Will you do a headcanon with Shouma judging the public safety detectives and deciding who he thinks is best suited to date his precious big sister? (We both know the answer is Kaga but let’s just pretend we don’t lol)

omg thank you for this ask haha. originally i was going to do a ranking but they all have different charms so i kind of changed it to a grading (although you can take the order they appear in as a sort of ranking bc that’s how i originally wrote it). anyway bear in mind that i’m sure no matter what, all potential issues get resolved and they all get properly approved of~

grading public safety based on shouma’s opinion

kaga: A

even if we tried to pretend it wouldn’t be him it’s IMPOSSIBLE for him to not top this list since it’s canon that shoma thinks that kaga is too good for his sister lmao. i think about how supportive kaga is of his mc’s family every single day of my life and that time that he took shoma all around tokyo and had that talked with him all night (while mc fell asleep on the sofa and kaga stroked her hair and repositioned her head onto his lap RIGHT IN FRONT OF SHOMA HELP TOO CUTE) and it makes me all warm and softe. if not for canon, i would probably rank him in 2nd or 3rd but IT’S CANON SO!!!!! kagainu is my hlitf otp ;sldkfsj

momose: A+

sorry couldn’t help myself. i bet shoma would think he’s just so cool, dressed in his sukajan and supreme tshirt. momose has style coming out of his fingertips and a guy of shoma’s age who evidently cares enough about fashion to critique his sister’s socks would literally be drooling and taking notes.

goto: A

basically bc goto is a normal person lmao. goto is serious and genuine to the point where his sincerity even reflected in his name (誠) and i think his love for his mc always, always shines through very purely. i think shoma and goto would get along bc shoma is around the same age (maybe a little older?) as issei so goto is kind of used to dealing with younger siblings of that age.

soma: B

soma’s primary professional skill is his ability to fit smoothly into any social situation and change his mannerisms into the ideal for whatever the situation calls for, so i think he could easily charm mc’s family. with that said, shoma is very perceptive and might be suspicious of how smooth soma is and why someone who’s so sophisticated is with his sister? soma is someone who hides his true self from everyone (including even his mc) so i wonder what it’ll take to get him to open up to shoma fully. with that said, shoma is like his sister in that he’s really good at opening people up, and also soma is like SO STUPIDLY WHIPPED when it comes to his mc. tbh i’m excited to see him meet the family bc soma is so emotionally detached from family matters bc of his trauma that i honestly wonder how he would react, seeing how cheerful and lively mc’s family is (especially seeing her interactions with her younger sibling being similar to his interactions with his younger sibling ahhhh I’M emotional thinking about it).

kurosawa: B

bro i was stumped on this forever, so i just chucked him here. originally i had him right at the bottom bc in my mind, tooru is forever a CLOWN but then i thought about it more seriously lol. honestly kurosawa is a master manipulator moodmaker and he’d know just what to say to get along with shoma. also, he can be serious when it comes down to it too. he has a really youthful spirit (lmao) and he’s also the same age as the mc so i think he and shoma could get along really well.

shinonome: B

ayumu, aka mr perfect, is another one who would put on a good face for meeting the family. i don’t think he will win over shoma’s trust through his words but rather through his actions. honestly i really want to know what ayumu is going to say about his mc to her family since he is rarely honest to her and can barely be honest about his feelings to even himself. tbh i have the feeling there’s going to be some kind of drama and then he will prove himself and his love for her through his actions (as he always does!) but i do also think that we’ll get to see ayumu being proper and courteous about his mc for once. honestly it was such a pleasant surprise to see kaga being so polite and nice at his mc’s home. i wonder if shoma will ever find out how ayumu really treats his beloved sister...

ishigami: B/C

ishigami is kind of serious and stern but he was very serious about meeting his mc’s family. i think shoma was at least won over by the gold pudding? i originally had him ranked up #3 but then i dropped him a little bc i do wonder what shoma would think about the fact that ishigami broke up with his mc tho (compared to the fact that he leaves his sister in kaga’s hands bc kaga is so steadfastly serious about being with her always). obviously ishigami has his mc’s best interests at heart always but i think he hasn’t quite resolved his issues re: family yet and may not necessarily be able to open up to shoma until then.

namba: C

i guess the biggest issue is the age thing? and namba isn’t necessarily like kaga who tends to be very sure of himself and their relationship; he’s a little more hard on himself (i don’t wanna say self-loathing but he does that thing where he thinks he’s not good enough for her). i wonder if shoma would end up having to console(?) him or provide a fresh perspective if namba got stressy about their relationship lmao. but also if i were shoma’s age and my older sibling were dating someone not that much younger than our dad, i wouldn’t necessarily know how to relate to them.

tsugaru: D/A

a sketchy man who doesn’t feel the need to hide his eccentricities. the gift he’d bring to her household would be something absolutely disgusting like chocolate takoyaki. he’s either a D or an A bc maybe shoma actually likes that kind of thing? who can say

Do you have any controversial headcanons that go against what is generally accepted by the fandom? Do you incorporate this into writing your muse or keep it to yourself?

I imagine I do! I don’t look much into the fandom anymore outside of fanart (you see too much Elizabeth hate, you get real turned off from reading just about anything related to her. the fandom misogyny never dies).

One, my Elizabeth thinks beetles are cute - specifically the ones from the Scarabaeidae family. Her favorites are the ones that are black with a rainbow sheen to their shells and the jewel scarabs. Francis and Edward are absolutely repulsed by this fascination and have done their damndest to deter Elizabeth from it, but Alexis is supportive of it. She has a jewel beetle brooch among her jewelry (Alexis bought this for her on her 12th birthday) that is among her most precious items that’d she’d be devastated over should it go missing.

Ladies aren’t meant to play with bugs, but Elizabeth does and has ever since she was a tot. It’s gotten her teased before by children of her social circles and as a result has made her cry, but she still plays with them, by now having grown a thick skin and (mostly) not caring what anyone says.

Between Her and Ciel, she is the one who captures spiders and takes them outside.

Two, her life should not revolve around Ciel. It’s a terrible habit, it’s a terrible way to be. It’s the Victorian Era so this is simply how she’s raised to be and it’s what’s expected of her. Eventually, I want to have her start growing outside of him and stop fussing over him so much, and start focusing more on herself and developing as a character. She’s beginning this, especially the more I write her with other characters, and I hope to flesh her out as an independent character who, while she loves Ciel, doesn’t have her world revolve around him. His doesn’t revolve around hers, and I’m just not a fan of the girl-character-revolves-around-brooding-boy-who-doesn’t-have-as-much-investment-in-her-as-she-does-in-him dynamic.

This also includes breaking a few social norms expected from females that would irritate Francis, but it’ll be good for her. Claudia’d be proud.

Three, this post is getting too long but there’s others. She’s not exactly as soft and sweet as one would expect, not entirely, anyways. She’s not frightened by things girls are expected to be frightened of. Her mind has a capability that’s more like a cold assassin mode that’d frighten Edward and I know a lot of people wouldn’t be down for that, but! It’s my headcanon, and it’s my Lizzie, so nyeh.

What is something that was never addressed at all in the canon material that you have independently developed for your muse?

We’ve never seen how Elizabeth digested the Campania arc and that bothers me immensely. She’s so young and she just went through one of the (known) darkest events of her life; killing hordes of the undead that tried to devour her, then proceeding to be a witness to the most traumatic sight of a sinking ship and not to mention, hearing the sounds of it. The masses of people screaming for their lives, from pain, from terror, from despair. The loudest groaning and breaking of metal, the snapping sounds of electricity. The sound as the water consumed the Campania.

My Elizabeth has referred to it before, and it was a line that’s so short but honestly one of the saddest I’ve written on my public blogs: “I never knew the ocean could scream.”

She’s a side character so we never get to see how she digests news that comes to her, but this? This is especially just one of the things I really wanted depth with. I wanted her reactions, I wanted to know her feelings after the fact, her thoughts. Canon won’t give it to me, so I’ve crafted it all myself. She definitely has PTSD from watching the ship sink, and she starts shaking uncontrollably when the notion of taking a boat to anywhere is brought up, and she starts to reject everyone erratically who tries to talk her into it, working herself into a fit of pure anxiety and panic. You just.. cannot get her on the sea anymore. It’s not happening, not while she’s conscious.

As for the Bizarre Dolls, that is also something I want to know her thoughts on but it’s all on me to make. AND I WILL DO IT. >:( She’s actually not traumatized from them, which is CONCERNING FOR ME AS HER ROLEPLAYER BUT I WILL GET INTO THAT WHEN I MAKE A HEADCANON POST, but they were definitely a dark chapter I need to cover base with for her, especially seeing as how they’ve remained so integral to the story, and how canonically, she is bound to be wed to one (I highly doubt we’re going to see these kids make it to the ages of marital union, you know both twins are checking out before then - possibly with their keepers, but you know).

