A Bad Landing Destroys the Entire Trip

You're on a plane flying across the country. The security check-in was a breeze. You were in the mid-section but as you board the attendant moves you up to the third row. The in-flight movie is one you've been dying to see and the flight is almost completely devoid of turbulence. It's a wonderful flight.

As you descend to land, however, the turbulence gets kind of insane. At one point, the oxygen masks pop out and upon hitting the ground, the front tire of the landing gear snaps off and you screech to a long, terrifying halt in the middle of the runway.

The flight is remembered as one of the worst, most traumatic experiences of your life.

I was severely late to the Game of Thrones party. Everyone in the free world (which is actually how Twitter feels until you realize how small a percentage of sentient humans use the app) was into it. Podcasts about it. Constant raving about it. I finally caved in and decided to binge the whole thing once the ending was in sight.

I loved it. Until the landing. The last five or so episodes were so rushed, so poorly thought out, and so sloppily put together (a Starbucks cup on the set of one of the most expensive and immersive televisions shows in modern history?) that the result seems to be a wholesale rejection of everything enjoyed breathlessly for years.

The very instant Twitter discovered the tepid ending, the uprise was evident. A huge flare-up followed by...silence. These days, if I ask someone I know was a whole hog GoT fan about Westeros, I receive a shrug and the quick response of bringing up a bad break-up from a disappointing ex.

My mom and dad loved Longmire. Effectively a crime procedural set in rural Wyoming and centered on a sheriff who reminded me of nothing less than my dad if he were a sheriff in Cheyenne country. Mom and I frequently (as so many do) recommend television and film that we think the other will dig, so I bit and jumped into the first episode.

Dana didn't care for it; I thought it had some merit if for no other reasons than I love Katee Sackhoff and Lou Diamond Phillips and firmly believe neither get enough screen time. I've spent my pandemic watching long form, episodic shows so the "Crime/Investigate/Solve the Crime" in one hour format was a step backwards but I liked Walt Longmire and I especially enjoyed the themes around white people co-existing with Native Americans. I can't recall too many shows that explore Life on the Rez in too much detail so this was new and interesting.

I binged some with breaks for six seasons. The first three were produced by AMC, the show was canceled then picked up by Netflix for three more. All in all, I spent a truly enjoyable 60 hours with Walt, Vic, Henry, the Ferg, Jacob Nighthorse, and Hector. 

It was apparent that the writers knew the series was ending with Season Six, so they started wrapping things up in fairly tidy fashion. It felt a bit rushed but I was willing to go along with a lot of it until the last three episodes and then it took a shit. Like the writers all got high and told the interns to finish it up.

Now, despite digging 57 hours of the show, the last three hours prevent me from recommending it to anyone.

You decide to take your wife for a high-end meal at one of the super-swank restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip. It's beautiful and sexy inside. You are seated at a table with a view of the Bellagio Fountain.

You order and each course is better than the last. The liquor is top-shelf. The food is fresh and expertly prepared, each bite melting inside you mouth like nutritious gold.

The dessert comes and, unknown to you, the chef has left a solid chunk of dog turd in the center of it. You bite down on dogshit and instantly vomit into your wife's lap.

The dinner is remembered as the worst in your life. Your wife declares that she will never eat out again and you subsist on nothing but Ramen and canned soup for the rest of your life.

It is a fundamental truth that no matter how solid the ride is, if you can't stick the fucking landing, the landing is the only thing anyone remembers (except your mom because she loves you and will lie to you to make you not want to eat a bullet). 

Endings are almost more important than the rest of the journey.

We all loved Lost until we didn't. We all reveled in Dexter until it blew chunks. Stephen King managed to create one of the scariest creations in fiction with Pennywise then made him a giant spider who is defeated by people taunting him.

Granted, one man's shit ending may be another man's perfect ending. I've read that the conclusion of War of the Worlds (the aliens are done in by germs) is somewhat like the ending of Signs (water kills them so why hop over to a planet covered in fucking water) but for some reason I love the first and despise the second. Maybe it's Mel Gibson?

Lots of folks hated the ending of The Sopranos but I loved it.

Whatever the case, a bad landing blows the entire ride.

You have ten years of a great marriage. Lots of love, lots of sex, lots of vacations. Compromises and laughter. Fights and reconciliations.

But the last year, she has an affair with a mutual friend that she’s cast in a bunch of shows with you and it ends badly.

No matter how good the good years were, you're see that marriage as a failure.

The ending is essential to the journey.

Holding out his arms as if to gesture to himself “Always.”

“Sam said you're dead. He said Michael killed you.”

Lucifer shrugged “Yeah, I don't like to speak ill of people, but Sam is a big fat liar and he's a bad person and... like, freakishly tall, so,

“I-I don't understand?” Jack questioned

“No, Michael didn't...Sam was the one who left me behind.” Lucifer said acting innocent “What?” Jack said

“Yep.” Lucifer walks closer to Jack to face him “I mean, I think he thought I'd be trapped over there in "Giant Litter Box World" forever, 'cause that worked so well the first time. I don't blame him, though, okay? I mean...for everything that I've done to him, I think, uh, I had it coming, you know? But you know what? I'm moving on.” He explained

Jack responded, “But if the rift is closed, then how are you here?”

