BSD Official Guidebook Gongeroku - Uemura Yuto & Ono Kensho interview
※ As usual, I'm heavily relying on automatic translators for this, so if you notice any mistake, please feel free to bring it to my attention! I'll be posting the original text in reblogs.
Thank you for your hard work in recording seasons 4 and 5. The story has now come to an end, with the story left “to be continued”¹.
Uemura: In “Two Hours Later,” Atsushi (Nakajima) and Ryunosuke (Akutagawa) trust each other; the exchange “Just the two of us?” "Do we need more?” also occurs in episode 53, but this time Atsushi is smiling a little. He says “Let's go, Akutagawa”, and takes on the challenge. I think it was a very hopeful ending, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the relationship between the two will develop. Also, I'm curious about Akutagawa's outfit. He had something on his head… Ono: That's right. (Akutagawa) looked strong. It seems like he's regained his sense of self, so what will happen next? What are Akutagawa and Atsushi fighting against? I'm curious about it all. I felt like the 5th season ended on an interesting note.
The story ended with Atsushi and Akutagawa fighting together, but looking back at the first season, what do you think has changed about Atsushi and Akutagawa?
Ono: I think the biggest thing is that now they're able to have a conversation. Uemura: That's right. At first, the two of them couldn't have a conversation at all. Atsushi said “I don't understand you at all” (Episode 23). Ono: The relationship started out with each saying “this is what I think'”, not listening to what the other person had to say, and then fighting, so that's where the biggest change happened. I really felt this change during the conversation on the ship² at the end of Season 3 (Episode 37), where they say: “Don't kill anyone for six months. Then you will come to see the truth in its simplest form”. Uemura: Atsushi started out thinking “I can't survive like this”, but then he joined the Armed Detective Agency and found himself in a position to save people. In the process, he made various choices, thinking about what Dazai (Osamu) would do, and what his colleagues at the Armed Detective Agency would do. He was finally able to accept himself and think that maybe there was a meaning to his life. In particular, the movie Bungo Stray Dogs: DEAD APPLE and the conversation with the headmaster (episode 31 part 2) were major turning points for him. He was able to face his inner self. I think that it was through these experiences that he was eventually able to make that “promise” with Akutagawa. Ono: Akutagawa is always one step ahead of Atsushi. But Atsushi is grows up really fast, right? He is the main character after all (laughs). So I think that Atsushi is gradually beginning to see Akutagawa³. Uemura: That's right. I think Atsushi originally had a very narrow vision. But after going through various experiences, his vision has finally broadened. And I think he's now able to see Akutagawa clearly. If you have a narrow vision, you can't accept any way of thinking different from your own; but as your vision gradually broadens, you start to accept that there are other ways of thinking, too. I think that's why he was able to have a dialogue.
On the contrary, what do you think remains the same about Atsushi and Akutagawa?
Uemura: Atsushi has grown and become more confident, but he still panics when he hits a wall. I've been playing Atsushi for a long time, so I'd like him to be to take a decision more quickly, but Wakabayashi Kazuhiro (sound director) would tell me, “It's too early, not yet” “It's not time yet”. When you can see what's ahead, you just want to move forward, but Atsushi takes many detours and puts his full effort into each step. I think that's what makes Atsushi unique, so I always try to cherish it. Ono: One thing that remains unchanged about Akutagawa is that he is always aware of Atsushi. I think that the relationship between Akutagawa and Atsushi, with Dazai in the middle, has not changed at all, and Akutagawa is the one who is acutely aware of that. In Season 5, Akutagawa says that fighting alongside Atsushi is “a trial (that was given to him by Dazai)”, but even though he says that, the fact that he's also aware of Atsushi has not changed.
The “trust” between the two was evident in their deadly battle against Ochi Fukuchi (episodes 53 and 54).
Ono: When Akutagawa was wounded by Fukuchi Ouchi's Amenogozen, and he says "You fool, get out of here" as he lets Atsushi escape, in the original comic Akutagawa has a sad expression on his face. However, in the anime, he has a desperate expression during the fight. The difference is very striking. I felt like the expression in the anime was an expression that matched the visual flow. That left a strong impression on me.
Afterwards, Akutagawa, who has turned into a vampire, faces Atsushi at the airport (Episode 60).
