Talk about Twain? ^^

congratulations! i have SO much to say about twain! this is going to provide the longest answer possible out of any muse you could have picked just because twain has so little in canon and i’ve developed him so much. he’s my longest standing muse ever so there is too much about my portrayal to say without somewhat of an organization so i am right now without warning implementing a new feature into these ramble asks known as Sections. so now that i’m a little more coherent. sections.

just so you know by the way i really am not joking when i say this is over 10 paragraphs long. read at your own risk. however long you think this post is i can guarantee you it is longer.

this was for a meme i did but i literally can’t answer any more of these because i’m too ashamed by how little i have for every other muse in comparison to twain.

part I: timeline.

my twain was born just after the end of (or during the final days of) the war everyone’s always talking about in canon, and it genuinely didn’t have much of a direct impact on his life. he has six siblings (five older, one younger), and of those six there were three siblings he was closest with: orion, henry, and pleasant. orion and henry were the two oldest, and given that their dad was terribly abusive and their mom was, in twain’s own words, a coward, they did most of the work to provide for the family. although twain always thought orion and henry were mean, because they always played tricks on him. pleasant was twain’s confidant; she was the older sister he could go to if he needed something to cry about.

growing up, twain was always a troublemaking kid, and there were only so many schools in or around their town that he could get expelled from before there weren’t really many options left. in the summer before he was scheduled to go to his last year of middle school, this--among a variety of things such as the abuse of his father and a general feeling of wanting to run away--caused him to formulate a plan where he would run from home, which he did shortly before school started at the age of 13. i know i have the age he ran away listed as 14, but he tends to lie and say he actually ran away a year later.

he traveled for around a year on his own, meeting a lot of different people from a lot of walks of life, before meeting a man he would come to refer to as “uncle”, possibly under the instruction of that man. i should note that my personal hc for the identity of “uncle” is natsume souseki, but this doesn’t really have any bearing on much of anything and i tend to not mention it at all in threads where “uncle” comes up because it’s not the most significant thing. anyway, “uncle” taught him how to do many things to survive on his own, including shooting guns without his ability, making fires, cooking food over an open flame, etc. he was the first real father figure twain ever had, but he and twain eventually parted ways when twain had just turned 17.

twain did a bit of freelance work afterwards--initially he sang and played guitar on the streets for pocket change, but after he killed a man trying to kidnap a girl he didn’t know, something within him clicked: he knew he wouldn’t mind doing something like this for a living, after his initial bout of panic. his career as a freelance hitman was very short-lived, but it got him enough money that for the few hits he did, he was able to stay at nice hotels and do fun things. he never really used any of it, though, too used to not having any money at all and attached to the lifestyle of not having a home to come back to. the first time he ever splurged on himself wasn’t even anything fancy; it was an olive garden.

to the man who sat himself down at the table and bought one of every food item, the place was probably less than nothing. but to twain, so used to being poor and never having enough, it seemed like more than he could have ever asked for. and so, after very little negotiation, began twain’s contract with the guild. at the time, not-yet-eighteen year old twain was the youngest member of the guild’s ranks, but he was definitely not the least talented. he rose quickly through the ranks of the organization, becoming the chief gunman/sharpshooter and a fellowcraft of the guild after just over a year of being employed.

from there, things are probably predictable, given everything that twain is. he makes friends in the guild, begins spending the ludicrous amount of money he’s being paid for his services, and generally does what’s fun for him. he discovers a love for minecraft (more on that later) and rollercoasters, and goes on travels he never would have been able to without the security of the money he’s being paid. then, after a few years of relative normalcy, the guild goes to yokohama, and you know what happens from there.

post-canon is where things begin to get a little bit foggy for me. i do technically HAVE a mainverse idea for what happens to him, but the catch is that i almost never use it. for post-canon stuff, i tend to use one of any number of verses where he’s stayed or been caught up in yokohama, because it’s just a lot easier. but my actual mainverse headcanon unaffected by roleplay relationships i want to have is this: twain goes back to america. he unintentionally gathers a bunch of lost kids and, using his travel money, he provides for them while they all travel. and that’s it. maybe in the future he becomes successful from the tales in his success diary. maybe not. who knows?

part II: traits with basis in canon.