“Oh, no. Not ‘how.’ ‘Why.’ I'm here for you, Jack. Because, you know, even though the Three Amigos -- Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Dean’s little spawn -- won't admit it, you need me. You do, 'cause we're blood. And we're not human, no matter how much we pretend to be. See, humans are...limited and fragile. And I'll admit, they bring out the worst in me, I gotta say. It seems like, you know, no matter how much you try to do right around them, something always goes wrong. Follow?” Lucifer sighed

“I ...I know.” Jack frowned Y/n was his friend and she was gone.

Lucifer smiled “Right? And that's not their fault, or ours. It's just, us and humans, we're like oil and water. You know, sardines and strawberries. It's just a bad combination.”

“What do we do?” He pondered

“Leave,” He smiled Lucifer turns from Jack and looks towards the sky, “I mean...there's a whole universe out there, buddy. Planets. Stars. Galaxies. Why should we stay here on Earth when we can go anywhere else? Heck, everywhere else.”

Jack smiled “Like, um, like Star Wars?”

Lucifer turns to Jack excitedly “Exactly like Star Wars. You want a lightsaber? I can make you a lightsaber. Heck, I can make you a Wookiee.”

“But...no. Sam, Dean, and Castiel, they'll miss me.” he frowns

Lucifer placing his hand on Jack's shoulder “Yes, they will. They will. It'll be hard. But you have to live your life for you. Right? This is our second chance, kiddo. This is our opportunity to escape our past and our sins and start over. What do you say? Father, son. You up for an adventure, buddy?”

Jack nodded “I...I'd like that. But there's something you need to do first.”

Back at the Bunker 

“Talked to the other refugees. No one's got any idea who'd wanna hurt Y/n.” Bobby said scratching his beard

“Maybe it wasn't one of them. Maybe...there are monsters in this world that aren't monsters.” Mary said

Jack and Lucifer came down the stair “Jack! Hey --” she began

lucifer sent a small wave “Hey.”

“Kid, what the Sam Hell?” Bobby jaw dropped seeing Satan back

Jack held his hands up “It's all right, okay? He's here to help.”

“He is.” bobby said skeptically Lucifer walking with Jack past Bobby “You know it, Longmire.”

“Call Sam. Now.” Mary said to Bobby

Lucifer and Jack walk into the main room in the bunker. Y/n is lying on the map table. She has been cleaned up and is covered with a sheet up to her neck. Mary follows them into the room. “Hmm. So you're leaving dead bodies on tables now. Nice.” Lucifer smirked

“We were waiting, to give her a Hunter's funeral,” Mary said

“You won't have to. My father, he's gonna bring Y/n back to life.”

“I am?” he said shocked

Mary grabbed Jack’s arm “Jack, what are you doing?”

“What I have to. This...it's my second chance to prove to Dean I’m good.”

Lucifer clapped his hands ‘Yeah, uh, Jack, about this, uh, resurrection stuff -- It's not always a great idea because, uh... you know, people come back...different.”

“Well, Sam didn't,” Jack replied

“Right. Well, Sam's always been...sort of different. You know what I mean? Some would say ‘special.’, lucifer looked over at Mary “No offense.”

“You said you'd do anything.” Jack presses

Lucifer grudgingly walked over to Y/n “Fine. Fine.” He places a hand on Y/n's forehead

Mary leans over to Jack “Has he done something to you?”

“I heard that. Heard it.” Lucifer said annoyed

“Mary, everything's gonna be fine.” Jack placed a hand on her shoulder

“Okay,” Lucifer says Lucifer's eyes glow red. He pulls his hand away quickly and Y/n sits up, gasping. Sam, Dean, and Castiel come rushing through the door on the upper level.

“Jack? Jack!” Sam yells

Dean not caring for Jack staring at his daughter looking at him “y/n.” his voice cracking tears filling his eyes.

“Dad?” She said

Y/n’s POV

Uncle Sam, Dad, Castiel, Mary, and Bobby sat are around the map table in the bunker “How did Michael and Lucifer both get here? How did they open a rift?” Sam runs his hand through his hair

“You know what? It doesn't -- We -- we've gotta find Jack before Michael does whatever the hell he's gonna do, okay? I-I'll call Jody and everybody else.” Dean says grabbing his phone

Bobby grabbed his arm “You're gonna put out an APB on the Devil?”

“Yeah, I am.” Dean snaps back passing by you not giving you a single look

“I'll check angel radio,” Cas states to no one

“Sam, even if we find Lucifer, how we gonna stop him?” Mary asks

Hearing footsteps heading to you as you just stare at the wall “Y/n? Hey, sorry. You okay?” Sam asks grabbing your hand

“I'm alive, so... yes? One second I'm with my family and then everything dark and I’m in heaven.” You sighed

“Listen, I-I know this is weird -- so...weird -- but, um, before you...died, do you remember anything about the person that killed you?”

“Does it matter? Kinda seems like you have bigger, you know, Satan-y problems. and Michael here”

“Yeah, but -- but we're -- we're dealing with those. Mostly. Um...But yes, it does matter. It matters to me. and your dad.” Sam says rubbing his hand up and down your back

“I... I never saw his face, but, uh... I saw his eyes.” you said Sam nodded about to continue when your dad walks in “All right, Jody's lookin'. So far, Nada.” he frowns

Cas sits down as well “Yeah, angel radio is nothing but static, which is disturbing.” Dean sighs “Great. Well, we'll just add that to the list.”

“So what do we do now?” Mary asks A loud banging sound and the lights begin to flicker “What’s happening.” You ask your dad coming to your side.

Sam looks at the door to the outside world beginning to shake.

“oh god.”

