wanted to win the dare, now his interest was piqued. He could always rely on his good looks to charm women, but this girl was different. His normal moves weren’t even scratching the surface. He would have to get creative. He deduced from the run in at the record store that she liked music. As luck would have it, a local girl band was playing a set at one of the bars nearby and Bucky thought there was a good chance he might run into her there.
He walked into the bar and he immediately stuck out like a sore thumb. The place was filled with women and Bucky stood about a foot taller than everyone. He immediately made his way to the bar where he caught up with one of the bartenders he knew.
“What are you doing here man?” he asked Bucky.
Bucky downed a shot of Jameson and said, “I have no idea.” The bartender poured him another drink when Bucky saw Y/N dancing in the crowd. He almost didn’t recognize her with such a big smile on her face. She was usually scowling at him, but tonight she let her hair down and was laughing and dancing with her friends. He watched her for the next few songs when she suddenly started weaving through the crowd toward the bar. Bucky brought his attention back to the bar where he took a big swig of his drink and then gazed back up to watch the band. He saw Y/N approach the corner of the bar but he kept his attention focused on the band, waiting for her to approach him. She ordered a round of drinks and then she spotted him.
She slid over toward him and said, “If you’re planning on asking me out, you might as well get it over with.”
“Do you mind?” he said, glancing at her briefly before looking back at the band, “I’m trying to listen.”
“You’re not even going to offer to buy me a drink?”
Bucky signaled to the bartender and ordered them two tequila shots and smiled at Y/N. The bartender placed the shots in front of them and Bucky took the salt shaker and sprinkled a pinch of salt on the back of her hand before doing the same to his own. He wedged the lime slice between his fingers and he held up the shot glass to her. She clinked his glass and they licked the salt, downed the shot, and then sucked on the limes.
“So what are you doing here?” she finally asked him.
“I come here a lot.”
“Not sure if you noticed, but you are one of the few guys in this bar right now.”
“Maybe this is where I come to pick up women.”
“I don’t believe you,” she said.
He shrugged, “I needed a change of scenery.”
“Ah, did you get hustled at your regular pool hall? Can’t show your face there anymore?”
“Something like that,” he smirked at her.
“Well as much as I’d love to hear that story, I have people waiting on me,” she said, grabbing the round she ordered. She collected the glasses and turned, walking back towards the dancefloor. But Bucky wasn’t finished yet. He brought his drink and followed in her footsteps.
“Come to a party with me tomorrow,” he leaned over her shoulder and spoke in her ear. She turned to look at him, rolled her eyes, and shook her head in disbelief.
“Was that a yes?” he added.
“No.”
“Was it a no?”
“...No.”
“Great, I’ll see you at 10:30.” Before she could protest, he disappeared in the crowd.
“That smug son of a bitch,” she muttered to herself, returning to her friends.

D&D AU Headcanons
Ragatha has become very in-tune with being a werebear. She’s adapted and grown to accept it as a part of herself.
Pomni, on the other hand, has not adapted to being an Aberrant Horror. How could she? It’s a horrible existence.
She’s often in pain and is almost always uncomfortable. Because retaining her humanoid form is a constant struggle. Her body is always fighting against itself, both to transform into its true form and to stay in humanoid form.
It’s Not Very Fun.
Zooble is the group protector. They’re so protective, but they’ll never admit it.
Ragatha once got hit by a silvered weapon, which hurts her Real Bad, and Zooble maimed the guy who attacked her.
They often opt to keep watch at night when the party isn’t staying in a building.
On the other hand, Ragatha is the group mom ofc.
She’s a werebear. A literal mama bear.
She always makes sure everyone eats when they’re camping while traveling.
People can ride on her back in werebear form.
Sometimes she’ll pick Pomni up by the scruff (collar of her shirt) and carry her around like that, and Pomni is just like a limp cat. She accepts it.
Kinger loves to prune Ragatha’s wings. It’s very relaxing for both of them. He’s so gentle.
He also offers to prune Pomni’s wings (which she has from being an Aberrant Horror, but they’re absorbed into her skin and only come out when she chooses to grow them), but she usually declines because they don’t have much to prune, seeing as they’re made of flesh and sinew. He respects her boundaries and doesn’t push it.
Because she’s a lycanthrope, Ragatha constantly risks going on a rampage when in her bear form. But again, she’s learned to tame her rage, and it rarely ever happens.
(Fun Fact: game mechanically-wise, she has a +9 to her Wisdom Saving Throw, so she actually cannot go on a rampage ever because even on a Nat 1, she still beats the DC, which is a 10.)
Ragatha constantly has Mending prepared for when Gangle’s mask gets broken.
As an Aberrant Horror, Pomni has the ability to mutate her arms into giant bone spikes (among other abilities), but she doesn’t do it very often because it’s freaky and gross, and she doesn’t want to scare off her buddies.
The first clip of this video but with Pomni.
Innkeeper: does your cat child need a booster seat?
Ragatha: my cat child??
Innkeeper: yes, the cat child with the tiger ears
Ragatha: no, no, no, no, this is actually a Shifter. it’s an adult woman.
Ragatha: this is an adult woman you’re looking at.
Ragatha: you’re looking at an adult woman Shifter.
Pomni doesn’t usually wear shoes because of her animal nature, but Ragatha makes her when she’s going inside, usually more fancy or important buildings.
Jax is constantly almost getting them arrested/kicked out of places because he won’t stop stealing shit.
Ragatha’s wings are rated E for everyone. If anyone is cold, they can curl up in them. If it’s raining, she’ll open them over the heads of the others. She’ll use them as shields for the others, too.
If it’s REALLY cold, she’ll go into her werebear form and just let everyone cuddle around her in her fur.
Pomni holds and squeezes her tail when she’s anxious.
Jax wears this metal point on the tip of his tail that he pokes the others with, well aware that it hurts.
Pomni chuffs like a tiger.

Pandora Program Introductory Post
The Pandora Program is a program run by the Canadian government to help superpowered teenage criminals with exceedingly long prison sentences work off their time quickly by doing dirty work for the government. It’s known about by the general population, but is believed to be a private school.
Their world takes in one similar to ours, but in which about 4% of the population has a special power. Different countries have different approaches to handling these powers, and views on them are varied. The Pandora Program, or just Pandora as I call it, focuses on Varen, a member of the program, and the missions and assignments he handles alongside other members, and about the different groups in the world that have formed from these powers.
This will be updated as more about the story is made concrete. Any questions, prompts or thoughts about my writing or characters is greatly appreciated and I will always love them!
Characters
Varen Voclain
As said, Varen is the main character. His power is complicated, and the higher-ups in the program have taken a special interest in his abilities, meaning he and his group get the harder missions and routine training, something they mildly despise him for causing. He’s roommates with Nat, and tentatively considers him a friend. He’s quite a recluse, and a very guilty person, so he fully believes he belongs in the program and sees it as a fitting punishment. He likes certain video games, sleeping, and is very protective of his long hair, which he had initially grown out to annoy his parents. Bad at picking up jokes and social cues, he often comes off as a bit off-putting to others.
Constant eye bags, a nasty scar across his face, and baggy clothes are his signature accessories. He also has a pair of simple earrings and slitted pupils similar to a cat’s, a semi-common feature in his world. They do get bigger when he’s in the dark and can make him look a little silly. He’s 18, and I haven’t been able to decide on his birthday yet.
Nathair Vaughan
He exclusively goes by Nat. He’s 19, and has been in the program since 16 after killing someone just moments after his power developed. His “power” is that anyone who makes skin-to-skin contact with him will turn into a stone statue. It’s not something that he can turn off, making it a very isolating power for someone as extroverted and physically affectionate as himself. It’s an unusual power, because almost no power’s sole purpose is to kill. To destroy or maim, maybe, but something only to kill is unheard of besides himself.
He wears a lot of clothing to protect others, and is put into an “active” group, one that does the physical work on missions, as an easy way to take someone out if needed. After the events of his sixteenth birthday, he is much more cautious when others get close to him and is very proactive about keeping them away from himself. This leads him to isolate himself despite being extroverted, and so Varen’s his first friend in a while. He takes great fun in annoying Varen, and isn’t someone who experiences embarrassment, being unapologetically loud and crude sometimes. He was involved in the “incident” that took place a couple months before the story starts.
White hair is similar to orange hair in their world, as unlike other unique hair colours it is passed down through generations. It’s a bit less uncommon than orange hair, but by far not the rarest hair colour.
Stelle Fraser
Stelle is a member of Varen and Nat’s group, with the ability to create and control the movement of light. She originally was placed in the Mayflower campus in Nova Scotia, but was considered a “problem case” and so was sent to the Trillium campus in Ontario so she could be better monitored. She’s a bit of a grump, but since being transferred seems to be in a better mood. The most honest of the group, she and Varen get along surprisingly well. She’s 19, and has been in the program for a while.
Atlas
Atlas currently doesn’t have any official art of him, for some reason. He’s able to create portals that can be travelled through and have very little limits in terms of how far they can be from each other, but I haven’t decided on other details like where he can make them. Hates the program and copes by making jokes about it, lied to Varen that the reason he was missing his leg is because the crimes he committed were so terrible that prison wasn’t enough. He was given the choice between having his power artificially suppressed or having a tracking chip put into his body, as his power was too dangerous to leave unchecked and he could easily leave. He has black hair, glasses, is 20, and is missing the lower half of his left leg.
He makes up stories about what terrible things he did with his power and how he lost his leg, but really he had it amputated as a child for medical reasons and it isn’t a cool story at all.
Charlotte
Charlotte is in the same group as Varen, Nat, Stelle, and Atlas, and in my opinion has the best power. While it’s not entirely decided on everything she can do, her main feature is obviously her six arms. She’s quite chatty and a very genuine and positive person, getting along well with everyone in the group. She and Nat can goof off together, she and Varen have a lot of nice conversations with each other, she and Stelle have a bit of a tendency to gossip, and Atlas is like an older brother to her, as she’s the youngest in the group at 17 years old. One of the people in the program where you really can’t imagine what got her put in a place like this.
Holds the world record for most limbs, spent a lot of her childhood in doctors offices and hospitals, and has signed about a million different contracts that no, she does not want to donate her body to science when she dies.
Kase
I’ve talked a lot about Kase, but I’ll do it as many times as I can. Kase has the ability to see into the future by using cartomancy, something similar to tarot readings but that he uses a deck of playing cards to do it. He can summon decks out of thin air and ask them any question, but the answers will vary and as card readings tend to go, the answers are always vague.
