Sleep Token is being turned into a brand rather than a band and being commercialised to a point where it will harm them more than help them

An opinion on there being too much ST merch

Befofe starting this, i want to clear up a few things

I am aware that Vessel and ii probably have very little responsibility/say in this and it's the management/rca who is doing this

Yes, i am a fan and i support them. However, it is unhealthy and not good to blindly support every decision and action of your favourite artist, person etc without questioning them and holding them accountable

I know that earning money with music in times of streaming is hard/impossible but that does not justify those moves of tryihg to get as much money as possible out of them

This also applies to other bands, but the extent to which this aapplies to ST is extreme compared to others

We are one week into this year and there has already been a new merch drop. After 6 days. You know when the last one was? Less than a month ago. Same merch shop (US). The items? Some of them questionable (flannels??). The leather jacket? Insane (not in a good way). It looks okay but you could make one yourself and make it look way cooler and get it for less money as one of my tumblr moots said.

I remember last year up until July/August it kind of was a running joke in the fandom about the emails with obtain and how we're too broke to obtain, but now? This is not a joke anymore. Ever since last year we have gotten emails ALMOST EVERY MONTH, sometimes even several times a month about new merch releases.

Yes, there are different stores worldwide, but we live in a time of international shipping. And even for one store it's lots of releases. Plus then there's all the licensed products shops like Hot Topic, Impericon, EMP and whatever their local equivalents are, who also constantly release more merch.

What's even worse: a lot of those things are either a shitty quality (if i remember right, one of the hoodies or tshirts from the EU tour 2024 had the print peeling off after one wash) and/or really bland. Where is the cool art, the thing that makes these items special? I got a tshirt from the German Rituals 2023 with this sick artwork on it that i cherish more than anything. But compared to that most tour merch of the more recent tours has been nothing special.

Most of them just have the logo on it and it reminds me of any ither fashion brand. There's only so many jumpers and t-hsirts and sweatshirts with the logo that a person needs and the constant release of new but actually the same stuff is creating this insane overconsumption which harms fans' bank accounts and the environment and is straight up boring. There's nothing about them that makes them special and unique and cool. It feels like at this point it is a contest of how many ST logos can they plaster on an item before it looks ridiculous (on the leather jacket i counted at least four, three of them massive).

Which brings me to the next point. People just slap on a ST logo because the band is so hyped and to make money off it or get more clicks, even if it is only remotely related to them. I understand that in today's world you need to use buzzwords to make people pay attention, but with ST it has reached the most ridiculous level. The air of anticipation some magazines or brands build around some upcoming stuff with words like Worship and whatever, which everyone connects to ST, just to reveal a mid product or result is just horrible and will eventually make it less effective which can harm the band in the long run if they can't build up excitement for new releases as much as they could because everyone is 'burnt out' because it's been overused.

Overall, this insane amount of merch and using ST to sell anything or get clicks is not okay. The fan base is so dedicated and loyal and we deserve better than to be - for the lack of a better word - exploited like this just because we like and support an artist. Prices for everything have been rising for years and it's hard for a lot of us financially. We spend so much money on concerts already and then the ton of merch and everything on top is just too much. ST as a brand is used to exploit fans which is not how you should treat your fans (again want to emphasise that this is mostly on management and label, not Vessel)

You might think 'But you don't have to go to concerts or buy their merch'. That's right, you don't. But concerts are kind of the thing when you're a fan of a band, and you want to support your fave band abd wear merch and show that you like them. However, the merch and everything is limited and posed in a way that creates FOMO and everyone is always drilled to Consume and Obtain (yes that's how capitalism works and that is not good in this situation because it harms us fans so much.) I can't deny I've given in to this as well twice during the EU shows and i am now left with an underwhelming sweatshirt and a hat that i never really needed and probably wouldn't have bought if i hadn't been in this mindset so much.

'Oh but i want to support Vessel and the band.' Yes, merch does help out artists, especially in times of streaming. But how much do you think they make? Merch is using little to no lyrics or song related things that the band could earn money off due to copyright. And i don't know who owns the right to the logo (i did some research and found someone in management with three trademarks on something ST related but it never specified if that applies to just the name or the logo or the music or whatever - it was not Vessel though). Who knows how much is going to management and the label and how much the band actually earns. Right now it feels like the management and label want to make as much money possible from them for their own gain. As an alternative to support them, start buying their albums and vinyls so they earn more money off their songs.