“What the hell is that,” Bobby yells as the alarms blare

“Mom, Bobby take Y/n and get her out her go through the garage,” Sam says as the banging gets louder and the door shakes

Mary grabs your arm “We’ll buy you time.” Dean says 

“Dad no I won’t leave you!” You yell as mary begins to pull you with Bobby “Go Y/n.” Dean tells you “Dad no. no.” you yell out as you’re pulled out the room.

“Come Y/n we have to go.” mary tells you as tears stream down your face as you yell for your dad. 

Pulling your arm free from her you start sprinting towards your dad as Mary yells your name. Entering the room you see Cas thrown across the room and sam on the ground your dad in a chokehold in Michael's grip.

“Dad!” you yell getting everyone attention 

“Ah the youngest Winchester Y/n pleasure seeing you again.” Michael smirks tighten his grip on Dean

“let him go.” you yell at him 

“Y/n get out of here.” Your dad gasps for air struggling to free himself.

“Dean Winchester will be the first life that I take in this world, the first soul I save. Some would consider that an honor.” He smirks at you flicking his wrist sending you to hit the pole falling on the ground groaning in pain. “y/N! Y/N” Dean yells struggling in his grip

“Well, as Shakespeare once said, eat me, dickbag.” He growls out

Michael smiles and tightens his grip even more. Dean is struggling to breathe. Behind them, Sam is on his hands and knees “Jack, Jack. Jack, I don't know where you are, and I don't even know if you can hear this prayer, but we need you. We need you.”

“Could've done this quick, but I wanted to enjoy it, that moment when the soul leaves the body... ‭‬it's beautiful.‬” Michael grins seeing Dean slowly turn blue RIght before he passes out, he and Michael are hit with a shock wave and they fall to the floor. As they fall, Jack appears behind them. Behind Jack, Sam uses the wall behind him to push himself to a standing position. While you push yourself up by the table.

“Jack.” Sam breathes a sigh of relief

I heard your prayer.” Jack answered staring at Michael

“Yeah, it's me. Yay,” lucifer yelped, “Uh, we done, buddy? Buddy?”

As Michael starts to stand up. As he does, Jack's eyes glow and he raises his hand “You hurt my friends.” he growls Michael starts to yell in pain. Black liquid runs out of his eyes and ears. “You hurt my family!” Jack yells squeezing his fist and Michael goes to his knees, screaming in pain

“Whoa.” Lucifer gulped

“Lucifer, we -- we had a deal!” Michael screamed out ‘Deal’ you look over at Sam who was also confused

“Okay, game over,” Lucifer laughed, “Hey, buddy, let's, uh, let's, uh... split, okay?”

“What does he mean?” Jack questioned “I-I-I don't know. I didn't -- I didn't hear.” Lucifer stammered

“They had a deal. Lucifer gets you, and Michael gets everything else. He's gonna nuke our world, Jack, just like he did his.” Dean said walking over to us wrapping his arm around me pulling me closer to him.

Jack looked over at his father “Is that true?” he asked

“‭No! It's not.‬” he lied

“Is that why you wanted us to leave?” jack questioned, “Leave?” You called out looking at Jack with a frown.

“He said -- he said we'd go to the stars.” jack defended his dad

“What, and you're just gonna leave the rest of us here to burn?” Castiel accused Lucifer “Okay. Hold on a second. Let's slow down, 'cause I...I'm not currently the bad guy here.” he exclaimed

“Yeah, tell that to Y/n,” Sam said pointed towards you

“What about y/n?” jack asked about one his closest friends

“She saw the eyes of the person who killed her -- the glowing, red eyes,” Sam said

“You're gonna -- you're gonna believe this guy? Come on, man! Sam's a hater!” Lucifer sputtered

“Tell me,” Jack stated “He would say anything to get you on his side.” lucifer tried getting on jack’s side

Jack moved towards Lucifer, eyes glowing and hand outstretched “Tell me the truth!” He yelled

Lucifer’s eyes start to glow, his head tilts to the side and he starts speaking “She saw me when I was scouting out the bunker. She saw me and she screamed, and then...so I crushed her skull with my bare hands. And it was warm and wet, and I liked it.” Dean pulled you closer keeping far away from Lucifer

Lucifer's eyes return to normal and he looks confused “You're not my father. You're a monster.” Jack cries

Lucifer yells “Come on, man!” He bellows so forcibly that you, Sam and Dean cover their ears, his eyes glowing red “Okay. I tried with you. I really tried with you.”

“Everything you told me was a lie,” Jack replied

Lucifer threw his hands up “Because I told you what you wanted to hear, man. So what?! I killed the runt! Big deal! She's a -- she's a human!,” He points at you, “We need fewer Winchesters anyway She doesn't matter!”

“So am I!” Jack yells back

“Yeah? And that's your problem,” he points at Jack, “You're too much like your mother.” Lucifer steps closer

“Jack...” You say

“Stay back. I'll handle him.” Jack holds his hand up

Lucifer laughs “Will you? Oh, buddy. We could've been something, you and me. We could've remade the universe. It would've been great. We could've been better gods than Dad. And I really wanted that, pal. I wanted that. But now if I can't have it with you, I...I don't need ya. I just need your power.”

‭Lucifer produces an angel blade from his sleeve and cuts Jack on his neck

“Jack!” You cry trying to go to him your dad holding you back.

“No!” Castiel yells‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Lucifer grabs Jack's jacket in his fist and sucks Jack's grace into his mouth. His eyes glow yellow as he touches Jack's neck, healing him. Jack looks as if he's going to collapse.