From the outside he looks pretty laid-back and relaxed, but really he harbours quite a bit of anxiety that his future-reading power definitely didn’t help. He’s developed a tendency to ask his cards just about any question that comes to mind, and those eye-bags aren’t just insomnia. You could almost describe it as an “addiction” to knowing; being able to know the answers to all these questions he has only makes him even more stressed out when he doesn’t know something.
A nice person who’s quite popular, nobody knows why he chooses to spend so much of his time with someone like Blaine.
Blaine
Blaine is the red haired one, and he is very rarely seen without Kase by his side, and despite his best efforts to make others think he finds Kase annoying, it’s obvious the two of them are close. I haven’t made any detailed/solo art of him, so besides this page of him and Kase no drawings of him exist yet. These drawings of Kase are older, he looks more similar to the drawing of Kase I have under his actual section.
Blaine has the ability to control animals by whistling. I was originally inspired by stories in Canada from Indigenous people, about whistling at night and creatures I won’t say the names of. I did more research on legends about whistling at night, as basically any culture refers to it as something bad and dangerous. Currently, Blaine can make animals do whatever he wants by whistling within range of them hearing. He grew up in Canada, as most of them have, and heard the stories about deer walking on their hind legs. This made him decide whenever he did his animal-controlling stuff that he would make all the animals walk around on their hind legs, to freak people out. That fact alone I feel sums up Blaine’s personality pretty well; he likes scaring people and pissing them off. It’s a hobby of his.
Blaine even being able to make a single friend is a surprise to anybody who has met him, as anybody could tell you five different times he was needlessly cruel to them or their friend. Nobody knows why he acts like this, including me. He’s a dick.
Angie
Angie is a member of the program, and enjoys being a nuisance to the staff there. She has control over her own radio station where she’ll plays songs and do little morning talks and announcements. It’s become a fun little thing that most members of the program enjoy, so staff aren’t too hard on her about it. She has the ability to create bursts of electricity and can travel through electrical currents. The program made the entire electrical system of the campus self-contained so that she couldn’t get out.
Vitri
Vitri is the leader of a group that I haven’t named yet, but is basically a collection of ex-members of the program who work together to have it taken down. He was in the first group of kids that the program was run with, a test batch to see how it would work. From 15-21 he was a member of the program, and quite a passionate one. For reasons unknown, he suddenly left the program and was nowhere to be seen for nearly 10 years, before suddenly reppearing and starting to look for people to join his cause. They believe the program is exploitative, manipulative, and abusive, and should be eradicated. When he first started this resistance, he and his members genuinely wanted to help the kids still in it, but as time passed Vitri became more destructive than helpful with his intentions.
Vitri has the ability to manipulate glass. There’s very little limits to what he can do, besides not being able to fuse glass together by himself. He lost a couple fingers when he was first learning to use his power.
Vitri takes a special interest in Varen, who he calls “one of the special ones”, a group of people with powers that go far and far beyond what a normal power can do.
Mirai
Ipvne oef poi nxppvpf xb pyeias xunvytd amza, hrq yseviz wua bwrz as oa htnna ss poi cnvkewt hrowmga alrnl freuk ak yipkyhf km lrn, kinz vv nhpzr.
Although I love all my characters, I think if I was someone reading Pandora instead of the one making it, Mirai would definitely be my favourite. She works alongside Vitri as one of the leaders of the resistance group, and is “one of the special ones” as Vitri says. She’s erratic, mysterious, and a little bit crusty. Seems to know a lot of things and a lot of people.
“J”
He currently doesn’t have a name, but is one of my newer characters and has the ability to duplicate other peoples powers. He does this by obtaining some of their DNA and dropping it into his third eye, which will change to look like that persons eye. It’s very temporary, and anything other than hair will only work for a few seconds, so he favours using hair over other items.
A jock is the best way I can describe him. He works for Vitri and was involved in the “incident” that happened a couple months before the story starts. He seems like a pretty normal guy, if gym bros can be considered normal, and is over-enthusiastic and I’m imagining horribly dyslexic. Carries around a fanny-pack kinda thing around his waist that he carries/hangs hair he’s gathered off of. Does his power ever cause him to feel like he lacks any personal identity and is useless without others?
…probably not
Some Basics
Powers are developed on someone’s birthday, within minutes of their exact time of birth. The vast majority of powers develop from 12-18, but there are some younger and older exceptions.
The other two prevalent groups in the story that I haven’t fleshed out much yet are a doomsday sort of cult, who believes the development of powers is going to lead to an apocalypse. The other group believes basically the opposite, that powers were given to special people who have a birth-given right to be leaders and think that they and other power-havers should be the one’s managing the world.
There was an incident that happened a couple of months before Varen arrives at the program and the story starts, that quite a few characters were involved in. Despite this, Varen knows basically nothing about it and most people keep their lips shut tight when asked about it.
There’s about 360 members of the program at the Trillium campus, ranging from 15-21.
While it’s true that only teenagers are put into the program, some will be put in as a teenager and age into 20 or 21 and remain there. If someone commits whatever crimes and are 20-21 but haven’t been put into the program already, they’ll be advanced into the Agency.
The Agency is similar to the Program, but holds older and usually more experienced members. They are not put into teams like the Program kids are, and do a lot more solo missions and are allowed to live amongst society. The Agency, what they do, and what their agents have done, is well known to the public, and anybody who makes it known they are apart of it are usually avoided, because as stated someone getting put into the Program and Agency is done so because they committed some sort of crime bad enough to warrant going to prison, and all of them have powers.
People with powers garner mixed opinions from people. Some think it’s unfair to treat them differently, while others think that they hold a lot more potential power than the average person does and should be monitored regularly. People whose powers affect their physical form are often subject to scrutiny.
4% of the population has powers, but that’s only an estimate and is actually higher than the recorded amount of people with powers, because it’s estimated only 3/4 people with powers have one that is either significant or discoverable enough. About 1/4 of that estimated 4% have such mundane or specific powers that they are indistinguishable from other people.
Until only recently, in Canada, if you murdered multiple people you could get multiple life sentences. In recent year, that policy was abolished because it was categorised under “cruel or unusual punishment”. In the world of Pandora, this policy is still active.
Crimes committed using powers are taken incredibly seriously, and often a fine or prison sentence can be doubled simply because the person committing it might have used their power to do it. While it’s meant to be extra incentive to stop people from abusing powers, it’s often abused in the legal world.
Thank you for reading this far, if you have! I know this is a lot, but I talk a lot about this story and I want people to be able to learn some of the basic stuff about what I’m talking about. One thing I’ve always been open to but have never really mentioned is that if you ever want to send me a drawing prompt about my own characters, no matter how mundane or extreme, I’ll always try my best to do it! People showing that sort of interest in my stuff is super cool :)

crucial part of legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom's enduring appeal for me is that every once in a while my partner will come sit down while I'm playing and I'll stop whatever I'm doing in game to tell her my opinions about Link outfits and we'll both do bits where Link interacts with NPCs in increasingly ridiculous outfits.

He adores reader to the ends of the earth, but is a bit hesitant bc he doesn't think he'd be good enough for them. Jake has no idea how into him reader really is until they get it on!
If not that's totally fine! Have an awesome day!!! >O<
You make nerd sexy... (college!hockeyplayer!Jake Jensen)
Warnings: 18+ readers only, swearing, slut shaming, horny reader, oblivious!Jake Jensen, mentions of seeing Ari's package, violence, mean!Ransom Drysdale, self-doubting, college guys being jerks
"Thanks again for the help, Jakey." You smiled sweetly at him before pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Jake smiled back, hoping the blush on his face wasn't visible to you or his hockey teammates as they watched your interaction from the sofas with knowing smirks.
"Uh, no problem, Y/n. You know I'm always here to help." He answered as he opened the frat house door for you.
"Well, I best be going-"
"DON'T FORGET TO INVITE HER!" Bucky shouted over his shoulder.
Your brow furrowed in confusion as you looked at Jake.
His eyes widened momentarily before he sent a glare towards Bucky. He cleared his throat and ran his hand up the back of his neck. "Oh, right, I almost forgot," He chuckled nervously. "We're uh, having a victory party here Saturday night, after the game. You wanna come?" He smiled at you.
Your lips stretched into a grin. "I'd love to, Jakey... Although, arranging a victory party before you've even played is very assumptious of you." You raised your eyebrow at him playfully.
He shook his head with a sigh. "It's their idea." He nodded towards the others as they watched you instead of the slutty music video that was playing on the TV.
You giggled, "Figures."
Steve gasped dramatically. "You don't think we'll win, Doll?"
"I just think it's bad luck to assume, that's all." You smiled and looked at Jake.
He nodded, "That's what I said." He rolled his eyes making you giggle. "Will, uh, you be at the game?" He asked as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Of course she'll be at the game, Jakey... Y/n's, your personal cheerleader, ain't ya', Doll." Bucky winked at you.
You nodded. "Of course I will." You smiled at Jake before looking down at your watch. "Shoot. Gotta go, Jakey... Meeting, Nat and Wanda." You leaned up and gave him one last kiss on the cheek before running out the door waving goodbye to the rest as you did.
Jake closed the door with a sigh before turning around as he ran his hand over the back of his neck.
"Pathetic." Steve muttered stopping Jake in his tracks.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard." Steve shook his head as he sat back in his seat, his attention returning to the TV.
"Leave him alone." Sam said as he stood up from the couch stretching and turned to face Jake. "But he's right."
Jake frowned at him. "About what?"
Bucky rolled his eyes with a huff. "About the sexy little kitten that practically humps your leg any time she's near you."
Jake's brow furrowed, "Who?"
"Y/N!" All the guys shouted.
"You telling me you don't see it?" Ari asked Jake with a bewildered look.
Jake shook his head and shrugged. "See what?"
"How much she's into you." Ari said. "Because she's really into you, dude."
Jake scoffed, "Don't be ridiculous. Y/n's just friendly... She's just my friend." Jake said, thinking about you.
"That you and every other guy wants to fuck." Ari smirked as he rubbed his hand over his crotch.
"I wouldn't mind getting some of that snatch." Lloyd smirked and high fived Bucky.
Jake rolled his eyes, used to the guys constantly talking about how much they'd like to fuck you. If he was being honest, he hated it but you were his friend. What could he do?
"Jake," Sam stood in front of him and put his hand on his shoulder. "That girl wants you and you need to do something about it before someone else beats you to it."
Jake shook his head. "You're being ridiculous." He pushed Sam's hand off him. "Y/n doesn't want to be with me."
"RIGHT!" Steve jumped up from the couch startling Jake. "I'm going to fuck her then."
"What?" Jake's eyes widened as he began panicking. He really didn't want Steve to do that.
"I'll see you fuckers, later." Steve winked at Jake as he walked past him and headed for the door.
"Hold up." Bucky quickly followed. "I want to fuck her too..."
