A is the local mildly intimidating loner that nobody particularly likes but whose family has lived in the area for centuries and character B is a ray of sunshine and seemingly the embodiment of innocence and goodness that everyone immediately adores even though they just moved in... which is why A grows increasingly desperate to prove that B has been trying to assassinate them.

Regular Prompts

1) Person A is a town local no one likes who witnessed a murder but doesn’t say anything because they’re not certain what they saw since it was Halloween. Person B comes to town and is nice and manages to win everyone over, even Person A. But B asks a lot of questions and if A’s being honest with themselves they look like the murderer from Halloween. They slowly realize B is the person and that they’re in town to kill them.

2) Person A is a local no one likes and Person B is their friendly and charming new neighbor who wants to kill them. While they act friendly around everyone else they’re completely different around A. Person A tries to tell people but just ends up looking jealous for attention. There’s a party coming up and Person A doesn’t usually go but they’re determined to prove B is horrible so they go to start a fight. (Bonus if the fight either makes people believe A or B refuses to fight so A looks like an asshole.)

3) Person A’s always lived in town and is known as the person no one likes. When Person B moves into town everyone adores them, but A can sense something’s just off about them. Turns out they’re a murderer but A can’t prove it. Person B hangs around A more explaining they don’t like to be spied on. Person A is determined to get them locked away forever. Person B tells them they plan on doing the same. (Bonus if B gets framed for B’s crimes.)

4) Person A tries to convince everyone the friendly Person B that moved to town is a psycho and that they’re out to get them. They’re perceived as crazy and are put in the hospital. Person B always visits them and is kind and gentle with them. A begins to doubt themselves and soon they begin to believe B’s not who they thought and that their gut feeling told them they were. They apologize to B and tell them they plan on telling the nurses they’re innocent. But the second they say that B reveals their true self and they’re exactly like A said they were. Person a goes crazy and tries to tell people but they just sedate them. (Bonus if B decides not to kill A and tells them they like watching them suffer like this anyway.)

5) Person A is convinced B is trying to kill them because bad things keep happening to them. When everyone tries to convince them otherwise they try to find proof but B continues to be nice to them. When A gives up and tells everyone they were mistaken they apologize to B over dinner. (Bonus if when they’re alone at B’s house afterwards B reveals their true self or B tells them all the bad things that happened were all accidents and that they were just trying to get A’s attention because they liked them.)

6) Person A doesn’t like B even though they’re super sweet to everyone in town they just met. They’re polite and nice but A is the only one who senses something’s just not right about them. When A sneaks around B’s house one night they see B killing someone inside. They call the police and tell them everything but when they go to B’s house the place is spotless and B tells them they were just baking cookies. The police leave and Person B looks to Person A and gives them this unsettling smile before going back inside. They’re then convinced B is out to get them.

7) Person A thinks B is a murderer out to get them while pretending to be nice to everyone else. But it turns out B is a murderer looking for a partner. This terrifies A at first but once they see how B is only killing bad people they decide it can’t be that bad.

8) Person A isn’t fooled by B’s lies like everyone and assumes they’re some sort of assassin with how they’re drawn to A most of the time. They try to convince others B is out to get them but the others don’t take them seriously. When A finally confronts B about the who assassin thing they only laugh and explain that they’re actually a demon and were drawn to A because A’s the only one who could sense their energy. (Bonus if that’s how A finds out they’re half demon or something.)

9) Person A is a recluse put in charge by their family to guard their magic and person B is the one trying to break them out of their shell and are constantly being nice to them. Person A thinks they’re great at first but they soon discover that B knows about them. Like, a lot, about them and they think back to the words their parents said about how someone would come for them to try to take their magic away. They think B is the one and try to convince everyone B is evil, which B denies and asks A what’s wrong. (Bonus if B only knows about A because they wanted to know more about their history in the town and C is actually the one after them.)

10) Person A rarely leaves their house but when they do everyone in town stares because they’re old money or something. But everyone doesn’t like A anyway. When B comes to town and their happy and smiley and nice to everyone A is convinced it’s all an act because no one could ever be that nice. B is especially nice to A, baking them cookies, sending them food. Person A thinks B is trying to poison them and they’re constantly being rude to B. Everyone shames A but B never says anything and just tries harder the next day. Eventually Person A finds them at their door and gets angry claiming they know B wants to kill them. But B just apologizes and confesses they just wanted A to like them because they’re not used to people not liking them. (Bonus if A feels bad and invites them in and they actually turn out to be good friends.)

My Top 20 BKDK Moments (So Far)

#20. YOU MADE THAT BORROWED POWER  YOUR OWN

3.19 “RUSH!” Provisional License Exam Arc

What Happens: Bakugo asks Midoriya if he’s made ‘that borrowed power’ his own, complimenting him indirectly by saying that of course he passed. Deku gets super excited at being complimented by him.

Why I like it: For all the shit they throw at one another early on, BK & DK do really look up to/respect each other. They won’t admit it easily, but scenes like this (and a later scene in Chapter 194, where Deku compliments Kacchan and he too reacts extremely) showcase that respect. I love it. Also, Kacchan knows Deku’s AM’s inheritor already.

#19. HAVE YOU GOTTEN ANY BETTER? (Manga)

Chapter 168 “The Strange Tale of Aoyama” Interlude arcs

What happens. Post Internship arc, Bakugo asks Deku if he’s gotten any better since they last talked. Deku says no, and Bakugo reminds him that he said he’d surpass him. This prompts Deku to work harder.

Why I like it: Ideal RivalShipping is about two characters pushing each other to be their best selves. Bakugo is great at getting Deku to try harder, just as Deku prompts his best self.

#18. YOUR QUIRK IS AMAZING, KACCHAN

Backstory flashback, multiple times. Mostly Battle Trial Arc

What happens: Baby Deku and Kacchan walk through the woods together, talking about quirks, before DK is found to be quirkless. This is one of many scenes of Baby Deku and Kacchan being casual friends.