What canon character do you really wish your muse could interact more with?

I was thinking about this literally yesterday, but oh my god, I would love for Lizzie to be able to interact with a Soma. They’re two people I’ve wanted to see interact in canon a lot more than they have, but they’ve just never been given the spotlight, which is a damn shame because I feel like they could really, REALLY bond to a deep level - down to becoming best friends. Like, a level where Soma would take Lizzie’s side when it came to Ciel kind of level. They’re both absolutely delightful characters with a lot of similarities, but a lot of differences that’d bounce off each other well! They’d learn from each other (Soma already has a graduated education so him showing Elizabeth the ropes when it comes to learning and being her study partner and teacher?? help?? I love it??)! And because of them bonding, Paula and Agni would wind up bonding, too. That’s just.. 🥺 The thought of those four just having a really tight little social circle together warms my heart, okay?

And god, the way the manga’s done the both of them so damn dirty. They’re precious people who did not deserve to be broken as hard as they have been (it was bound to happen, seeing as they were both characters who wanted to make Ciel happy the most so of course, they’ve been punished the hardest for it). I think right now, ESPECIALLY right now, that bond could be one source of much needed comfort for Soma (given he doesn’t cut her out for being related to Ciel, of course). He has someone on his side. I know he’s going home, but being so deeply bonded to Elizabeth could allow for a great depth in understanding the situation.. but also, exacerbating it. And potentially making things worse. Because he’d find out about the twin situation and you know he’d want to dismantle R!Ciel, and Elizabeth would be shocked about the murder reveal and in her emotional state, things could go EXTREMELY sideways between her, her fiancé and the Undertake.. OK LET’S NOT GET INTO THAT. Although that sort of drama and tension is exactly Kuroshitsuji’s brand.

BASICALLY. SOMA. YES PLEASE. I’D LOVE FOR LIZZIE TO BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH A SOMA.

I’d also have a ball with her being able to interact with Paula, Sieglinde and Joker. :’)

Tea and Whispers

Drabble by Nekkyo Usagi - Matsunaga Hisahide and Lady Soma

"Oh no, this will not do at all." Lady Soma huffed to herself, as she sorted through her collection of tea ceremony implements. "It has to be just right!" The occasion fast approaching required nothing but the finest Soma clan had to offer. Of course, to the outside eye the plan was merely a small and private meeting, a simple tea ceremony between close associates. But to Lady Soma, it was more than that. Even the most subtle of meetings brought with it many areas of expertise one could communicate. Such was the way of strategy in these times. But unlike the not so hidden drama and subterfuge of the court scene, this meeting was different.

Of course, it would not be the first time she had kept company with Matsunaga Hisahide. They had often come together in discussions over tea ceremony, herbal remedies, tonics and antiquities from across the sea, political intrigue, stories from the shogun's court, and exchanging almost competitive remarks over their two respective sons.

Lady Soma fussed and picked through her sets of chado, striving to select the perfect pieces for seasonality and appropriateness, in hopes to impress this man so versed in the arts. There was a level of caution to be aware of along the selection process. She did not wish to appear as if she were trying too hard to impress. That would be embarrassing. As the day waned, and late afternoon approached, Lady Soma was finally finished with the needed preparations and awaited the arrival of the Lord of Yamato province.

"My my, Lady Soma, you have really outdone yourself. These implements are exquisite. You flatter an old hermit."

Lady Soma smiled gently, breaking from her poise for a moment, as she mixed the fragrant tea power into a gentle froth. "Mere trinkets compared to your splendid collection, Lord Hisahide." Lady Soma replied, handing him the tea bowl. "I am honored by your compliments."

Matsunaga paused, examining the colors and unique glazing of the tea bowl, a sharp eyebrow raised slightly in interest. Though simple in its design and shape, the color of the vessel intrigued him, a soft cool green, so like the storm frothed seas of Soma's coastlines. It brought a sense of calm and reflection to the senses. "Unique," Matsunaga mused, as he sipped with reverence. "An unusual pattern. I am curious to know it's origin."

Lady Soma straightened, glowing with pride. "If I may be so bold, my lord, you will not find this style of chado anywhere but within Soma clan. It was made with the soils of our land and sculpted with the hands of our own artisans."

"Is that so?" The lord of Yamato glanced at the vessel once more with curiosity, before sipping the last of its contents. "A fine cup it makes, my lady. Though I must say, it is quite a bold move for your small clan to invest in such a craft."

"You underestimate Soma clan, my lord. It is true that we are well known for our fine horses. But we must keep with the changing times. Perhaps there are days ahead when men will make war with tea and words instead of spears and swords?"

Matsunaga chuckled at that. "The war of tea has been raging for a thousand years. You are wise to invest in it. Perhaps these vessels will serve as messengers to those after us, the beauty and struggles of this era captured for all time." Matsunaga admired the tea bowl once more before placing it down before Lady Soma. He smiled knowingly. "Though not born of the Soma, I do admire your pride in it."

"Of course, my dear son Yoshitane is my greatest pride. I wish for nothing more than his success as clan leader."

"No doubt."

The tea ritual having been completed, Lady Soma relaxed her shoulders, easing the slight tension put there by her concentration while performing the ceremony. Though she had done it many times, being under the heavy, dark gaze of Matsunaga Hisahide, a man who could rival Sen no Rikyu in his knowledge of tea ceremony, felt intimidating. She could feel his hawk gold eyes counting every move, every turn of the hand, but she was determined to impress. Assuming she had performed admirably, judging by his relaxed tone, Lady Soma eased into the more casual conversing she'd been hoping for. Though their relationship had been distant and professional for the most part, she truly did admire him and, when not under scrutiny over etiquette, found his company...familiar.

"I must say, your generously instructing my dear Yoshitane in the way of tea has been indispensable." Lady Soma's eyes softened at the thought of her son. "He has gained much respect because of it, and for this I am grateful to you, Lord Hisahide."

"He has proven to be a...dedicated pupil. Both of our sons still have much to learn." Matsunaga replied, a tired expression crossing his countenance for a moment.

"So it would seem," Lady Soma gently put the tea implements to the side, and slid across the floor closing the distance between them slightly, though they were already in close proximity within the walls of a modest tea room. Soma clan did not have the opulence of the courts nor of Matsunaga's own house, but it was beautiful in its simplicity, and suitable for private meetings. "You know, dear Hisamichi did come to visit with my son Yoshitane, the other day. They rode horses together, practiced calligraphy and engaged in some sparring. It was so refreshing to see them getting along so well!" "Indeed?" Matsunaga replied. "I am pleased as well that Hisamichi has found such an admirable companion as the Lord of Soma."

Lady Soma coyly hid her smile behind her sleeve as she spoke. "You should have seen them, the way they kept company! Why, you would almost think they were brothers! Oho! Should we not be good parents and...get along better, as well?"

Keeping her eyes low, Lady Soma spoke softly, a sweetness in her voice, as she eyed the Lord of Yamato closely, her flirtatious nature suddenly getting the better of her. Lady Soma's dark eyes followed the lines and folds of his dark silk kimono, the way the sleeves lay over the curve of his strong arms and broad shoulders, how the collar hugged greedily against his the back of his neck, the sheen in his black oiled hair. Lord Matsunaga was a sight to behold, she had to admit. And in this close setting, she could feel the heat rise up the back of her neck, and her heart fluttered. But no, this was merely a meeting. It could lead to closer ties with the Matsunaga clan, who were in good favor with the Shogun's court. Ties to the shogun could provide benevolence for the Soma. She had to think of her clan's future...her son's future...not her own.

Her wandering eyes had not gone unnoticed and she suddenly found herself captured within his gaze. Eyes like molten gold, Matsunaga Hisahide regarded her with amusement. Her heart fluttered in her chest at the color of them burning in the dark, not unlike beast or a dragon. But behind that glow, she could see the sadness of a man who had loved and lost in the past, who suffered in silence, hiding his sorrows behind gold and jewels, fire and smoke.

“Ho...“ He smiled, the flames in his eyes dancing. "...an interesting proposal, Lady Soma."

A hard thump in her chest shook her whole body at that word, and Lady Soma fumbled to compose herself. "O-oh! Yes, well, ah...I-It is pleasant to be in the company of one who understands the arts and civility as well as you do. So many these days are more concerned with waving a sword around, they forget the importance of tradition and good character. We must ensure that our children inherit these qualities...it is our duty as parents, don't you agree?"