Ono: By this time, Akutagawa had completely become a vampire. I was able to record the scene with Uemura-kun, but… Uemura: Ono-san seemed to have a hard time. Atsushi tries his best to talk to Akutagawa, saying “It's me, don't you recognize me?”, but he can't get the conversation going. When he called out “Akutagawa!”… Ono: “Shhhh”. Uemura: That was all. But there was a moment when he regained a little sense of self. Ono: That was the toughest one. I put a lot of thought into how to express it. Uemura: In that scene, Atsushi was hoping that he would regain his sense of self. I think that was a kind of dynamic that had never existed before.
Having performed for so long up to season 5, what does “Bungo Stray Dogs” mean to you two?
Ono: This is a project that I'm putting my life on the line for. Akutagawa also puts his life on the line, so I feel like that is something we have in common. I think there is something I can learn from Akutagawa's desperation and his approach in facing challenges. When Akutagawa first appeared in the first season, Wakabayashi-san told me: “He doesn't sound strong”. It's a statement I still recall. The recording of Akutagawa started from there, so I hope I have been able to improve on that now, and I would like to continue to do my best without letting my guard down. Uemura: After recording the scene with Atsushi and Akutagawa, Wakabayashi-san said: “It looks like both of them have a lot more to scream”⁴. Ono: Oh, did he say that? Uemura: That's right. I'm so grateful for receiving such words. “I want you to go even further”, isn't that what they meant? I feel that if Bungo Stray Dogs will continue from now on, I will have to do something even further than that. Ono: I see. I guess I'll have to give it my best as well. Uemura: Personally, I would like to see what happens to Atsushi in the future, so I'm looking forward to the next developments.
In the fifth season, Dazai refers to Atsushi and Akutagawa as “the soukoku of a new era”⁵. In season 5, there was a scene where the soukoku duo of Dazai and Nakahara Chuuya played an active role; do you think the two of you can lead a new era?
Ono: Uhm, neither Akutagawa nor Atsushi are as smart as Dazai (laughs). Uemura: Right. I would like to see more of Atsushi and Akutagawa joining forces… But Chuuya and Dazai are both still very active (laughs). Ono: Yes. Both of them are still amazing. I don't think Akutagawa and Atsushi can realistically compete. Well, let's try our best to achieve that goal. Uemura: As the story progresses, I think it would be great if the two of them could become a duo known as Soukoku. It's different Soukoku from Dazai-san and Chuuya, it's a Soukoku that is unique to the two of them.
¹ The 「未了」 of the episode 11 ending ² This bit confused me, but they are indeed using 「船」 ship. They're probably referring to how the scene was showed as flashback while Atsushi was on Fitzgerald's ocean liner. ³ 「それでだん だん敦にも、芥川が見えてきたんだ なと思いますね。」 not sure about this one. Began to see Akutagawa in his own eyes? Began to see Akutagawa in himself? ⁴ 「まだまだ2 人とも叫べそうだな」 not sure about this one either 😔 Is it “it looks like both of them can scream even more”? ⁵ Unless I'm widely mistaken, this is a misattribution; Dazai says this in episode 24, not in season 5 (please correct me if I'm wrong). I don't remember Dazai saying anything similar in season 5.
#Nothing particularly interesting tbh but I wanted to check out what this was about.#Basically just made while taking breaks between one studying session and the other (╥﹏╥)#I'll be checking out Asagiri's words next...#atsushi nakajima#ryūnosuke akutagawa#sskk#shin soukoku#bsd#bungou stray dogs#mine#I am well aware that in theory the role of a translator is to *understand* what the text is saying–#and convey that meaning rather than do a literal translation#But I just can't do it! Whenever I'm rephrasing I'm always second guessing myself.#“Am I making them say stuff they didn't mean?” that's what I always wonder... So I always end up going for the most literal route 😭😭😭#I'm sorry but like. I wholly lack the confidence for saying that my interpretation of someone's words is the correct one.#And that would happen in any language...

2018.11.28 BACK COAT〜裏裁判 UraSaiban / Backdoor Trial [Review]
Official Site here Official Twitter here Press Coverage 1, 2
Synopsis: After investigation, witnesses to a murder decide that the perpetrator is Innocent. Because of this, the witnesses are left once again to go back and recount their version of what happened and what of the victim. There are only 3 rules in this scenario: The real perpetrator is within their group; you must choose Guilty or Innocent; you must decide there and then even if it’s not the real perp. What happens next?
