This is the process my brain goes through every time I see anything about Netflix Avatar The Last Airbender.
My first reaction is always: Why? The original, although not without flaws, doesn't leave a lot of room to improve. A good remake or adaptation usually involves an updated context or change in perspective that adds to the original work and gives it new meaning. It's a risky undertaking because it usually involves wanting to take on something established as iconic and make it your own. But Netflix is a corporation and seems very risk averse for the most part. Its only investment is in the name recognition of AtLA. It's hard to visualize Netflix deliberately taking a big risk on an expensive show.
My second reaction is: How? The original series is about 1400 minutes over 61 episodes, and it still had to rush the ending. We're looking at 8 episodes of roughly 45-60 minutes per episode for season 1, which would require Netflix to let it run more than 3 seasons, if the series has similar pacing. Historically however Netflix shows have glacial pacing, and rarely make three seasons. Not really sure how they plan to tell the story if the series is anything like the average Netflix series, meaning it either needs to undercut the story or let the series breathe for at least five seasons. But nothing Netflix has done makes me want to watch anything they make as an ongoing series? Why bother, they cancel everything I enjoy. So I wonder how. What's the hook to say "this will be able to provide something new and interesting compared to the original, and will be allowed to tell the complete story."
Which leads me to think, but you can't judge if something is good without seeing it. Except none of this is about whether it's good, I just find myself wondering what are the odds it's worth the effort? They're low, and it has nothing to do with whether or not it's even any good on its own merits.
Following this, I ask myself, what would a good version of this be. Imagine you are making a live action series with eight hour long episodes per season based on a children's cartoon with 20 thirty minute episodes per season. You are trying to encompass a story which was presented over three seasons as a cartoon, and you do not know if you will have more than those eight episodes. It's made for Netflix which, in terms of a company which will protect the hard earned fruits of your artistic labor, is the fox guarding the henhouse. What do you do?
If you are looking to make something good, that respects your audience investment and your own work, you make radical changes to the story. You change the pacing, the character arcs, the plot arcs. You make sure you deliver a complete story in those episodes with as much respect for the original work and as many new ideas as you can.
Except, at that point, what is even the point of a remake. The only way to work with it is either to trust Netflix allowing you to finish the story (which you'd need to be incredibly naive to do), or tell a story so different it may as well be wholly original. And that's where I always end up. Like, it'll probably be fine, but what's the point of it all? Another vanishing digital property to get canceled because of some undefinable failure to return on investment.
I think about it a lot because the two ends of the spectrum seem to be "dunk on every new piece of information" or "wait and see" but the only conclusion I can ever reach is "why even care?" That's been the lesson to take home from digital streaming in general when it comes to series, but Netflix in particular, and honestly for movie series too. If it can't be self contained, the companies who produce and release these kinds of series just cannot be trusted with it, and there are too many good original stories being put out to care anymore about big budget promises that one day they will definitely for sure deliver a finished story, this time for real.
I care enough to think about why I don't feel anything at all about Netflix Avatar. It'll be fine, whatever else. Just fine.

WIBTA for leaving a DND campaign abruptly?
Some backstory: I had joined a DND game about 5 years ago right after breaking up with my toxic ex at the time. Me and my ex were both trying to be cordial at this time and ended up both joining a DND game run by a mutual friend.
In our first session, I had noticed my ex made her character be a parody of me that she made look like an awful person. She then kept dm-ing me during our sessions to tell me how to play my character better and other general backseat gaming stuff.
Very quickly, maybe about a month in, I contacted the DM about leaving the campaign due to wanting to distance myself from my ex. She was very upset I wanted to leave and offered to kick my ex from the group instead. I declined saying it would only cause more drama. The DM agreed to let my character go off at the end of the activity we were gonna do that session so it would make sense story-wise.
But this departure did not happen. after that conversation she vague-posted onling about how people dont want to be her friend. She then purposefully kept extending this part of the plot, just so I wouldnt leave the game and could realize it could still be fun. I told her outright I could not do this anymore after 3 more additional sessions and telling me she'll get to my character's exit soon. I always felt like an ass to the other players in the game for leaving them abruptly but I could not do it anymore.
Fast forward roughly 4 years, the DM tells me she is going to make a new campaign and would like for me to join since my ex was no longer in it. I agreed as I had missed playing DND a lot.
For the past year or so I have been in this campaign and it can be fun at times but I still feel out of place. This new session is a direct continuation of the previous campaign's storyline and regularly references it. Now, as far as I know my ex's character has not been referenced at all but I am constantly reminded of this situation whenever they mention a character's name I don't remember (because honestly I don't remember her characters name nor do I want to). I know I said to not bring her up around me but I don't quite trust this friend to keep her word. Simply because I don't think she ever remembers anything I tell her out of a place of... just not caring.
The DM and I just don't quite mesh that well. I don't really like her DM-ing style of making it up as the session happens. I don't like that she will constantly decide what my character is doing, even if I ask to do something, she tells me to roll to see if i can, i can get a nat20 and she will still decide what my character will do next based on what she thinks is funnier to her but makes my next action harder to accomplish.
I have dm'd her to talk about the progression of my character arc (after she constantly implys in session my character is the comedic relief and doesnt have any character development) and she'll go ooo and aaa (literally all she would say) but never actually implement anything I recommend.
I kept saying to myself it will get better in time. I have voiced my wants for my character, and they are ignored. In session, my character actions are essentially decided for me no matter how I roll the dice. It feels weird to be around half of the party bc they spent 4 years in a campaign with my ex who played a parody of me. esp hard after the DM keeps making me be the comedic relief even though I keep trying to play more seriously. other players constantly joke about how my character is gonna be the one that gets them all killed etc because of actions I dont necessarily decide.
Now as mentioned before, DM is also known to vague-blog about how "her friends secretly hate her" at any moment as well. This has happened before after I tried to "real talk" with her a handful of times over unrelated topics too (even if she initiates this conversation)
Given everything above, I want to leave this DND game after giving it a try for a year (really giving it an opportunity to improve). We left off with my character running off alone to get supplies for the party. I was thinking I could make a statement saying I had some personal things come up and I need to leave the game abruptly and leave it to the DM to decide what to do with my character.
Now I feel like I may be the AH because: I am leaving the game abruptly for a second time technically. I would contact the DM on how to make it make sense for my character to depart, but I feel like she will do the same thing as before with the previous campaign and keep putting it off, especially after ignoring my character growth ideas for a year in this current campaign. I also feel like I may be the AH because in character my group does need those supplies, but there is nothing stopping the DM from controlling my character to deliver supplies within the first 5 minutes of the next session.

