Inktober Day 11: Wander
Let me tell you I am SO GODDAMN HAPPY with how this turned out!!! It's not perfect nor does it get all the canon details right, but it's still worth every second of the three hours I put into it. The scene it depicts is from the Selenitic Age in the game Myst, and the young woman is meant to be my own self-insert version of the Stranger. Fundamentally Myst is about taking your time and exploring every inch of the game as you look for puzzles to solve, which makes it the definition of "wander" to a T, and I could not pass up this beautiful image that came to my mind.

This is the worst puzzle in the world.
Thanks for giving me five analog dials with no indicators of if I've set them correctly, no clear value for the dials to begin with, and then making me to transfer those vague sine wave values to another set of analog dials that I have no indication if they're set correctly.
Oh, and you've put the two sets of dials on opposite sides of the map so I have to fuck around with ladders and shit to attempt to transfer my vague guides from source to target.

Now I'm thinking about Myst ages again... Lowkey wanna live in Channelwood, I love swamps and trees and hydraulics and treehouses
Myst ages in descending order of how much I would like to live in them:
Channelwood (who wouldn't want to live there?)
Tomahna (look it's literally just an Age they made into a luxury home and I could get used to having to push buttons and shit to move the bridge around)
Direbo (Seems really nice. I might find myself wanting more shelter though.)
Myst (Seems fine. A bit small.)
Serenia (I know I said I don't trust Utopias but there really aren't many habitable worlds here actually)
Narayan (this is an ecological crisis waiting to happen)
Amateria (I do not love roller coasters enough to have fun here)
Riven (I do not love roller coasters and also the world is literally being torn apart)
Laki'Ahn (the D'ni really fucked this place up)
Edanna (I'd probably get eaten by some sort of creature)
Haven (same problem as Edanna)
Todelmer (cool as shit but it's really not habitable long-term)
Stoneship (yeah there's just rocks but it's pretty nice there, they made it comfy at least)
Mechanical (as with Stoneship, not very habitable but at least there's a comfortable house.)
Voltaic and Selenitic ages and Spire all tie here. They're just not livable.

