Tres Hombres is the third studio album by the American rock band ZZ Top. It was originally released by London Records in July 1973. * * * * * Frontman Billy Gibbons said of the album: “We could tell that we had something special. The record became quite the turning point for us. The success was handwriting on the wall, because from that point we became honorary citizens of Memphis.” * * * * * Andy Beta of Pitchfork awarded the album 9.0 out of 10, writing that, "ZZ Top's 1973 breakthrough was a masterful melding of complementary styles, cramming Southern rock and blues boogie through the band's own idiosyncratic filter." * * * * * * In 2000 it was voted number 501 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums. In 2003, the album was ranked number 498 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and in 2012 ranked at number 490 on a revised list. The album peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200. Just got this one in from #mysoundofvinyl! U2's 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire! . I had been looking for a clean copy of this release for quite some time, but I couldn't pass up this 180g wine colored vinyl edition. From Elvis in Memphis is the tenth studio album by American rock and roll singer Elvis Presley. It was released by RCA Records on June 17, 1969. 👑 * * * * * This is by FAR my favourite Elvis album. It’s got such amazing ballads and gripping songs. I can’t recommend it enough. * * * * It was recorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis in January and February 1969 under the direction of producer Chips Moman and backed by its house band, informally known as "The Memphis Boys". * * * * * Presley's entourage convinced him to leave the RCA studios and record this album at American Sound, a new Memphis studio at the peak of a hit-producing streak. The reason for going to Moman's studio was for the soul sound of the house band, 'the Memphis Boys'. The predominance of country songs among those recorded in these sessions gives them the feel of the "country soul" style. * * * * On July 12, 1969, Presley was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, with the album receiving the lead review. Peter Guralnick, the magazine's reviewer, described it as "great ... Flatly and unequivocally the equal of anything Presley has ever done" * * * * * From Elvis in Memphis has continued to receive praise in retrospective reviews. In 2009 Rolling Stone described it as "extraordinary" and attributed the sessions' success to Presley's "newfound maturity and soulfulness" and Moman's "warm, distinctly Southern musical backing". AllMusic gives it five stars out of five, and highlights it as an "AllMusic album pick". Critic Bruce Eder said that together with 1956's Elvis Presley, From Elvis in Memphis was Presley's "greatest album". Particularly the song “Treat” I just love the Latin piano sound. * * * * * Over half of the album's length is composed of instrumental music, recorded by what was originally a purely free-form jam band. * * * * The album was destined to be a major release, given a boost by the band's performance at the Woodstock Festival earlier that August. ✌🏻 * * * * The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 pop album chart and #26 on the UK Albums Chart. It has been mixed and released in both stereo and quadraphonic. The album cover was made by Lee Conklin. * * * * A retrospective Rolling Stone review was more enthusiastic, finding Santana "thrilling ... with ambition, soul and absolute conviction - every moment played straight from the heart". In 2003, the magazine ranked Santana number 150 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, moving up to 149 in a 2012 revised list.
