ran is not afraid of the eternal fire or its bitter tales; he'd chosen to walk izana's bloody path knowing its abrupt stop would be the edge of a precipice on the cliff of corpses izana will build his empire out of, and the only one who's ever been able to anchor him down to earth has always been kakucho, try as the rest of them might. for this, it never stops being surprising when izana chooses him to lean on instead, be it his body or his mind. ran does not startle when feeling the extra weight against him, but like a light switch obscuring the room, he stops focusing on the blinking neon lights above their heads and his whole world narrows down to the warmth on his side.

somewhere along the way of the years they've spent together, ran had learned to read izana's cues and respond to them without the need of words; izana did not need to say anything for ran to guide him outside, easily blocking out the rest of the world with a firm click of the limousine's door shutting behind him.

ran should feel powerful. he could pay trust with the slide of a blade against an exposed throat, count on the alcohol to slow instincts downㅤ───ㅤbut maybe asking him such an intimate question held the same weight, and he did not expect izana to bare his neck to the knife of his words.

he threads his fingers through izana's hair gently as he listens to him, silvery as the moonlight that cannot seep through the rolled up windows, like strands of silk scattered on his thighs. he wonders if his mother had held him like this once upon a time, soothing his troubles away with a hug, or if his father had picked him up on his shoulders to get a better view of summer festivals. he doesn't know. there is much he still doesn't know about izana, and he had been content to leave it as that, at the start. things weren't so simple anymore. or maybe they never were, and he'd been a fool to think even he would be unmoved.

───ㅤran gives a soft sigh, and with it, a confession. honesty for honesty, an open-wounded heart for the violent hands that choose to craddle it instead: ㅤㅤ‘ㅤi regret it too, sometimes. i've never had anyone else but rindou. i didn't want to. i admired you and kakucho precisely because i saw us in you two... but i suppose just admiration doesn't cut it anymore, huh? i care about you. as does rindou. as does mucho, and shion, and mocchi.ㅤ’ㅤㅤ

he chuckles, half resigned, half wary as he shakes his head. these are new waters to him as well, as daunting as the cracking ice of a mid-winter lake... but he wants to take the step. he feels that if he doesn't, he'd drown not in its waters, but in the cutting wind of all things left unsaid.

ㅤㅤㅤ‘ㅤyou are...ㅤ’ㅤㅤ──a dream in plain daylight, a forebonding omen, a realization that his heart can drum at the beat of someone else's rhythm──ㅤㅤ‘ㅤthe only person i've ever wanted to follow in my life. before you... it had all been so awfully monotonous, you know? taking control of roppongi was expected. whatever came after was to be expected, too. having you in my life didn't just make me happy. you gave me something to look forward to for the first time in a long time ─ and it's been a lot of fun. i'm afraid it means more to me than you realize... that's why i don't regret it most of the time. i'm glad for it. i'm glad it's you. ㅤ’

he can't help but laugh again, raspy against his throat, low in the quiet confidentiality of their shared moment. no one else can hear them, but his voice remains barely above a whisper, smile fond as he looks down at izana.

neither ran haitani or izana kurokawa were a synonym of happiness. they cannot drive monsters away when they are the monsters people flee fromㅤ───ㅤbut somehow, they had found each other in the midst of a starless night, and izana had become the moon to light a bright new path for ran to take. that in itself was a type of happiness for people like them, and that was enough.

ran instinctively interlaces their pinkies like they were thirteen again, a muscle memory of more innocent times, tying down his words into a tangible promise.

It would be hard for most people to realize that Izana's gone past his limits with alcohol. It isn't a new thing, but it also isn't something that is common either. Normally he drinks just enough to relax and escape his head. Tonight he's gone well past that though his steady gaze doesn't show the typical signs of drunkenness. But he needs out, it's too loud and crowded and the fun from the first hour is replaced by misery. He turns and there's a subtle wobble, quickly fixed but evidently not quick enough when a familiar presence manifests by his side. His head pounds as he leans against Ran and he makes his intentions clear. Outside. At least for a bit. Sometimes he leaves when he takes these breaks, sometimes he goes back. He's a stubborn king who yields to no one but himself and even that is debatable at times.

The night air is welcoming against his flushed skin but the idea of being in the open makes his skin crawl. It doesn't matter when there's the luxury car they arrived in - but Izana kicks the driver out with an order to come back in an hour and promptly crawls into the back of the limo where its blissfully quiet and the leather is cool. He beckons Ran to sit and then decides to drop his head onto his lap. The rest of the world is kicked out and rejected - but the king allows one of his to remain. If Rindou was present, he would have him too. But he'd been busy with the music last that Izana could recall in his foggy memory. His eyes slip close - and then the question.