Last Window: The Secret of Cape West - Alas! So few have even heard of this game! But I guess that makes sense, because...I think it never made it to the States? I don't remember the details, just that the only reason I was able to play it is that the DS isn't region-restricted. But anyway, this is the sequel to Hotel Dusk. Yeah, you can't tell from the title. But if you like Hotel Dusk, you'll probably like this one too. More Kyle Hyde solving mysteries, just in his own apartment building instead of a random hotel.
Myst - What a classic! The game I always loved because it's all about books! It's a game where you spend half your time reading books, and then you put your hand on the page and it literally transports you to another world! I can't thank my uncle enough for giving us his old copy of the game, which my brother and I attempted to play on our grandparents' ancient computer that didn't even have speakers. We couldn't understand half of the story and had no hope of solving any of the puzzles on the Selenitic Age (since the clues are all audio-based), but I still loved it. I could tell, at the time, that it was way too hard of a game for me to figure out, but after I waited a few years and discovered the existence of walkthroughs, I tried it again and fell head-over-heels in love with the franchise. Even now, it's really impressive what they were able to do with so little and so few people.
Life Is Strange - Ugh, I have such mixed feelings about this game DX The story really grabbed me - a high-school girl goes back to her childhood hometown for her senior year and reunites with her old best friend, but suddenly discovers she's developed the power to rewind time, as well as getting visions of a horrible storm that will destroy the whole town. I fell in love with the characters, who brought me to tears multiple times, and the choices you have to make can really be gut-wrenching - which is why I actually went back and got 100% completion, something I rarely do. I just wanted to see every outcome. I was also really impressed by what a good job they did with the one Christian character in the game. She was actually believable, and you even have to quote Bible verses to her in one conversation to get the best outcome for the scene. That's not something I've done in any other game besides Captain Bible! XD But unfortunately, there were a lot of frustrating things about the game - plot holes, choices the characters make that you don't have control over that made me want to smack them all, an overall stance about drugs and rebellion and teen sex as if those are positive or at least neutral things without any voices to the contrary that weren't just strawmen, and just...way more negative content than I prefer in the media I consume. So I'm really glad I played it, but also don't feel great about recommending it to anyone :/
Mirror's Edge - I love this game <3 Understandable that it almost won! I never would have thought a first-person parkour game would be viable, let alone fun and not nausea-inducing, but it really works! (Granted, I haven't tried playing it on my HD monitor, so I don't know how my motion sickness would handle that.) The story is kind of whatever to me, but the style and the gameplay more than make up for it. I'm not sure I can adequately explain what it is I love so much about this game, but it's just so satisfying to play. It's challenging, and you might fall down over and over again, but there's something about it that makes you want to keep trying, and that's the most important thing. Also...more than just about any other game I've played, Mirror's Edge captures the feeling of being in a city, and that just feels...comfortable. Even though I've never run across rooftops and leapt to a drainpipe, I have heard the ambient sounds of traffic and the way sounds echo off skyscrapers built close together, and I can almost smell the smells of the city. I know a lot of people probably wouldn't like that, but it makes me feel at home. What I'm trying to say is, the sound design and level design of this game is excellent.
LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy - Just like the first LEGO Star Wars game, this is just so fun and whimsical, poking fun at one of my favorite childhood movie series. I love the style of these games so much.
Osu! Tatakae! Oendan! - Basically, the Japanese Elite Beat Agents game. As previously mentioned, you can play games from any region on a DS, so I borrowed a friend's copy of this and played it during one Christmas break in college. I couldn't read any of the words, but the storylines are so simple it wasn't hard to understand what was going on. It was really interesting to see the differences in what kinds of stories are in this game compared to Elite Beat Agents (like the final level, where in this game you're dancing to save the world from being crushed by an asteroid, while in Elite Beat Agents you're fighting off an alien invasion), and it was fun to hear a lot of unfamiliar songs. The main draw for me, though, was that one of the songs was actually "Ready Steady Go" from FMA!
Little Nightmares - Oooh, this barely beat out Mirror's Edge! I'm happy to see this one win - it's my favorite horror game ^_^ Legitimately creepy, fun to play, the puzzles can be challenging but not insurmountable, and I love the overall aesthetic and art style. The inspiration from Spirited Away is palpable, and I am there for it. I also really like how there are no words in the game, so you just have to slowly pick up on what's happening as you guide this little girl through the bowels of a huge cruise ship where everyone wants to slice her up and eat her. Aaaah, now I really wanna play the second game! :(
Limbo - A striking little platformer that's all in silhouette, where you play as a boy running through a forest filled with danger (which leads to some very violent deaths). This is one of those games where I got a strong sense that there was some deep metaphor going on, but unfortunately I played it in a very rushed fashion during some school break and couldn't spare the time to really dig into it. I should probably play it again sometime - especially considering the meta message of Inside, which was made by the same people.
Arbitrarily-Chosen Video Game Tournament, Round 1.21
Welcome to the Arbitrarily-Chosen Video Game Tournament, where we will find out which of the games I've played is the best game of all time!
Why? Don't ask. Just vote and reblog!

Slowly working on my Myst collection. The prints are from gracemakesart and the bahro & totem (actually an incense burner that draws the smoke through the tusks, it's pretty cool) are from MystWorld. I have a journey cloth I'm (slowly) working on that's going to join the collection, hopefully soon. Not pictured: my yard of Black Ships fabric, and my Myst 'linking book' from the 25th anniversary Kickstarter. C:

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954) Nadia: The Secret Of Blue Water (1990) Riven (1997)
Myst and Riven both draw quite liberally from the combination of ostentatious victorian interiors and proto-steampunk mechanisms in 20,000 Leagues’s Nautilus (and arguably, Dr. Aronnax’s inveterate journaling), with none being more obvious than the analog to Captain Nemo’s organ found in the rocket that leads to Myst’s Selenitic age. However, Riven extends this even to other adaptations of Jules Verne’s work. To wit: Nadia’s protagonists crawl through a pipe and narrowly escape a shredding machine while infiltrating a power plant built into the center of an island caldera with a cult leader’s private estate perched on the rim. Sound familiar?
Nadia itself borrowed a few visuals from 20,000 Leagues, but the number of plot elements and visual similarities that Riven and Nadia have in common cannot be found in the novel or film adaptation. Though it is hard to pin down anything specific in Riven that is taken directly from Disney’s film beyond broad strokes visual inspiration, a few of the levers seen around the islands as well as Gehn’s survey room are clear nods to the controls of the Nautilus and the large viewport in the drawing room, respectively.