CAST and CHARACTERS

* Non-Spoiler Overall: This was great! It’s the style and theme of story and stage that I love. I absolutely love; people forced in a room that they can’t escape and they suspect each other and there’s no trust and there’s underlying secrets and motives and people turn on each other and people die - everything I love in my dark, messy stories! And they executed it so well! I enjoyed it so much! I loved the story, the mystery, the twist parts, the punch ending. It was all so good! And at the peak / climax of the play, the acting from all of them was phenomenal. It was so well done. The only thing that stopped me from being so invested and so emotionally into it was the fact that the guy next to me was snorting and sniffing up his snot every 10 seconds throughout the entire play and drove me absolutely mental. Rating: 7/10. If that dick hadn’t been there to ruin my experience, this could’ve easily been a 8 - 9 rating I think.

Spoiler Review
Main Plot - 12 people (9 witnesses, 1 accused and 2 court staff) have been gathered to decide whether the accused, Enjyouji Aya, should be found guilty or innocent of killing Saku’s sister Ruin. However, when the final judgement is made, only 7 people find her guilty, while the actual brother and his childhood friend Tatsuya rule her innocent. Saku pleads for them all to go back to the beginning and to recount everything they witnessed. Because there is non consensus the court staff lock them inside the room and have to start all over again. No one can leave until everyone agrees on one judgement. And there are three guidelines to the lock down which are:
1. The perpetrator IS within their group. 2. You must choose (one) Guilty or Innocent. 3. You must decide there and then even if it’s not the real perp.
So in the story we go through every person’s account and experience that they had with Rui. At first everyone is very positive saying how much they enjoyed her company and how much of a joy she was to be around. But then they get to Aya and she breaks it down. She turns around to Saku in a half-evil-cackle and says ‘do you really think they’re telling the truth? Do you really think this is what they think of your sister? She was evil. She was horrid!’ and she cracks through the rest of the characters’ true personalities. It soon comes to light that she was physically and mentally abusive to everyone around her, and they say the only way she was acting such a way was because Saku himself was being to harsh on her. Apparently he was strict in that: she must go to school, she must eat properly, she mustn’t go and stay out late, she mustn’t have a boyfriend, and she felt that all her freedom had been taken away, and in turn that led her to take her anger out on the neighbours and everyone who cared for her. ‘And that’s why,’ Aya begins, ‘when she asked me to help her fake her suicide so she could shock and knock some sense into you (Saku), I just.... let her die.’ Saku begins to break down; he knows he was strict on her but that was because he didn’t want her to get hurt again, he wanted her to be safe so she didn’t end dying like their parents did. But obviously he was too strict and it made her go strange and mentally unwell. But towards the end of the stage, Ichijo Hikari speaks up ‘it was you that drove her to her death. She was being manipulated. I saw her... I saw her and Tatsuya talking,’ which brings Saku’s childhood friend underfire. Here, Tatsuya goes into manic laughter and completely cracks, he says he wanted to ruin what was left of Saku’s family because he was sick of seeing them (Saku & Rui) making fun of him (Tatsuya) and his situation (his family abandoned him and when he finally refound them, they acted like they didn’t know who he was). He said ‘I know you were laughing at me. Pitying me. There’s no way you were really being kind.’ When Tatsuya was left alone, Saku became his friend and he brought him home and let them have dinner together and everything. But Tatsuya, being hurt too much and too deeply, always thought Saku was just being malicious (which is completely wrong), so he wanted to get revenge: that was manipulating Rui and giving her the idea of ‘pretend to kill yourself. It’ll be the biggest surprise to Saku and it’ll make him stop being so strict on you’ so silly Rui goes through with it and that’s what led to her death. By this point, everyone is crying and emotionally ruined, and the staff of the court ask them to decide who should be held accountable for the death of Rui. Saku puts his hand up. Everyone protests that he’s innocent but he says ‘I found a letter from her. It came through the mail a year after her death. I did her wrong. I just want to go and see my sister.’ so he begs everyone to judge him ‘guilty’ so he can get the death penalty and join his sister. Of course, everyone doesn’t want to do this but it’s either this or they have to choose another among them to be found Guilty. And the stage ends with them judging him ‘guilty’, he gets on a wooden crate, puts the noose rope around his neck and lights out.