i don’t need to repeat that we see very little of twain, but i just did anyway. because we get very few glimpses of him, there’s not much we know outside of shallow character traits. because it’ll make things easier to talk about, here are the core traits i noticed in twain that i’ve had to build off of, and then different paragraphs talking about how i’ve built off of them.

we rarely see him anything but energetic, but he does have his quiet moments.

he’s very friendly, and tends to invite people out to do fun things with him.

he is very competitive, but NOT a sore loser.

he does things to impress others. notably, one of his canon likes is “praise”.

he’s very self-confident, but not to the point where he thinks it’s impossible to beat him, as demonstrated when he’s not angry about atsushi’s victory.

he’s very flippant about taking a life.

following orders is not his top priority.

we rarely see him anything but energetic, but he does have his quiet moments. a couple of my headcanons have stemmed from this--the first is the most obvious one and that is that twain has ADHD. this didn’t come directly from his energetic attitude and rather from a combination of multiple traits, but it also happened because i was projecting. the other headcanon that’s stemmed from this combination of facts is that twain is smarter and more introspective than most people give him credit for. this has backing in the scene where he shoots at atsushi from the moby dick; instead of shooting at atsushi, he diverts his aim to the oil truck in front of him.

he’s very friendly, and tends to invite people out to do fun things with him. there are a lot of things i can talk about in this regard, but i’ll start here: twain genuinely likes to meet and make friends with new people. despite his occupation, he loves hearing others’ stories and tends to ask them about them. along with this and somewhat in tandem with the introspective part of the first hc, twain also pays a lot more attention to how people act and what they like than everyone tends to think he does. this actually has basis in my dive into the real life author mark twain, as he was notably famous for being able to pick up on people’s mannerisms, accents, and ideologies well enough to flawlessly represent them on paper (he claimed he could “read human character as well as he could read the mississippi river “).

he is very competitive, but NOT a sore loser. from this trait, i’ve sort of developed the idea that it’s very rare for twain to actually get angry, and he tends not to argue with people. he’s very quick to forgive if he knows he was in the wrong and tends to say sorry first after arguments, but at the same time, if he knows he’s right and shouldn’t be the one apologizing, he’ll cling onto that until the day he dies. also, this has spawned the smaller and less significant hc that twain likes to do competitive activities like laser tag or mini golf for fun, especially since you don’t necessarily have to know the people you’re doing those things with.

he does things to impress others. notably, one of his canon likes is “praise”. there’s not really much to say here in terms of how i’ve built on this, but one notable thing is that i attribute this trait to the lack of praise he got from his parents growing up, and how lonely he felt even when he was traveling with “uncle”. he likes when people are impressed by him because he’s impressed by himself, and when he doesn’t get the reaction he expected it puts a little bit of a damper on his confidence. temporarily.

he’s very self-confident, but not to the point where he thinks it’s impossible to beat him, as demonstrated when he’s not angry about atsushi’s victory. speaking of confidence, i actually have a whole journey laid out about twain’s journey with arrogance v. confidence and the overabundance of arrogance to make up for a lack of confidence in his earlier years. when he first ran away, he had a very troubled and hateful mindset, and outwardly portrayed that he believed himself to be the best of the best while really thinking he was terrible and a burden to his family. it was only through meeting so many people and the guidance of “uncle” in his more formative years that he began to develop a genuine sense of self confidence and, by the time he hits 20, everything good he says about himself is genuinely true. this said, he is also very aware of his flaws (for example, he definitely knows he isn’t too smart or careful or focused), but he doesn’t view them as detriments to his character and instead chooses to believe that without his flaws, he wouldn’t be himself.

he’s very flippant about taking a life. this trait actually was what caused me to think about how he took his first life. i’ll walk you a little through the things he felt when he did: he was angry, at first, then terrified, then secretly glad, and then sooner rather than later he genuinely felt nothing about it. as he’d go on to carry out hits for various people and the guild, that feeling of initial panic would become smaller and smaller every time, until the lives of the people he had to kill didn’t really matter to him. that said, it’s important to me that he still values connection and friendship with other people, so he definitely does. i believe these two traits can coexist when done properly; he values the lives of people and the stories they have to tell, but all life ends someday anyway and nothing is lost by the end of that life sooner than it would have ended otherwise.

