my mom's impression of DDBA episode 3 & 4

so today we have a free day. afternoon watch it is, meaning no drinks but it's okay

last weekend was packed so she chose to watch two at once this week

and I'll live write this time so hopefully i wont miss any of her amazing takes

Episode 3

"what is it, a bird?" says a woman who was not fully paying attention to the coquis talk and also thought he was talking about a coconut [aka 'coco' in ptbr]

"is he gonna be found not guilty?👀 tell me!" "i won't tell you!"

"stupid! die for dying, i'd tell he truth already!" about Nicky Torres

"just remembered our poor guy that died... i still can't." she's still mumbling about foggy

"it's the right thing to do. *cackles*" "???what?" "he only knows how to say this"

"ha😃👉 tip of the horn." matt in the empty courtroom

"they're gonna kill him outside. he's gonna die. isn't he? tell me!" "i won't tell you anything!" "i know he's gonna die. they're killing him." she's just like me watching shit i swear I'd be expecting the worst every time

"wasnt there some voting/petition?" "???? for what?" "not killing foggy?" "what voting? what for?" "because the fans liked him! nobody would've wanted him dead." "but they were already filming it, and nobody knew it beforehand. what voting." "i still think it was so unfair."

"he's gonna die... :( he ordered him to kill him" she thinks fisk did it. again.

"poor thing :((" she got very sad for hector

"who killed him?" "do you recognize this symbol? 👀 (aka the SKULL symbol)" "... don't tell me is that guy." "what guy?" "the one that... fell from the roof." "bullseye???no??"

me: "look, the coquis [end credits]" "the bird" "it's a fROG" "oh, yeah"

"im so sad they killed him. it was fisk" you've noticed a pattern, i bet

after the lengthy explanation to make her recall season 2 "but he knows it wasn't [frank], right?" not even my mom, remembering the bare minimum, believed it was frank for a second

Episode 4

"imma punch you!" threatening the fisk recap. ma'am??

"i'm so upset they freed [hector] to kill him"

"is he gonna keep this fucking thing?" mocking matt's broken horn again

old man in interview: "I'd be a vigilante" mom: "they'll kill him. didn't fisk say..."

leroy: i can't go to jail! "isn't he already in jail? :v" okay jokester

fisk: when i was a boy... mom: "...i killed my dad! :v"

the fisk end scene "what's this?" "food." "it's ugly. ugly thing. (after a long pause) ugly thing. and he eats in the dark?" "...i guess it's a rich people thing."

"how many masks does he have??" "five!🖐️😃" "......huh🤔😒"

the muse scene "is he taking bad guys?" "no, just normal people, still. "how does he get the blood out of people?" "with this tube thing there." "but they're alive later?" "...pretty sure they'd die of blood loss."

Consider: Post-canon Zuko wakes up in the body of his childhood self, the morning of That War Meeting. Would he still speak against the plans, knowing his fate? What do you think he would do differently the second time around?

"Turned away at the doors, Zuzu?"

"Shut up, Azula," her brother sulked. But sulked weirdly, after staring at her too long and too wide-eyed, not like she'd surprised him but--

But like he hadn't expected her to be there. At all.

He turned away. ...He turned back. "Hey, Lala? Do you think you could help me practice that one set?"

He didn't meet her eyes.

She narrowed hers. "Which set?"

"The one I'm bad at."

She scoffed. Pushed away from the wall she'd been leaning against. "That's all of them, Dum-Dum."

He didn't shout or stomp or yell about the nickname. His lips twitched.

"It's okay," he said. "If you're afraid you won't be a better teacher that my instructor..."

It was the most obvious manipulation ever.

Perhaps if he proved an adequate firebending student, she'd work on his courtly survival skills next. Honestly, it was good that not even Uncle Gets-Cousins-Killed had been fool enough to take Zuko into that war meeting. She could only imagine how terribly that could have gone.

"Keep up," she said, and turned her steps towards the training grounds.

He did. There, and during the katas she ran him through.

Azula kept her eyes narrowed.

"Hey," he asked, "do you know how to bend lightning yet?"

