This past Tuesday night I had the honor of representing the animation community along with my fellow animators at the Atlanta Film Society’s event “Eat Drink & B-Indie”. We had a wonderful turn out! 

We each shared about our positions in the field and our process with producing animation. I represented the small scale productions that create original content. We got to share our work and our process, and I was able to show my progress thus far on [Taco Tension] - Which I’ll post here soon so stay tuned.

Each of the panelist brought their own goodies so we were able to put together 6 swag bags for the audience members! There were great questions among the attendees, but one got to me: 

A man in the back of the tavern asked “How do you stay motivated and optimistic in the field? When you’re not able to find work or are not hearing back from anyone?”  

I know that feeling so well. Especially with the cycles of the industry and working mostly solitary.

I said how important it is to stay connected and go to networking events. Seeing what others are up to gives us a grid of what’s current and what’s successful. It’s so easy to fall through the cracks (especially me because location wise, I’m not exactly in the middle of the buzz... more like just hanging in suburbia land). So I have to go out of my way to find these events and keep going to them... you never know who you’ll rub elbows with and almost 100% of my referrals are from people I know. 

We have to keep creating and producing art that we love. I once heard that luck is when opportunity meets preparedness. You never really know what lies ahead until it’s right in front of your face.

Having the support of these guys makes what I do  so much more fun - Tyler Larson, Kathy Jo Ryan (yours truly), Madison Jett Fisher, Richard von Ravensberg

In my opinion, I see the animation community as one big family. You’re only one or two people away from knowing everybody (the animation world is a small world). But we’re all in this together, and when one artists succeeds, we all succeed. 

Thank you Atlanta Film Society for having us and highlighting animation. I’m pumped to see what kind of filmmaking will come out of Atlanta!