"Why yes. Desirable qualities honed over a lifetime." Matsunaga noticed her trying to evade his gaze now that she had caught it. A fine game to play. He leaned closer, admiring the intricate patterns of her kimono and its intricate seasonal patterns, the smoothness of her soft coral hair draping over small shoulders. The scent of incense permeated from him, cedarwood and pine, and her heart thundered in her chest as his frame neared, almost touching shoulders, his shadow casting over her. "Dignity...astuteness...benevolence....such attractive virtues are rare and precious commodities. Their value is without measure."

"You are now a collector of virtues as well as tangible treasures, Lord Hisahide?"

Matsunaga grinned. "One can gather all the treasure in the world, and still possess no virtue. They are the most sought after riches of all."

"Noble words. You have changed for the better, Lord Hisahide."

"Ho...have I changed, Lady Soma?"

"You were once called a villain. Surely a man, now chasing after virtues rather than gold, has no need for such a title?"

Matsunaga leaned closer, bringing his hand up to her face, tucking the loose strands behind her ear. Lady Soma's heart leaped into her throat at the sudden closeness, and her fingers trembled. He looked into her eyes with a warmth she had never seen before, but the fire still lingered, smoldering like a candle in the dim light.

"Perhaps you should still be wary of this...villain. Who knows whether or not he may try to steal away your heart?"

Lady Soma fought for breath, and forced herself to shyly look away from the fire in his eyes. "M-my heart...?"

This was becoming absurd. A woman of her age and status should not even be having such a private meeting with the lord of another province. They were colleagues, simply acquaintances. Had her flirtatious words given him the wrong impression? "Oh no! What desire would there be for that? I am merely an old widow..."

"My dear Lady Soma," Matsunaga Hisahide chuckled low and sultry, a playful smokiness in his tone as he gently took her hand. "You already know how much I treasure...antiquity."

A flustered huff gave away Lady Soma's sudden loss of composure. Her face felt hot, flushed redder than winter Camilla flower, as she glanced toward the open windows and moved herself away from under his shadow.

"O-oh my, h-how late in the day it had become! Lord Hisahide, I dare say I have kept you in my company for far too long! Do forgive me." She busied herself with stacking the cups and tea utensils, trying to hide her nervousness with laughter.

Matsunaga smiled at her jittery voice as she fought to regain her poise. "Do not be so concerned, my lady. Only an empty castle full of trinkets await me."

"Have you forgotten dear Hisamichi? Surely, after all this time, would you not wish to take every opportunity to spend time with your dear son!"

"Oh, I have made much time for him. But if you insist, I shall take my leave" Matsunaga rose to his knees and gracefully bowed. "I thank you for your gracious hospitality."

Lady Soma bowed low in grateful reverence to the Lord of Yamato as he slid on his knees, crouched through the small tea house door, and exited the room. A wave of relief crashed over her, as she sat back onto her heels. Her heart still pounded loudly in her chest, and she smacked it with a hand to try and still it's thunder. The still fresh memory of those molten gold eyes permeated her thoughts. Not even her late lord husband had ever looked at her with such fire. Her breath fluttered like a young maiden. Unbelievable! Her habit of flirtatious and flattering speech had won her many strategic battles of words and wit but this time...How greatly she had miscalculated...

"Oh, Lady Soma...I seem to have forgotten one thing." Her body jolted as Matsunaga's voice echoed back into the tea house, though he remained outside. "That cosmetic serum you so graciously bequeathed to me, is simply marvelous. Your tonic, I dare say, it feels like a spark of youth has been returned to me. The bottle is quite close to becoming empty, I am afraid. Would you be so kind...?" "Oh, of course, Lord Hisahide. It would be my pleasure. I shall have another sent to you forthwith." "Most gracious. Though, I was hoping that you might deliver in person, Lady Soma. I do so enjoy our little talks." Another deep wash of red clothed her cheeks as Lady Soma bowed low within the secluded teahouse, her heart still thundering wildly, as Matsunaga Hisahide slowly walked away down the stone path.

A great yet...wonderful, miscalculation, indeed.

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Chapter 274 Review

Last chapter sure left Erina in daze with the sudden Shoujo plot twist that didn’t prepare her to embrace it. Now, she is out of commission as the two guys are about to duel. Shoujo got nothing on this. This chapter however goes back to Shounen, going to a personal level. It’s the usual case of battle procedure; only now it’s personal and I don’t mean the fight over the Goddess.

In fact, you can say that the last chapter was done for comedic purposes, though I do believe it will lead to something later on. The point is the battle isn’t over obtaining the Goddess like she is placed on the line, but it’s the dignity that counts. It’s like me saying, “Once I win, I will be the best chef in the universe!” Unless aliens can’t cook, my words are just words. For those who believe that she’s on the line, that’s not the point at all. Besides, she’s knocked out as Megumi treats her. It’s a funny way to take her out before she can stop anything, especially since she is the Headmaster. I’m fine with this.

That doesn’t mean this battle will be just bragging rights. Instead, there’s a bet on the line, which essentially make this as Shokugeki-esque. Now I am interested. Soma is the one to make it happen since he challenge Saiba with a bet that if he loses, he will reveal his true identity. He still don’t know that Suzuki is Saiba. That’s funny, because I believe Erina knows, but since she’s knocked out, Soma made a bet on it. In short, it’s a useless condition. Clever move, I have to admit on the writing part.

As evil Saiba is, he plays fairly by requesting a bet on his behalf as well. I find it funny how he asks Megumi for a second opinion, like she happened to be his supporter. If he wasn’t evil, I could imagine a new pairing ensue. While Soma’s bet is wasteful in a sense, Saiba takes it to a deep situation. If Saiba wins, Soma will hand over his precious knife to him. Soma’s reaction is very telling.

I’m glad that this battle not only has gotten interesting, but it has taken to a personal manner; one in which Soma reacted with anger. That knife has been a signature to his persona. That’s like removing the straw hat from Luffy of One Piece. It does make me curious on how much value he has with that knife. Could it be from his father or even his mother? If the latter, that would be devastating as hell. As savage this may sound, but I want him to lose just to see how the story flow. Nevertheless, I am invested with this scenario.

The battle begins and Megumi is treating Erina with an ice pack. Dammit, Megumi. You were the chosen one! You supposed to train her to be prepared for any Shoujo or even Joei level of romance! Joking aside, it is comical to see her treating Erina. Megumi is assigned as the judge. That’s high pressure. She can be the savior or the destroyer; all depends on the victor. I doubt Soma will hate her if Saiba wins, but that would be some drama. I did laugh Soma got his gear ready; hype and hell bent to win. All of this wouldn’t happen if Erina was around, but Shoujo plot was too much for her. I blame Soma for his blunt words.

Another reminder that Megumi and Soma have no idea who Suzuki is as well as why he wants Soma’s knife. Soma believes he’s another Mimasaka, who goes around and takes their precious tools in a Shokugeki. Oddly enough, he’s not that wrong with the end scene, but obviously there’s more. I assumed he is going to take it to prove to Joichiro that he defeated his precious son. It’s the bragging rights at its finest (worst). But it’s fine with Soma, because he’s powered up for a while. Good for you, Soma!...

Megumi feels calm for Soma’s win as Erina is still in coma. It’s going to be a rude awakening if Soma loses. He puts the final touch to his dish and it’s done. It feels like it’s been a long time since we last saw a cooking process in this series. Soma creates Cheese Fondue Pork Loin Katsu Combo Meal. It is similar to the one I had not too long ago, only no cheese fondue. Thinking about it makes me hungry for one. Funny how Megumi considered this Soma-kun-y. That sounds right. Soma’s dish is first to serve…

A little mug contains cheese, but with an added twist of black sauce. Dipping the katsu on it and you get something tasty. Now I really want to go back and get one with the sauce on the side. It also feels like it’s been a while since we last received a descriptive detail on the dish, which makes it sound even tastier. Soma has learned well with the timing use of heating the pork roast. The way how it sounds doesn’t seem easy to pull off. It creates an illusion that it has been fried yet they forget that it was.

Megumi is so floored by the tastiness, she has become a gal. Well, that’s one way to address the black sauce and the flavor. I never thought to see her in gal form, but there it is. Saeki must be hoping to find a way to do one. Clearly, Soma has upgraded a lot in his technique. With eggplant brulee as a secret ingredient mixed with his foundation of Yukihira Diner and the polish of Tootsuki studies, he made an excellent dish…

What are you doing to me, Soma…

As for Saiba, he’s just hanging out with others; pay no mind of his dish being made. That pretty much means he’s really top tier level if one isn’t worried about the process. All it was missing was a background music of evil. The dish is done and in a strange revelation, Soma wasn’t entirely wrong. He made the same dish as Soma; he is Mimasaka 2.0. Then again, perhaps Saiba is only mocking him by using the same dish and one-up him with a specialty. The only difference is the white sauce.