So fun fact I actually started making Rise aus to roleplay with friends, so all my shared characters (the turtles, April, etc) have different nicknames so that we could tell them apart in conversations and the like. I've given nicknames of a similar sort to my ocs in these aus too so that I can tell them apart from au to au, and I've listed all the important ones under the cut! I'm keeping the nickname system here too just so it's easier for me, but for most of them (with the exclusion of the future gang in FIH, the BoS turtles, the SFAR crew, and May from RftD) they call each other by their canon (and for ocs, original) names in universe :) I also added their pronouns just to keep it all in one place

hello everyone :) I'm Corvid/Icarus/Shark, pronouns they/them!! Tone tags appreciated!!! Artist and writer, working on fics :D I don't have one main fandom I have FOUR do you like plastic ninja and turtle ninja and Minecraft block men because boy I do (Ninjago, ROTTMNT (I don't really know any other version I'm sorry guys), Life Series, Hermitcraft) I also really like Dreamzzz but I've just started that series so I have less feelings about it /lh Do YOU like silly little aus about Ninjago and Rise because I have many if you're interested I have a list I'll put them under the read more with their name, tags, and a short description :) ITS LONG IM SORRY LMAO Also yes there is shipping in some of these, not really in any of the Rise aus but in the Ninjago aus there's some, most of the time it doesn't really affect most of the story but I'll mention if it does
RISE OF THE TMNT
Initium Novum (#inau) Told from the perspective of an OC (lost turtle sibling called Masaccio (Acie)), takes place during the show and has a lot of other OCs in it if that's not your jam
What Do You Do When You Fall Into Heaven? (#fihau) Told from multiple perspectives, takes place during/after the movie and is a hurt/comfort. The same cast as Initium Novum, with some additions :) I really wanted to write the future guys man they all show up at some point
Who's That Hamato? (#wthau) Kind of an au of Initium Novum, it's what if Acie was also taken in by Splinter. Explores a different facet of them, explores how their relationships would be different in a different situation.
We Have Got To Stop Meeting New People Like This (#snpau) Another Initium Novum/WDYDWYFIH au but this one's Ninjago :) Similar to House of the Rising Sun (Shells) in that the Merge caused their world to join the Merged Realms, they all explore this new world and Acie gets to go nuts.
Boys of Summer (#bosau) Non-OC au, it's another separated au throw the confetti throw the sparkles- Leo focused, he's still with Splinter but Draxum is there as well and has been redeemed, the others found their own ways out of the lab and ended up in different places.
Rise from the Dead (#rftdau) Non-OC au, puts a ghostly spin on the story. The turtles are all ghosts that only April can see. There's no yokai and no mystics, but multiple yokai characters are still in the story, just as humans.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Critters (#tmncau) Sort of Minecraft au but not really, I just really really love the fanon Minecraft hybrids so I made the turtles into them :). They're mutants still but they've got distinctly Minecraft hybrid traits I've put sooo much thought into the traits for all the different hybrids it's so fun
Shell From Another Realm (#sfarau) A Rise/Ninjago crossover au, takes place post-Rise movie and post-Crystalized pre-Dragon's Rising. The turtles, April, and Casey end up in the world of Ninjago and try to find their way home while also trying to figure out this new world.
House of the Rising Sun (Shells) (#hotrsau) Another Rise/Ninjago crossover au, completely separate from the previous one in that this takes place during Dragon's Rising instead. When the Merge caused all the Realms to collide, Earth was one of them, and everyone ended up scattered across the Merged Realms. The Hamatos decide to settle in the Crossroads and meet some young faces.
NINJAGO
Some Assembly Required (#sarau) Completely rewrites the entire thing, based on the question "what if the bite from the Devourer didn't turn Garmadon evil and instead made him sick?" Garmadon is good and raising his children, the kids aren't really as in tune with their elemental powers, and I made a bunch of lore for it around the dragons and the other elemental masters please ask me about it please please /lh (has a couple ocs but not very many) (pretty shippy, a lot of poly relationships)
