Touhou AU where rather than Byakuren developing her entire self-identity around being a “Not by birth is one a Brâmana, nor is one by birth no Brâmana; by work (kammanâ) one is a Brâmana, by work one is no Brâmana” Buddhist, she became a “Kill living beings, speak lying words, take what is not given, consort with the women of others” Buddhist.
And not in the metaphorical way.

Not gonna lie, one behavior I find really weird is like. Being mean to Byakuren Hijiri.
Like she is genuinely just. The fucking sweetest. Just so kind!
Like just reading up on her and it's just. So amazing how she herself just absolutely embodies love and compassion. Her, the Youkai she helps, the many, many people who find comfort in both her and Myouren Temple, and use it as a place of worship...
Really makes one realize how Gensokyo is a fantasy land.

Touhou Character Ages, an imperfect and incomplete and provisional guide:
Part 1: Over a thousand years old.
Eirin Yagokoro: predates the formation of Japan (Omoikane is the child of the primordial creation god Takamimusubi in the Kojiki), so depending on how you date this, she could be over 130 million years old (beginning of the subduction of the Izanagi Plate) or as young as 2 million years old (date Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku separated from the mainland). Neo-Traditionalism of Japan says 25 million years for the Izanagi Object mentioned.
Hisami Yomotsu: A yomotsu-shikome with a grape motif, she presumably is one of those who chased Izanagi and would be of a similar age, 25 million years or so.
Keiki Haniyasushin: Haniyasu is another god from Izanagi Times.
Junko: Her euhemerized backstory with Hou Yi places her as dating back to the Xia, traditionally dated as ruling 4000-3800 years ago.
Chang'e: Must be at least as old as Junko.
Yukari Yakumo: Of uncertain age, definitely 1200+(Merry's age at time of disappearance) thanks to Akyuu, implied to be the oldest youkai in Gensokyo and thus would have to be older than Tewi, so a minimum of about 3000 years old.
Hecatia Lapislazuli: attested to by Hesiod in the Theogony, is already an established mythological figure, at least 2700 years old and probably significantly older.
Suwako Moriya: Older than Kanako by their backstory, and a Jōmon goddess. At least 2300 years old if we use the current dating for the end of the Jōmon period, 2700 if we use the traditional date for the arrival of Jimmu, probably much older.
Tewi Inaba: If she's literally the Rabbit of Inaba, then she's as old as Ōkuninushi and thus older than Kanako.
Sagume Kishin: A Kojiki figure from the same period of heavenly gods conquering Japan. In the same age bracket as Tewi and Kanako at minimum, quite possibly older.
Kanako Yasaka: Dates back to the conquest of Japan by the heavenly gods. At least 2700 years old with a slightly euhemerized interpretation, possibly older.
Seiga Kaku: Might be as old as the Eastern Han (so 2000-1800 years old), given esoteric Taoism being popular then, but more likely is visually intended to be from the Tang, another period for esoteric Taoism. She must be old enough to be an established corrupt immortal when she met Miko, though. So at least 1400, probably at least 1500 years old.
Okina Matara: From her comments on Eternity Larva, she was Hata no Kawakatsu and so appeared sometime in between the years 509 and 571, though quite possibly had some kind of preexistence as Matarajin. Definitely older than Miko.
Eternity Larva: The tokoyo god's cult was defeated and exposed by Hata no Kawakatsu.
Toyosatomimi no Miko: Has a defined birthday (February 7th, 574) from being a historical figure and so turned 1,449 this year.
Mononobe no Futo: Contemporary of Miko.
Soga no Tojiko: Contemporary of Miko.
Hata no Kokoro: Made by Miko for Okina.
Saki Kurokoma: Was Miko's horse before she was sent to the Asuka period glue factory and became an animal realm gangster.
Watatsuki no Toyohime: Eirin's pupil before she left in exile, older of the two sisters, almost certainly much older than this.
Watatsuki no Yorihime: Younger than Toyohime by definition but the rest applies as well.
Kaguya Houraisan: Definitely existed for some time before being exiled to Earth when Fujiwara no Fuhito was alive. At least 1400 years old, almost certainly much older.