Why I like it: I love the cute scenes of them as kids, where they seem to be actual friends and hang out together, bonding over All-Might and quirks and heroes. I hope we get to see them hang out like that again as adults some day.

#17. SECRET OFA TALKS (MANGA SPOILERS!)

Chapter 217: End of joint Training Arc

What Happens: Kacchan joins in the AM and Deku talks (for the 2nd time) to discuss what’s happening with OFA. He also works with Deku on trying to master his new ability.

Why I like it: Bakugo is instantly able to help Deku zero in on the information he needs up joining the secret OFA talks, in a way that AM wasn’t able to. He makes a great partner for Deku here, getting right to the point and refusing to waste time.

#16. “I COULD MOVE LIKE KACCHAN”

Hero-Killer Arc, 2.14-2.19

What Happens: Deku is trying to master OFA. He thinks about how he wants to move, and uses Kacchan’s moves as his model. He’s able to discover Full Cowling like this, which lets him fight Stain and do well in the race - and everyone notices (Iida, Uraraka, Todoroki, Bakugo) that he’s moving like Kacchan.

Why I like it: Deku has lots of moments where he thinks “What would Kacchan do” or tries to model himself on the guy. He admires the crap out of him - but not in the blind way he tries to imitate AM, or Ochaco tries to imitate Deku, or Iida Ingenium. Because Deku doesn’t hero-worship Baku, but sees his flaws, he’s able to imitate him without losing himself.

#15. “HE’S AMAZING”

Battle Trial Arc, 1.07-1.08

What happens: Midoriya and Uraraka are pitted against Kacchan and Iida in mock battle. Midoriya goes on and on and on about how awesome Kacchan is and how much he wants to beat him - first in a speech to Uraraka, later telling Bakugo to his face.

Why I like it: Deku really looks up to Kacchan, and even at their most adversarial, he still talks about him in positive terms and speaks of him as a cool guy he wants to surpass. Deku doing this is also good for Bakugo, since he’s able to acknowledge his flaws and strengths without kissing his ass like his sidekicks in middle school; Deku beating him upsets his pride and sets off his Character Development.

#14. TWIN STARS OF CLASS 1-A

3.17 Class 1-A, License Exam Arc

What Happens: Aizawa meta’s about his class with Ms Joke, explaining that Deku and Kacchan are the center of every Class A incident, and despite not getting along, their presence elevates everyone else up.

Why I like it: The staff of UA seem to ship BKDK. They teamed them up to fight AM and encourage them to get along. Aizawa sees clearly how each one inspires everyone else. This speech groups them together as a duo who act in tandem. Twin Stars.

#13. “THE MOST AMAZING HERO ALWAYS WINS IN THE END.”

2.24 “Katsuki Bakugo origin” Flashback

What happens. Baby Kacchan fights off a bunch of older kids, even though he’s in tears. Baby Deku watches him from afar and looks deeply impressed.

Why I like it: Deku seems to have admired Kacchan since he was really, really young. I’m not sure when this scene takes place, but Deku’s big smile and wide, shining eyes when watching Bakugo seem like a mark of affection and love to me.

#12. ABOUT MY/YOUR SHOOT STYLE

3.23 Deku vs Kacchan Part 2

What happens: Post Fight, under house arrest alone, Deku and Kacchan have a very civil conversation, where depending on the translation either Deku brings up Shoot style and asks for advice, or Kacchan offers it on his own. Ends with Deku smiling.

Why I like it: Post-DVK2, they immediately establish that they’re now capable of talking to each other in civil terms. Kacchan gives Deku civil advice, and despite saying ‘it pissed me off’, the whole exchange is beautifully positive.

#11. GET OUT OF MY WAY, DEKU

1.12 All Might USJ Arc

What happens: Deku jumps in to save Al Might and is nearly killed by Kurogiri. At the last second Kacchan saves him by taking down Kurogiri. Also Later Kacchan is nearly killed and Deku screams in horror.

Why I like it: Bakugo doesn’t have a ton of scenes where he saves Deku, but the few times he does save someone/show concern for them, it’s usually him. This is Baku’s first save, and though he phrases it in rude terms, he still does it. Actions> words.

#10. WELL, NOW I’M EVEN MORE EAGER (MANGA)

Chapter 202, joint Training Arc

What Happens: Deku and AM go off to talk OFA. Kacchan refuses to be left out and joins them voluntarily. Noticing Deku is upset he encourages him in his own way, which AM observes. Once Deku smiles, Kacchan goes back to being his abrasive self.

Why I Like it: Baku is newly nicer (in his Tsundere way) after DVK2. He’s actually able to be kind to Deku and encouraging. This is similar to the advice the OFA users give Deku later, which helps him actually use the power. OFA Co-conspirators FTW.

#9. NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

3.11-3.12 US of Smash

What Happens: Post All Might’s fight, Kacchan notices Deku’s tears and AM’s words, and puts the pieces together. He asks AM about Deku and when he’s shot down he remains quiet and brooding.

Why I like it: Bakugo changes forever in this section of the story. He realizes the truth about Deku. He blames himself for ending AM. He asks about Deku and shows awareness that something’s up with him. It’s all very self-aware and sweet.

#8. YOU’RE PROBABLY THE MOST FRUSTRATED OF ALL

3.04-3.10 Training Camp and Hideout Raid Arcs

What Happens: While fighting Muscular, Deku learns that Kacchan is in danger. He goes psycho Madman Deku mode for the whole Training Camp Arc, refusing to pause or rest until he’s saved Kacchan. He falls apart when Kacchan is taken, then immediately goes off to save him again even though he could die.

Why I like it. Deku likes saving people in general, but when someone threatens Kacchan, he goes crazy in a way he doesn’t for anyone else. He spends this whole arc hopped up on “Must save Kacchan” juice and keeps pushing and going no matter what. He cares about the guy, no two ways about it.