Wisteria eyes open, staring sideways at the other side of the car while the question sinks in with a heavy weight. He rolls onto his back instead, white locks splayed across the black fabric of Ran's outfit while he stares up at the oldest of the Haitani brothers. Does he regret it?

" Sometimes. " Izana finally answers, very quiet despite the silence the car offers them and knowledge they cannot be heard from outside the car. Rubatosis overtakes him as he stares at Ran. He does not owe any further explanation. He didn't even owe an answer. But alcohol has loosened his lips and truth he'd otherwise keep buried under the floorboards of his heart has now been shared. " I don't. But sometimes I do. I don't want you to leave. Or Rindou. Or Kakucho. Or Mucho, or Mocchi, or even Shion. " He laughs, pained and raw like a dying animal when the ugly admission comes clawing past his teeth like a traitor. He can hear his own breath shaking and his head falls to the side, cheek pressed to Ran's thigh.

" I don't think I could handle it. That scares me. " Izana whispers, and he can feel the frantic pace his heart races to at the thought. Can Ran feel it? How it jumps? " I said I'd never let anyone hurt me like the incident that led to what I did to end up in juvie. " He has never spoken of it, not even to those closest to him. " That might. I regret it at times for that reason. " It is what had also given life to the idea that if nothing else, he could always rule through fear to ensure obedience. As long as they listened...as long as they didn't abandon him...

Izana's head turns back towards Ran, lips parted slightly. " Not always though. " Izana doesn't remember the name for the feeling that claws at him with a demand to make this, too, known. Once he'd known it more, but it had been strangled in the night like his old self, yet now it rises from its grave in his chest. " You make me happy. " And it feels like a self-inflicted murder to say the words, because one part of him loathes the admission and the other demands to say before he forgets again. " Warm. When we're all together. " He blinks, frowns as though something has upset him, and then speaks again. " But also just you. As Ran Haitani. I think sometimes you know me more than I know me. You keep the abyss away even without knowing it. "

Izana reaches a hand out for one of Ran's, fingers graceful even when slowed by the alcohol, and then links their pinkies together like that childish promise in juvie before Tenjiku had formed. He stares for a long minute, not saying anything more but just lingering like that before looking up to Ran's face to see his reaction. " Can we just stay here a bit more? " And even drunk, Izana knows his word is law - but he also does not intend to force Ran to stay here where it feels like layers of him are being peeled away if he'd prefer the fun of the party inside.

Only Friends: What Led to Ray's Explosive Tirade (Playing 'The Bad Guy')

I have to admit that this was not how I expected this scene to play out. I was just as flabbergasted as everyone else at first. However I think there's one clear thing that Ray's outburst reminded me off: no matter whether you reveal the truth or keep it to yourself - either way, you are the bad guy.

I'm NOT the Villain

As Boston very derisively claims, if Ray reveals the truth of the affair, he'll be the one unleashing the damage. A similar parallel to what Boston did last episode (with very different intentions may I add, but damage is damage nonetheless).

Mew is incredibly important to Ray. If we talk simply outside of Ray's love for him, Ray wants to treat him well, repay him for his kindness and support over the years. Therefore, once Ray was in possession of this information, he felt very strongly that Mew needed to know. He knew telling Mew was the right thing to do. He does genuinely care about Mew as a person.

Does he warn Mew and ruin his present happiness (which is based on a lie)? Or does he hold his tongue and potentially watch his friend get hurt from other mistreatments by Top further down the line?

Ray doesn't want to hurt Mew in any way. He doesn't want to be the bringer of bad news. Why should it have to fall to him to reveal this awful act of betrayal to someone he cares for so much? And when Mew supposedly doesn't react in the way he expects to this information, Ray goes ballistic with frustration, concern and anger. Why is he the bad guy for trying to help his friend, when Top can seemingly get away with it, and be in everyone's good graces even when he's completely undeserving? Why can no one else see Top's true colours?

I'm NOT the Worst

Something else that occurred to me throughout this episode, is how often Ray's friends belittle and overlook him. And it's so routine they hardly even notice.

Boston has never tried to hide his snide little back-handed comments at Ray. Since their fight at Sand's, he's become even more callous when throwing quips in plain sight. Namcheum makes an observation about all of them being partnered up, and it's only after a few beats that April points out Ray is still single. It's as if they forgot he was even there. Namcheum doesn't tend to pick up on any of the animosity or tension within this group. She's generally not the most tactful or best at reading people.