Fujiwara no Mokou: Presumably a child of Fujiwara no Fuhito and thus about 1340-50 years old.
Minamitsu Murasa: Had been a phantom for enough time to become a local legend before Byakuren arrived. At least 1100 years old.
Byakuren Hijiri: Sister of Myouren, who lived in the 9th century. At least 1100 years old.
Shou Toramaru: Follower of Byakuren, must be of roughly similar age.
Ichirin Kumoi: Follower of Byakuren, must be of roughly similar age.
Nazrin: Attendant of Vaisravana/Bishamonten, is at least of similar age to Shou and possibly older.
Nue Houjuu: At least 900 years old going by her being the nue Minamoto no Yorimasa shot at, but knew Murasa and so is at least old enough to have interacted with her before Byakuren's followers got jailed.
Suika Ibuki: Fought the ara ara lady with balloon tits from Fate franchise media, which makes her at least 1000 years old. At least a little older, most likely.
Kasen Ibaraki: Contemporary of Suika.
Yuugi Hoshiguma: Contemporary of Suika.
Aya Shameimaru: Over a thousand years old according to PoFV.
I can't help but feel I'm missing some.

Byakuren Hijiri
How I feel about this character: I like her reasonably well. I feel like she sort of lacks the, out of lack of a better word, showmanship that makes Kanako and Miko such a huge presence in the series, but that's not really a problem. She opened the door for more Buddhism in Touhou, and that has pretty much consistently been one of my favorite aspects of the series, so it would be hard for me to dislike her. There's also something almost transgressive about making a minor female character from the Myouren scroll THE representative of Buddhism in the series given the prevailing attitudes towards women in medieval Japanese Buddhism - I have no clue if ZUN did this on purpose but it's a very interesting approach.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: I like both Byakuren/Shou and Byakuren/Miko though in both cases this is not my fave pairing when it comes to the other party.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I think one of Byakuren's biggest strength is that she has a large group of characters she is closely associated with, she really feels like a "community leader" so to speak, so I guess I would say her disciples in general.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I am afraid I have fairly conventional views on Byakuren. Would saying that I do not really like her outfits much count? The gradient hair is great but especially by main boss standards her clothes never felt all that memorable to me.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: the symposium was the absolute peak ofher character, so more of that. We now have enough high profile Buddhist characters for an internal debate, even.

GO WEST | Artist: Hinayuki Usa
Story 1 Byakuren Hijiri is the head nun at Myouren Temple. She used to be a human, but she surpassed her humanity after many years of training. Now, she is a magician. She is also beloved by youkai for some reason even though she follows the path of Buddha.
Story 2 Byakuren had been sealed by humans before coming to Gensokyo. Humans had been afraid of her because she had abilities that other people did not have. In the end, she was unsealed by the youkai who loved her.
Story 3 In a previous incident, Byakuren wore a jet-black riding suit and rode around on her motorcycle. She was absolutely delighted when she got to ride on her motorcycle again for the Great Airsoft Festival.
Story 4 With Reisen and Medicine on her side, Byakuren aimed for the flag of Team Kappa and rode forth on her motorcycle for recon. Bullets from play guns were nothing to her―she skillfully maneuvered her motorcycle through the barrage of bullets that flew at her.
Story 5 Byakuren rode swiftly through the battlefield of Gensokyo to bring Team Moon Rabbit to victory, like the headless rider of legend…

Toyosatomimi no Miko:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoutoku Taishi (Taishi was his title, a gender-neutral title meaning apparent heir to the throne) was a famous Japanese politician of the Asuka period, well-known for being one of the first to spread Buddhism throughout Japan. He's famous enough that certain Japanese bills have his picture on them, and some areas actually worship him as a god. He's also the subject of countless fables depicting him performing all kinds of miracles.
However, according to Touhou, things were much different.
