MY ASSESSMENT OF EP 1 OF MEGAMIND RULES! - MEGAMIND VS DUDE MONKEY
I'm going to be going through each episode of MEGAMIND RULES! to review them! Basically state my opinions and talk about how much I love Megamind and the things he does and stuff
Starting with episode 1, obviously.
S1 E1: Megamind vs Dude Monkey
I love the Megamind DreamWorks intro. I'm so happy we have one that was made specifically for him, at long last. It's perfect, too -- Megamind is the man (kid) on the moon, fishing for Chum. Brilliant! And the fact Megamind gets pulled down pahahaa
--
The theme is incredible, everyone knows it. I particularly love when Megamind throws the bags of money, we do a little spin around him, and then he kisses us. If I'd never seen him before, this would be the moment that I succumbed to his handsome-ry.
--
"You've met your match, Evildoer! For I, Megamind, am the hero of Metrocity! And you will feel my… steely justice with the force of a… an angrly llama!" -- Megamind working on his new act. He's used to spouting villainy, this is hard! "I think you're improving, sir! That's way better than attacking their mothers personally!"
--
"Villains, beware! For I am the White Knight of --" I assume he was going to say 'Metrocity'. I love the Batman references (The Dark Knight of Gotham). I am a huge Batman fan so to have Batman peppered throughout Megamind content is truly delighful.
--
Dude Monkey reminds me of Ron from Kim Possible. Except horrible. HAHA the subtitles when Dude Monkey says "shall we stop another crime?" are actually "shall we SCHTOP--" which is exactly how he pronounces it, HAHA! That's hilarious.
--
Megamind: What IS that thing?! (I love that he doesn't realize Dude Monkey is a person.)
--
Dude Monkey is so annoyingly obnoxious! Megamind: What in Hades' hamper just happened?! (That's such a good exclamation.)
--
Roxanne saying "I don't have actual control over the sun" feels like a Mr. Burns reference. Would that make Christina Christo Smithers? You know, I can see it.
--
Megamind breaking through the window and innocently Ollo-ing only to get a monitor thrown at his face is pure gold. Roxanne really has a thing for throwing things at people, doesn't she? She did it to Music Man in the original film too HAHA! She calls it "muscle memory", I wonder if she means "back when you were Evil and I had to defend myself". But DID she really even defend herself physically from Megamind back then? Hmm… we really need more content from the old Evil days.
--
Megamind likes tacos! Important! He also likes toquitos, chocolate milk, coffee, kombucha, and donuts, as I recall! Perhaps I missed something. If so, I'll find out soon enough (since I'm going to be going through the entire series again with Notice-Things Goggles on).
--
Megamind @ Nighty-Knight: "If he pops his Halloween head up again, I have just the treat for his tricks!" These lines are TOO good.
--
Megamind using the word "bombastic", PFFT! It fits right in with the others words often tied to him. "Mega", for example, and "Swag" (promotional items). "Uber" was also a popular word in the live-action script. I feel like all these words are a part of the same package. Also -- Bombastic apparently doesn't mean what it SOUNDS like it means. I was thinking "bomb" as in "amazing" and "tastic" as in "fantastic" but it's actually more of a negative term. I have a feeling Megamind didn't realize that either.
--
"Why hire a second-rate wanna-be when you can have a first-rate is-a-be?" Oh my God, Brent and Alan, I know they're the ones coming up with these lines, they're hilarious. This episode is super funny, every one of Megamind's lines are pure gold. You can really tell how much effort they put into writing the characters, especially his.
--
I love when Megamind nee-nah nee-nah nee-nah's Christina, maahahaha!
--
"What about that icèd cream you promised?" It's interesting, in the subtitles it has a little dash over the e (è) to convey the pronounciation. "Primarily used in languages like French, Italian, Catalan, and others to represent a slightly open 'e' sound." Fascinating! I just watched an episode of the Simpsons where Mr. Burns refers to it as icèd cream, as well -- I do think the creators were inspired!
Oh, ice-cream! He likes ice-cream, as well!
Food Megamind Eats (will be copy+pasting this to other posts if he eats other stuff and I need to add to it): Tacos, toquitos, chocolate milk, coffee, kombucha, donuts, ice-cream
--
"Time to get my blue bod ripped" pahahaha, I love that he can go from using the dialect of an elderly man from the 1920s to talking like a teenage boy who's been living in a frat house amongst his peers for the past 2 years.
--
I love that Megamind thinks Dude Monkey looks up to him and is inspired by him -- seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, I love that about him. (Have I mentioned that I love things Megamind does yet?)
--
"What's with this troll business? They've been extinct for decades!" I'm really curious if there are actual trolls in their world (wouldn't be far-fetched, there are aliens and shadow-people), or if Megamind just THINKS trolls existed in their world. If they did exist, I'm imagining it's something he learned when he was still on his home planet (maybe mom was telling him a bed-time story about the long-lost troll and then clarified that they are extinct once he expressed fear. I realize I'm totally making this all up but let's go with it).