So, what do i want? Obviously i don't want fans to stop buying merch because it does help artists to some degree. However, I want less merch releases, one or maximum two a year per merch store (so AUS, US and UK/EU). We can have a few simple designs with the logo on it, but i also want some cool pieces with art or something else that makes them special. I know artists are expensive and stuff, but that's why you make less items but higher quality. Make them available in larger quantities so that more people can buy them and they will still get their money. Plus you always have extra tour merch, which is another extra release. Make the merch special again and make it mean something to people instead of just being another logo like a fashion brand.

If they continue like this fans will eventually be unable to afford stuff, people will turn away from merch because they realise it's all the same, and the effect of using ST as a brand/connection simply to sell stuff will harm their reputation (it already is). Whoever is responsible for this merch insanity needs to put a stop to it. Please!

This is just my opinion. Disagree if you want to. Some things, especially the effects of the situation, are portrayed slightly exaggerated, but this is how it makes me feel and I truly believe this is not a great situation we're in right now with the merch.

Okay so… as much as I’d love to say it starts with something fun like abduction or being hunted through the back halls of some concrete building, it doesn’t. 

It starts with a consent discussion, funnily enough. 

Me going pink, squirming in my seat, finding it hard not to giggle nervously or crack jokes to break the awkward tension as I say yes to item after item, or nod and chew my lip when words fail me. Ears gone pink with a blush as I shrug and regretfully say no to a couple things, but you assure me it’s okay to have boundaries and we don’t need to do everything, and if I really want to expand my horizons that can happen on a different meeting, it doesn’t have to be right now, right at this time; focus on what feels good and is the most exciting, what I’m most eager to try. 

Going through the list feels like foreplay. 

“Impact?”

“Dying for it,” I admit. 

“Snuff’s not on the list, puppy, that’s fiction-only,” you joke, and I snort like an idiot. “What kind of impact?”

“Limited use of caning. I don’t mind a gentler cane, a few strikes here or there, but not like… bloodied marks from it, y’know?” Ears burn; I’m a little embarrassed to say no to blood when I like the aesthetics of it so much. 

But you’re patient, nonjudgmental. “That’s cool, there’s plenty that can be done without breaking skin.” 

Swear to god, that sounds like a promise and it goes straight to my cunt. “Oh, claws too. Whartenberg wheels. And I also like knives,” I volunteer, on that same line of thought. “Not like cutting, I’m still kinda a wuss about that, but I wouldn’t mind, um. Like… the threat of it.”

Your lips turn up, then press flat, like you’re hiding your smile. “You want me to hold a knife to your throat while I fuck you?”

Immediately my throat feels tight, eyes going wide as I just blink for a second, blue screening as my insides flutter. “Hhh–I uh–” I choke on the words, coughing. 

“Didn’t realize I could choke you without a hand around your neck,” you tease. 

“I uh– UHM.” The blush burns so hot across my skin, I feel like I’m melting a little, shifting in my seat as my toes curl. 

“You’re adorable,” you tease as I quickly place cooler hands over my heated face. “God, I am so curious if I can get you nonverbal.”

“You can,” I mutter from under my hands, hiding from the attention I was so desperate for. “It’s actually super easy,” I mumble, “I lose like 90% of my vocabulary when I’m being fucked.”

Your hand slides up my back to bury itself in my hair and my breath catches, a little whimper as I shiver and goosebumps break out all over my skin. “Well, we’ll see if we can hit that before you even see what I’m packing, huh?” 

“Ihhh-” Already my words are failing. I feel squirmy and pathetic and so fucking wound up right now, hands pressed to my thighs and flexing and bunching like I can get the nerves out. My whole body is shaking, I want this so bad. “Uhmm, mhm,” I manage, squeakily. “I– uh huh.” Really hard to talk with your hand twisting in my hair. Instead, little whines keep catching in my throat as I try not to come across like the desperate little slut I am at the moment. 

“Christ, you’re gonna be fun,” you murmur, tightening and loosening your grip in my hair as I shiver.