Then when Ray speaks to Mew in the bathroom, Mew immediately assumes Ray's been taking drugs. Ray looks clearly stunned by this. Yes, he's always coined as the 'drunk' but that's not his one and only personality trait. That's not all he does and is as a person.

It dawns on Ray that even his closest friends seem to always assume the very worst of him. He had a bad feeling about Top from the offset but no one cared or listened. Rather, Ray never gets given the benefit of the doubt, when he's not committed anything as problematic as the heinous crimes amongst their group. Particularly when compared to Top, someone who gets all the praise and adoration when Ray knows he's a certified piece of shit, is desperately unfair. And most of all Top gets the respect of the best friend he loves.

I think what really sent the situation hurtling south was Ray watching everyone play happy families, when he knows there is a web of dishonesty and resentment lurking beneath. It's all a farce. And Ray couldn't stomach it for another moment longer. He had enough.

Become the Very Thing You Loathe

In Episode 4, Ray displays a classic example of self-loathing and self punishment when he goads Sand to scold him. In doing so, it's as if he's deriving some warped form of satisfaction in owning these criticisms. Because he's told these things so often, he starts to believe it, so why not own it too? I actually mentioned this in my Episode 1 meta (regarding Ray's self-actualisation of becoming a burden). Sometimes embracing the very thing you hate being know for, at least validates the presence of that criticism. 'If people keep calling me an asshole, then fine, I'll become an asshole. At least then being called an asshole makes sense.'

So Ray brought it on himself to air out everyone's dirty laundry. 'Fuck it, if you really all think I'm the worst, then fine, I'll do what needs to be done, I'll be the worst. You all happy now?'

Even though Ray adopts the persona forced onto him, he's not happy about it at all. He wants to be identified with more substance, with more credit, as more than just what everyone claims him to be.

*Cracks knuckles* Anon, first of all, thank you for asking. In this dissertation, I’ll unravel all the moments Ray made me pause for a second or ten because he looked absolutely out of this world hot/seductive/enchanting/surreal. For the purposes of this, I’ll try not to overlap my Ray’s greatest hits with Sarah’s, who has already pointed out some excellent moments here. I agree with basically every one of her choices, but it’s not like we lacked on hot scenes from Ray. Because I’ll take every opportunity I have to gif Only Friends because at the time it was airing, I didn’t possess the skills to do a thing for the show, I certainly have a gifset queued for later this evening, and I hope it shows up 😀. Now, without further ado, let’s begin.

1. Checking Sand out after he lit his cigarette, episode 1.

Already starting by doing something I said I wouldn’t do, but listen, right when Sand walks off after lighting his cigarette, Ray just looks at him and checks him out with such a laid-back charm. You can clearly see he’s getting ready to hunt and his eyes are on his prey. Honestly, 10/10, no notes, super-hot.

2. Stop playing and tell me what you wanna tell me, episode 6.

If I’m not mistaken, SandRay only has three scenes in episode 6 and this one is the least angry one. Ray has been trying to reach Sand who has been actively ignoring him after the disaster at Sand’s apartment (when he was going to get birthday sex and instead got, I’m my crush’s second option). Suddenly, Sand contacts him and he thinks they’ll finally reconcile, but instead he’s faced with Sand trying to manipulate him by using his feelings for Mew. Ray ain’t stupid, he acts on his emotions quick and hot, but he knew he was being played, and right there when he sighs and rolls his eyes and forces Sand to go to the point? Quite hot.

3. Smoking in the bathtub with Sand, episode 11.

How do I describe this one? Maybe it’s the peacefulness in Ray and like, the genuine happiness from having cleared the misunderstanding with Sand and with no immediate issues in sight (we don’t count the substances abuses for this) that simply makes him glow. His hot score is high. His attractiveness score is high. Happy Ray makes him look hot.

4. Deal with him or I’ll do it myself, episode 12.

Possessive and mad Ray will always have a place in my heart. In this one, he was not only pissed, but he was also fucking insecure the man he recently realized he was in love with was going to ditch him for the hot muscular ex-boyfriend, and he still had in it him to say if you’re going to pick him let me know but if you pick me, deal with this quick or I’ll do it my way. So good.

5. The boy is mine, episode 2.

Ray being a little shit is one of my favorite types of Ray. In this case, it’s a good type of little shit because here he is making sure for the first time in his and Sand’s relationship that Sand will chose him before anyone else. The little satisfied smirk as Amm walks off because he won? Amazing. We love confidence.

