phee’s character in the present is just so confusing

we saw that he clearly feels something for jin, pretty much moved on from non, and isn’t that involved in tan’s plan (just went to fuck jin and didnt get any info like he was supposed to) and even seems to want to spill at least some part of the truth to jin

but despite everything that just happened in the house, he isn’t against tan either. he’s unpredictable, just standing here in the middle, not taking any part in the chaos that is unfolding.

in a way that behavior kinda reminds of fluke’s, seeing everything that unfolds but not taking any side

after watching ep9 i was mad, like damn phee how could you? we all believed in you but you just went ahead and fucked one of the dudes that made your bf’s life miserable and eventually led to his disappearance, have you got no shame? i mean i was pretty on board with all the ‘phee and tan are the masterminds, they’re the ones behind the masks, they’re here to take revenge for non and kill everyone’ theories so obviously i was a bit disappointed…

but still, phee didn’t really take any side (yet).

tan told him he planned on drugging everyone in that house and he clearly didn’t look in his right mind in that moment. then por was impaled on a branch. all of them started having hallucinations. fluke got a gun and is waving it at everyone. top clearly looked possessed and is becoming violent. now fluke almost shot someone and has white at gunpoint.

all of that was caused by tan’s drugs. (except the 9th person and the uncle that got decapitated but that’s for another time)

mixing hallucinations with a gun, a knife, deep-buried secrets and fear is not a good recipe. one of them already died and that’s only adding to the chaos.

once again, all of that was caused by tan’s drugs, in a butterfly effect kinda way.

phee knows that. tan was only planning to use them to get the group to confess everything under the influence and finally get answers. or was he…?

whatever phee thinks of tan and of his plan, everything snowballed and led them here. but tan is still the reason things are the way they are. but phee didn’t confront him. didn’t reveal to everyone his real identity and intentions. no, he’s just watching from afar. he didn’t intervene, didn’t add to the chaos, yet didn’t do anything to keep things under control or do damage control…

he didn’t use the antidote.

i thought he dropped off tan’s plan as he got too attached to jin and kinda forgot abt why he was here in the first place, but maybe everything’s that’s unfolding put him back on the right path?

his non-action is an action in itself.

even tho he maybe believed the drug wouldn’t be that hard, he could’ve stepped in so things wouldn’t worsen a thousand times. he could’ve given them the antidote a thousand times for fuck’s sake! he could’ve revealed everything to them a million times too.

later on he will have to pick a side, tan’s (aka non’s) or the others’ (aka jin’s). that’s kinda ironic that it means he’ll have to choose between his 2 bfs (maybe this is all a love triangle after all *gunshots*)

on a legal pov, he would technically be responsible for por’s death and the ones that will follow right? maybe not on the same level as tan or as whoever will pull the trigger/stab one of them but the drugs are the main reason they’re acting like that and he knew abt them and did nothing, so he’s technically guilty too right?

why would he decide to do nothing and just watch the chaos unfold if he didn’t enjoy what’s happening or think they deserve it at least a little bit?

what will he do? who will he choose? be wise, phee, i’ve got my eye on you.

obviously all this theory could be proven wrong in the matter of seconds in ep10 if he decides to spill everything to jin (which id be VERY pissed abt, the d cannot be that good?!??)

[guy who has said that i'm glad i watched this live every week voice] i'm rly glad i watched this live, but this time its bc. i think there is something so truly and genuinely special abt the way that the theories abt bravern himself evolved week to week.........like at first everyone was like Well maybe he's an evil alien who is gonna Kill isami. and then everyone was like Well maybe he's a death drive and isami is his lulu. and THEN everyone was like Well there's still some knuth in there so. but none of that was the case!!! none of that was true!!! it was literally just this one guy and all of the love he has and Absolutely Sucks Shit at expressing!!!!!!! and i just. idk. that hits me rly hard that maybe it was percieved as sinister at first just cause it was a little Off but in the end it was something really really sweet :] it also just feels like yet another way of the show doing its "we know audiences aren't willing to accept optimism at face value these days" schtick like they mentioned in that one interview and just. showing how bravern himself evolves in the eyes of the viewer. it's rly special to me :]

i know bravern speaking german in ep2 was a nod to the translator he uses on superbia later but. what if someone loved you so much they became german (if i ever mention kyouji again in a bravern context just fucking shoot me)