Shoutoku Taishi was not born in a stable, she denies she could possibly have such a commoner's birth. Her real name was in fact Toyosatomimi no Miko. She in reality only spread Buddhism in order to pacify the masses. She practiced Taoism in secret in order to gain immortality, which was something she had sought her entire life. She asked "the ocean has stood since time immemorial, and the mountains do not age and wither, so why must humans accept death?" Unfortunately, she began to grow old and weak regardless, and began to lose hope. However, Seiga Kaku came to her one day and told her of the abilities of Taoism, and how if you trained hard enough and became one with nature, immortality would be in your grasp. Thus, Miko became a hermit, and using these newfound superpowers, she accomplished all the miracles the old stories tell about her.
She didn't make much progress initially on immortality, however. She actually poisoned herself with cinnabar in a misguided attempt at an immortality elixir, and it seemed like she'd die before reaching that point in her meditation. However, she discovered a way to deliberately kill her body and resurrect in a new one, spirit completely intact. She tested it out on her two most loyal followers, with complete success on one (and the other one only failed because of deliberate sabotage).
She had planned on resurrecting soon after, once Japan felt it needed her to return, but some Buddhist priests found out about her lies and schemes, and sealed her mausoleum away for centuries. Eventually, people in real life began to doubt that Shoutoku was even a real person, or at the very least the stories surrounding him were exaggerated. Thus, she and her cohorts entered Gensokyo.
The Myouren Temple had also known about this scheme, and deliberately built their building right on top of the Divine Spirit Mausoleum in order to further hinder her. However, this actually turned out to be just the right push to complete her resurrection. Spirits of desire came, attracted to her power and miracles, thus triggering the events of Ten Desires. She had no real scheme beyond resurrection, but the protagonists fought her anyways. After being defeated, she opened up the Divine Spirit Mausoleum to anyone interested in the Dao, and became yet another major religious figure in Gensokyo. Man, the Moriya Shrine really dropped the ball when they gave Utsuho her powers.
Afterwards, she's made many reappearances, beginning as one of the main speakers of the book Symposium of Post-Mysticism, alongside her fellow religious leaders Kanako Yasaka and Byakuren Hijiri. Then, she appeared as a playable character and opponent in Touhou 13.5: Hopeless Masquerade, and its sequels, 14.5: Urban Legend in Limbo and 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers.
Oh, and she didn't have her cape when she appeared in Ten Desires. She only got it from Hopeless Masquerade onwards. An objective improvement.
Befitting a politician, she speaks in a polite and professional manner, though she also can be loud and hammy when she needs to rile people up to her cause. She's willing to use underhanded means to get ahead in Gensokyo, and admittedly just sees Taoism as a tool for immortality, viewing her disciples as servants more than anything. She's incredibly self-righteous, that is, she sees those who oppose her as absolutely being in the wrong. She's also incredibly dedicated to wiping out those who she considers evil. Still, she's no fascist warlord, and legitimately believes her guiding hand would make the world a better place. If nothing else, she's definitely popular in Gensokyo, with the only people who hate her being extreme countercultural types.
She initially wanted to rule over the Human Village, but stopped when she was told that typically any time a leader figure of sorts arises in the village, they usually... are found dead under mysterious circumstances.
While she once had a strong arch-enemy relationship with Byakuren and the Myouren Temple, over the years they've come to respect each other's good qualities and have been seen as friends more often than not.
This seems to be a trend in this series, huh? Arch enemies turn to best friends on a regular basis, and this is far from the last time this will happen.
Miko is incredibly talented. She has a limited form of mind-reading: she can read people's innermost desires. This allows her to understand the point of any conversation, and she can sometimes know people more than they know themselves! On the other hand, if someone lacks innate desires they should hypothetically have, Miko will misunderstand them. For example, she was quite confused upon seeing Youmu Konpaku, who, as a half-ghost, had lost her fear of death. She also hears people TOO well, to the point it hurts her ears and she needs those protective earmuffs. She also lives in her own pocket dimension called Senkai, which she can use to access Gensokyo from any nook and cranny in a floor.
Man, a skilled warrior, writer, sorcerer, public speaker, what can't she do? Well, she's not as good with art. Or maybe she's the best at art.