6. Take the shirt off me, episode 5.

What a fucking menace, Ray Pakorn. He wanted to be fucked the whole day that day but unfortunately, Sand is working class man and had places to be and things to do. Doesn’t mean Ray can’t get his way, and he will get his way some way or another. When he told Sand to take his very tight shirt off him, I was already at the other side of the room screaming silently. I appreciate Sand’s self-control. I would have none.

7. Stop fooling yourself, Sand, episode 8.

I don’t know how many of you are traumatized by episode 8. For me, it’s pure suffering. Maybe it’s also because discourse that week literally anywhere was insufferable. But anyway, Joker!Ray is a nightmare. He’s drunk and high and very out of his mind but stay with me a little bit. The I can have feelings for as many people as I want thing? Problematic? Yes, but also kind of hot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

8. He could convince you to kill someone or at least help him get rid of the body with his eyes alone, episode 8.

Ray being a little shit has a certain charm, we must agree on that. You have to admit that you need a certain level of confidence and lack of shame to show up to the person you didn’t pick and say, “hey, how about you help me with community service, hun?” And Sand folded like a wet piece of paper, and do you know why? Because Ray had his best pleading for cock 🥺 eyes on, and he was so charming and so manipulative, and so attractive. (I mean, the poking thing? It’s endearing.)

9. Just Ray, episode 2.

I think this is a serious case of lone wolf hotness or something. There’s just something especially attractive about Ray being by himself near the pool, with his sunglasses and a flask.

10. Watching Sand, episode 3.

Sand knows for sure how to fuck someone good, because Ray followed this man looking for a round 2 since that morning they woke up together, and he was sure he’d get that when he invited Sand to play at the hostel’s party. He had eyes on Sand up until Boston reminded him he should have feelings for Mew or whatever. He’s just exhaling hot energy. Let’s never forget the scene we didn’t have of Ray throwing his cup after his “confrontation” with Top, too.

gojo satoru & connections to mania

satoru my poor little mew mew who’s also an evil problematic princess

mania is best described as an elated levels of energy — it's a possible mood swing during bipolar disorder.

energy & enthusiasm

in the beginning of the fight between hanami and jogo in Shibuya, satoru's face is very calm, even when declaring to kill hanami and condemning the both for their weakness. while telling hanami to fight him his face is still neutral, and while eye shining can be a sign of mania — satoru is a character who’s eyes naturally shine.

the real mood switch occurs when the two curses begin to fight him. 

suddenly, satoru's overcome with this expression is tied to raw enthusiasm. his eyes are blown wide as he seems thrilled to be able to fight with the two curses hanami and jogo, along with that his grin is wide to the point of deeper smile lines than he’s ever amassed before. satoru's gained a boost of energy that rivals the slightly more laid back version of himself like a flashing off and on switch.

Even in the fight, when he’s walking down jogo and smiling as he rips the curses arm off, for a split he is smiling regularly and you would assume he’s come down from his high ( which is possible ) for a split second, only to see the energized look on his face when he finally looks back at jogo.

Satoru’s energy and activity heavily increases as he’s going hand combat with the two curses and is actually having fun, he’s smiling as he toys with these two curses like it’s nothing and is hyper in movement. 

this is best explained as satoru's ikigai. he loves to fight, he's good at fighting ( and everything else canonically) — the world ( at this moment at least ) needed him to fight and fighting is what pays for him. according to ikigai, that would be gojo's meaning of life, to be a fighter.

This is not the last time we see Satoru’s eyes blown in a fight out of enthusiasm — he’s under the same emotional outlier when he’s fighting sukuna, aka sukugumi in the more recent chapters. The people yearn for someone ‘ho is you cool?’ is ass atleast once.

mood switching

SINCE I’m talking about gojo’s extremely active energy, there’s nothing better than talking about hyperactivity when he’s getting to teach — even in animation, he stands out with even more exaggerated movement and poses to his younger students 

even in masking your emotional vulnerabilities, nobody can switch this fast from killing their bestfriend to cheering because he’s related to his student. gojo has a great amount of emotional shifts; from laid back, to silly, to serious, to utter ruthlessness in so many situations, which is comparable to manic traits.

the way he teaches, and talks with his students and those around him a lot can be related to pressured speech, not to mention the long amounts of infodumping on random poor souls. he does it especially in hidden inventory, yapping his enemies to death.

it goes so far to even be mentioned in the first light novel by megumi, who has been around satoru for a lot of one another's lives

it implies satoru's an avid and extreme talker, often going off the rails and turning the conversation into a quickly one-sided speech, talking AT you — adding to the evidence of pressured speech

yet, after the elevated sense of elated moods, he crashes.