"Me too." Lloyd said as he too followed Steve out of the door.
"And me." Ari grinned as he patted Jake on the shoulder.
Sam chuckled. "Told ya." He gave Jake one more pat before jogging off out the door behind the others that followed Steve.
"Where are you going?" Jake asked him.
Sam held his hands up. "I kinda want to fuck her too, man. Sorry."
Jake silently cursed himself as he closed the door, standing in the quiet frat house. He really didn't like the idea of any of his friends trying to get with you. "Damn it." He huffed and pulled the door open. "WAIT!"
------------------------------------------------------------
"Relax, would you, you look cute." Nat smiled at you as the two of you stood at the bar with Wanda.
You looked down at your outfit and smiled.
"I do, don't I?" Your brow furrowed. "So why hasn't, Jake, made a move?"
"Because he's a stupid hockey playing boy." Wanda answered making you and Nat laugh.
"Listen, if Jake's too stupid to do anything, even after all your not so subtle hints, then pick one of the other stupid hockey playing boys to fuck." Nat smiled.
You groaned. "But I don't wanna just fuck, Jake. I like him."
Wanda's brow furrowed as she rubbed your arm. "I know, sweetie, but Jake's stupid. And a girl has needs."
"Needs that any of those hockey players would be happy to fill." Nat wiggled her eyebrows making you and Wanda laugh.
"Who knows, maybe Jake would finally do something if you were to sleep with one of them." Wanda said.
You hummed. "I dunno... Who would you pick?" You asked her.
Wanda thought about it for a second. "Steve's cute I guess... And Sam..."
You nodded and looked at Nat.
She screwed her face up in disgust. "Ew, you know I prefer the cheerleaders." She winked.
You rolled your eyes with a smirk. You looked down at your drink as you thought, "... Ari."
"Ari?" Both Nat and Wanda asked shocked.
You nodded. "Ari."
"He's the complete opposite of, Jake." Wanda said.
"Exactly... And, I have it on good authority he's packing." You smirked to yourself as you played with your glass.
Nat squinted, "How do you know if Ari Levinson is packing in his pants?"
You giggled, "A few weeks ago, I was at the frat house studying with Jake, and went to use the bathroom. As I opened the door, Ari was getting out of the shower... He be packing." You smirked at her as you held your hands up to show just how big Ari was.
Wanda's mouth fell open. "God damn." She smacked the bar. "Why are you so fixed on hooking up with, Jake, then?"
"Because he's sweet and kind." You smiled, "... and as much as Ari is nice and has a big dick, he's a terrible boyfriend. Much rather put his dick in everything than commit to one pussy." You huffed.
Nat nodded and out her arm around your shoulders. "Girl, maybe you need to just let Ari do what he does, to you for a while and forget about Jake."
You nodded. "Maybe..." You sighed, "Excuse me. I need the little girls room." You said before leaving the bar.
Nat and Wanda looked after you with a sigh.
"You really think, Ari's, that big?" Wanda asked looking back at Nat.
Nat shrugged and looked towards the door. She nodded towards it, "Ask him."
You opened the restroom door with a sigh and walked back into the bar to stop when your path was blocked by one of you regrets. "Move, Drysdale."
Ransom shook his head with a chuckle. "C'mon, babygirl, don't be like that." He stepped closer and looked down the top of your dress. "Remember how good I used to make you feel?"
It's true, Ransom Drysdale, knows how to fuck. But you'd already been there and weren't interested in going back any time soon.
"Yes, and I also manage to feel the exact same with my dildo." You smiled at him as his friends laughed before pushing by. "Let go, Ransom!" You pulled your arm, trying to get out of his grip.
"You're being a brat." Ransom hissed.
"Not, intrested." You smacked his shoulder with your fist.
"Everything okay here?"
You gasped, looking over your shoulder at Ari, smiling thankful at him.
"This doesn't concern you, Levinson, back off." Ransom spat at him.
Ari glared at him, puffing his chest out and using his bulking figure to tower easily over Ransom. "It involved me the moment you started hassling this little lady, Drysdale."
Ransom started laughing. "Little lady? Dude, she's a whore."
You gasped and snatched the beer out of Ari's hand, throwing it in Ransom's face before you brought your knee up into his groin. "Fuck you, mommy kink!"
Usually you weren't one to kink shame (you had plenty yourself) but the little bitch deserved it. It was no secret you enjoyed sex (a lot), but you didn't go around sleeping with everyone you ran into. Yes, you were a whore but only for whomever you were with at the time.
Ari slipped his arm around your shoulders with a smirk and guided you away from Ransom and back to where the guys and your friends had moved to. "You owe me, Princess." He teased making you smile.
"Sorry."
He shook his head with a chuckle, "Don't worry... I can think of a few ways you can make it up to me." He winked at you making you blush.
Jake frowned as he watched you laugh with Ari. Why did it have to be him?
For the rest of the night you sat beside Ari, the two of you slowly getting drunk as you chatted and laughed with one another. At some point Ari slipped his arm around your shoulders as you rested your hand in his thigh.
"So, have you told dumbass over there about you sneaking a peak at my dick?" He asked referring to Jake, smirking as you gasped and playfully tapped his chest before giggling.
"I wasn't 'sneaking a peak', Ari." You rolled your eyes at him. "And no, I haven't."
Ari hummed. "Why not? You don't want him to know how much you drooled?" He teased.
Your eyes widened as your mouth fell open. "I did not drool!" Okay, so maybe you did a little.
Ari's head fell back with a laugh. "You so did..." He winked at you as you blushed. "Don't worry, little lady, I'm sure if dumbass over there knew, he would finally make a move."
You looked up at him with a furrowed brow and a pout. "I doubt it. It seems like everyone else can see, except him." You frowned.
Ari hummed. "I don't know how he can't see..." Ari looked down at you and began smirking. "Y'know what might make him see?"
You shook your head as you looked up at him. "What?"
Ari's smirk widened. He reached up with his free hand and pinched your chin with his thumb and index finger. He leaned in close and pressed his lips against yours, slipping his tongue in between your lips as you opened your mouth willingly. You ignored the hoots and hollars from your friends as you let yourself get lost in the kiss.
He pulled back from you with a deep breath, smirking proudly as you chased his lips. "Fancy pretending we're getting outta here and having some fun?"
You bit your lip and glanced over at Jake. He was sat glaring at the two of you.
Ari leaned in and kissed your neck. "It'll really piss him off... Might even bust the door down as I make you cum." He said with a shit eating grin.
You let out a soft laugh and slipped out of the booth, holding your hand out to him. Wanda was right, you did have needs and if Jake wasn't going to make a move then you might as well let Ari do his thing. "How far are you willing to go, Mr Levinson?"
Ari grinned and took your hand. "As far as I'm needed to, to help a friend out." He winked at you. He slipped his arm around your shoulders and the two of you began to leave the bar walking by Jake as you did. "Bye, Jakey." He winked at him.
The moment you left the bar the cold night air hit your warm skin, quickly sobering you up.
"How long you reckon before dumbass comes out here?" Ari asked as you walked down the street.
You shrugged.
Ari looked over his shoulder back into the bar and smirked as he saw Jake walking towards the door. "Trust me?" He asked you.
You laughed. "No."
Ari chuckled and pushed you into the opening of a alley nearby. He crashed his lips against yours as he held your waist. He slowly moved his left hand down your hip and to your thigh, hiking your leg over his hip as he devoured your mouth.
"Can you stop." Jake spoke from behind Ari.
You broke apart and looked towards him, Ari chuckling as he did.
"And why would I do that, Jakey? Someone's gotta look after her snatch." Ari said as he looked back at you. 'Trust me', he mouthed.
Your mouth fell open. "Jerk." You pushed on his shoulder.
Ari laughed again. "What? You know that's all this is, Princess. Your an easy fuck, everyone knows it."
"Hey!" Jake pulled on Ari's shoulder. He pushed him away from you, "Don't speak to her like that, Ari."
Ari laughed again. "C'mon, man. You didn't want her so she's far game."
"You know that's not true." Jake glared at him.
Ari scoffed. "Let a real man fuck her if you're too chicken shit."
You let out a startled gasp as Jake's fist collided with Ari's face. "JAKE!" You called out.
"Touch her again and I'll fucking kill you!" Jake turned to face you and grabbed your hand pulling you out of the alley before you could check if Ari was okay.
Jake was silent as he marched you all the way back to the frat house. "Upstairs. Now." He ordered you as he headed into the kitchen. You opened your mouth to argue as he opened the freezer and grabbed some ice. "NOW!"
You quickly ran upstairs to his room and sat on his bed, unsure what to do. You'd never seen Jake like that. He was usually so calm and collected. Even on the ice he never lost it, that's why he was such a good goalie. He focused and ready to strike at all times.
Jake walked into his bedroom, softly closing the door behind him, barely able to look you in the eye as he sat down at his desk. Silence settled between you as he held ice to his hand.
"Are you hur-"
"We're you really going to sleep with him?" Jake cut you off.
You rolled your eyes. "Of course not."
"So why leave with him?"
You huffed. "Why not? No one else was going take me home." You folded your arms across your chest. "Why do you care?"
Jake shook his head as he kept his focus on his hand.
You drew in a deep breath and stood up. "I'm tired, Jake."
Jake nodded, "I can get you an Uber or-"
"Not like that, Jake!" You huffed. "I meant with you. For months I've tried to let you know how I feel but you just brush it off. I don't know if you're too shy or just don't see or, you don't care, but I like you Jake. I really like you. But I'm tired of waiting for you to do something." You stared at Jake, waiting in silence for him to do something.
He just stared at his hand not speaking a word to you.
You closed your eyes to stop yourself crying, already feeling humiliated enough. "Fine then." You turned around to grab your bag from his bed. "I'll see you around."
"I love you."
Your mouth hung open slightly as you turned to face Jake with your eyes wide. "What?"
He groaned and dropped his head onto his desk. Shit. "I mean... I," He sat h nched over fir a few seconds as he tried to collect his nerves before he sat up and turned to look at you. "I like you too... A lot... But, I'm no good for you. I can't be with you. You're way too beautiful and smart and sexy... For a guy like me, who's a nerd and a dumb hockey player... I'm just not good enough for you, Y/n... I mean, you were going to sleep with Ari, and you were dating that Drysdale kids. I'm nothing like them."
Your brow furrowed, "Oh, Jakey," You sighed softly and walked over to him. You carefully sat in his lap taking Jake by surprise. You wrapped your arm around his neck as you smiled at him. "I know you're nothing like, Ari or Ransom, and that's why I like you. You're smart and funny, and you don't see me as a hole to fill... You've never judged me for, having a healthy appetite for sex."