“Jack,” Dean calls to him

Cas yells “Jack!” Dean and Castiel rush forward to grab Jack. As Dean touches Jack, there is an explosion of light. Castiel is thrown down to the ground by the force of the explosion, while Dean is absorbed into it.

“Dean!” Sam yells

“Dad!” You cry out.

“What just happened?” Sam asked

“I don't know,” Cas answered equally confused

“The Devil won. That's what happened.” Michael says Your heart drops your dad was with a juiced-up Devil.

Dean’s POV

He lands on the floor in a church. He struggles to his knees. Lucifer is standing in front of him, holding Jack up by his coat collar

“Really, Dean? Hitching a ride? I mean, do you ever quit?” lucifer hisses

“Go to hell.” He spits back

“Hell, yeah.‬ Been there. Done that.‬” He smirks Lucifer drops Jack and turns to kick Dean, knocking him to the ground)

Y/n”s POV

“How do we stop him?” Sam asks

“You don't. After consuming the Nephilim's grace, Lucifer's juiced up. He's super-charged. He'll kill the boy, your brother. Hell, he could end the whole universe if he put his mind to it. And you thought I was bad.” Michael says shrugging his shoulders

“No. No, you beat him. I saw you.” You said pointing at him.

“When he was weaker, and I was stronger. Believe me, I'd love to rip my brother apart. But now in this banged up meat suit... not happening. This is the end, of everything.” Michael holding his arms up showing off his body

“No. What if...what if you had your sword?” You said looking at him Sam and Cas both looking at you shocked “I'm Dean Winchester’s daughter I the next best thing.” you said staring at him a grin forming his face

Dean’s POV

“You know... it's been really fun. I really had a great time with you, but I think we should see other people. What do you say?” Lucifer drops him, his eyes glow orange as he places a hand on his's chest. ‭‬‬‬‬He grimaces and grunts in pain. Behind him, Jack is getting to his feet, his face bloody.

“Stop!” Lucifer turns, dropping him

“Now, why should I listen to you?” He laughs at the now human

“Because...I'm your son,” Jack replies

“Oh, yeah.‬ ‬‬‬Well, you had a chance with that, but,” Lucifer punches Jack in the face, twice. Jack falls to his knees, “Now?‬‬‬” Lucifer punches Jack a third time and he falls to the ground completely. He is standing up behind him.

“As for kids...Ah, I can make more of those.”

He grabs Lucifer by the shoulder, turning him around. Lucifer punches him in the face and he falls to the floor

“Wow, Daddy Dean coming to the rescue. But your little Jackie, the nougat-loving boy that you had before, he's killed, people. He's got lots of blood on his hands.”

He stands up “I don't care. He's family.”

“Ha! What's family done for anybody? My dad left me. My brothers tried to kill me. A lot. Family blows. And I'm gonna prove it to you.” lucifer yells

“What, by killing me? Go ahead.” He sighs holding his hands out

“No, I'm not gonna kill you,” Lucifer points at Jack, “He is.” As Jack and he looked at each other, Lucifer pulls an angel blade from his sleeve and drops it to the floor between them

Y/n’s POV

“Y/n, no,” Cas says looking at you

“I am your sword.” You say

Flashback

“It's you. You're the Michael sword.‬” Zachariah says

“Your perfect vessel.” You looking at him

“Why do you think you are his vessel? Michael You were born to become his other vessel. Gabriel explained when you first meet

“With me, you'd be stronger than you've ever been.“ you state

“Oh, I know what you are,” Michael smirks

“If we work together, can we beat Lucifer?” You ask

“Y/n!” Sam tries to get your attention. ‭‬‬‬ 

“Can we?!” You yell.‬ “We'd have a chance.” He replies

“Y/n, you can't.” Cas grabs your arm

“Lucifer has Dad. He has Jack. Cas, I don't have a choice!” You decided “If we do this, it's a one-time deal. I'm in charge. You're the engine, but I'm behind the wheel. Understand?” You look at Michael both your uncle and Cas look at the interaction in fear.

Dean’s POV

“Now I could -- I probably should -- execute you. I mean, really, really use my imagination. But I'm feeling generous today. So one of you is gonna walk out that door, and the other one will be laying dead on the ground. You choose.” Lucifer smirks glancing at them both.

“No.” He says

“Or you could do that, and I can murder you both and end all life in the universe. Remake it in my image, better than Dad ever could. I'm thinkin'... mm... fire-breathing dragons, sassy talking robots. I might give humans another chance if they know their place and worship me, 'cause I've earned it. But hey, it'll probably take a few days to unravel the universe, Maybe, uh, 7, 10 days tops. So maybe, just maybe, one of you could stop me. Maybe. Well, let's see. Clock's ticking, guys.” Lucifer lists off

Dean picks up the blade. Jack looks at him questioningly. Dean hesitates for several seconds and turns the handle of the blade towards Jack

“Kill me,” he says

“What?” Jack chokes out “Kill me.‬‬‬‬ You can stop him, Jack.” Dean begs. Placing the blade in Jack's hands “You can get your power back.”

“No, I-I c-can't. I can't beat him. But you can.” Jack answers

“What?” DEan says confused‬

“I know you can.” Jack turns the blade to point at his stomach

“No, no, no, no, no. Jack. Don't! Jack!” Dean yells

“I love you. I love all of you.” Jack cries

“Jack, don't! Don't!” Dean yells Jack pushes the tip of the blade into his stomach and blood stains his shirt. A bright light glows from behind him and he turns to see Y/n, bathed in light, angel wings unfurling behind him. The light goes out and they all turn to face Y/n.