the end of the high

Satoru especially after his enlightenment in Hidden Inventory ( which i count as the manic episode ) where he was on top of the world and couldn’t feel any sort of sadness over a child he was looking after and relating to just died. 

but after defeating toji, satoru deflates into a dazed state where he cannot regulate his own emotions, turning to suguru for guidance. this is the stage after a manic episode, the depressive episode that leaves one anxious, sad or in satoru’s case; hopeless.

he could not save riko and is now carrying the child’s body throughout a building of people celebrating her death. He cannot do anything to bring her back, for her to enjoy longer days at the beach. All he can do at this moment, in his state is ask suguru if he should kill.

isolation after the manic period

before i talk about this satoru’s loneliness and issues with being understood are not self inflicted as it’s impossible to reach out to people, especially with the end of jujutsu kaisen showing how little he’s been regarded by his peers.

but at the same time he does push away those that want to understand him. spefically yuta, yuta's desire to reach satoru actively combats satoru's want for his students to not to be subjected to anything that could desecrate their youth as it desecrated satoru's youth, riko's and geto's.

often people with mania will isolate themselves so people cannot experience the 'worst' parts of them. that's what i believe satoru is doing — isolating himself and his experiences so yuta cannot experience the worst parts of the being a 'monster' first hand, which he'd be able to relate to satoru's own experiences.

final notes

this thread was based off of my idea of satoru's infinity looks from the eyes of curses exercised by gojo: i imagine it being kind of like the visionary of what a human would hear an alternate say before dying in the mandela catalogue

The main conflict of Sand and Ray

In my previous post about SandRay dynamic I was talking about Ray’s addiction and how it could influence their relationship. But this conflict is based on external factors - Ray's addiction, as the Sand’s savior syndrome are their important characteristics, but not so much the basis of their personalities as a consequence.

Third episode gave me an understanding of some key traits of their characters, which are the basis of their main, internal conflict. What I mean by that is they’ll have a lot of fights caused by some reason or another (addiction - possibly, Mew thing - definitely yes, financial status - maybe, whatever else I don’t know probably everything, this show is a mess) but all these fights are going to happen because they have completely different view on life.

Ray is living in the moment where tomorrow may never happen. In ep1 Sand make that comment

and personally, I’m not sure of Ray knows himself. He doesn’t think ahead. Moreover, he is prone to avoidance - his drinking in a way helps him not to think about what’s happening in his life. He actively seeks ways to not thinking.

So he finds Sand. I mean, of course he likes Sand, but what’s more important, he can turn all of his time and energy on that guy he knows for a couple of weeks or something. One night together and Ray immediately imprints on him like a baby duck? Sure, why not. They both agreed that will be one time thing? But it was good, they both want more, complexities what,

Sand, on the other hand, is basically opposite. He always thinks ahead. He gives up to the moments in ep 2, but he’s concerned about it immediately. He analyzes everything - Ray’s behavior and his problematic tendencies, his own reaction, their relationship - and I can guess comes to some disappointing conclusions.

He knows Ray is a problem. He knows relationship with Ray will be a problem. I find it very interesting to compare these two lines:

Ray is almost in self-defense mode he’s basically like “Oh no I gave mixed signals so this guy may think I’m into him but I’m so obviously not” (yes you are)

Where Sand is saying “I know you are problematic and I don’t need that in my life” (with those eyes yep I believe you)

So he resists. He reminds them both about their status as friends in (almost)every dialogue they have in this episode.

Except for this one. My boy, you are flirting hard, is there something with the air or what?

So he knows things can go off the rails very easy very fast. But he gives in to Ray - not once, but twice. Because while he can understand what’s bad for him, he’s still prone to it. Letting everything go and living in a moment is very attractive idea and I can get Sand easily here.

The problem is, he just can’t afford it. Sand is in a constant survival mode. He have several jobs, he does illegal stuff for money and he has no option but to think through every aspect of his life. He can’t just control some parts of it and let go on others, he needs clear vision of his future.

So yes, the financial aspect plays a big part in who they are. Ray is rich rich and therefore he has no need to think about tomorrow. He is safe. He doesn’t need to think about job, or count expenses, or worry about future. Sand does.

Offtop but I really love the little details about their financial statuses. Sand never eats in university cause money. Ray can start a hotel business after one phone call. And my favorite is the cigarette thing. As a smoker I know NOTHING in the world makes me put on a whole cigarette. Not even a hot guy. Apocalypse can wait while I finish it. So yeah this shot was my moment of realization that Ray is very rich I’m not joking.