I’m down for anything at the moment, kinda want to get wrestled down and have my clothes ripped off and just get rutted into the floor, if I’m honest, but that’s all a messy slideshow in my brain as I tremble and pant and hope you’ll keep making moves. 

“...We should finish this list.” 

Your hand leaves my hair and I’m so fucking disappointed, a little whine making you smirk as you look back down at the paper we’ve been going through. It’s good to have limits and wants in place, I know that, but godddd I’m impatient. Well. Impatient, in theory. I love how much this is dragging out; every little shift in my seat feels slick. 

I give more yeses, a few more nos, and as the hair pulling wears off I get chattier, start to offer answers you didn’t ask for (“I like to struggle,” and “can’t fault a bit of wrassling,” and “my gag reflex could use work but I love sucking fingers,” and “I just like to make my partner laugh, I don’t care if it’s at me– if it’s at me, it’s with me, really,” and on and on and on). 

At long last, we’ve reached the end of the list. “And you know your safewords?”

“Traffic light system, right? All green.”

“Even with your ‘red tags’?” 

“I just won’t talk about the color of the tags,” I smile, “I’ll be too busy wanting them. But I can also just say safeword if you’re worried about it.”

“Deal. Are we saying no means no?” 

“I don’t say ‘no’ as often as I’d say ‘don’t,’ and I think the appropriate response is probably to tease me a bit and then ask for a color, if I’m honest.”

“You’re doing my job for me.”

“I’ve thought about this a lot.”

“Sick little puppy.”

The blush is back, “A bit,” I admit. “Juuuust a bit.”

It's the last day of 2024 and I just want to say thank you to everyone, all of my family, friends/moots, acquaintances, followers, anyone who has liked my posts, etc

This year has been really difficult and I don't think I would be so happy without you guys, and I really really appreciate everything, more than you could know.

I want to give a special thank you to my biggest inspirations, @bluepr1ntyy, @problems-exe, @yeloenk, @shynetyme06, @t3m1, and my discord friends, you guys are seriously the best and have inspired me so much. December Writing Challenge: Day 2

This one's a little late! In my defense, I was studying for an exam earlier and struggling with formatting on ao3, but it works now!

Full story below the cut! (Fonts aren't right, unfortunately.)

It’s not like Frisk hasn’t come across this exact scenario before - Papyrus, pressed up against the wall, frozen in the act of sneaking around the house. Usually he wasn’t even doing anything particularly sneaky; just training his skills as an ex-soon-to-be-but-never-will-now-because-they-disbanded royal guard… allegedly, as Undyne swore that she never taught him to do this and has no idea where he learned it from.

(Sans placed his bets on the hat man. Undyne doubted the veracity of the hat man’s existence. Toriel placed her bets on the hat man as well. Undyne furiously listed several reasons why there is no way that the hat man taught Papyrus how to sneak, not least of which because Papyrus was always caught and she had never seen nor heard of this mystery hat man. Sans pointed out that’s why Papyrus was still in training, and besides, he’d said, grinning, you can’t know if you’ve caught him every time if a successful sneak necessarily means that he wasn’t caught. Only the hat man could know the truth. Alphys sheepishly also placed her bets on the hat man. A dog got involved. As did fire, somehow. Undyne broke a pool table in half. Anyways.)

The point was, Papyrus pressing himself against a wall and doing his best impression of a startled marmot was nothing unusual, and ordinarily, Frisk would walk right by and pretend they didn’t see him.

But Papyrus had a paper bag in his arms, and a bag with something inside it that Frisk didn’t know about was something Frisk could not resist.

“Whatcha got, Papyrus?”

The skeleton sweat a little nervously, eyes darting from side-to-side.

“I AM NOT PAPYRUS! I AM, AH, SIMPLY HIS VERY COOL AND HANDSOME LOOK-ALIKE!!! NOT AS COOL AS HE, OF COURSE! BUT YES! NO RELATION AT ALL!!”

“You numbskull,” Flowey muttered from where he was wrapped around Frisk’s arm, playing on their game console. Frisk jostled him, making him miss his last jump.

“Don’t be mean.”

The game over screen flashed. Flowey hissed at them.