following orders is not his top priority. this is, i think, where i get the idea that twain is a free spirit. it is this that has sort of shaped twain in every way, whether it’s getting expelled from every school in his area or going overboard on a mission where his target should have been left alive. i think his top priorities are having fun and having a good story to tell later, and while letting atsushi die wouldn’t have fallen under something fun, twain’s anticipated victory definitely would have been a good story to tell others.

part III: traits with basis in how mark twain was in real life.

an unashamed love of cats. it doesn’t come up SUPER often, but i like to remind people from time to time that my twain absolutely adores any and all cats, and had plenty of them himself before the guild arc. this comes from rl mark twain being obsessed with cats to the point where he’d have up to 19 cats at once, and would straight up rent cats while he was traveling so he never had to be without cats.

traveling. speaking of traveling! this not only comes from rl twain’s travels, but also the love for adventure displayed by huck and tom in their books. bsd twain really wouldn’t be a good adaptation of the soul of mark twain without acknowledging his travels. i think there were hints to this in the show, but definitely not as much as i would have liked. my twain is a restless soul and not only likes seeing new placed, but meeting new people.

unashamed acceptance. this actually stems both from the central ideas of several of twain’s novels as well as a quote and his love of traveling. my twain used to be a terrible person; he came from a conservative family and had no internet access beyond the one TV that they had, so it’s not like he was very informed. it was traveling and meeting so many people that caused him to develop the accepting nature he has today.

utter devotion to objects of his affection. i’m assuming because everyone reading this is probably a normal person, they DON’T know the intimate details of twain’s relationship to his wife. well i personally do. while there were undoubtedly some problems between them, there is one thing i choose to input in my relationships involving twain: he genuinely bent over backwards to get her to love him. he would do literally anything for her. and that’s a huge big part of how i portray twain in all of his relationships because i input that aspect of “willing to do anything for his partner, even if it wasn’t what he might have wanted to do beforehand, just so he can be happy with them”.

profanity and sex. i don’t know how much you know about twain’s other works that aren’t his most popular, but he was known for being very prolific and obscene in certain works, to the point where he made a joke about the word ‘damn’ being in used in substitution of the word ‘very’. for his time, he was also very obscene and made a lot of references to not only sex but other things that were considered taboo subjects among the respectable like, i kid you not, farting. because of this, my twain curses a LOT. and i can’t exactly explore this much since i myself am a minor and don’t know how far i can really go, but he is very in tune with sexuality and basically this man has a lot of sex.

comedy. to put things plain and simple, RL mark twain was basically a touring standup comedian for a good portion of his life. i attribute this fact to why twain is the funniest person in the guild and always tries to keep things light and fun.

bouts of depression. i should say this now: my twain doesn’t have depression. but, since i didn’t want to ignore the fact that the real author more than likely DID, i felt i should include my twain’s suicide attempts just before and just after leaving home, when he felt he was at his lowest.

the river. the river not only serves as a motif for twain’s most famous story, but also his actual life. if you know anything about rl mark twain, you know he was a steamboat captain for a little while. my twain definitely was not (although i have thought about giving him a steamboat captain au just for fun), but nevertheless a large portion of his initial journey away from his home took place on a river, to parallel both huckleberry finn and his actual life.

thoughts on war and humanity. since i don’t write serious things with twain a lot, it’s difficult to incorporate this into most threads with him. rl mark twain was personally affected by the civil war and did all he could to avoid fighting. he never actually enjoyed conflict. my twain was NOT affected by the war, as it was just ending when he was born, however he still has a lot of thoughts on militarization that i won’t elaborate on as i’m trying my best to keep this blog free from subjects that could genuinely affect anyone’s wellbeing. as for humanity, my twain largely shares his counterpart’s view that human beings can be very greedy and selfish, but that kindness is the greatest weapon and gift one can have. his views are very complicated so it would definitely not hurt to ask him directly about them wink wink nudge nudge.

confidence and natural magnetism. i’ve already spoken about my twain in regards to confidence, but there is some of it that is based in how mark twain in real life was--and no doubt in how tom sawyer acts in every book that features him. he was once quoted as calling himself THE american. despite all this, however, i take from rl twain his natural magnetism and ability to somehow make people like speaking to him despite that he should very much come off as arrogant; with my twain, there’s really just something about him that feels as though he wants to get to know you.