“Y/n” Dean whispers

“Hiya, Dad.

“You let my brother in,” Lucifer growls

“Well, it turns out, he and I have something in common. We both wanna gut your ass.” You snap back Lucifer runs towards Y/n. As he gets near Y/n kicks him in the chest, sending him flying across the church

Y/n goes after Lucifer with an angel blade and the fight, Lucifer eventually knocking the angel blade out of Y/ns hands. They separate, and then run towards each other, rising into the air as they grab each other's shoulders. They continue to fight several feet above the ground. Lucifer gains the upper hand and proceeds to punch Y/n in the face several times, to the point that Y/n can no longer fight back.

“Well...” ‭‬‬‬Lucifer continues to punch Y/n “Good try, Y/n I'll give you that, buddy.‬ I'm not just powerful now. I am in power.”

Dean rushes over to picks up the angel blade

“And I don't need a blade to end you, pal.” He smiles

“Y/n” Dean throws the angel blade into the air and Y/n catches it

“Bye-bye, runt.” Lucifer's eyes glow as he places his hand on Y/n's head. As white light emanates from Y/n's eyes and mouth, she stabs Lucifer with the angel blade. Lucifer lets go of Y/n and she falls to the ground. Lucifer screams as fire burns from his eyes. There's a flash of light and Lucifer falls to the ground.

Y/n’s POV

Lucifer lies on the church floor. His outstretched wings are charred and burning. Y/n, Dean and Jack approach him

“Is he...” Jack starts

“He... he's dead.” Dean states

“Holy crap.” You mumbled

Dean looks over at you “You did it.” 

“No. No, we did it. We did it.” You correct him

You, Dean, and Jack are smiling as they realize what they've done when you double over, grunting in pain “Y/n,” Dean asks grabbing your shoulders

“We had a deal!” You yell when you stop grunting and stands up, incredibly calm “Michael” Dean whispers

“Thanks for the suit,” Michael said before he disappears leaving Dean and jack alone. Dean lost his daughter again. In the bunker, Castiel is sitting on the stairs Sam pacing tears in his eyes. Mary and Bobby run up to him. As they look down, Castiel slowly shakes his head.

No One’s POV

As the rain pelted down on the street as people headed to there destination a woman dressed in a suit a large coat on and a newspaper boy hat rest on her hair. As she looks up grinning her eyes flashing a blue glow.

1.) are you named after someone?

No! But my name does have meaning; my mom had cervical and vaginal cancer and was told she would never have a baby. So, when she got pregnant with me, it was a bonafide miracle. She named me Desireé because she desired me so much and prayed for me day and night

2.) when was the last time you cried?

I'm kinda a softie so I cried when I watched Longmire tonight cause they were discussing some particular hard realities that surround the stealing of native children by white folks who deem our families unfit to raise them. My own family has seen how the corrupt child protective services fails the kids they say they're there to protect so it hit home.

3.) do you have kids?

No and I cannot because of the fusion of my pelvis and lower back. If I were to carry, it would paralyze me and the child would probably not make it.

4.) do you use sarcasm a lot?

I do! Because I deal with chronic pain 24/7 I use humor to deflect and to get me through each day. Sarcasm just kinda comes naturally.

5.) what is the first thing you notice about people?

Usually their teeth. I read lips cause it helps me focus in on the conversation so I naturally look at the person's mouth. Past that, it's hands. I get freaked out over veins so hands are kinda a thing for me.

6.) what is your eye color?

Super dark brown. Kinda chestnuty cause they have a redish hue to them. I've always had a hard time with people seeing my pupils cause my eyes are so dark.

7.) scary movies or happy endings?

Definitely happy endings. I don't like depressing stories or when the ending is 'too realistic’. I already have enough sad stuff in my life, I don't wanna be bombarded with sad stuff when I'm trying to be entertained.

8.) any special talents?

I can draw and write well. I like to think that I have a talent for articulating my thoughts even under pressure. Not always, but even when I'm mad I still feel like I can form the sentences that I need.

9.) where were you born?

In a little town called Mission Viejo. Been in the surrounding area all my life.

10.) what are your hobbies?

I love collecting crystals, stones, and fossils. I enjoy painting and drawing (outside of work) and writing (also outside of work). I like reading sci-fi and thriller novels. I listen to podcasts like Sawbones and MBMBAM and WTNV. I create playlists for fellow writers or artists. I spend time taking pictures of the local wildlife in the canyon by my house.

11.) have any pets?

I have a miniature dachshund named Twinkie and a Ragdoll cat named Castiel.

12.) how tall are you?

I am 5’4”!

13.) what sports do you play/have you played?

I spent 15 years in karate growing up. Now, I cannot participate because of my back.

14.) favorite school subject?

I always loved English and History. I did well in those classes probably cause it was mostly reading and writing.

15.) dream job?

To work on movies that celebrate diversity and include people who are often cast aside in favor of the same old same old.

Book Club, the novel adaptation

THIS WAS AN EXPERIENCE LET ME TELL YOU. 

I roll on up at 6:55 for the 7pm book club. I walk in and there's an immediate flurry because my presence means we need another table. In point of fact, the new table added two seats and they were all filled by the in so whatever guys, you would have needed another table anyway. 

I sit down and everybody is passing around these treats. There's no escaping Ernie's cornbread. He's VERY serious about the cornbread. But it's good cornbread so it's fine. But I successfully refused salami, mozzarella, oreos, milanos, some sort of ritz mix, and some chocolate covered mini cookies. 

