Structure - Research II
Tumblr media
Adrian Deweerdt, Luma Tower, Frank Gehry
The photographer has seemingly captured this image from a rooftop, this allows the buildings to be seen in the foreground. This creates contrast between the futuristic gleam of the stainless steel structure and the worn warm toned surrounding buildings. The setting sunlight reflecting on the steel panels makes them appear aqueous, there looks like there is movement to them. The circular nature of the glass area below The directional light helps to emphasize the different faces to the steel, which gives viewers a better idea of the actual shape of the structure.

La Fabrica by Ricardo Bofill
The crop in on this image really captures the obscurity of this structure, the home of architect Ricardo Bofill. The perspective from the corner of the building gives the building an unnatural cubic look. The high viewpoint allows us to see the greenery growing in the most obscure places which I think is one of the main characteristics of the surreal nature of the structure. The stairs visible at the side suggest the buildings original form as a cement factory.

Since this building is cubic, the photographer's choice of framing was a wise one. We can see two sides of the building which makes the structure particularly more interesting than it would have been from a more front facing perspective. This is not to say that the architecture is boring by any means, it is just more difficult to truly capture the *The light hitting off of the left hand side creates a nice contrast between the two sides. The shaded side brings out more depth, more texture is visible, whereas the light on the highlighted side makes the building look more lively and creates some nice faint shadows which only adds to the three dimensionality of the building. This building is endowed in squares, the whole building is cubic with square windows and square details plastered all over! The photographer has captured the details of the building well and piqued my interest, the tilt and central to the corner viewpoint makes the building seem dystopian.

The photographer has captured the primary feature of the cloisters. The ornate patterns embossed on the ceiling. The tilt more toward the right hand side allows the concaves in the ceiling and the shape of the stained glass windows lining the corridor on the right hand side to be more visible, brings out more detail in the stones on the floor. The contrast throughout the image has helped to showcase the three dimensionality of the pattern on the ceiling, preventing it from seeming flat.