WILD to watch the finale and then see the isami hate train take off FKSJDHFJ cause i feel like i adored him so much in that ep LMAO. my guy really felt every emotion known to man in the span of 22 minutes and then started makin gup new ones. he's very human!!! and i love that abt him!!!!

although some takes. i'm ngl. i know we joke abt subtext and cowards but it becomes less funny when the subtext that is there is missed LMAO

sorry to keep bringing up ep4 but i think its SO interesting how like. the way that bravern seems to helps isami out emotionally in that ep actually ends up not helping him in the long run aswell? like getting to know all those ppl care abt him is good ofc but it also feeds Directly into his hangups in ep5. and i remember being a little confused as to Why that was the case on first watch cause ep4 was So abt his beef w lulu (FLSDKJFH) but w the smith being a human again thing in the end it makes. so much more sense!!!!! i can't wait to rewatch the show w it still fresh in my mind and find even more!!!!!!

and omg the beef with lulu. literally nothing is funnier to me than "we are gonna have one Rival Fight in this show and that position is gonna be filled by isami and smith's fucking KID" SOBS. LIKE. it kills me FKSLDJFHL. though i will say again that i think it is So fucking special that in ep10 lulu specifically calls out isami taking care of her after smith dies and it apparently happens to such a degree that like. he is worth her time traveling back to save independently aswell? even though there was no way that he "took care of her" for more than a couple days? which i think just says so much abt isami in the sense that like. at no point before ep6-7ish in his arc would he have even entertained that idea. uwu

i think i said this before but ikd if i included the screenshot but. the fact that while bravern is dying he sees THAT SAME FUCKING PICTURE is just evidence that men do not take enough photos i think

there is literally Nothing more onbrand for bravern than the fucking. "ep13 abema listing" (if anyone who has not heard abt that sees this. it was just a rebroadcast of ep12 mislabeled) sending everyone into a tizzy regarding like. Secret Episode Question Mark except half of everyone being convinced its an april fools joke and the other half being convinced that the april fools joke is that we didn't expect it. and then it turns out to not be interntional atall and the real april fools joke is Fry Pan. that might have been my favorite episode this chapter, by far. that was a fucking rollercoaster.

for starters, i was literally screaming in a VC with one of my other friends because of arturo's secret reveal. i really want to know the story behind his younger sister commiting suicide because of him, because i refuse to believe that it was out of malice. though, he did have quite the extreme reaction, because hell, he had a scalpel at eden's throat when she mentioned the secret to him, so it must have pissed him right off that they're already assuming that his motives or reasons were malicious. terrifying stuff. either way, he's starting to grow on me.

also, new arturo sprites and a cg with him! yippee! love how they look so far :)

second, love how arei beat that toothpaste tube twink-looking ass to the ground. first time i've ever seen her that defensive. ever. you could probably hear me laughing at that from across a mansion.

AREI AND EDEN'S INTERACTION! they were being quite fruity but i genuinely loved it. seeing that side of arei actually opening up to eden... it was a sight to see. might i start shipping them? who the hell knows. either way, it was wholesome as fuck.

there are good werewolves good vampires… not all monsters are monster. i hope there are more good monsters. sam really! i know what dean did was selfish but he just wanted his brother. I think this is such a small thing compared to what Sam did. Sam trusted a demon instead of his brother, and Dean forgave him anyway and started trusting him again.