Keiko really is a necessary addition to future (technically present) Megamind content, because Megamind himself has been so sheltered and secluded that he would have NO idea what's going on, ever. Her being there to assist him is pretty important!
--
Hehe they used an edited version of one of my favorite promotional images of Megamind! "It's big for a reason!"
--
"I went viral on Metrocity once! Gave everyone dance fever!" Hahaha I love that, it'd be great to see that. I hope the next theatrical Megamind movie is a prequel and we get to see more of Megamind and Metroman's battles, and get to see Machiavillain training him, and also get to see how Megamind met Roxanne! What a dream that would be! Also, giving everyone dance fever reminds me of Rachett and Clank with the Groovitron (a floating disco ball that, when thrown, plays disco music that mesmerizes anyone near it to dance uncontrollably until it expires)!
--
Megamind's little dance when he "wins" the point-battle is great (I giffed that)!
--
"Make me virulent on the onternet!" (Virulent: (of a disease or poison) extremely severe or harmful in its effects.) Hehehee
--
Chum being entertained by a baby dancing just like a grown-up is pretty funny, given that's what baby Megamind was doing in some old commercials HAHA! Also, there was apparently a dancing baby meme back in 1996 that was/is really popular, I wonder if that's what they're referring to. I bet so!
youtube
--
"Villains are red, heroes are blue. Stop robbing that bank, or feel my Kung Fu! Or, you know, I'll think of something later." I love that Megamind can seem egotistical at times, but he's actually quite self-conscious and self-questioning. He puts on the 'I'm the best' act to cover up his insecurities. I also think it was his way of giving himself what nobody else would (except Minion), considering he was looked down upon and was alone for so long!
--
"Treading the boards" is a term that originated in the 1700s. The question we've all been asking -- IS Megamind geriatric? Technically, no, but he definitley does have a tendency to use out-dated terms/phrases. Which makes him all the more lovable! (I love Megamind, by the way)
--
Megamind Before He's On Camera: Hello, my biggest fans! Megamind here!
Megamind Once He's On Camera: Hello, my biggest fans! Your little fannies will shake as you worship the splendor that is --
So real. You know how it is, when you're just existing, and then suddenly you're existing but on camera? It changes everything you ever knew about how to exist!!!
--
De-ep Freeze, De-Sintigrate, De-Gravity, De-Moralize, De-Lock, De-hydrate! Those were some of the features on his De-Gun that I was able to see! (I'll update this as we go, too.)
--
Dude Monkey: Say "Megamind's Cheugy!" (That apparently means "something or someone out of date or trying too hard.")
--
Megamind being obsessed with views, man I've been there! When you're trying to make a living off the onternet, and rely on views to make said-living, you get kinda obsessive! I love that Megamind puts his all into learning how to be up-to-date with slang terms haha! He really did learn quite a lot!
--
"Only 100 views?! Why haven't I become a virus yet?!" He's so adorable. I would rewatch his stuff a THOUSAND times if I could! … Oh, wait, I do. (I imagine Megamind just coming into my room and being like "kinda creepy, but flattering…!")
--
Megamind being scared that he's become "unpopular". That's interesting to think about, even when he was a villain, he was loathed, but he wasn't unpopular. They LOVED loathing him! He was Metrocity's Number One Supervillain!
--
Keiko then tries to help him, and he shuts her down! He decides to take matters into his own hands! He's too impatient to do as she requests and just wait it out! He's on his way to seek INSTANT gratification!
--
Oh my Gooodd, Dude Monkey is the wooorrrssstttt! And Christina is a bully! I have to assume she's cruel to Megamind out of jealousy, but jealous or not, that's my man she's bullying! Cut it out, woman! And I don't know why, but it's super funny to me when Megamind refers to her by name. "Heelarious, CHRISTINA!" I think it's so funny because they're acting like a couple of highschoolers who are fighting over the hunky football player.
--
Oh, this is the best part! Megamind trying out all the different disguises and personas haha! This is him using everything he learned whilst browsing the onternet!
"If this is the hero Metrocity wants me to be, THEN SO! SHALL! I! BE! IT!"
"Crimes a-poppin'! Daaang!" HAHAHA he's such a dork, I love him. "Scope that! Crime much, am I right?" HAHAHA "You'll LOL as I trick-shot these handcuffs right on Nighty-Knight's wrists!"
"Nah! Crime-stopping rocks!" "CRIME-A-DOODLE-DON'T!" (best line ever hahahaha)
Oohh, cowboy Megamind is delightful, he's been my phone background since this episode came out last year on March 1st (I can't believe it's almost been a year already, 2024 FLEW by)! BACKSLASH RAD!
--
So funny that Chum gets obsessed with memes hahaha, new special interest activated!