“Um…” Frisk eyed the bag as Papyrus continued to look all around the room like he was about to make a mad dash getaway.

“Um… Mr. Not-Papyrus?”

“HM? AH, YES!!”

“Um, uh, what’s in the bag?”

“W-WHAT BAG?”

“That bag,” said Frisk, pointing.

“OH!!! THAT BAG! YES!! …IT’S A SECRET!!!”

“Aw,” Frisk mumbled, downcast and pouting.

Papyrus immediately started sweating more, looking very conflicted.

“HM… WELL…”

He crouched down in front of Frisk and whispered to them conspiratorially.

“…I COULD USE AN ACCOMPLICE!”

“Really?” they asked, brightening.

“BUT!!!” he put one gloved finger up. “THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL ONLY SHARE THIS SECRET IF YOU, HUMAN FRISK, SWEAR TO KEEP IT!”

“Oh, are you Papyrus again?”

“ERM. YES.”

“That’s good,” Frisk said, reaching out for the bag. “I like Papyrus. He’s cooler.”

“FRISK…!!! WELL, OF COURSE, I AM THE COOLEST, BUT!!! MY COOL FRIEND LIKES ME BETTER THAN SLIGHTLY LESS COOL AND HANDSOME NOT-PAPYRUS…!” he looked a little teary.

Frisk nodded, but their attention was mainly focused on controlling their grabby hands, inches away from the mystery items in the bag.

Papyrus made to hold it out then paused.

“YOU DIDN’T ANSWER BEFORE! YOU SWEAR NOT TO TELL?”

“I swear!”

“I don’t.”

“OH! FLOWEY!!! I DID NOT KNOW YOU WERE LISTENING!”

“I… I’m right here,” Flowey said, outraged. “How could I not?”

“WELL, I SUPPOSE IT IS HARD NOT TO HAVE YOUR INTEREST PIQUED BY SUCH A MYSTERY…”

“I’m not interested!” Flowey protested. “I just happen to be right here and have-”

Flowey cut himself off, as he abruptly realized he did not, in fact, have ears, and thus, his point was moot.

Frisk’s grabby hands won out, and they tugged a bit at Papyrus’ scarf.

“OH!!! RIGHT! AHEM!!! DRUMROLL, PLEASE!”

Frisk rolled a beat on their knees.

“BEHOLD!!!”

Papyrus opened the bag with a flourish. Frisk peered inside.

Cooking supplies? No, baking! And… was that…?

“Butterscotch!” they exclaimed delightedly. “You’re making mom’s pie recipe?”

“INDEED! I AM MAKING IT FOR TORIEL HERSELF!”

“Oh, she’ll like that!”

“I AM ALREADY A MAGNIFICENT CHEF! AND SINCE I HAVE MASTERED THE ART OF SPAGHETTI-MAKING, BAKING WILL BE A PIECE OF CAKE!!”

“Mm-hm!”

“AND!!! ONCE I HAVE THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED HER WITH MY BAKING EXPERTISE, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL BE APPOINTED OFFICIAL GUARD OF THE KITCHEN!!!”

“Yes!”

“Oh, goody,” Flowey muttered snarkily, detaching from Frisk and vine-crawling along the floor away from them, still engrossed in his platformer. “I’m sure there’s no way this could go wrong.”

Papyrus hefted the bag and Frisk into his arms.

“OF COURSE NOT! WE’VE GOT THIS… IN THE BAG!!! NYEH-HEH-HEH!”

“Hehehe!”

“Ugh,” Flowey groaned. “I’m going outside.”

“OKAY!!! HAVE FUN, FLOWEY!”

Papyrus turned and headed for the kitchen. Frisk positioned themself so they could wave goodbye to Flowey from over his shoulder.

“See you later, Flowey! Watch out for birds!”

“What…?” he turned, looking baffled. “Why would I need to watch out for birds?”

“Sans said that because you’re so tiny it means that birds can pick you up and fly away with you.”

“Oh, did he now…” Flowey said, gritting his teeth. “Well, tell that smiley trashbag that - actually, never mind! Don’t tell him anything!”

While Papyrus baked in the kitchen, Frisk watched and waited.

Their task - their very important task?