*
I am not giving the story justice. The intricacies and seeing them break down one by one, and seeing the scenes with Rui and the others. It was just phenomenal acting and the way things came to light and revealed were so well done and so great! I really wish I had been able to see this one or two more times. Because I was so invested and I found everyone’s acting to be top notch! There are some specific scenes and things I would like to talk about though:
☆ Domoto Shohei’s acting when he goes from ‘normal childhood friend’ to ‘batshit crazy’ to ‘realising what he’s done and just breaking down completely’ was so amazing to witness. He flowed so effortlessly between these stages and emotions! I was SO impressed! This was definitely his best acting I’ve seen of him so far! I cannot give enough praise to how well he did. I felt so sorry for him too! You should HATE HIM. You should HATE how he manipulated Saku’s sister, but then you learn that he just wasn’t loved and he was abandoned and his parents are more to blame for his messed-up-ness than him. And you pity him for assuming Saku’s actions were through malice rather than Saku genuinely wanted to look after him. And this huge misunderstanding led to him doing something so unforgivable. Yes you should hate him but the character’s story and Domoto’s acting just... you can’t hate him at all!
☆ I really enjoyed Arima Ayaka’s acting too. I love how Kasumi went from ‘oh yeah she was a darling and I loved spending time with her’ to (when everything gets revealed) ‘she was abusive! She found out that me and Toshiya were dating and she threatened to leak the information. She also hit my all the time! She fucking sucked!’ which was great acting. The scene where Rui is hitting Kasumi had some really good acting. The actors themselves would push each other and a lot of parts were physically real so I was impressed with the trust between the actors and such for those moments.
☆ Sena did a great job as the sister. She had very few scenes because she was only really in the flashbacks but she did a great job! She could switch her feelings and emotions very well which was great! I love how her outfit is a white dress which could mean so many things: innocent, death, ghost, haunting etc. Good choice in clothing!
☆ I was super surprised to see Yashima Yakuma in this! I didn’t know he was in the cast! I am bias. I really like his face and his acting and this role of ‘serious’ and part of the court team was great!
☆ I really liked Hikari as a character. At first he just seems like a hungover, irresponsible guy, but then we learn that he’s got the key information to unlocking the mystery of ‘what happened to Rui’. He’s a sweet guy the entire time. He tries to calm people down and tries to stay level-headed and he really is the only character out of them who’s guilty of NOTHING. Also I loved his hair, but that’s irrelevant to the story.
☆ Kudos to Emi who did this dramatic reveal right at the beginning. She’s the one that’s like ‘oh quit the act everyone! We all hated her! Admit it!!’ and her craziness lasts the entire performance. She really does not give a shit and she just lets all the secrets out! I really love how when she’s telling her stories of Rui, she did things like get on the table and prance around and such.
Like I said, I am not doing this story justice and I wish I’d seen it a few more times so I could get more information and find more scenes to love. And as mentioned above, I had the biggest sniffler and snorter next to me the entire time which that took me out of the story SO much. I literally had to watch the stage with one finger in my right ear so I could somewhat block out the idiot’s noises. But alas, I hope this short, short review will suffice.
*
And that’s all! I have a SHIT TON (I’m not joking) of reviews and reports I am behind on, dating back to like June I think which is BAD. I need to get this shit done asap seriously. I must! xD

『Songful days SEASON2 with "H-el-ical//"』 Altern-ate- acoustic ver. rehearsal snippet
Here’s something to whet your appetite for Hikaru’s upcoming event 『Songful days SEASON2 with "H-el-ical//"』. A short recording from the Songful days rehearsal featuring a lovely acoustic version of the H-el-ical// debut single “Altern-ate”. Cannot wait for the event, I am sure it’s gonna be nice. However, I am wondering what she will be singing. Right now she only has two officially released anisongs. If we add “JUST DO IT” and “The Sacred Torch”, it’s a total of four but still not anything close to the amount of songs that ReoNa sang during her performance. I feel like she might be singing some Kalafina? Or I guess she could cover all sorts of anisongs. Either way, she will have to come up with a few more pieces, otherwise it’s gonna be a very short live. Hopefully that Wataru Hatano person won’t waste too much time doing some random narration.