--
"Imagine her telling me I don't know what I'm doing!" (-RECAP- Keiko really is a necessary addition, because Megamind himself has been so sheltered and secluded that he would have NO idea what's going on, ever. Her being there to assist him is pretty important! -END RECAP-)
--
Roxanne: I need a 30 minute nap after eating three chicken wings! (Paahhaha)
--
Another incredible line: "On my way to the hospital. My back is LOUSY with stab wounds." This is Megamind's way of calling Roxanne a back-stabber HAHAHA
I do love that Roxanne WANTED to pick Megamind though, and that it was just the city that preferred Dude Monkey. She agrees Dude Monkey is dumb! Yay! "Dumb-ocracy, am I right?" "You can't unspoil my sour mood with mayoral dad jokes, Roxi."
--
"I posses super intelligence, otherworldly handsomeness, and selfless humility. Yet, I am felled by a bananalamadingdong." 1.) The first sentence has such "I decided to pick something a bit more humble; MEGAMIND! Incredibly handsome, criminal genius and master of all villainy!" vibes, 2.) HE'S EATING CHIPS! HE ALSO LIKES CHIPS! ADDING THAT TO THE LIST OF FOOD MEGAMIND EATS
Food Megamind eats: Tacos, toquitos, chocolate milk, coffee, kombucha, donuts, ice-cream, chips
There's also a Chinese food box, an applejuice box, and a soda cup on the floor! I wonder if that was from him or from Keiko? We later find out Keiko throws her garbage right on the floor of the Lair so I'm not sure! It wouldn't surprise me, though, if Megamind was the one to consume those things. He eats to comfort himself, as later episodes prove.
--
Megamind truly fears people laughing at him! He really doesn't want to come off as a "bafoon" in any way. He prides himself on his Mega-Mindery, for a while that's all he felt he had going for him -- plus, I mean, his very NAME is based on how intelligent he is. He expresses fear at being laughed at in the original film, too -- being in his jammies in front of Roxanne terrifies him! Running away from the pieces of Metroman's statue after he blew it up "I hope no one's seeing this!" Also there was concept art of Megamind as a kid being laughed at by all the students at school because he dressed up as a superhero and wore a wig. MEAN! I think it's part of why he doesn't like being laughed at and does what he can to ensure he isn't. Trauma!
--
Little Terry Sasko Says: I love that Megamind messes up just like me. In a weird way, that's inspiring. (So real)
This whole episode ties in really well with the original film, with Megamind wanting to be something he's not. He always has trouble with that; he wants to be perceived in a very specific way -- and that way is whatever gets him the most positive attention. My boy has trauma and he needs hugs (from Roxanne. Also kisses).
--
It's kinda funny, but what Nighty-Knight's up to is obvious if you pay attention to HIM during his scenes earlier in the episode. I… was not paying attention to him, at all. Had no idea what he was doing. Too busy looking at Megamind. ALSO -- it's hilarious how Megamind is coming off as a genius as he explains his thought process, but it's more like everyone else is just dumb (looking at you, Chum). HAHA!
--
Roxanne: Please give me good news, like a meteor is heading this way so I don't have to listen to this speech. (HAHAHA ROXANNE, she can have a dark sense of humor, it's great.)
I just heard Dude Monkey in the background saying "fish don't have lungs like humans do. They have gills!" (SHOCK AND AWE!!!)
--
Nighty-Knighty: You dare talk confusingly to the Duke of Darkness?? (Nighty-Knight is by far my favorite member of the Doom Syndicate, he's hilarity shadowified.)
--
Dude Monkey saying "we so do not have the budget for this!" when Nighty-Knight starts using his powers -- I bet the writers added that in there because it was an actual concern! I mean, really, can you imagine being given only a certain amount of money, and having to know what you can/can't do based on the amount you have? That sounds like it'd get really complicated. (I think that's why sometimes in movies, in one scene the CGI will be fantastic and in the next scene it'll be sub-par, more of the money went toward one scene than the other.)
--
"Welcome to MEGAMIND'S RULES FOR DEFENDING YOUR CITY!" That's the name of his channel, apparently! That was also the title, or at least the working title, of this series when it was first announced!
--
Dude Monkey and his friend remind me of the guys from "Dude, Where's My Car?"
--
WOAH, I just realized Megamind said "Metro City" instead of "Metrocity" for the first time this ep! Ha! We do know he's capable of saying words correctly, he just tends not to, or forgets to. But when on camera, or when he knows he shouldn't, he changes it (such as right now, where he is on camera for his channel)! That happened in the original movie, too, where he's about to say "shool" to Roxanne as Bernaard, but quickly changes it to "school". It also happens in a later episode, when Megamind and Roxanne swap bodies. I think he categorizes things in his brain, and when one folder is open, the other is closed, so he is on and off with things depending on which folder is open. Kind of like he goes into modes. THIS Mega-mode doesn't say that, but the OTHER Mega-mode does.
--
OH, more features on the De-Gun revealed! I know some new ones were added, or some were replaced, so I'm going at it as if it's a gun with new features. Meaning I'm not going based off what I know to be true about the De-Gun in the original film.
So now we have: De-ep Freeze, De-sintigrate, De-Gravity, De-Moralize, De-Lock, De-hydrate, De-stroy, De-bilitate.