Guard duty.

This was not something Frisk took lightly, to be assigned such an important duty by such an accomplished former almost-guard. They watched the hallway like a hawk for anyone who might intrude and spoil the surprise for their mom.

The sound of the front door! Frisk tensed.

“Hey, Papyrus!!! You in here?”

Undyne. Fearless former captain of the royal guard. They weren’t feeling particularly good about their odds of stalling her here, but she was getting closer, and Frisk was a trusted accomplice, after all.

Frisk shot out in front of Undyne, spreading out their arms to block her path.

“Uh, hey, Frisk. What’s up?”

They hadn’t thought this far.

“You shall not pass!”

“I… shan’t?”

Frisk shook their head firmly.

Undyne seemed a mixture of both taken aback and confused, before a dangerous glint appeared in her eye.

“Ohh, I get it! You want to WRESTLE!!!”

Frisk really did not want to wrestle. But Papyrus’ baking surprise was on the line here.

They took one determined step forwards.

“Oh?” said Undyne, cracking her knuckles. “You’re approaching me?!”

“I can’t wrestle you without getting closer.”

“Oh-ho! Then come as close as you like!!!” Undyne grinned, her eye and sharp teeth glinting. “NGAAAAHHHH!!!”

“Hyaahhhhh!!!”

“Excuse me.”

Undyne and Frisk froze mid-lunge to find Toriel standing in the doorway with her arms crossed, one eyebrow raised, looking thoroughly unimpressed. Sans stood next to her, clearly amused.

Undyne coughed and relaxed from her wrestling stance.

“Ha, uh, sorry, Toriel… got a little… carried away.”

“Oh, it’s alright. Just don’t do it again. Frisk is much too small for that kind of roughhousing.”

She gulped.

“Yes. Sorry.”

Toriel nodded, then turned to Frisk with a smile. She opened her mouth to say something… and suddenly Frisk remembered.

Toriel! In the hallway!

“Code fluff! Code fluff!” they shouted.

Toriel blinked.

“Fluff…?” Undyne muttered.

“AHHHHHH!!!”

The sound of crashing pots and pans and silverware echoed from the kitchen, which was odd, as absolutely none of those items should have been involved with Papyrus’ current activity.

“WHOOPSIE-DOOPSIE! JUST A SMALL KERFUFFLE! NOTHING TO SEE HERE!!!” said Papyrus, sliding out of the kitchen in a way that was not at all suspicious.

“That was a bit suspicious,” Undyne muttered.

“NOT AT ALL! I WAS JUST… CLEANING!!!”

“Uh-huh. What are you up to, Papyrus?” she asked, poking him in the chest.

“I… UH…!”

“eh, it’s cool, pap, you don’t hafta tell us,” Sans shrugged, strolling up from… the kitchen. Frisk blinked.

“OH. THANK YOU, SANS!”

“we’re just not on a knead-to-know basis, i guess.”

“YES, THANK YOU, SANS…” Papyrus muttered through gritted teeth.

Toriel glanced at Sans curiously, clearly picking up the intonation of a joke but still oblivious as to its source.

“What?!” Undyne scowled. “Why not?”

“NO! WAIT! THERE IS NO KNEAD-TO-KNOW - ARGH! NEED-TO-KNOW BASIS!!! THERE IS NOTHING TO KNOW!!! EXCEPT A SPARKLY CLEAN KITCHEN!!!”

“Okay, I know you’re lying, Papyrus.”

“yeah, that was a little half-baked.”

“SANS.”

“Tell us!”

“NO!”

“bro, we’re pie-ning for a hint here.”

“NO!!”

“Do I need to noogie you again?! Do I need to noogie the skeleton?!”

“NO!!! NO YOU DO NOT!!!”

“c’mon, i just want a piece of the pie.”

“THAT’S NOT EVEN A PUN! THAT’S JUST LITERALLY WHAT YOU WANT!!!”

Toriel’s face lit up suddenly as it clicked.

“Papyrus!” she gasped, sounding very touched. “Were you trying out my pie recipe?”

“…ah. whoops.”

“…NYOOOO HOO HOO!!!” Papyrus wailed, collapsing to the ground dramatically. “THE SURPRISE IS RUINED!!!”