Mary comes in, wheeling in a book cart, upon which is a carafe of coffee, some paper cups and a pint of half and half. Another woman whose name I can't remember walks in right then and Mary pounces on her: 

"Did you get my email??"

"No...? What was it about?"

"About coming at 6:30 so you could learn how to make the coffee."

"Oh," glances meaningfully at the clock where it says it's 7:02.

"GIVE ME YOUR PHONE NUMBER."

So we know Mary is a person to watch.

We're settling in and the last woman comes and sits next to me. She says to the person next to her, who is the one who was supposed to come at 6:30 but didn't, "I wonder if we can have decaf next time, I can't have caffeine this late."

The other woman addresses Mary, at the far end of the table. "Mary, Annette wants to know if we can have decaf next time."

"I'm sorry, I can't really hear you."

The message is passed up to Mary. Mary: "I just opened this container of coffee."

Annette's representative: "Well maybe we can get decaf next time?"

Mary: "Is that ok with everyone else? *I* don't drink coffee," (gestures meaningfully to her water bottle "so it doesn't matter to me." 

Attention turns to the guy who leapt for the coffee as soon as it was wheeled in

Annette's representative: "I mean, we're all old. We shouldn't have caffeine this late anyway." 

Silence. 

Coffee guy: "I don't mind. I'll drink whatever's here." 

Mary: "Well, the library provides the coffee." 

Annette's representative: "But surely we could ask for decaf?"

Mary: "Except I think that they provide coffee for ALL the book clubs, so..."

Annette: "Oh, it doesn't matter, I can just bring my own drink." 

Annette's representative: "Maybe we should just bring our own coffee. Coffee isn't that expensive."

Ernie: "We could run it like a club and take dues." 

Mary: "Hahahahaha. Let's have the new people introduce themselves." 

I fear Mary. 

Anyway, it's me and another girl a little younger than me that are new. She moved her a year ago from San Jose. There were 16 people there, of which about 5 were in my general age demographic, another 3 were my parents age and the other 8 were my grandparent's age. 

Ernie goes first, so I go last. 

Ernie's book is about code breakers in WW2. This led to an amazeball side discussion between Ernie and Stan about their respective WW2 experiences (!) which took a long time for a book club that's supposed to be an hour and requires 16 people to give a book summary. 

Then DeNell goes, she's talking about a thriller that she's only partway through.

Then Stan's wife goes. This woman is a retired physics professor, which is pertinent because this review makes her sound like an idiot. She's also had a stroke and is hard to understand but she goes for it.

Stan's wife: "Do you know how the amazon on the computer lets you have a sample of a book so you can decide if you want to buy it?" everyone nods. "Well, I got a sample of this book called The Master Algorithm and I wanted to read it because Stan and I watch this show, I don't know if any of you have ever seen it, it's called Numbers. It's about these two brothers and one is an FBI agent and the other is a math genius and the one brother gets all the cases and the other brother solves the cases using algorithms, and I wanted to know what an algorithm really was because I never had that in my math classes in school. So I read this sample and what I realized was I should have read the second part of the title which was the search for the algorithm that will unlock learning so it was about looking for a special algorithm and not what an algorithm is. What I learned was that I did not need to buy this book."

Silence.

Someone: "Did you read another book, then?"

Stan's wife: "No. I looked up what an algorithm is and I wanted to tell you because that's what I learned this month and also maybe no one else knows what an algorithm is either. What it is, is a set of instructions you give a computer. The example that I saw that made the most sense to me was doing the laundry. Doing the laundry is an algorithm because you decide if something is a white or not, and if it's a white it goes to the whites, and if it's not it goes with the darks."

Silence.

Then Stan talked about his book, a murder mystery set in the Shetlands.

Mary finally started reading the Agatha Raisin books. But because I fear Mary I do not mention that they go downhill pretty fast from where she's at.

The next lady talks about a book about a woman who went to Syria before the war on a Fullbright to study the Koran, and this is the sequel she read, about her life in Jerusalem with her Syrian husband and their child.

Then Paige, the other new girl, talks about a book she read that was historical fiction set during the Irish Potato Famine. She says, "I had no idea the English were so culpable for that, refusing to provide aid."

I nod because I've read some of that history and that's right.

Stan: "But didn't the Irish refuse help from other countries?"

Silence.

Stan: "I know that England didn't help but other countries offered to help and Ireland refused, right?"

Paige: "I can't imagine why, when they had so many people starving to death."

Stan: "I'll look it up."

Me: side-eyes Stan. I choose not to remind him to cite his sources.

Lois: "I should probably pass because I read two books and then I decided which one I would talk about and I put the other one away, and then when I got ready today I couldn't find the one I wanted to bring, and I don't remember the title or the author. It was ok."

I almost DIED.

Her husband read this book about the guy who created the Ultima video games. He went on and on and wasn't interesting. 

The next guy is the coffee enthusiast, and he read a history of Scotland from 1700-2000, and he gives a ton of detail. Too much, because it's already past 8pm and there's 5 of us left.

The next guy read a book called "Hope Never Dies" an Obama/Biden murder mystery. I laughed out loud.

The next lady says, I should probably pass, I'm almost halfway through Lady Chatterley's Lover but I'll probably be done with it by next month.

And then there's an 8 minute discussion of it vs Bridges of Madison County and whether she should try to continue reading another book her mom gave her for Christmas.

