*Book Report!*
Napoleon, A Biography by Frank McLynn
Tumblr media
I would just like to start off by saying that I do not recommend this book, unless you've already exhausted the 300+ other books in the world about Napoleon, then sure, why not.
It took me about 6 months to read, which is actually quick for me for a book of its size (668 pages) with life and everything going on but sometimes I just had to press on, or I really would have to be coming back as a ghost to read the other books! I'm just glad it's over 😮‍💨
My biggest problems were the reoccurring words and themes that repeated themselves so tirelessly. I dare someone to count the times the words "Machiavelli/Machiavellian" and "oriental complex" were used. "Fabian" and "Jungian" had their moments too. Then there were all the psychoanalytical Freudian reasons behind every little thing Napoleon did. It was because he felt this way about his mother or this way about his eldest brother. His views on women and his hidden homosexuality... These were the reason for everything apparently. In fact, you could make a drinking game out of these if you have a death wish.
The book definitely had its redeeming moments when it was actually focused on a particular battle or event. Unfortunately everything in-between was just filler speculation or spouting facts.
The end of this book was the great debate of poisoning, stomach cancer, or other reasons for Napoleon's demise. You have to forgive it for being published in 1997. The author seemed to go with Montholon being the poisoner but gave decent argument for all sides, even a myriad of different diseases it could have been. He said that "officially" stomach cancer is the cause of death since that was not a malady that the British could be accused of killing him with. It obviously ran in his family as well. They couldn't go with hepatitis or another apparently "more plausible" illness without being at fault by providing negligent medical care or effects of the climate from keeping him prisoner on St. Helena.
Read at your own risk, as these are just my opinions but let me say I've never been so glad to be done with a book!

Blog post 1: Testing the Tumblr Waters
I’ve been on Tumblr periodically for about fifteen years. Unfortunately, I erased my original account about five years ago. I primarily used Tumblr to repost StarCraft related stuff, or look at random pieces of art.
I love writing, but I don’t know what to post here. This is just a random test blog. I’ll probably erase it. I wanted to check out some of the text related features. Oh! I’ll make a list of something.
BOOKS I WILL BUY AND READ
Neuromancer by William Gibson
Columbus: The Four Voyages, 1492-1504 by Laurence Bergreen
Marco Polo: From Venice to Xanadu by Laurence Bergreen
Casanova: The World of a Seductive Genius by Laurence Bergreen
The Alienist by Caleb Carr
The Lord Of The Rings (50th anniversary collectors hardcover) by J.R.R. Tolkien
The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
Politicians, Partisan, and Parasites: My Adventures in Cable News by Tucker Carlson
A Season in Hell by Authur Rimbard
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
Napoleon: A Life by Andrew Roberts
Napoleon: A Biography by Frank McLynn
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell
The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
The Iliad by Homer
Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
Dune by Frank Herbert
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The Essential Rumi
The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe by Edgar Allan Poe
The Poetry of Pablo Neruda by Pablo Neruda
The Complete Works of Plato by Plato
Complete Works of Aristotle Vol.1 by Aristotle (Bollingen Series Edition)
Complete Works of Aristotle Vol.2 by Aristotle (Bollingen Series Edition)
Now let's find a random GIF to sprinkle on top,
Tumblr media
Are there graphs I can add? I can't seem to find any.
You can add polls!!!!!
I'll stop here.

