Taco Bell has brought back their double stack tacos in a trio of flavors that I had to try.
The nacho crunch version brought a lot of textural interest to the table, which helped make up for the standard nacho cheese and beef flavor being kinda boring. Probably a good option for kids or folks that don't like flavor.
The Chipotle cheddar edition was very flavorful and brought smokiness and that sharp cheddar tanginess that I like. It's a bit spicy and lingers long enough to leave a lasting good impression.
I really loved how much the garlic flavor stood out in the reaper ranch edition. The spiciness was pretty intense and really lingered, but the brightness in the sauce and the funk from the garlic balanced it out and made for a good experience.

Nacho Crunch Double Stacked Taco
The new double stacked tacos are just a hard taco wrapped in a soft taco tortilla, which I swear is already a menu item but I guess the gordita uses a different kind of tortilla so maybe not. Maybe it was the double decker? Anyway there's three flavors and I tried all of em but today we're going to talk about the best one, the nacho crunch flavor.
It's got nacho cheese between the hard and soft taco shells and those red tortilla strips that I think are supposed to be spicy inside the taco, which is otherwise just beans lettuce and cheese. It's actually really good, though at this point I'm realizing they've done a lot of variations on surrounding their menu items with cheese over the years. It's their best idea and it shows though. It's also neat they subsidized these down to a dollar, which makes them technically cheaper but more calorie dense than a regular taco even. It's a shame that probably means these are actually limited time items not long for this world. I would definitely eat the nacho crunch taco again even at 1.59 or so.
The best part of doing these reviews in this way is that hardly anyone actually clicks through to read the blog entries, this whole pathetic outpouring of navel gazey emotions and self pity. Instead everyone just kinda assumes "oh yeah, jake's got a blog about Taco Bell" and I get flanderized as the Taco Bell maniac.
Which is great, I love it, keep sending me Taco Bell bullshit. Whatever helps relate me to you in a sort of positive way. Definitely need that relation and remembrance right now as I'm a lonely fuckin wreck who feels like they're barely talked to or even worth talking to.
Anyway yeah comedy Taco Bell bullshit.

This is only the second time I’ve had Chicken & Waffles – both times a sandwich and both time disappointing. The other time was at a movie theater so maybe the issue is where I’m ordering not what I’m ordering.

Taco Bell, 1734 Colorado Blvd., Los Angeles (Eagle Rock), CA 90041
Sometimes I’m afraid to confess that I grew up loving Taco Bell, because I also love authentic Mexican food. I still crave Taco Bell – with just a few ingredients in different combinations, the food consistently hits the spot. I’ve always liked their sauces too. I take extra sauce packets and use them on other things at home.
The renovation of Taco Bell’s Eagle Rock location seemed to take YEARS…but one happy day, they finally reopened with a brand new look. The location has a drive-thru.
I checked my Taco Bell app and noticed I had a reward for a free Doritos Loco taco. But to redeem the reward, you have to place a mobile order with the app. I didn’t know this until I was at the drive-thru. (FYI, at Chick-Fil-A, you can redeem a reward on their app in-store or in the drive-thru, you aren’t forced to order via the mobile app). Anyway, I placed my mobile order and waited in the parking lot for the order to be ready. The app lets you request the type and quantity of sauce packets. And they just added rewards but I think the rewards are only for mobile orders?
I went inside the restaurant to pick up my order and drove away. A few minutes later, I realized that they never gave me my drink. Oh well. I didn’t go back. I still got the free taco. The tacos were stuffed pretty well (some locations skimp on the fillings). They threw in some extra sauce packets, so I was happy about that as well.
Doritos Locos tacos: The hard shell is brittle and salty, not a huge fan. It would be a different story if they still had Flamin’ Hot Doritos Locos shells. Those were better.
Nacho Crunch double stacked taco ($1.59): Available for a limited time, it was like the Doritos Locos taco only with a soft flour tortilla over a hard plain corn tortilla. The dual tortilla design eliminates the problem of the brittle hard shell. Sure they use salty seasoned ground beef, cheap iceberg lettuce and shredded cheddar cheese but it works because it’s freshly made and the sauces are good.
They have their own parking lot and very limited seating inside.
3 out of 5 stars.

Taco Bell Double Stacked Tacos - Worth A Dollar?
Taco Bell Double Stacked Tacos – Worth A Dollar?
Saw a video with a review of Taco Bell’s new Double Stacked Tacos, and figured it would be fun to give them a try – I mean, for a dollar, why not? They come in three varieties: Cool Habanero, Spicy Sweet and Nacho Crunch. Just from the names, you can pretty much see what they’re going for here – a two-layered taco, with each layer containing a different flavor, the result hopefully being that the…

Cool Habanero Double Stacked Taco Review
I was skeptical to try this, as I’ve spoken before about my distaste for their habanero sauce and this looks like yet another attempt to put their focus-tested attempt at a special sauce into an item, but actually the sour cream does effectively ward off the gross habanero aftertaste. Granted, the taco I tried had a bit too much sour cream to begin with.
I wanted to wrap up these three short review of what seems to be the last time this winter they’ll have special items I can actually get done beans no beef style (the incoming doubledown taco is definitely not going to be reviewed here) with a note on how fickle the presentation of these items can be. I’ve written about it for this blog before, but it’s kind of amazing how widely the quality and quantity can vary even in what is presumably hyper-standardized mass-market food. To wit: I ate several more of the nacho crunch varieties of these tacos and each time was successively worse than the last, largely due to preparation differences. There’s less cheese in it, or the cheese is improperly melted or some other issue.
Seasoned fast food vets should be well prepared for such variance, but it really gives lie to yet another capitalist institution: the myth of identical quality at every franchise.
For an example of something that manages to remain quality even with a high degree of variance, consider Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. A non-player character (who appears on the map but mostly stays away from the fighting) referees each battle in the game according to a shifting set of “laws” handed down before combat. These laws range from disallowing certain character classes to specific techniques to bans on using the “attack” command and could be influenced by crafting or collecting your own law cards. Both the player and the AI are subject to these laws, though the AI may have to be tricked into breaking them. When broken, the NPC will hold up a yellow card warning or a red card ejection from the battle, where you must either bail your teammate out or wait until they serve their time in jail.
This system single-handedly elevated what was otherwise a straightforward turn based tactics game into an entirely new realm of interesting choices. Now instead of merely executing plans of attack and overwhelming your opponent, you have to manage your team composition and alter your strategy based around these shifting laws. The laws themselves present a cost benefit analysis between breaking them and losing the character for the rest of the fight or using a more effective tactic to win the encounter. Juking your opponent into breaking the law without laying a hit on them is a completely valid and high skill form of play.
Sadly, the game’s sequel “A2” replaced the punitive law system with a more rewarding system of bonuses earned with specific actions. Tragic though it might be, this is the trend that games are moving toward, eliminating speedbumps and replacing sticks with carrots. Games are about /fun/ after all, and not so much about “interesting choices.” Maybe one day we’ll see a design similar to this but my hopes are not high.