#7. DON’T COME, DEKU

3.07 “What a Twist!”

What happens: Bakugo is captured by villains. He’s being dragged through the portal and Deku comes barreling towards him with two broken arms, fully prepared to jump through the portal and die just to save him. Bakugo tells him not to and Deku listens.

Why I like it: Though this arc is filled with Deku being crazy protective of Baku, Baku gets his own fair share in right here. He tells Deku not to basically die protecting him, and Deku listens. Baku basically saves his life here, at the expense of his own.

#6. “ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? ARE YOU HURT?”

Backstory flashback repeated a lot.

What happens: Baby Kacchan slips and falls into a creek. Baby Deku goes down to help him up and asks if he’s ok. This offends Baby Kacchan’s pride.

Why I like it: Bakugo probably never had anyone treat him like a fallible human being until Deku came along. Everyone told him he was amazing and could never be hurt - but Deku doesn’t. That bruises his ego at first, but in reality it’s exactly what he needs: Someone who cares about him and will protect him, while still admiring him. (Plus this scene is cute).

#5. HOW CAN HE SMILE… (MANGA SPOILERS. MASSIVE ONES)

Chapter 210, Joint Training Arc

What Happens: In an effort to piss Deku off and get him to talk, Monoma using Shinso’s power taunts him about Bakugo, saying that Bakugo shouldn’t be able to smile since he destroyed All Might. Deku’s new quirk goes PsychoBerserker out of control in response.

Why I like it: Deku’s power-ups are often connected with Baku in some way. Like many superpowers, OFA seems to be fueled by emotions. So targeting Bakugo brings out Deku’s greatest powers. In this case, though, it’s not a villain trying to hurt him. It’s someone insulting him. And that means Deku will defend Kacchan’s honor and feelings as well as his safety.

#4. I GOT MY QUIRK FROM SOMEONE ELSE

1.08 “Bakugo’s Start Line”

What Happens: Post Battle Trial Arc, Bakugo is in emotional freeful. Deku notices and chases after him, telling him for no goddamn good reason that he has an inherited power. Kacchan doesn’t believe him and instead pours his heart out to him, crying and promising to beat him.

Why I like it: Buncha reasons. 1) Deku ditches all his lovely friends, including Ochaco, to go comfort Kacchan. Even in the same way Ochaco just ditched Kaminari. 2) Deku tells Kacchan about OFA. He won’t tell anyone else, he just decided comforting Kacchan was more important than his entire reason for being here. 3) Kacchan cries in front of Deku and tells him how he feels insecure. He doesn’t do that in front of anyone else. 4) Warm lighting, deep eye contact, and the beginning of a beautiful rivalry.

#3. DEKU AND KACCHAN VS ALL MIGHT

2.24 “Katsuki Bakugo Origin”

What happens: Deku and Kacchan work together to fight AM, after a nasty fight. Deku calls Kacchan out for not being himself. Kacchan sacrifices his body to make sure Deku can escape. Deku socks AM in the face to protect Kacchan. They win.

Why I like it: For a moment that started out so dark (sock to the face), this one gets sweet fast. On Deku’s side: He reprimands Kacchan for not acting like himself, compliments his can-do- attitude, and works together with him, overcoming his fear; he finds the strength to punch AM in the face to save Kacchan, with a callback to ep 2. Kacchan’s strength helps Deku win. On Kacchan’s side: He works with Deku to win, giving him his gauntlet, and sacrifices his safety so Deku can get out, even sounding kinda concerned for him when he gets in danger. They showcase what a great team they could/will make when they work together.

#2. MY LEGS MOVED BEFORE I COULD THINK

Chapter 1/Episode 2: Izuku Midoriya Origin/What it Takes to be a Hero

What happens: Deku, in a fit of depression, sees the monster AM saved him from suffocating some kid. He’s freaking out till he sees that it’s Kacchan. He runs into deadly danger to save Kacchan, inspiring AM to save them both.

Why I like it: Because this moment changed Deku’s entire life and Kacchan’s as well. Deku’s legs ‘move’ before he can think. And it’s explicitly because it’s Kacchan in danger; he doesn’t move until he sees Kacchan’s terrified eyes. Kacchan also shows concern for Deku, telling him to get away (he didn’t say that to the pros trying to save him) so he doesn’t die. This is another scene that follows up on an awful fight between the two, and changes both lives forever. Saving Kacchan gets Deku OFA. Being saved by Deku opens Kacchan to his humility for the first time and stops him from hassling Deku. Plus, just a super-snippy moment to me.

Why I like it: AM himself says it. They’re perfectly matched. They need each other to become the greatest heroes. Kacchan knows he can only talk to Deku about how he’s feeling; nobody else can receive his feelings. Deku loves and admires Kacchan as his friend, not his Great Hero like AM. It’s just perfect.

Under the cut find all of Stella’s filmography listed out/my opinions and recommendations. Favorites are italicized. (SPOILERS under the cut!)(also feel free to message with questions!):