So what do I think gonna happen next? Ray will continue to push through, Sand will continue to give up (resisting in a process and tho giving quite mixed signals). Eventually they’ll come to a moment when Ray’s inability to think ahead will hurt Sand. And Sand will probably hurt Ray back. And the rest is history (I honestly don’t know what’ll happen this show is a mess).

And of course their relationship is not only about conflict, I find them very depressing but still very promising. There are a lot of great interactions going here but that’s probably a theme for another post.

what do you like about tokyo mew mew as a whole? I can't remember if you have done a full talk about it before.

Rereading the manga as someone who grew up watching the 2000s anime def revealed I had been viewing a lot of the story with rose tinted glasses. I do enjoy it a lot more than Sailor Moon thought it might just be from me having a bias.

I grew up obsessed with animals so I've already had a draw to Tokyo Mew Mew as it's a magical girl series with the girls based off endangered animals.

The outfits, as I talked about before, are like...the best magical uniforms ever in my opinion. If I had to do a list, Tokyo Mew Mew would be at the top of it for best uniforms followed by Power Puff Girls Z and then Doremi.

I think the names of the characters are very cute too, including them working at a maid cafe so you have these girls also employed as they are risking their lives saving the world.

I also enjoy Quiche and that added element of the antagonists having some redemption. Quiche is like...the most problematic element for many of course but I love the little shit and he is was led baby me into falling down the villain fan rabbit hole. It was also my first exposure to a villain in love with a protagonist (and it not ending with the fella dying) and that was one of the biggest "WAIT YOU CAN DO THAT???" moments to me when it came to story telling.

Tokyo Mew Mew does suffer from a fair share of things I don't really like, like the sexualization of the girls (especially Ichigo), how Ichigo's personality doesn't get as much room as I'd like due to her one-track mind on her crush (I love the moments she gets to hang with the Mew Mews), and Aoyama just not having as much dimension to him as I'd like (that's the one thing Sailor Moon def has over Tokyo Mew Mew for me since Tuxedo Mask was at least a funny dude in the beginning).

OVERALL--Tokyo Mew Mew is the most nostalgic magical girl series for me as I grew up watching it when it aired on 4Kidz when I was a kid, and then I rewatched the actual unedited subbed version on Youtube with each episode in three parts when I was in middle school.

It's not the best magical girl series BUT it's got some charm to it that I appreciate.

Okay. Let me try.

Boeing. Look, he is nothing but drama and trouble and I love him. He walked in looking so sweet and like he was going to be the best queer platonic friend and then he lit everything on fire and is going to fan those flames with his lips. Love him, love his wrongs.

Boston. My problematic child. I love him so much. He wants to have casual sex and he's afraid of making connections because he knows he's leaving and he has his very own moral code that doesn't always reflect the rest of the world but does reflect him and he is constantly being judged by the people around him for daring to be a promiscuous gay man and while he has done his fair share of gay wrongs he's done far less than he is accused of.

Sand. My beloved boy who deserves so much. He gave back the money that he was given to help Ray because he loved Ray too much to accept money knowing how much it would hurt Ray and he didn't have a chance to defend himself but he still loves that mess of a man so much but he loves his friends as well (friends being Nick) and he's mostly just doing his best not to drown.

Ray. The problematic babygirl. I love a broken little rich boy. I always do, I always will. The one person in the room who feels the least loved and acts out because there's no other way to get attention or love or affection and who latch onto whoever shows them kindness but doesn't know how to show kindness or love in return because he's never felt worthy of it and so throws money at everything hoping it'll keep people there but hates it all the more for keeping people there because it proves how useless he is.

Dan. The darling green flag. I'm sorry I joined in other people in doubting you, I wasn't sure how to disagree at the time and you turned out to just be a sweetheart. I appreciate that. I feel bad that you won't get the boy and that Jojo is unlikely to give me NickDanBoston because that is my new ideal... but still. You get to be here!

Nick. The red flag sexual. This boy. I really do love him but I also fear for him. He is a disaster. He is a danger to himself and others and the only person he should date is Botson. No denials. No hesitation. Just... date Boston, child, he is exactly who you want to date.

April. Also in the show. She's got no screen time so I've got no reason to hate her but also no reason to love her. But she's sweet and seems like a good communicator?

Top. The one who's trying too hard. I am kind of indifferent to Top. He is... fine. Like, I am not emotionally invested in him at all, frankly. But he's fine. I kind of hope he realizes that he should move on from Mew and maybe, like, find someone else or just exist as single for a bit? Because the way Mew treats him is not exactly ready for a second chance.

