The Booker T. Washington thesis of civil rights received its bluntest test in WWI. It failed:
The measure of the reality for Black soldiers in WWI is that General Pershing nearly missed active combat in the war in the belief that US officers should command US troops....except for the troops of USCT raised in the war. THESE he sent to the French Army, where they were fighting from 1917 onward and in the end ultimately fought harder and better than their counterparts in the AEF, whose conduct in the Meuse-Argonne was a fine exemplar of 1914 warfare.
Black soldiers put their lives on the line, and the effort in the end failed to move white Americans, who unleashed one of the most savage years of racial brutality ever conducted in the United States, the Red Summer of 1919.

one thing i think about in the fco au is if maybe vale would have warned marc not to race immediately after the first surgery which marc obviously does not take well and it leads to this huge fight where he’s accusing vale of not wanting him to race bc he doesn’t want marc to succeed anymore and break his records (or maybe he doesn’t go that far ? not sure where their relationship is at at that stage.. but something similar!) and vale calls him a danger to himself and others etc and marc rides anyway and well his arm swells etc etc and he’s so regretful so ashamed and is in so much damn pain + things are awkward with vale and it’s just a nightmare
oh oh and (not very related) but did they ever like set a time for when they would stage a breakup? or did they just deicde to take it one day at a time and overtime they were both too scared to mention it and then one day like some reporter asks marc if he’d ever considered retirement and just living out his days at the ranch and that gets marc thinking about like what he and vale would do once he actually retired bc then he wouldn’t have to be the only gay rider on the grid, he wouldn’t even be on the grid, and maybe there wouldn’t be need for all this theatre anymore and in the times he’s not thinking about the championship he’s only ever thinking about this, and is anxious to the point of straight up asking vale like. how will we break up. and the electrical circuits in vale’s brain start smoking and explodeee
jerez fight would go CRAZY like genuinely such a nadir in their relationship where marc after that REALLY regrets not listening to vale. like hes constantly living with it thinking like. if i had just listened to him i wouldnt be in pain everyday and having to rehab my arm and wasting years of the most competitive i will be in my short career. and VALE... lowkey also thinks that but feels more guilty about it. because hes hurt marc a LOT in this universe and hes not even the one in pain so what right does he have to even be resentful (<-incredibly traumatized man by way of motorcycle racing injury/fatality)... and i think that to overcome it they decide to set up an agreement between them where vale has more input in deciding if marc is healthy enough to ride. like he has to call and check in after a crash kinda deal. again like working as a unit. and of course he unionizes with alex in situations like uh. malaysia 2022 probable concussion highside. and then its a bit better
and the original plan for FCO au is a pretty contained story-- one year of fake dating (where they start fucking like MONSTER TRUCKS again about halfwayish through) and then hondayamaha pr gives them the okay to breakup at the end of the year and vale has like eight insane internal meltdowns about it while marc closes himself off like gangbusters cuz he thinks theyre going back to square one. and vale realizes he misses him and that’s enough leverage to get him out of the self destructive pits of horrendous guilt and GOOOOO to his twink

I do honestly believe that we are in the middle of the second dark ages.
I'd say it started in the 1970s or 80s but it has definitely accelerated throughout the 21st century. Right-wing extremism, religious nationalism, social regression, democratic backsliding driven by voter apathy driven by unchecked late stage capitalism; the winds are blowing in a very dangerous direction and I don't think we're anywhere near the hump. You could argue the decline started even earlier than that; the period between the 1870s and 1940s was the nadir of race relations in the United States, followed by a brief period of hard-fought civil rights progress, followed by the state stamping down hard on the counterculture ever since. Whenever it started, there's little doubt in my mind that we are currently living through another nadir, not just nationally but worldwide, and there doesn't seem to be any effective opposition; leftists get crushed before they can really organize and the moderate centrists in power consistently lose elections which fuels the growth of the far right. I can only imagine how much worse things will get in the coming decades. I hope my grandchildren will live long enough to see the next progressive era, maybe in the 22nd century, and their grandkids will inherit a better world than the one we're stuck in.

It’s been a difficult last little while. feeling distant from myself and tried to get back in touch to some things that help steady me. like info dumps. this was gathering dust in my drafts and I decided to tidy her up tonight why not.