Liminality (2005)- A movie short, it’s nowhere online that I could find unfortunately. Transamerica (2005)- Stella has no lines and she’s in one scene kissing the main character boy for 2 seconds. The movie itself is unfortunate I’m told, so skip it. Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2005)- She’s in two episodes in the same year as a small part. She’s not in the show long enough to make the effort. Skip. Law & Order (2005)- same as above, though now that I’m remembering one of the three early Law & Order episodes was impossible to find, so she might have a bigger part in the missing episode. Hit me up if you know. Euthanasia (2006)- Another short nowhere on the internet. Remember the Daze (2007)- Absolutely watch this, please. It’s adorable and Stella is CUTE AS HECK. It was supposed to be a modernized Dazed and Confused and never really took off, but it’s a fun watch and for young actress Stella content it’s A+. The Bronx Is Burning (2007)- Stella plays one of the first victims of Son of Sam. Less than a minute of content, pass it up. Harold (2008)- Do. Not. Watch. This. It’s a terrible movie. Also her hair isn’t good. Brooklyn's Finest (2009)- She plays a daughter of a cop, less than 30 seconds of screentime. Skip it. (fun fact, Mayakovsky is in this) Gossip Girl (2008-2009)- Stella is cute in the first episode, less so in the second she’s in. Watch the first, skip the second. Asylum Seekers (2009)- Ok ok ok, this movie is weird as FUCK. I wouldn’t recommend it as a movie, never, BUT. Stella is adorable in it, she’s got these braids and this dumb outfit that’s to die for. If you can find it (which will be hard), I’d say give it a shot if you’re craving Stella Maeve content. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2009)- I’d recommend this episode. I’ll admit to being gay and appreciating the shower scene. She’s also cute in it and I want to wrap her character in a hug and take care of her. Accused at 17 (2009)- If you like Lifetime Movies I’d give this one a go. As an avid fan of Lifetime Movies, I’d say this is a midrange example. See Kate Run (2009)- I could not find this anywhere at all online, which leads me to believe it might have been an unaired pilot. The Runaways (2010)- WATCH THE RUNAWAYS. Please WATCH THE RUNAWAYS. Stella is SO GREAT as Sandy West. She’s not in it nearly enough but besides Dakota and Kristen, Stella gets the most screen time of the rest of the girls. My Super Psycho Sweet 16 : Part 2 (2010) - Sure, watch this if you like bad made for MTV movies about serial killers. She has pink streaks in her hair which matters to me. Bones (2010) - Yes, watch this episode. Her style is great and she’s in the episode enough for it to feel worth the effort. House (2010-2011)- Stella plays an underaged girl that Chase sleeps with at a wedding. Uncomfortable all around. I’d pass. Funny or Die Presents... (2011)- Not in it long enough, pass. Lovelives (2011)- Could not find. Perhaps another unaired pilot? Grey's Anatomy (2012)- Absolutely watch this episode. Stella is wonderful in it, she breaks my heart. Cloned: The Recreator Chronicles (2012)- Very weird, but fun! Watch it for pretty and quirky Stella. Starlet (2012)- There is actual porn in this movie. I’m not joking. (it is not Stella). It’s also not a very good movie. Pass. Golden Boy (2013)- I’m sorry, Stella, this is the most boring show I’ve ever watched in my entire life. Maybe watch the pilot to get some Stella character angst, but that’s all. All Together Now (2013)- This is kind of like a more boring version of Remember The Daze. If you have time to kill and want to see Stella running around having fun and looking cute, go for it. Don’t expect a masterpiece. Company Town (2013)- Nowhere online, it’s an unaired pilot created by Sera Gamble. I want it. SERA @ ME. Rizzoli & Isles (2014)- Stella SINGS. Watch it just for that. I love her voice. Buttwhistle (2014)- Please. I beg of you. Do not watch this. The Park Bench (2014)- Skip it UNLESS you get the movie free on Amazon Prime. She’s very cute and giggly and adorable, but it’s one scene. Dark Summer (2015)- Run of the mill horror movie. Watch if you like horror or like me had someone to squirm with, skip if you don’t. Chicago P.D. (2014-2015)- If you can, watch all of Stella as Nadia Decotis. I would strangle anyone who tried to hurt Nadia with my bare hands. Ending is shitty but she had to leave to do The Magicians. Flipped (2015)- Stella is the only actor shown on screen for 90% of the movie. She gives a wonderful performance. The feeling is claustrophobic and uncomfortable, I’d recommend watching with someone if you can! But do watch it! Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2006-2016)- Stella is in one episode as a minor character in 2006 and then plays Nadia in two others.The two episodes in 2016 are the end of Nadia’s character arc so if you’ve managed to watch it, watch those. I’d also recommend the 2006 episode, however she’s only in it for about one minute. Long Nights Short Mornings (2016)- Skip it unless you want to watch Stella in a steamy sex scene up against a wall.... which lets be real is a handful of you. For those of you interested, the movie is cut up into segments, her segment is “Lily”. Take the 10 (2017)- Not nearly enough Stella. I wouldn’t watch it again, but you should watch once. God Friended Me (2019)- Watch for cute cook Stella. The Magicians (2015-)- WATCH THE MAGICIANS.

The Best Films of 2018, Part III

GOOD MOVIES

70. Mid90s (Jonah Hill)- I usually applaud filmmakers for letting visuals tell the story instead of spelling everything out, but Mid90s needs to spell some more stuff out, especially at the truncated end. His brother brought him an orange juice, so all of the abuse is forgotten? I need a bit more there.

I was always going to be in the tank for this though, having been the same age as the protagonist at the time, owning some of the same shirts as him and hanging some of the same posters on my wall. Despite the "My First Screenplay" beef I had up top, each supporting character gets something to do. Hill shows promise as a director (and the fingerprints of his influences) by being able to shift between poles of emotions in a matter of seconds.

69. McQueen (Ian Bonhote)- Although it waits too long to get into McQueen's depression, this documentary does an adequate job of showing the ups and downs of his life. It was great seeing things I've only read about, like the Voss show.

Here's the thing though: I'm not a genius, but if I were, I would hope that my closest friends and advisers would be able to articulate what made me great. A little less "We were working sixteen-hour days." A little more "He changed art forever."

68. Beautiful Boy (Felix Van Groeningen)- For better and worse, this portrait of a parent's worst nightmare is unrelenting. Surprisingly, the toughest moment is when Nic is fierce with pride, clean for fourteen months. Because when you pause and see that there's an hour left in the movie, you shudder at how low he might end up going.

Van Groeningen's sort of french braid of past and present hasn't changed for his English-language debut, but things worked best for me when he locked in on Timothee Chalamet's mannered but touching performance. I wish the movie had a proper ending.