sometimes dean didnt trust sam either but they were always brothers. The person Dean cares about most in this world is his little brother Sammy. And Sam took it away from him. I'm sorry I loved Sam I still do BUT if someone acts against my favorite character I will defend my favorite character and I guess I'm a little harsh on Sam right now but I can't help it. dean is the big brother, Dean always looked out for Sam. sam and dean they have different point of views. sam didnt even try to save dean from purgatory. and dean did everything for him. i knew when they argued dean would save sam every time but in the same situation sam wouldnt save dean. when sam said he didnt even tried to save dean from the purgatory i thought something happened. and i still cant believe he didnt even tried. and he had no reason not to. like dean didnt even died he was in purgatory with the monsters. why didnt he try to save him? and i know dean's choice was selfish yes he didnt wanted to be alone. dean had a duty of care since he was little and he'll always try to save his little brother. but sam idek. Even Bobby was disappointed. Yes Winchesters had a deal but they never listened to this deal until Sam broke it. idk im just sad that it came to this.

Crowley is still a little bit human. his sons reactions and interrogation were funny. what is cas doing? crowle is funny. I'm just starting to love him again but he ruins everything. and dean he enjoys using the blade i know he cant help it but still he enjoys violence. is abaddon really dead? i think so but i cant be sure.

Cas is getting good at lying. spears and aguilera!? dean doesnt trust cas and sam. and he is under the influence of the knife. I have no idea what he will do while under the influence of the knife. and that scares me. i knew he wouldnt leave the blade. gadreel is right. everyone makes mistakes. and again dean… i knew he would attack he shook his hand. If he wasn't going to attack, he probably wouldn't have shaken hands. he is out of control. He can't even control himself.

I started watching supernatural about a month ago. At first carry on didn't mean anything to me, but now I listen to it completely differently. I even made it my phone's ringtone. I get emotional when Carry On is played at the beginning of the episode. Dean, Sam, Cas and the others are my everything even though I have only known them for a month. It's like I've known them my whole life. I love them very much and I'm glad I started following their adventures. i love them so much. but especially dean, im sorry but i have to say it he is my everything i love him so much. i love sam and cas too and bobby but dean is different. haven't we seen this before? Or am I experiencing deja vu? metatron saving the woman. idk it feels so familiar. I love Cas' references. Metatron is really getting on my nerves. gadreel was a good angel. really cas did all of this for dean. i am not sad they won. yes dean is dead but i know he wont be dead for long so no problem i guess. sam IS trying to bring his brother back. he said he wouldnt but he is trying it is nice to see he tries. i knew we would see demon dean in the future because i saw spoilers about it. but i didnt think we would see now! well, at least he is not really dead. hope he'll be okay. things will never be great even good but at least i hope it wouldnt be bad.

I'm going to say things bc that's how I cope.

As a person who thinks that if you're going to do something you should do it right, I can't help it, it bothered me how sloppy this season felt. Of course I fully blame HBO and their cheapness, but it stills bothers me. Not only we got two episodes less than s1, but the 8 we got were shorter, and you can tell. I also blame the budget cuts for the constant yet unnecessary flashbacks, and the weird editing, and the anticlimatic pace. In any case, I want to highlight the things I did like, because I fucking love this show and Im sure that after a rewatch or two I'll be less angry, so let's stay positive:

Since it seems they were having trouble to get the complete cast together in one plot, I do love they kinda let them have their spotlight one by one. Like, Frenchie in the first episodes, Wee John as Calypso, Lucius with his PTSD in ep5... It's not the same as s1, but it's something.

I've seen people complaining about this, but Im happy they didnt invest too much time on the forgiving process. I like it better when everyone gets along fine, and in the end they're pirates and they never seemed to be the kind of people who hold grudges, so yeah lets skip to the nice part.

I did like a lot what they did with Izzy. I don't care if it happened too quick or what, I used to feel indiference towards him and this season I actually enjoy his scenes a lot. I still dont know how I feel about his death tho. It bothered me a little that the whole scene was more about Ed than Izzy himself, but in the end I always saw Izzy as a narrative tool in Ed's arc more than as a character of his own, so I guess it makes sense.