curiosity about science and new technology. because of his counterpart’s interest in science and friendship with nikola tesla, my twain has a deep love for new and exciting technology, and it’s actually because of this that i have the hc that he discovered a love for video games after having enough money to actually purchase a setup to play them. he’s really interested in things like cloning and genetic altering even if he doesn’t really understand the actual science behind them and i’m very confident that if he had watched phineas and ferb his favorite character would be dr. doof.

part IV: miscellaneous.

favorite color: orange. not only is it the color of his hair, but it’s also the color of fire and a very bright and friendly color. favorite food: italian, but he’s not a picky eater and will settle for anything. he specifically enjoys good NY style pizza, but doesn’t think chicago style pizza is bad either. favorite song: american pie by don mclean. “uncle” introduced him to it. favorite movie: it honestly depends on the day. recently he’s had a strange obsession with night at the museum. favorite game: minecraft. this is the part where i explain later: it was the first game he actually played after buying himself a good enough computer to play games and he fell deeply in love with how beautiful of a game it was. he gets very emotional about the idea that for him, minecraft is a game meant to be shared with other people and for you to showcase just what you can do. he has a hardcore world that’s been up since he was 18! favorite non-alcoholic drink: lemonade. favorite alcoholic drink: whiskey. favorite season: summer, with fall as a close second. favorite holiday: halloween. he loves to dress up. this year he says he plans to dress up as the cowboy from night at the museum, but that will probably change. favorite musical: currently, newsies. but he’s also been known to like falsettos, bonnie and clyde, and 35mm. favorite place: anywhere there’s something new to see. favorite animal: coyotes! biggest fear: as strange as it may seem, he genuinely actually doesn’t have any real fears. the only thing he’s afraid of is the kool aid man because his brothers convinced him that it was filled with the blood of kids who didn’t like kool aid and he’s never been able to shake that fear from him.

MBTI type: enfp. enneagram type: 7w6. hogwarts house: gryffindor. i actually have had thoughts before about putting him in hufflepuff or slytherin, but his unashamed bravery and willingness to run headfirst into any situation with no fears as well as his BLATANT disregard for rules makes him more of a gryffindor than anything. ilvermorny house: thunderbird. it favors adventurers, and i’m sure if you’ve gotten this far you know twain loves to adventure. patronus: honestly, probably some kind of hawk or falcon. tma entity: hard to say, but i tend to have him aligned with either the eye or the vast. the eye because he likes to watch and observe and hear others’ stories, and it’s a great way to play off of twain looking through a scope to snipe people in canon. and the vast because he’s a thrill seeker and loves the feeling of falling, and also believes that in the grand scheme of things not much is very important. PJO godly parent: hermes for sure, but i have experimented with the idea of it being apollo, dionysus, or athena. hunger games district: 7. i already have this established in the hunger games au for him that i?? just kinda have for some reason. divergent faction: dauntless. i don’t even like divergent by the way, i was just kind of trying to think of other categories i would sort twain in. i think he’d definitely be divergent tho tbh.

HOW I RUN MY BLOG

SPEED: I am incredibly slow. My blog runs on half-queue and half-live replies. So, in that case, you may get your reply within the same day or a few days after, or it’s been put into the schedule.

REPLIES: I write with a lot of people and I like to try to keep things fair. When I do my replies, I use a random number generator (here) and I do the reply that it picks for me. Sometimes I need it because I can’t pick one myself, so this is a simpler solution.

Reply schedule is as follows:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Three replies go out at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm EST. Tuesday, Thursday: Two replies go out at 10am and 2pm EST

There are no replies scheduled on weekends. If you ever want to know when your reply is coming out, I have an excel sheet for that and I’m more than willing to link it to people.

As for actual threads, I prefer to know how we’re going to start one off. If I know where to begin, then I’m fine with winging it after that but I’m also open to mid-thread plotting if either of us have an idea to go off of. Heavily plotted threads are a bit more difficult for me as I don’t always remember to take notes on them - apologies in advance!