Jake blushed making you smile.
"Jake," You cupped his cheek and turned his face towards you. "You're not a dumb hockey player. You're nothing like the other guys. And you're not a nerd," Jake gave you a pointed look making you giggle. "Okay, so you are a nerd, but you make it sexy." You smiled sweetly at him, making him blush even more. "And I wasn't going to sleep with, Ari. He was just... helping us out." You smiled at him. "You owe him an apology by the way."
Jake nodded. "I know." He looked down as he placed his hand on your knee.
"Jake," You whispered and lifted his gaze to meet yours. "I really like you."
Jake began grinning at you. "M'sorry I've been so dumb."
You laughed at him. "Just kiss me, Jake."
He nodded. His eyes fell your lips as he licked his lips before he closed the gap between you and pressed his soft lips against yours. His large hands gently kneaded your thigh making you moan against his mouth.
A startled shriek left you as the rest of the team barged into Jake's room, blowing party whistles. Sam pulled you off Jake's knee as some of the guys jumped up onto his bed whilst blowing their whistles. The others grabbed Jake and hauled him up off his chair. Steve, Bucky, Lloyd and Ari each grabbed a limb and began to throw him in the air like they do to each other after a victory.
"PUT ME DOWN!" Jake called out mid air looking a little green.
"This is what you get for punching me, you dick." Ari laughed.
You rolled your eyes and folded your arms across your chest. "Can you boys hurry up. I kinda wanted to suck his dick."

Damn Those Dog Tags: Part 6 - Three Little Birds
📜 just a PSA for you all that I love each and everyone one of you, and I’m so grateful this group of people bring each other up online then bring them down (for context, I had a bad experience with a social media post this past week (never again am I sharing videos of me riding)... the equestrian community can be so ruthless🤦🏻♀️) So I’m happy I can come here and feel supported.
I apologize in advance for a sad Sadie in this one. We also have a little bit of a time jump in this one!
❗️18+, strong language, angst, godmother reader/original female character, deployments, and a Sad Sadie (She needs her own warning).
#5.9k Words
Part 5 | Masterlist | Part 7
You wish you could say you weren’t expecting it to happen. That the routine of their 8 to 4 day didn’t lull you into a false sense of security. That the Saturday nights and dinners and time spent together would last forever.
But that was the deal when your friends were in the Navy. Time was a luxury only a few could afford.
And your time with them was past due.
This Saturday night was designated game night. On game nights, Sadie would rummage through the few shelves on your bookcase you set aside for games, puzzles, books and other activities to find a selection of games she thought the others would like.
You would make finger foods, and your kitchen island would be littered with big plates and trays so everyone could come and go as they pleased. Sadie would go looking for your Cards Against Humanity set, despite hiding it in a very unreachable place, and you’d race from the kitchen to snatch it out of her hands, always telling her she could play it when she was older. She’d wait for a second, then say, “Okay, I’m older.”
You'd laugh at her, and she would laugh back. Only this time, your doorbell rang.
You froze. You always left your front door open when you knew to expect them. They knew they could walk right in and make themselves at home.
Walking to the front door, you became nervous, weakly clutching the handle as you twisted, pulling it back to reveal the entire team lined up side by side, standing together on your porch. All of them together, minus Mav? It took only one look for you to know.
They had been called up.
“When?” you gasped.
“Tomorrow night,” Phoenix replied sadly. “For at least three months.”
Something sharp pierced the centre of your chest, your ears boxed, and your throat closed shut, taking you back to that Friday night at the Hard Deck with the phone call. You barely acknowledged the pain in your forearm, where you had reached up to grip it tight, fingernails biting into your skin. Your heart, thumping hard, now aching for your friends and the unbearable weight Sadie would have to carry.
If only you had had this talk with her sooner. Ridley never made it home to her that Friday night. And now she had to shoulder the knowledge her newfound family could be taken away at any moment, the difference being it was an expectation for a possible someday, not the outcome of a random accident.
You couldn’t help but crumble into the door frame, your head falling to the wood as the first sob worked its way up your throat. Nat immediately took you into her arms, hugging you tight. You wrapped your arms around her, weight sagging into her, as you realized you’d now have to learn how to cope without your friends being there for you and Sadie.
“Sadie,” you gasped into her shoulder. “How am I going to tell her?”
Nat pulled back, grabbing your cheeks. “We can do it together. She’s a lot stronger than we give her credit for.”
You huffed a laugh through your tears, Nat pressing her forehead to yours in an effort to give you the strength to ground yourself. You hated when people saw you cry.
Tearing yourself away from her, you looked to Bob, who had moved beside you. “Sadie’s going to be okay. She has you.”
Jake opened his mouth to say something but paused, mouth agape, when a voice called out from behind you.
“Aunt Liz? What’s going on?”
You stiffened, tearing yourself away from Jake’s gaze as you turned to face Sadie, wiping at your face.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, coming to stand in the open door frame.
“Bug, we need to have a chat,” your voice wavering as you spoke.
“What do you mean?” she looked from Nat, Bradley, and Jake to the rest of the team standing on your porch.
You reached out your hand, stepping forward to meet her with a sad smile. She stared up at you as she let you lead her back inside, leaving the front door open for the other to follow and taking her over into your family room.
Bradley was right on your heels, sitting beside Sadie once she settled on the couch, taking her free hand into his. Nat also followed, resting her elbows on the back cushion behind Sadie while Jake leaned against the wall, arms crossed and glancing intently between the pair of you. The others decided to hang back, letting you have your space to tell her.
“You know how the Daggers are in the Navy, right?”
Her voice was small as she replied, “Yeah?”
“Well, they need to go away for a little while. They need to go and help protect some people.”
“Okay?” she said softly.
“The thing is, Bug,” you paused, tucking a piece of her hair back behind her ear, “There’s a chance some of them might not make it back.”
She reeled back, eyes so childlike and innocent. “What do you mean?”
Feeling a tear run down your cheek, you couldn’t begin to form the words to explain that this might be the last time she saw her aunt and uncles. Just like her mom, you didn’t want to explain that this particular Saturday night might be the last chance she could spend with them.
It took her a minute, but you could see the realization on her face, your silence and tears filling in for what you couldn’t say. Her mouth dropped slightly, and her eyes started to relax from concentration. What followed was the understanding, her brow furrowing, nose scrunching up.
Then came the grief.
“No,” She cried out, bottom lip starting to quiver. “No!”
She turned to Nat, who smiled sadly at her as she started to sob. Rooster hooked his arm around her stomach, pulling her back into him. Sadie turned in his hold and buried her face in his chest. Bradley dropped his forehead to her shoulder as she cried.
"I'm so sorry, Bug."
When it came to things like this, Ridley and you decided early on you’d never sugarcoat things with Sadie. Like when you moved out when you went to school, telling her at five years old you wouldn’t be living with them anymore, but you’d be a visit, a phone call, a drive away from her. She had been upset, but she had accepted it.
Would it have been easier on her if you did sugar coat it?
She didn’t want to let Rooster go, even as Nat reached down to rub her back. Sadie openly wept, and you couldn’t do anything but sit back and watch her crumble. Looking up, Jake was still up against the wall. Only his head was bowed, eyes closed, tensing his body every time Sadie’s escalating cries filled the room.
It was intense, everyone trying to get through the game, eat dinner, and forget what would happen tomorrow.
Sadie tried her best, but even as she sat beside Rooster, she didn’t want to let go of his arm, leaning right into his body as she played the game. Bradley humoured her. If he was uncomfortable, he didn’t let on.
Bob accidentally knocked over his deck of cards onto the floor, causing everyone to laugh harder than they should. You took the moment to excuse yourself, disappearing to collect dishes and retreat into the kitchen while everyone was distracted trying to find his cards.
Plugging the drain, you turned on the tap, squirting soap into the sink, watching the dishes submerge under the rising water, gripping the edges of your counter hard until your nails hurt with the force.
It was how you were feeling. Like the world wanted to drown you with things beyond your control, and you couldn’t stay afloat. Your friends were your saving grace, next to Sadie, and now, you found yourself wondering what you might do without one of them.
“She’ll be okay, Liz.”
"I feel guilty, crying like this when you guys are going off saving the world, risking your lives.”
Jake came up behind you, placing a hand on your back. “Because you’re worried about her?”
“It’s not just her I’m worried about Jake,” you sniffed, wiping at your eyes. “God, I feel selfish.”
“Oh, is someone concerned for little old me?”
“Yes,” you exhaled. “Especially you. I’m afraid you're going to do something stupid in the air.”
“Best of the best, Liz," he reminded you. "Or aren't you forgetting who we are?"
“That’s what I’m afraid of.” You said, stepping forward to turn off the tap before turning back to face him, his green eyes wide.
“You have nothing to prove to no one, Jake. Please remember that when you are up there.”
Jake stared at you for a minute before stepping forward, grabbing your arms below your elbows to pull you to stand in front of him. You let him, too numb to protest or to react.
“The both of you are going to be alright, Liz. You're going to wake up tomorrow and carry on your day like you always do. And the day after that and the day after that. You don’t need to worry about us.”
You sniffed. "I always worry about you guys."
“This isn’t anything we haven’t already done before. And I can’t say for the others, but when I get back, you, the bug, and I are going to celebrate.”
“I didn’t scare you off?” you huffed with a smile. He scoffed, “As if.”
He watched as you shook your head, eyes downcast as you bit your lip. “Come here,” he said, pulling you into his chest, the palms of your hands coming to rest behind his shoulders and your head resting sideways on his chest. You could hear Jake’s heartbeat steadily thumping away beneath his shirt.
It did more for you than any kind words or long hug could have.
“We’ll be back to annoying you on Saturday nights and back at the bar before you know it.” He said, his voice low and his hand flexing on your back.
Despite everything you were feeling, you believed him.
The night carried on, and Sadie didn’t want to go to bed before they left. You didn’t blame her, watching as she held her sides, fighting sleep while sitting on your front porch step, only lit by the two lights on either side of your front door.
Rooster kneeled down in front of her, a hand on her shoulder, “We’ll be back before you know it, Bug.”
Natasha followed, lowering herself down next to Bradley. “You need to make sure your Aunt doesn’t burn down the house.”
Although she was sad, Sadie cracked a smile at Nat’s words. She glanced between the two of them before launching herself off the step, throwing herself between Nat and Bradley to hug them at the same time.
“I love you guys,” she said, bowing her head. Nat and Rooster pulled her closer, wrapping their arms around her to grip each other's forearms.
“We love you too, Bug,” Nat replied.
Sadie made her rounds, saying goodbye to everyone. When she made it to Jake, he kneeled down in front of her, opening his arms as she threw herself at him. He whispered something in her ear. Sadie nodded before burying her head into the crook of his neck.