Her danmaku primarily utilizes bright, shining light, especially golden light. She has a sword, the Seven Star Sword, but apparently it's so sharp even the shine of it can cut people, so she only draws a little bit of it and lets the beams of light do the rest. If she wants to hit people with something, she'll do it with her shaku, the wooden paddle she holds. She can also shoot golden swords out of portals she creates, and somehow has a flamethrower in her cape. Many of her spellcards are based on historical achievements of Shoutoku (not miracles, more serious political stuff). For example, she has a spellcard where bullets spawn from the bottom to the top of the screen, and are colored according to the 12-color hierarchical system she put in place when she was regent: dark grey, black, light grey, white, light yellow, yellow, red, dark red, blue, dark blue, light purple, and finally dark purple at the top. She also has one based on Shoutoku's 17-article constitution, called "Honor the Avoidance of Defiance".
Oh, and she has a spellcard where she summons both Futo and Tojiko to her aid, with them just shooting waves of turquoise arrows while taunting you. Until they get exhausted and start complaining instead.
Her spellcards are incredibly popular in-universe, to the point where a contest among almost all the cast over whose spellcards were the most beautiful was held, with her winning first place! She even kept submitting even after everyone agreed she was the best because that was how dedicated she was.
Now, remember, Miko is the same person as Shoutoku Taishi. And it seems she very much was a man back then. When resurrecting as she did, there's a degree of freedom as to how your new body is going to look. Futo looks more or less the same as she once did, but Miko sought to change her body to "adapt to the times".
So, yes, she is incredibly popular among transgender Touhou fans. That said, Shoutoku Taishi was always a title, it means something like "Prince Virtue". She does not appear to take any offense to being called it and does not view it as any sort of deadname.
Miko is also one of the only Touhou characters to have a known birthday: February 7th, 574 CE. She's around 1450 as of 2023

Touhou Ship Week 2023 Day 3: Creativity
Another boring day at the temple, Shou Toramaru thought to herself. She had just finished reading that book from the Outside World that Mamizou had gifted her and was largely out of things to do. So what was a youkai to do other than to loiter around the Myouren Temple grounds and perhaps look to see if anyone was being a worse Buddhist than she was. Because if there was one thing she was good at, it was reprimanding people.
“Hmm. Don’t see anything…”
The grounds were remarkably quiet this early in the morning. Kyouko Kasodani was off cleaning her section of the yard as usual; Shou couldn’t help but admire her work ethic, as much as Byakuren seemed dedicated to eliminating whatever leisure time she had. Besides her, she only saw a handful of monks and monks-to-be training outside, nothing too surprising given that the sun had barely risen. Yup, seemed today was going to be a perfectly quiet, ordinary day.
And then she heard a squeak.
“Huh?”
Shou turned and looked around for the source of the squeak, but to no avail. It wasn’t to her left, it wasn’t to her right, and if it were at her feet she were sure she could feel it. Which probably meant she was going to have to go on a little journey to figure this out.
Shou began to wander the grounds, specifically looking for where the squeaking would be loudest. Wandering out to the gate, she caught absolutely nothing, and so she wandered back around to the building: There we go, there’s the squeaking again. That confirms that whatever she heard was coming from inside. Taking this knowledge and running with it, Shou walked into a side door, where she would begin walking through the halls in an attempt to locate the source.
Eventually she would come across a door to her right. Oh, the squeaking was real loud coming from there, the chances of her turning, entering, and seeing some giant mass of rats were very suddenly not zero. Only one way to find out though, so Shou soon turned and poked her head into the room next to her.
“Hello?”
Ah, so there was the reason the squeaking was so loud. It wasn’t a mere mouse or rat, but a group of several. They were all scurrying around the room, a few either carrying dust clothes or sliding around on them. And who else would be among them but the giant rat… err, mouse… that makes all of the rules? Nazrin, a youkai like Shou, was currently using her dowsing rods for a variety of purposes: The one in her right hand had a dust cloth attached and was cleaning a high shelf that even the massive Shou had a bit of trouble reaching, while the one in her left hand had some cheese on the end and was leading some mice along a lower shelf.