(ignore that I focused on "de-bilitate" twice)
--
Megamind after he freezes Nighty-Knight: Pretty chill, home boy! (HAHAHAA)
--
crowd goes wild
Megamind: "Thank you, thank you! Oh, please no, you're too much! But it is fitting." (HEHEE)
--
Chum making his own meme, and it's just a picture of Megamind with the words "Inspirational Hero ROFL"
--
1.) Nighty-Knight looks cool without his armor. He's literally a shadow person.
2.) I love holographic-brain Machiavillain. It's fun that our introduction to the character was him as a holographic brain. It makes you wonder what he really looks like! I'll bet he was peeved at being a holographic brain when he's so obsessed with his hair.
--
I'd say it's my 11th favorite episode! There are 16, so 11 of 16.
1 - Thrilling Conclusions 2 - Extra Credit 3 - A Cake for Keiko 4 - Villain City 5 - Who Wants to Save a City 6 - Game Over 7 - Mission: Machia Fest 8 - The Art of Destruction 9 - Blue Prison 10 - MegaMayor 11 - Megamind vs Dude Monkey 12 - Roach Hard: With a Vengeance 13- Hero for a Day 14 - The Villanous Origin of Mr. Donut 15 - Of Mice That Are Men 16 - Too Much Chum

Season 1B of Megamind Rules is a marked improvement over 1A. It's a little funnier, the story was unpredictable throughout, and I've grown a soft spot for the new side cast. Machiavillain is also a surprisingly compelling and memorable bad guy.
Overall, this continuation isn't too bad once you get past how its initial premise makes no sense in context to the original film.

What are your thoughts on Schaffrillas?
Oh Anon I really hope this is being sent in good faith and isn't just bait because well. Hm.
I want to like the dude. I do. Without his review of Megamind (2010) I'm not sure Megamind would have had such a resurgeance that it's had in the recent years. And for a long time, I deeply respected the dude for that.
But I also had slowly fallen into the youtube trap of what I will not-so-affectionately call "ragebait youtubers", which are people who profit off of whatever new piece of media is the Big Thing To Hate. I was subscribed to a bunch of them, and had my big laughs at all the new "terrible" media coming out, for years.
And then suddenly Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate was the new thing to hate. It was no longer funny. At all. Everyone I subscribed to dogpiled onto it and collectively sabotaged the series following it (many of which were people regurgitating things every other reviewer was saying, often getting things wrong about either Vs The Doom Syndicate or the show following it, Megamind Rules, if they even knew the show existed at all). The Rotten Tomatoes reviews tanked. The screenwriters got threats of violence on their personal blogs, one person actually stating that they wished they could cut their hands off so they could never write again. (Hi, what the fuck?) The Megamind tags were flooded by hate. The fans that DID like the new stuff were dogpiled and told they were stupid Dreamworks shills being paid to promote the new stuff. Nobody believed that there were actual fans that actually liked the new stuff, because the fans of people who do ragebait youtuber shit are miserable, unhappy people who fail to see joy in anything new just because it isn't 100% perfect.
My biggest gripe with Schaffrillas is the fanbase he caters to these days. I have not watched his newest videos about the new Megamind stuff (I refuse to watch any of it; I refuse to give these people my views for their blatant misinformation and hostility towards something "mid" at worst) but there was a SIGNIFICANT uptick in both hate in the fandom tags and harassment to both fans and the screenwriters on twitter, here, youtube, ANYWHERE-- after his video. I don't believe this was his actual intention, he's obviously not a dick, but I refuse to entertain the idea that his intention with his newest videos wasn't careless. "Why Megamind 2 Is A Cinematic Disaster" is a title implying the lie that Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate is something that should be held up to the same standard as a theatrical "Megamind 2" and the dude is smart enough to know exactly that. The thing is, it ISN'T "Megamind 2", it's an extended pilot episode to a low budget straight-to-streaming show that is actually very damn good. Before Schaffrillas even got to review it, before it even released, I had seen news outlets falsely labeling it as "Megamind 2" in the same way, getting people's hopes up. I asked the screenwriters in a (now deleted because Elon sucks and lots of people fled the site) twitter post if they considered the film/series to be a proper sequel on par with a title like "Megamind 2" or not, and the response was basically "we just consider it a continuation of his story", aka what I took away from it: "No. Not a grand theatrical sequel like everyone is implying. But more stuff, regardless." My own expectations going in were lower, because of this, and I wasn't as greatly disappointed as everyone else who was under the impression this would be some high-budget Puss In Boots The Last Wish level production. Not these people's fault! News outlets and youtubers BOTH painted this film like it was supposed to be more!!