You would have observed them longer had not Bob and Coyote approached you, hauling you into their embrace and reminding you to take care of yourself. As did Fanboy and Payback, who followed not long after.
Bradley had pressed a kiss to the side of your head, an arm wrapped around your shoulders, holding you close for probably what felt like minutes. Nat butted him out with her hip to tackle you into a hug, making you promise when she came home, you’d go out for drinks.
Then came Jake, standing in front of you with an apprehensive smile.
You couldn’t stop yourself, hot tears streaming down your face as you reached up to wrap your arms around his neck, pressing your face into his shoulder. Jake froze for half a second before his arms wrapped tightly around your waist.
The Daggers didn’t seem to mind the close goodbye. Maybe they were too occupied by Sadie. Or perhaps they recognized your need to say goodbye to everyone, even Jake, given your history.
“Be safe, Jake,” You whispered into his shirt. Jake squeezed you tight before pulling back, still in his arms, as he looked down at you. He stared at you for a few seconds before leaning forward and pressing his lips to your forehead, humming against your skin.
“See you soon, darlin’.”
___
Despite the long-lasting promise you and Sadie made when Ridley passed away to be there for each other, neither of you caved in the months after. However, with their absence, it went unsaid that promise would extend toward the Daggers.
It had been three weeks since they left on deployment, and Sadie had caved.
It was the same routine. She’d wake up, pick at her breakfast with red eyes, get dressed and stay silent on the way to school. When you could pick her up, she wouldn’t run to greet you at the end of the day. On weekends, she stayed quiet, barely saying a word. And the minute she finished her homework after dinner (math homework returning to being troublesome), she’d retreat to her room for the rest of the night.
She was back to the shell of the person she had been before Phoenix and Rooster inserted themselves into your lives. And even as you tried to help her, she never allowed you to see her cry. She was putting up a front and wouldn’t let you help her.
You knocked on her bedroom door. “Bug, can you please come out?”
“No,” came a muffled reply.
“Sadie Bug, please. I miss them too.”
“They won’t come back.”
“You don’t know that.”
Halloween was worse. It was probably one of the last few times she would have wanted to go out before she deemed it too childish. Instead, she curled up on the other side of the couch, watching Halloween movies as you answered the door, not even saying a word.
“Can you please come into the family room? So we can be there for each other? Maybe we could put vinyl on?”
You were met with complete silence.
“Okay,” you relented, hugging yourself. “I’ll be out here if you change your mind.”
Stepping away from her door, you treated down the hallway to your kitchen, making yourself a cup of tea before curling up under a blanket on the couch. You pressed yourself into the back cushion, cradling the steaming cup to your chest as if it would fix the pang in your chest.
You looked around. The family room table was littered with Sadie’s math homework, you staying up late at night to try and figure it out for her. If Jake were here, he’d be able to help her, you would think every time you got frustrated.
Jake.
In the few weeks he had been gone, you found yourself thinking about him at the most random of times. Making your coffee in the morning. Working at the Hard Deck, passing by the dartboard or the pool table. You had known him less than a month before he was called off, yet you felt his absence the strongest.
Sadie missed him too. And that had to count for something.
You saw her, out of the corner of your eye, half hidden behind the wall. You gave her a soft smile, lifting the edge of your blanket as an invitation. She didn’t hesitate, quickly walking forward and diving under the blanket. She curled herself into your side, legs hooked over yours, head buried into your neck as you covered her, snuggling her in tight.
Whether she was done putting up a front or the comfort was too much, Sadie started to cry in front of you for the first time since they left.
Pressing a kiss to her forehead, you said, “Your aunt and uncles are the best. I know for a fact they will do anything to make sure they can come home.”
“I want them to come home,” she whimpered into your chest. “I don’t want to lose them, like Mom.”
“You know what she’d say if she were here?”
Sadie sniffed. “She’d tell us we don’t need them.”
You snorted. “Well, besides that.”
She shook her head. Tugging her close, you replied, “She’d say we would have to keep moving forward, doing things because they can’t. I think Aunt Nat would want that for us too.”
Sadie dropped her head to your shoulder. As you threaded your fingers through her hair, an idea popped into your head, a result of the conversation you had with Penny the week prior.
“How about this?” you said, pulling back to look down at her face, wiping away a stray tear. “Aunt Penny was going to send Uncle Mav a care package. How about we see if we can send something to the Daggers? A letter? Polaroids?”
She bit her lip, contemplating what you said. “I bet Uncle Bob would want to see some of the bugs you’ve seen,” you encouraged her.
Her next words were like a punch to your gut.
“Can we send one to Uncle Jake too?”
Uncle Jake. Not Hangman, Not Jake. Uncle Jake.
It was only natural Sadie would start calling him that. Oh, Rooster and Phoenix wouldn’t be happy about this. Yet, there was a part of you that was secretly pleased Sadie had, in her own way, officially accepted Jake into the group.
He deserves a chance, right? To know people care about him?
“Why wouldn’t we send one to Uncle Jake?”
That’s how you found yourself sitting with Sadie at your kitchen table, sheets of lined paper and copious amounts of her polaroids in front of the two of you a few weeks later. She had separated a few into piles, each designated for a Dagger, with envelopes neatly labelled with call signs, all organized beside each other.
You wrote letters to each, filling them in about Sadie and placing them next to her letters on the table when you were done. Mav’s mostly included updates about Penny and Amelia, knowing he’d like to hear it from somebody else to confirm things were okay.
But when it came to Jake’s, you drew a blank. You attempted to write ‘Jake’ on the first line of several pieces of paper, trying to form that first sentence, only to get frustrated and crumple the page in your hand.
“Do you like him?” Sadie teased, grinning at your efforts.
“What?” you stuttered, looking up at her. “No, I just don’t know what to write.”
“You had no problems with the others,” she replied, spreading a group of photos in her hand like a deck of cards.
“Cause I knew what to say.”
“And you don’t know what to say to Uncle Jake?”
While you were glad to see her mood was improving, you could do without the teasing.
“It's different. He’s new to the group.”
“Yeah, he’s different,” she giggled before returning to sort through the photos in her hand. Scanning through the polaroids, Sadie spied one she had forgotten she had taken.
Something at that moment clicked in her head, her mom’s voice forming the idea from memories of overheard phone call conversations and teasing remarks while she glanced up to make sure you weren’t watching her - you attempting to start Uncle Jake’s letter once again. Picking the photo from the group, she slid it under the others in the pile before you could glance back up.
“What are you sending him?”
“Just some photos of the hike.”
“Oh, can I see them?” you asked, extending your hand to grab the photos she had put in his pile.
Sadie was quicker, reaching out and snatching them right from under your hand. She threw her hand with the photos above her head while reaching for the smaller blue envelope with Jake’s call sign with her other. She quickly pulled everything into her lap so you couldn’t see her, placing the collection of polaroids inside and hurriedly bringing the waxed edges to her lips, sealing it tight.
Her answer was final as she glared at you.
“Nope.”
____
You had no idea how Penny swung it, but with her being an Admiral’s daughter, you figured she still had some sway.
Were video chats a thing in the Navy? You had no idea, but she had come bursting through the Hard Deck doors one day while you were working, wanting your email address. When you asked her why, she replied, “Well, don’t want to talk with them?”
When would you never say no?
Sadie could not shut up about getting her own screen time with each of them, however, spread out they were. Almost bi-weekly, she was on a video chat with a Dagger. Of course, Rooster was first, followed by Natasha, Bob, Coyote, Fanboy and Payback. She even got some time with Maverick. And Jake, who still helped her with her Math homework, from god knows where, probably on the other side of the Earth.
You had to pick. While Sadie had special circumstances from Cyclone (She could hook anyone around her finger, even stone-cold Cyclone), you could only choose three.
So here you were, sitting at your desk on a cold afternoon, fiddling with the knick-knacks on your desk or organizing your pens as you glanced up every so often to find the spinning ball of death running on an endless loop on your computer.
That was until you heard his voice.
“Hey, darlin'”
The first thing you noticed about Jake when you looked up at your screen, even with his trademark smirk, was how drained he looked. Jake had dark circles encasing his eyes, his shoulders slouched, and while you found yourself admiring the cocky smile, it was a tired one.
“Oh, Jake, are you okay?”
He shook his head. “They have us alternating on early morning runs.”
You grimaced. “Rooster and Phoenix said you guys are going up a lot. More so than usual.”
“There’s a lot going on here.” You knew he couldn’t say much more on the subject, yet you still wanted to know how he was doing.
“Have you had a chance to talk to your family?” His face tensed up at your words, his eyes casing downwards before he managed a reply of, “Just my sister and her husband.”
You frowned. You knew he was speaking about Janet. When Jake told you he had an older brother and a younger sister, you thought maybe he had a somewhat supportive family. But now, it didn’t sit right with you they didn’t want to speak with him, let alone his own mother, while he was away on an active assignment.
You’d expect nothing less from his father.
“When was the last time you spoke with her?”
“Not since I went for a visit. She’s expecting her first kid in a few months.”
You were genuinely happy for him. “Jake, that’s amazing. You’re going to be an uncle.”
He didn’t look at you as he spoke, “Slightly worried about what this kid will be born into. If I’ll be good enough for them.”
You couldn't help but empathize with him. It was the same reaction you felt when Ridley asked you to be Sadie's godmother.
"If it's worth anything, you're great with Sadie. This child is so lucky to have you looking out for them."
While Jake gave you a soft smile, he didn’t reply, staring down at his lap for a few seconds before looking up and beyond the camera. You could tell he was getting lost in his own head, worrying about the future. The look on his face was one you caught yourself making in the mirror most mornings while thinking about Sadie.
Suddenly, he sighed, looking back at the screen. “For once, I’m going to say enough about me.”
You giggled at him. “Hangman not wanting to talk about himself, what is the world coming to?!”
He smiled at you. “How is the bug?”
“She’s not happy you guys won’t be home for Christmas,” you told him. “But better.”
“I got your letters. And her polaroids. What was she doing around an F-14?”
You had taken Sadie to the nearby Warplane museum in an attempt to make up for her missing her aunt and uncles, hoping it might bring her closer to them. An out-of-commission F-14 had been on display, and Sadie just had to get her picture taken in front of it. She had put herself somewhat out of the frame of the camera, leaning into the shot while holding up a peace sign and sticking her tongue out with a cheeky grin.
It was one of the first photos she had put into the pile, insistent it went to Jake. You managed to catch her writing on the back, ‘Come home soon.’
“She really wanted to send you that one,” you laughed. “We went to the warplane museum, thinking it might bring her closer to you guys.”