67. The Kindergarten Teacher (Sara Colangelo)- This takes a little while to get sick and twisted, but I liked it once it did. Part of why it works is Gyllenhaal's commitment to the role. As dark as the character gets--and the film does seem hell-bent on establishing her as a failure when I'm not sure that's true--Gyllenhaal never judges her. It's probably her best performance since SherryBaby.

As for Gael Garcia Bernal, who plays a poetry professor who kisses people and then apologizes and says that he misread the moment and acts all bashful, are we sure about him? Are we sure he's good at acting?

66. The Spy Who Dumped Me (Susanna Fogel)- The spywork of the last half-hour is way too convoluted, but the comedy is fast and loose in service of a sweet female friendship. We're at the stage with the genius of Kate McKinnon in which I just assume that she came up with anything funny on the spot. For example, there's an off-hand joke that her character went to camp with Edward Snowden and was surprised that the news didn't mention how "into ska" he was. It's so bizarre that it had to be improv. Later, when Edward Snowden shows up as a character, I had to admit that the movie was tightly written. But I assumed it was McKinnon first. 65. Ready Player One (Steven Spielberg)- Halfway through Ready Player One, there's a sequence that takes place inside The Overlook Hotel of The Shining. The characters are walking through a photorealistic recreation of that setting, down to the smallest details, but it has been repurposed with different angles for this film. Not only have I literally never seen something like this in a movie, but I never imagined the possibility of such a thing existing. And somehow...it's corny and derivative.

So goes Ready Player One. It takes the simple pleasures of a Chosen One narrative with a killer villain, loads every corner of the frame with Ryu or Beetlejuice or a Goldie Wilson campaign poster, and punishes you with maximalism. Each piece reliably contributes to the whole, sometimes in thrilling and amusing fashion, but no matter when you check your watch, forty-five minutes are left.

When imdb came out, Steven Spielberg was one of the first people I looked up. What shocked me was how many projects I attributed to his direction when he had only produced them. In my kid brain, Spielberg had directed Gremlins or Goonies or An American Tail. They had his imprimatur of whimsy and wonder and childhood identification even if they were, you know, a bit more conventional and less purposeful than the movies he directed. Well, not since Tintin has there been a Steven Spielberg-directed film that feels more Spielberg-produced.

My favorite reference was the Battletoads. Or more accurately, imagining the seventy-two-year-old filmmaker going, "Oh, you know I gotta get the 'Toads up in this bih!"

64. Ben Is Back (Peter Hedges)- Despite a little bit of note-card screenwriting--"Get a line about how insurance doesn't care about drug addiction in there!"--The first two-thirds take their time revealing information to the viewer, dropping bread crumbs of the family history quite gracefully. Roberts and Hedges play off each other well, and their charisma powers the first half. She, of course, has an ample bag of Movie Star tricks, but, surprisingly, he already does too. You can see, in the confrontation at the mall, for example, how the mother's dissembling and conniving would pass down to him.

So it's a real bummer when the final third decides to separate the leads and rushes to a baffling conclusion. It falls apart like few movies in recent memory.

63. Avengers: Infinity War (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo)- Whatever. I admire the skill that it must have taken to balance the revolving wheel of characters--even if it does feel like check-ins half the time. The movie is exhausting in a bad way until it's exhausting in a good way. More importantly, here are my power rankings. (Their power in my own heart. Thanos is obviously the most powerful.)

Like, he misses a day of shooting just because he forgot?) 28. Vision 29. Whatever Peter Dinklage Was

62. The Old Man & the Gun (David Lowery)- Sissy Spacek's character explains, on a tour of her house, that she pulled up some wallpaper and found a signature from 1881 underneath, which is so unique that--ugly as it is--she couldn't bear to cover it. The movie is sort of about that. Does a way of life from a long time ago matter now?

Does it matter how you present yourself? How much does intention cancel out action?

The questions play themselves out in a way that is formally interesting--Lowery swish-pans and advances the scenes in a way that he hasn't since Ain't Them Bodies Saints--but informally pretty dull. Redford is engaging as possible, but I feel like I maxed out on my concern for a person who refuses to change.

I've had the Sean Penn "on one" scale for a long time, but I'm introducing the "off one" scale for Casey Affleck, who is so purposefully muted that he seems like he's going to pass out in some scenes. Keep doing you, Case. As far as acting goes.

61. Disobedience (Sebastian Lelio)- I admired how little the film spelled out about the setting and the characters' pasts. The beginning is cautious without being slow, and the women seem drawn to each other with a sort of magnetism that is difficult to pull off. While the triangle of people at the center is realistic and fair, the picture is ultimately a bit staid. I don't want melodrama out of the story either, but I do think it would work better if the characters were more passionate about anything, even the religion that makes them lack passion. 60. Crazy Rich Asians (Jon M. Chu)- This movie is sweet, and it nails the rom-com fulcrum scenes that it has to. Hear me out though: Both of the leads are winning, and Henry Golding's charm keeps us from acknowledging that his character is a psycho. Here is a list of things that, over the course of a year, he does not bother to tell his girlfriend:

a. That his family is the wealthiest in Singapore. Or wealthy at all. But more notably, he tells Rachel no details at all about his family, such as his brothers' and sisters' names. b. That he skipped an important trip home a few months ago, which caused a rift in his family. c. How to pack or dress for their trip to visit his family. d. That his mother did not want them sleeping together at her house, not that he "wants her all to himself." e. That his family wants him to take over their business, which would necessitate a permanent move to Singapore. f. That he went out with one of the women attending the bachelorette party, and that this woman has very good reason to sabotage Rachel and Nick's current relationship. g. That the wedding they're attending is also a super-rich affair that will be covered by international media. h. That the wedding party they're attending the night before is a formal affair with hundreds of guests, not the "family party" that he presents it as. By the way, this is one of the two times that he not only doesn't accompany her to an event, expecting her to meet him there and find him, but he doesn't even send a car. i. That he's thinking about proposing to her. "We haven't even talked about that stuff," Rachel tells her mother.

