thinking about narrator jughead. thinking about how in the first (or maybe second idk) episode of season one he said “to someone on the outside, peering in, it would’ve looked like there were four people in that booth. but i was there, and i can tell you. really, there were only three.”
AND THEN i’m thinking about how after the time skip he’s the only one who keeps their promise and returns to the booth. then it’s only ONE person in that booth, and jughead is only in the booth when they’re not, and he’s not in the booth when they are.
thinking about how. like. jughead will always be on the outside looking in because he is the narrator. he will always be excluded, whether that means not being there when everyone else is, or being there when no one else is.
#riverdale#jughead jones#jughead#narrator jughead#i think about him so much it makes me crazy#he’s the narrator but HES IN THE NARRATIVE#riverdale is just. idk. the best show ever made?

season 5 of riverdale is great because it really puts you in a “there’s no way the town’s not winning this one they will never beat the town” mindset then when they start fighting percival in season 6 all together you go wait a second... town loss? and THEN they send them to the 50s in 7 and you’re like wow okay town win in a BIG way they’re never beating the town from the 50s BUT THEN they start acting gay and horny and fully integrated and there’s angel tabitha congratulating them on correcting the moral arc of the universe and narrator jughead has not been coming into work as much and you’re thinking oh yeah sure town loss they beat the fucking town it’s over for the town now (in 1955) right? WRONG. die and go to pop’s

if you had to base a new riverdale season off three movies, which would you choose and why? they could be tonal choices or you can pluck entire elements of the movies and work them in.
One theme of the season is (un)reality, with plots loosely inspired by World on a Wire with a touch of Videodrome. The latter would be emulated in its vibes more than its plot. Regarding World on a Wire, they'd realise they're trapped in a narrative instead of a computer simulation (But can they escape? Can you ever truly escape? Doesn't escape from the narrative equal death? Do they WANT to escape??)
One episode is called "The Archie Show" in direct reference to The Truman Show and features the voice of the creator (RAS) directly communicating with the characters at some point.
I know you said three but also if I got to pitch even just an episode of Riverdale, there would be a Chucky reference somewhere in there because I still can't believe they never did one. Also I made up a The Devil's Carnival musical episode for season 5 that doesn't work with this concept, I just wanted to mention it.
#asks#anon#riverasks#Also very important here: distinction between narrator and author#Jughead is the narrator - he is not the author. He is shaped by the narrative. He has a special place in it but he is still serving it#An episode later in the season would be called World on a Wire btw#oh also one episode is called Butterfly Kisses