Mew. The sanctimonious one. I spent the start of this show hoping that Mew would be manipulative only for him to just turn out to be judgemental instead. That's much less interesting. And much less enjoyable to watch. He thinks he's so much better than all his friends and Top and even Boeing. He thinks he's always right and that his moral code is the Only Good One and his worry for his friends is rarely expressed kindly or with empathy. I don't like him that much but I'm mostly just bored by him. Also, he should have known Boston wouldn't blackmail anyone considering how someone was actively blackmailing him and that Mew knows that Boston's sex life being revealed is something he doesn't want.

Cheum. The really sanctimonious one. The mean girl who thinks she's a mom friend. I just... don't like her. I really don't. I think she thinks she's better than everyone around her except Mew and that she holds a lot of judgements against her friends for not living up to her idea of who they should be and that she is not kind or empathetic and that she should, frankly, take a step back and consider kindness and active listening for even a second.

Atom. The fucker. This boy can go to hell. He wants to hurt Boston for doing exactly what he said he was going to do, lied about him and not only lied but made very specific accusations against him as part of the lying because he was hurt. Atom is out to destroy Boston and has basically destroyed his chance at passing this class and could easily set him up for blackmail at this point (exactly what he accused him of.)

yo's bf arrives on the scene to act as another character pointing out ray's day drinking. sorry ray the narrative agrees it's problematic to hang out at a bar all day when you're not sleeping with someone on staff. yo and bf have a cute moment and ray goes sweet and starry eyed about it.

sand calls him an asshole (affectionate)* again and gets up to go. ray grabs him by the arm and asks with feeling if he is really okay with this, which is the narrative reminding us that we are still allowed to sympathize with him even when he's being a little shit bc he understands consent. they have a nice little ~what are we~ conversation which, like—even though we know it's not actually going to work out ok for either of them even over the course this episode—is some pretty healthy communication, especially stacked right up against everything we've had from boston and nick this week. I'm honestly consistently surprised ray is being allowed to be a decent person but I'm not complaining

*nearly every time the subs say "dickhead" "asshole" etc what the characters are actually calling each other is สัตว์ "animal". I get that this is a more commonly used insult in thai but I think it almost holds up as a direct translation in terms of relative weight and I sort of wish it was glossed more consistently somehow. idk someone come tell me more tho

back at the pool nick meets top, who he recognizes from the photo booth pictures he found at boston's. they get a set of villain zooms, one each top and nick. nick baby don't do anything sand wouldn't do ok?

back to one of nick's online-in-a-dark-room moments. he's stalking top and finding boston comments all over his ig. the camera is not looking kindly on him here. something something the toxicity of jealousy and obsession. nick has real feelings involved so he's already at a disadvantage in his dynamic with boston, but suddenly I get the sense that boston is not necessarily safe, even if he's not going to catch feelings

That is a very broad ask and I am very bad at lists so I will only speaks of ships that I think have some formative long lasting impact for me.

Lizzie and Gordo were my first live action ship.

My very first ship was from an anime, Their og names were Sana and Akito from Kodomo No Omocha. I knew it as Rossana (Italian name). This ships was my childhood!! When I was a baby that was basically the age of the actual characters. There are a few other anime with ships that got me, like Card Captor Sakura and Tokyo Mew Mew.

Buffy x Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

There are a couple of misc Disney/Nick and Italian Shows ships that I loved but I wouldn't consider formative. Except for Logan and Quinn from s4 of Zoey 101. Unfortunatly the author that must no longer be named is in this as well. Originally Ron and Hermione then Draco and Harry later. There is also a few that I think are too obsocure like Wicked Sciene (Toby and Elisabeth) and Wildfire (Chris and Junior) or the Sleepover Club (Frankie and Mattew for s1 and Charlie and Jason for s2).

Veronica and Logan from Veronica Mars - They were everything to me, I remain devasted about the so called s4, I have not been able to watch this show again since I saw s4.

I used to be the kind of person that likes canon ships, and took me a while to understand non canon shipping and get on board with non-canon shipping. I was mostly over it by the time I got too tumblr. But it took a while longer, when I start to get into queer ships, that I started to see the appeal. I hesitated with queer ships at first because it didn't feel like I should be shipping that, since I thought I was straight at the time. So I was a late bloomer in terms of non-canon ships and queer ships.