The next woman is Annette's coffee advocate and she read a historical fiction book about an Iranian woman poet who had to live out her life in exile and there was some scandal about her romantic poems and between that more explicit than expected discussion and the conversation about Lady Chatterley's Lover, I have to tell you, I'm full up on my quota of minutes spent discussing sex with random octogenarians.

Then Annette goes and she talks about some random thriller she picked up and then says, "Sometimes I read more and sometimes I read less and lately I'm reading less so I'm also going to recommend a TV show that I've been watching. It's mysteries set in a modern day western setting, which I normally avoid westerns but it's very good, and it's based on a series of books, it's called Longmire. I haven't read the books and I don't want to because I like the show so much but I'm sure they're good."

Buddy: "They are!"

Annette: "And the library has the DVDs so you can get them here."

Stan: "They're streamable, too, I don't know if they're on Netflix or Prime but it's one of those."

Annette: "I don't do the streaming anymore, I only get the CDs because the streaming doesn't have enough old stuff but I like to get the TV shows from the library because you can get an entire season at a time instead of just one disc."

And then I went and it was over.

Hmmm….One of my Bucky fics features a female OC who lost her mom at a young age, much like I did. For the most part though, my characters are pretty unique, and the stories I write are ideas/plots that I’m interested in reading. 

C: What character do you identify with most?

Ummm…My female OC from Winter’s Legacy, Kyra. She lost her mom at a young age and is a bit of a sarcastic shit lol She’s smart and savvy, caring and thoughtful, and I aspire to be as cool as her lol 

E: If you wrote a sequel to [Unholy], what would it be about?

It would be about Angel and Father Brolin’s future life together; their daily lives, their jobs, their love. 

F: Care to share a favorite hurt/comfort fic?

One I’m writing now that’s not strictly hurt/comfort but definitely has those elements is Sunshine and Whiskey. It’s a Bethyl Canon Divergence, and it’s definitely angsty and sweet and beautiful. 

G: Care to share a favorite crack fic?

I don’t really have a crack fic? It’s just not something I write :/ 

H: How would you describe your style?

I’d say it’s a mix of things. But I love writing relationships (romantic or otherwise) that are realistic and complicated and heartfelt. I aim to write characters that fight and fuck and have real fears, needs and complicated emotions. I like to explore all the ways we as humans feel and react to the world around us, how we love and hate and believe…I like to poke into the dark places of humanity and see what comes crawling out. 

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?

Well…I definitely don’t have a problem writing angst, as you all know lol 

Probably one of the angstiest things I’ve written to date is my Longmire fic The Names of Our Shadows. It focuses on the human trafficking, rape and murder of Native American women, something I’ve learned about in great detail from the work I do. 

Probably one of the angstiest things I’ve written for that story is this;

Her eyes struggled to remain open and when they met Mathias’s onyx eyes, wide with fear, trying to be hopeful for her, she mustered up a faint smile in return and squeezed the hand she knew was his.

Her heart skipped irregularly and she thought distantly how silly it was to finally feel her heart skip over this man when she had been falling for him for months.

“She’s arresting!”

Pain lit up every nerve ending in her body, spreading from her chest, tendrils of it wrapping around her lungs, choking the scream she ached to let loose in her throat. Her spine arched from the table as she writhed, broken cries falling from her lips.

Mathias fell back against the wall of the chopper as it rose into the air, flying as fast as it could towards the hospital. Horror filled him as he watched Cady bleed and scream, her cries weakening as her heart did.

When the line on the monitor went flat, the world dropped out from under him.

We’ve been hanging hard with my Dad this week in Montana. Days filled with skiing, good eats, good long chats & stories, and late night episodes of Longmire. My Dad is a special man, and knowing too many close friends who no longer have their parents, I cherished our time in honor of all your Moms and Dads who’ve passed. I remind myself to be grateful, to be present and not distracted, and to ask tons of questions, learning more of my ancestors. . This digital nomadic life has been really wonderful. After a year of hardly seeing our folks, we’ve been able to spend quality time with Jake’s parents and my parents. All safe, all covid approved. . And, though my Pops left yesterday, just to show my Dad how much I love him, I got on a pair of skis 🎿 after 30 years of snowboarding 🏂 , just to ski with him!! Characters

At some point during the first week of being back in Knoxville, I made my way over to the North Knoxville branch library. I had not been inside the walls of the old library in over eight years. I guess I haven’t really been anywhere in Knoxville in over eight years. It is one thing to move to a new place where there isn't anything to match it up against, but it’s another thing to return to a place that you called home for over 20 years. It is the place where you were born and raised. I thought to myself three Christmases ago, while standing outside in the front yard of the home that I had spent my childhood days, that it was the last time that I would sleep under that roof. I think it’s natural to hate being wrong about things, but in this instance, I am glad that I was wrong about it: being the final night that I would lay my head down inside the walls of the old brown house on the hill. Being back inside of those walls has made my mind wander to things that I had long forgotten about. I suppose that we forget things over the years in order to make room for the new things. Just the other day I was at the top of the stairs, about to walk down to the basement to hop in the truck to go and grab some provisions, and could hear my brother say, “I can’t find my coat.” Obviously my brother, Kelly, wasn’t there, and his voice has deepened to a lower tone over the years - but it seemed so real. We would always hang our coats by the stairs in order to keep up with them, but needless to say: they didn’t always end up there. They would get carried back to a bedroom or left inside the car. I could not help but answer out loud to let Kelly know that his coat wasn’t here anymore.