ATLALA, aka Avatar the Last Airbender Live Action
Sooooo, I finished the first season and had thoughts (just like everyone else lol). First context, non-spoilery thoughts, and then spoilers under the cut, yadda-yadda.
Why context? Because for a lot of people OG ATLA was their childhood, and they have super strong feelings about it and about any adaptation that exists. I'm not one of those people.
The first time I watched OG ATLA I was over 20 years old, which means I was an adult and had adult viewpoints about the story – worldbuilding, character writing, etc. It was never the hallowed most perfect show ever for me. It was and still is a fucking good show with some amazing writing and worldbuilding but I did have some gripes.
So when ATLALA was announced I remained neutral – I've seen the movie that shall not be named and din't really like it but shitty adaptations have always existed. When we started getting photos and trailers and news pieces, I was feeling pretty positive about the visuals, but neither news pieces or trailers actually tell you shit about what the writing or worldbuilding is like. However, I was about 70% optimistic.
Because what indications I did get about visuals, writing etc, were very reminiscent of another adaptation that had come out recently, about a series that was actually a bit more important to me on an emotional than ATLA. I'm talking about One Piece, and OPLA which came out last August. I've been a fan of that for 10 years longer than ATLA, and while they did a lot of changes, the spirit of the story was there.
So I copied my optimism and good feelings from that, going into ATLALA.
Now, the thoughts.
Visuals are pretty good. There are moments when I can tell they left some visuals out due to trickiness/budget (the "is Zuko's ship real?" review after the premiere). Some things look fake or plasticy, some stuff is too clean. Bending looks a lot better than in the movie that shall not be named.
Writing has issues. Some of it is very expositiony which makes it wooden and the shots uninteresting (there were so many badly framed shots with characters just awkwardly standing and talking). There are some lovely bits of dialogue that gave me feelings, but those moments were in the minority. And some writing choices were also quite childish, even for an adaptation of a kids' cartoon, so I'm a bit confused about the intended age demographic – except there are some really violent bits in there, which leave me even more confused.
Pacing was either frantic or okay-ish. The writers clearly had trouble paring down the OG series, and then ended up cramming stuff together. I could keep up with it (knowing what certain characters roughly meant for the plot, even if they were at a different place and time), but I'm not quite sure if someone uninitiated in the OG series could. The last 2 episodes had probably the best pacing and even then there were some things that made me go "hmmm."
Some actors have issues emoting – main and extras. I agree that the Gaang has lost some of their flaws compared to the OG series. Maybe some of them will make more of an appearance in season two when everyone's more experienced at acting? Especially considering that they'll likely have stuff more spaced out there – there are some episodes I'm pretty sure they'll outright skip, just based on the choices in this season. But we'll see. There were some fun and interesting bonding moments between different characters.
Sokka, Zuko, and Suki were the standouts from the younger cast. Suki is considerably different from the OG but it was acted and written well, and is an interesting choice. Sokka's quips, while not as numerous as in the OG, were fun. Physical comedy is obviously more toned down because real bodies can't do the same shit as cartoons. More about his arc choices later. Zuko was a bit toned down from the OG but IMO also the closest to it. And as someone who's almost finished with a Zuko AU fanfic, I was positively cackling due to the fact that some of the choices made for the character are similar to something I've done in my fic.
As for the rest of the main kids, there'll be more in the spoiler bits, BUT, they're different, and feel less experienced in acting. They're not bad but some choices were definitely different than in the show and they offer interesting opportunities. We'll see how they pan out, but be prepared for some speculation from me.
Fight scenes sometimes had IMO slow moments in the choreo, and they could have been better. Some were excellent, some a bit ehhh.
On the whole, I think this is about 7 out of 10. Some moments were 8 out of 10. It's a passable adaptation
Spoilery thoughts waaaay down.
Whoo boy. Where to start here?
Let's start with the cramming. As far as I can tell from my notes, the episodes are roughly divided like so:
EP1: 3,5 and bits (Boy in the Iceberg, Avatar Returns, Southern Air Temple, half of the Storm, bits of Avatar and the Fire Lord)
EP2: 1 and bits (Warriors of Kyoshi, part of Waterbending Scroll)
EP3: 3 halves (King of Omashu, Jet, Northern Air Temple)
EP4: 1, 4 halves and bits (King of Omashu, Jet, Northern Air Temple, Cave of Two Lovers, half of Winter Solstice P1, bits of the Avatar Day,)
EP5: 2 halves and pieces of 3 (half of Winter Solstice P1, half of Bato of the Water Tribe, part of Southern Raiders, part of the Library, part of Siege of the North) AND timeskip mention of the Great Divide and the pirates from Waterbending Scroll
EP6: 2, two halves and bits (Winter Solstice P2, Blue Spirit, half of Bato of the Water Tribe half of the Storm, part of Siege of the North)
EP7: 2 (Waterbending Master, Siege of the North)
EP8: 2 and pieces (Siege of the North, Return to Omashu, bits of Northern Air Temple, part of the Library)
Waterbending Scroll is a bit of throughline because you see moments of training in pretty much all of the episodes.
Episode 1 was very full, and felt rushed at times. There were a few places where they could have shortened some parts (like the earthbender spy scene at the start) to give more time for other stuff. Biggest gripes are the convenience of timing – Aang going off to clear his head only for everyone to die that very night. HOWEVER, me and my friends talked about it being likely Spirit shenanigans going "fuck, Air Nomads are gonna die now, we need to deepfreeze the Avatar for storage." We also concluded that the sudden current of Sokka and Katara finding Aang was either physics we don't understand, or Spirit shenanigans. Also the thing about all the Air Nomads coming over for the Great Comet festival? And then having so few of them on screen? Sorry, but I ain't buying it. Having such a sparse population in one temple I could have bought (with caveats) but adding in the gathering, nah.
Episode 2, Sokka-Suki was beautiful. I think it works even with the removed downplaying of girls capabilities (this change also brought some other stuff to Sokka I absolutely adored in later episodes but I'll talk about that when I start ranting about the characters). This was pretty close to the OG episode in many ways and I really don't have other problems with it, besides the somewhat childish end discussion about hope and shit with Aang and Suki's mom (Suki having a badass mom is fun). Manifesting Avatars and being able to talk to them only at their shrines will be an interesting take on stuff. Because that will affect some stuff on later seasons and I'm not sure how.
(And considering how scared Aang is of the Avatar State this early on, we might end up skipping the Avatar State in the next season. At least partially. Because we did get a lot of info now.)
That's a very full itinerary and it was hardest to follow at eps 3-4 because there were so many things going on. Jet's and the Mechanist's conflicting storylines made for an interesting drama (though, again, hard to follow) and gave Sokka and Katara something to do – which they didn't really have in the OG Omashu episode, which was what Aang was mostly dealing with here. In my opinion these two episodes didn't get a proper handling, because they're one of the few instances were we get people from the Earth Kingdom doing questionable shit, but we don't really discuss it. And while everyone know marketing is a mistake (it makes no one happy), considering that this series was trying to sell itself as a more mature take, that feeling is left kinda lacking in regards to Jet and the Mechanist. I do appreciate Bumi being fucking bitter, like Yass, you go king, as well as the bit with the Earth Kingdom soldiers speaking of grief and mistreating Iroh. That complexity is what was left lacking with Jet and the Mechanist, and how Katara and Sokka dealt with that emotionally. Also loved Zuko getting hit by a broom and Iroh taking the fall for him. The Zuko-Zhao alliance was an interesting angle to take (after messing it up pfft) and establishing early that Azula is a master infiltrator? I liked that move, also the fact that there are Fire Nation rebels. Although I fucking loved the quick fake marriage.
5 and 6, despite being about as full if not fuller, were weaven together really well in my opinion. My biggest gripe with that two episode storyline was how the Fire Sage Shyu-Aang team-up was done – not that it was any better in the OG to be fair but it is more jarring in live action. I just about died at the 41st twist because holy shit that's an amazing angst take and I appreciate it so much. And while we do get Aang planting an acorn, it feels like a really small moment and I think the Hei Bai issue should have got a bit more attention as the episode was resolved. Koh was fucking terrifying and the appearance of Wan Shi Tong – and in the last two episodes the appearance of the celestial objects calendar machine, as well as the fact that Zhao got his dirt on Tui and La from a Fire Sage – leads me to believe we won't be getting the Library episode next season.
(The only way I can see Return to Omashu happening is if it's remixed with Imprisoned which was totally left out of this season, or we get the important info aka neutral Jing info all from the Swamp, or from a letter Bumi sent. I personally think Return to Omashu-Imprisoned remix is more likely, just so we can prep Teo and the Mechanist for the Day of the Black Sun which we saw flashing by on the celestial objects machine just before we finally got the confirmation that Sozin's Comet is still a thing. Although The Avatar State could also be remixed into this in a sort of "yes, Earth Kingdom needs to free Bumi etc but I can't do it in Avatar State, we need to be smart.")
Episodes 7 and 8 were pretty chill in pacing issues. I thought Yue was a bit too quick in warming up to Sokka but considering how it was explained I can accept it. Also, the fact that Tui and La are intelligent enough to not be fish 24/7/365 is a change that makes sense although the whole Ice Moon (is it the local Halloween?) thing was very out of left field. Women joining the fight was a wild update and definitely more of a modern take than an early 2000s take. Do I have other thoughts? Sure, but I don't want to write bajillion essays and I just want a general overview in one post.
Zuko is, like I said, a standout. Absolutely love his conspiracy board, and as someone who writes a fic with a more scholarly inclined Zuko, I loved him being able to draw, being the foremost Avatar expert in the world (you can't tell me there can be more than one or two people out there who know more than Zuko at this point, look at his research), and having opinions about calligraphy brushes. Ugh, my heart. There's some absolutely wonderful acting happening and he does action really well. Is he a bit less explosive than in the OG? Sure, but one must remember, that adaptations are just licensed fanfics. His abuse background is in the performance, and my biggest question is the Agni Kai. There was a certain desperation in his face, so he must have wanted to make an impression on Ozai, and maybe felt a bit more like he had the right to it – as this show made it clear he had been invited in the War Council and did not needle his way in. Also the 41st twist oh holy smokes I just about screamed. His flaw is still anger and trouble thinking plans through.
Azula (her bangs in the flashback crack me up, was that her emo phase?) is more obviously affected by Ozai's games in this. I know OG Azula has loads of fans and there are loads of deep dives into her character and abuse and etc, but this is actually the first time her writing has made it obvious to me. She's still cold and calculating, but she's affected by more things and that makes her into a more approachable character for me. I know many fans got this from the OG portrayal so I know this is a me thing.
Sokka is another standout. I saw an interview where the actor was like "I tried to interject and ad lib humour where I could" and I appreciate it, because a lot of them made me cackle. There was some really good humour there. As for his arc and conflict; I think it's really interesting that he tries to live up to his dad's image of a warrior, and doing it very much out of duty. It isn't so much that he wants to be a warrior, but he wants to be good enough and I think that came through wonderfully. He can be a warrior, but it ain't his passion. It also offers very interesting bonding possibilities and parallels with Zuko. My heart broke at that ice-dodging scene in episode 5, as well as his heart-to-heart with Katara in episode 4 (fucking SIBLING LOVE TRIUMPHS). Also absolutely loved the fact that he supported Katara being a warrior in the North. His flaws in the OG are self-esteem issues (nailed here), and a certain level of arrogance, that affected his attitude towards girls at times. The latter has been removed but considering it only lasted until episode 4 in the OG series anyway, I don't see it as a terribly big deal. We can still get his "it'll totally work out this way" arrogant moment at pretty much any point in the story in the future.
Katara has trouble emoting. I don't know how much experience her actor has with acting, but I hope she gets better with practice. There are some very nice bonding moments she has with Sokka and Aang that bring emotion out, but she's very stone faced a lot of the time. One could read it as a symptom of seeing her mother being literally burned alive but that depends on how her arc is written in future seasons, and how it's acted. I really like the parallel with Sokka, of him trying to be a warrior out of duty, while Katara wants to be that and has trouble getting the opportunity to do so. This came out really well in episode 4. The fact that she was made a fucking commander of sorts at North was amazing moment of proving to her that she can be, that she is, a warrior. I'm kinda sad her temper has been left out of the writing, because with her being a self-taught water bender (which I'm okay with because we see her practising every fucking episode) there's a threat of her sliding into so-called Mary Sue territory. Hopefully Toph's inclusion brings her temper out next season. She's also missing some of her naiveté, although having a crush on the first good looking outsider (with fucking mirrored shots) just like her brother is hilarious.
Aang is... to mature. He gets a lot of really good and morally and ethically right speeches, and while he expresses that he's scared and doesn't know what he's doing, it still feels too mature. He also doesn't have that many dumbass child moments (what was that episode he just went "oops" in, that was funny and felt childlike, and then there was the water fight he had with Katara). It could be because we're going through stuff so fast but it'll be hard to fix later. I kinda like how his connection with Katara is being the last of their kind and loss – and then the small really good acting in ep7 when Katara says stewed sea prunes taste like home, and you can just see him go "oh, there's still someplace she can belong to, unlike me." I loved his calligraphy brush discussion with Zuko, because there was the beginnings of a bond there. As a friend said, it's nice they removed the Disney princess like love at first sight thing from the OG. If this turns into a romance (I have thoughts on that... later) I feel like it has a better chance to grow organically. No, I never shipped Kataang, please refer to the context part of this post.
Suki had a fun isolated, but curious, and socially awkward vibe to her. She's obviously different from the OG, but it's a fun and interesting difference, as the most characterisation we ever got for her was badass. Yue was interesting, more assertive and playful, which I liked. I also liked the fact that she had obvious duties and was expected to be the next chief. Even if the Northern Water Tribe sexism was kept, this felt like it added some dimension to it. June flirting with Iroh was hilarious, enough said. Mai and Ty Lee are blanks of wood. Their writing, and the direction they were given was horrible, and they're a prime example of that awkward standing and bad framing issue I mentioned way earlier. Ty Lee could have at least been bending herself into a pretzel, and Mai could have been using a knife to dig stuff from under her nails or something. I hope they get better writing and direction in the future.
Iroh was honestly pretty enjoyable. There were some moments of skilled evasive answering, but I was left missing him saying that Zuko was like a son to him. They do have really good chemistry though and you can see the care between the characters. I hated the long monologue at the end of episode 6, that felt very much beneath whatever target audience they were aiming for, and failed show not tell. Not perfect but can improve. Also, that one part where they played Leaves on the Vine, I almost died.
Ozai being a manipulative, abusive game addict is different but offers him some agency and motivation besides megalomania, which I appreciate. He had a peculiar expression when he burned Zuko, and that smells like hidden lore to me.
That's probably every character I feel like addressing at this point. However, I did mention romance in Aang's section, and I have to agree with the other whispers on the net. The fucking scarf scene. At this point, it's more likely for this show to be Zutara than Kataang IMO. BUT before people go and blow up about it, some points; cartoons offer more leeway in visual age differences, I feel like they would need to extend ATLALA plot line to last several years (instead of like, 9 months it's in the OG) to make it visually make sense. The Fortuneteller (as well as Katara's obsession with love?), and Aang's love at first sight have all been written out. Cave of Two Lovers was used for sibling love on the first season, and we ain't visiting that location again, not with how efficiently we did pretty much all of the Omashu stuff this season. Most of the Kataang iconic moments have been left out deliberately. Does this mean we'll get Zutara? Of course not, but due to the scarf scene, as well as that rivals thing they have going (we literally have two fights between Zuko and Katara this season, and the water sprout she used to thwart his fireball in episode one, and if that isn't a traditional beginning of a rivalry, nothing is), it's certainly more likely at this point than Kataang.
But we'll see, just like with everything else. It's an okay start, it's far from perfect, but it does offer new viewpoints that I find fascinating.
What's in the future.
I already explained my Return to Omashu-Imprisoned-Avatar State mash-up idea above, and that we'll likely miss the Library. I also think Avatar Day will be left out. I do however think, that we'll get the Deserter next season. We also need a way for Aang to learn about the Comet coming again and if Library is out (and probably also the Desert), best chances are IMO the Swamp or the Fortuneteller (remixing those two together is also possible). Or maybe Yeong Yeong has spies and they tell him about the Comet and he tells the Gaang. I also think they'll be foreshadowing/setting up White Lotus a bit more than we got in the OG.
I don't quite have my thought together enough to make any other guesses, but we will get Toph, Ba Sing Se, and Azula's Mean Girls Squad, but no clue yet how they'll be remixed. Season 2 has a much clearer timeline structure, whereas season 1 had a lot of episodic stuff that doesn't timeline wise offer too many roadblocks for remixes, as we saw with what they did with Omashu.
I think that's about everything I can think off. If you have comments, please be nice. This was mostly rambling, and tin foil hat baiting.

Okay the yandere doffy has me thinking many thoughts!
Before I begin i must bring attention to the fact that Mr Mingo is based off of the title character from the tale of Don Quixote. Which is originally a cautionary tale towards chivalric romance storys that were popular at the time it was written (the 1600’s). And in the story Don Quixote is a man disillusioned with these chivalric tales (hes batshit crazy). Don Quixote decides to become a knight amd chooses a courtly lady to be his love. Expect he doesn’t know her name (and shes just a servant) so he calls her Dulcinea, which roughly translates to sweetheart. (Also our beloved Corazon is named after Don Quixote horse, Rosinante)
So like, personally, i cannot see Doffy as being anything other than a yandere. He just exudes crazy possessive energy, and just crazy in general lol. But i wont condemn Reader for being blinded by his kind facade at first, but then slowly realizing (as it becomes too late) that this guy is fuckin nuts.
So keeping these things in mind, i absolutely see Doffy calling the reader Dulcinea, but whether or not he actually remembers her name or not is up for interpretation (with all the code names hes given his subordinates i wouldn’t be surprised if he just doesn’t know/remember their real names).
Now i reveal my trap card, Corazon!
If this takes place before all the crazy sad stuff then i can seriously see Cora feeling kinda responsible for the Reader. Like shes just as innocent as any of the kids hes kept from joing. And maybe she even latches on to him once she realizes that Doffy isn’t that cool of a dude. And we all know intense situations bring about intense emotions, so of course Cora develops some feelings for Reader.
But oh does he feel guilty about it! Reader is already being manipulated and gaslit by Doffy and having a mix of intense emotions and feelings for him! This is no time to be adding another layer of confusion for her with Cora’s budding feelings as well.
Tumblr media
I AGREE WITH ALL OF THESE THINGS SO SO MUCH. THIS IS AMAZING.
Okay okay okay, so there's a few ways I could go about this.
You are naive and truly do not know what a despicable human Doflamingo is and slowly and uncertainly begin to grow in love for him. Everyone pities you because of your misguided notions that Doflamingo cares for you, because to the outside: it looks like he's manipulating you. In actuality, he truly does love you, but nobody believes him.
You are fully aware the sway you have over Doflamingo. He loves you, and you use it to your advantage. He gaslight, gatekeep, girlbosses you and keeps you trapped in Dressrosa until he believes you truly love him in return: which you can never truly do because he is such a horrible person.
You know he is obsessed with you, but truly do not realise that he is because he loves you. Even if he confesses, you never truly believe it: especially considering he has killed everybody he had claimed to love (exception of his mother).
AND I'M SORRY, DID YOU SAY CORA'S BUDDING FEELINGS TOO??? 👀👀👀
Because I'm so there, you have no idea.
I am also very much digging the fact you called him Mister Mingo because I'm now rolling about it. I call him "Mingas" in my house, and my toddler calls him "Kormingo" 💀.