What are your thoughts on Woodrow Wilson? It seems like depending on who you ask, he’s either the intellectual father of the current international system, or the man who brought American race relations to their post Civil War nadir by segregating the federal government.
As someone who primarily studies U.S domestic policy, I don't hugely care about Wilsonian foreign policy.
Yes, yes, international law and the roots of the U.N, but at the end of the day the League of Nations wouldn't have been fit for purpose even if Wilson had managed to get the U.S to participate, he got massively steamrolled at the Paris Peace Conference by Clemenceau and Lloyd George on everything from imperialism to anti-German revanchism, and you can't get away from the fact that his liberal pronouncements on national self-determination were sharply limited by his racism when it came to the self-determination of insufficiently white people.
When it comes to domestic policy, it gets harder for me because a lot of important and good stuff happened in his Administration - the income tax, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Trade Commission, the Clayton Anti-Trust Act ("labor's Magna Carta" according to Samuel Gompers), the Commission on Industrial Relations, the passage of the Suffrage Amendment for women, etc. - but most of that happened thanks to other people. Wilson was more of a cheerleader and promoter than a policy wonk, so I think any Progressive would have done as good a job.
On the issue of "American race relations," I think Wilson's impact was largely symbolic, but his impact was absolutely on behalf of segregation. The Jim Crow agenda of black disenfranchisement and discrimination had mostly been completed between 1890 and 1910 - by the southern wing of the Democratic Party that he came out of, I should add - and Wilson's personal contribution was to extend the latter principle into the Federal government as a final thumb in the eye to lingering Republican sentiment on civil rights. At the same time, between McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, the leadership of the Republican Party had basically already surrendered on black representation in Federal employment (just as at least the Executive had on anti-lynching laws, civil rights, and voting rights), so the damage had mostly been done.
His public support for Birth of a Nation - whether or not he actually said it, the tagline "like history writ with lighning" was a useful boost to the film's marketing - was probably more impactful in the long run. His Administration's inaction during the Red Summer of 1919 was most impacful of all, and even if you buy the bullshit argument that the Federal government didn't have the power to do anything in most cases, Wilson absolutely had the power when it came to Washington D.C and it somehow took him four days to send in the Army to stop white mobs from making war on the black community.

I've been considering why, after last week, I'm so calm about what is about to happen. We do not know what is about to happen, we only have inklings and echos.
I keep remembering that the U.S., and its Jim Crow laws, is the birthplace of fascism and apartheid. That the nadir of race relations saw white people actively destroy multiple thriving communities, including Tulsa's Black Wallstreet, Denver and Tacoma's Chinatowns, and the Osage Murders (and well, all of "westward expansion" is an active genocide). And people never stopped organizing against this active racial terror. Chicago can boast of Ida B Wells' magnificent writings. Seattle has Thomas Burke standing up to his own white community to protect his Chinese neighbors. The NAACP's establishment! Eight of the Divine Nine were founded (which means you had Black college students studying in universities and organizing themselves in before the Titanic was built)!
... and there is always John Brown, reaching into our antebellum history.
That the Haymarket riots (heyyy Chicago Mention... we visited the memorial on the day after) happened in response to the violent crackdown on labor organizers. Attacks on labor are a hallmark of fascism and the history of labor in this country is written in blood. But America gave the world May Day and we will not let them make us forget our history.
America might be the birthplace of fascism. Which means we* have been resisting fascism longer than anyone. We've been throwing bricks long before Stonewall.
* Black women and femmes have always been the heart and soul of this, and respect must be paid to those who have done the most work (and in the case of Stonewall, threw the first brick).

Rayford Whittingham Logan (January 7, 1897 – November 4, 1982) was an African-American historian and Pan-African activist. He was known for his study of post-Reconstruction America, a period he termed "the nadir of American race relations". In the late 1940s, he was the chief advisor to the NAACP on international affairs. He was a professor emeritus of history at Howard University. He was born and raised in DC. He won a scholarship to Williams College, graduating in 1917. During First WWI he joined the Army and served as a first lieutenant in the all-black 93rd Infantry Division, which undertook operations with French troops. Once the war ended, he remained in France. He helped to coordinate the 2nd Pan-African Congress in Paris. He returned to the US in the early 1920s and began teaching at Virginia Union University. During the US occupation of Haiti, he made a fact-finding mission to Haiti to investigate educational efforts and published his findings in The Journal of Negro History. The main findings indicated there was little improvement in education due to the choice of Southern white Marines as country administrators – men who had been raised with Jim Crow laws in the South and had brought their prejudice with them to their new assignment in Haiti, a majority-black republic. The main improvement effort resulted in establishing agricultural schools, which were highly expensive and staffed by non-French speakers, so classes had to be translated. The funding provided to these schools dwarfed the amount given to the majority of academic schools. He started graduate studies at Harvard University, earning an MA and a Ph.D. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him to his Black Cabinet. He drafted Roosevelt's executive order prohibiting the exclusion of African American from the military in WWII. He became Director of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. 1. All of the noughties feminism-by-media-criticism takes that decried The Little Mermaid as Bad Consent Messaging because she can’t talk are ableist; spoken communication is not the be-all and end-all of consent!
2. Nobody has actually topped Abed Nadir in terms of nuanced, enjoyable and relatable depictions of an autistic person (for whom their being autistic is not entirely fanon)
3. something about how actually it probably isn’t possible in today’s media climate to top it with an explicitly autistic Representation character because of something diseased about how we view Representation characters
4. A post about some guys I made up to get mad at who insist that in the purely hypothetical/not planned Centaurworld stage musical it is totally unacceptable to cast people who are not the same races as the original voice actors (at least, the original voice actors who are not white).
5. A post about the brief era between Boytown and Girlboss police in which female protagonists were allowed to be genuine fuckups