Web of Destiny (#wodau) Spiderman au, all six main ninja are a group of heroes, with Pixal as a vigilante. Other characters from the series feature as villains. The Dragons Rising cast also features.
The Dragon's Samurai (#tdsau) Crystalized ending rewrite, Pixal focused. Asking "what if their golden powers went haywire after they sent them to Lloyd, causing them to lose themselves? Also what if Nya got a golden form I'm so sad she didn't get one" Basically they get taken over by their powers and Pixal has to go talk some sense into them I lOVE PIXAL SO MUCH DO YOU UNDERST
Abnormal Reaction (#arau) DO YOU GUYS LIKE THE BIZARROS BECAUSE I DO this is entirely me wanting to have a Bizarro au they don't die after getting dusted they just regroup somewhere else and decide to go do their own thing after Garmadon gets defeated
A Different Vision of the Future (#advotfau) I'm lowkey embarrassed about this one lmAO it's a Genshin au,,,,, I probably won't write a fic for it like I will with the others but I wanted to draw it and explore the concept I don't even play Genshin anymore I'm crying
Ready Your Triforce, It's About To Have More Sides (#rytau) Do you guys like Breath of the Wild :) I like Breath of the Wild :) BotW/Ninjago crossover au besties they all end up in different points in time and get to interact with different pEOPLE lots of me messing around with dynamics
staring up at the sky (and hoping to see your face) (#suatsau) Veeeeery self indulgent self discovery au. Everyone but Lloyd is this almost godlike ruler of different concepts and they give him the chance to leave everything to come join them, and he has to make that decision.
Ninjas & Normies (#nanau) They're all just normal college students who like to play D&D, they each get a chance to run a campaign once they're taught how to play. Each campaign is based off a plot point or season from the show.
Departed and Service (#dasau) BASED ON Five Nights at Freddys NOT ACTUALLY A FNAF AU I don't know NEARLY enough about the fnaf lore to make an actual au with it but they're all animatronic characters from a very popular kid's TV show and Morro and Pixal are employees at their party place :) A bunch of side characters show up in this (Dragon's Rising cast also appears)
SPINJITZOON! (#spinau) It's a Splatoon au they're all having fun Ronin is basically Grizz he messes with their weapons and makes them more powerful (Dragon's Rising cast appears)
Pokemon Spin and Pokemon Whip (#pspwau) Pokemon au!!! There's two different parts to this, the first one starring Kai Nya and Lloyd, and the second starring Arin Sora Wyldfyre and Euphrasia! They all go on their adventures and in the second part Kai Nya and Lloyd see themselves in these kids and want to help them go farther
Adventures of the Dragon (#aotdau) Another D&D au but this one is them just living in a D&D fantasy style world :) silly things ensue this one's more just art than fully written story
Shapes and Colors (#sacau) Minecraft au! They're a group of friends who play on a server together and some of them are streamers and youtubers who record these sessions and put it out there for their fans, some of them do lore while some of them have no idea what's going on any of the time. Other elemental masters and Dragons Rising characters appear. (shippy, but mostly with their little characters that they made for the lore)
Lights, Camera, Action! (#lcaau) Silly actor au! Not much else to it
Song of the Sirens (#sotsau) Mermaid au, some of them are pirates and others are mermaids. Just some fun dynamics with some human/nonhuman shipping :)
Mobs of a Feather Flock Together (#moafftau) Another,, another Minecraft au this one is like Adventures of the Dragon in that they live in this world and also they're all different Minecraft hybrids I got really really into Minecraft hybrids man I just really like to draw them,,,, Dragons Rising cast is included
Ninjagoing Going Gone (#gggau) Sort of Scooby Doo-esque mystery au, kind of a blend between movieverse and showverse. Starring Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, and Euphrasia, they're looking for the old heroes they used to hear about as kids who completely disappeared years ago. They find Lloyd and force him convince him to help them, even though he's not so sure he can.