A very basic, SPOILER FREE guide to understanding Evillious for casual fans
Basically this is exactly what the title says. This is a guide to understanding Evillious and what it’s about for people only casually interested in the series without A) presenting all of the information as confusingly as possible, B) exposing them to every single spoiler and plot twist in the narrative, or C) requiring someone to read hundreds of wiki pages or 13+ novels worth of story. Note that because I am reducing spoilers as much as possible, some of this information may be “incorrect” (as in, it presents information that’s given by the story as true, only to be later revealed as false).
Guide is under the cut. I will attempt to make this friendly for people with a poor attention span like myself but no promises.

First off, a break-down of the terms you’ll see fans throw around for the series and what they mean or are used for. This is not all-encompassing, but these are the most common you’ll see out there.
Evillious Chronicles/Evillious----This is the label that English-speaking fans use for the overall series. Note that this is, from what I can gather, an entirely fandom term, and is not used in any official capacity. Most Japanese fans will call it the 悪ノ series (the “of Evil” series).
Arcs----This is a fan term often used to refer to specific points in Evillious’ chronology where a song or novel takes place. Lunacy of Duke Venomania is “Lust Arc”, Evil Food Eater Conchita is "Gluttony Arc" Daughter of Evil is “Pride Arc”, Gift from the Princess who Brought Sleep and Fifth, Pierrot are “Sloth Arc”, Judgment of Corruption and Muzzle of Nemesis is “Greed/Wrath/Grath Arc”, etc.
Story of Evil/Daughter of Evil----While Story of Evil will sometimes be used to refer to Evillious as a whole, and in fact is the name of a children’s series mothy has written which does not take place in Evillious, generally when people use either of these terms they are referring to the events that take place in the “Daughter of Evil” songs. As a note, Daughter of Evil is the official name of mothy’s first novel series that adapts these songs (the series that begins with Cloture of Yellow).
Seven Deadly Sins/Deadly Sins of Evil----This is a term used to refer to the parts of Evillious that revolve around the deadly sin contractors and their actions in the classic songs by mothy--Daughter of Evil, Lunacy of Duke Venomania, Evil Food Eater Conchita, Gift from the Princess Who Brought Sleep, The Tailor of Enbizaka, Judgment of Corruption, and Muzzle of Nemesis. And more specifically, Deadly Sins of Evil refers to mothy’s second novel series that adapts these songs (and begins with Lunacy of Duke Venomania).
Original Sin Story/OSS: This refers to anything that takes place during Evillious’ chronological beginning. Note that while content relating to these events was released for a long time in songs and album booklets, it is only very recently that the novels adapting them were released, so some people discussing it may be referring to the former, but not the latter.
VOCALOID
The vast majority of characters in Evillious that you are likely familiar with from the songs are based off of VOCALOID characters in design, and “voiced” by them in the songs. Note though that multiple characters can be based off of the same VOCALOID, so fans will usually insist on referring to them by their character names rather than the VOCALOID that they are based on. Fans can usually tell who is who by context, but even without it, you can usually tell them apart by their unique clothing designs or specific hairstyles.
Setting
The series takes place primarily in a region called Evillious, on a continent called Bolganio. Evillious is roughly analogous to Europe, with many of its countries being counterpart to ones in the real world.
The most obvious ones are Lucifenia=France, Elphegort=Germany, Marlon=Britain, Beelzenia=Italy/Spain, Asmodean=Arabian Peninsula, Levianta=Russia. Note that Tailor of Enbizaka does NOT take place in Evillious, but rather a country to the far east called Jakoku. Jakoku=Japan.
For clarification’s sake, when I say Evillious, I am referring to the series as a whole, NOT the region in which most of the series takes place.
Evillious will share events in its history that are roughly analogous to those in our own world. The most clear-cut example is the events of Daughter of Evil, which mirror the French Revolution. However, Evillious’ history takes place in a compressed timeline--it spans the length of only one thousand years--and so there is much that is blended together or shifted around. Another clear-cut example of this is that the Age of Exploration is merged into the Victorian era during the events of Gift From the Princess Who Brought Sleep.
As the series covers 1000 years, there is a very large cast of characters and a huge set of political developments that are only barely touched on in the songs. Be advised--All but two of the main Seven Deadly Sin songs take place in completely different countries and time periods to each other (the exceptions being Judgment of Corruption and Muzzle of Nemesis).
Religion/Worldbuilding
There are a handful of belief systems in Evillious, but key for the setting (and for later plot developments) is the Levin faith. This religion has multiple branches, but it is, as might be expected, roughly equivalent to Christianity. ...Sort of.
The beliefs of the Levin faith describe the world as having been created by 4 main gods. The Earth God, Held (otherwise referred to as the Millennium Tree), the Sun God, Sickle, and the twin-headed dragon god, LeviaBehemo (or rather, the twin gods, Levia and Behemo). The most popular denomination of the Levin faith, the “Levia sect”, posits that LeviaBehemo is the only true god, and that all others are “false or evil gods”.
Bear in mind that all of these figures do genuinely exist in the world itself, even if their true nature is not as the Levin faith describes.
Also worth noting that in addition to their big 4 gods, there are also the 62 “god kin”, which exist in the setting as a collection of spirits that live under Held’s protection in the Millennium Tree forest in Elphegort.
The Levin faith posits that the world was created by the main gods as the third attempt at creating a paradise, the last two having been destroyed by malice/HER (we’ll get to that later). For this reason, the timeline of Evillious is referred to as the Third Period, with the previous two attempts being the First Period and Second Period.
Many fan guides will go into more detail on the First and Second Period, but this is huge spoiler content and absolutely unnecessary to understanding most of Evillious’ plot.
History
Disclaimer: You do not need to know ANY of this History section beforehand to understand the early books in the series or most of the songs.
Related to Evillious’ religion, its 1000 year history begins with what they call the Magic Kingdom Levianta (NOT the same thing as modern Levianta), which is roughly analogous to the Roman Empire, and the originator of the Levin faith. This kingdom was a highly advanced society run by magical individuals, with technology that was fueled by said magic. This technology came from relics found under the kingdom--these are said to be remains of the society their gods came from.
This is, for reference, the time period where Original Sin Story takes place.
At this time in their history Magic Kingdom Levianta was suffering from a problem with HER syndrome--short for Hereditary Evil Raiser. This is a genetic trait that hails from the Second Period, also sometimes referred to as Malice. Those born with it take joy in committing acts of violence and destruction, and generally sought to destroy society’s mores and norms (with a broader goal of destroying the world). Some key HER individuals in the series also express a desire to make more people like themselves through various means.
Levianta’s queen gave a prophecy that the world would be destroyed by the ark “Sin” (a vessel that the kingdom was built around) if they did not produce a set of twins for Levia and Behemo to incarnate into (referred to as the Twins of God). As a result, the senate created Project ‘Ma’ (Ma being short for Mem Aleph), which sought to use women with high magical potential to give birth to these twins.
The project failed. The only set of twins produced by it, named Hansel and Gretel, were taken away by their mother before Levia and Behemo could incarnate in them, and they become regularly occurring characters in the series. The twins were later kidnapped from their mother (who is herself killed) by a woman called Eve, a previous candidate in Project ‘Ma’. This act is referred to in-universe as the Original Sin, which later results in the formation of the Demons of Sin by Hansel and Gretel.
Magic Kingdom Levianta is eventually destroyed when the “Sin” ark blows up, setting back civilization by centuries and eliminating almost (but not quite) all of the population of people who are capable of and well-trained in using magic.
Demons of Sin and Magic
The Demons of Sin are presented as a collection of 7 demons that cause the major events of the Seven Deadly Sins songs by possessing the characters who carry them out (though they do possess other, less noteworthy people over the course of the series). They take the form of various monstrous animals in their “true” form, but their physical forms are actually the seven Vessels of Deadly Sin in which they reside. These vessels (which take the form of various objects such as a wineglass, a sword, mirrors, etc) are passed around by many, many hands over the course of the series, and show up frequently even if they are not the main demon of focus.
As you might expect, they correspond to each of the 7 Deadly Sins as detailed in the Bosch painting, “The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things” (with the Four Last Things relating to Evillious’ “ending”, which is an advanced spoiler concept there’s no need to go over.)
People can form contracts with them, which grant them special powers and immunities until the contract is broken. One of these abilities includes being able to transform into a being with features of the demon they are possessed by, such as having six wings or goat horns. While the demons are capable of influencing a person’s behavior, they usually do not outright control them save for in specific instances in the series, leaving most of these characters culpable for their own actions while possessed.
The magic rules of the series overall are a bit too complicated to go into in brief, but to get some idea of what it entails, there’s classic magic ideas like glyphs, rituals, and spells, as well spell-songs, body-swapping, enhanced physical abilities, homunculi, mind control, and reincarnation. Only a select few characters in the series can use magic (though many of them are main characters or protagonists), and the fantasy elements become sparser as Evillious modernizes (usually being replaced by soft sci-fi elements instead).
Ending
I won’t go into this much because it is, as the title suggests, the ending, but the world of Evillious does eventually get destroyed at the end of its one thousand years due to the actions of Nemesis, one of the Seven Deadly Sins characters. The actual destruction is not the ending--it’s what occurs afterwards that concludes the series.
Key Characters
I will not be making an exhaustive list on every important character in the series, because the cast is absolutely enormous, but here is a brief handful to give you an idea.
Eve: The “Original Sinner”--a sorceress who was responsible for kidnapping Hansel and Gretel, which is the catalyst behind the release of the Demons of Sin, and as such, most of the series events. Her story is a fair bit more complex than I’m making it sound (there are other characters, like Adam, who are equally if not more to blame), but this is the short version that you’re given through much of the series.
Elluka: A series-wide protagonist of the story. She is a sorceress from the Magic Kingdom Levianta who is functionally immortal, and seeks to collect the Vessels of Deadly Sin. She shows up in pretty much every major arc of the series.
Allen: Another series-wide protagonist, albeit a contentious one among fans. He has been in the series since the beginning, as he is the “Servant of Evil” in the Daughter of Evil series, but chronologically he was only present halfway through Evillious’ timeline. He doesn’t take an active role until later, but he witnesses much of the story’s events.
Seth: A scientist who is one of the main “villains” of the series, albeit one who is fairly inactive as an antagonist. He is responsible for the spread of HER in the Magic Kingdom, the creation of the Demons of Sin by Hansel and Gretel, and other things besides.
Irina/Red Cat Mage: Another series-wide villain, she serves as Elluka’s foil in that she is also a sorceress from Magic Kingdom Levianta who is functionally immortal and seeks to sow chaos and destruction using the Demons of Sin in every major arc of the series.
Narrative
The series can be described as a broad mix of science fiction and fantasy, generally aimed at teenagers in terms of its content level but varying wildly in terms of how light-hearted or dark it can be depending on each installment. Despite being generally non-graphic as a rule, it can cover an astonishingly wide range of upsetting topics including (but not limited to) rape, incest, parental abuse, cannibalism, body horror, genocide, and exploitation, so those who are of a sensitive disposition regarding the fiction they consume may wish to keep their distance.
In addition to the obvious point that almost all of the main cast are based heavily on VOCALOID characters, the series makes frequent use of cultural references to the Abrahamic faiths and European culture. Mothy himself is a Japanese Buddhist (at least, as I recall, he stated he was Buddhist on twitter once when asked his religion) who enjoys video games and anime, and his writing reflects that too.
In terms of order, there’s a lot of contention over which viewing/reading order is “best” for new fans to get into the series with. I personally have always pushed for release order--that is, the order in which mothy released his songs and published his novels. Evillious is at its easiest to understand in Daughter of Evil, the novel series released first, as the first two novels feature very little of the backstory, magic, or demons, and focuses instead on interpersonal relationships and political drama (drama which mirrors the French Revolution, and as such is relatively easy to understand as well). Things become gradually more complicated over time, allowing the reader to learn information organically as they get more invested, rather than dumping it on them all at once.
Many fans have argued that chronological order is best, largely on the basis that the release order of the series is not the chronological order. I strongly disagree with this. For reference, the chronological beginning of the series is the most recently released installment, so this wasn’t even possible to do for most of the series’ run.
In general though, there’s 60+ songs in the series, so don’t freak out if you don’t watch them in exactly release order. While the novels are pretty important to read in order, the songs were made with the assumption that people would miss some of them or view some before they were supposed to. Note though that there’s a handful of songs that require novel knowledge to know what’s going on (to list only one example, Handbeat Clocktower was made essentially to advertise Praefacio of Blue).
If you’re interested in more, [here] is a release order guide I have put together for this purpose. The novels are in italics.