How am I supposed to know if I’m kin with Abed Nadir from Community or just a weird Aspie with that same kind of “trope filter” (that even led me to be afraid of taking in-person community college Spanish classes for fear I’d try to do what I headcanon Abed did (as remember he was the one who got Britta on Jeff’s radar, brought the rest of the group together and made the Breakfast Club comparison) and manipulate my way into the group of flawed-yet-lovable misfits i always wanted to bond with), one equally-geeky best friend and an intense longing for found-family (as seen above), very strict parents and a passion for making visual media albeit I’m more of a writer only compared to Abed being behind the camera too (and with this weird headcanon I have that Abed’s kind of demi-human, not exactly nonhuman even in ways that wouldn’t read as racist or ableist but more like (albeit with the nonhuman part coming from a far different kind of source) how Elsa’s human enough to still be related to her family yet still the fifth spirit of Ahtohallan, I’m not quite sure what being kin with him would even mean)?
How am I supposed to know if I’m kin with Michael from The Good Place or just a morally-ambiguous nerdy weirdo with similar longing to what I implied talking about Abed, a pervasive fear of being a bad person/being seen of as torturing or punishing others (especially since my parents just rewatched TGP my aforementioned trope filter is working overdrive afraid that if I punish them (what in their eyes counts as punishment) too much that means I’m inherently built to inflict nothing but harm for the same reason I still have this fear that being spoiled means I belong in the garbage because of Veruca Salt and CATCF, yeah I know he’s technically one of those bad guys but Michael was capable of change), a love of city-builder and 4X games, a metaphorically-compulsive need to blame myself for everything that goes wrong vaguely adjacent to me like he did esp at the end of S1E6, and the apparent ability to accidentally predict almost everything about how the system ended up being reformed (except for the door) when my Medieval Intellectual History class’s Divine Comedy unit tasked us with doing a paper about what our visions-if-we-could-design-them of a Good Place and Bad Place would be?
How am I supposed to know if I’m kin with Mirabel from Encanto or just have a very highly similar personality (if you believe PDB she’s ENFP 6w7 I’m INFP 6w5), the equivalent of similar appearances accounting for our different races as well as a very similar fashion sense, a family dynamic with a mom similarly-personalitied (via PDB as well) to Abuela who I seem to have an argument with at least every other week, a sister similarly-personalitied to Luisa who mad-relates to Surface Pressure and I often get severely jealous of and as for dad he may not match a Madrigal on PDB but he and mom both tend to respond to all of our arguments/my gaffes and meltdowns by wanting to “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” everything under the rug, a love of family/family history and high ability to connect with people (like how many fan theories have said if Mirabel has anything close to a gift it’s leadership/charisma), a natural aptitude for the Spanish language to the point where a Spanish teacher actually said I must have spoken it in a past life (and a sense of “vibing” with a lot of Hispanic culture so much it almost drove me to appropriative actions), a desire to do things I know I can’t to relieve burdens on my loved ones, and a fear of my own inferiority/incompetence?

