Gargoyle Squad: "The Witch"

Nahlin Alastiran is the last member of the top security squad in the group. They're the controlling witch for the group, working out the end of his contract for Y'qive. Their abilities and powers are kept close to the vest but they're scarily good at information gathering, knowing who is needed exactly where at the exact time and...they're an asshole. The gargoyles adopted them quite unwilling into their group, but they begrudging learned to tolerate and dare they say love the rock headed doofuses.

The best word to describe Nahlin is bratty. If they don't get their way, they are often seen pouting and/or plotting some type of revenge. Whether that's on a client, fellow group member or enemy. Y'qive is the only one exempt because she's the boss. Poor Poli often gets quite a few untimely pranks.

Their job within the squad is to gather and piece together the necessary intel for their missions and every one involved. If a client is hiding something that Zonas can't find through technology or Moonee hasn't heard through spying, then Nahlin will get through magical means. No one fucks with their team or gets past them. Nahlin is scarily good at their job and no one knows quite how they manage to do it. Given their past, Nahlin is not inclined to reveal any more secrets than necessary.

Y'qive bought them off the black market, gave them the option to work for her and Nahlin's been "working off their debt" ever since. Even though Y'qive would never make them pay back a cent.

They are dainty and cranky. At 5'6", it irks them to no end that Moonee is taller than them. Age undetermined, the paperwork simply said "old". Copper toned skin, black-brown hair often styled with small braids or tied in a ponytail, ruby eyes often hidden behind a pair of black glasses. They're shorter stature and slight waifish build often nets them more attention because of how big their personality and loud their mouth can be. They often bring Y'qive great amusement and others are convinced thats the only reason she keeps them around.

did david and wallis share a bed?

Yes, they did on a regular basis, if not every single night.

Throughout their marriage, David and Wallis typically had separate bedrooms at all of their residences which was the normal set up for royal or even just wealthy/aristocratic couples during the mid-20th century. There were also practical reasons they might've slept separately at least some times; Wallis had digestive issues, as well as anxiety, that often kept her up at night and David smoked which Wallis hated the smell of. But very often they would spend at least part of the night together, usually in Wallis's bed. There are a lot of sources on this that basically tell the same story:

-Aline, Countess of Romanones who stayed with the Windsors often recalled that she would frequently hear David in Wallis's room at night and that Wallis told her David would come to Wallis's room regularly at night and they'd stay up very late talking. (“The Dear Romance” article, PDF pg. 11/15)

-In the documentary Edward on Edward, C.Z. Guest said they slept in the same bed every night. She stayed in the same house as them on many occasions and knew others who had as well.

-Wallis's wrote a letter to David telling him not to sleep in his bedroom at The Mill because it was a 'fire trap' and wanting him to sleep in her room while there without her, which implies that when they were staying there together it probably wasn't the norm for him to actually sleep in that room or at least wouldn't be going forward. (Secret File of the Duke of Windsor by Michael Bloch pg. 288)

-Another interesting reference in their letters from around the same time is in a 1955 letter when David bemoans going back to his “lonely bed” in Wallis's absence. (Secret File pg. 286)

-I'm not going to cite specifics but there are also a ton of comments from letters exchanged by WE prior to they were married implying they regularly spent nights together before the abdication as well. David also made comments indicating a knowledge of Wallis's habits, health, and body that would imply they had lived together and shared a bed.

-People who traveled with them in the summer of 1936 on the Nahlin, including Diana Cooper, believed they were sharing a bed.

-Wallis's memoirs indicate they were sharing a bed in Nassau when David was awoken in the early hours of the morning and informed of Harry Oakes's murder. (The Heart Has Its Reasons pg. 346)

The fae leans forward to rest his arms on the table — one propping up his chin and the other holding a glass. He swirls around the what's left of his wine in his glass slowly and sighs.

“It's not like we don't have the security or manpower to deal with it--we do…. but I can only be in so many places at once, you know?” he continues, “And, for once, I'd really appreciate not having my eyes and attention in every single plant on the floor. It's a pain in the ass.”

“I remember a couple years back where there was like… something akin to an assassination attempt on the casino floor. Not to be cheesy but Poli will talk nonstop about his kids if allowed.

His kids being Y'qive, the gargoyles and squad and any one in their immediate "family" in the organization. Poli has seen them work so hard and all of them come out of their shells over the years. He's a proud grandpappy and he wants all his kids to be happy and live full lives, okay?

Y'qive maybe his baby girl but he knows that she's fiercely independent and capable. Cause he raised her that way but he'll never take credit. The gargoyles, particularly Zo and Moonee, he's watched them both grow from the precious block heads as new gargoyles. Voth has always been quiet and in his own head, but with the group and Y'qive, he's truly grown into a leader. Nahlin...is a whole other story.

But Poli will trap you and gush about his babies as much as you'll let him. So watch out!

do you think theres any particular reason why so many people who knew w.e thought that david was madly in love with wallis the whole time and that wallis was more fond of him than in love with him. I mean reading their letters its really obvious that she loved him and was in love with him. was it just a mixture of wallis not being as forward about how much she loved him (while people were around) as he was about her or just people trying to shit stir??

I wouldn’t say that a ton of people who knew them would’ve classified their relationship exactly in those terms; there was a range of views from people who knew them and it’s definitely all over the place. There were people who thought they were both equally in love and even people who thought the whole thing was an act on both sides. But I definitely would agree there was a recurring theme that some people thought he seemed to be more in love with Wallis or more consistently in love with Wallis than she was with him. And definitely among the more extreme end of people saying stuff like that was shit stirring. Literally anything and everything about Wallis was picked apart to try and make her look bad by some people, mostly of British aristocratic background, who had it out for her. I actually think for a lot of people how they interpret the WE relationship is less about what they actually saw and more about how they felt about the two people involved and about the abdication.

I think there is something to the idea that David came across, based purely on his mannerisms and vibes, as more visibly in love with Wallis than she appeared to be in love with him. Wallis didn't have the easiest time expressing her feelings sometimes. As Wallis herself said to Aunt Bessie in 1933: “Maybe you realize that I am enough like my mother to be completely inadequate at expressing my feelings when I feel the most.” Wallis was not as big on public displays of affection as David was. Her way of showing love was more in taking care of him, worrying about him, keeping him organized, and showing her affection physically and verbally more when it was just the two of them. Though it's worth noting there are examples of times Wallis was clingy and possessive with David and when she was physically affectionate with him in public (mainly on the Nahlin cruise) and she was criticized plenty on those occasions as well.

Their secretary, Jean Hardcastle-Taylor, who spent years with the couple and knew them pretty well said: “The Duchess was not demonstrative like her husband but it was always so obvious to me that when they were beyond the public’s gaze her devotion to him equalled his unswerving devotion to her.” 

I also think beyond not expressing her love the same way that David did, Wallis didn’t love him exactly the same way that he loved her, nor did she prioritize romantic love over everything else the same way that he did. It’s normal for the level of passion to ebb and flow at different points when a relationship lasts for a long time. Being so obsessively in love with someone that you basically can’t take your eyes off of them and hang on their every word 24/7 for thirty-eight years is very much not the norm, but that was how David was. This is not to say that Wallis necessarily loved David less, just that she didn't experience love for him (or for anyone else) in that particular way. I do think some of the people commenting on their relationship were just noting the fact that she didn't act exactly the same way with him as he acted with her. And honestly his obsessive clinginess towards Wallis and dependence on her was not always the healthiest thing for either one of them. Sometimes it fell on Wallis to set boundaries and carve out space for herself to ensure that their relationship worked well for both of them, and this is something that unfortunately has been used against her.
