hello! i'm writing an alternate universe fanfiction in which the main character was born and raised jewish (just because i like the idea). however, canonically and in this universe, that character has a twin brother, who in canon is associated with a lot of things that, if applied to a canonically jewish character, would be worrying at the very least (gore, violence, being unsanitary, being the literal representation of repressed (catholic) sin). in fanon, he is also associated with rats/gross animals.

since the mc was born jewish in this au, his twin would obviously be as well.

i don't plan to feature any of the aforementioned topics in my fic (with exception of some violence and the twin being the Bad Guy), but i do plan to make at least the mc's faith clear. can i uncouple the twin from his canon character enough that i can keep my jewish mc, is there anything i can do to avoid an antisemitic characterisation, or should i leave my hands off the two? (i don't mean to "reclaim" this character, because i'm not jewish and the canon character isn't either)

Jewish twin associated with gore, rats, and repressed sin

If Good Twin converted instead of being born into it, that fixes the Bad Twin Antisemitism problem and leaves the Rat Twin as a gentile--which is more appropriate for a character you said represents a Christian version of sin, anyway. Converts are 100% Jewish so the end result would be the same. Would that work for you?

If Bad Twin is offscreen the whole time some people may not think of him in this context, but you may not feel comfortable risking that.

I agree with Shira: if Bad Twin is the representation of Christian sin, then it’s best to steer away from making him Jewish, since this is how some powerful Christians have seen us and continue to see us.

The association with rats in fanon would further complicate this. Although Shira may well be right that no one would think of the twin being Jewish if you don’t include him in the AU, I can’t help thinking that the wrong people would pick up on it. By the wrong people, I mean the core of anti-Semites who can recognise us irl even when we’re trying to conceal our identities for our safety. I also mean any fans who are prone to reading uncharitably and throwing internet rocks for perceived missteps.

I think Shira’s suggestion of making Good Twin a convert is an excellent one. If you have follow-up questions on how this would fit in with the story, feel free to put them in the comments.

the incredibly ominous “DONT FORGET” in all caps, which is too far away from any particular piece of text to clue the reader in to what, exactly, he is supposed to not be forgetting

“no boiling water (ruins le”  - which i can only presume was supposed to say “ruins leaves” and then Logan literally got distracted halfway through writing the sentence

“dish soap” written at the very bottom and completely contextless

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been asked before—if a person is bilingual (signs BSL and LSF for example), would their name sign be the same in both languages or would they have to get separate names from the respective Deaf community?

I don’t think I actually met someone who would be truly bilingual in the sense of “was raised in home where two sign languages were used”. I do know deaf people who can speak more than one sign language, but they learned the other sign languages later in life.

(thats not to say its impossible to happen, just not very common)

Anyway, I would say the parents/family would just pick one name sign. You don’t get different name sign for every deaf community you visit and when people move, their name signs generally stay the same. I suppose there might be exception if the name sign meant something rude in the other language or if it was a name sign of someone significant in that deaf community, but thats just my speculation, I haven’t heard of that happening.

1. Where are you on the aromantic spectrum?

I’m just... aromantic. I’ve suspected I might be arospike because I’ve had occasionally a couple days where I suddenly felt all sort of weird emotions for a friend, but I don’t know whether it was actually romantic attraction. So generally I only refer to myself as aromantic.

3. How long have you identified as aro-spec?

I believe I started considering myself arospec when I was around 15, so it’s about 7-8 years now.

Updated My Blog!

I fixed my HORRENDOUS about me page- It’s much more chill now and closer to me as a person instead of sixteen year old me tryna be fake deep lmao.

And I’ve added a wip page! FINALLY! If you’re curious about the stories I’ve been working on recently, go ahead and check that out and the accompanying tags!

I’ve also went ahead and added a page, mostly as a reminder for myself, but in case anyone else is interested, listing what tags I use to archive helpful posts I found.