───※ ·❆· ※───
I barely know anyone on this line-up but it looks pretty decent. Hopefully this will provide some exposure for Hikaru. *fingers crossed*. There is no mention of a live stream option so I am afraid we will have to sit this one out T_T

BSD Animate Times Interview
Uemura Yuto (v.a. Nakajima Atsushi) & Miyano Mamoru (v.a. Dazai Osamu)
-
Overall, what’s the difference between Season 1 and 3?
Mamo: Comparing to Season 1, my impression towards Atsushi-kun has changed a lot.
Yuto: Since being rescued by Dazai-san and became a member of ADA, I think Atsushi-kun started to recognise the good deeds of his own ability. Meanwhile, he also faced the question of how to use his ability properly, but I think he is getting closer to the answer.
It has been three years since I performed in Bungo Stray Dogs. This project enabled me to host radio programme as a MC, which is a new challenge for me. I think I shared some similar experience with Atsushi as well.
-
In terms of acting, what is the difference between Season 1 and 3?
Yuto: Rather than being the same old story that we used to, I think there is various new elements introduced in Season 3. Under this changing circumstances, I always wonder how should I portray Atsushi.
-
How about you, Miyano-san?
Mamo: I think Dazai has been well described from various perspectives. In series of Fifteen Years Old, Dazai’s personality has been enriched. His personality has always been stuck in my head, which I can’t easily forget.
Dazai’s changing perception in life and death also enabled me to have a deeper understanding towards him. I feel more related to Dazai since then.
-
After performing in Fifteen Years Old, did this make any impact of your state of mind?
Mamo: Although Dazai has been a prodigy since then, I still find Dazai somehow acts like a child. I think Dazai still concern more about himself, rather than showing care to others during that time. I think Dazai’s encounter with Oda Sakunosuke, Akutagawa Ryunosuke and fellow ADA members is when Dazai truly started to grow.
-
What do you think of each other after performing in BSD for such a long time?
Mamo: Bungo Stray Dogs is the first anime that we are actually working together with. Audiography director (Wakayabayashi Kazuhiro) once told me, ‘Your junior is now the protagonist, please take good care of him.’ , whilst I answered ‘No way’ (laugh)
Together: (laugh)
Yuto: I heard about that recently!
Mamo: No! I didn’t mean I don’t like you! Since I couldn’t meet Uemura-kun regularly in our agency, I really concern about his thoughts towards the characters. I really value his opinions much. As the first time to perform as a protagonist, I am really glad to see him endeavour in this project.
I once joked that ‘Just act as if you have to do or die!’. Yet Uemura-kun seemed to take it serious, and really tried his best to act. I can really feel his guts while he was Atsushi.
The coherence between Atsushi and Uemura-kun also pushes him forward. I can feel the passion in his vein during recording. This is indeed an treasurable experience for Uemura-kun.
It seems to me that Uemura-kun struggled in first two seasons, and somehow shown his dark side when he was confused (laugh). However, I think such conflicting thoughts also contributed to him as an voice actor. I think this is also a remarkable growth for Uemura-kun.
When we were preparing for Dead Apple, I was not able to record together with him, but after watching the movie, I feel relieved. I think Uemura-kun can also do very well even I wasn’t beside him.
During Season 3, we once managed to have a dinner together. When we talked about topics relating to acting, Uemura-kun became serious again! So the director just joked that Uemura-kun will behave weirdly during any dinner with me. (Inside joke from BSRadio)
When we were having dinner, I told Uemura-kun, ‘ You have found your own way to act, aren’t you?’, and then he just became serious again! I think it is really interesting to know how much Uemura-kun has grown.
-
Uemura-san, what is your thoughts on Miyano-san’s advice?
Yuto: Dead Apple has indeed granted me many opportunities to examine my technique. Although Atsushi has been fighting along side with Kyouka and Akutagawa, Atsushi rarely has a time to stay with Dazai, and just fight without his assistance. This is also the first time which Miyano-san wasn’t by my side during recording.