STARTERS: Writing starters is totally fine for me! I don’t mind doing it. Just let me know where you’d like to start the thread. I can’t promise that I’ll have it within the hour but it’ll be up within the day. Also, I do have open starters (here) that any mutuals can answer at any time.

INBOX: Want to interact but you don’t know how to start? That’s fine! I have ask memes (here) and I’m always accepting them. Asks can be turned into threads at any time. Unlike replies, however, asks are queued randomly and I won’t always have an answer when it’ll come out.

SELECTIVITY: I am mutuals only. This means that I only interact with people I follow and that also follow me back. This blog is crossover, au, and duplicate / same faceclaim friendly.

WISHLIST: I have a ;;wishlist tag but I’ve not actually been using it. There’s a lot of things I’d like to explore, mainly threads with original trilogy characters. More twin threads would be great and maybe some more mainverse adventure stuff! All kinds of things, really.

HONEST NOTE: Ahh. Hm. Not sure what to put here. I do a lot better when it comes to plotting and threads if I can talk to the person I’m writing with. This goes double with ships really. I don’t always hear the tumblr IM noise (it bothers me since I have headphones on a lot and it’s loud) but I’m always on discord (ripley#0893) and I’m always up for plotting something.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THIS MUSE : Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology and a rainy day in Trussville. My mom and I decided to wait out the worst of a storm loitering and reading in a bookstore and I got hooked. That plus having played with @loptgangandi on my spy account motivated me to give Hel a spin. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF YOUR CURRENT MUSE : Just the sheer length of time there is to tel her story. Like, I have her born 1400 years ago, and she will live for many millennia more. There’s so much room for her to take on any number of identities and roles in that time. While certain aspects of her character are firmly set, the way she fits into narratives can change over time. I love that. I love her. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING : Music. Hands down. If I do not have a good tune going, I can’t write anything, whether as part of RP or elsewhere. I very much need noise going to function, but I’m very particular about the sound I surround myself with when it comes to writing. FAVORITE TYPES OF THREADS : I love things that further the game she’s running before Ragnarok. When she’s wheeling and dealing, courting alliances, keeping up her ends of bargains. Seducing humans of power with promises and further power in exchange for their immortal souls. The shadowy hand guiding Asgard towards inevitable ruin. She is not a warrior born, but a viper raised, never crass enough to attack openly, only lurking just beneath the flower. BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN REGARDS TO YOUR CURRENT MUSE : She’s so repressed. There’s so little I can do with her and outward emotions because she has so sealed off her negative emotions and tried to reimagine herself as a blank slate. It’s hell trying to work around, trying to urge an actual, ironically human reaction out of her in her mainverse.

The Flash was in critical condition. And Bruce always had contingency plans, and this one, this strategy, only ever served as a last resort. He needed to go back exactly 20 hours, needed to find an antidote or prevent the toxin from entering Wally’s body, and for once - they were running out of time.

And Bruce had resolved, a long time ago, to never run out of time, not when the Flash was involved. Which brought him here, about to do something stupid and reckless and irresponsible. Alfred said nothing, and the other members had no idea. And Wally? Wally had looked at Bruce with a type of resignation, a type of defeat, that asked for Bruce - for Bruce to merely let go.

Because Wally saw what happened in the Justice Lords universe. And Wally knew, Wally knew that Bruce, Bruce would never let go.

And this? This was his final move.

Bruce is zapped through time, through space, and loses balance when the world stops moving, stumbling slightly and throwing out a hand to catch his balance on a nearby tree. A tree? A quick glance around told Bruce that he was at a park. Where? The city looked familiar. Central? No...

Keystone. Huh. Keystone city? That’s not right...

Searching his surroundings, and realizing that quite a few people were alarmed at the sudden presence of the caped crusader in the middle of a park, in the middle of the day, Bruce frowned. Something was wrong. Something was off.

Something was...

A small redhead, seated in the sandbox, unattended, looking up at Bruce with bright green eyes. Bright green eyes that Bruce would recognize anywhere. Bright green eyes that...

Shit. He’d gone back 20 years.