caught up with When I Win. s’good!
Was curious about the etymology for the region names? E.g., I’m guessing from Jinjiao’s name he’s meant to be Chinese, so the Bohai region is roughly China? And Nyugen is a Vietnamese surname, so that region’s name (idr atm) is based on the same?
I’m a big fan of etymology so I was just wondering
Hope you’re well
Bohai is the name of the sea near Beijing, which is about where I imagine the region would be. Lachlan Nguyen's region, Giday, was named a bit differently, but refers to Australia. You legally can't get mad at me for that name because the canon name for Hawaii is Alola.
Aracely's region, Visia, is modeled on Los Angeles/Southern California, with Visia being a play on "visual" (a reference to Hollywood). Toril's region, Kylind, is Scandinavian. Toril herself, and all her Pokemon, specifically have Norwegian names.
Though most of these characters never appeared in the story, I did make a chart showing all 16 seeds in the tournament and their region:
Tumblr media
My background is in geography, so I've always been fascinated by Pokemon's pseudo-mapping to the real world. I like Pokemon when it maps more strongly, and dislike it whenever the games make up something completely ridiculous that doesn't fit the real-world area at all. (In recent games, the very boring "need" to have one of every generic JRPG environment - volcano, desert, ice mountain, etc. - has led to a lot of this. Kanto has my favorite region design because of how clearly it maps to Tokyo's urban nature, with the mountainous areas being kept to the fringes of the map.) Probably the most annoying aspect of newer Pokemon games is how it seems like all the research the devs did on the country they're adapting was done in a two-week tourist visit. Unova has it the worst, though, with almost no attempt to make it seem like NYC or even America beyond having a big city. So lame!

CHAKOTAYS TRIBE !!!!!! PLEASE READ IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HIS TRIBE!!!! I'VE DONE RESEARCH TO TRY AND FIND THE ANSWER!! <3
What the hell even is Chakotays tribe??? Would it be a surprise that there is an answer to that? What tribe he was based on has been questioned for a while and I’ve only seen a few people come close to a proper answer. I’ve seen people say that he is of Navajo/Dine descent or Ojibwe. I wouldn’t say any of those are wrong as his “traditions” were all over the place it made it hard to tell. Our first bit of evidence is the location he and his father traveled to in the episode “Tattoo”. Now this is my least favorite episode in Voyager, almost as worst as TNG’s Code of honor lol. So, it’s always hard to watch and I haven’t done so in a while, but I do remember they said they traveled to Central America. Obviously, this makes up a few different countries and tribes, but the most predominant Nation in this area are the Maya. I’ve been doing tons of research on this matter, and its literally impossible to compare Chakotay’s tribe to an individual Maya tribe. This is where the writers used the “Hollywood Indian” stereotype because its just all over the place. Other than the location, a few things that gives it away is the name of his tribe. They call themselves the “Rubber Tree People”. If you are familiar with Mesoamerican history, you would know that this is what “Olmec” is roughly translated to. Linguists were able to translate it from the Nahuatl word “Olmecatl” meaning “the rubber people who live on this land”. The rubber tree also plays a significant role in Mesoamerican tribes. The rubber from the tree was used to make the ball for the sacred game of “ulama”. Which played an important role of in the creation story in the Popol Vuh about the Hero Twins. The Olmecs came before the Maya and Aztec, but a lot of Olmec culture influenced their own. Whether or not Chakotay’s tribe were direct descendants of the Olmecs is unknown to me. It wouldn’t make much since historically speaking, but it would fit the narrative of the episode “tattoo”. Another indication would be one of his decedents, Ce Acatl. Ce Acatl Topiltzin was a real person who was a ruler of the Toltecs. I’ve only read a lil bit bout him so I won’t speak on what he did or who he was until I’ve done more research. Finally, one of the other MAJOR indications to me was in his short background story of pathways. I am aware that these are not canon, but it gives a glimpse into what the creators had in mind while creating theses characters. The literal first page is his father recounting a story from the Popol Vuh, and he’s talking about the Hero Twins, Seven Macaw, and the Maize God. My mind was blown when I read that, cause I started research about this a few yeas ago and was using clues from the show and figured since I had read the book before and didn’t remember any significant information about his tribe, there wasn’t any point to open it up. I read the book again at the beginning of the year and lost my mind. All of my answers were there lol. But it confirmed what I already knew. I felt hella proud cause I took the long way to get an answer and was still right. Anyways there’s still sooooo much to say about this and I’m working on a well put together paper explaining why the customs and traditions they gave him were wrong or confusing. I hope people will read cause I put a lot of research into it. I also have what I think to be some good lore that could fix a little bit of the damage that was done. More on that later though 😊.

CH 1- A Few Important Details
She faced down Human Beans. She faced down dinosaurs. What crazy thing could the world possibly throw at Adelaide next? Try another borrower and an adventure far beyond the walls.
A sequel to Only a Couple Days & Growing Pains. This work is going to be quite a bit different than previous stories, mostly because it's not directly based on a movie. I hope you enjoy!!
“Oh my God,” Adelaide breathed. She was really staring at a real-life borrower. She hadn’t seen anyone her size in over a decade!
Years seemed to pass in the silence between them, but the new person broke it first. “Come on!” she whispered urgently. “Are you crazy? There’s three whole Beans in that room!”
Adelaide sputtered. Where could she even start?
“What were you doing in there?”
“I, uh…I thought I saw…a mouse,” Adelaide half-lied.
The woman was pretty. She had wildly curly black hair and dark skin. Her big eyes were the color of chocolate, and she stood only slightly taller than Adelaide. “Well, they won’t be asleep forever,” she said. “What’s your name?”
“Adelaide.”
“Adelaide, I’m Ollie.”
“Do you live here?” Duh. Of course she lives here.
“Yeah, and I’ve never seen you around before. Where’d you even come from?” Ollie’s tone of voice wasn’t exactly suspicious. Hesitant, maybe.
“I just got here today.” It wasn’t technically a lie.
“I assume you plan on staying, then?”
“I’m not sure,” Adelaide admitted. It didn’t escape her mind that Ian and Sarah were getting serious. She always assumed it would either end badly or Sarah would move to Texas. She never considered that Ian would want to move here, but now that she was forced to think about it, she wasn’t so sure.
“Well, we have a place for you if you do.”
“Oh, thanks!” God, Adelaide forgot what it was like to be a borrower around other borrowers. They always helped those in need and always welcomed others with open doors, no questions asked. They had to stick together in such a large world.
“We should hurry while they’re still asleep. I’ll show you where the best food is, but really, you can find stuff pretty much anywhere. This Bean is super messy.”
Adelaide laughed, remembering the way she pointed out the cluttered apartment straight to Sarah’s face. “Let’s go.” Ollie said, and she roughly guided Adelaide toward her thread that hung from the kitchen counter.
Adelaide blinked as all of the information sunk in. Ollie was a borrower. She lived in Sarah’s house. She was in the middle of borrowing. She didn’t know that the humans were friendly and she didn’t know that Adelaide regularly interacted with them. Adelaide decided she wanted to keep it that way for the time being, because honestly, she missed this. She missed the camaraderie, she even missed the thrill a little bit. Maybe it was selfish, but she played along anyway.
“You go up first,” Ollie said.
“I’m probably gonna be pretty slow,” Adelaide admitted, holding up her mess of a hand.
“Holy shit, what happened?!”
“I fell on it when Ia- when a Bean…” She closed her mouth. Less is more .
“Oh my God, that must have been terrible. I’m so sorry…” Ollie looked pitifully at Adelaide’s hand. Morbid curiosity nearly made her ask for details, but she respected her privacy, and now was not the time. “You should still go first. I don’t want to leave you stranded on the floor. Better to stick together.”
Guilt crept up on Adelaide. She wasn’t exactly lying, but whatever she was doing, it didn’t feel good. She felt like she was betraying Ollie’s trust. Ollie didn’t know her, and yet she was risking her life for her.
“Okay,” she said. She prepared herself to start climbing, but the sound of something massive shifting around stopped her in her tracks. Somebody was awake. This was about to go downhill very fast.
Ollie heard it too. “Change of plans,” she said, immediately dislodging her hook and coiling it around her arm.
Footsteps rumbled in the distance, but they were rapidly approaching. It may have been a vast distance for the borrowers to traverse, but they both knew it would take a Bean mere seconds to cross from the couch to the kitchen. They had no time. Adelaide would be surprised if they made it out of this one without being noticed.
Ollie took off, but looked back to see Adelaide rooted in place. She assumed the new borrower was in shock, or was simply too scared to move. She couldn’t imagine what happened to make a Bean crush her hand, but it couldn’t have been anything good. Regardless, they had to keep moving. Ollie sprinted back to grab Adelaide’s good hand and dragged her along.
***
Ian’s eyes cracked open at the sound of voices…Voices? Plural?
Shaking the grogginess off, he stretched and slowly inched toward the kitchen. He would have heard somebody come in, right? And the voice sounded too quiet to be human, which meant…
***
They weren’t going to make it. Ollie stopped and pulled out her knife. “Go without me. Just around the corner, there’s a hole that leads into the wall. Wait for me there, and if I don’t make it back…well, I’ll make it back.” She gave Adelaide a cocky smile, but her nervous eyes betrayed her.
Adelaide still didn’t move. She couldn’t leave Ollie to deal with this on her own, especially when it was almost definitely Ian headed their way.
“Go, stupid!” Ollie yelled, shoving Adelaide as hard as she could.
Adelaide, unprepared, fell to the ground.
***
Ian had just looked over the edge of the table in time to see two people, both around three inches tall, standing down on the floor. One was Adelaide. The other had just shoved Adelaide - hard - and brandished a knife.
Ian quickly bent down and snatched this new borrower up. With his other hand, he gently scooped Adelaide off the floor.
***
“Nonononononono,” Adelaide mumbled. This was going so wrong so fast. What sealed the deal was Ian’s inexplicable and frankly idiotic decision to reach for them both.
She braced herself like she usually did, but had no time to warn Ollie. She couldn’t even see what he was doing to Ollie from her vantage point, but she felt her own body slide into his warm palm and could only hope he was being as gentle with her.
Adelaide fought against Ian on principle. Obviously it was useless. She flew through the air and could only focus on keeping her hand from getting hurt worse.
When the movement ended, she found herself on the kitchen table. Looking around, no sign of Ollie. Then she looked up. Her jaw dropped.
Ollie was stuck in Ian’s fist, fighting for her life. Ian had taken her knife and set it down on the table beside Adelaide, and he knew to keep the new borrower angled away so she couldn’t bite him.
Adelaide didn’t think about how, if for some reason, Ian wanted to hurt another borrower, he knew exactly how to do so because of his experience with her. She thought back to all the times she explicitly told him what not to do, told him all the things that made her uncomfortable, not thinking for even a second that Ian would use this information to take advantage of a smaller being. This was her fault.
“Put her down!” Adelaide yelled, running up to Ian’s other hand that rested on the table. She kicked at it repeatedly to knock some sense into him.
“What’s going on?” he asked defensively.
“Ian, she’s scared! Put her down! Now!”
“She pushed you!”
“She was saving me from you!”
Ian realized his mistake. In his attempt to protect his friend, he may have just scarred another borrower for life. Slowly, he set the girl down.
As soon as Ian’s hand opened, Ollie leapt away, scooping up her knife and pointing it up at him. “Adelaide, get behind me.” It sounded like she heard none of their conversation, too occupied with escaping.
Adelaide blinked but did as she was told. Ian regarded them both with utter confusion plastered across his giant face. He wasn’t often confused, and he certainly didn’t like it.
“Let us go,” Ollie demanded. The confidence in her voice was impressive. Only Adelaide could hear the slight falter in it.
“Um…okay,” Ian said, but he didn’t move. Adelaide knew this meant he was going to stay hands off and just observe, let them do whatever they wanted, but since he still sat there, it looked like he was still holding them captive. For all Ollie knew, he would just grab them when they attempted to escape.
“Yeah, let us go!” Adelaide echoed in support. She guessed she was keeping up the charade, then. She just hoped Ian would play along.
He didn’t say anything, but his brow furrowed. Adelaide sent him a look that said to just go with it and that she’d explain later. She knew her face was small and distant to him and therefore hard to read, but she was pretty sure he got the point.
Ollie didn’t take her eyes off Ian, but she whispered to Adelaide. “He doesn’t live here. I think he’s partnered with the Bean who does live here, which means we’ve probably got more incoming. Watch your back.”
Adelaide checked behind her, but as far as she could tell, Sarah and Kelly were still fast asleep.
It also turned out that Ian did not get her point. In fact, he interpreted it all wrong.
“Ahh, I’m uh…I’m going to get you!” he said half-heartedly, wiggling his fingers and smirking at how ridiculous his attempt at being the evil Bean sounded.
Ollie was more than confused. Was this some kind of game? His words indicated mal intent, but he didn’t sound very sincere.
Adelaide closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She looked Ian in the eye and shook her head, hoping that maybe he would get it this time.
Ian corrected himself. “Oh, um…what’s your name?” he asked the new borrower, but his tone was asking Adelaide if that was the right thing to say.
Ollie flinched when he looked at her. “I’m warning you,” she said, ignoring his question and raising her knife a little higher.
“That’s a - that’s a weird name…Warning me? For what?” This new borrower was obviously sacred, but she obviously wasn't in any danger, either. It was hard not to tease her, and it was even harder to keep a straight face.
“I’ll stab you.” Ollie said seriously. Her hand started to shake. Adelaide felt horrible.
“I see why you guys get along,” Ian chuckled. They were both so unnecessarily violent.
“No!” Adelaide blurted.
Ollie whipped her head back to Adelaide, a sudden spark of betrayal piling on top of her confusion, but she didn’t want to keep her attention off the Bean too long.
“What’d you want me to do?” Ian asked Adelaide, too impatient to play this game. He wanted to know what was going on. He wanted to know who this new person was. He hated being in the dark.
Ollie continued to look back and forth between them. She was suddenly very suspicious of Adelaide, so she repeatedly moved her knife from Ian to Adelaide and back. She wasn’t taking any chances.
“Do not point that at her,” Ian warned. He sat up a bit straighter, ready to protect his friend.
Ollie's knife dipped.
“Ian, don’t,” Adelaide said harshly. He was not going to threaten Ollie. She was just defending herself.
“I’m serious,” he said.
“So am I!”
“What’s going on?” Ollie yelled. The quick rise and fall of her chest indicated that a panic attack was fast approaching.
“Okay,” Adelaide held out her hands placatingly and slowly approached the trembling borrower. “Ollie, you’re safe. This is Ian. He’s my friend.”
“Bullshit,” Ollie spat.
“He is. I know you don’t believe me. I wouldn’t believe myself, either, if I hadn’t spent the past couple years with him.”
As Adelaide approached, Ollie backed up. Her eyes darted around, trying to find some sense of reality to latch onto. A borrower and a Bean? Friends? She backed toward the edge of the table, and Ian instinctively held his hand out behind her, just in case she fell.
Ollie sensed the massive presence and turned around. She screamed at the sight of a towering, enormous hand looming above and stumbled backwards towards Adelaide. That hand was going to grab her. It was going to take her away. Or it would crush her. She’d never see her family again.
Adelaide grabbed the woman’s shoulders, which made her jump. Ollie turned around again , feeling backed into a corner. There was nowhere to go.
“What? You’re - you’re his pet or something? You lure people out of the walls so Beans can snatch them up? Is that it?”
“God, no!” Adelaide said, sick even at the idea of such a thing. She realized that she wasn’t going to get anywhere with Ian hovering. “Ian, can you go literally anywhere else right now?”
Ian looked like he wanted to protest, but just shrugged and pushed his chair out from the table.
Ollie jumped and gripped her knife tighter at the sound of the chair scraping against the floor.
Ian sauntered over to the corner of the kitchen and leaned back against the counter with his arms crossed, watching the interaction from afar. Adelaide rolled her eyes. This wasn’t what she wanted, but it was as good as she was going to get.
Ollie watched with wide eyes. Adelaide just told the Bean what to do! And he listened!
Adelaide set her knife down on the table and kicked it away, showing she meant no harm. She hoped that wouldn’t backfire.
“Ollie, I never lied to you. I just…I left out some pretty important details,” she laughed. Ollie did not reciprocate. “I’m not his pet. We’re friends. His name is Ian-” (Ian waved) “-and he would never hurt you-”
“Then let me go,” Ollie interrupted. It seemed as though none of Adelaide’s words made it through to her. Hell, she could barely look at her, too distracted by the looming Bean.
“Okay,” Adelaide sighed. She wasn’t going to stop the borrower from leaving, but she was severely disappointed.
Ollie secured her hook on the table and turned to climb down, eyes never leaving Ian. If Adelaide was telling the truth, then the Bean wouldn’t stop her. Hopefully.
Adelaide dug her hook out as well. “Let me walk you to-”
“No,” Ollie said forcefully. She couldn’t deal with this right now. She needed time to think. And she certainly wasn’t going to let this borrower know where her home was, where her family was. Not when said borrower was allied with a Bean.
Adelaide froze in her tracks as her heart sank. She blew it. The first time she’d seen a borrower in over a decade and she blew it. All she could do was stand there and watch Ollie’s progress. She didn’t move even after the woman disappeared into the walls, using the entrance Adelaide happened upon earlier.
Small quakes on the surface of the table and the sound of shifting fabric signaled Ian’s approach. Only when he laid a finger on her shoulder did she move, shrugging him off and turning toward him. “Back off!” she shouted.
Ian was taken aback by the outburst. “Della-”
Adelaide ignored him, marching toward the edge of the table. She collected her knife, readied her hook, and started to climb down.
“Hey, maybe you shouldn’t-” Ian started, but was cut off by a very angry look from Adelaide, daring him to finish that sentence. Maybe you shouldn’t climb with your broken hand. He sighed. Both of them knew this was a bad idea, she knew this was a bad idea, which was what irritated him so much. She was going to hurt herself because she didn’t want him telling her what to do.
Adelaide tried to take deep breaths as she lowered herself down. She squeezed the thread with her legs and used her right hand to stabilize herself. Then, very slowly, eased the pressure of her legs, letting herself slide in a semi-controlled manner to the ground.
Silently, she coiled up her hook and shoved it back in her bag. She stomped over to the hole she watched Ollie disappear into. Adelaide’s intentions weren’t super clear even to herself, but she justified it as wanting cover. Or wanting a sense of familiarity. Something like that. Definitely not following Ollie.
“Della,” Ian called after her again. “Della!”
“What?!” Adelaide exploded, whipping around. She wavered a little when she had to look up at a skyscraper of a person, but she held her ground. Why were Bean’s heads always just a little higher than she thought? It was as if they grew a foot on purpose each time, just to intimidate her.
“Calm down, let’s talk about this… Uh, forgive me for being curious but there’s a whole - a whole new person on the floor sticking a, um, a knife at you. Perhaps maybe-”
Adelaide cut him off. “I want to be alone.”
Ian paused. “What?”
Oh. That wasn’t a clarifying ‘what’. He legitimately did not hear her, which felt like a real kick in the head. As if she didn’t already feel small, standing on the ground no taller than his ankles. “I said I want to be alone.”
Ian bit his tongue. “Okay.”
Adelaide took off toward the walls, running as fast as she could. Ian didn’t move the whole time, but she could feel his eyes tracking her. As soon as she made it inside, she collapsed into a seated position, catching her breath. God, Ian could be so thick sometimes!
Adelaide sat there for an indeterminate amount of time. She was right - she really did need the comfort of the walls. It had only been a couple days, but it felt like years had passed since she was in the walls back home. While these ones were not the same, they would suffice. As long as she had cover over her head and darkness to conceal herself, she would be fine. And there was the added bonus of cleanliness, thanks to the borrower(s?) who already lived there.
Adelaide said she wanted to wander the walls. Well, there was no time like the present. She hoisted herself up, dusted herself off, and began her journey into the unknown.