Communication is key, Nick.

59. Lean on Pete (Andrew Haigh)- I liked the first half and its patient doling out of information. Haigh sews quite a few credible threads to show why the gruff Dell would take a liking to Charley. When the film diverges into a drifter story, I got frustrated with it. To me, drifter characters aren't interesting because they take unpredictable actions, what enliven films, and make them predictable. A dine-and-dash is a dangerous, exciting thing to happen in a movie, but when this scared kid has already done so much similar running, it dulls that edge. This is Haigh's least successful film, but it's still empathetic and sensitive.

58. Hereditary (Ari Aster)- The first third of Hereditary is when it is at its most intimate and compact as a story of grief. And with the bridge of a genuinely shocking event, it becomes less Don’t Look Back and more of a hellish explainer.

Ari Aster is a master craftsman already, investing every element with intention, down to “Why are clocks so present in the frame?” That craft extends to Toni Collette, who is even better than she normally is. But in refusing to be mysterious and small, the film didn't connect with me on a level beyond admiration..

57. Gringo (Nash Edgerton)- The expository information about the company comes too late, the ending is too tidy, and I'm not sure what my girl Mandy Seyfried is doing in this. But it's funny overall, in large part because Theron and Edgerton bounce off each other beautifully, projecting a very specific brand of nouveau riche awful. She says, "Fat people are...hilarious," and he wears too many accessories in his pick-up basketball game, for which there's a running clock.

Many of these crime comedies fail because all of the characters are painted with the same cynical brush, but Oyelowo is so likable here as a frazzled guy in over his head, playing against the type of simmering dignity he inhabited as someone like Martin Luther King. I'm glad that he's getting at-bats with something this different.

56. Bad Times at the El Royale (Drew Goddard)- If you like table-setting (and I do), then this is going to be a fun time. Each room at the motel gets a two-sided mirror, each character is two-faced, many events are presented from two perspectives, and there's even a double in the title. It's hard not to share in Goddard's delight as he patiently lays out all of the Tarantinian pieces.

Once he has to start declaring things though, somewhere halfway in the meandering two and a half hours, the film doesn't end up having much to say. I'm not sure I wanted another Cabin in the Woods ending, but I did want it to add up to more than the modest pleasures that it does. Kudos to Chris Hemsworth and his dialect coach for finally piecing together a serviceable American accent.

55. Thunder Road (Jim Cummings)- As far as calling card movies go, this one is a pretty smart character study. It centers on how the things we find important, the impact of words in this case, can often be the things we struggle with the most, through dyslexia and spoonerisms and messed-up jokes in this case. That being said, no offense, the film would be 25% better with a more capable lead actor. 54. Annihilation (Alex Garland)- Much like Sunshine, another Alex Garland script, this story handles the mystery elegantly, with jolts of real horror, until we get where we're going, which doesn't live up to the promise. I do appreciate that it respects the viewer's intelligence--withholding answers to questions, sometimes never answering questions. I'm grateful that it exists. 53. BlacKkKlansman (Spike Lee)- Like Chi-Raq and Red Hook Summer, BlacKKKlansman would make for a hell of a YouTube compilation if you cut together its best moments. It's sharp and vital when it's at its best, which is pretty much any time it's commenting on the present, through "Now more than ever" Nixon campaign posters, mentions of how David Duke's policies might show up in Republican platforms, or the searing epilogue that brings back one of Lee's oldest tricks.

Like a lot of his recent work though, it's a mess tonally, and basic stuff like the timing of the cuts seems amateurish. I also think Lee's relationship with Terence Blanchard is hurting him at this point; the music doesn't match what's going on at all. I wish it hung together better than it does.

52. Widows (Steve McQueen)- This is the messiest film that Steve McQueen has made, which is its biggest strength and its biggest weakness. That loose quality allows for some expressive moves, such as when the alderman candidate takes a real-time two-minute ride from the poor area where he's campaigning to the tony area where he lives, in the same district. This is a film with admirable ambition to go with its cheap thrills.

But that same messiness produces as many bad performances (Farrell, Neeson, and, yes, Duvall) as it does good ones (Debicki, Henry, Kaluuya), and it elides so many moments near the end that I have lingering questions about whether a major plot point was even resolved. This is definitely the type of movie that has a three-hour cut that is better, and I still hope that director's cut doesn't waste five scenes on Debicki's prostitute relationship with Lukas Haas. (Where is his sliver of a face on the poster?)

51. The Death of Stalin (Armando Iannucci)- I feel as if I have to adjust to the astringency of any Iannucci property, and when I do, I laugh a lot. This movie is hilarious, and I'll save you from a list of the jokes that work the best.

Iannucci and his collaborators take one of the most violent, tyrannical periods of history and expose its perpetrators as sniveling, feckless children who might accidentally spit in their own faces as they're trying to spit on someone else's. Destabilizing those in power--in this case de-memorializing them--and portraying them as lost, scared humans is the goal of satire. So even though he does it so well, part of me wonders, "Is that it?" Bureaucracy is dumb? Isn't this an easy target? For what it's worth, I felt the same way about In the Loop, despite everyone else's praise. I'm waiting for Iannucci to find a weapon sharper than the middle finger.

50. Tully (Jason Reitman)- In a way, it's refreshing for a screenwriter to be bad at writing men. The outdated, clueless, manchild dad is the biggest weakness of the script, especially since everything else is pitched with such realism. There's also one scene that I hate but probably shouldn't spoil.

Put aside that character though, and this is a movie with wit, verisimilitude, and even a bit of visual agility. The protagonist--Marlo, a Diablo Cody name if there ever was one--has a special needs son, and I appreciated the honest way that Marlo's frustration with him sometimes outweighed her understanding.