As if he could have missed it, if she'd been able to get more than sparks. "I will soon," she said.

"You will," he agreed, and flowed through his next set. The one she'd only just mastered.

Father didn't notice how weird Zuzu was being. Uncle never noticed anything. Zuko ate dinner and asked a servant for seconds and didn't stutter or flinch or lose his appetite when father asked, coolly, what he'd done with his day. Azula's shoulders tensed, because one mention of how she'd squandered her own training time teaching him--

"Azula hogged the training grounds. For hours," Zuzu scowled, exactly like a petulant thirteen year old.

Exactly like he hadn't been acting all day.

By the time Father was looking her way, Azula had her usual smirk in place. "I'm sure there would be room for both of us," she said, "you're not afraid of a little friendly fire, are you, brother?"

Zuko sulked. And ate his seconds, like he was enjoying each bite. There was something in his eyes, like a joke no one else was getting.

Father died that night. A heart attack. There were the faintest of burns to either side of the treacherous organ; the royal physician hypothesized that he'd grabbed at his chest, fingers burning hot in his final moments; so hot they'd only exacerbated the problem.

The royal physician would never have been brought any victims of lighting strikes. Those that occurred in the capital did not generally require a doctor in the aftermath.

Zuzu ate a hearty breakfast.

He didn't order seconds. Azula gave him points, at least, for not being tacky.

They named Zuko as Fire Lord.

"No," the tiny Fire Lord in his perfectly miniaturized Fire Lord robes said, sitting at the head of his war council. "We're not doing that. And I'll be reviewing all recent battle plans, as well. What's this I hear about a division of new recruits being deployed to the front?"

He did not mention how he'd heard of the 41st Division. No one asked.

"Prince Iroh, surely--" one of the generals tried to appeal.

The young Fire Lord's regent was looking as startled as the rest of them, for a moment. Then he sipped his tea, and smiled.

"Your Fire Lord is correct, of course. A change in our leadership--a change the other nations may mistakenly view as weakness--will necessitate a change in our strategy."

"Now," said their lord, "what, exactly, is our overall objective in this war?"

War, the new Fire Lord decreed, was not an end unto itself.

The new Fire Lord continued to have time, to pretend to be trained by her. Azula watched him. Adjusted her footwork. Did not tolerate, and was not offered, any commentary on who was teaching who.

"What did you do with my brother?" she asked, as they flowed from one set to the next. As her hands, poised to throw fire, just so happened to be pointed his way.

He missed a step. It didn't look like an act.

"I'm, uh. Right here?"

She didn't bother to dignify that.

He didn't bother to look worried about her hands, one movement off from a true attack.

He looked around, then grabbed her sleeve, and tugged her further from any walls that may hide ears. The royal family's private training grounds were wonderfully large, and wonderfully open.

"It's me," he said. "It's still me. Just. More of me? Longer of me?"

She narrowed her eyes. A familiar expression, by this point. "Explain."

"...I found the Avatar," he said. "And this is definitely his fault, but--but I guess it started at a war meeting, when I was thirteen."

Azula listened. It was a very Dum-Dum story.

I already had the AFAG one done to be fair, and the rest aren't quite finished yet (need to touch up/add more details, but I got the basics down). I also prepped some bottle caps to be pins, but I also fucked up the paint job in the process so 🧍 (just the base white layer I put down -- not a travesty, just annoying 😔)

Here's hoping these find a nice home on my jacket!!!!!!

Just saying if Martha Wayne was still alive there isn't any way Bruce would still be single (or single for long). Every dinner they had would conclude with Martha sorrowfully observing the lack of grandkids--

Bruce: "I have like ten children, you have plenty of grandkids--"

Thomas: "Whom we adore. Really, let's just get back to dinner, this is incredible stuff, Alfred."

Alfred: "Thank you, sir. More wine?"

Martha: "Yes please Alfred." turns back to Bruce "Kids need more than one, busy father. You need more--"

Bruce: "I have plenty."

Martha, death glare: "Oh I'm well aware, as is most of Gotham."