On one hand, you can see it as a ying-yang metaphor between the two. It’s the most fitting choice really. On the other hand, you can joke around by wondering, “If black sauce made Megumi a gal, what white sauce will do to her?” It’s best for me to avoid racial remarks. That all said this is bad news written all over it.

Not only Soma did start first, but the clear hype push for Saiba is running high. Not to mention, Soma is giving out everything he got to make sure that us audience know that he has signed a death warrant. He is about to be like Samus from Metroid once he loses. Like, “Yeah! I’m god-like at the start,” but once that knife goes, “I’m weak! No!!! N. O. O. O!!!!!”

Overall, I thought the chapter was good for the usual procedure of the battle, but my interest level has increased. The feud has gotten personal, despite Soma has little-to-no gain from revealing his identity. The dishes look delicious and it’s good to see something that I have tried before; just need to dip in a sauce now. The cliffhanger is worrisome, unless Saiba somehow loses, which would be a twist. I’m curious what direction we’re going with this. I guess the series has a lot more in its tank than some expected. If everything goes accordingly, well, the time to say goodbye to the knife is ticking. I’m going to miss you, buddy…

Kojuro and Wisteria

A spoiler post of Kojuro's Sequel story

So I finished Kojuro's second act story in 3 days and have since rereading the screenshots hahhahahahahah. I chose the fate/noble ending because I want to read his point of view ...

Boy it was so good! I mean I could be biased (SCRATCH THAT I AM INCREDIBLY BIASED WHEN IT COMES TO THIS MAN) and I do have minor quips about it but I enjoyed it sooooo much!

I’ve squeed about Hideyoshi and how much this story improve his rank in my fave list (lol, lol, lol), you can see them here.

Okay, so.

One of the important character is Kojuro story is a plant, lol.

More specifically, Wisteria, which intertwines (ha) closely with the plot.

And I’m gonna tell my journey reading his story by following up this plant, lol.

More squealing after the break and it is full of spoilers, you've been warned!

Also, anon hater(s). I do not post summaries or spoilers because I want to spoil the experience for everybody - it’s because I want to share MY journey (yes, the key word is my ME, this blog is mainly about me, surprise surprise) in this game, the same reason I started posting SLBP stuff on this blog ever since I started playing early last year (you know, BEFORE you knew of this game because you didn’t start sending me this kind of hate till recently). Get off your high horse or ride away to the sunset, look for your own happiness!

Okay, so what I love about Kojuro’s Second Act is it has got a continuity with his first act. What I don’t love so much is in some aspect, it kind feels repetitive - like, haven’t Kojuro and MC go down this road before - why hasn’t they learn anything - I mean romance tropes work for a reason but we got bored with the same formula, Voltage, try twist things up more cleverly!

But that being said I LOVE IT that the drama doesn’t feel contrived and it stemmed from an actual historical event and everything MAKES SENSE *casually side-eyeing Nobu’s Second Act Divine Ending*.

At the start of the story when they were about to move to Shiroishi they were enjoying the wisteria at Yonezawa. Kojuro remarked that when the wisteria blooms again next year, Oshu will be a better and more peaceful place.

At this point, MC has two choices to respond (lol).

A. she would enjoy wisteria viewing with Kojuro anywhere.

B. She would like to plant wisteria in Shiroishi castle too.

(choose A if you want the points)

When they moved to Shiroishi, Kojuro took a pot of wisteria with them - this wisteria is cut from the wisteria tree in Yonezawa, with the intent to plant it in Shiroishi. So the two castle will be related, geddit??? AWWWWWWW.

In the aftermath of Soma-Hideyoshi’s multiple attacks on Kozakura and Shiroishi, Kojuro holed himself in his study for days. One night MC was awakened from her sleep by the sound of him entering their chambers (they were married at this point).

Kojuro apologises for waking her up. Upon this, MC has two choices to respond:

A) You should get some rest, Milord.

B) Shall we sleep together?

(Choose A if you want the points because Voltage just loves to punish ‘selfish’ (and thirsty) MCs. I CHOSE B OF COURSE EVEN WHEN I KNEW IT TO BE WRONG FROM VOLTAGE STANDARD (and Kojuro responded with “As tempting as that may sound, my Precious Girl, we need to talk). Also, it could very well have been an innocent offer, like we can just share some sleep, can’t we??? Whose head’s in the gutter now, Voltage?)

After a brief fluffy moment Kojuro asked her to go to Kyoto, because it was not safe for her to be there and he had his plate full of defending the Date clan and that he was needed in Yonezawa, he couldn’t leave her alone undefended in Shiroishi.

(Okay but I yelled this at this point, like MC, you knew something is going on with your hubby!!! KOJURO WHY JUST STASH HER IN YONEZAWA OR SOMETHING! ALSO SCREW YOU SHE IS CAPABLE OF BEING THE LADY OF THE CASTLE)

He tousled her hair and remarked that it has grown (this is following Kojuro’s first act so here MC’s hair was shorter because her hair’d been cut off by Satake Yoshishige when he held her hostage - LOVE THIS CONTINUITY)

MC could see something was not quite right and told him that she’d be happy anywhere as long as it’s with him. Kojuro said he knew that but he had vowed to keep her safe, also he thought she’d be happy to spend some time with her mum, because they hadn’t seen each other since the wedding.

(Milord, don’t you dare twist this as such.)

MC smiled and conceded (DUN DUN DUUUUN)

Cut to a scene in Yonezawa, where Kojuro presented the full report on the battle in Kozakura and Shiroishi.

“Anywhere we look, people are submitting to Toyotomi. If we insist on opposing him, Oshu will be once again a land of war.”

Kojuro got a flack from the retainers for looking like he was implying that submitting to Hideyoshi was an option. Even Shigezane was skeptical.

Masamune kept quiet.

Later MC’s tranquil days in Kyoto were ended by Shigezane’s visit. He looks relieved when he saw her.

“Thank god, you’re here. Where’s Kojuro?”

(DUN DUN DUUUN)

“Eh, Milord is... supposed to be at Yonezawa...?”

(DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN)

Shigezane realised something was very very wrong.

“Kojuro is missing. You should come with me to Yonezawa.”

So off they go to Masamune. Shigezane was mighty worried that Kojuro has disappeared. MC too. But Masamune has just received a letter. From Hideyoshi.

The letter said that Hideyoshi has accepted the service of Kojuro, who declared himself his retainer, unattached and unmarried with no family.

(DUN DUUUN DUUUUNNN NOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEE!)

MC felt like her world turned dark. So many questions. Where was Kojuro, was he being held against his will, and why did the letter declare him as having no family, no wife?

Shigezane was so upset he went away to investigate the situation.

MC stayed at Yonezawa on Masamune’s behest. But rumours of Kojuro’s apparent treachery had the retainers restless, and it got to her.

One day at the hall, the retainers demanded she being arrested and interrogated.

Upon which Masamune released his signature brand of cold anger.

“And what of it? What she got to do with this?”

The retainers fell silent.”

“She is nothing to Kojuro. She came here as my poison taster. She became Kojuro’s retainer. Kojuro is my retainer. She is my retainer first.”

That saves MC but also broke her heart.

For her safety she lives in a safe house somewhere in the vicinity of the castle.

Shigezane came to visit, bringing with him a basket of maru-maru (”round-round”) kakki - big, round persimmons, to cheer her up. Upon receiving this MC two options when Shigezane finished making small talks (was she bored? No, Masamune lent her a lot of books, etc - so cute! but also, still sad...):

A) Is that so....

B) I am happy.

(Because Voltage likes their MC putting a brave face so as not to “inconvenient” people with their true feelings, choose B if you want the points).

Shigezane saw through her pain and didn’t press.

Next came Masamune, who apologized.

“I am sorry I had to say those things in front of them. That must hurt you.”

It did hurt MC. She kept replaying the words over and over again inside her head. Her marriage with Kojuro was a small affair known only to few, Masamune and Shigezane included. If they were to deny that, if Kojuro were to deny that, then was it all in her imagination, like it never happened?

MC knew that Masamune didn’t mean that though and upon seeing how forlorn Masamune looked, she realised that she was not the only one who was missing Kojuro. There was Masamune, and Shigezane too.

Again upon hearing Masamune’s confession, MC had two options to respond:

A) Please don’t apologise.

B) I am saddened, but I understand.