VERSES RUNDOWN

back to life after bein underground ; gotta figure my life out | MAIN v

DEFAULT. this verse is the default of the blog. the mainverse is post death and his resurrection that happened in the miles morales: ultimate spiderman line. he’s returned to being spiderman after taking off with mary jane watson to places unknown after miles’ disappearance into the main marvel universe ( 616 ). his age is defaulted around 16 - 21, it’ll depend on thread, who he interacts with, etc.

notes: most characters of this home universe or those we plot to be in this universe will know what his secret identity is due to the reveal upon his death.

you win and you die and the end doesn’t even bring sweet resolution | MAIN v II

ITSV VERSE / SECONDARY DEFAULT. adapting some of the comic lore into 1610 movie verse ; so in doing so i’m adding him as a verse to my blog which DOES follow blog canon then pulls comic canon to the root. in doing so, the spider - bite he received when he was 14 kept him from staying dead like comic canon had done. he was legally dead and from public eye for just over SIX MONTHS to find out his identity was known by the public and a MUCH YOUNGER spider - man was doing his old job. he finds him, considering he had met him before he had died unlike comic canon and wanted to help train him some more.

its something to say that being a teen was easier. girls ; school and powers ; not death | TEEN v

pretty straightforward. follows peter’s early career as spider-man up all the way til his death days after his 16th birthday. pretty standard.

blackmailed & broken was when the spider was bought | SINISTER SIX v

being manipulated and blackmailed by norman osborn, peter parker ends up being part of the sinister six and assist in deeds he would usually stop. the “menace” has truly become one but not out of his wishes. his family, friends -- harry -- are at stake if he doesn’t comply.

second to this is post sinister six, where spider - man’s a fugitive or leaving the raft. all depends what’s been plotted.

incomplete. something's off. you know deep down what it is. your a | clone v

peter parker has returned . . but is still buried. upon waking up in atlanta he found on computers that were left behind that he was made from the dna of peter parker upon his death. he was number #60 of failures. questions remained in who did this to him and why. he has more questions than answers, full memories of the original’s life, slightly in denial, and . . no idea where to go from here.

things are weird. doesn't smell super right. its home but .. kinda hellish perhaps | displacement: mcu / tasm

I’M CHANGING THINGS UP.

Hello, hello! I’m sure y’all are sick of all my ooc at this point but I’m hoping this will be my last one for a while, because I think I’ve finally figured out what’s been making me feel unenthusiastic about rp.

I’ve been treating roleplaying as though I’m writing a novel. I’ve tried to plan out Lyra’s story so rigidly that it’s been hard to roleplay with her. Though I never really talked about the second two in any great detail on this blog, for a while I’ve been working on three verses behind the scenes that would essentially act as Lyra’s mainverses. The first was obviously her ‘Champ In-training’ verse which is the one I’ve been paying the most attention to. But the second was a kind of ‘Runaway’ verse that took placed during the events of SuMo where she left Japan both to escape and pursue a group of Rockets. The third was the verse where she became an adult and truth be told I didn’t really get any farther than that.

But it was just too much work to try and coordinate all of these at once. I was trying to shove threads all over Lyra’s timeline which made it difficult to rp as her because I wasn’t sure how much she would have changed between verses. And it was just limiting the types of plots I could write and numbers of partners I could interact with. Right now I don’t need to focus on anything further than her ‘Champ In-training’ verse.

Right now, I just want to focus on developing Lyra in said verse. I think the way I’m writing her is currently a bit one-dimensional and I want her to become a more complex, nuanced character. I want to start showing more of her fears and flaws and insecurities. I love her positive energy but I don’t want that to be all there is to her. And I hope that showing the different faucets of her character and that opening her up to a more diverse range of threads and characters will mean she’s a better character when the time comes that I decide that I want to move beyond her current main verse. And I’ll have a much better idea of what that next verse might focus on.