I'm listening to the History on Fire podcast by Daniele Bolelli which is FANTASTIC for many reasons, but especially notable for me as an American is listening to American history as taught by a European who doesn't flinch from calling a spade a spade or Woodrow Wilson a white supremacist. It's startling and refreshing to not have that texas schoolboard whitewashed veneer applied to some of the Really Bad Shit done by Americans in our history.
Okay but like.... Woodrow Wilson was a white supremacist, we know this, right?
Princeton University has now taken his name off their school of international affairs, which frankly I was not expecting them to do, because when this issue first arose in 2015, they did the usual hemming and hawing about how he had contributed to the nation, etc. But as noted when this protest first arose, Woodrow Wilson was super racist you guys. Aside from admiringly screening the KKK propaganda film Birth of a Nation in the White House in 1915, he was actually quoted in it (as noted in the link above). He resegregated the US civil service and threw civil rights leader Marcus Trotter out of the White House because “[Trotter’s] tone offends me.” He had managed to win the black vote in 1912 with vague promises to make things better, and then.... did not do that. His administration was also heavily staffed with white supremacists.
Wilson admittedly did try to enact economic protections for working-class Americans against large corporations, and he has a luster as a progressive international statesman because of WWI, but while his racial legacy abroad (and particularly in the context of colonialism) is complex, it’s still... well, extremely racist. The period between 1877 (the end of Reconstruction) and 1923 (after the end of the Wilson presidency) has sometimes been called the nadir of American race relations, as all the gains from Reconstruction were rolled back, violent incidents including lynching became the norm (as well as the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 that we all just heard about thanks to the Orange One), and the Klan was politically empowered across America (not least by Wilson himself).
I think it’s important to note these things because Wilson would probably not come up on most people’s lists of racist or objectionable political figures, because a) as you note, Americans aren’t taught about this in the first place, and b) we like the idea that only the egregious George Wallace-esque types are or were actually racist, rather than examining it in the context of otherwise admired statesmen, as Wilson’s general legacy still is. I would also like to note that Abraham Lincoln, who is practically a figure of hero worship in American politics, remained far more concerned about the political Union than he ever was about black people, and used the Emancipation Proclamation to put pressure on the Confederacy, not because he was an anti-racist. He expressed opposition to slavery as an institution and by the time of his death was coming around to the idea of black citizenship, but he also said that “if I could save the Union without freeing one slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do that.” In other words, Lincoln’s attitudes on slavery and race also need closer study and awareness, and he is, after all, pretty much as uncontroversially saintlike as American presidents come.
The fact is that white Americans have been so coddled and pampered and shielded from reality that even discovering these very basic facts has come as a shock. You’d really think that in 2020 this wouldn’t be so goddamn controversial, but if nothing else, the sheer depths of this historical (mis)-education are now being brutally exposed, and everyone gets to see for themselves how a country full of “me-firsters” are now responsible for the dubious honor of the worst coronavirus response in the world/highest caseload. These two things really are connected. Ideology has almost completely replaced history, and while Trump has obviously accelerated and exposed that effort, America’s departure from reality has been going on for a long time. I’d like to say that will actually change now, but.... mmm.
Anyway, I’m glad that this podcast has been useful and enlightening to you. As you may know, I’m sitting over here as a historian watching all this happen with a mix of incredulity and despair about the way this country has simply not dealt with any of its shit because “we’re number one!” In general, Americans need to hear more about America from people outside it, because.... yeah. Yikes.

Theodore Roosevelt made one decision that was in the end one of his most controversial in inviting Booker T. Washington to dine as an equal:
And it's worth noting in terms of the cousins that this was a line that Franklin never came close to crossing, nor tried to cross. At the time it was a gesture of equality, and of radicalism, that marked a line few in the United States had dared, or intended to dare. This was a reflection of Roosevelt's overall approach to race and to integrating the Federal government, something that Woodrow Wilson would distinctly undo with a smile on his face and a song on his lips.

For Fuck’s Sake.
Let’s ignore the imbecility of trying to cancel a fictional character for a moment and pretend to treat this realistically.
As the video brings up and others have mentioned, Spidey’s ‘problematic insults’ are directed at people who frankly gave up any entitlement to respect the moment they selfishly began harming innocent lives.
Spidey doesn’t go around fat shaming any given person, but are we actually going to argue that we can’t insult the weight issues of a mass murderer?
That’s like saying that as bad as Harvey Weinstein was it’s still over the line to call him ugly.
Second of all insulting someone for being fat is not in any way shape or form on the same level as insulting someone due to their race, sexuality, etc. Not only is there no history of harsh discrimination based upon that (at least nowhere close to the same severity) but more importantly being fat isn’t something beyond the control of an individual. No one can help being black, being gay, etc...but technically you can help being fat.
Thirdly and most importantly, Spidey’s so called ‘fat shaming’ is merely part of his fighting style, a technique designed to distract and frustrate his enemies in order to make them slip up and thereby help himself to win. It’s a time worn tactic utilized even by the likes of Muhammad Ali himself. He isn’t saying it out of spite of maliciously, it’s purely ‘business’. Though not canon (exactly) a great example of this can be found in Spider-Girl #10 wherein Peter’s daughter time travels to the past and fights his teenage self. She is initially aghast at a casually sexist comment he makes to her before realizing he was simply distracting her.
This insanity reminds me of an encounter I had years ago on this blog, it’s always stuck with me as the absolute nadir of this line of thinking.
I posted an image of Spidey fighting a dragon just because it was cool. This sparked a chain of responses about how problematic it was for Spidey to mock the mentally ill.
What gets me is that of all people jumping on this band wagon we have Dan Slott.
Slott is clearly on the rotund side of life himself and infamously Otto is his pet character. In fact he straight up claimed he deeply relates to Doc Ock, which puts his comments into a messed up perspective.
More poignantly though if he allegedly felt this way, why did he never address the topic in the 10 years he worked on Spider-Man?
It’s almost like he was being hypocritical.
P.S. With the Bonesaw thing, putting aside the standards of 2002 and what teenagers were like back then (and frankly still are get over yourselves), Bone Saw was clearly a guy who’s image was defined by testosterone driven machismo so implying he was gay was ‘hitting him where it hurt’. Essentially Spidey will use whatever insult he thinks is likely to rile up his opponent and will try to tailor it to them specifically.