“The both of you need to come with me next time. Get the full experience, history, you name it.”
You couldn’t help the slow grin, your eyes widening as you exclaimed, “I knew it! Jake Seresin, you are a geek about planes!”
You watched as he leaned closer to his camera, eyebrow raised. “And here I recall somebody saying everyone was passionate about something? Flying is practically my personality?”
“Yeah, but not the tall, good-looking Naval officer who was probably a frat boy in school geeking out over planes.”
He didn’t hesitate. “So you think I’m good-looking?”
“I said good-looking, not handsome,” you shot back. “Your ego couldn’t handle it.”
“You called me handsome before.”
“I was being rhetorical, you were trying to get into my pants, calling me the ‘most beautiful girl in the bar.’” you teased him.
“I wasn’t lying.”
It took you a few seconds to register what he said. His tone was serious, leaving no room for you to come up with a witty comeback, some smart retort without sounding down on yourself. You had called him a liar then. You certainly couldn’t call him one now.
You didn’t think you were, maybe average and plain. A person who liked cozy sweaters and fuzzy socks. Who’d rather spend time curled up with a book than spend free nights out having a social life, going to a bar or partying with friends.
Everything you assumed was not Jake’s type.
Ridley would know what to say in situations like this, you thought, what to make of him telling you something like this from the other side of the world through a computer.
“What else did she send you?” you asked, changing the subject. “She didn’t let me see.”
He shrugged. “Just a few she had taken from the hike. There’s one of her and I from the picnic. I have it in my locker.”
“You mean when you stole her Sour Keys.”
There was no shame in his grin. “So worth it.”
You snickered, Jake joining you. The conversation had its natural pause, and the silence wasn’t awkward. Looking at Jake through a screen, you felt like you had permission to stare at him. Whether it was time apart, the distance, or longing. Or the fact you told Jake something so private about yourself, and he didn’t go running.
It was easier to allow yourself this moment, to entertain the possibility that maybe there was something more than the friendship you were trying to build with him before the reality set in, and you reminded yourself just why Jake was so far out of your league. Why you were just imagining things that weren’t really there.
But looking at his face, his eyes uneasy, you knew what he would ask next.
“Any news with the review?”
You shook your head, eyes fixing on your keyboard. “I called. They said maybe after the holidays.”
“Liz, it's going to be fine.”
“You don’t know that, Jake,” you said quietly, looking back up at the screen. “I still don’t know who put in the request. I haven’t been able to figure it out. Even if everything turns out fine, what’s not to say something else is going to happen?”
He paused. “Would it make you feel better if you knew?”
“Obviously, but the list is either short or non-existent.”
“Then we will figure out who when we come home.”
“Jake, you don’t...”
He interrupted you, his tone firm. “It’s Sadie.”
He was right. It was about Sadie. It was her future, knowing whether she’d be safe with you or without. You needed to know what, or who, you were dealing with.
“Okay,” you finally said. “If you don’t mind.”
He shook his head, then grinned. “Besides, the three of us have some celebrating to do when we get back.”
You couldn’t help yourself, “Just the three of us?”
His eyes lit up. “If that’s what you want.”
There weren't many opportunities in your life for you to say 'Fuck it' every once in a while. Ridley told you to fuck it when she submitted your college applications and told you to move to San Diego. When the both of you decided enough was enough and move halfway across the country to escape your lives in the aftermath of your mother passing away.
But Sadie's words rang harder than any warning the Daggers, or Penny, could have given you. Jake did deserve people in his life who cared about him. He deserved a family that cared. And the fact Rooster, Nat, and even a small part of Coyote at Sadie's soccer game that day couldn't even recognize that... it filled you with anger.
Ridley's voice was in your head, screaming Jake needs you, Lizzie. Fuck what they think.
If some of his team couldn't do that for him, if his own family couldn't, you and Sadie would.
"I do." and then, "You might have a surprise from Sadie when you get back. We miss you."
There was a shout from somewhere in the background, Interrupting Jake, causing him to turn towards the noise before looking back down at the screen, “I gotta go, darlin.”
It was true you, you did miss him. And yet, while you were grateful for the minutes you got to speak with him, you still were left feeling like it wasn’t enough.
“Be safe, Jake. Come home.”
You caught Coyote’s voice just before the video cut off, not thinking much of it.
“Yo, did you tell her about the photo in your cockpit?!”
----
It was a few weeks after your call with Jake you found the courage to start looking through some of Ridley’s things. You had no idea where it came from. The storage locker hadn’t been touched since you brought Sadie home - Rooster, Phoenix, and yourself having played a game of Tetris to shove everything in.
You always had some excuse for not going through it. You were too tired. Other things took priority. You’d do it tomorrow. There wasn’t enough time.
Really you should have called it for what it was.
You simply weren’t ready.
But with Sadie’s first Christmas without Ridley only a few weeks away, you needed to buck up and open that door. If not for you, for Sadie’s sake.
You asked Alyssa to join you one day while Sadie and Will were at school. She was more than happy to provide the support, knowing how hard it was for you. Even as she followed you down the rows of lockers, the layout making you feel like you were in a prison cell, awaiting your sentence at the end of the hall, she was a welcome reminder you could do this.
But you hesitated when you reached that yellow door, big bright numbers taunting you from their perch above.
“You don’t have to do this,” Alyssa placed a hand on your shoulder.
You shook your head. “Yes, I do. It’s time, even if it's something small.”
Oh, you wished you could take those words back the moment you saw everything. It was overwhelming to reach the bottom of the roll-up door and pull it up, revealing the numerous boxes and garbage bags of your sister and Sadie’s things. It even smelled like her in there, the small traces of her floral perfume hitting your nose, making your stomach turn.
There in the back corner, you spied a box labelled ‘Sadie X-mas”. You zoned in on it like it was a lighthouse in a storm. Just the Christmas decorations, you thought, then you could get out of here and go home.
But another box was stacked on top of it, way higher than it should have been, with various folders hanging precariously out of it. It wouldn’t be easy to get it out.
You stepped between two boxes, weaving your way to the back of the locker. Something sharp caught on the laces of your shoe, yelping as you twisted backwards onto a garbage bag of clothing, arm flinging sideways, knocking the tower of boxes over.
Alyssa shouted your name, charging forward to get to you in a last-ditch effort. Bracing yourself, you covered your head with your arms as boxes toppled into you. It hurt, sharp corners and heavy objects hitting your stomach and arms in such a way you knew you’d bruise.
Pushing boxes away, you could see her standing over you, pulling at loose objects that were pinning down your hips. The tension in her shoulders relaxed when she realized you were okay.
“God, you weren’t kidding when you said you were a klutz,” she huffed.
You rolled your eyes, holding out your hand. “A little bit of help, please?”
Alyssa pulled you up somewhat dangerously, your foot slipping on a piece of paper as you regained your balance.
The contents of the boxes were scattered across the storage locker, mostly papers and random notes. You’d sooner leave than start the process of cleaning them up while having to rifle through the spaces between the boxes. But Alyssa was already making the effort, gathering whatever was closest to her and placing them in the overturned box nearby.
Groaning, you forced yourself to collect what you could, only searching for specs of white in your peripheral vision, not the words on said boxes or stopping to consider what might be in them. You were almost done, spying two more pieces of paper lying on top of another garbage bag shoved into the corner.
Then Alyssa gasped.
You looked up to see her holding a piece of paper from a notebook in both of her hands. The page looked like it had been folded over in such a way it appeared to be a letter.
“Lyssa? What’s wrong?”
Wide-eyed, she looked up, holding it out to you. “You need to read this. Seriously.”
You reached out timidly, taking the paper from her as your eyes skimmed the page. You recognized the handwriting, though you couldn’t place where. The date in the upper corner was marked a few weeks before Ridley died, and you thought you saw Sadie’s name mentioned a few times, though it was difficult to make out.
But as soon as you reached the bottom of the page, you shrieked, jolting and throwing the paper out of your hands.
There, signed clear as day…
Let me know.
Tyler.

Hello I come here with more jmj hcs this time fluffy edition lets go 🫡
-jm blows raspberries on mj tummy, and mj loves it obviously, jm loves hearing her laugh.
-whenever they hug or cuddle while laying or sitting down, jm kicks her feet out of excitement like a little kid, whenever it happens mj can't help but chuckle wondering how did she manage to fall in love with such a dork (how could she not).
-whenever jm is in the mood to annoy mj, she leaves a wet sloppy kiss on mjs cheek to leave her face full of saliva (mj acts even more annoyed after the kiss but she actually loves getting kisses from jm, she tries to do the same kiss on jms cheeks but instead of getting annoyed jm starts getting all giggly and smiley and looks at her with lovey dovey eyes)
-jm calls mj a lot of nicknames, like minjeongie, puppy, my love, baby (jagi and aegi), honey, princess, my queen, pretty girl, wifey, winty, while mj only calls jm with a few nicknames like jiminie, rina, unnie, baby or honey (im sure she calls jm honey and not baby since she is the babiest out of the two 😭) but most of the time she doesn't really use pet names except for certain occasions when she feels like it or when she really needs to express her love or her comfort to jm
-jm big spoon mj small spoon (we all knew this from a mile away)
-mjs favorite place in the world to be in is the embrace of her unnie's strong arms, and jms favourite place in the world to be in is nestled in mjs chest because hearing her heartbeat is relaxing and helps her fall asleep or calm down when she is anxious (she also loves being in her chest because touching the woobies is her top remedy for depression and anxiety, as she probably would say; a woobie a day keeps the doctor away!!)
-whenever mj is anxious or needs to fidget with something, if jm is cuddling on top of her (we all know she loves feeling jms body weight on her) she will start lightly patting jms butt like some sorta bongos and will even start mumbling "pa pa para ta ta" with the rythm of the pats, jm also finds this relaxing and will even mumble to the rythm with mj
-jm once drew herself a thin moustache and glued back her tied up hair like crazy and started acting like a butler for mj as a dare from a game with gigi once, she made mj food and gifts and called her mademoiselle with a really bad french accent for the entire day, mj was confused at first but she loved how handsome jm looked in a button up shirt and formal pants and how she got pampered for the entire day, lets just say that by the end of the day mj ended up rewarding jm for all of her pampering and jm got some love too (her mademoiselle ate her real good that night), also both gigi and nn filmed videos of jm doing the whole dare and now use it as a form of blackmail whenever jm doesnt want to do the housechores (they threaten to send the videos to ryujin and yeji)
Anywayss this was long af maybe i will post nsfw hcs next or just regular hcs and also i would love to see headcannons from other anons or from nat so lmk what yall think!!
yasss i love every single one of this so much especially jm blowing a raspberry on mjs tummy (this is something i daydream about too hehe) and jm calling mj mademoiselle like her goofy ass would def do that whenever she pours wine for her too<3<3 thank you for this!!