And the kicker to all of that is Dreamworks fully failed to promote Megamind Rules properly. In the advertising for Vs The Doom Syndicate, the show is mentioned as an afterthought at the end, as if there isn't like 7hrs of content behind that film to still watch after, that the writers/artists put blood/sweat/tears into for years beforehand. I assume there was a lot of push to have a pilot episode get turned into a "movie" even though it would have been better as maybe two episodes. But the backlash from the internet seemed to have hurt the Megamind Team SO BAD that the advertising for the 2nd half of the first season didn't even get finished. One of the team members slipped the unfinished ad video onto twitter finally. The ONLY people who advertised the 2nd half of the series were the Megamind Team themselves, and the fans who liked the show. Dreamworks social media was absolutely silent about it, choosing to promote everything else instead. Ragebait youtubers, and this culture of hating EVERY new piece of media that comes out, whether it deserves it or not (spoilers: it rarely ever does) had damaged the future of this show when it truly didn't deserve it. Dreamworks threw their hands in the air and gave up. The Megamind Team did their best to still promote it because their paychecks probably rely on it and they knew old fans still liked the new stuff even IF there was overwhelming backlash about it!
I don't think Schaffrillas realizes the full impact of everything he says and does in his videos these days. I don't know if any ragebait youtuber even cares anymore, as long as they get paid by Daddy Youtube for churning out the next video as quickly as possible before anyone can watch things for themselves and form their own opinions on anything. Does Moana 2 actually suck or is youtube just feeding me videos by unwashed losers who are mad their sequel isn't Shrek 2 perfect? I don't know!! But it's all I see! "This new movie sucks!!" "This new show sucks!!" "This new game sucks!!" holy shit! The reason I -LIKED- people making videos about Megamind before all of this was because the reception was generally entirely positive! People were talking about it because they LIKED it! Schaffrillas, give me a video over a damn hour about everything you LIKE about Megamind and I'll freakin' watch it. I will NOT sit there for an hour listening to someone complain about a piece of media they could just stop watching or walk away from and choose to go watch anything else the actually LIKE instead. IDK!! Idk. I'm old, I'm cranky, I'm tired. I'm glad people have mostly moved on by now and I can have a shred of normalcy back in the tags again. But it will forever be marred and ugly from all the hate from everyone shitting on the newest stuff (whether it deserves it or not) and I will forever be nervous to promote my fandom server to new fans for fear of one of these big youtubers dropping another "this movie sucks" video and their fans going to the tags on various sites to find ways to grief the fanbases for liking something "so horrible". Which, yes, already happened. A lot. (We banned a lot of people this year when we rarely ever had to before this :/)
I don't know if the dude realizes the bridges he's burned, both in the Megamind fandom and with various Dreamworks employees (not just about Megamind, mind you, but also other recent things he's said). This is NOT the way to get anywhere if that's what he's trying to do. It's just going to get him remembered as the dude who made people lose money/jobs because they couldn't make a budget larger from thin air, or couldn't read minds on what would be considered "good enough" to a larger swath of fans of something.
The Megamind Team is full of really good people who really did do a good job and tried VERY HARD with A LOT going against them to make a good product that would make fans happy. It certainly made ME happy! It was consistent with the the original canon material and even borrowed from fandom theories for some things (probably unintentionally? but it's still funny to me). Somehow Schaff managed to make a video over an hour long about everything bad about it. I don't see it that way, and it must be infuriating to live in a world where you CAN find over an hour's worth of stuff to bitch about with it. Yeah, the animation is crunchy and the pilot film goes on a bit long and could have been shorter. Whoo. I'm done. It was easy. Not over an hour long.
There's also a thing about the DeGun? Idk. I don't have the full context but I assume it's about the opening scene where Megamind doesn't dehydrate the Go Fish Gang dudes as they're running away. From a writing perspective, the building should have been completely flooded with water, so it makes sense that he wouldn't. Obviously though the animators didn't have time for the water everywhere or it just got overlooked. But also, Megamind sucks at his job. That's the point. He's new and he's not good. He also canonically doesn't use his DeGun to dehydrate people well before this! Metro Man, Titan, hell-- the whole tower falling towards them at the end of the movie? There's clearly rules towards his tech that are being followed (or the guy is just an idiot idk) that we don't ever get told about, and yeah that would probably be good, but personally all I thought was "ok he's dumb but let's go XD;" when it happened and that was it. I also didn't have monetary incentive to make an hour long video about hating it, though. So. Y'know.
All I really want is for the dude to reflect on where his videos are currently heading and, again, the bridges he's burning due to the careers and lives he's hurting by going this route. I can't sit here and pat his ass for him and tell him he's doing a great job when I feel like he's doing more harm than good, and apparently that's enough reason for his fanboys to have a problem with me and harass me and other fans. Again, I want to like the dude. But at the moment I don't think I can. Maybe he's said some really nice stuff in his recent videos, I don't know! I just know how his fans reacted and how much damage it did, and I don't care to look further.
As usual I just want to say that even if you don't like the movie, the show Megamind Rules is REALLY good and the ending is fantastic and satisfying. It's worth sticking it out, but you HAVE to try to put aside the urge to hatewatch and instead just watch for fun. This stuff is meant to be ENJOYED. Stop holding yourselves back from that. The world is hateful enough already.
#Megamind#pls don't send his fanbase on me I don't have energy for this shit#it's been a rough year#rude comments will get you blocked btw I don't have the energy to entertain it with a response

I have now watched Megamind Rules! and have been pleasantly surprised...