So Lauren, what’s that tag you keep filling with shitposts and cow videos?
So a short forever ago @reverseblackholeofwords said they wanted more info about godherd, my current original story idea that has completely taken over my life, and i figured i really should try to explain it cuz like, if i cant that probably means I should rework the story to make a bit more sense to someone outside my orbit of brainrot.
So for the elevator pitch: Godherd follows the journey of Peck, the newest caretaker of a gigantic, colossus-sized Bull known as the Aurochs, revered in a bronze age-inspired world as a god, but that is slowly weakening as civilization establishes itself.
If that sounds interesting and you wanna see the full explanation, or some very very good art I commissioned from the incredible soggedupfrog and comfymoth, see below!
What is Godherd?
The easiest way to start is that the name Godherd is very literal. There are Gods, theyre being herded. The Gods are all roughly based off of animals that early humans formed relationships with, whether they be domesticated, hunted, or otherwise used for resources. And theyre all big. Like, really big. Like more mega than megafauna big. Like shadow of the colossus big. They're animals not only big enough to ride on, but to live on.
One such god is The Aurochs, a giant bull. And living on it is the Oxpecker, the Aurochs' priest of a sort; one part caretaker, one part herdsman, one part human representative of the God to mankind. Each of the different god has their own 'priest' that lives nomadically with it, guiding and protecting it as it travels the world. The story begins when the previous Oxpecker dies, and the Aurochs chooses a new Oxpecker, who goes by Peck for short.
Peck
Tumblr media
This is Peck! She has no idea what she's doing!
Peck is the newest Oxpecker, and she is really feeling how big the shoes she's filling are. The Aurochs chose her? Not a wise sage or a priest who's trained at a temple for years, but her, some common kid just barely into adulthood? And sure, she was a cowherd with her family, but those were normal, non-diefic cows, not giant god cows that dont even listen to her half the time! Needless to say she was already gonna be stressed, and that's all without the plot nipping at her heels.
Tumblr media
^tfw God is real and right in front of you but is as inscrutable as ever and you’re just trying to keep it alive but it seems determined to just walk into the most stressful situations possible and you are barely an adult (teens, but the life expectancy is like 30 here).
The Plot Shrike
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Shrike! However bad Peck is doing, she’s doing worse, emotionally speaking.
Practically speaking she’s not doing too bad actually. As the self proclaimed priest for a pack of dieties called the Direwolves, she leads this group of giant wolfdogs into towns and settlements, taking food and killing livestock, and generally just draining the area of resources through overhunting before moving onto the next one. Which like, sucks for them, but she’s doing just fine! Really. It’s fine. She is totally fine and normal and not deeply afraid of her Gods waning in power as they become more domesticated and less wild and lashing out in an effort to grow belief through fear, of course not. Look, she just hunted down and killed a God for hers to devour that’s how normal she is. AND they’re actively hunting down another one, would a not fine person do that???
Wren
Picture to come eventually but… Wren! The most sacrificial lamb of them all.
Yeah so uh, that god Shrike and the Direwolves killed and devoured? That was hers. A mega Megaloceros aka Irish Elk. Very early on Peck comes across her and the Megaloceros’ corpse and it rattles her pretty bad. Really sets the tone for the incoming ‘twilight of the Gods’ that is happening. Wren doesn’t actually do much in the story past that point but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a deep love for her as the one metaphorically haunting the narrative. I mean, she’s been a priestess of the Megaloceros longer than Peck’s even known what one is, she’d trained and studied for it her whole life, and now it’s dead. She did everything right and her god still died. And if it can happen to her, what chance has Peck got?
Finch Fisher
Kingfisher! (Do not listen to Peck his names not Finch. It’s the language barrier.)
Caretaker for the Sailfish and another priest for a God Peck and Aurochs come across in their journey. Like Wren, he’s been doing this much longer than Peck has. Unlike Wren, who probably would’ve been very happy to meet a less experienced priest and give some friendly advice, Fisher is generally annoyed by Peck. Not in a mean way, just in a kinda unimpressed by her way. He does respect her at the end of the day though, and helps her out a bit when they cross paths.
Lark
Lark my beloved. If Fisher and Wren act as foils for Peck, Lark is a foil for Shrike, and they never even meet until the act 2 I havent fully developed yet. Another caretaker for a group of deities rather than an individual, this time a herd of Giant Bison, or Bison latifrons, and another caretaker by choice rather than by duty. But where Shrike is...Shrike, about all that, Lark is very carefree about it. He loves his fuckin job, dude. He is so thrilled to be doing what hes doing and is having a great time doing it. Peck will meet him later in the story and, without spoiling too much, he will give a much-needed perspective about the relationships between the Gods and their civilizations. If this story didn't depend on Peck being mostly solo and never staying in one place very long, she and Lark would probably be best friends.
G█████ E████
Don't worry about it! I'm still figuring out this part!
Sedge
Sedge! I literally came up with him two days ago! I have no idea where he'll go in the story yet but he has a giant bee god and they have the weirdest fuckin relationship out of any of the gods/priests, no I will not elaborate. Also fun fact, Sedge is the only title not based on a bird!
The World
The world of Godherd takes inspiration from various prehistoric and bronze age cultures. Mainly ancient Mesopotamia and Sumer, but also alot more, which you can probably already see in Shrike. It's a world still in its infancy, with civilization still developing, and that's a big part of the themes of the story.
The Themes
Again, trying not to spoil too much on a project I am still outlining, but major themes I want to focus on include religion/faith, the relationship between humans and nature, and the way cultures develop and change. As I mentioned, the Gods of Godherd are all representations of animals humans have some sort of relationship with. Cattle and Dogs, Fish, Deer and Bison. These animals have been culturally significant, or we have depended on them in some way to provide food, shelter, protection, etc. This reliance on them gave them a sort of sacred status in the world of Godherd, and they never lose that reliance, but through the process of civilization forming that aspect becomes controlled. Animals get penned in, hunted down, domesticated. What happens when you domesticate your deity?
And I cannot stress enough that none of it is out of malice or cruelty on the part of humans, this is not a story about 'humans and industrialization bad domesticating animals is slavery'. This is done out of love. Shrike's fear of the Direwolves weakening isn't because people stopped believing in/worshipping them. The worship itself is what's weakening them. Their love and care sands down those sharp edges and turns something wild and uncontrollable into something tame and known.
And the Direwolves aren't the only ones feeling the effects, they're just the ones who have been affected the longest. We've had domesticated dogs for 30,000 years after all, compared to that domestic cattle are practically new.
There's only one Aurochs. Where's the rest of the herd?
The Vibes/Inspo
Here are some things that i've been drawing inspiration from in terms of storytelling/themes;
Shadow of the Colossus (kinda obvious)
Ghibli films, specifically princess mononoke and Kiki's delivery service, and a teensy bit spirited away
This one specific moringmark comic which kinda kicked off the entire concept tbh
Legend of Zelda BOTW
and WOWIE that got very long and somehow I could STILL talk more abt it thats how passionate I am about this. I want to write a book or a comic script for this eventually but again, im still outlining right now. Hey, maybe i'll finish in time for NaNoWriMo, who knows! Either way I'll update this with any more art I commission (cuz i do plan on commissioning more) and ya know if you ever have questions or wanna know more about my bird blorbos and their giant animal friends i would love to talk about them so... 👉👈