During the recording of the movie, director Igarashi-san told me to that Atsushi is the protagonist in the movie. During the battle scene, I really tried to act as if I were fighting in that circumstances.
I always try to immerse myself into Atsushi’s personality and situation when I was acting. These kinds of thinking particularly emerged when I was recording for ‘Portrait of a Father’ and ‘Addict’.
Season 3 seems to be slightly different from the previous stories, whereas telling the story of battles between Port Mafia and Guild. Season 3 seems to focus more on characters’ own development and description.
I think the acting skills required for this season has been levelled up. I am really glad to meet Miyano-san once again in the recording.
Mamo: Same, it is really nice to see you again!
Yuto: Miyano-san has been taking care for me since Season 1, and it has never changed. However, since the skills required in portraying Atsushi is more demanding, I can feel Miyano-san has a different approach in coaching me too.
Mamo: I always remind Uemura-kun to act in the way which he enjoy himself the most. I think it is good to have your own style. I once asked Uemura-kun, ‘Did you have a great time?’, and he told me he did Sauna recently, but it wasn’t what I means! (lol)
Yuto: Yeh I finally got what you mean afterwards... (laugh) But I really couldn’t stop talking about sauna! It seems that all our conversation is related to sauna recently...
Mamo: We shouldn’t be chatting about sauna okay?? (laugh)
Yuto: Yeh I think we messed it up... (laugh)
Mamo: Yet it seems we have a topic in common!
Yuto: I understand that it is really difficult to convey by words... but I really tried to fulfil Miyano-san’s advice, and acted with enjoyment. With the aid of the script and animation, I was managed to balance the characteristics of Atsushi in various aspects.
Although I received advice from Miyano-san, directors also gave me some instructions. I treasure their advice really much, and it is very important to consider ‘authenticity’ when you are acting.
Mamo: I think there is no absolute answers in terms of acting. That’s why it is difficult to explain it through words. However, our job is nothing without words at the same time, so I think we have to solely put our heart in it.
-
At last, what do you want to say to the fans?
Mamo: I am really grateful that our fans have been supporting us till this time. I love the conception of world structures in BSD. It is certainly my honour to be part of this story.
Various perspectives have been adopted in writing this story, and I feel myself definitely in love with Dazai. I really had a great time with all the other voice actors in this project.
It is a precious opportunity for me to work with my junior in the agency, so BSD absolutely holds a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for all the support!
Yuto: When I was informed to be the protagonist in this anime, I couldn’t believe how should I manage it. Bungo Stray Dogs is indeed inseparable in my life.
The director told me that he almost getting confused between me and Atsushi because we are so similar! I actually think I share some points in common with Atsushi as well. As time flies, I feel myself more connected to Atsushi.
I am really glad to be chosen as the voice actor of Atsushi. Thank you very very much for staying with us in such long journey!
Season 3 is a fusion with all the climaxes and emotions. This may be a battle about special ability, but also please pay attention to the character interactions!

Hikaru Midorikawa Reprises His Role as Silva in Shaman King Reboot Anime
One more returning cast is confirmed. The official website for the upcoming reboot TV anime based on Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King manga announced today that Hikaru Midorikawa (Heero Yuy in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing) will reprise his role as Silva, a Native American of the Patch Tribe and a member of the Shaman Fight Selection Committee. As with many other cast mmebers, he returns to the franchise for the first time in 20 years, since the first anime in 2001-2002.
Meanwhile, Silva's best friend Kalim is newly played by Eiji Hanawa (Ironman in Marvel Future Avengers). The character was previously voiced by Kazuhiro Nakata, who is now 62, and his last TV anime role was Karasawa-sensei in Shin Atashin’chi in 2016.
Comments from Hikaru Midorikawa:
"I'm very happy to be able to play Silva again. Now I'm rather stable in my low-pitched acting, but I guess it wasn't so good last time, was it? I think I was struggling to do the low-pitched play with a certain amount of effort. Now that I'm more comfortable with my performance, so I'm going to play Silva with more astringency. Please look forward to it♪"
Comments from Eiji Hanawa:
"I like you, Karim-san. And because I am a fan, I'd like to try to get rid of the one-sided image I have of him and approach him from a flat position. I will do my best so that not only the fans of this series but also those who will watch it for the first time will enjoy it. Thank you very much for your support."