how to watch baseball now: a primer
This is a long, hopefully-comprehensive guide on how to watch baseball for hockey fans feeling adrift during the offseason — I have constructed this from the perspective of not only how to understand what you’re watching, but how to make it interesting to yourself.
If the numbers aren't interesting to you, forget about the numbers! They don’t have to exist in your version of baseball. Make up your own rules and use them to watch the game. Watch games only for the one kind-of okay player you like. Pick your favourite team because of a video you saw of one of them bouncing a baseball off his ass (Sean Murphy, then of Oakland A's and now of Atlanta Braves). Baseball Olds will try to pretend like the game is this big thing that only people who already watch it can appreciate, but you just have to find what you love most about it.
I’m using the NHL as my best point of reference: in terms of growing the game, I’d say MLB suffers from a very different problem than NHL (other than like, the current uproar around letting queer people exist, which is a throughline in both), in that while the NHL has a very exciting product but can’t reach people where they’re at, baseball is by and large perceived as a boring, slow game and the league will bend over backwards to make polarizing changes to the Boringest and Slowest parts rather than capitalizing on what excites fans about the game. However, both leagues are plagued by Shitty Commissioner disease. Such is the way of life.
Feel free to read all of this, or none of it, but I’ve tried to split it up in a way that makes sense and is easy to navigate. Last note: many people will tell you baseball is the only major sport going on in North America at this time of year. This is false. The WNBA and NWSL are both in full swing—not to mention the World Cup next month. Supplement your baseball watching with a wide variety of sports where you can!
How to Love Baseball
Pick a Team, Any Team
The first step in becoming a baseball fan is obviously picking a team! I could probably give you NHL comparatives and let you figure it out from there, but I don’t personally think your favourite NHL teams have much bearing on your favourite MLB ones, so I’ll give you a quick and dirty rundown of my teams instead and how you might want to pick a team.
The easiest team for me to love is the Seattle Mariners because I live just across the border, and they aren’t good enough to be annoying but also not bad enough to be embarrassed about. They’re just kind of there, which I enjoy greatly. I also love the Philadelphia Phillies because they’re my friend’s favourite team. They went on a Cinderella run to the World Series last year (before losing to the Astros in the final) and are now solidly middling. My other favourites are the Washington Nationals because of their fantastic social media presence and their hilarious stadium traditions. The current-day Nats are very much the epitome of "how can we lose when we're so sincere?"
Some teams you might want to look into are the LA Angels (actually of Anaheim) for Shohei Ohtani, the Milwaukee Brewers for — at least from what I understand — their boyband energy similar to the New Jersey Devils, the Baltimore Orioles or Tampa Bay Rays for an exciting and winningest team, and the Oakland A's for a miserable fan experience including horribly dysfunctional team management and a coming relocation to Las Vegas.
The easiest team for me to hate is the Toronto Blue Jays, which is a result of their god complex re: being the only Canadian team. A funny thing from this season is that the Rays opened their season with a historic 13-game win streak, only to be killed 6-3 by the Blue Jays to end it. Something about Toronto teams and ending another team’s 13-game heater, or whatever.
Also look into any local teams if you can. In Vancouver, our local minor league team is the Vancouver Canadians, and setting up a little picnic on the grass with friends while watching a Canadians game is a summer staple. Here’s a very cute article about them. There are a variety of lower-level and exhibition teams across the world, especially in countries where baseball is incredibly popular. One exhibition team is the Internet-famous Savannah Bananas who are dearly loved on TikTok. If there isn’t a huge baseball foothold in your area, it’s worth looking into which MLB teams are most popular where you live and/or have the most coverage. Some analytics sites like FiveThirtyEight will occasionally create maps showing each team’s popularity in different states, countries, etc. and that can be a great guide.
Petty Rivalries 101
You can always just Google these, but I decided to just list off a few major ones for your perusal: the Yankees and Red Sox, the Rangers and Astros, the Dodgers and Giants, and the Orioles and Nationals. As Toronto Maple Leafs scholar Acting the Fulemin once put it, the point of sports is to be sad in a group, and the counterpart to this is that it absolutely rules getting to see a team you hate lose.
A quick note on the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is that it's brought us one of my favourite ever quotes from ex-Mariner and current Yankee Nestor Cortes:
Once you’ve chosen a favourite team, they’re bound to have some kind of geographic or historic rivalry, and you can search those up to find out the background behind them. Also, I highly suggest deciding on a random team you hate for no reason. It makes the season experience much more interesting and gives you the chance to pray on their downfall whenever possible.
Where to Watch
As with most things about baseball, this will vary by your team. Depending on your cable package, you might be able to watch your favourite team already! That’s great news. Even if you can’t, feel free to turn on the TV, find a random baseball game, and imprint on either of those teams like a baby bird. The MLB website offers games broadcast with an MLB.tv subscription, but if you have an account you can also watch the Free Game of the Day and collected highlights from previous games! This is a great way to expand your team repertoire and figure out which team broadcasts you hate with a burning passion. Local radio stations do commentary on games if you like listening to that.
If you just want to get your feet wet rather than diving in straight away, pretty much every major game of the postseason will be uploaded by some “FirstName BunchOfNumbers” user on YouTube: for example, you can watch Game 1 of the World Series last year by just searching 2022 World Series Game 1 Full Game. However, watching the full game might be a slog if you don’t know what’s going on, and you can learn the intricacies of the sport without having to watch all four hours and twelve minutes of like, the 1962 World Series Game 7 (although that is a very exciting game). In that case, skip to the ‘How the Game is Governed’ section and read on.
All of this pertains to MLB teams, but there’s plenty to watch elsewhere. If you have a local baseball team, you might be able to catch a game or two in-person! Minor League Baseball also has their own broadcasting services and highlights are available on YouTube or their website.
League Structure
The MLB season is 162 games long. Spring training, aka the preseason, begins in February. During the regular season, teams play a three or four-game series with the same team before playing another with a different team. For example, this month the Philadelphia Phillies played 3 games in a row against the Washington Nationals on consecutive days. The day after the conclusion of their last game against Washington, they started a series against the Tigers, which was three games with one rescheduled due to weather, and then another three games against the Dodgers. This leads to a schedule that looks like this:
Occasionally, due to weather issues or other postponement reasons, a game will be rescheduled for the same day as another game against the same team — so they’ll play two full games in one day. This is called a double-header. They used to be routinely scheduled in MLB, but now they’re only played as a result of scheduling problems.
Team-wise, it’s a little more complicated than the NHL. Like the Eastern and Western conferences, MLB is separated into two ‘leagues’: the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). Both leagues have fifteen teams, and until the 1990s teams in different leagues didn’t play each other during the regular season at all, leading to different styles of play, tactics, and rules implemented between them. This is no longer the case! However, it’s important to recognize that unlike the NHL, NBA, NWSL, etc., Major League Baseball comprises two leagues, rather than two conferences of the same league. This matters because individual awards like the Cy Young or Gold Glove are given to the best players at their position in both the AL and NL, and the MLB MVP includes both an AL MVP and NL MVP.
MLB is made up of six divisions, with three in each league: AL East, AL Central, AL West, NL East, NL Central, and NL West. A division has five teams. If you know much about US geography, you might notice that the teams in each division don’t actually correspond very well to their geographic location: this is for a variety of reasons, not least of which is expansion teams requiring change in division partitioning, but nobody’s going to fix it at this point. And that’s okay!
Fandom and Things As Such
Baseball fandom, regrettably, is not much of a Tumblr phenomenon these days, but Baseball Twitter does have some incredible gems. The Baseball RPF tag on AO3 is also fairly fleshed out (albeit not to the extent of HRPF) and you’ll find that many authors who write HRPF have dabbled in baseball as well. If you’re lost on where to start choosing a team, going through the AO3 grab bag and choosing a random player who you really like in a fic is also a very respectable avenue.
I cannot stress this enough: the easiest way to learn the game without having to learn the characters is reading baseball AUs. That’s it. They’re ten times more approachable than trying to memorize everyone on your favourite team’s roster, and they abound in HRPF if you’re looking for a landing port. I have witness testimony from Lil (@wymgreenteam) that she learned what pitching signs and shortstops were from the wonderful Jack/Nico baseball AU. It works! Obviously fanfiction won’t teach you everything, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed they can be a fantastic first step and really illustrate the game from a fan perspective.
Other Media
I will caution against taking the ‘consume baseball-related media’ advice too seriously, because I find that unlike baseball AUs, other media involving baseball does not always come from someone who watches and loves the game. Think of it like hockey romance books—just like the main characters of those novels are probably not scoring hat tricks in 5 consecutive games, they probably aren’t reaching such baseball heights either.
With that said, I have not watched Daiya No Ace but I’ve heard that people do enjoy it! For genuine baseball culture-oriented media, Roger Angell wrote fantastic articles and books on the game. I love his book ‘Five Seasons: A Baseball Companion.’ Then there are movies like Moneyball and shows like A League of Our Own which tackle specific aspects of the game and how it’s played. Depending on your eventual favourite team(s), hometown coverage will also play a huge part: for the Phillies, that’s outlets like the Philadelphia Inquirer or Penn Live.
Narratives
Once upon a time there was a young man named Shohei Ohtani who was breaking records set in the 1920s while playing on a horrible, failing team that refused to build around him. I assume you have some familiarity with Ohtani, but he is very difficult to describe because he is literally making history. He is the only two-way player in MLB right now: a two-way player is someone who is both a pitcher and a batter; there are a ton of rules about what constitutes a two-way player, but currently Ohtani is the only true two-way player at the Major level. This is not a perfect analogy, but he’s sort of like if Jason Robertson went out there and had a 50-goal season, then immediately jumped into net and played like Juuse Saros. He’s the best all-around player in MLB, and even though he isn’t the best pitcher or the best batter, the fact that he’s incredible at both of them makes him stand out. He also plays with Mike Trout, who’s breaking records of his own, while trying to drag the LA Angels to any sort of notoriety. Here is a prescient article about the Ohtani-Trout era in Anaheim.
Each team has their own current narratives and pairings, but Ohtani and Trout are the biggest one right now. People compare them to McDavid and Draisaitl, but it’s more like if the Oilers had McDavid and Draisaitl but were also one of the worst teams in the league right now. However, Trout is currently in the worst slump of his career while the Angels have won the last 11 of 14 games, so really all this means is that baseball is fake.
Baseball is rife with redemption and villain arcs—you just have to dig a little to find them. I have presented the Ohtani and Trout trainwreck because it’s the closest comparable to the Oilers tragedy, but there are plenty others that really depend on team and current events.