(yes, choose A for the points because Voltage only gives brownie points for not inconveniencing the hero with your true feelings, I just roll my eyes at this point, these “options” are Voltage’s chronic problem, or maybe it showed how the Japanese people unhealthy expectation/idealisation of women.)

Masamune came to ask MC to come with him to Shiroishi to tidy things up. Ad the castle is now masterless. It will be given to Masamune’s uncle, Rusu Masakage (who, along with his son Daitoshimaru, has shown up in SLBP more than once, hahahahh he deserves a hot sprite, Voltage!).

MC dreaded coming back to a place which held so much happiness and promises between her and Kojuro as a couple, but she steeled herself and said yes.

It was painful for her. Seeing her former home without his husband. She entered her bedchamber and reliving the moment Kojuro came to her that night, and all the memories. She sat on the floor and cried because everything hurts, and their stuffs, the wedding present from Yahiko (a couple’s promise books are still there).

She took the book with her and nothing else. She left the room thinking that maybe it was the last time. Has Kojuro truly abandoned her?

She went to the garden for some air and he realised something is missing...

The pot of wisteria sapling they brought over from Yonezawa. It wasn’t there.

Kojuro must have taken it with him.

Hope sprang in her chest. And still full of questions and burning with hope she dried her eyes and went over to Masamune and prostrated herself before him as his retainer and begged him to allow her to go to Kojuro to Osaka.

Okay, but my burning question in all this delicious angsty drama is, where is Bontenmaru the turtle? Why did everyone forget about the hapless turtle? I hope he’s happy somewhere!

Masamune was hesitant. Has she thought it over? She was his retainer too, does she really want to go there to find Kojuro, not knowing what will happen?

Then Kagechika dropped in, still injured but on his way to recovery and he questioned her.

“Are you prepared to never set foot in Oshu again, whatever happened, if you leave to pursue my nephew?”

“Yes.” MC is adamant.

“Why?”

Now MC got two choices.

A) Because I want to see Kojuro-sama.

B) Because I am Kojuro-sama’s wife.

and I fist pumped for once in a long time when Voltage gave me brownie points for picking B. I think Kojuro’s story is always themed around Devotion, his to Masamune more specifically. And now that spilled over to MC’s devotion as his wedded wife, to him. I can appreciate this.

Kagechika laughed and then with some effort, he prostrated himself before Masamune too, begging him on MC’s behalf.

“Masamune-sama, please let her go to Osaka to chase my selfish nephew.”

“.... Very well. You are leaving tonight.”

Before leaving, Masamune gave MC a message only for Kojuro’s ear.

“Tell him,< if that’s what you intend to do then I will protect you on the event of your return>.”

(LET ME UGLY SOB OVER THE BEAUTIFUL BOND THESE OSHU BOYS SHARE)

Okay, I didn’t expect MC to just showed up at Osaka Castle’s gate and demand to see Kojuro because she is his wife. But of course that is exactly what she did.

The soldiers laughed at her. But then MITSUNARI appeared, yay! And after staring MC down (though she met his eyes dead on) he went back to fetch... HIDEYOSHI himself.

MC had seen Hide’s face behind the screen, first in Yonezawa and again in Shiroishi so she was so surprised.

And HIde was so nice! And full of smiles! and he guided her inside the castle while making small talks!

(I WAS LIKE NO NO NO NO YOU SMILEY BASTARD, NOOOOO)

Then of course he led her into an empty room and then told her to stay there.

“Where is Kojuro-sama?”

“Hm? He’s away on business. You will stay here.”

“!”

“If you are indeed Kojuro-san’s wife, I cannot afford to be careless with you. Stay here and ask Mitsunari if you require anything.”

Yis, MC is under arrest. She was treated nicely, maids came to feed and clean her room, but Mitsunari never granted her wish to talk to Hideyoshi again (Hideyoshi has no time for you!), and she’s getting so frustrated she resolved to escape when the maid was distracted one day.

Osaka castle was huge and she got lost and then she bumped into Kyouichiro aka Goemon aka that Robin Hood-type nukenin (runaway ninja) introduced to tenka player in Tenka Tsuki.

MC thought he was one of Hide’s retainers.

“I’ve never seen your face before.”

“I’m new,” MC decided to fake nonchalance. “Hideyoshi-sama summoned me but I got lost. can you show the way?”

But before he could she heard a commotion from her pursuers and when she looked over, Gemon had vanished (lol, because he is a dorobo-san, MC!).

She ran and get caught but then she heard a familiar voice calling her name.

it was Kojuro.

(I SCREAMED AND I SCREAMED)

... and there was Hideyoshi there with him.

Kojuro’s momentary shock was immediately replaced by a stern look.

“Oh, you found her.” (no, she found him, you monkey bastard). “Now, Kojuro, this ojousan claimed to be your wife and I was surprised because you said you had none.”

“She is,” Kojuro said without hesitation, “my page.”

MC felt as if she’d been stabbed.

“Oh?”

“Would you care to hear the explanation from my own mouth?”

“Please,” Hideyoshi smiled (I wanna murder him).

So they went to this really beautiful hall in the Osaka castle. MC wa supset and shocked and in a trance. Kojuro told their story, the real history of how she became his page, and that’s it. No stories of how they became lovers and such. She was holding on to the hope that he did this to protect them (of course!) but she tried to catch Kojuro’s eyes but he refused to look at her.

“Ah so that’s the story. Your retainer loves you so much and decided to follow you here. That does sound like you.”

MC was internally screaming.

“They why don’t you stay in Kojuro’s residence?”

Kojuro was shocked.

“I gave you servants true. But since you’re page is here, it makes sense, no?”

Kojuro conceded and MC was taken to his residence in Osaka. She was still in shock and tried to make sense of everything. Replaying the scene of Kojuro saying that she was his page (and nothing more) over and over again.

She refused to think the worse but she did think about what’s going to happen is Kojuro denied her. What’s going to happen now that she’s left Oshu?

Later that night, she heard the door opened and she sled from her room, clutching the promised book like it was her life. She saw Kojuro across the hall.

(This scene was devastating because SO MUCH, SO MUCH baggage was conveyed but nothing was explained and she didn’t know where to start)

Then Kojuro passed her by and went to his room. MC grabbed his sleeve and begged to talk but he coldly dismissed her saying that he wanted to rest.

MC stood in front of his door, feeling utterly devasvated.

(can I mentioned that this chapter titled Lies and it killed meeee)

“So Kojuro-sama does not want anything to do with me anymore?”

There was no sound coming from inside, but then.

“Yes...”

Another stab to MC’s heart.

“That promise we made, was it a lie?”

“....”

“The promise to make me happy the promise to wipe my tears away that you made to my mother, was it a lie?”

“Yes.”

This happened for a few rounds, MC asking him all the sweet promises they made as lovers and IT WAS PAINFUL. STAB STAB STAB STAB, SOB SOB SOB, until, when MC thought she had no strength left anymore, Kojuro slid the door open and pulled her in and crush her in his embrace.

“Why did you come?”

“Why did you have to come?”

“Stop it.”

“Don’t say anything anymore.”

She tried to break free to look him into his eyes because in her hearts of hearts she couldn’t believe all this and she needed to catch if he’s lying but he refused to let her go. So she cried and cried.

Nothing was resolved that night. After MC was done crying he told her to get some rest. MC was screaming internally because she didn’t want to part with him, yet. She wanted to know the truth but, she was exhausted so she went.

In the morning she made him breakfast and they ate together. They didn’t talk about what happened but MC, seeing how Kojuro enjoyed her food, resolve to let things be and just... be with him.

(Okay, I was immensely frustrated but understand her at the same time. It’s like in real life marriage post fight you’re both drained and just want to share a quiet moment of truce, if not peace, together because fight is ugly but you love each other and mutually decide to deal with the elephant in the room later)

Her duty as his page in Osaka began in the morning. She tailed Kojuro the training hall and ferried messages between Kojuro and MItsunari (and met Kiyomasa in Mitsunari’s study hahahahah)

She saw how there was still an awkwardness between the Toyotomi retainers and Kojuro and but Kojuro took it in strides and there was an obvious admiration and budding camaraderie... that makes her sad because it seemed like Kojuro had forgotten all about Oshu and made Osaka his home.

She went home earlier while Kojuro was staying at Yonezawa. Alone with her thoughts, she’s going crazy so she started cleaning and sweeping the garden.

And there she found.

That potted wisteria sapling. That same one missing from Shiroishi.

(I SCREAMED AND I SCREAMED AND I SCREAMED)

It was wilting and MC immediately took it to care for the plant.

Their life regressed back to that of lord and page. But MC was holding out hope, and waiting for the right moment to tell Masamune’s message to Kojuro. And the wisteria sapling’s growing strong.