I'm trying to take a step back and view the current political climate through the eyes of a future historian. I'm trying to live my life like it's all going to be okay because in the future XYZ will have happened. If I went back to the 1920s or 1930s and saw the nadir of race relations, the rise of fascism, the great depression, the War, I could stand back and say "well, things will slowly get better throughout the century. There will be ups and downs, but life in the 50s will be better than this, life in the 80s will be better, life in the 2010s will be better." I'm trying to pretend like I'm not living through unprecedented events, like whatever is happening now was always going to be that way and it's all just a hiccup in the inevitable march of progress, which I know is a delusion but otherwise I'd be paralyzed with dysfunctional fear. I don't know what's going to happen 2025, or 2030, 2050, 2100. The future isn't guaranteed to turn out fine. In fact, it turns out really fuckin bad for a whole lot of people. "Things will be okay..." Tell that to Jews in the 40s. Tell that to the Iranians since the 50s, or the Afghans since the 70s. Tell that to gay people in the 80s. Tell that to black people pretty much anytime, anywhere. Tell that to the Armenians, the Kurds, the Palestinians, the Uyghurs. Being alive is terrifying. I can't even begin to imagine the horrors yet to unfold in my lifetime. My kids will enter a worse world than I did, I know that to be true.

Is Islam a Religion of Peace?
Islam was founded upon principles of peace and harmony to establish love, affection and collective responsibility towards the spiritual, physical, and mental wellbeing of all of society. ‘Islam’ a name given by God Almighty to this religion (Qur’an 5:4), is an Arabic word which literally means obedience and peace. ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root “SALEMA” meaning peace, purity, submission and obedience. So ‘Islam’ means the path of those who are obedient to Allah and who establish peace with Him and His creatures. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) defined a Muslim as one whose word or deed cause no harm to others. ‘Peace’ is the greeting of Muslims and ‘Peace’ shall also be the greeting of the dwellers of Paradise.
Hence, any person that does not adhere to these principles of peace, harmony and collective good, is outside the boundary of this definition.
Deeper Dive – Who speaks for Islam?
So, what about all of the negative media rhetoric against this peaceful image of Islam? Well, first and foremost we have to ask who has an authority to speak about what “Islam” is and what it stands for? Is it Media? Is it ISIS? Is it the president of a ‘Muslim’ country? Or the Muslim down the street from you?
None of these. The truth is that when we desire to know what any organization, company, country etc. stand for, we must look at its constitutional document. What any other person says or thinks is irrelevant, and if any person associates their actions towards this constitution, then cross-examination can easily manifest the truth from falsehood.
So, what is this constitution and basis of Islam? It is the following:
The Holy Qur’an (the perfect revealed word of God) Sunnah (practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa)) Passed down through practice, from the time of the Holy Prophet (sa) to present. After a few early decades, some practices were recorded in books. Ahadith (sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa)) Traditions and narrations passed from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) to his companions, and eventually future generations. These have varying levels of authenticity, for which early Muslim scholars developed an entire science of examination. The most important rule to remember is that a narration should not contradict the Holy Qur’an.
DOES THE QUR’AN TEACH PEACE?
The Holy Qur’an is categorical on its teachings about peace, after all, it is the key text of the religion that literally stands for peace. Let’s examine what it says about any and all sort of violence against an innocent person:
Whosoever killed a person – unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land – it shall be as if he had killed all mankind. (Al Maidah, Ch.5: v. 33)
Explaining this verse, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community states
‘A person who kills a person unfairly or who kills someone who had neither rebelled, nor became a source of violating peace amongst the people nor created disorder in the land, it is as if he has killed the whole of mankind. In other words, to kill a person without any cause is, according to God Almighty, like the murder of the entire human race. It is obvious from this verse, how big a sin it is to take the life of another person without reason.’ (Lecture Chashma-e-Ma’rifat pp 23-24: Commentary by the Promised Messiah Vol.2: p.405)
In fact, he goes even further to state emphatically the need for peace and kindness:
He who abandons kindness abandons religion. The Holy Qur’an teaches that whosoever kills a person without justifiable cause will be as if he has killed the whole world. In the same way, I say that if someone is not kind unto his brother, it is like he has been unkind to the whole world.’ (Al Hakam Vol. 9 No.15 dated 30 April 1905 p.2: Commentary by the Promised Messiah, Vol.2: p.405)
Freedom of Conscious and Religions
Let us look at another core and fundamental pillar established by the Holy Qur’an regarding religious freedom over 14 centuries ago:
لَاۤ اِکۡرَاہَ فِی الدِّیۡنِ There should be no compulsion in religion (2:257)
The Qur’an has given a clear-cut message of religious tolerance and freedom in this verse. Any person that suggests or acts otherwise steps completely against the command of Allah the Almighty and the practice of His Chosen Prophet (sa)
The Holy Qur’an protects freedom of conscious and religion in an extremely lucid and clear manner while stating:
‘It is the truth from your Lord; wherefore let him who will believe, and let him, who will disbelieve.’ (Ch.18:V.30)