Imagine that you decide to take teasing with Han a bit too far. He has been all over you backstage to get a quickie and you eventually give in, wanting to teach him a lesson about patience. He makes you cum and you're sucking him off so good he's trapped in a sex gaze, not really conscious of his surroundings, until you stop abruptly when he's about to cum himself, zipping up his pants and fixing his clothes while he stares confused and lost. You make him stand up with a smile, telling him he has to leave for the performance, and you leave him there in the room before he can react.
When the show is over, he comes to find you...and he's not entirely happy..
So... I read this ask at 5am this morning in bed when I couldn't get back to sleep... Insomnia is very real. But my mind immediately began to formulate a devious little story for our Han Jisung + Reader.
18+ NSFW Han Jisung + Reader // vaginal sex // rough oral sex // hair pulling // rough fingering // sex in a semi public space where you could get caught // creampie // orgasm // orgasm denial // kind of mean but hot Han //
It was probably not a good idea to have tagged along to the show. All you did was distract him, making him all needy, his grabby hands clawing at the hem of your shirt. “Come on, baby, I have to touch you before I go out there.” He said “Come on, please baby, let me get a taste of your sweet pussy.”, “Come, on… no one will know.” He teased, even though, literally anyone would know what was going on if they happened to walk in the room.
“It won’t take long.” He whispered as he pushed you to sit on the makeup table, knocking bottles and brushes all over the place. “But Hannie,” you cried as he pushed your underwear to the side and his fingers squeezed into your very tight, very wet, very needy pussy. “You need to practice your vocal warm ups. You don’t have time for this… You need to wait until after the show.” You tried to sound stern. Han looked at you devilishly. “You’re right. I do need to do my vocal warm ups.” He said low, and he knelt down between your legs, lifting your skirt and pushing a thigh wide with his unoccupied hand. Han proceeded to practice his vocal warm ups, trills… all that, right against your clit, whilst his fingers roughly fucked you. You didn’t last all of five minutes before you were screaming his name and your legs shook around his head. Surely the others would have heard you, and Han secretly loved that idea.
He looked absolutely fucked out after you came all over his face, your wetness smeared all over his mouth and chin, messing up his stage makeup. “Baby,” he said with pleading eyes. “Can you suck me off before I go out there?” he bit his lip and stared at you with Bambi eyes.
He just would not be told that he didn’t have time for this. So you decided to be the biggest fucking tease. “Okay baby, sit on that chair there. Let me take care of you, okay? Sweet sweet baby.” You had his cock out in no time. It was already rock hard, you knew he wouldn’t last long as you stroked his length and teased the tip with your tongue. “So much precum, honey.” You noted. Then you really gave it to him. A mix of long, slow strokes, and swirls of the tongue on the head, then taking him all the way in to the base, and then almost pulling off entirely. “Fuck.” You heard him mumble under his breath. You stole a look up at his face and you knew he was in a whole other world. And so very close.
That’s when you popped off entirely and packed his beautiful cock away, zipping up his trousers and slapping him on the thighs. “It’s showtime baby.” You announced brightly and left him there while he came to his senses and realised what the fuck you just did. And let me tell you he was not happy.
From your view of Han from the side of the stage he seemed absolutely fine to anyone else, except you knew better. His tight leather trousers were struggling around his package. Lucky they were black and already somewhat wet look because you were sure he would be oozing precum in there. And he seemed a lot more aggressive with his rapping.
But it wasn’t until he was walking to come off stage and he made eye contact with you that you knew you were fucked.
And it was exactly what you wanted.
You thought he was going to take you backstage and fuck you against the door to the make up room, or bend you over the sink in the bathroom while he made you watch in the mirror. You were definitely NOT expecting him to grab you arm and take you behind the stage curtain that partitioned off the unused section of the arena. You did not expect him to push you to the floor while he sat in one of the seats and whipped out his cock. “Finish what you started, BABY.” he said rather cruelly. This is the Han that really gets you going. You thought about teasing him further, but you realised that you didn’t actually have a lot of time before someone would come looking for you both. Or worse a venue worker would stumble on the pair of you in a compromising position.
Han didn’t wait for you to protest and grabbed the back of your head and pushed your mouth down over his cock until it hit you in the back of the throat. “Do you have any idea how much trouble you’re in, baby? Letting me make you come, and then you leave me like that.” he panted as he thrust himself up into your throat. He attacked your mouth with a mix of anger, aggression and so much passion. All he wanted was to feel you around him when he came. How dare you tease him like you did. He was making your eyes water and your saliva ran down your chin and hand and landing on his lap. Han loved it messy. “Look at you, taking my cock like this…” he tangled his fingers in your hair pushing you down even further than you knew was possible, and absolutely fucking your mouth without any care for you.
Why should he care when you left him like that? He threw his head back, growling as you felt his cum shoot down your throat. But he was still hard. And you hadn’t learned your lesson. He stood up and lifted you off the floor only to force you to kneel on the seat with you holding onto the back of the chair. He pushed your skirt up around your back and tugged your underwear down. Grabbing onto your hair to both hold you in place and to use as leverage, as he lined up his cock with your entrance. “I’m still so fucking hard, and you still need punishing.” He sighed and he pushed into you in one motion, slamming into your cervix and making you cry out in a mixture of pleasure and pain. Han paid no attention to your needs, this was about punishing you and chasing another climax of his own.
You smirked to yourself. You enjoyed teasing him in the hopes you would unleash this version of Han. The wild, frenzied, relentless, brutal? Han. The one where he just wanted to use you for his own pleasure. He was always so attentive and caring, and sickly sweet (which you love), but when he was like this, fuck it did things to you. He’d never fuck you like this is you merely asked. You had to taunt and push him into it. Make him snap.
Han came inside you with a loud “fuck!!!” and pulled out of you without a care for your climax. You whined at the emptiness when you were so close to coming. Your vagina clenched around nothing. You turned to see Han putting his cock away with no intention of helping you as his semen started seeping out of you onto your legs, the chair… everywhere.
“But Han?” you say helplessly. He just looked at you unamused “You’ve got five minutes to make yourself come and clean yourself up, before I send Minho to look for you.”
You were left absolutely stunned and highly turned on by what just happened. You set to work to try and relieve yourself before you were caught by Minho.
Read Part 2 here