One day Kojuro caught her caring for it and his face said it all.

“I apologize for taking the matter into my own hands.”

“Don’t... I suspect as much... with the soil being damp all the time.”

Then conversations fows. Kojuro didn’t say much but MC said her guesses based on her observation and deduction Until Kojuro revealed to her that yes, he did it because he saw no other way and to buy time for the Date clan.

Mc was glad and then she conveyed Masamune’s message. Kojuro’s face lit up with a smile.

With Hideyoshi getting Kojuro, his army retreated back to the west to take care of the flooding problem and rebellion in the area. But with Kojuro working on it they’re almost done and soon they’d set sight on Oshu again and Masamune will need to make a decision.

Upon hearing this decision MC has two choices.

A) I’m sorry for tampering with your strategy.

B) I am glad to hear the explanation.

I WAS READY TO RANT IF VOLTAGE FAVOURS A BUT THANK GOD I CHOSE B THAT WAS THE POINT ANSWER, HUFF.

Kojuro apologised and told her that he should have told her, at least. but it needs to be convincing. (YA THINK??? YA NINNY! HUFFFF!)

Next MC witnessed a grand meeting where Hideyoshi is prepared to conquer teh East now that West is free from flooding.

Kojuro begged Hideyoshi to send Masamune another letter.

Kanbei (helloooooo) was skeptical of Kojuro’s request. But Hide defended him and decided to give Masamune another chance.

“But it will be the last.”

And while they’re sending the letter, they’re to march East. Kojuro would have to come too.

He decided to send MC to Kyoto again. (AGAIN???? I threw my phone) But this time is different. He looked at her in the eyes. He’d go to this campaign intending to convince Masamune not to go to war. He could be killed by, theoretically, both camps

and told her to take the potted wisteria (LOL, HAHHAHAHAHHA, THAT WISTERIA NEEDS A NAME BONTENMARUUUUUUU).

MC conceded and they parted ways. Kojuro to Oshu with the Toyotomi army and MC to Kyoto.

On the road though, MC encounters Goemon (again!) in his fancy heist outfit. She thought Hideyoshi sent him and ran away from him. He gave a chase but before anything happened or explained, a ninja came to her aid.

GENYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhh

(I SQUEED, THANK OTOME GODS KOJURO’S SEQUEL CAME OUT AFTER TSUKI IS RELEASED SO WE CAN HAVE THESE CHARAS THERE)

Genya fought Goemon for a bit before latter just decided it’s not worth it and bailed. Lol, I think the whole thing was just a misunderstanding and he just wanted to go to Osaka to rob some stuff anyway.

“Who are you?”

“Kojuro-san hired me to see you safe in Kyoto.”

But MC had another thought. She thought Goemon was sent by Hideyoshi and if Hideyoshi sent someone to get her then it must be because he didn’t trust Kojuro. She feared for him and asked Genya to take her to Kojuro in the frontline.

Genya refused ( Mendokusaaaa~~~i) but MC promised him a greater reward if he did it and anyway he wouldn’t get paid if either of them dead. So Genya took her to Kojuro.

(this part is the Noble end part from Kojuro’s POV)

He was sneaking out Toyotomi’s camp because they ave not heard from Masamune and Kojuro has exhausted all excuses to buy time so he planned to convince Masamune directly.

But he got caught.

Hideyoshi said he was disappointed with him because afterall, they were different.

“It is too unbearable for you to sever your ties with your former lord afterall.”

Kojuro kneeled and beg his leave to go to Masamune’s camp to convince him to come to Toyotomi’s fold because neither of them wanted this bloodshed, which will cost both sides dearly.

“And what makes you think they would listen to a word from a traitor’s mouth?”

When it looked like they were going to harm Kojuro. MC came galloping to the scene and thew herself in front of Kojuro.

She made an impassioned speech about Kojuro’s loyalty. And something shifted in HIdeyoshi’s face, but still...

“What guarantee is there that you would not just go there to defect back? There is no guarantee for your word nor your action.”

Upon which Kojuro looked at MC and they came to an unspoken understanding.

Then Kojuro revealed that MC had been his wife all along. And that she should serve as a willing hostage.

“If we deceived you before then let this be our apology.”

Hideyoshi was stunned... but then he decided to gamble ahead. The Date would likely have Kojuro killed for treason and that would be a shame but since he insisted then very well. MC would stay as a hostage and he would endeavor to bring Oshu to his cause.

(Okay but thought this mess MC was carrying a potted wisteria plant, lol, it’s their baby!)

Okay, I’ll leave the Oshuboys reunion part out because you need to experience that from Kojuro’s point of view (AAAHHHHHHHH THESE BOYS AND THEIR BOND)

long story short, blooshed averted.

But Kojuro didn’t come back to Oshu,

He decided to stay in Osaka and serves Oshu’s interest there, with MC.

The scene ended in their home in Osaka. Kojuro came home drenched because it was raining and MC toweled him dry and berating him and he just smiled happily and MC asked, what’s wrong because he has this look.

He said nothing.

While thinking, I truly love you, my precious girl.

And the potted wisteria grows happily in the garden~~~~

@chromehoplite ever since the attack on Soma and Agni's death I've been afraid for Finny. He has always been very protective and genuinely cared for our Ciel. Finny was the only one our Ciel turned to when he was sick during the green witch arc. Finny was the servant that questioned the identity of real Ciel when he returned posing as our Ciel. Finny has behaved a little too much like a protective big brother to our Ciel and I do think that puts a big target on his back. My big consolation is that as he is a member of the original household staff that dates back to vol. 1, if Yana does decide to "kill" him off it would make the most sense drama/plot structure wise for that to happen closer to the final arc. Or perhaps, please Yana, nothing will harm a hair on the head of this precious boys head.

I am living for this scene of Finny and Sebastian!!!! This whole scene, Sebastian's face and him reminding Finny "I told you not to jump at me with all your strength" says so much:

- Finny jumping at Sebastian is not a rare occurrence.

- Sebastian's reminder is rather gentle and patient considering this is not a rarity

- Finny feels comfortable enough with Sebastian and at the manor to seek physical comfort and reassurance

- Finny is not only still getting the hang of controling strength but also feeling and expressing emotions

Finny has really grown so much since these early days. I love that we are getting some quality Finny content in these flashbacks!!!!

Now that I got the analysis done...

Man, I saw the 2Ciel theory coming even though I don't really like it since I have seen so much of the twin/doppelganger trope lately (SMALL SPOILER FOR FANS OF THE ALIEN FRANCHISE: Two days ago, I watched Alien: Covenant and it even has some of that.) along with how often the trope is poked fun at due to its overuse. Even Gravity Falls poked fun at itself by using that trope. I also just didn't like getting involved with the theory because of all the people either strongly for/against it--I'm looking at all of you nuts out there tearing the fandom apart by acting like a bunch of immature children right now. Nevertheless, while I didn't really comment on it just for the sake of avoiding all of the needless drama, I saw it coming: There were too many clues not for it to be a strong possibility. Now that it's canon...

When the spoilers came, I just kind of rolled my eyes--again, seeing all of the immature children and psychopaths--but I just kind of quickly accepted it. It doesn't surprise me and it's not something I'm going to throw a fit over, in either sense of the term. I'm giving this a benefit of a doubt. The way I see it, Yana Toboso hasn't failed once yet to tell a good story in this manga: Even my less favorite arcs I'll say have great storytelling and plenty of research and work put into them. We're talking about the mangaka who flipped around a murder story in every insane direction possible. We're talking about the mangaka that tossed zombies on the equivalent of the Titanic and had the point where the ship split in half as being the result of Undertaker's Death Scythe. She knows fans do their share of homework with theories and analyses. She knows how to turn a story on its head. She has not let us down. (Hint, hint people: Leave her alone and let her tell her story. We don't even have all of the facts yet anyway and you're choosing to judge and berate the creator of this beauty without us even having gotten to best meat of the arc yet.)

The only issue I can find with this is that... no one... knew the difference...between the twins... I get that they're identical, but the family that they had left should know better. Lizzie caught on a couple of times, and Tanaka might've just gone with it for O!Ciel's sake, but no one else could tell them apart enough to tell which one was actually still alive? Not even shrewd Francis, who called out Sebastian for throwing a knife at a bear while her daughter was in danger?

Such a wonderful family those boys have! Well, I don't entirely accept that one issue, but to be fair there are no identical twins in my family. I don't know what it's like and J.K. Rowling even played with that with Fred and George--granted, comically. That can slide. (Anyone with identical twins in their family, please let me know if this is a real issue: I do know a pair of guys that are identical and I'd like to know to what extreme I need to spot the differences to tell them apart, because I'm not good at reading people to begin with unless they're animated.)