Hence, there exists no injunction on any person to be forced or coerced into following Islam in any manner whatsoever. If force had ever been the desire of God Almighty would it have been difficult for Him to compel all of humanity to believe? Absolutely not. It is to this effect that God states in the Holy Qur’an:
‘And if thy Lord had enforced His Will, surely, all who are in the earth would have believed together. Wilt thou, then, force men to become believers?’ (Ch.10:V.100).
Highlighting this crucial verse, Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih V (aa), Supreme Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community, stated in an address:
“This verse clearly states that God, as the Possessor of all Powers, could easily force all people to adopt the same religion; however, He has instead given the people of the world the freedom to choose – to believe or to not believe.” (Address at Houses of Parliament in London, UK on Centenary of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in UK 11 June 2013)
This can clearly be seen in the practice and life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) and his companions. When the Banu Nadir were exiled from Madinah when they failed to fulfil their promise to maintain peace. At that time, they also had many children of the Ansar (Muslim inhabitants of Madinah). These children had begun to live amongst the Jews, because in the pre-Islamic days of ignorance, amongst the Arab tribes of Aus and Khazraj, those who had no male children used to pledge that if the next child were born a male, they would make him a Jew. Thus, there were many boys from the Aus and Khizraj tribes who had been handed over to Jewish families. When the Jews of Banu Nadir were exiled because of their transgression, the Muslims wanted to get back their own descendants from the Jews. The Holy Prophet of Islam (sa) refrained them from their action on the very basis that ‘there is no compulsion in religion’ that once you hand over your own son to someone else and that someone else makes your descendant a follower of Judaism, you cannot take him back: he would have to go with the Banu Nadir.
Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih V (aa) describes another incident relating to a slave of Hazrat Umer (ra):
“Then there is the account of a slave of Hadrat Umar (ra) who narrates that although he was a slave of Hadrat Umar (ra), Hadrat Umar(ra) never forced him to become a Muslim. Hadrat Umar (ra) most certainly used to explain to him with love and affection to become a Muslim but the slave would refuse and Hadrat Umar(ra) would only say: There is no compulsion in faith and fell silent after that. Finally, before his death, he set this slave free. Now who can, therefore, say that there is any room for compulsion or causing a breach of peace in Islam?” (A lecture at the Universite D’Abomey-Calavi Cotonou, Benin. 8 Apr. 2004)
Therefore, there should remain no confusion regarding this aspect of Islamic teaching. Islam is against any and all type of compulsion in religion, and lays the accountability of belief at the behest of God Himself. No other entity, organization, structure, or person has any right to do or say otherwise.
LIFE OF THE HOLY PROPHET MUHAMMAD – THE PARAGON OF PEACE
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) is the primary practical exemplar for all Muslims. His practices and sayings are held sacred, after the Holy Qur’an, perhaps there has never existed any other individual who has ever been emulated to this capacity. So, let’s see what his life tells us about whether Islam is a religion of peace or not.
First and foremost, we have the testimony of the Holy Qur’an regarding the preaching efforts of the Holy Prophet (sa) and his burning agony for the guidance of people while focusing entirely on peace:
‘I swear by his repeated cry “O my Lord!” that these are a people who will not believe. Therefore, turn aside from them, and say, “Peace;” and soon shall they know.’ (Ch.43 Vs 89-90)
This verse also states that in response to the Holy Prophet’s(sa) message of peace, his opponents did not only reject his teachings; they even ridiculed and insulted him. Indeed, they went even further and opposed him with enmity and created disorder and strife. Upon all of this the Holy Prophet(sa) pleaded to God that:
‘I desire to give them peace, but they do not give me peace. Leaving that aside they even strive to inflict pain and agony upon me.’
In response, Allah the Almighty consoled him by saying:
‘Ignore whatever they do and turn away from them. Your only task is to spread and establish peace in the world. You should respond to their hatred and transgressions by simply saying “peace be with you” and tell them that you have brought peace for them.’
The Charter of Medina – the First Constitution based on principles of Peace
Prophet Muhammad (sa) actively promoted peace, tolerance and compassion for all non Muslim minorities living in Arabia. He did not simply demand religious tolerance of his followers; his Sunnah was to provide legal and constitutional protections for religious minorities. This is perhaps best illustrated by two historic documents prepared by Prophet Muhammad (sa). The first document is the Charter of Media written in 622 A.D. – a formal agreement between Prophet Muhammad (sa) and all of the significant tribes and families of Medina, including Muslims, Jews and non-Muslim Arabs. Many scholars refer to this document as the first ever written constitution of a nation-state. The Charter of Medina pre-dated the English Magna Carta by almost six centuries.
The Charter consists of 47 clauses which set forth the formation of a sovereign nation state with a common citizenship for all communities. The Charter protects fundamental human rights for all citizens, including equality, cooperation, freedom of conscience and freedom of religion. Clause 25 specifically states that Jews and non-Muslim Arabs are entitled to practice their own faith without any restrictions. In short, the Charter of Medina was the first document in history to establish religious freedom as a fundamental constitutional right.