Wikipedia describes “The Golden Hour” as the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset during which daylight is redder and softer than when the sun is higher in the sky. I have always associated “golden hour” more with the color gold and fond memories. It seems that, over 29 years of life, I find myself inside the North Knoxville Library just as the Golden Hour is approaching outside. The windows in the library sit just above the top of each book shelf that surround the indoor perimeter of the building. The final moments of sunlight creep through the windows to slumber inside the walls of the library, as if returning to its nighttime residence. I wouldn't blame the sunlight for wanting to stay here; it has always been a safe and inviting place.

When I was a kid, especially in the summer, I would load up on books about sharks and R. L. Stine's Goosebumps series. I would come out of the library carrying my weight in books. While we could not always convince Mom to take us to Blockbuster (the now-defunct video rental store), we could usually convince her on a trip to the library. I have not always been disciplined about reading, but I think that it is one of the most important things that you can spend your time doing. It is a really big deal that is often forgotten due to our “screen time” lives. I read to go places. I’ve traveled all over throughout the years to places that I have never been and might never see. I love characters. I think about the characters that I have interacted with in books over the years most days, if they left a lasting impression. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch of the Appaloosa series by Robert B. Parker might as well be living in New Mexico currently. Anytime that I am out in Wyoming on The High Plains, I’m keeping an eye out for the high sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire. I figure that I owe the sheriff several Rainiers.

I’d ventured into the local branch to see if I could still get a library card. I was greeted by a familiar face at the desk: Tammy, a librarian, who's been at the branch for as far back as I can recall. She was kind and warm, just like I had remembered her to be. I assume that my question-asking tally exceeded its limit at some point over the years with her. I have requested some ancient western books and films over the years, but Tammy has never failed to come through for me on finding the material. What a big deal a librarian is: facilitators of great adventure and knowledge,  and possibly the most patient people walking the Earth. Tammy had a few questions for me and I explained to her that I'd moved back to Knoxville and wanted to activate a card again. She confirmed that my card was still active after all of these years. The way that we found record of it was the old address that was associated with it, the same address that I call home “again” now. I could not help but think on all of the books and films that would be on the history of that card. Various sharks, monsters, secret agents, and cowboys would make up most of it. I don’t think that Tammy recognized me, but I sure recognized her because she was important to me growing up, a character. She asked if I was looking for anything specifically, and I let her know that I was just going to browse the shelves and see if anything caught my eye.

After searching through the fiction section, I naturally landed on a western. I took the hardback book with several miles on it up to the front to check out, and another character from my past was there: Michael, the other librarian at the branch, had started while I was in high school. He was just getting settled into the job when I left for Middle Tennessee. I recall Michael making several classic film suggestions that were wonderful when I had slipped into a Golden Era film phase. After Michael had checked the book out and handed me the due back receipt he said, “It has been awhile since you have been in.” I was taken aback in the best way; he remembered me. Michael had no way of knowing how out of place I had felt that last week with the move and all. He didn’t know that it had been a bit of an emotional drive back through the old neighborhood on my way to the library. He didn’t know how nice it felt to be recognized inside of a place that you've loved so much over the years.

Michael and I spoke on the passing of time and how long it had been. We briefly talked about things that had happened in life, a quick version of the last eight years. Tammy came up after Michael had made the connection of them knowing me and reintroduced herself. It was like running into two old friends from the past. I’ve seen other people over the last two weeks that I’ve not seen for sometime here in Knoxville: characters. I think we never know what impact, if any, that we have on those around us. I’m thankful for those who have come in and out of my life. They are all characters, and it is big story.

There’s so much to unpack wtf. Firstly the acting is sooooo subpar but I already strapped in for the long haul cause Kat is my girl, loved her in longmire.

Pros:

A damn fine premise as a syfy buff myself it’s really cool to see what they have to offer for the vistor/ thing from another world angle.

The cast is so good so far but there’s so qualms I have about the acting.

They just jumped right in and I love a hit the ground running type of show so yay.

There new-ish sci-fi terms and I’m hear for it love so healthy changes to classics.

The mutiny was so left field but it’s a plus for drama

Zyan is so one I want to get to know.

Niko is a total mom from the get go, she like I don’t have time for you guys shit I here to save the earth and go home.

William is a total hottie with his fine ass.

Nikos a total savage and just iced Ian can he’s a sociopath like one more mutiny and he’d but a full psychopath for sure. He was coming for Nikos neck.

Cons:

Did you notice my pros where pretty lame, well fucking guess what these cons are overwhelming.

Firstly, everyone are literally that weird cult of 6 year olds at daycare that won’t play with you cause your new and they’ve got no real power structure just this asinine pack mentally.

The engineer is like literally a child.

The conflict is just high school bullying but in a super specific way. Like really specific. Custom bullshit.

Ian “when have i ever been rash” Yerxa can kiss my ass. They say that and totally drove home that homies literally permenant ezcema. Niko tried to break the ice and Ill say it, she is like 100 years old but like bruh she’s a seasoned veteran (I think that’s what they were trying to say) and she trying to keep these kids alive.

How old are you people. Ian’s like 30 or older maybe but the rest are like 20 something and I think the Latina (forgive me I didn’t here her name) said like 27 or younger cause again the engineers like 10. She sounds like my 4 year old.

Where this show going

Okay so like Ian’s a little bitch why corner this woman and basically turn her into a vegetable cause she said not his dumb ass plan. Ive watch sci-fi my whole life and hearing him say he has a this shortcut plan in episode one of all times is just a cluster fuck of deaths waiting to happen.