And I don't necessarily hate the trope either: I just feel it's something you have to work with carefully if you're going to go through with it--like so many other things because we live in a world that's seen so much in entertainment that total, 100%originality is a precious gem. Things in many stories today are usually based off stories of old. Predictability isn't fun for a story: It gets stale after a while. When I watched Gravity Falls--and this is in my particular case, because I didn't get into the theories and analyses with that because I joined the fandom really late in the game--I didn't catch the subtle hints about the big twin reveal there and it was a thing like "Oh... Oh, ok! This is happening! Please explain why this is happening!" And it was fun for me when I looked back and caught the hints. Alex Hirsch making fun of it was icing on the cake. Besides what few things the anime did give us, such as Undertaker being a Shinigami, Yana Toboso isn't like that either: She doesn't go with predictability, and so I'm going to wait for the real good stuff. Those people who genuinely were excited/surprised about 2ct, I think there's a heck of a lot more to this, so buckle up for a ride.

Why I'm saying this after writing the analysis instead of sooner... Again, the "shock" did nothing for me, as with many other people, but as I was writing it and thinking about what this means for the other characters... oh boy... I'm genuinely nervous for O!Ciel, just because of how this could possibly break him. I'm on the fence about if Soma is completely sure about the twin situation, and can't help but wonder if he's going to try to attack O!Ciel now. (Thanks, R!Ciel! Chances are, you pitted one of the few friends O!Ciel had against him!) He's an emotionally delicate thing that's been through some trauma and is not in any position to be making judgment calls! And I can't help but wonder now if this is what Undertaker is considering a good solution or his "perfect/close to perfect" Bizarre Doll. This helps nothing, you madman! You aren't saving anyone: You just made things worse! Dang it, Undertaker! Just--!

Why?!

So, like with all rollercoasters, I was hesitant to get onboard, but now that I'm on it I'm strapping in like it's the worst of the rides at Cedar Point.

AMA Transcript: Nothing Compares 2 U

@makapedia joined the AMA party to talk with us about her 2016 Resbang, Nothing Compares 2 U! Here’s some of what went down!!

Q: You wrote a good chunk of your fic set in the nineties. Was there anything that was especially hard about that?

makapedia: Writing the fic in the 90s was hard, if just because I was six when the 90s ended, so I did not remember as much as I thought I would, so I had to research a little history.

Q: What inspired you to think of this premise/AU?

makapedia: I thiiink I was talking to Madi? And spitballing ideas, as I do, at her, and it just spiralled from there. She enabled me hard.

Q: I did love your 90s references though. You mentioned some stuff and I would have flashbacks. It was all good.

makapedia: I didn't even get to write the scene I had originally envisioned for the AU, that's so weird. I wanted more Tamagotchi scenes. I wanted Maka to leave her precious child Tamagotchi in Soul's hands and he was going to take his job as caretaker Very Seriously while she was homeworking.

Q: [This] fic was an emotional ride and so empathetically written and incredibly nuanced. What was the most emotional thing for you to write? What would you do to cheer yourself up after a difficult scene?

makapedia: The most emotional thing for me to write was definitely, um, towards the end of the first portion of the fic? I gave Soul and Maka both parts of myself in this fic, and Soul really got the raw, late teens anxiety and fear of the world and his future, and it was both easy? and hard? for me to write, especially since it was through Maka's eyes, and I could not come out and say "hey, he is depressed and unmedicated and on a downward spiral" because she just didn't understand it. I would listen to Spice Girls to cheer myself up, though.

Q: Your approach to sexuality and to mental illness is amazing and hit me in the feels. Pls discuss any extra commentary youve ever wanted to discuss on these elements of your writing.

makapedia: I don't think I even went into this thinking it was going to have such commentary on sexuality? Uh, and especially the drama/throne we put sexuality on as a culture. I think the fic really evolved that way? And I think definitely even adding as much asexual commentary in it was extra. The mental illness thing was definitely planned and I wanted to make a point of showing someone who does struggle with depression/anxiety/other taking his life into his hands and getting help and still being able, as an adult, to have relations and be happy, and be a good partner. I wish I could have shown more of that at the end, but it is what it is.

Q: What is your personal favorite scene to write, or just based on how it turned out, or whatever!

makapedia: My favorite scene to write?? Maybe was towards the end, I had a lot of fun writing spiteful angry Maka kicking in the men's bathroom door and scaring the shit out of Soul. But based on how the scene turned out, i think the smut smut scene was my favorite. It was a Long fic, longer than I anticipated or planned it being, so a lot of it just melts together in my head now.

Q: Smut scenes, how do those go?

makapedia: LOL. Are you asking me how to write smut?

Q: Yes.

makapedia: I love you so much. I am Disgustingly Demisexual and super vanilla about things, and a lot of my smut focuses more on the feeling and gross headspace than the physical part? It's easier for me that way. I am a tiny ace virgin I am terrible with smut, I have people Fooled.

Q: Pls elaborate on your Very Important Decision to give Soul Batman sheets.

makapedia: Every cool guy I have in my life really aggressively loves Batman. That was it. He seemed appropriately Edgy (or False Edgy, w/e) for Soul.

Q: I really loved your characterization of the parents in this story - both Soul's and Maka's. Did you find one set of parents easier to write and if so, why??

makapedia: Oh man. I mean, they were there but also weren't, yeah? Only Soul's dad and Maka's mom made the cut, and Maka's mom is always a mixed bag for me because we do know very little about her in canon, whereas Soul's parents are always an empty canvas, for the most part. All I know about Maka's mom is she dumped Spirit for cheating and she is "like a bear" according to Maka loool so I guess I just kind of made her a very opinionated force of nature, sort of looming over and leading Maka's future, but she's hard for me to write. I could do whatever with Soul's dad and no one could tell me I was wrong. Too much power for one girl.

Q: Was there a specific 90s artifact you wanted to include that didn't make the cut?

makapedia: Black*Star in JNCO jeans.

Q: Where did the inspiration for the Liz jealousy side plot come from? Because that KILLED me lmao.

makapedia: The Liz thing was planned but also not to the degree it ended up happening? Mostly I wanted to write about Maka's insecurity, and work through her misogyny and jealousy issues and I thought it'd be interesting to have it be a close friend, I guess? But then it evolved into Soul questioning his identity in the background and coming to terms with like, realizing he was ace? Also I wanted Maka to be weird and uncomfortable and maybe even a little jealous later, when Liz had invited him to her wedding, but some of that got lost in translation.

Q: The entire leadup to and all of the Halloween party was a gift, where did the inspiration from that come from? (Soul alone with weiner dogs, bless.)

makapedia: I really, really wanted to write Maka as baby spice and it just snowballed from there. SHE WANTED TO BE SPORTY SPICE SO BADLY. Soul is me. Hides in the back room at a party and chills with tiny dogs.

Q: Why the 90s?

makapedia: I think it was because of my own nostalgia? And also feeling like I missed out on all of the turn of the century weirdness, because I WAS so young when the 90s ended and the 2000s began. It was like a time period AU but not drastic enough for me to have to really change everything and research language and clothing and trends and culture. It was recent enough but also like... long enough ago for other people my age or a little older to be like oh, man, remember the 90s, why did we all part our hair like that? The fic really did start out very silly in my heart but then everything got dark and sad.

Q: I was gonna ask, where did this idea come from? Did something really spur it on, other than your 90s nostalgia? Was the time gap thing always there? Cause the way you entered in the future and had a good portion of the story in the past was excellent and gripped my attention.

makapedia: So, originally when I was blarging to Madi about a 90s au I think I realized it couldn't just be memes, it needed a plot? And I'd always really wanted to write like a post breakup fic where the ship Gets Back Together at a wedding and then bam kablam. The "outline" for the fic is just bare bones for the fic and then some jokes I wanted to get in. Originally I'd wanted the chapters to go back and forth, 98 to 08 and such, but I ended up settling with a big 98 portion so it felt more cohesive. Pluuus I kind of like how it sets you up to hurt and then you wade through the beginning cute with just, this sense of oh god, no, what goes wrong?

Q: I loved the character dynamics between everybody everything felt very fitting like 'yep that is so how they would be.'

makapedia: ;__; I'm so glad. Bro*Star's frosted tips.

Q: I wanted to kill him when he did the freaking card trade thing.

makapedia: LOL that boy has no tact. That cloyster joke was in the outline.