my character/movie-based playlists:
arthur fleck (joker, 2019): 60's music that i felt really encapsulated arthur and his mental state in the first film.
joker: folie à deux (2024): i actually really like this movie and idk why people hate it so much, so i made a playlist that i think harley and arthur would've listened to together if they had ended up living together
beautiful boy (2018): songs that i feel represent both Nic and his father. rlly tragic, sorry.
chandler bing (friends, 1994): playlist i made right after matthew perry died (r.i.p. to a legend). i think chandler would love these songs and some of these songs are canon.
the substance (2024): not the kind of playlist you're thinking about. It's basically just 80's music that i think would be played during an old episode of 'Sparkle Your Life!'. It's basically just a glorfied jazzercise playlist.
charlie kelmeckis(the perks of being a wallflower, 2012): my idea of what charlie would have on his mixtape. Some songs are canon from the movie and book.
dead poets society (1989): a collection of songs that i think really reflect the vibe of the film for me, not necessarily songs that would fit the time period.
donnie darko (2001): playlist that shows donnies declining mental state in the film.
mr.robot (2015): songs that i think elliot would enjoy but also describe his descent.
fight club (1999): songs for the narrator and how he feels during his 6 month bout of insomnia. this playlist is my personal favorite bcs i'm also an insomniac (twinning)
the bear (2022): songs that i think carmy would listen to while yelling "behind!" at his chefs.
you (2018): songs that describe joe goldberg from you, not necessarily stuff he would like (he's much too pretentious to enjoy olivia rodrigo).
pearl (2022): a playlist that reminds me of the monologue scene in pearl where she says "i don't feel...well" because i really felt that. once again, not necessarily songs that match the time period or the characters potential interests.
lady bird (2017): lady bird is one of those movies where i'm pretty sure the director was in my house monitoring my daily movements for inspiration. naturally, i needed to make a playlist that i think completely captures the feeling of growing up with a not-so-healthy relationship with your mother.
gone girl (2014): a playlist based on the "cool girl" monologue and how it feels to feel forced to play a caricature of a woman just to for a man.
gone girl (2014): this time it's a nick dunne inspired playlist because unfortunately i relate to him (more so, book version nick). take that info how you will.
miles morales (spider-man: into the spider-verse, 2018): best spider-man, idc. ~ él es el mejor spider-man, no me importa.
jughead jones (riverdale, 2017): songs that i think jughead would have loved.
american psycho (2000): a mix of songs that patrick bateman would listen to in his headphones on his way to work and songs that i think describe him.
the iron claw (2023): songs that represent the tragedy of the story of the von erich family but also the beautiful bond of the brothers. Once again, these are not all time period accurate.
black swan (2010): a playlist based on nina. lots of swan references in the titles.
taxi driver (1976): a mix of songs based on the time period, things that travis bickle would listen to while driving, and songs that encapsulate the movie.
nightcrawler (2014): songs that represent lou bloom, not necessarily songs he would listen to because i don't actually believe he would listen to music on his own.
peeta mellark (hunger games, 2012): ,ovies i think peeta would either enjoy, or capture his personality and plight throughout the movies.
may december (2023): i love this movie SO MUCH, so i ofc had to make a dedicated playlist. it's through the perspective of joe ofc.
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004): playlist based on the rocky relationship between clementine and joel.
mother (2020): for those who don't know, this is a japanese film based on a true story about a toxic mother and her relationship to her son. so this playlist is based on the perspective of the son, shuhei.
clay jensen (13 reasons why, 2017): playlist that clay would listen to in between tapes.
prisoners (2013): unsettling and melancholy playlist inspired by this film and the perspective of detective loki, one of the main characters.
sam evans (glee, 2009): another one of my favorite playlists bcs i'm just so proud of it. like, absolutely sam would love this playlist. i included some glee versions of songs he sang, but only ones that i liked better than the original.
sound of metal (2019): songs that i feel express ruben's reaction to his deafness and his struggle to accept change.
troy bolton (high school musical, 2006): i absolutely LOVE this franchise and so i think i'm qualified to say that troy bolten would love himself some 2000's rnb. This is why i've taken upon the burden and pleasure of making him a playlist that he would jam out to.
scott pilgrim vs. the world (2010): songs inspired by sex bob-omb and the overall playful vibes of the movie.
good will hunting (1997): these are songs that i think will would include in his rotation or songs that represent the journey that will takes during the movie.
the hunt (2012): this was a very tragic movie about a man who suffers greatly based on a false accusation. one of my worst fears is not being believed when i haven't done anything. truly there is nothing worse than injustice and with this selection of songs i tried to convey the dread, sadness, and overwhelming rage that the main character, lucas, felt when everyone he knew turned on him.
mother (2020): playlist based off the japanese drama movie i watched about the toxic relationship between mother and son. you'll probably relate to this playlist if you have mommy issues.
romeo & juliet (1996): songs that encapsulate the tragedy of their relationship. yes 'exit music (for a film)' by radiohead is involved.
the holdovers (2023): this is my actual family. lots of 60's and 70's music.
christopher moltisanti (the sopranos, 1999): one of my favorite characters from the show bcs he's unfortunately very relatable to me. mostly based on what he said in the first season, "it's like the regularness of life is too hard for me." I get that.
abigail armstrong (dance academy, 2009): based on a quote from season 1 where she said "you all want me to fail." Abigail has this need to be perfect and she feels like she's all alone, so i thought that I would turn those feelings into a playlist bcs i can relate.
tara and christian (dance academy, 2009): based off the tumultuous relationship between main characters, tara and christian. based off the quote from season 3 where tara says to christian "i just want so badly to be rid of you". even if you don't know the show, i hope you can enjoy the sad break up playlist of it all.
heres my letterboxd account btw (just in case you were curious about how i rated these films): https://boxd.it/3mh3D