Then, secondly there is the Charter of Privileges that was granted to the Christian monks of Sinai. Western Islamic scholar, Marmaduke Pickthall, comments on this letter as follows:
“The Charter which Muhammad (sa) granted to the Christian monks of Sinai is a living document. If you read it, you will see that it breathes not only goodwill, but also actual love. He gave to the Jews of Medina, so long as they were faithful to him, precisely the same treatment as to any Muslims. He never was aggressive against any man or class of men . . . The story of his reception of Christian and Zoroastrian visitors is on record. There is not a trace of religious intolerance in any of this.”
What About All the Wars (Jihad) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa)?
So, if the prophet of Islam taught peace, then why did he engage in so many wars? This is often a very naïve question raised against the holy personage of prophet Muhammad (sa), while ignoring the facts of history completely. Let us look at the entire picture.
Makkans, the place of the Holy Prophet’s birth and early preaching, outright rejected the message of the Holy Prophet (sa) to a large extent. The few that followed the prophet of Islam, were heavily persecuted. They were dragged through the streets, starved, cursed, boycotted, and even ripped apart in front of their family members. What was their crime? Simply that they believed in one God, and followed Muhammad (sa).
When the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) had finally established a just and peaceful society in Medinah, the Makkans were furious and vowed to destroy the Muslims. They could not let them live in peace even in Medinah. Hence, God Almighty finally gave permission to the Muslims to fight back in self-defense in the following command:
اُذِنَ لِلَّذِیۡنَ یُقٰتَلُوۡنَ بِاَنَّہُمۡ ظُلِمُوۡا ؕ وَ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ عَلٰی نَصۡرِہِمۡ لَقَدِیۡرُ Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged — and Allah indeed has power to help them
الَّذِیۡنَ اُخۡرِجُوۡا مِنۡ دِیَارِہِمۡ بِغَیۡرِ حَقٍّ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ یَّقُوۡلُوۡا رَبُّنَا اللّٰہُ ؕ وَ لَوۡ لَا دَفۡعُ اللّٰہِ النَّاسَ بَعۡضَہُمۡ بِبَعۡضٍ لَّہُدِّمَتۡ صَوَامِعُ وَ بِیَعٌ وَّ صَلَوٰتٌ وَّ مَسٰجِدُ یُذۡکَرُ فِیۡہَا اسۡمُ اللّٰہِ کَثِیۡرًا ؕ وَ لَیَنۡصُرَنَّ اللّٰہُ مَنۡ یَّنۡصُرُہٗ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَقَوِیٌّ عَزِیۡزٌ “Those who have been driven out from their homes unjustly only because they said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ — And if Allah did not repel some men by means of others, there would surely have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft commemorated. And Allah will surely help one who helps Him. Allah is indeed Powerful, Mighty” (Ch22:V40-41)
Fair-minded commentators have utterly rejected the false barbaric image of early Islamic wars. De L O’Leary, for example, writes:
“History makes it clear, however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most absurd myths that historians have ever repeated.” (Islam at the Crossroads, p.8)
Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih V (aa) states regarding this issue while highlighting the need of the time:
The underlying point to consider is that the use of the sword or force is only permissible when a religious war is waged against Islam. In today’s world no one, be it a country or a religion, is physically waging war and attacking Islam on the basis of religion. Thus, it is not justifiable in any way for Muslims to attack any other party, in the name of religion, because this clearly violates the teachings of the Qur’an. )” (A lecture at the Universite D’Abomey-Calavi Cotonou, Benin. 8 Apr. 2004)
The fact is that the Islamic wars were in self-defense after the Muslims had been pushed beyond all bounds of reason.
After 10 difficult years of fighting to establish religious freedom and peace, the Holy Prophet (sa) returned triumphant and victorious to Makkah. What did he do at this time? Kill his enemies? Destroy their houses and property? No. He proclaimed:
“There shall be no punishment upon any of you for I have forgiven you all. I am a messenger of love and peace. I have the greatest knowledge of Allah’s attribute of being a ‘Source of Peace’ – He is the One Who gives peace. Thus, I forgive you of all of your past transgressions and I give you a guarantee of peace and security. You are free to remain in Makkah and to freely practice your religion. No one will be compelled or forced in any way.” (Bukhari)
The Holy Prophet readily granted amnesty to his persecutors, the magnanimity of which softened the hardest of hearts. Bitter enemies of the morning became warm friends by midday. Even the most die-hard enemies of Islam could not resist the healing balm so generously and so effectively applied by the Holy Prophet.
Commenting on this conquest of Makkah, the Rev. Bosworth Smith writes:
“Now would have been the moment to gratify his ambition, to satiate his lust, to glut his revenge. Read the account of the entry of Muhammad into Mecca side by side with that of Marins or Sulla into Rome. Compare all the attendant circumstances, the outrages that preceded, and the use made by each of his recovered power and we shall then be in a better position to appreciate the magnanimity and moderation of the Prophet of Arabia. There were no proscription lists, no plunder, no wanton revenge. From a helpless orphan to the ruler of a big country was a great transition, yet the Prophet retained the nobility of his character under all circumstances.” (Muhammad and Muhammadanism)
PEACE IN ALL ASPECTS
Therefore, Islam promised peace and delivered peace. The later fanatical politically fueled agendas of the extremist ‘Muslims’ that we see today have nothing to with Islam. Islam is a complete code of life, and promises to deliver peace in all aspects of life. From individual to family to social to international. No other religion delivers such a complete teaching without falling short on any matter.