I usually do my reviews as a good first bad last but since there's so little bad, let's start with that this time.
Megamind and Roxanne's relationship and the insistence on friends grates a little, it's not the worst thing in the world, but I could use some more soft looks or touches, they were dating! They saved the city together! That counts for something!
Only other negative thing is that ep1 has some of the lack luster writing from the new film and goes hard on the 'oh look an older generation all person who doesn't know tech' when Megamind is a technical genius. Him not knowing the internet? Sure fine though they're supposed to be buying their Tesla coils and blinky dials from a warehouse in Romania, how if not online? But the insistence at him not knowing what a TV is when he has a bunch in his lair as monitors, idk, didn't like that aspect.
Now then for the good.
The quips are really on it, the writing once it settles into 'this is the scenario we have' is really enjoyable and compelling. Machiavillian is so good, the whole game being an elaborate set up was such good writing. Bringing back the Binkey, as a source of power, yes please. Megamind's backstory being that he accidentally killed him? Excellent, love that for the blue idiot, very in character.
Speaking of Megamind being in character, oh my god was he. He was amazingly chaotic and insane and a nice mixture of genius and incompetent. The body swap ep with him running the city was astounding. Hats off to the new voice actors, they really managed to let you know that this was Megamind looking like Roxanne and Roxanne looking like Megamind.
Roxanne came into her own, I'm not happy with *how* they got to her being the mayor, but she is killing it in the role she's been handed. Her dealing with Megamind and Christina bickering is an excellent call back to her having to deal with Megamind and Metro Man quipping back and forth. The cake baking scene was hilarious. I do wish she had been involved more in the investigation side of things, and I do wonder if that's why they gave her the role as mayor, so there's an excuse for her being so busy and no longer a nosy reporter. So that a certain someone else can share the spotlight.
Speaking of that certain someone, Keiko started to grow on me as her push for social media eased off and she became more of an apprentice and a member of the team. I think having a kid who looks up to Megamind but who isn't perfect and struggles to find her place in the world fits in really well with the rest of the cast. Just, let her be that rather than an annoying social media star.
Minion is perfect and has never done anything wrong ever. Except change his name, but we're ignoring that. (Though more on that later).
The Doom Syndicate in this was very good as their antics were more background or focused to one or two eps, it let them breathe as characters and showed them being competent at times, and useless at others. An excellent balance for Megamind's old team.
Overall, when the writers were saying 'this is the story we've been wanting to tell for a long long time' and I saw the film I went 'no, surely not, surely this isn't the story that has been swimming around in your head for 15 years' and it's bc it's not. It is very clearly the build up to ep8 that is the focus. The big show down, the big game across the city, the gaslighting the entire city into believing that Megamind has returned to villainy, that excellent and compelling writing is the core of Megamind and is exactly what I was hoping for. I just wish they had had more time to think about exactly how they wanted to get there instead of crowbarring it in.
To me, they shouldn't have started with a film, they should have done a star wars style summary of this is where we're at now along the lines of "After a long life of villainy, Megamind is now the hero of Metro City. After two long days hard at work as this new hero, Megamind's old team, the Doom Syndicate returns... With the city in chaos, Roxanne takes a step away from the TV camera to the Metro City white house to become the new mayor, while a young internet savvy tween called Keiko joins Megamind's team in the hopes of becoming a superhero herself one day. We return as Megamind is, once again, getting his blue butt kicked." And then cut to the end of the film and have that as ep 1.
No nonsense with Minion leaving, again, or if he does, have it be over something new! Maybe include the name change but in a compelling way such as.
Mn: Sir, I've been thinking-
MM: Now now Minion, I do the thinking around here
Mn: I know Sir, you're very good at it Sir. But I- I don't think I want to be called Minion anymore...
MM: Don't want- but... That was the name my mother gave you, your name is one of the few things we have left from home...
Mn: ...I know, Sir, but, I don't want to be just a minion anymore- I'm not just a minion anymore! I'm your friend! I've been thinking about this long and hard and-
MM: well clearly you haven't thought long enough!!! How could you throw away your name like that? If mother had given me a name I...
Mn: I'm sorry Sir, I don't want to throw away such a gift. It just doesn't suit me anymore...
MM: well... Well, maybe, maybe we don't suit each other right now...
Mn: Okay Sir, I'll give you time to think about it.
And then have him working in the donut shop, and hey maybe the donut guy has called him Buddy. Have Roxanne talk to Megamind about how names define who we are and if he wants a new name, he should be able to pick out a new name. Make it a queer analogy! Have Megamind realise his mistake and talk to Minion about it, like:
MM: Mi- hello, old friend.
Mn: Previous Sir!
MM: Previous- oh, oh I see.
Mr Donut: Hey Buddy! Nice to see you settling in.
MM: Buddy?
Mn: My new name... It's not... Ideal, but I'm trying it out.
MM: Oh. Well. I'll leave you to try out new names then...
Mn: Sir, wait! You didn't let me finish what I wanted to say earlier. I don't want just any new name, I'm asking you to give me a new name, a name I can be proud of! If the name comes from you, doesn't that still come from home?