Super happy with the music choices, and also the new outfits.

Really, the first five episodes were absolutely brilliant.

It made me so happy they got Bronson Pinchot as Ned Low.

Huge fan of Zheng Yi Sao and Auntie.

Im so fucking furious at Taika Waititi for his pro-Israel shit that seeing Pop Pop attacking him gave me some sort of inner peace.

Now, things I wished had been done differently: - There were a lot of paralelisms with s1, which is good, but I'd like they brought back more actual elements of s1 into play. Like, the lighthouse painting, the secret wardrobe, the pink robe, a third Badmington (he would have work better as big bad than this prince ricky guy I dont really care about?). Frenchie singing again. This oneis a reach, but I would love to have Mary Bonnet back. And I was really hoping they play with the fact that Stede is "dead". The guy doesnt even mention the Master Fuckery from ep10.

-On that note, I was a little dissapointed on Jim's arc. I was never that invested on them or their plot in s1, but it feels weird how this season it seems like none of that even happened. Even Jim felt like a different character. I feel it would worked better if some of the conflict was related to Siete Gallos stuff, so at least it would feel all of that subplot wasnt a waste of time.

-Little missing opportunities of making me happy: Anne Bonny and Mary Read mentioning Jack (to insult him, mostly); they kissing when the house is on fire; Ed finding not just one letter but the whole pile of them; a better narrative use for Seagull Buttons (well, any narrative use, really); developing the bombclocks thing in a way where Auntie was not deprived of her superhuman detective skills; having Ned Low as bigger villain, with several appearances.

-The general development of Ed/Stede in the final episode... It's just confusing to me. My reading of Stede's mind state was that he was on autopilot since he killed Ned Low, and being abandoned by Ed and having his ass kicked by Zheng would wake him up a little, but this episode he's still in PROBLEM SOLVER mode, zero regrets about anything, still hasn't talked anything through EVER, he's just fine. With Ed I dont even ask for coherence bc he's always been a wtf guy, but I dont understand the "just do whatever you're good at" thing in the beginning of the episode, and he claiming back his leathers and his pirate-self and going on berserker mode and fighting along Stede as equals and blablabla if at the end he's still chosing to be a fucking innkeeper. Also, having a shitty inn in the middle of nowhere sounds too close to the antique shop in ep4, didn't they learn ANYTHING from Mary and Anne? I mean, the innkeeping was a predictible outcome, but the setting up of the episode was really aiming to the opposite, so it feels weird to me. In any case, I'm happy they're together and if being absolutely on their own in the loneliest house in the world doesn't get them to improve their communication, idk what else they could do.

-Still think they should have been lighthouse keepers instead.

-Next season Im totally muting every OFMD tag as soon as they announce the trailer release, because the promo and bts content was absolutely TOO MUCH. Those fuckers had been showing us stuff from the very climax of the fucking last episode since weeks before the season aired. I get it's a me problem, but I do believe it ruined my experience a lot, so fuck that.

And well. That's it. Good season, could have been great. Im happy but sad. Let's just hope that, if there's a season 3, they gave them more money and time to do it properly.

And before I post this and run away from tumblr, Im checking out how much of my wishlist had been fulfilled: - LUCIUS IS ALIVE - Stede Bonnet, berserker era [Not as I imagined, but hey] - The Queen Anne’s Revenge, either being captured or coming back as the ship Ed left behind when he went to The Revenge - The Blockade of Charleston (and make really absurd) [Still might happen in the future?] - Anne Bonny and Mary Read(as middle aged women who kinda mirror Ed and Stede, but they did it right) - Since he was already mentioned in s1, it would make sense introducing Hornigold, maybe as a new antagonist or something. - A rip off of that wwdits episode with the Vampire Council, except this time is the Pirate Council and its members are pirates from other movies and shows [I was really dreaming big here] - On that note, a really weird episode with every person who has played Blackbeard in recent years [Fully tripping] - More women and more asian characters. And more people speaking their mother tongues [So many Chinese gals, not one chinese word :(] - Ed finding out about Stede’s death and believing it [It did happened but not how/when we thought] - Ed meeting Mary and getting along [Never losing hope on this one] - Frenchie adopting a cat (and singing a song about it). - More info about everyone’s pasts. - I would LOVE having Bartholomew Roberts in the show. [YES PLEASE]