Every political and racial effort to keep African American women disfranchised met with their active resistance until Black women achieved full citizenship.

He spoke cautiously and dreamed big, plotting his path to Washington and perhaps the White House. Yet Lincoln's caution couldn't preserve him from the vortex of violence Brown set in motion. Arrested and sentenced to death, Brown comported himself with such conviction and dignity on the way to the gallows that he was canonized in the North as a martyr to liberty. Southerners responded in anger and horror that a terrorist was made into a saint. Lincoln shrewdly threaded the needle of the fracturing country and won election as president, still preaching moderation. But the time for moderation had passed. Slaveholders lumped Lincoln with Brown as an enemy of the Southern way of life; seven Southern states left the Union. Lincoln resisted secession, and the Civil War followed. At first a war for the Union, it became the war against slavery Brown had attempted to start. Before it was over, slavery had been destroyed, but so had Lincoln's faith that democracy can resolve its moral crises peacefully"--.

But the people who built these sites remain imperfectly known. Though they covered standing monuments (stelae) and public buildings with hieroglyphic records of their deeds, no Rosetta Stone has yet turned up in Central America to help experts determine the exact meaning of these glyphs. Tatiana Proskouriakoff, a preeminent student of the Maya, made many breakthroughs in deciphering Maya writing, particularly in demonstrating that the glyphs record the deeds of actual human beings. This discovery opened the way for a history of the Maya, a monumental task that Proskouriakoff was engaged in before her death in 1985. Her work, Maya History, has been made ready for press by the able editorship of Rosemary Joyce. Maya History reconstructs the Classic Maya period (roughly A.D. 250-900) from the glyphic record on stelae at numerous sites, including Altar de Sacrificios, Copan, Dos Pilas, Naranjo, Piedras Negras, Quirigua, Tikal, and Yaxchilan. Proskouriakoff traces the spread of governmental institutions from the central Peten, especially from Tikal, to other city-states by conquest and intermarriage. And she also shows how the gradual introduction of foreign elements into Maya art mirrors the entry of outsiders who helped provoke the eventual collapse of the Classic Maya. Fourteen line drawings of monuments and over three hundred original drawings of glyphs amplify the text. Maya History has been long awaited by scholars in the field. It is sure to provoke lively debate and greater understanding of this important area in Mesoamerican studies.