“Nazrin?”
The sound of Shou’s voice visibly caught the mouse youkai’s attention. Nazrin swiveled around to face her tiger partner and looked up for eye contact; truth be told, the height gap between them was pretty much entirely a result of Shou herself being incredibly tall, maybe around two meters tall.
“Yeah, love?”
“What are you doing?”
“Oh, I’m just cleaning. I know you get annoyed when I don’t pitch in to help take care of the shrine whenever I stay over, so I thought I’d have a little fun with it.”
“Oh, you’re being charitable?” Shou cracked the smallest of smiles at that. “Thanks Nazrin, I appreciate it. Mind explaining how you’re doing it then? This all seems pretty complicated, and lady Hijiri’s already gotten on my case about drinking too much.”
“It’s quite simple, dear Shou!” Nazrin walked forward and held her hands out to her sides, briefly twirling. “As you can see, these kind mice are manipulating their dust cloths, quite handily in fact. Because there’s so many clothes and so many mice, even if they retread ground they’re not about to drag any dirt around because they can just pick it back up! And for those who lack motivation… behold!”
Nazrin held up the cheese-ended dowsing rod, waving it in front of Shou’s face. The tiger could very clearly tell she was just doing it for dramatics, but hey, who didn’t like a little dramatics once in a while?
“Food rewards! You and I both know that mice aren’t particularly motivated by the possibility of being reborn in a better standing in the next life, they just wanna live a long life now, so I’m motivating them with food. Not even just this cheese either, I have a whole stash lined up.”
“A stash, huh? That’s quite interesting.” Shou fidgeted with her sleeves as she though of what to say next. “So, uh… would you mind telling me where you got that food?”
“Oh, wouldn’t you like to know? I, uh… I have my methods. Which I’m not sharing, so there.”
“...I see.” Shou could take a wild guess as to what Nazrin meant by that; as much as she liked her, she knew Nazrin wasn’t exactly a morally upstanding character. “And, uh, besides that high shelf, have you done any of the cleaning yourself?”
“Mm? Myself? Why would I need to worry about that? They’ve got a hang of it, don’t you think? And it’s not like I’m not doing anything Shou, I’m still leading them. There’s nothing you need to worry about love, I’ve got this all under control-”
Nazrin’s sentence was very suddenly interrupted by a crash. The noise causes the mouse to leap back and toward Shou, practically leaning against her to seek some sort of comfort. Sighing, Shou patted her partner on the head and looked to see what broke; as it turned out, it was a single ceramic bowl that had broken into a few pieces. Nothing too unmanageable. All of the rats had already scattered to the other end of the room.
“...so, great Napoleon,” Shou remarked, “how did relying on the mice to do everything work out for you?”
“Eurgh, it was fine until that happened. And who’s Napoleon?”
“Someone in the book Mamizou gave me.” Shou casually avoided mentioning that Napoleon was a military leader whose hubris was his ultimate downfall; truthfully, the height had nothing to do with it, as even the book mentioned that Napoleon wasn’t particularly short.
“Sure, sure. Uh… I’ll… I’ll clean that up-”
“No, no, I’ll get it.”
Shou walked over to the mess and knelt down to pick up the large shards of the bowl. With a groan she stood back up and disposed of the remains of the bowl into a waste bin, then turned back to Nazrin, who was already in the middle of trying to feed the visibly shaken rodents. Sheesh, Shou thought, maybe her little jab was a bit insensitive. With that thought in mind, she walked over to Nazrin and stood next to her.
“Hey, points for creativity,” Shou told the mouse. “It wasn’t practical, but I can only imagine how much effort it took to orchestrate all of that.”
“A fair bit, actually,” Nazrin admitted with a groan as she finished distributing the food, then snatched Shou’s arm. “It’s a lot harder to motivate mice when the food reward isn’t immediate. But, uh, what do you think of the finished results?”
“Hmm? What do I think?” Shou took one quick look around the room. Actually, there was hardly any dust at all, if there even was any. Maybe she shouldn’t have been so quick to judge the mice for the one mix up. “Looks good. Give the mice my regards, but first, let me give you mine.”