MM: I... I suppose it does old friend! No! Ol'Chum. Do you like that name? Chum?
Mn: it's perfect!
And like then it has sentimental value, Minion leaving has a point! It has new character growth! It's about growing and learning and changing and adapting and how sometimes you have to let the past go, no matter how sentimental it may be, to move on to the future. I might write this fic.
Anyway! I got very off track. My point is that, the end result of the new Megamind stuff is amazing, I love it, and I am excited to see where they go to next and for the love of everything - Dreamworks, give the team more money and more time! The next installment should be a new movie, now is the time for a proper movie budget, the set up is there now!
#megamind#as a warning this is long#and devolves into me musing about a re-write of the new movie#i apologise in advance

"What if Metro Man had a sidekick? (Version 1)"
A month ago, "Megamind Rules!" aired on Peacock to negative reviews. I dared myself to see that show to see if it was as bad as everyone made it out to be, only for me to find out that it was more mediocre than terrible. But before that show was even announced, I had two possible "What if..." scenarios regarding Metro Man. This is the first version of my "Megamind What if...".
As everyone probably knows, the movie was meant to be a parody of "Superman". Heck, Metro Man can be seen as an expy of Superman. And it got me thinking, if Metro Man had a puppy dog with him when he and Megamind were babies sent to earth in escape pods, he would've been called "Metro Mutt", who's supposed to be a parody of Superman's dog, Krypto. Metro Mutt would have the same powers as Metro Man, but could be more intelligent that his owner. My thought was that if he saw his master being weakened with copper, he would've been devastated when he sees what looked like a skeleton wearing Metro Man's cape, implying his death.
And with Metro Mutt in despair, Roxanne Ritchi would've adopted him as the only thing she would have left of Metro Man. In fact, whenever Megamind turns into Bernard with his Disguise Generator Watch, Metro Mutt would angrily growl at Bernard and try to attack him, only for Roxanne to shoo him away despite his warnings. But after the disastrous dinner when Megamind morphs from Bernard to his normal self, Roxeanne would've realized Metro Mutt was telling the truth all along, and could later apologize to the dog.
Despite the differences Metro Mutt and Megamind have, they still work together to find Metro Man, who has revealed himself to have retired being a superhero by faking his death. I was thinking that if Metro Mutt did get to see his owner again, seeing that he's still alive, maybe Metro Mutt would've retired too, since I thought he should go wherever his owner goes (assuming Metro Man can have a spot in the music industry for his pet).
This may not be a perfect storyline, but that's just one of my "what if" scenarios. And if you ask about if Metro Mutt should be able to talk, I'd probably say that he could (similar to the Cartoon Network show, "Krypto the Superdog"), or just have his talking be from his perspective as everyone else would only just hear dog noises coming from Metro Mutt (similar to works like "Madagascar", "Ratatouille", or even "The Secret Life of Pets").

No, it's a show targeted at kids. The age range is 6+. Hell, the original movie was targeted at kids, but hey, it somehow appeals to a lot of adults too! And that's awesome!
The original writers, Brent Simons and Alan Schoolcraft are both the head writers and executive producers have always been involved in it.
And it's bold to assume that parents never showed the kids the original movie. It was literally streaming on youtube for free barely 6 months ago. My 4-year-old niece watches it on repeat.
The problem here is that there is a PLETHORA of scorn that people feel the need to slap on a show, and team, when Dreamworks didn't bother to give them the budget that they needed to meet the unreasonably high expectations of "so-called" fans.
None of this is to say that you're not allowed to be disappointed, but direct your disappointment and anger at the company that, for whatever reason, loves to shit on a good thing and not at the individuals who worked hard, putting so much effort into creating something, that honestly, really is beautiful.
I distinctly made the original post by itself stating that I won't engage in negative reviews in Fan content. It causes me, great pains to say that, but It is what It is.
Again, you're entitled to your opinion, but I don't have to hear about it.
I see a lot of of awesome Megamind fanart that I'd LOVE to reblog...
and then I see negativity about Megamind Rules and Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate. I want to engage and share the work, but I can't encourage that kind of negativity. >:/
"There is no Megamind 2! >:<" You're right, DINGUS, because it's never been CALLED Megamind 2! All the hates call it Megamind 2!!
Also, you're not the targeted audience! Let people enjoy things! I guarantee your life would be much happier if you engaged in things you enjoyed instead of ripping on things you hate all the time.
#megamind#megamind vs the doom syndicate#megamind rules#dreamworks#I have zero patience anymore on this.

20 First Lines
I was tagged by @elf-kid2. Thanks for the tag!
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening, then tag 10 of your favorite authors!
1. A Formal Affair - Wayne knows there are benefits to having a public girlfriend.
2. Up and at 'em - "Hey," A foot nudged Roxanne's ankle, "You have to get up"
3. Forecast Wet - Ten minutes after Metro Man's sodden departure, Crying Lightning rolling through the air...
4. Clouds Out Gills Out - It was an open secret in Metro City that the rainy days were...quieter.
5. Wake Up Call - The low buzz of a vibrating phone broke the heavy darkness and Roxanne's hand groped clumsily for the screen, "What?" She asked roughly.
