So often parent & child relationships in media are about a child wanting to break free from their parent(s) and gain independence, but honestly, I have literally never related to that as someone who just wanted my parents, but was constantly dismissed by them, because I was "old enough now".

So, it's so refreshing to have a portrayal of parent & child relationship where it's especially the child (despite being on the edge of adulthood) who's driven by codependency and still clinging to their parent who's trying to build a life besides his kid (emphasis on besides, Stolas literally NEVER intented Octavia to be excluded from any life he was building away from his abusive ex-wife and I will never blame Stolas for struggling to include her considering his godawful situation where he was literally sabotaged).

(Is "besides" the right word for this? My English is derping a lot today... I just hope you get what I mean.)

last night i was on the phone with my 74 year old mother in gaza trying to explain how tumblr is helping us stay alive and she cuts me off frustrated “tumblr? what even is that? how are these people with strange names and pictures gonna help when we don’t have bread? the children are hungry. this is genocide.” so i said mama these people are real they’re donating so we can survive and she scoffed “show me one of them actually helping” so i opened tumblr and read a message “mama a friend sent us $20 yesterday that’s how we bought two loaves of bread yesterday and another one shared our story with their friends” silence then she sighed “well god bless them even if their names and pictures are ridiculous” then she goes “thank you to everyone out there you’re the reason we’re still alive and please continue donating and sharing! your support truly makes a difference”.

I honestly love Octavia's arc so much, as someone who also grew up believing my parents didn't truly love me and I was just an obligation as their daughter (and still struggle with these feelings well into adulthood).

I recently found back old art I made in my late teens literally titled "I know I'm the daughter you never wanted" and like... I'm not joking when I say Octavia reminds me so much of who I was as a teenager and I'm positive she would've been my nr. 1 fave character if HB already existed when I was still a teenager (tbf she's still my 3rd fave even now).

Though my situation isn't exactly the same and I'll never claim to know what it's like to have (divorced) parents who hate each other, because I was fortunate enough to grow up with happily married parents, but I do am in a similiar situation of watching my dad fall in love with a new woman after my mother's passing a few years ago.

Even in a much healthier envirement with my dad trying his best to properly introduce her into my life and me being much more mature than I was in my teens... it's still hard. So, I totally understand Octavia struggling even more with the complicated situation surrounding something that's already complicated by nature while being a sheltered teenager.

Abandonment issues might be hard to understand for people who don't struggle with it, they don't have to make sense given all the information of a situation, it's much more nuanced than that. Even to the point of being the one to cut off someone before they get a chance to abandon you (again).