Shou leaned down and gave Nazrin a kiss on the cheek; the intimacy was enough to turn Nazrin’s face as red as could be, almost as red as her eyes if you wanted to exaggerate. Shou couldn’t help but admit to herself that seeing her flustered was fun, both because it helped to deflate her ego and also because she just found it cute.
“So how about some breakfast? I hear Ichirin’s cooking.”
“F-fine, fine. Probably beats what I had before getting here.”
With that, Shou helped Nazrin out of the room and off to the temple kitchen, while the other mice dashed out of the room to parts unknown. It was kind of a miracle that Nazrin was able to figure out how to wrangle them all, Shou thought to herself.
She supposed they didn’t call her the Tiny Clever Commander for nothing. Even if she really wasn’t that tiny.

🖤 Curse!: Mamizou's balls just can't be drained fast enough! The tanuki's cursed to keep leaking cum, leaving a trail behind her, until she fucks and breeds four people!
Tumblr media
"Fuck, I know my balls are usually pretty big, but for some reason, they feel especially heavy today... I'm going to have to resort to drastic measures to get all this out of me. Thankfully I already know a place where I can find several people in one spot..."
And that place just so happened to by the Myouren Temple. First up was Kyouko, the Temple's guardian. The tanuki was quick to pin down the poor yamabiko and have her way with her. Mamizou hardly cared if anyone watched them fuck outside the Temple, she needed the relief quick. And on top of that, Kyouko's voice amplified the moans that were coming out of her mouth, alerting the other temple residents of what was sure to come for them as well.
Having finished and leaving Kyouko in a conquered puddle of semen, she took off inside the Temple for her next conquest. It didn't take long before she found Nazrin, Shou's subordinate. Knowing how mice love to sniff out things, Mamizou planted that heavy sack right over the smaller animal youkai's head to help her get into a mood before she turned her around and took her from behind. She wasn't even aware if Nazrin was out looking for something while she was out, but any wonders were quickly erased as Mamizou plowed the mouse with thrust after thrust, eventually leaving her too in a thick cum puddle.
Unfortunately she was unable to find Ichirin, and Shou was usually one that she had group sex sessions together with, so she was also out of the question. Would Minamitsu do? No, she came this far, she needed to shoot higher. And that's when it hit her. Her next target was going to be Byakuren. "I'm sorry Lady Hijiri, but I need to do this." The motherly monk was quickly stripped and pinned down, with the tanuki watching those amazing breasts bounce before taking one in her mouth. It was at this point that Mamizou was really caught up in the debauchery that was currently occurring at the Temple, and this made her get more intense for Byakuren especially, every balls-deep thrust hitting her body with great force that lewd slaps of skin filled the Temple in no time. One last deep thrust and she finally flooded her insides, getting a good amount in before pulling out and spraying the last over her ravaged body. It was an amazing sight that could only lead into her last conquest of the day, and she had to save one of the best for last.
It didn't take long for her to seek out Nue, being the best of friends they met together plenty of times before. Mamizou informed her of her current situation, attempting to ease Nue as much as she could before she too was brought to her knees. This is where the tanuki used as much of her energy as she had left, saving it all to give her friend the fucking of her life. Thrust after thrust, whether it was in her mouth, pussy or even her ass, Mamizou made sure Nue felt each and every one. And of course, her present for being such a good friend was a hefty helping of tanuki cum. In her mouth, in her pussy, in her ass... no hole was left unfilled. Of course, she even had to get some on her for good measure. After all was said and done, Mamizou finally sat down, took a long whiff of her pipe, and sighed heavily. "Fuck, this is one of the greatest days of my life..."

"Ah, so you have another friend! That's nice!" Byakuren is legitimately glad that Reimu has someone new to hang out with... even if she is somewhat aware that this is the Hakurei God, she can play dumb for just a moment. She inclines her head in greeting, and clasps her hands. "Good evening. I'm Hijiri Byakuren, a nun at the Myouren temple. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