I TRUSTED THEM TO DO RIGHT BY JINGI AND THEY SO FUCKING DID THAT LORE WAS DELICIOUS not surprising BUT DELICIOUS

this whole time i had faith that he wasn't just an alcoholic shithead for no reason there had to be some lore that drove him to drink and there is!! in fact!!!

i don't actually buy that he lived so carelessly just because he knew he was going to have to die young, i feel like maybe that was part of it but also part of it (imo) was that he wanted to be a disappointment that no one would truly love and care about so that no one would miss him when he was gone

(but of course people still cared about him and loved him jingi you fool)

fucking losing my mind at the fact that jingi thought of the secret he shared with master-father as a treasure but it being the thing that ultimately leads to his obligation to die for yukito (and the islands)

and honestly incensed at master-father for confiding in him about that in the first place, like yeah i do think he had no choice but good fucking lord the burden that that put on jingi was immense

like he was the only one who knew the secret that allowed him to piece together what he needed to do, he couldn't ever tell anyone and obviously couldn't foist that burden off on someone else. he obviously knew haruaki or aka would've died in his stead if they knew, so not only did he have to live knowing what he would one day have to do, he had to live with that knowledge alone

anyway with two eps left i feel like it's not inconceivable that they'll bring him back but i do think it's unlikely (when he fucked off last ep and just disappeared i was fully prepared for him to die, there is no trust between me and gohands after the mikoto situation)

but this was just overall such a satisfying episode and such a satisfying culmination of jingi's arc imo

also like I know I'm coming to this ship in the weirdest way possible (reading fic of a different ship > watching episode 10 > reading fic of this ship > watching episode 41 > actually watching the damn show in order) so that's probably skewing my perspective a lot but still!

the subtextual world/relationship-building in Meng Yao's first and second appearances is so good. like in his first appearance he is almost 100% just shy guy in the background, it's literally just him there as a servant to Nie Huaisang, pretending he doesn't hear people gossipping about himself, everyone in the room knowing he should/could be inhabiting a completely decent role, looking to Lan Xichen as pretty much a savior. I'm pretty sure we don't even get like a secret glare from him in that ep?

that is a DIFFERENT GUY than the Meng Yao who shows up in ep10 with Nie guards at his back, inviting people back to Qinghe on borrowed authority. like yeah the captain knocks him down, but he's comfortable and confident interacting with Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen and WWX/LWJ/JC, he waves the gate open, he makes his persuasive lil speech. the competency just jumps right out. basically the only "narration" we get is the Greek chorus moment when he's arguing against Xue Yang's execution, but the still manage to build in a backstory that makes his exile feel like a real, heartbreaking an end to a storyline, even though the end is all the audience sees!

also not for nothing but I do love that the closest we get to Competent/Confident Meng Yao in his first appearance is the moment when the Wen are making their threats and he shoves Nie Huaisang behind him despite being very unarmed himself (? he's one of the only people in that scene who doesn't draw a sword, at least), and then in his second appearance there he goes again, jumping in front of Nie Mingjue.

I mean fuuuuck, one of the first things we learn about Meng Yao is "that boy would die for the Nies" and then................ yea

a few months ago, right when polls were first introduced, I voted in a "most divorced couples of all time" poll where NieYao was an option--except I hadn't watched The Untamed yet, so I voted for one of the other ships and I am so deeply regretting it because GOD. most divorced couple of ALL TIME.