Q: Did you have any characters that you sat there going 'okay what to do with you' or were all the characters falling into place nicely from your perspective? Was Black*Star's gutter mind easy to fall into or not? XD

makapedia: hhhaaaAAA, Death the Kid was mysteriously Not There in the 90s. SORRY, KIDDO. Black*Star is so easy and fun to write, but I think I'd write 90s skater DTK.

Q: Oh well, [Kid] got to make the best reference of the whole fic lol.

makapedia: He did, he got my favorite line. I think he spoke one line and it was my favorite. 70k for an I Write Sins Not Tragedies reference. The slow realization that that album came out in 2006 and therefore Existed was the best.

Q: On a scale of one to 10, how excited were you when you realized this?

makapedia: 10. 11. That joke got me through writing the last chapter.

Q: Was there a scene in particular that went a really different direction than what you expected?

makapedia: So I don't plot ahead like... as often as i should, hhhhhhaaa. So for a lot of the middle I just hit cruise control and went wherever it took me. But a lot of the stuff about virginity and like, terrible sex ed and worrying that it would hurt a ton and she'd bleed definitely weren't things I thought I'd write. I did not intend for the First Time (tm) scene to happen then and there but then... surprise dongle! Dicks out for the ship's swan song.

Q: What song did you listen to the most while writing this?

Q: Linger by The Cranberries, I think. A big Mood. And You Oughta Know, for appropriate Anger. Aaand Nothing Compares 2 U, of course. Tho I do wonder how many younger fandom bebs don't.... know that is a song title reference.

Q: What was your favourite part of the fic?

makapedia: I think... maybe the Halloween party, because Maka is such an unreliable narrator in this fic and she is so Clueless (haaaaaa, jokes) and it was the moment she Finally realized what Liz was trying to do. Also the moment where Soul realizes too was fun.

Q: Did you intend to write Liz as the actual soma fandom or was that accidental? (Complete with our adoration of Tsubaki.)

makapedia: LOL It was a little intentional, I guess, because she was Soul's close friend in the fic. But like, Maka misunderstanding everything just kept getting worse so it was a bit accidental. God I love Tsubaki. Liz has good taste. I don't super ship it a whole lot but I still wanted to try my hand at it. I wanted them to be happy and cute.

Q: What about your LEAST favorite scene!

makapedia: The breakup scene was hard for me to write and I'm still not happy with how it came out. It still feels forced in my heart, but I had to move on.

Q: WHAT'S NEXT?

makapedia: Iiiiii already have an idea of what I'm gonna do for Resbang next year so I cannot share that, buuuut I think I'm going to continue writing Not Lovers, weird mermaid AU I started recently? and probably more AUs. This is the year I write Too Many SoMa AUs, mark my words.

Q: Okay so Soul and Liz doing the do sort of killed my heart. Was that always planned?

makapedia: Hhhhaaaa that was planned ahead of time, I guess? I wanted Maka's jealousy to have some sort of basis. This tiny demi thing who can't wrap her head around sleeping with someone like that.

Q: It broke my heart but I found it so... realistic? Like I totally know people who've experienced that, and lots of people don't have their first time with their soulmate or true love or whatev so like it HURT but also... so, so true.

makapedia: Exactly, that was what I was going for. <3 Aaaand pushing my ace agenda, lol.

Q: Correct me if I read the thing wrong, but crona got adopted by Sid and Nygus??

makapedia: Iiiii do not remember. LOL, HECK. PLEASE.... HOLD.... /FRANTICALLY GOOGLES OWN FIC. YES. OKAY. Good I was like, I think I wrote that??? But then I haven't read that part in so long. I feel like people so often just throw Stein and Marie into the role of Crona's parents and I think I wanted to mix it up.

Q: I just... Crona living with Black☆Star had me in tears.

makapedia: Also that, exactly. You can bet your butt that weenie was probably Crona's dog, but Black*Star is the one who dressed it in a costume. I also had fun writing Soul and Crona bonding over Pokemon. Nerd shit. Soul, excitedly: did you hear they're making a video game? Maka is not as well versed in Pokemon as these nerds. Soul's probably laying there in that room with the weenie playing Tetris.

Q: That visual is gold.

makapedia: I also wanted to write Black*Star taking out Soul's ankles with a Skip-It. But alas.

HLITF: The Language of Flowers substory thoughts and review

this substory reinforced my belief that HLITF is one of the strongest voltage titles because it’s obviously an older substory but the quality is *chefs kiss* absolutely top notch.

this hanami special is just so sweet. it’s just innocent and showcases each instructor’s caring side and really reminds me of older voltage where substories are about genuinely caring moments between the mc and the LI and the peak of the special is seeing them grow together and their relationship develop rather than just “they had hot sex” lol. i am really fond of substories where you can see the different ways that each LI cares for their mc based on their personalities. these types of substories are the ones that i found so inspiring for writing fanfiction back in the day with just cute, short scenarios that really allow you to explore and understand the characters a little more.

goto’s chapters are sweet as usual. he can be cute and gets flustered easily, but he’s also so caring. he takes a botched plan makes it all better and really expresses to his mc that anything is special as long as they’re together. it’s all pretty usual goto being gentle and really understanding his mc’s complexes and just very naturally soothing them. goto promises to take his mc to see the cherry blossoms bloom in his hometown next year and it made me SO SOFT at how he can be a little awkward but so precious.

kaga’s chapters are so standard kaga lol. he pretends not to care but then actually gets jealous and has to punish his mc haha. personally my favourite kaga is softe kaga so i soooort of wished that this story had a slightly different premise but there’s one moment where he runs after her and i was like YESSSS HE’S WORRIED. i also found it really funny that his mc gets worried when he doesn’t put the moves on her cause he’s conditioned her to want/expect it all the time lmao. i really enjoy seeing kaga and his mc banter as well, she can be such a smartass and you know he loves it.

ishigami’s chapters are adorable in every substory, but he’s so cute in this one. i love those moments when instructors overhear the mc and her friends talking about something and play it off all cool but then uses that to plan an event. the mc, as usual, overthinks everything but naturally ishigami is his usual straightforward self and dispels her worries. my favourite moment is when she likens the meaning of their favourite type of blossom (yaezakura) to how she sees ishigami and then says she loves yaezakura so much. omg it made my heart melt seeing the mc communicate her love for ishigami in a ‘coded’ way and really express what she admires about him.

ahhh would it even be a soma chapter in a substory if we didn’t have at least one case of exhibitionism? (or a bath scene lmao i swear the writers do this on purpose) in this case it’s just an innocent cheek kiss. anyway soma’s chapters are a classic case of the mc listening to the troublesome kuronome brothers and getting all up in her head about soma’s type being mature women. naturally, the mc tries really hard to be a proactive gf and soma is just along for the ride until she tries too hard to be something she’s not and soma gently reminds her that he loves her for who she is naturally. also there’s a cute role reversal of the “sakura being a representative symbol of an instructor” motif where he buys a somei yoshino bonsai that he says reminds him of her and he can’t wait to see her blossom. soma is legit the Most Supportive instructor but he does it so subtly, like he’s always there to go along with his mc’s plans but he’ll gently nudge her in the right direction if she’s getting out of hand, so i think this is really the perfect metaphor for their relationship. if it sounds like i’m talking so much about soma, it’s bc he’s my fave and i’m really pleased with this substory. sometimes i feel like the writers don’t know what to do with soma, especially in his substories, but they really nailed it with this one imo.

omg can we just talk about how gentle shinonome is in his chapters? we get no miscommunication drama, no skirting around like we did back in some earlier substories (cough scooter cough). he just straight up asks her out to go see kanzakura together (which i’m pretty certain is bc he could tell she was missing going to see them in her hometown). but he’s just so SOFTE in this substory, letting his mc sleep on the train while holding hands because she’s tired, going along with her plans even though it involves hours of hiking, swapping backpacks because hers is heavy with lunchboxes, holding hands while hiking?!?! the date obviously doesn’t go as planned but he just goes along with it instead of teasing her. this substory is set during the time where ayumu decided that they won’t do anything until graduation, not even kiss anymore, and you can tell that they’re both having a hard time with it, so his mc likens him to the capricious kanzakura, which ayumu denies. this substory is so cute because you can tell he’s really holding himself back from what he naturally wants to do and it also reveals another truth about why he’s so tough on her as an instructor because he just wants her to graduate ASAP.

overall i would 100% recommend this substory! each chapter is quite short but they are all very gentle and enjoyable stories that i found very soothing and sweet, revealing more about the relationships between each instructor and their mc. even though we’re all stuck indoors, this substory made me feel like i was outside in the sun and cool breeze, enjoying the sakura vicariously through the mc, and it made me fall in love with each instructor and the title as a whole just a little bit more.