WHAT’S YOUR OTP FOR YOUR MUSE?: My heart has grown weak to Blackmadhi over the course of many many threads developing their dynamic with @karmicbutterfly. There’s a lot of stuff in their pasts where I feel like... the other could relate and understand in a way most people couldn’t, but also they’re distant enough from the other’s trauma that their relationship isn’t built upon and defined by The Sad Things. Like, right now in mainverse their budding relationship has been about food nerdery, motorcycle rides, and bird selfies. But when the more serious shit comes up, I feel like they’d be able to support each other pretty well. ALL OF THIS SAID, past-Phantomquill is a fascinating and tragic dynamic to me. I in no way think of it as endgame--really the best thing for BOTH of them is to part ways and never speak to each other again. But tbh the threads I’ve worked on with @more-real-than-life are just. Something I’m really proud of. The toxic codependency, the conflicted emotions (or insistence upon a lack of emotions), the guilt and the shame and the confusion and the anger, it’s all just--it’s good shit, y’all. Is real good shit.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO RP WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?: Pretty much everything except smut, tbh. I am happy to write fanfic and drabbles, and I’m also totally cool with fading to black and picking up after the do has been done, buuuuut writing full-on porn with folks kinda gets awkward when you’re married.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?: Ehh. I feel like within the realm of fiction, I don’t really care as much. As long as both characters are legal adults (or appropriately aged up within the ship-focused work), s’all good.

Beyond that, like, if we’ve been writing for a few threads and the chemistry seems to be there, totally let me know you ship it! Preferably also before any advances are made so we can talk it out.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU LIKE TO SHIP?: SHIPPING IS FUN! I’m all about the shipping.

ARE YOU MULTISHIP?: You betcha! I consider all ships AU, though the only real exception I have to this is that past Phantomquill is part of my personal mainverse canon for Simon. Because it’s more interesting that way.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHIP IN YOUR CURRENT FANDOM?: If we’re talking Ace Attorney, I kind of ship like everybody with everybody, but Blackmadhi is probably number one at the moment. Also definitely Narumitsu, Klapollo, Gumworth, KlavDar, Klavquill, and Junithena. Also I think Trupearl would be adorable.

ime rping off tumblr (ffnet forums) i was 99% of the time playing OCs, occasionally canons were up for grabs but people didn’t really go for them. very similar experience to yours. ime rping ON tumblr, i remember a much more like, strict-seeming application process. i also remember it being mostly AUs of canon rather than same canon but OCs. it was also messier/moe difficult to organize than on a forum.

Yeah in all my years of RP I’ve encountered the option to RP as a canon character (at least as your primary character--in WAAPT we tended to pass around canon NPCs and occasionally someone would ‘adopt’ one and became the go-to person when you needed that character for a scene) maybe... once? And it’s a hazy memory bc I didn’t stick around that forum very long.

I thought maybe it was because I mostly stuck to Warriors games, which IMO is ideal for RPing bc it’s basically just a system that you can easily plug OCs into, and also stuff not based on any fandom at all (esp. horsey type stuff bc.... deep down im a furry at heart). It was also almost entirely AU stuff (either ‘canon happened but a shitload of time ago’ or ‘were completely ignoring canon it never existed’). And honestly WAAPT sprouted enough AUs of itself that whether or not mainverse WAAPT can be technically called ‘canon’ is pretty much irrelevant.

And IME there wasn’t usually an ‘application’ for characters (except, in rare occasions, on some sites that catered exclusively towards more ‘advanced’ writers, with higher expectations for how well you could write and higher required word counts per post, and sometimes higher expectations for verisimilitude--I once got told by a mod that I had to redo my character bc the genetics didnt make sense for her made-up family. I politely told them I didn’t think the site was for me and gtf outta there), but there would be some sort of a structured character creation form, usually in its own section of the forum, and usually a mod had to give the character a go-ahead, with qualifications that varied depending on the site. I've been a mod on a handful of sites and they ranged from ‘did you fill out every section and approximately meet the required word count for each’ to ‘does your character have a good balance of flaws vs. positive traits, do they sound like a character that will do nothing but cause problems for everyone, do they have a plausible history, do you the player seem to have a grasp on the tone we’re aiming for, etc.’. Character creation forms were honestly nice just to be able to have a place to keep track of info abt the character (I knew people who updated them constantly with history, relationships, appearance changes, etc. as things happened in-RP) and to be able to move them around so people could tell, say, how many cats were in FernClan or w/e.