KinnPorsche Ep09 Lines of Power, PART 2

Continuing from PART 1.

FIRST SHOT: In Part 1, I mentioned the importance of lighting. Well, it's still important for Part 2.

This entire scene is powerfully lit in Porsche's character color: blue blue blue. Vegas has stepped into Porsche's territory. The lines of the pool also point toward Porsche.

Porsche's face is lined with blue light, but even more than that, he's backlit so we can only just barely see his expressions. Meanwhile, Vegas in this scene has his face well lit, and his expressions are exposed (not shown).

Go back and rewatch this scene. Porsche barely says anything. He's holding his cards really fucking close to his chest here.

SECOND SHOT: Kinn, honey, you're lurking. Notice the 2/3rds split of the screen, with Kinn on the dark 2/3rds. He's practically a shadow. It's simple, but I like the uneven split.

THIRD SHOT: Vegas is framed by the vertical pool lines, but look at Porsche. Porsche is actively leaning out of that frame. Porsche's shoulder and head are escaping and essentially wrecking the picture that Vegas is trying to create. That's some pretty clear body language.

For just a heartbeat in this scene, Kinn looks in a direction that allows him to meet eyes with the audience through the mirror.

I was able to catch this mainly because my bestie @moerusai had already pointed out the amazing way Kinn breaks the fourth wall near the end of the episode. (Go read that. Go read it right now.)

I consider this moment a hint, a little foreshadow, of that bigger and more important moment later on. Here in this scene, what I see is Kinn asking the audience, "can you believe the way this bitch is wasting my precious time?" 😂

Kinn, I know you have better things to do. Namely, Porsche.

NOT the same shot as my previous one — the big difference is the characters' gazes. To us, it looks like Mirror Kinn and Tawan are meeting gazes, but in real life they wouldn't be able to meet eyes like this. In effect, it looks like there would be two Kinns, the mirror Kinn as well as the real Kinn, and both would be staring at Tawan so damn hard.

Tawan. Kinn is watching you from all angles. And he's not pleased with what he's seeing. (And neither is the audience, you shifty little bastard.)

Split screen, and yet both sides of the split look pretty dark to me. Dramatic lighting looks cool. Man with a resting bastard face does NOT look cool.

Best move on before I burst a blood vessel.

This is a really good frame job.

I try not to dig too much into colors, but this shot is startling monochromatic (even Ken falling into monochrome?!), except for Porsche's face. His pleading face. Oh my heart. Porsche, I promise it's gonna be okay, but maybe not right away.

Porsche's colorful face being centered in those vertical black lines surrounded with gray boxes makes this such a powerful shot.

I literally cheered for Porchay when he confessed his crush, but I did not except Kim to pull the perfect kiss on the cheek. Hello? What? This episode dashes my heart and then fills it full to overflowing?

Meanwhile, the audience is looking at them from the sound booth, giving this moment a bit of of a voyeuristic flavor, while also making it feel a bit like sitting in a movie theatre and watching a screen.

BUT. One more thing. Check out the brand on the sound booth. It's blurry, but I zoomed in and was juuuuust able to make out the words.

I don't know anything about sound equipment, but I do know how to google a brand, and the brand is...

...are you fucking kidding me?

Duality delta? DUALITY? In a show that's all about dual natures and keeping secrets?

Emperor Korn is holding court again. I love that no matter how they set it up, he gets the emperor positioning, this time by giving him the entire wide couch to himself.

And yes, hello chess metaphor, I see you're back again! Interesting that the chess board positioned for Korn to engage an invisible opponent, but Kinn and Tankhun are NOT positioned to play against him.

X marks the Kinn.

Those Xs in the background are pretty dramatic. To me they're saying that Kinn has to be careful because he's in a precarious position. Just about any move he could make might end up being the wrong one, with disastrous consequences. He needs to tread very, very carefully right now.