Frisk wisely chose to back away slowly from the erupting chaos. Flowey, his vines securing him to the door frame, peeked in and raised an unimpressed eyebrow.

“Mission failed,” Frisk mumbled to him.

“…you don’t say.”

I’m a pjm myself but this post is literally so ridiculous 😭 This is some peak stage of twitter’s mind corruption and being out of touch with reality 😂 I can’t speak about the others but I was following you for more than a year and you wrote some of the most interesting posts about jimin’s art I’ve seen here. I may not share all of your views about jimin but to call you a jimin anti is just kinda insane

What should I do? Is it time to call my mom and tell her that I am finally infamous on tumblr.com? Should I pop the champagne?

I will not comment about this blogger's page and its discourse in general, nor about the other people mentioned in the post.

But I will say something first about one person. Peppertaemint is my friend, not my moot. I know, hard concept to understand. Our friendship does not rely on us being kpop moots because we're a lot cooler than that. We're also music fans, not multi stans, but I see that for someone chronically online, this is impossible to understand.

As to me being accused of being a Jimin "anti", I'm genuinely shocked. Because if there's one person that I'm singing praises too as if I'm getting paid (I'm not), it would be Jimin because I'm a weak bitch for the man. But I am not his stan, not his akgae, not his anti, I'm not Army, I'm not multi-stan, I'm not a jikooker, I'm not any other fandom-related label that it's being attached to me. I have my identity which is not related to kpop and I have other purposes in life that do not require for me to look for satisfaction within a fandom. I am merely a person with various interests, as I have been revealing more and more since I changed my blog's direction, who also happens to have one in kpop and some BTS members, with a particular emphasis on Jimin.

I have never "downplayed" his talent or made "shady" posts about him. On the contrary, I've always had to try and see things from a more objective perspective and sometimes I found that it was difficult because my bias towards him took over.

I am a supposed Jimin anti, but he's the only artist in kpop that I've written extensively about and trying to bring my own contribution by writing about his art. I am such a Jimin anti that I have spent weeks doing hours of research after finishing my work in order to be able to write something worth reading about his photofolio. I am such a Jimin anti that I almost cried out of anger when I couldn't access articles that I needed in order to understand some of his concepts. I had put myself voluntarily in a situation similar to my usual academic research at a point in which that type of work was detrimental to my mental health. But I pushed it because I loved that photofolio and it was one of those rare occasions in which I got reminded that there's still joy in doing that when the person I'm writing about is worth it and there's no outside pressure.

I always write about the projects he's involved with. During the time he was announced as Dior ambassador and went to Fashion Week, I have opened up the floor to those with more expertise so that we can take the discussion further and turn it into an interesting weekend debate.

Until I closed my blog on the day of Face's release for personal reasons, I wrote about his concept every single time when something was released. When idiots all over the internet were talking shit about SMFpt2, I had written extensively about the song and the music video. But I am a Jimin anti.

Fan engagement (not stan part of a fandom) can take many forms and we are allowed to do it in whatever way possible. I do not care what others are doing, if they think that their best way of having a contribution is by posting about streaming or reporting accounts. That is not me, it will never be me. The best I can do, and not based on some supposed stan duty, is to write about the artists I like in a way that makes sense for me.

I do not make posts for engagement, this tumblr blog is but one tiny bit in my life and I do not need that. I do not spend my time "dragging pjms" as if they're my personal target. Even when I voiced my complains, I then had talks with anons that brought their own perspective which I understood and made me see things differently. That happens because I am not completely out of touch with reality and I can behave as a normal person who can have talks with a variety of fans.

I'm not writing all this to justify myself for this blogger, but because I do not accept such a gross characterization and because I've put a lot of effort in so many posts I have written about Jimin and I find it completely unfair to be slapped with such ridiculous labels.

Anon, I understand why you brought this issue to me. But honestly, I'd rather not know what is out there. I have my own corner here, a sort of personal public diary. I like to share my thoughts about plenty of other stuff as well, make some jokes, hoping that some of the readers have a sense of humor as well and mind my business. I do not situate myself within any fandom and I refuse to be dragged into situations like these by people who cannot escape a toxic stan/kpop mentality.