Is it over? Did he die?
(originally by @julietophelia)
#the most important line of the entire series. jughead made one choice outside of the narrative (to save archie) and it altered the course of#the rest of the series. just like that other time he broke free of being the narrator (also to save archie)#i was having trouble reblogging the original post so. i think about it a lot#fav

revisiting riverdale season 3 episode 4 "the midnight club" post-season 7 is insane because so many of the story elements that are constants in the different incarnations of the main cast (riverdale/50sdale) are also true for the parent characters. and they're portrayed by the same actors. do you understand? fred & hermione dated because archie & veronica did and alice & fp dated because betty & jughead did. in a sense they're just yet another alternate main cast, so even when portraying the parents these characters are still stuck in their own respective narratives because that's what riverdale is about
#riverdale#personal#it goes a lot beyond the ships but those were just the easiest examples to grab lol#like. fred stuggles with choosing between music and sports and cares deeply about his dad#alice's storyline is focused on being in control of her own sexuality + she's the one to discover the murder#hermione's having doubts about unintentionally being involved in hiram's crime/(career)#penelope is suffering at the hands of the blossoms/her abusive parents#sierra (mccoy) is a political activist who is trying to come into her 'voice' and make a career#and tom (keller)'s story is focused on his forbidden romance#and that leaves us with fp whose storyline is more reflective of jugheads s2 storyline except! it's subverted in most ways#because he's jughead and as a narrator he doesn't have to play by the same rules that everyone else does#it's so good i'm losing my mindddd

it’s like of course archie couldn’t come out before now. because archie is so intrinsically tied up in his own legacy and in jugheads narration and neither of those things can allow him to come out. and s1-6 archie is a kid stuck between his everyday american joe role and the knowledge that he’s a figure of this by gone era. in like the same way that people point at the 50s and say it was all so much simpler and better and blah blah back then. well that’s archie! and of course it wasn’t simpler or better or ideal but that isn’t like. RECKONED with. until they are all back there. and so only then can archie’s underlying contradiction be addressed. he’s free from his legacy because he IS his legacy he’s in progress rather than a final product and most importantly. HE IS GAY!
#does this make sense. it had to be 50sdale it always had to be 50sdale#i haven’t actually watched the episode yet But. i have been meditating on this. also he’s free from jugheads narration which could mean#nothing. or it could mean that jughead couldn’t allow his protagonist to love him back. i love u riverdale#riverdale

Jughead asks this question in a moment of despair about his sister's sinister indie films in Riverdale 5.3, but then by the series finale, his final moments are as a not-human (possibly Angel, possibly Demon) Jughead who traps the soul of Betty in a state of being forever 17 in the Diner of the Sweet Hereafter, for all eternity, and making us the audience complicit in it.

is anyone else reading dykette...what do we think y'all. i'm kind of annoyed by the narrator's cynicism but it's interesting nonetheless...does she ever cheer up or get outspoken about her pessimism or should i give up now
#not against a narrator i dislike (hello jughead from riverdale) but im sick of her keeping it all inside#like kinda need her to explode and make it everyone elses problem too

the only reason the holy trinity is not explained by comparing it to the existence of multiple jugheads in riverdale is that people would realize jughead from riverdale has suffered more and more meaningfully on the tv show riverdale than jesus christ from nazareth did in the bible
#it's like jughead said he (the pope) is afraid of this exposure#like whatever they nailed jesus to a cross. many people were nailed to a cross back in the day#who else but jughead was split in 3 different guys at age 25 to create narrate and live in the world#have superpowers get trapped in the past have your memory erased and still be tasked with saving the soul of the town by your angel gf#who at this point is sooo stepping out on him with the archangel raphel btw. hashtag taphael... rabitha#riverdale#thing

Jughead is kind of long John silver coded. If you think abt it [is trampled by a herd of geese]
#like. insisting on your absense from the narrative making you the centre of it.#jughead is THE narrator. there are three of him thats how much of him there is.#“there were only three people at that booth” girl.#crucially jughead is the problem.#john silver coded