Me explaining to u guys why you should ship Byakusho
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you like doomed yaoi? But you still want them to have a happy ending so you end up reading fanfics to cope?
Look no further, byakusho is for you. Doomed yaoi with an actual happy ending. Regardless of if you already like KHR and you don't particularly ship them, or you know absolutely nothing about this series, you should read it anyways. Also if you're wondering how they can be doomed yaoi and still have a happy ending, you should definitely read this
This segment is for people who do not know anything abt KHR so if you already know abt who Byakuran and Shoichi are, you can skip to the next bolded segment.
OKAY SO for those who do not know anything about Katekyo Hitman Reborn, it's basically like. About mafia and stuff. Also they all have different "dying will flame" types based on their personalities/affinities and stuff. Just think of them all as magical girls with guns okay don't worry too much about it they have magic and they're in the mafia
Let's go over their characters real quick.
Shoichi is first introduced in something similar to a filler episode, called "The Misfortune of Shoichi Irie" or something like that. Basically in the episode, he's delivered a package by the mafia for taking care of their kid, Lambo.
Lambo is another character (a kid from the mafia) Not under Shoichi's care, but they do meet briefly. Realizing that the package isn't supposed to go to him, he ventures to return it to Tsuna's (the main character of KHR) house, where he runs into a lot of odd and kind of gag-like funny typical shonen anime shenanigans. But this really freaks him out
He ultimately fails to return the package, and suffers from nightmares about the encounter.
Something to note though is that Lambo possesses a bazooka called the "10 yr bazooka" and if you shoot it at someone, it basically has the ability to switch you and your future self (10 years from now) for 5 minutes. This is extremely relevant.
The main characters of KHR are transported roughly 10 years into the future, and realize that they cannot return home even after 5 minutes. They then find out that there's this guy attempting world domination, and his name is Byakuran. Byakuran has access to knowledge of every parallel universe and timeline, allowing him to even consider world domination
Byakuran runs the Millefiore mafia family, and his right hand man is Shoichi. Long story short, they are introduced as the villain duo that the main characters must defeat
I'll go over some more stuff that ppl familiar with KHR probably already know, but it is necessary for my reasoning so please read through everything
First off, they are quite literally soulmates. Initially, Shoichi wanted to know what his future was like, hence he traveled back into the future twice after changing his actions. There, he meets Byakuran both times, accidentally causing Byakuran to realize his powers to gain access to knowledge from other worlds
However, because he runs into Byakuran in the future no matter where he travels or how he tries to change the future, it is basically implied that Byakuran and Shoichi are destined to meet in every timeline. Or in most at least
When Shoichi realizes this, he immediately devises a plan to take down Byakuran. His plan? Befriend Byakuran, gain his trust, and ruin all of his plans
Upon returning back to the past, he purposely erased his memories of the future, planning to have them return years later. You may be wondering how Shoichi is so confident that he could carry out the plan despite having no memory of Byakuran
Well this all really implies how confident he was that he and Byakuran’s fates were intertwined. Because how else could he be so sure that their paths would cross or Byakuran would show interest in him? Yeah. Anyways
They met in college and there is something you have to know here, and it's that they are so best friends to lovers guys they are in fact best friends
Shoichi, having no memories of Byakuran, somehow befriends him and becomes his best friend. Like, For Realsies...
When he regains his memories, he realizes much to his horror that his friend was about to game end the world, so he continues to persist with his plans despite now feeling completely awful about it
Fast forward, Shoichi is now Byakuran’s right hand man in the Millefiore family. It is important to note that Byakuran refers to Shoichi as "Sho-chan" and Shoichi refers to Byakuran as "Byakuran-san"
It may at first seem like Byakuran is being playful and Shoichi is polite, and while Shoichi does have a level of politeness, it's important to note that Shoichi and Byakuran use katakana to refer to each other when they use -chan and -san
This is in most cases actually considered rude when referring to one's superiors, and considering Byakuran is Shoichi's boss, it basically means he's okay with Shoichi referring to him rudely. Furthermore, the usage of katakana in this context just implies closeness
This information cannot be seen in the anime because you can't tell if someone is using katakana or hiragana just by listening to them speak, but it is very apparent in the manga that they are close. Also, all the other characters besides Shoichi refer to Byakuran as Byakuran-sama, so there's that too
Byakuran sent Shoichi a whole room's worth of white anemones, as most friends do
Shoichi finds this troublesome though because Byakuran is big on flower language and this means Byakuran has great expectations for him to succeed in his mission (of killing the main characters)
However it's later revealed that Shoichi had intended on betraying Byakuran, and Byakuran also reveals himself that he already knew about Shoichi's eventual betrayal, since Shoichi has always disapproved of his views
So if Byakuran already knew Shoichi was going to betray him, sending him a room of flowers meaning that he expects him to do well has no practical meaning to it besides from
1) he's just fucking with shoichi and 2) anemones explicitly mean love and passion so really he's just gay
No I'm so serious he's just gay. Like the Millefiore is made up of a bunch of squads right, and Byakuran is as mentioned above obsessed with flower language. Meaning he absolutely could not have not known what anemones generally mean outside of "anticipation/expectations"
But also each squad is named after a flower and Byakuran decided to explicitly assign Shoichi the rose squad. This man has done everything but kiss Shoichi on the lips like actually. All the fucking flowers in the world and you assign your best friend the rose ? And you send him a whole room full of flowers meaning love and passion? You gay bitch 😭😭
Anyways it has to be said that Byakuran besides being definitely not straight, is a really shit person. Like I have to say it he's awful, he's responsible for the death of thousands of people and he just casually destroyed a couple of worlds in search of more power. He views people like his toys and he admits to it
He is like a child in how everything is really just for his amusement, something for him to play with. He is even willing to sacrifice his closest allies for more power, he's just that type of guy </33 he just...does not have emotional attachments to other people
But with that said, he doesn't seem particularly hurt when it's revealed that Shoichi was not on his side anymore. However, when they play Choice, Shoichi is picked as a target and I refuse to believe that it is a coincidence and not Byakuran being petty because his best friend betrayed him💀
For those who do not know, Choice is a game that Byakuran and Shoichi made together in university, but now they're playing it irl. It's kind of like capture the flag, but the flag is one specific target, and in this case, the target for the main characters' team is Shoichi
Even when Shoichi was beaten and nearly died in Choice, Byakuran seemed unaffected by all of this and we are led to believe that he never really did care about Shoichi despite calling him his best friend
Shoichi, however, admits to the main characters that despite Byakuran being the way he was, back before he regained his memories of the future, the time he spent with Byakuran were "the best times of his life"
He genuinely enjoyed being around Byakuran and considered him his best friend despite knowing that Byakuran was going to do awful things, and he was determined to stop him. Despite it all
In Shoichi’s character song, we get a glimpse into his thoughts, and as it turns out, he really is in conflict with himself
Because in his heart, he wants to be with Byakuran, it's his place, but he chose to save the world instead, so that place is gone. He even says that he has to lie to his heart to do what he has to </33
In the song he also states that he doesn't want to break his memories and he wants to keep them safe, probably referring to the picture perfect time he spent with Byakuran before shit hit the fan. He continuously wills himself to not cry, to stop crying, because it's for the world
Girl I am crying for him. He cannot afford to act selfishly because choosing to be with Byakuran would make him the happiest and would simultaneously doom the world. But anyways
Clearly Shoichi holds Byakuran in high regard and loves him. Like not even just romantically, but in general he really does love Byakuran a lot
At the very end of the arc, the villain must be defeated though, and Byakuran is killed like straight up killed
Throughout the entire scene, Shoichi does not once show joy. He seems to accept the situation and is happy in a way that his plans have come to fruition, but his plans have always been "defeat Byakuran" rather than kill him. Shoichi had never planned to kill Byakuran, or at least explicitly said it, although I'm sure he knew that type of conclusion was inevitable
His reaction to Byakuran's death does stand out though, because every other character does seem to express joy at the victory, but Shoichi looks...blank. Perhaps shocked or in disbelief, but either ways his best friend was just killed right in front of him and he can't even be mad about it because this was the only way he could've been stopped
Shoichi is not aware of this, but before Byakuran dies, we finally get a glimpse into his thoughts as well
Byakuran admits in his last moments internally that although he did all of this because he wanted to create a perfect world, it wasn't as if he was completely dissatisfied with this one because there were also times where he felt "warm and fuzzy" as well. We then get a bunch of flashbacks in his dying moments of him and Shoichi together
BITCH???? AKDJAF 😭😭😭 only in his dying moments do we find out that Byakuran really did actually care about Shoichi and genuinely considered him his best friend because well. Context. It's his dying moments would he have dying moment flashbacks about someone he didn't care about
Like just moments of them chatting...Shoichi smiling at him... gay ass flashback if I've ever seen one 😭😭
Byakuran is someone who doesn't generally value people, he views them as toys and pawns. So the fact that he basically admitted that he did have a genuine connection with Shoichi is so :((((( this guy is just so out of tune with his emotions that he couldn't properly convey it in the end and Shoichi never actually knew about it
I say this but I feel like Shoichi did have a vague idea that Byakuran held him to some degree of high regard because. Well he was Byakuran's right hand man and they were friends for years prior to the whole mafia world domination thing
He's the only person that truly treats Byakuran like a human despite Byakuran trying to play god and everyone worshiping him. And despite being the only person that doesn't treat Byakuran like the god he wants to be, Byakuran still keeps him around
So clearly that means something but anyways that is the doomed yaoi. Byakuran is dead and Shoichi's plans succeed at the cost of his best friend's life, and he never found out in the end that his best friend probably did love him as much as he loved him. And that is where it ends
OR SO YOU THOUGHT HA
As mentioned this all takes place 10 years in the future
Meaning that the past version of Byakuran is still Alive. When the main characters return back to the past, there is a huge earthquake and everyone, including the past versions of Shoichi and Byakuran, are given memories of what they did in the future
Byakuran is taken to mafia prison bc sure it's 10 yrs in the past but like that guy is like a ticking time bomb 💀 doesn't matter though because somehow he's bailed out of jail.
Byakuran is a white boy btw :/ he lives in Italy and Shoichi is Japanese. Yes this is important because when they're in university, they meet abroad when Shoichi probably goes to Italy or something to study, but as it stands, currently Byakuran is in Italy and Shoichi is still in Japan
Byakuran is preparing to go to Japan with the people that helped to bail him out and the first thing he says is that he can't wait to meet his best friend Sho-chan😭😭😭
Thanks to the power of love and friendship, Byakuran is now no longer batshit insane and it's implied he now properly cares about his teammates btw. Anyways congrats to Byakuran for having human emotions I'm so happy for him
After returning to Japan, of course he goes to see Shoichi, and we don't know how it went exactly, but the next time Shoichi appears in the series, he tells the main character that Byakuran explained the situation to him and stuff, so it is implied that they are on good enough terms to speak abt stuff normally
Also Shoichi is kinda next to Byakuran the entire time 😔 and there is a segment where Shoichi literally shit talks Byakuran in his face which is so funny to me because it's BYAKURAN hes talking to and he just doesn't give a shit. But Byakuran pulls out the "best friend" card on him and throughout his entire speel, Shoichi never once denies that they're best friends ever
In the very last arc, Byakuran sustains extremely awful injuries and by extremely awful I mean intestines completely destroyed awful . Luckily somehow he gets around it (dont worry about it) and is chilling in the hospital and although it's a very small panel, you will see that Shoichi actually is there visiting him in the hospital
Remember how I said that everyone has magic powers and special dying will flames. Well Shoichi just happens to have the sun flame which makes him a healer so we can infer that he's also helping to heal Byakuran in the hospital along with visiting him
In this timeline they're able to retain their friendship and work towards a better future but anyways that's them my favorite doomed but not really doomed yaoi they are everything to me please ship them

MAY MECH MARATHON
So for May's Patreon-backed @tfwiki toy picture batch, I got a wild hair. After last month's Exdimensions update, I realized that the wiki was missing Legend of the Microns (Armada) Exdimensions Twist (Makeshift), the only XD Emergency Team toy I hadn't done. So I did him up. Hooray!
Tumblr media
Then the next day I was staring at the raw photos I took of Retro Hot Rod, which were in my Patreon "working" folder because I didn't have a "Retro" repository folder because I am almost certainly not going to get any others in this line, so I did his pic up... besides, it's the "flagship" toy of the line, it should get unique imagery. God he's gorgeous.
At that point I went " to hell with it" and decided that for each weekday in May, I'd do one toy pic from a random, whatever-I-felt-like selection. No overarching theme, and trying to hit a pretty broad swath of toylines and timeframes. Thus...
Tumblr media
Not sure why I picked Universe Magna Stampede next. I actually had to dig him up to take these pics. I think I'd just chanced upon his stock imagery, which was craptastic and also showed the axe split in two, which I'm certain the toy is not supposed to do, and went "no, I'm'a fix this.
And this last week's updates...
Tumblr media
I picked up Decoy Smokescreen for cheap at TFCon, and really, the wiki's Decoy coverage has been... lacking. Mostly in that they were sold in so many colors and different ways in Japan that the wiki barely touches on. Smokescreen's page is now the template for how Decoys should be, so I'll get to those in time.
Tumblr media
There's not much story here with Animated Lugnut. Most of the wiki's Animated toy imagery is stock, and while stock quality had improved since 2003 (it'd almost have to), it's still not great. Taking pics of the real, final-release toy will almost always be preferable for a number of reasons.
Tumblr media
Takara's Mega Super Collection Figure Starscream was part of the big early-2000s burst of G1 merch in Japan. A 5-inch fairly-posable soft-plastic figure with swappable parts, he and a handful of other big-name characters were made, plus several Legends of the Microns headliners.
Tumblr media
Power Up VT6 is from the "Real Gear Robots" subline of the 2007 Transformers movie series, one of a large range of 1:1-scale toys that transform from personal electronic devices into robots. He's also one of the few whose altmode is not almost totally outdated. The Cybertron-based stickers on the early Real Gears led to the belief that these were canceled /re-assigned Cybertron toys, but nope! They were made specifically for the movie line, it's just that in order to get them into production, they had to get those decals out fast.
Tumblr media
Remember Attacktix? No? Not shocking. Hasbro had an admittedly cool idea for an action tabletop game, started the line with Star Wars, and moved on to Transformers. Yes, officially, you could have Optimus Prime fight Darth Vader. Battle Ravage was one of the booster-pack common pieces (laughably officially "Rare"). You rolled his base forward a set number of "tix" (a clicky-thing in the base counted them off), then could use his spring-loaded waist to swing the mace-ball in the hopes of knocking over your opponent's pieces. There's other rules but that's the jist of it. Each booster-pack piece commonly came with a black base, but there was a roughly 1-in-8 chance of getting a silver-chrome base one, which had no gameplay differences but it was shiny. Sadly, the whole Attacktix line was cancelled after only one series of Transformers pieces were released, with several more based on Generation 1 shown off but doomed to never see release.
Next Saturday, I'll update with the pics done over the course of this coming week!
And remember, if you like these big pic jaunts, you can help make this bigger and better by tossing a tip via Patreon. Just look up "gregstfwikipics" at that site! You can even help pick a monthly theme!

I've looked up different people's takes on what Deku's Quirk would be if he had a natural one. One idea I frequently come across is Heat Absorption (which combines Hisashi's fire quirk with Inko's attraction quirk). However, what if this idea was taken further? What if Deku could take the heat energy he absorbed and use it to enhance his physical abilities (like Sunspot from the X-Men comics)?
Hi Wiz! Dollar-store-quirks here, with the shadow of an idea! (I have been so drained of ideas, you don't even know). I saw a ask about Izuku inheriting a possible Fire Breath x Attraction of Small Objects Quirk and I'd like to add my two cents! as in, I have two other takes on the concept.
My first concept is a little less directly related to his parents. I'm calling it Will-o-Wisp, and it leans a little more into the psychic nature of his mother's quirk. It might work where Izuku can breath out ghostly incorporeal "fire" which he can control - that's both telekinesis and fire breath! Only when this incorporeal fire makes contact with a physical object will it turn into real fire, which he might not be able to control. There might be a maximum limit of how much ghostly fire he can control, and he might unlock the power to choose when his ghostly fire becomes physical, or some way to control his fires after they become physical (say, if some amount of ghostly fire stayed incorporeal and that allowed him to influence the physical fire).
Second, I think there's potential in a very direct mix. Let's call it Attraction of Fire. This would function by allowing Deku to draw in and control fires near him, possibly extending the length of its fuel or managing its temperature. This would depend on fire from outside sources, still leaving Deku in an underdog position for narrative reasons and requiring a lot of inventiveness to make it feasible. Fire might still burn him, giving him the same self-destructive nature as in canon. And it'd give him plenty of need for support equipment and collaboration with other heroes, which is also meaningful for story reasons. These are mostly narrative reasons why I think this is compelling quirk, but aren't those the best reasons? If someone wrote an AU with another student gaining One for All, I think this kind of quirk would allow Izuku to remain in the story in roughly the same position in Class A, power-wise.
Thanks for reading all this! I hope this is a fun addition to the discussion!
Wow, @dollar-store-quirks. Now there's a name I haven't seen in a while. Hope you're doing okay. And here's the post for any of you that are curious about it.
I'm not sure if any of these are in the cards for Izuku, at least in their entirety. I too have discussed absorbing heat for Izuku's power, but why would it enhance his body? Nothing about either parent Quirk implies that would be possible. Shooting the fire back out makes more sense because that's in line with what the father does. Izuku breathing out fire that he controls makes some sense, but having it turn intangible is such a deviation that I struggle to imagine it fitting as a power. And honestly, I don't even think he'd be able to even come close to the canon story line with that kind of power. On that note, you're final idea does have some merit. I do think attracting fires makes sense for Izuku. Heck, it's even what based his Quirk Marriage around. The thing is though that attracting fires is such a specific power that I struggle to think of anything that interesting you can do with it, let alone have it be include amongst the Heroics Course. It's good for a firefighter and that's it. There's making a character an underdog and making his power barely useful. It's why I felt the need to be as liberal as possible with Izuku's potential powers. Something that'd fit the parent Quirks, yet still make standout abilities in their own right.