Bush Leagues
MLB teams have a very different relationship to their minor-league affiliates than NHL teams do. There are about five hundred various regional minor leagues, but the MiLB levels are Rookie, Single A, High A, Double A, and Triple A, each of which has two or three individual leagues similar to the AL-NL system in MLB.
The fun thing about MiLB is that it’s a lot closer to home than MLB! Most places don’t have an MLB team, but there’s a good chance anywhere in the USA has a nearby MiLB or regional/collegiate league team. They also have way more interesting names, like the Portland Pickles, Rocket City Trash Pandas, and Sugar Land Space Cowboys. The prospect pipeline in MLB runs a whole lot slower than it does for the NHL, and generally through those Double or Triple-A affiliates, so it’s definitely worth paying attention to minor-league teams and their standout players to see who might be the next rookie on your favourite team.
MiLB player compensation has been an issue for a long time, and the players recently unionized! A few great write-ups on it: 1, 2, and 3.
Regional Popularity
I’ve said this plenty, but I truly do think that finding your baseball niche hinges upon imprinting on a hometown team or a player you just really like. This sport isn’t just an American pastime: it’s hugely popular in Central America and parts of East Asia, and some of the best and brightest up-and-coming (and current) players hail from countries that haven’t traditionally been viewed as bastions of baseball. The game is growing every day, and it’s wonderful to see.
Baseball is very popular in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Japan, and Korea. Out of those, I’d probably say the Dominican Republic has the largest MLB presence, with only American players outnumbering Dominican ones in the league, but the sport is also fast-growing in Japan, Korea, and Australia. Japan won the 2023 World Baseball Classic, which is the baseball equivalent of the World Cup of Hockey, where the best players in the world compete against each other and Shohei Ohtani (captain of the Japanese team) pitched to Mike Trout (captain of the American team) in possibly the most electric moment of baseball in the 21st century.
How to Understand Baseball
How the Game is Governed
Rather than doing a big writeup on this, I figured I would just find some articles and videos that go through the rules well and hold your hand through it! Think of these like helpful assets, similar to the first time you search up ‘what is goaltender interference’ or 'what is offsides' after hearing it mentioned on the play-by-play and a goal got turned over and all the fans were mad and you wanted to be in on the reason why. This is that search.

Rules Glossary | MLB - PDF Version
Lastly, once you’ve got a good grasp on the rules and positions, I probably wouldn’t go straight to watching a full game—you want to make sure you’re using your three hours well rather than staring at a game you don’t really get or don’t care about, or both. Instead, watch YouTube highlights of various players and best (or worst) plays of the week! This gives you an idea of what creates excitement in a game and why, and different positional strengths. From there, you can start watching longer clips, like full innings or the highlights uploaded after each game, which give you a better idea of the game’s pace.
Pressing Play
While I was writing this I remembered that a fun and unique baseball tradition is players having walk-up songs when they’re up in the batting lineup.
Most teams will post their players' walk-up songs on Spotify, YouTube, etc. and while there are a few songs that are synonymous with legendary players - like Mariano Rivera's "Enter Sandman" - players usually like to switch up their songs. Often, a song will become emblematic of an era in that team's history (Anthony Rizzo's "Intoxicated" and the Cubs' 2016 playoff run). After a while, you'll notice patterns in what players pick.
Learning about each player’s song rotation can be extremely revealing, like Mark Canha switching his walk-up songs to Born This Way, Vogue, and I Wanna Dance with Somebody in honour of the Mets Pride Night last week!
Diamond Sports Bankruptcy
I’m not going to pretend to know anything about broadcasting or RSNs, but Diamond Sports, the group that runs Bally Sports, recently filed for bankruptcy, which has really affected some franchises’ profit margins and where their games can be streamed. Not sure if this interests you, but you can read about it here!
The Oakland A’s Relocation
Again: I’m not an Oakland fan, but there’s a lot of debate right now about the owners of the Oakland Athletics moving the team to Vegas despite the wishes of the town and city. Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, also made rude comments about Oakland fans as a result of their Reverse Boycott Night, where almost 28,000 fans came out to support the team. A professional sports league commissioner acting like an asshole to fans of a small-market team is nothing new, but it’s the culmination of a lot of drama between terrible owners and a market that loves their team.
The Long, Storied History of Cheating
The long, storied history of cheating in MLB encompasses not only stealing signs and tipping pitches, but also foreign substance usage on hands (which pitchers sometimes try in order to change how they pitch the ball), illegal equipment, and more. It’s kind of a lot. The most notable, recent case is the 2017 Houston Astros World Series Win.
Houston’s Fucking Astros
Nobody likes the Astros except Astros fans. They won the World Series last year and are universally hated, not least of all because of the 2017 cheating controversy.
In baseball, ‘signs’ are what catchers use to communicate to pitchers what kind of pitch they should throw. These rely on knowledge of the hitter currently on the plate and catching them by surprise. Each pitcher-catcher battery will usually have their own signs. In 2017, a year in which Houston won the World Series, the team set up a video camera in the center field seats with a full frontal view of the catcher, and they would use that to figure out what pitches the pitcher would throw. Then from the dugout, whoever was watching the video feed at the time would use a signal (audio cues, like banging garbage can lids) to tell the hitter who was up what pitch they had to expect. This was mostly possible because of the time delay between a catcher signalling and a pitcher throwing, which has been changed by this season’s pitch clock implementation.
In 2020, The Athletic published the first exposé article about the Astros cheating scandal, and it rocked the baseball world. Several immediate consequences followed: the Astros GM and field manager (head coach) were suspended for the full 2020 season, and although players received no punishment, the team gave up four draft picks (their 1st and 2nd round picks in 2020 and 2021).
Pitching and Sticky Stuff
Pitchers applying foreign substances on their hands is always a controversy in MLB games. Recently, star pitcher Max Scherzer was ejected and suspended 10 games after an umpire decided his hand was unusually sticky. TLDR: cheating is common, and consequences vary. Nobody has gotten over the Astros cheating scandal.
Expected By Whom
A quick rundown on the analytics side of the game and how baseball stats look very different both in their progress and insights than hockey. This is how you can sound like you know ball.
The Moneyball book does a great job explaining the rise of sabermetrics (baseball analytics) in the early 2000s, starting with Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s. Because MLB doesn’t have a salary cap and their luxury tax isn’t difficult for big-market teams to pay, small-market teams like Oakland have to constantly innovate in their game tactics in order to stay competitive, and that’s why the game today is so numbers-oriented. Watching a baseball game, you’ll see far more stats than you would in an NHL broadcast: OBP (On-Base Percentage), ERA (Earned Run Average), pitching speed, slugging percentage, pythagorean win percentage, and more. Do not fear the big numbers. You don’t have to know what every stat means in order to love the game, but if you watch enough and you hear commentators discussing what, say, Kodai Senga's ERA is, you’ll come to learn what they mean! In a pinch, you can also easily just search up ‘league average [stat]’ to figure out what the standard is.
Some websites that are really instrumental in baseball analytics are Baseball-Reference, FiveThirtyEight, and FanGraphs, plus YouTube channels like Foolish Baseball and statisticians like Bill James and Tom Tango. Baseball is a lot further along in its analytics revolution than hockey, and as a result, such analysis is not just a thing for Stats Nerds but also a huge part of the way the game is played and watched today. Personally, I love stats that assess umpire accuracy in calling strikes, and so Umpire Scorecards on Twitter is one of my favourites.
It's Too Long and Too Much Money
If Connor McDavid played in Major League Baseball and was close to the kind of player he is in the NHL right now, he would be getting paid north of 400 million dollars, not to mention endorsement money. Instead, he sold his soul to a sport where reporters ask about his biological clock and his only consolation for living in Edmonton is his heated driveway.
Because MLB payrolls are so much larger than the NHL’s and they have a luxury tax rather than a salary cap, contracts are worth much more. The sport itself is less volatile as well: both a product of the longer season (larger sample size) and the luck factor inherent in chance-based games like hockey that isn’t present as much in baseball, a player's year-to-year performance is easier to predict and therefore teams feel more comfortable betting on their production. In contrast to the NHL’s 8-year limit & penalty for long contracts (like the Kovalchuk deal), and bridge deals made when a player hasn't demonstrated that their performance is sustainable, MLB GMs often give their stars contracts over 10 years, and for hundreds of millions of dollars total. Mike Trout is on a 12-year contract for almost $430 million, and by several estimates, his endorsements and the money he receives for being named All-Star, AL MVP, etc. brings that up significantly.
MLB front office terminology is very similar to the NHL, but their contracts differ in another important way: baseball players can opt out of a contract and enter free agency. For example, last season Carlos Correa agreed to a 12-year, $310m deal with the New York Mets, but the Mets were worried about the results from his physical and his injury history, so they pulled out of the deal before the season began and instead, Correa signed with the Minnesota Twins on a six-year, $200m contract.
The Used Boy Auction
Drafting in MLB works very differently than the NHL. The amateur draft (the Main one, which is also called the Rule 4 Draft) takes place mid-season and lasts 20 rounds (used to be 40), plus picks that teams are given as compensation for other events. Teams can draft players either out of high school or college baseball—while the majority of players in the early days were picked right out of high school, nowadays the largest percentage are collegiate players. High school players are only eligible after graduation, and they don’t have junior leagues like the OHL or USHL. Players at universities can only be drafted after their 3rd season there in order to avoid going to a university only for drafting purposes.
Teams retain the rights to sign the players they draft until July 15 of the following year, and a player who does not sign with their team is eligible to be signed once again as long as they meet the age and educational requirements (attending an academic institution, three years of college, etc.) Unless the player has consented to be re-selected by their old team, they cannot be chosen again in another draft year. This leads to players like Brandon Belt having been drafted three times, by the Red Sox, Braves, and Giants, and ultimately playing for the Giants after his college career.
The Rule 5 Draft is another major part of the MLB drafting system. It's sort of similar to what happens in the NHL with an expansion draft, but it takes place in the winter every year. As the MLB prospect pipeline moves slower and it's easy for teams to Stockpile high-quality prospects and bury them in the minors due to the team's current success, this draft aims to ensure that young players have a chance to play in the bigs on a team that needs more manpower. Not every team has to select a player in the Rule 5 draft; last season, 15 players were taken, including the Nats selecting Thad Ward and the Phillies selecting Noah Song.
Here's the official MLB description of the drafting process:
Podcasters or Whatever
My most toxic trait is that I unfortunately love listening to sports podcasts, so here are some good baseball ones:

I hope this serves as a useful first step! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or want to yell about baseball - I wrote this for two people, so if either of those two people find it helpful, the three hours I spent on it will have been worth it.