49. Fahrenheit 11/9 (Michael Moore)- Fahrenheit 11/9 is diffuse, but it's effective enough to be in the top half of Moore's work. He stays out of it mostly (besides that familiar narration, as gentle as it is ashamed), but his heart is clearly in the searing Flint section. In fact, I wish he had made a documentary that focused only on that American travesty, not all of them.

He has the same challenge that many of us do--pointing out the crimes and perversions of Trump while keeping the high ground--and he doesn't always avoid the low-hanging fruit. Dubbing Trump's voice over Hitler's is the type of shit that people hate him for. At most turns, however, Moore's choices make sense. A long diversion into the Parkland kids, even though I find them kind of tiring personally, serves as an inspirational peak to the valley of any people of a generation or two earlier than them.

48. Isle of Dogs (Wes Anderson)- Many Wes Anderson movies are flippant about death and disease. When the effect works, it's refreshing and disorienting. When it doesn't, like in this movie, it feels cold, as if he's moving dolls around in a playhouse.

But in every other way, the sweet and wry Isle of Dogs benefits as a manicured chamber piece. The details are obvious (the tactile fur on all of the dog puppets), less obvious (a translation provides the legend "very sad funeral" to accompany a news story), and even less obvious (more than one joke about how many syllables should be in a haiku). If the narrative--jaded stray finds redemption through guileless child--doesn't offer much in the way of re-invention for the director, then I'm glad the large canvas does.

47. You Were Never Really Here (Lynne Ramsey)- I wanted an artsy crime film, and I got an artsy crime film. I have no idea if I liked it. It's bleak and groady, more of a violence movie than an action movie, concerned with the cycle of abuse and the oily spread of vengeance. It begins twenty minutes after most films of its type might choose to, and it begins in earnest at the hour mark. The atonal Jonny Greenwood score is a perfect approximation of whatever kind of dark clouds are floating in the protagonist's head.

Even when it doesn't work, the film is a reminder that Lynne Ramsey is a real artist. Although this doesn't come close to the catharsis and real-world relevance of We Need to Talk About Kevin, it reveals a focused point of view. Whether it's depicting a sequence through only surveillance footage or cutting to a half-second of flashback, she includes exactly what she wants to.

46. The Commuter (Jaume Collet-Sera)- I gave Non-Stop two-and-a-half stars, and this is a much more elegant version of Non-Stop. Even though it succumbs to gross CGI and outsized conspiracy, the class-conscious table setting is non-pareil, and it lets Neeson act his age.

45. Vice (Adam McKay)- Vice is a difficult film to evaluate because its greatest strength, the resolute, partisan, experimental point of view, is also its greatest weakness, the hand-holding, pedantic, antic point of view. There are moments in this film--the menu scene, the fake-ending--that are more inventive than anything else this year. And credit to McKay for a sui generis structure that covers thirty years in the first hour and two years in the second hour; if nothing else, he has the talent to make unitary executive theory fun.

It's a big, angry, auteurist, '70s swing, so it also takes a lot of chances that don't work and, quite obviously, it wields poetic license in the way that Ron Burgundy swished around a glass of scotch. Sometimes it doesn't know when to trust the viewer, like when it freeze frames and flashes "George H.W. Bush, President, 1989-1993" over a Bush-looking guy talking about "Barbara and I" as his son misbehaves in the background. Through no fault of McKay's, the story feels anti-climactic as well. Although I felt more distance than I expected from events that I consider recent history, the dominoes are still falling in the world that Cheney shaped.

One thing that is less debatable is Christian Bale's transformation into Cheney. That word "transformation" is used any time a famous person wears a wig. This performance, which spans decades and is not directly related to any of Bale's other work, is different. The portrait of Cheney is one of monolithic evil, which Bale suggests, but it's also grounded in reticent, clenched jaw micro-movements. Cheney, who is four inches shorter than Bale, seems like the smallest and biggest man in any room. At this point, if you told me Bale was playing Grendel, I wouldn't bat an eye. In fact, his Grendel might look a lot like Dick Cheney.

Crunchyroll: altre serie si aggiungono al palinsesto invernale della piattaforma

Un’altra stagione ricca di simulcast è alle porte, i primi episodi online già da domani.

Siamo ormai agli inizi della nuova stagione anime e Crunchyroll si affretta ad annunciare quali serie faranno parte del palinsesto invernale. Dopo aver confermato in precedenza l’arrivo di “The Rising of the Shield Hero”, “Girly Air Force”, “The Price of Smiles” e dell’attesa seconda stagione di “Mob Psycho 100″, la piattaforma ha ha annunciato altre sei serie che saranno distribuite, sottotitolate in italiano, in contemporanea con il Giappone. Vediamole in dettaglio.

Boogie Pop and Others

Adattamento completamente nuovo della serie di romanzi mistery, dai connotati sovrannaturali e profondamente psicologici, scritta da Kouhei Kadono ed illustrata da Kouji Ogata. La serie tv sarà diretta da Shingo Natsume (ACCA: L’ispettorato delle 13 province) presso lo studio Madhouse. La sceneggiatura sarà curata da Tomohiro Suzuki (One Punch Man), mentre il character design da Hidehiko Sawada. Lo studio si è già occupato di un primo adattamento ispirato al romanzo, nel 2000 infatti Takashi Watanabe ne diresse una serie anime di 12 episodi, distribuita in Italia da Dynit con il titolo “Bogiepop Phantom”. 