For the most part I subscribe to Napoleon’s assertion that, “Peruse again and again the campaigns of Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar, gustavus Adolphus, Turenne, Eugene, and Frederick. Model yourself upon them. This is the only means of becoming a great captain, and of acquiring the secret of the art of war.” and I’ve read a number of books chronicling the campaigns of numerous countries and solitary generals to that point. I’ve found the campaigns of Napoleon, Caesar, and the Germans in WWII (despite how horrible they were) as by far the most enlightening among others to lesser degrees. Are there any specific countries, generals, or campaigns on which you would highly recommend reading and do you have any specific biographies or texts that recount them well? Looking at Frank McLynn’s Genghis Khan right now and Hannibal seems like he’d be well worth reading but I haven’t found a definite or even adequate biography on him. More than anything though, just whatever you would most highly recommend. Thanks in advance, much appreciated.
Oh absolutely.
I always recommend Flavius Belisarius, his campaigns are absolutely fascinating - he truly earned his name "The Last of the Romans." Bertrand du Guesclin, the Eagle of Brettony, is another excellent choice. For naval campaigns, Yi Sun-Sin of Korea was an exceptional admiral, Coral Sea is fascinating for its implications to naval warfare, and I'm always fond of the Battle of Leyte Gulf because my family served in that battle and spent time in the water after his boat was shot out from under him. For lesser-known modern generals who were a bit unsung heroes, I recommend Pap Thomas and Viscount William Slim (easily the best British commander in the Second World War - eat your heart out Monty!) Reading about Genghis Khan is always a plus, but don't forget Subotai, who was an excellent field commander and a significant enabler of successful Mongol campaigns. For air warfare, the First World War aces are a real treat to read, but the advent of over-the-horizon warfare is probably more relevant. You might want to check out my book recommendations tag.
Thanks for the question, Luke.

Any interesting books on Mexican politicians or historical figures that you could recommend?
Two that immediately come to mind are Frank McLynn’s Villa and Zapata: A History of the Mexican Revolution (BOOK | KINDLE), and Enrique Krauze’s Mexico: Biography of Power (BOOK | KINDLE). And a really fascinating story, told in M.M. McAllen’s Maximilian and Carlota: Europe’s Last Empire in Mexico (BOOK | KINDLE), is that of Maximilian I, the younger brother of Austria’s longtime Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph, who was installed as Emperor of Mexico by Napoleon III. The French took advantage of the American Civil War to try to regain a significant foothold in the New World and were assisted in bringing Maximilian to power by Mexican royalists who opposed Benito Juárez. However, once the American Civil War ended and the Americans started to turn their attention towards Mexico and the flagrant violation of the Monroe Doctrine, the French pretty much packed up and said “bon voyage” to Mexico and Maximilian.
Spoiler alert -- it did not end well for Maximilian:

1. Joel Tyler Headley, Napoleon and His Marshals (1847): “But nothing could arouse him from his agonizing reflections--his friend lay dying, and the heart he loved more than his life was throbbing its last pulsations.” (Bonus points for the three pages of incredibly purple prose that precede this.)
2.  The biography of Napoleon I saw in a second-hand bookstore (Google tells me it was probably William Milligan Sloane’s 1901 Life of Napoleon Bonaparte) that called Duroc “Napoleon’s second self”.
Dishonorable mention to Frank McLynn’s Napoleon: A Biography (2002), which compared Napoleon and Duroc to both Achilles and Patroclus and Alexander and Hephaestion, then started the next paragraph with “But no homo!”.
I’m sure there are others but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
Secondary-source descriptions of Duroc’s death, ranked by homoeroticism.

Napoleon A Biography by Frank McLynn
Napoleon A Biography by Frank McLynn
Napoleon A Biography by Frank McLynn
Napoleon Bonaparte’s character and achievements have always divided critics and commentators. In this compelling biography, Frank McLynn draws on the most recent scholarship and throws a brilliant light on this most paradoxical of men as military leader, lover, and emperor. Tracing Napoleon’s extraordinary career, McLynn examines the Promethean legend from his…

Exhibit A:
This whole page is just *gestures vaguely in frustration* but this part especially. I'm not saying that the author agrees with this, but why include it? It's beyond ridiculous. I had to ask my husband if he's a repressed homosexual because he too likes butts lmao 🤣 (He said he's not)

So while I'm trapped on the couch holding and feeding a sick baby, I have started reading Napoleon A Biography by Frank McLynn. So far it's like a rush of questionable information. He mentioned several theories about Napoleon's birth, including that he was actually the eldest - not Joseph, that his father wasn't Carlo but actually the Comte de Marbeuf, and one super outrageous idea that Napoleon didn't actually exist and he was just an embodiment of the French people. Okay okay, I wasn't there so there could be some sort of chance that the first two *could* be true but I'm pretty sure everyone that has written memoirs and books and painted portraits and passed down stories to their descendants didn't collectively make up some fictional dude called Napoleon. That's so wild to say that I'm not sure if I can believe what other stuff he's putting in this book. Like, why even throw that in there?? O.o
