The color choices are just amazing! I also really like the different themes you went with. I can see movement in each one and they all invoke a different emotion for me. I really like what you have done!
Pessimistically Optimistic
There is always a path to the end. There is always a struggle at least somewhat. That is what I sought out to explore: the negative aspect that comes with a desired outcome. I wanted to capture the essence of struggle over time. Throughout the pieces, I toyed with so many ideas, many of which did not make it to the final three. I explored ideas of loss and control, of death and rebirth, and that of a fleeting moment. I truly struggled with these pieces and, eventually, found my motivation through that frustration. I explored many avenues for this assignment and dropped more in the process of discovering what path to take with each piece.

Gifs
The readings this week went over the use and power of gifs. I think that gifs are an amazing way to show emotion and get across a point that would be otherwise hard to explain. I think that gifs narrow the boundary between high and low art. I think that gifs are a great way to make art more powerful and show a greater level of detail. Everyone I know loves gifs and think that they are fun and a great way to connect with other people. Overall I think gifs are an astounding invention and really have pushing digital media and art forward.

They way that you used the three pieces to tell a story is really interesting. I really like how it shows a circle rather than a start and an end. The composition really brings the eye in and allows it to focus on the whole story. I also really enjoy the color choices, they give off a sort of comfortable feeling. well done!
Birth, Life, Death
For my project I wanted to focus on these three subjects through the perspective of circles, each representing the different stages of life. I choose the recurrent theme of circles in each piece to imply the circular nature of human existence; we’re born, we live, and we die. This concept is running on repeat, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for as long as existence will have us.
For birth, I choose the dandelion for its delicate and fragile existence. For life, I used the tree ring to represent our annual time keeping, and layered life. And for death, I used a void or black hole, to show the unknown element of what lies thereafter, as it’s not as conclusive as the other two concepts.

This is amazing! It makes me feel like i’m in the 80s. I also get a really strong Lovecraft vibe (I don’t know if thats what your going for but I really like Lovecraft) and It’s super super cool! It makes me think of the show Lovecraft country. I lover they way you give importance to a character using the composition. These are wonderful prices of art!
The Power Within
.
.
We determine our worth, while it may seem like others impressions are foundational; the truth is that our self-image projects outward. I seek to embody the sense of power we can obtain, that anything is possible. In this series, I utilize personal photographs that embody times of my own empowerment. As the saying goes, fragile like a bomb, not like a flower; from roping in the mouth of a bigot to allowing yourself to be worshiped, we are capable and worth far more than most of us believe.
2021. collage of found and personal images.

I really like all of the color choices. They give me a feeling of “the past” and really make me feel like I am taking part in the scene of the art. I also think your composition is excellent, like its showing me a timeline instead of just 1 image. Well done!

Arrival, Mistreatment, Ascension
Art is Joy, Art is Laughter, Art is Emotion. I like my art to make me laugh and be something that I enjoy. I like absurdity, but also getting across a message. If my art makes someone smile or just think about how weird or cool it is I have succeeded. Everything is art and art is everything.

Mixed-Media response
Reading this article helped me understand the pull of mixed media and using collage in your art. Personally Im not a huge fan of it. I really like to use a single media and express myself through that. However after reading this article I can see how mixed media can be used to give a bit more depth to your art. I liked how each artist had their own approach but arrived at a unique yet similar place with their art. In the future I might try out mixed media more!

Postmodern art
To me postmodern art is a way of expressing ones self without having it be so confined to todays idea of what art should be. A lot of art is only validated if it is a piece in a gallery or part of a studio exhibit. Postmodernism is about getting back to the roots of art and showing the world that anything and everything is art. It’s just about expressing yourself and showing the world your feelings.
Types and examples of postmodern art from “Barrett 2008 Approaches to Postmodernism 2″
1. Escaping the confines of museums - “Spiral Jetty”, Earth, Robert Smithson 1999
2. Collapsing Boundaries between “High and Low“ - “Title TBD”, Acrylic on canvas mounted on aluminium frame, Takashi Murakami, 2018
3. Rejecting Originality - “Marilyn Diptych”, Acrylic paint of canvas, Andy Warhol, 1962
4. Jouissance - “On prospère dans l'amour des autres”, Oil paint on canvas, Vittoretti, 2019
5. Working Collaboratively - “Olympic Rings”, Acrylic paint on canvas, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1985
6. Appropriating - “Girl with a pearl cellphone”, Oil paint on canvas, John Jackson, 2014
7. Simulating - “A Harlem Hangover”, buttons, Beau McCall, 2016
8. Hybridizing - “Auto Hybridization Auto hibridacion”, Oil paint on canvas, Fernando A Hernandez, 2012
9. Mixing media - “Rusty”, (collage, paint, stenciling, and a handmade 3D bird filled with luscious, rusted details), Gwen Lafleur, 2020
10. Layering - “Los Moscos”, Acrylic paint on canvas, Mark Bradford, 2004
11. Mixing codes - “Servin with a smile”, Oil paint on canvas, Michael Ray Charles, 1994
12. Recontextualizing - “Starry night in mordor”, Digital, Daobiwan, 2020
13. Confronting the Gaze - could not find title, Digital, Erin Lux, could not find date.
14. Facing the Abject - “self”, blood, Marc Quinn, ongoing
15. Constructing Identities - “Illistration for James Joyce’s Ulysses”, not stated, Mimmo Paladino, 2004

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Once again this is brought to light how much of a weird dystopia china is. Ai is really inspirational. He is using his art as a form of commentary on the Chinese government, and as a way to inform people of their wrongdoings. Throughout the movie I was in awe of Ai and how courageous he is. He is in one of the most unforgiving places when it comes to dissenting opinions, and yet he continues to charge ahead with what he believes in.
Watching this really makes me feel like i’m in a different timer period. It is very similar to back in medieval England where disagreeing with the church meant almost certain death. It feels like the Chinese government is scared, doing everything they can to keep their people believing that nothing can be done and everything is the way it should be. Now more than every I am thankful to live in a place where I am allowed to think for myself and have my own opinions.
Ai’s art is really moving he puts so much rage, emotion and care into it. It shows that he truly cares for china and simple wants it to be a better place for everyone. His exhibition “ According to what?” really hit me hard. He brought up the horrible neglect that the Chinese government shows towards the country, But even more unforgivable is the act of trying to cover up the tragedy. It is as if they are saying that their self image is more important than the lives of the thousands of children that died.
All in all this documentary has introduced me to one of my new favorite artists. Ai is an amazing person and his work is really important in showing the world how bad it really is in china. He is fighting for what he believes in, even though it is putting himself in danger, and that is super powerful. I hope he and many others will get their word through and change china for the better.