Takeda Keiji stava aspettando la sua fidanzata, Miyashita Touka, a scuola. Ma lei non si è presentata all'appuntamento e non riesce a trovarne traccia. Il sole inizia a tramontare e Takeda decide di rinunciare e di tornare a casa. In quel momento vede un uomo vagare barcollando con le lacrime negli occhi. Takeda e le altre persone capiscono presto che l'uomo non è normale e decidono di ignorarlo, ma una persona si avvicina allo strano individuo. Una figura misteriosa che indossa un mantello e un bizzarro cappello. Questa persona sembra avere lo stesso volto di Miyashita Touka, la fidanzata che ha scaricato Takeda...

WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me

Serie anime basata sul manga comico “Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!” scritto e disegnato da Nanatsu Mukunoki. A dirigere il progetto presso lo studio Doga Kobo (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, New Game!) sarà Daisuke Hiramaki. La sceneggiatura sarà curata da Yuka Yamada (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, My Sweet Tyrant), mentre il character design sarà ad opera di Hiromi Nakagawa.

Miyako è una timida studentessa del liceo ed è anche un'otaku. Un giorno le accade d'incontrare alcuni ragazzini angelici delle elementari! Quando Miyako vede Hana-chan, nuovo amico della sorella minore, il suo cuore non smette di battere! La ragazza tenta di stare con loro, ma con difficoltà... una commedia a sketch su come rimanere accanto alla ragazza super carina sta per iniziare!

Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka

Serie animata tratta dal manga scritto da Makoto Fukami (Psycho-Pass) e disegnato da Seigo Tokiya, che propone una versione più cruda ed action del genere majokko con ragazze armate fino ai denti. A dirigere il progetto presso lo studio LIDENFILMS sarà Hideyo Yamamoto (Code:Realize, Strike the Blood). Il character design sarà adattato da Yoko Suzuki e la sceneggiatura sarà curata da Makoto Fukami e Norimitsu Kaihou (School-Live!, Danganronpa 3).

Leggende, miti e magia... l'umanità ha finalmente la possibilità di incontrare un mondo che è stato dimenticato per via dello sviluppo scientifico. Comunque questa riunione non è delle più felici. Dei mostri invadono la terra dal mondo dei morti rendendo inutili le armi moderne e lasciando incerto il destino dell'umanità. Ma grazie all'Otherworld Trade Agreement, l'umanità ha la possibilità di uscire dal baratro dell'estinzione grazie alle ragazze magiche. Queste eroine, che hanno ottenuto poteri magici immensi, conducono finalmente gli umani alla vittoria malgrado tutte le ferite fisiche ed emotive che provoca loro farlo. Kemono Friends 2

Seconda stagione della popolare serie che, a seguito delle controversie nate dall’estromissione del regista Tatsuki (Impegnato su “Kemurikusa” questo inverno), sarà diretta da Ryuuichi Kimura (Aikatsu!) presso lo studio Tomason.

Al Japari Park, un enorme zoo da qualche parte nel mondo, un misterioso fenomeno ha dato un'apparenza umanoide agli animali. Nella nuova forma sono conosciuti come "Amici" e vivono insieme in armonia nel parco. Un giorno gli Amici Serval e Caracal incontrano un bambino umano nella foresta. Invitano così il piccolo affamato ad unirsi a loro in viaggio e vanno a cercare molti nuovi Amici, cibi deliziosi e i segreti del parco. Affrontano anche una brutta situazione che scuote la terra sotto i loro piedi! Una storia nuova sul Japari Park sta iniziando!

Meiji Tokyo Renka

Serie ispirata all’omonima visual novel sentimentale di genere otome pubblicata da Broccoli. Il progetto sarà diretto da Akitarou Daichi (Kamisama Kiss, Ninja Girl & Samurai Master) presso lo studio TMS Entertainment. A supervisionare la sceneggiatura e il comparto animazioni sarà invece Junko Yamanaka (Kamisama Kiss, Ninja Girl & Samurai Master).

Un mondo misterioso ti chiama... Questa notte è immersa in una luce lunare cremisi. In una notte di luna piena rossa, la liceale Ayazuki Mei è stata attirata dalla magia del misterioso mago Charlie ed è entrata in una scatola. Quando si è svegliata si è trovata a Tokyo nell'era Meiji! Mei, persa e confusa, è aiutata da Mori Ougai e Hishida Syunso che la conducono nella propria carrozza indirizzata verso Rokumeikan, una sontuosa sala da ballo gremita di potenti ufficiali. In questo luogo incontra personaggi storici come Izumi Kyoka, Kawakami Otojiro, Koizumi Yakumo e Fujita Goro. In questo mondo, durante la "Misty Hour" tra tramonto e alba compaiono i "mononoke". Chi può vederli è chiamato "Tamayori" e Mei è una di loro. Mentre vive un'esistenza non a lei familiare i senDatanti sbocciano tra lei e queste persone e il potere dei tamayori può solo fortificare questi legami. La sua possibilità di tornare al proprio mondo  giungerà con la luna piena del mese successivo. Sceglierà la vita moderna o... ? Nella fantastica era Meiji di Tokyo, una storia d'amore attraverso il tempo sta sbocciando.

Katana Friends ~ Mini Toji

Serie animata che porterà di nuovo sullo schermo le protagoniste di “Katana Maidens ~ Toji No Miko” (che trovate sempre sottotitolata in italiano sulla piattaforma) e del videogioco “Toji no Miko: Kizamishi Issen no Tomoshibi”, in una simpatica versione ristretta.  La serie sarà diretta da Yuu Nobuta (High School Fleet, Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai), presso lo studio project No.9 (Angel's 3Piece, Ryuuou no Oshigoto!). La sceneggiatura sarà curata da Aoi Akashiro(Classroom of the Elite, Killing Bites) e il character design sarà ad opera diHiromi Ogata (Magic Kaito 1412), che supervisionerà anche il comparto animazioni.

La vita quotidiana delle ragazze include combattere e non combattere? Tutti i personaggi della serie animata "Katana Maidens" e del gioco per cellulare "Katana Maidens Kizamishi Issen no Tomoshibi" si uniscono in versione mini!