Bruce:

Thomas: "So, did anyone catch that game last night. Crushing defeat for Metropolis, wouldn't you agree, Alf?"

I’ve watched so many xianxia/wuxia cdramas about heroes but none quite embody a hero as much as I find Zhuo Yichen to be. If Ep25’s conversation between him and Lilun about hatred and how you allow it to consume you hasn’t convinced you, Ep26 cements this. He is so truly selfless, a great martial artist, puts the good of people first, and most importantly he learns. He is not without flaws, but he accepts the faults in his worldview without resistance. Even when his greatest nightmare of turning into a demon comes true, he accepts it albeit with pain and grace. He never falls into self-pity and hatred to the point that it blinds him (unlike Lilun), even when the world he protects curses him and gives him more than enough reasons to. He forgives the demon who killed his family, because he learns.

His sacrifice in Ep26 means so much to his character — recognising that Zhuyan shouldn’t have needed to pay for things beyond his control, coming face to face with his heritage and dying for it so he can save everyone, willingly letting go of the sword he once only wielded for vengeance and asking for it to turn into a weapon of saving grace (to rescue Baijiu). And he does all these with nothing but an embracing acceptance and reasonable tears. Yichen never once calls himself a hero, but I find that he is one of the greatest to have graced the cdrama screen.

my mom's impression of DDBA episode 1 & 2

so my mom really likes iron man and marvel stuff, watching marvel stuff is our bonding moment

so i got her into daredevil as well a couple years ago

so here are her impressions of the episodes (that i remember, bc we do drink together while watching stuff)

"no, that's just bullshit now. that's a joke. how is it possible that he's [dex] still alive?" "...fisk was shot in the eye by echo and he's still walking around, mom. what do you mean 'how's it possible'? it's a hero series. there's no logic!" (a real exchange where i tried and failed not to laugh)

"I'm feeling a weight on my chest now, a bad sensation :(" 20 minutes after foggy's death she was still sad

and she bought it up again after the two episodes. mom was saddened, she's not over it.

also she definitely still thinks fisk hired dex, she's fighting me on this

"he should have broken his spine!" "...he did, though. last season." "no, but he should've broken it now." "i mean, it's been fixed with metal an' all" "but what about his heart? his lungs?" unfortunately, for her displeasure, i don't have all the answers

"is he [dex] coming back? you watched this already, haven't you?" she is the anti-spoiler-woman. bc she knows i do a first watch in english, she pesters me FOR SPOILERS. and i have to keep them in.

"how is it possible, uh? that people elected a thing like this?" "...i mean, trump's in office now, idk." "he [matt] really did say it. 'new york will have the mayor it deserves', huh?" and then disgruntling nodded to herself. me: '-'

hearing hector ayala's name and repeating it in a mutter to herself a couple of times. i think she either liked how it sounded or was very pleased by the presence of a latino name.👍

"they're not getting along anymore?[fisk & vanessa on the roof] throw her off." i was ?????? ma'am?

"so this is muse. he's going to be a minor villain now. he kills people and paints with their blood." "christ! (very yucked) but does he kill bad people or...? (not yucked anymore, just interested)" "...just people, people." "but why?" "...what do you mean 'why'? he's a villain." "he's [fisk] going to hire him."

for her, fisk's hiring everyone eventually

also she's been spoiled by the punisher, not everyone's good like that, mom

the comissioner fighting fisk in the graveyard. my mom: "he's going to die."

bb asks about vanessa. my mom: "she's going to die."

heather signing something "did she sell matt out?" "...mom, it's an NDA, probably. (my ass is not even trying not to laugh anymore)" "what for?" "he's the mayor??"

the apartment confrontation "did he kill them? (appalled)" "i'm gonna be honest, idk (i get the glare from when she wants spoilers) i really don't, there's only these two episodes out!" "he's going to kill again, now that he already killed once." (meanwhile dex very much alive)

credits of episode 2. a long silence. "no, i didn't like it. i feel bad. they killed foggy." she's still thinking about it. the only information she fully processed from 2 episodes.
