Pt. 2 of my Dead Boy Detective covers inspired by teen detective novels. More info and reference photos under the cut

I’ve continued watching this series on repeat while creating the novel covers. I really didn’t think I would get through all the episodes, I often stop projects part way through. I might do another post of the covers in chronological series order, as opposed to the order I drew them in.

Style, colors, and very often the actual poses are pulled from covers featuring The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and The Three Investigators.

I don’t know if you can tell, but I struggle pulling the concentration to add details to make forests look realistic. Something about trees takes more energy than I normally have, haha.

I don’t really have a lot more to add, but thanks for all the love on the first collection, it’s been very fun.

Just an Animal Lover

I am an animal lover through and through and I always have been.  I have been told that even as a very small child I would wander up to any dog regardless of size and want to pet it and talk to it (scaring my non dog loving mother half to death).  We had cats at home from the time I was young so I have always had a spot for them in my heart, and these were not pedigree, fancy cats, these were born outside, live outside alley cats that fought for a spot next to the chimney on cold winter nights cats.  My love of cats never went away and I have had many over my lifetime, short haired, long haired, black, tiger striped tabbies, orange and white, multi colored, male/female and I’ve loved them all.

While I never owned a dog until my teenage years I think my love of dogs started with my father’s stories about the dog he owned as a young boy, his name was Rover and he was a Shepherd/Husky mix that looked a little bit wolf like from the one black and white photo that he had.  Rover was the central figure in a lot of stories I heard as a child about my Dad and his dog when they went out to the bush camp where my grandparents both worked.  The other character in those stories was a large female alley cat who appeared one day and decided to take over Rover’s dog house, the cat eventually became “Puss” and after some amount of deciding whose house it was and who was dominant the two became great friends.

As I said I have always loved dogs.  They just appealed to me, and the larger the better.  As a teenager I walked two pure bred Newfoundland show dogs just to be around them, Monty was pure black and looked like a small bear and Lady was black and white which some people refer to as a Landseer.  We got our first dog when I was 13 and so began my love affair with Border Collies.  She was the last pup to leave a farm litter and she was the runt but she was mine and I called her Lady.   Border Collies are amazing dogs, way too smart for their own good (and a lot of people), loyal to a fault and just beautiful, soulful creatures.  I have had three more since then and they are my favorite of the medium size dogs.   I lost my last border a few years ago and I still miss him every day.  I miss all the dogs I’ve had, but each one holds a special place in my heart and always will.  Most people keep photos of their children in their wallet where I used to keep pictures of my dogs, and with cell phones now you can keep photos with you all the time and my cats have more than their own space on it.

Over the years I have taken in strays and rescued others from becoming another statistic of the SPCA, most came to me young, some as young as 8 weeks and some a little older but they all stayed by my side until their last day’s and they were all loved and fussed over and spoiled, and when the time came I was with them at the very end.  Whether they went on their own across the Rainbow Bridge to where animals go, where there are no more sore joints and pain or whether I had to make a hard decision to do the right thing, I was there until the very last so that my arms were the last thing they felt as they passed on.  I felt that I owed them that.  After all, they were there for me in good times and bad times, I cried on their fur and laughed with them, and at them, and we shared early mornings and late nights.  We shared meals and treats and they were always there when I walked in the door, and as long as you have a beloved animal you are never really alone.

In my perfect word I would have no lack of funds and I would have a large farm acreage where I could take in as many cast offs and unwanted’s as I could handle. I would have too many cats and several large dogs, the bigger the  better, I would have horses who simply needed love and a place to be a horse and live out their lives in peace, I would have shaggy donkeys, and at least one highland cow just because I think they are just too cool…..I would have goats because they make great company for horses and they are just fun to watch and I would love to have a couple buffalo because they are just majestic. I would have ponds for ducks and turtles and seasonal geese and bunnies with floppy ears.

Best of all I wouldn’t have to talk to people unless they were people who came to help just because they cared and the feed people, and the farmers providing hay and straw and I would be happy with that.

I love most animals even those that people don’t understand, I LOVE wolves and the big cats with their self assured gazes, I love deer with their beautiful soft eyes, I love moose because they are just so odd looking they are downright cute.  I love raccoons and bears and damn near anything furry or fuzzy…I think I should have been a vet…..

I would take animals any day over people because animals just want to be loved and to show their love in return …they don’t play games, they don’t lie and cheat and cause trouble just because they can…not to say that I haven’t had a dog or two cause immeasurable trouble, case in point my German shepherd/Aussie cross who ate most of my hand painted walnut ornaments off my Christmas tree (he thought they were delicious-glitter, paint and all)….picking up sparkly poop in the spring made it much easier to find…..Or a border collie puppy who entertained himself with the contents of my knitting basket while I was at work and came home to find half a sweater unwound and rewound all around every chair and table leg in the living room……

Animals can learn a lot of things with love and patience and respect on a humans part….and some animals are not only monogamous but mate for life….(too bad we humans can’t say the same). My latest rescue had a rough start to his life being handed around and finally abandoned to fend for himself and when I got him he barely wanted to be touched….but now after learning that he has a forever home and that attention is not a bad thing, he has become my best buddy.  He follows me around, wants to sleep right next to me, and even wakes me up asking for attention and has learned the phrase “lay down”.  He has also learned that if he stands up with his paws on the “treat drawer” that I am a soft touch and most times will give in when he asks. He even head butts people on the shins that he decides are able to provide him with some affection, a long way for a cat who wanted to just be fed and left alone.

What can I say I am just an animal lover through and through….always have been and always will be…..