I haven’t actually seen a full RP thread on Tumblr but I cannot fathom how they organize them. Tumblr is a nightmare for having a coherent conversation outside of directly messaging someone. Most of my RP experience was on either freewebs or proboards (bc thats where the warriors forums were) with the ability to create threads in different sections of the forum designated for different geographical areas, and then any number of people could post in them and a goddamn coherent scene could take place (sometimes if there was a thread with a ton of people, like to continue with my warriors examples in a big battle or a Gathering thread, we would institute rules like a posting order, or a requirement for how many posts you had to wait before you could go again, but that wasnt usually necessary and in smaller threads was sometimes used just as a courtesy). Even RPing on the TV Tropes forums (like WAAPT, or a handful of other almost entirely Pokemon-based RPs I was in and still regard fondly) where the actual RP was confined to one thread, at least everyone was looking at the same goddamn thread. You could still have twenty something people all posting in the same thread and they wouldn’t all be potentially seeing a different version. Do Tumblr RPers just only do one-on-one?? How do they manage. Tumblr is a terrible platform.

50 - What’s something you like about FCs/Play-Bys?

I just really like knowing how people see their characters! It’s especially great with OCs or canons who are faceless – and I love re-imagined versions of canon characters, too. FCs can be a great way to add little quirks and characteristics to your muse as well. I know there are certain physical ticks and tells I headcanon Miles as having just from watching and iconing Oscar’s interviews / movies. FCs just add a layer of realism to fictional characters, I think.

52 - What’s a trope or plot you think is overdone in roleplay?

Not necessarily something I think is overdone, just something I’m not personally all that into – high school and college AUs. I’m aware it’s likely an unpopular opinion, but I just don’t find them that interesting? I’m not a huge fan of overly ‘mundane’ AUs in general. My real life is pretty boring as it is, I’d rather be writing about more interesting stuff lol

54 - What’s a trope or plot you love but you’ve never gotten to roleplay or never gotten to roleplay in completion?

I feel like I don’t often get to do a lot with my AUs – recent influx of SW threads nonwithstanding. I recognize that Outlast isn’t a super well known thing outside of the community, and it can be tricky to navigate everything going on in my mainverse. And since there aren’t a lot of Outlast blogs left – there’s like two active ones and I’m one of them lol – I tend to rely mostly on AUs and crossovers to interact with the non-Outlast people. But at the same time I feel like I don’t do a ton of character development in my AU verses, and that’s something I feel like I need to be better at and want to explore a lot more!

56 - How did you learn about roleplaying? How did you get started roleplaying yourself?

I was part of a Warrior Cats forum back when I was in middleschool, and there was a section of the boards dedicated to roleplaying. I didn’t quite have the confidence for fic writing back then, but I was super intrigued by the idea of writing and developing stories and characters with other people. There were different message board threads for different rp groups, each centered around a certain kind of plot. I don’t remember if I started with a canon character (I remember playing either Jayfeather or Cinderpelt at some point) or an OC – which would have been Mosspath, after my screen name (taken from a ‘what’s your Warrior name?’ generator, which is also the reason why I go by Moss now). And I loved it! The forum wasn’t heavy on rp so my experiences were short lived, but I met a few people who I was friends with for a number of years after I left the boards. A lot of people on the site had deviantart accounts, which introduced me to this big gigantic world of fan content – which eventually lead me to tumblr. I saw rp communities in fandom tags, and I started my first rp blog within a couple months of making my personal blog back in 2012. And here I am!

58 - What’s your newest roleplay character?

I started Quentin’s blog back in July over at @illusiione – been taking an unexpectedly lengthy hiatus, but that’s the newest blog I have.

60 - Who’s a roleplayer (or writer) you think you have learned a lot from?

Answered! But to expand on the non-rp aspect of it: I tend to base some of my stylistic choices off of books I’ve recently read. That can be a good thing and a bad thing, but if you’re ever wondering why my writing ‘voice’ sounds different from how it usually does, it’s probably because I’m in the middle of reading a new book lol. I like authors who get very descriptive without being super dialogue-heavy, and I think that comes across in my writing often. I often catch myself writing big long paragraphs and then realizing I haven’t given my partner anything to respond to because Miles hasn’t actually said anything. I really love Peter S. Beagle’s writing, as one specific author who comes to mind. Every time I re-read The Last Unicorn (which is at least once or twice a year) I find myself inspired in how I’m writing my rp threads.