OC Origins Tag
Thanks for the tag @paeliae-occasionally! This is a new one for me.
I’ve got a crap ton of characters so I’m only going over a few.
To be honest these are going to be a bit of a bummer, sorry. (CW: Grief and Death)
Narul
Narul comes from a number of places. His name actually comes from a little fantasy story I wrote during middle school. It was about a world of underground people below the Sahara desert, that country was called Narul. The name Narul is literally the only thing leftover from that. Narul's character is based on something that happened to me when I was still in highschool. I wasn't very popular and I was kind of a quiet person, people didn't really mess with me but aside from a few people they didn't talk to me all that much either (the black trench coat and combat boots that I insisted on wearing probably didn't help.) One place where I was active was in drama and there was a person that I had been talking to for a while and I thought we were pretty close friends. One day they came up to me and said "When I first met you, you were kind of scary, but you're actually pretty cool." Now I know that was supposed to be a compliment, but something about the fact that they had thought I was scary really bothered me. It sort of messed with my self-esteem for a while. Narul is "scary" but he is in actuality a very emotional and caring person, and he struggles with the idea that other people are scared or intimidated by him. Narul is also sort of meant to be a way for me to address some of my fears and thoughts about time and forgetting and losing the people around you.
Ninma
So Ninma came from a number of places. Her name was mostly just thought up, roughly inspired by a few different Sumerian/Akkadian names and places.  As for Ninma herself, she’s of course inspired by characters like Ellie from the Last of Us, Laura from Logan, and Koda from Brother Bear. She’s also inspired by a couple people that I know in real life, namely my partner and my brother. When she grows up and is with Jani in particular, she’s inspired by my partner. Ninma is meant to be the opposite of Narul, she’s rash and clever, charismatic. Though Narul is of course bigger and stronger and is the main POV, in terms of their effect on the world around them, Ninma is by far the more important character. The meaning that she is able to find in a human life is at the core of the first three books of my WIP (The Ninma Cycle).
Akard
Akard’s name comes from the city of Akkad, the capital of the Akkadian Empire, arguably the first in history. He is inspired by characters like Cyrus and Alexander the Great, as well as other famous rulers. A lot of the story as a whole revolves around the theme of Death (Narul’s inability to die, war, sickness, growing old, etc.), Akard’s terminal sickness, Asherdul’s Bane, is meant to serve as a sort of driving force behind his actions. Of course we all know that we have a limited time, but for Akard it's more real. He has to finish what there is to finish before his time is up. In that he acts as the opposite side of the coin to characters like Narul and Mikrab or Batricca, all of which have so much time that it sort of just becomes meaningless. Akard initially started as a much more villainous and evil character, the sort of typical “evil lord” sort of character, but as I thought about him more he changed. Akard is genuinely a good king (as good as absolute monarchs can be at least), he’s brave and fair, and even the terrible things he does, he does for a reason. It just so happens that these reasons endanger the MCs.
Penetinos
Speaking of characters with terminal illness, Penetinos is directly inspired by and modeled after my grandfather, he’s probably the most blatant character basis. He was a history teacher, quiet and kind. His hands shook from an accident when he was a kid. He read constantly and he introduced me to online gaming.  He had cancer almost the entire time that I knew him. It was pretty easy to forget about it sometimes, until it wasn’t. For the last couple of years, we all, including him, knew that the end was coming. I’ll admit I’ve never been particularly comfortable with the idea of death. As a kid I’d run into the bathroom in the middle of the night and cry thinking about death, and just the thought of things ending. He never seemed all that bothered by it, at least in front of me. We never really talked about it, but something about his attitude and seeing how he dealt with his illness helped me come to terms with that sort of thing. A big part of my inspiration for writing this story was addressing my own thoughts and anxieties about the passing of time, losing people, and death. He passed last year.  I regret that I didn’t talk to him more. We were both sort of quiet people, and as I got older and he got sicker, we just had less to talk about. I think that in some ways, his introducing me to things like Everquest, is a reason why I got interested in fantasy and thus why I started writing this book. It only feels right that he should have some part in Kobani.
Istek
The name Istek is pretty much just gibberish, just a random sound that I made which I turned into a name, even in Kishite it's not really a name, his name means Seagull. Istek is also inspired by one of my grandpas. He was the opposite in a lot of the ways of the person that inspired Penetinos. He was loud, he liked to wrestle, he would tell stories about his time in the navy and growing up in the middle of nowhere, he would spend hours at estates hours and come back with old national geographics and vintage toys to give to his grandkids. It's this sort of bigger than life personality that inspired Istek. It's not a coincidence that they were both sailors. He passed my freshman year. Istek is all about memory, he tells stories about his adventures all the time, he brags, he wants people to remember him. Even as he lives life to the fullest he also holds onto the past. My grandfather had Alzheimer's and as a result he would often forget that he had told us a story. And so he would tell the same story multiple times. There’s a lot of stories of his that I vividly remember because of how many times he told him. I think part of the reason he told those stories so many times was to make sure that he remembered them too.  I’ve dealt with a lot of anxieties that I might also start to forget things about myself too one day. Narul’s fears about forgetting the people he cares about as time passes is inspired by that anxiety, as is Mikrab who has forgotten everything about his past. Now Istek, being queer is entirely something that I made up, I’m pretty certain that my grandfather wasn’t queer. My grandfather was also a very tall and strong man, so Istek being short is sort of a personal joke of mine. In some ways, Istek is who I wish I could be, free and happy, secure in himself and his place in the world. Istek doesn't let himself worry about the future, not when there is so much in the present to be enjoy and be thankful for.

Watching Primos, and it’s not as bad as everyone is complaining about. It was a very funny joke when Nellie asked “was that always her name?” When referring to Lucita. There are parts of the show I can relate to even though my summers were completely different from Tater’s I can see relate to her. I grew up going to sleep away camp (where I’m working at this summer) and I can relate to not having personal space, or quiet and gross bathrooms.
When it comes to stereotypes and it not being accurate to Latina culture. Primos is based off Natasha Kline’s life. Kline is open about using her childhood as inspiration for her show. I think that’s something people keep forgetting. People complaining the stereotypes in the show, the show is based off of Kline’s real life, it’s her story.
Unpopular opinion but it’s ok to include stereotypes of YOUR community in YOUR work. Especially if you seen those stereotypes in your life. I obviously can’t speak for Mexican-Americans since that not my community. But I can speak for Jewish Americans, and there are so many stereotypes from my community I’ve seen growing up and I’ve experienced from my own family. Out of the roughly 28 tropes listed on TV Tropes A Nice Jewish Index I’ve personally seen or experienced at least 12 of them. And there are stereotypes not list that I’ve experienced. If I was to make a cartoon based of my own childhood attending sleep away camp and include many stereotypes would that be problematic? No, but if a non Jew did the same it would be problematic. It’s the same thing for Primos since Natasha Kline herself is Mexican American and this is based off her own experiences we should be ok with the stereotypes. Life is full of stereotypes and we should laugh at them when they happen in our lives. (I’ve been joking about the stereotypes in my life for a long as I can remember)
Idk where in going with this post, I’ve been sick for a few weeks with the camp cold. I’m all here for valid criticism but please watch the show first.

The raison d’etre for this trip, in its conception, was to see the Christmas markets of Germany and the UK. I don’t know if I’ll say that is actually how it turned out, given how many UK markets Mom has taken a quick turn around and then decided to go do something else, like sit in a pub or sit in a different pub*. It must be said that, in this department, Germany beats the UK as rightly and soundly as [insert inappropriate WWII joke here]. The Christmas ‘markets’ in the UK are largely consisting, at least based on my survey of four large and major ones, repackaged items that are largely not handcrafted by the seller, a lot of food stalls, and, bless it, a number of bars. Not a bad tme if I lived in any of these cities but assuredly not something worth crossing that Atlantic for.
But the German Christmas markets were mostly as advertised. Even the more commercial among them had foods that carried the air of the traditional, made extensive effort to continue the line of culture that had been there for generations, and curled around themselves in long circles that invited more of a chance to meander than a strict row system that kept you going down a shooting gallery of booths. The Frankfurt market, even straight off the plane ride with a roughly 3 hour night, dazzled with its sense of history and its easy strolls through to the bar. It was at this market that I tried what I might call, “The drink of the trip”
Fuerzangenbowle, the best hot alcoholic drink I had never encountered even in writing, even in passing, truly a genius invention.** What this is, is mulled wine, already getting points from me, but then they soak a cone of sugar in rum and light it on fire so it drips down into the wine. I would have told you i wouldn’t care for that because it would make it too sweet, but it really doesn’t. What it does, is add a note of toasted caramel to the wine, a slightly burnt taste that adds to the larger whole. It is so good, that I am going to go home and see if I can buy some kind of piloncillo that’s small enough to work for the single serving cup. I don’t know that I would try and make it for a crowd, I’ll leave that to the professionals, but I do love lighting things on fire as my wife will, sighing heavily, attest to.
All of them were good, and Cologne in general was much more charming than I had been led to believe it would be, but it was there we came upon the best market of them all:
The old town market.
We stopped there simply because it was the next place on the little train that takes you from market to market, but I was immediately captured by it. Busy and crowded, people miling around each other like little bees, the hum of their voices uniting into a low buzz. A violin plays “Come Emmanuel” at the door, and the long, high voice of it carries above and weaves through. The bright and bustle as the lights glow against the darkness, fairytale in the way that I could never hope to describe to another human being. I had to take a breath as i stepped inside. It was a Christmas market as you imagine them, a watercolor made real, the cold of the air touching your cheeks, the smell of mulled wine in the air, all of it immediate and total. All of it something that somehow seemed a dream, as if i’d been pulled into a book though admittedly in my fairy story slightly less people would be wearing beanies and puffy jackets, but what is fantasy without a little grime on it?
In this one it also seemed that the traders had been vetted to some extent in the main square, and so was near-exclusively people who had made the objects in their booths. We spoke to people when possible, given my hilariously limited German, about their stuff, and gawked at it, and I bought a little mug for my daughter with her name on it, that the woman painted right in front of us.
Whether the rest of the markets were a disappointment*** or not was hardly material at this point, because my mother was so entranced by the old market. She spoke of it all the time on the trip, as we were going through other markets, as we sat in a pub, as we put on our pajamas. I think it will probably take the crown for experiences on this trip. I can think of only a few that might unseat it. My mother’s face as we wandered through the market was all the confirmation I needed that this was the right choice.
And so I am delighted to inform myself that Germany was a success. I said I would never return there, I let myself be talked into it, and I had a wonderful time.
*This sounds like a complaint, but is full of delight. I have two favorite things to do when I travel: Walk miles and miles around a city (absolutely not happening here, there is a hot short list of people in my life who can walk as fast and far as I can) and go to pubs, bars, etc where there are a fair amount of locals and people like to talk. See my unwieldy essay on how much I like people for reference.
**The best mulled wine I had, however, does in fact go to the UK. Specifically, Peacock’s Tea Room in Ely had the absolute best mulled wine I had in the entire trip, the seasoning was exceptional, it was not overly sweet, the cup contained some soaked fruit and sliced almonds, it was truly exceptional and I know I’ll be trying to style my mulled wine off it for a long while.
***Things are rarely a true disappointment to me because I operate on the idea that everything in life is a lesson, is information, and if it wasn’t what I built up in my head, that is information, and it’s information I can pass on to others. Sometimes i love a miserable story as much as a successful one. Attitude can change the color of many situations, and I tend to be very adpatable and cheerful, and also i froze to death or it was crowded or whatever whatever is more often than not, not what I will carry away from any given situation. But, this is somewhat unique to me and I’ve spent a long time cultivating a sense of appreciation for these things, so I felt a little bad for my mom.