Then of course there is the BL era (which I am still on) which honestly should be a list of it's own, there is way too many. But I have to shout out the very first BL ships I had, which are the ones that made me fall in love with the genre

heyyy so I just read your ask and how you said mew and top are somewhat unique characters and I agree so much and I think that's one of the reasons why they get so much hate. first I just wanna say I'm not generalizing everyone cuz I know this doesn't apply to all but let's face it A LOT of bl watchers still have some very problematic views. one of the main ones is how they seriously think virgin = dainty little flower that can't do anything for themselves. and since mew is self assured and sets boundaries they think he must be secretly manipulative or bad bc in their minds there's no way a virgin could act like that. and with top...they will never give him the benefit of the doubt bc to them someone that looks like him could never be a victim. and another thing with mew is some actually hate him for "withholding sex" (such a nasty term). so whichever side they fall on the hatred for his character mostly has to do with sex in one way or another. It's pretty gross.

Only Friends: How Mew criticises Ray VS How Sand criticises Ray

Something I've really noticed since Episode 4 is the increasing distinction between how Mew and Sand school Ray. The scenes in Episode 6 and Episode 7 provide a perfect point of comparison. Both Mew and Sand use the phrase 'love yourself' towards Ray but the tone and delivery is completely different.

Unsurprisingly, what Ray desperately needs in his life is a mother figure. Someone who can be firm and stern when necessary but still caring at the same time. Sand's approach feels better suited to Ray in this respect.

Sand starts by acknowledging that Ray's hurting but it doesn't excuse his behaviour and it isn't going to stop Sand from calling it out. He makes sure to explain why it's problematic, why it's hurtful, why it's dangerous. Sand's words are driven by concern. He's even worried about the guilt Ray would have to shoulder if he did hurt anyone else.

Whereas in the scene with Mew, he makes immediate assumptions (I still maintain that Ray was not high here, he looked pretty darn sober throughout the bathroom scene to me), but that's where Mew's mind goes. His question "why don't you love yourself at all?" implies that Ray doesn't have any self-respect to take care of himself, and so what he's saying sounds driven by disappointment. Mew's tone also carries an air of exasperation, 'I've told you again and again'. @thatgirl4815 does a great job of commenting on Mew's attitude towards Ray in Episode 6 (here).

After Sand has said what he needs to say, he still doesn't want Ray to feel too bad. Sand's little pat on Ray's knee is an attempt to soften the blow, paired with a slightly helpless feeling of, 'I just want what's best for you'.

Now let's observe how Ray reacts when schooled.

Ray may not always implement the stern talking to he's getting, but you can tell that when with Sand, Ray is listening. He doesn't try to deflect, retort or dodge. He usually looks guilty. Guilt suggests remorse. Which means you realise what you've done is wrong. Whereas Ray's initial reaction to Mew is slight shock. This is the biggest indication to me that Ray wasn't getting high here. When he finally responds to Mew, it's brushed off with a laugh - 'yeah, yeah, I'm fine, it's nothing, no matter' - it doesn't seem like any of what Mew's said has really sunk in, just that Ray doesn't want him to dwell on this point any further.

How Mew delivers his pep talk feels authoritative, 'I told you to quit using drugs' (and you didn't listen). Your mistake is not taking my advice. On the other hand, Sand never once says anything along the lines of, 'I told you so, I warned you, I tried to stop you'. It's not about Ray following his orders, it's Sand providing Ray with the context to hopefully avoid making reckless decisions for himself in future.

Mew seems to have accepted Ray's inability to change, and his criticisms are merely a matter of routine at this point. Whereas Sand seems genuinely driven to encourage Ray to do better for both the sake of himself and others around him.

In a world filled with racists and bigots, why are we directing any amount of hatred towards furries? They're not hurting anyone.

Am I a furry? No.

Are furries chill? Yes.

It is not my thing, and I know little to none about them, but I've never had anything but a pleasant interaction with a furry, especially in real life.

These are people who are just trying to find a decent way to express themselves.

Why make fun of them for that?

There are people in this world who center their identity around their car, or their favorite sports team. What do you care if somebody else finds a different way to express themselves?

If you're a furry part in the terminology, I know it's more than just expressing yourself, but I'm trying to make a point.

"Ew, a furry convention."

Oh, you mean a place where a bunch of people are going to come together and enjoy a shared thing they like?

Might I add, in a way that doesn't harm anyone?

Furries as a punching bag has become a joke in and of itself, and I just don't understand the hate.

People call it cringe, people call it weird. It's none of those things.

These people are just being genuine, and if you're being genuine, it's never cringe.

If you find something in this fucked up world that makes you happy, engaged, and gives you a community, like I did, hold onto that for dear life. That's what these people are doing, and I respect them for it.

Are there problematic people among them? Yes, because there's problematic people among everything.

But, I can think of far more widely accepted things that have far more horrible people in it.

So, let's stop dunking on people who are trying to find a way to enjoy life, and instead, dunk on the people who are trying to stop others from enjoying their life.
