Where’s the liberation? . . Posted @withrepost • @resmaamenakem "Where has the ‘George Floyd racial justice money’ gone? Most companies that made splashy announcements in June 2020 pledged to invest and distribute those funds over 3-5 years. It’s now 27 months later. What are their plans for the billions that remain unspent and uncommitted?" Honored to have had this critical #ReRooted podcast conversation with #MyGrandmothersHands @nytimes bestselling author & SEP & therapist @resmaamenakem about the ways our trauma healing communities fall short and can cause harm, what needs to be done differently, and why interrogating and abolishing whiteness and white body supremacy is key to fostering cultural trauma healing, growth and equity and liberation for all. Link in bio Repost from @francescamaxime • #Repost @beherenownetwork with @download_repost ・・・ “The moment we start to experience any discomfort. We create these very elaborate dodges around it that look like healing, that look like social moving and caring, but are actually dodges.” – Resmaa Menake, ReRooted Podcast: Ep. 13 Check out this new episode of the Rerooted podcast! @francescamaxime shares a conversation with author, social worker, & psychotherapist @resmaamenakem around working with racialized trauma on a collective level. Find this and other new podcasts from the Be Here Now Network in our bio! This podcast is brought to you in part by our friends at @1440Multiversity! We carry our stories inside of us. Some are easier to tell than others. There are tales we polish into well-formed, amusing anecdotes. Others we bury deep until they rise up and take us by surprise. Some we don’t even know we carry—these stories are born from secrets we’ve kept or the secrets we uncover. Join New York Times best-selling author Dani Shapiro. For an experience that will continue to transform you long after you return home. This workshop is inspired by her most recent memoir, Inheritance, in which she unlocks her own identity after learning a deeply buried family secret. In it she integrates her expertise in excavating life stories and articulating the transcendence of self-discovery and self-definition. Friends, especially my white friends, please check out and support the work of @resmaamenakem, author of #MyGrandmothersHands, and a recent guest on @onbeing (link in bio), where he says,⠀ ⠀ "So the premise of the work is predicated on the idea that there was a certain time where the white body became the supreme standard by which all bodies’ humanity shall be measured. If you don’t understand that, everything about America will confuse you. Everything about racialization will confuse you. ⠀ ⠀ The book, the practices therein, and the free e-course offered by Mr. Menakem are foundational to current movement work in #culturalsomatics.⠀ ⠀ "Trauma decontextualized in a person looks like personality. Trauma decontextualized in a family looks like family traits. Trauma in a people looks like culture."⠀ ⠀ "'White-body supremacy trauma' is a trauma that we all – including white identified individuals, communities and systems – integrate into our bodies and structures. We need to address this trauma directly in our bodies - not just in our minds. ⠀ ⠀ "I want to inspire my community and humanity to acknowledge their 'white-body supremacy trauma' and find pathways to heal. I want to help you metabolize the decontextualized internalized 'white body supremacy' energy to create fuel for freedom.⠀ ⠀ "[There’s a lot of problems with the way progressives approach all this, well-meaningly. And one of them is that rather than creating culture, they create strategy — which, again, is a head move; it’s a cognitive move…⠀ ⠀ "...[T]here’s the vagal nerve — I call that the soul nerve — and then there’s a muscle, the psoas muscle. That psoas is a beast, because the psoas, what it does is, it connects the top part of the body with the bottom part of the body. It also — if you’re braced, it also manages whether or not you mobilize or immobilize. And if you’re born to people who are already braced, you pick up in your psoas this kind of locking down, this kind of bracing, decontextualized." ⠀ ⠀ We white people must do the work in our bodies, and in the cultural body, and the work of making something more culturally compelling and more magnetic than white body supremacy. https://www.instagram.com/p/CBY3ERjgLWw/?igshid=1j94dc10n1ja1

Powerful book with exercises for healing trauma. “There’s a way out of this mess, and it requires each of us to begin with our own body. You and your body are important parts of the solution. You will not just read this book; you will experience it in your body. Your body—all of our bodies—are where changing the status quo must begin.” ― Resmaa Menakem, My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies #resmaamenakem #mygrandmothershands #healingtrauma https://www.instagram.com/p/CBEoVe7hqPM/?igshid=r35k8tpzyxx2

Perhaps self-indulgent, but this makes me happy. Thanks to the swelling and pain in my fingers and hands, thanks to osteoarthritis, it has been a few years since I could wear my entire wedding set from my darling husband. Today I can slip them on. Of course I can feel the joints in my hand and fingers swell up as soon as I do and I know it will likely be a struggle to get them off later. Nevertheless, this makes me happy as I reflect on the 36+ years we have shared together. #selfindulgent #makesmehappy #weddingset #36yearsmarried #osteoarthritis #oldladyproblems #mygrandmothershands https://www.instagram.com/p/B5REBumnQ-_/?igshid=bskqx130wb1t