6. Please break me gently - Megamind makes it four steps into her apartment before he collapses.
7. Mirror Mirror - Roxanne glared at her reflection and the eighty meters of crushed princess pink tulle surrounding her body.
8. Waiting - Dear Diary, Fuck my life.
9. Hey kids lets rob a bank! - “I asked you to get me a pen!”
10. Her Mothers Daughter - It's not Cleo that Beth goes downstairs for in Paris. Its not for booze, or the pills, or a burgeoning friendship, or a desperate desire for company.
11. No one calls you honey when you're sitting on a throne - Roxanne slams her front door shut, drops her bag and relies on years of practice to stop the scream crawling up her throat.
12. and the taste of you sweet on my tongue - They say the first time you share food with your soulmate it tastes like nothing you’ve ever eaten in your life.
13. Pomegranate Seeds - She is not Persephone.
14. Better the Devil you know - Ow ow ow, fuck these fucking shoes keep going run run.
15. Date Night - Megamind was in the back room of a restaurant that served exceptional food but did its very best to discourage customers, mid negotiation with a number of very dangerous and heavily armed parties when there was a commotion outside the door.
16. Liminal Spaces - Its two hours later when Roxanne bolts upright with a curse "Shit!"
17. Run - Roxanne Ritchi, unofficial damsel and veteran of seven years of kidnappings opens her phone one day to find a text from a number she hoped she'd never see.
18. Rings - Roxanne Ritchi is really, really bad at being a damsel.
19. Presentation - It was dark by the time they were done with the interview at the Metro City Library.
20. Layers Sleeping with the guy who used to kidnap you on a regular basis is a pretty special fucked up level of ethical and moral quandaries, Roxanne Ritchi realises.
On review I really like starting fics in media res or with a statement about a character. Starting mid action or with a clarifying sentence about
A lot of these lines are part of a bigger paragraph so not all the impact comes through with just the first sentence but for favourites I have to say 6. Please break me gently, just because you know immediately where he is, and that something has gone very wrong. Same with 11. No One calls you Honey Because they jump straight into action/aftermath of something we haven’t seen but can extrapolate on and things are going to get messy.
I will be continuing please break me gently at some point, I just have to get the next chapter together but I have a plan for that one...and maybe a little more of Honey too.
I’m curious if the first lines really grab people when they read them as that’s what my intention is but I don’t know if it works or people just stick with it until they know whats going on.
Tagging @nientedal @displacerghost @setepenre-set @copperbadge @coffeebuddha @muffinlance @thatfilthyanimal @mothgender @owlinabasket and anyone else who’s keen

Y’all want to know the real reason Kingdom Hearts as a story is so complicated and ridiculous?
Because we’re not given In Universe rules and then told a story within those rules. Instead! We get told this story out of order, and new rules are revealed constantly! Without full context, we can’t engage in a meaningful way about where the story is gonna go!
The story is fun, and I absolutely love kh, but we gotta be real, man. Use time travel, possession, reincarnation, data worlds, fictional worlds, sleeping worlds, true death, etc. all you want! But Please! Nomura! Tell us ahead of time for once in your life!!!!!
Anyways, I’m mad about Reincarnation how bout y’all

2018 fic in review
I was tagged by nnnnnnnnnobody, but i saw @ladyspock7 do it and I really wanted to so w/e! i’m doing it!
Total number of completed stories: DEFINE COMPLETED???? So much of my stuff is WiPs but... i’ll count completed fics in larger series I guess? So.... i think 8? 8, many of which are tiny tiny one-shots.
Total word count: according to Ao3, 22690
Fandoms written in: Megamind and, shockingly, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? I wanted to write more fic, but I think I expected to write less.
What’s your own favorite story of the year? Hmm... of the published stuff, it’s probably The G-Men Come To Call. I love that ‘verse, and I loved experimenting with the viewpoint character in that one.
Did you take any writing risks this year? Yeah, I mean, a year ago I never would have assumed that I would write any non-Megamind fic. Like, never. And specifically Zelda fic? that’s just not what I would have expected of myself. New fandom, new sort of fic.
Do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year? (Profit goals???) I want to finish more, obviously. I write a lot, I’ve got a bazillion wips in like four different scrivener docs, and I want to get more of them finished and out there and find out if they’re actually as good as they are in my head. Specifically I want to finish True Gold so that I can move on to the later parts of that ‘verse.
Best story of the year? Best as opposed to favorite... uh... I honestly think that the first chapter of Memory/Augury is some of my best. I think I really wrote some excellent description of how a panic attack feels- at least to me, I guess.
Most popular story of the year? Definitely the chapters of True Gold that went up this year. Folks really seem to like Diana! It’s humbling, actually. I love her too<3
Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Just.. the entire Calamitous Intent verse. Maybe I’m just spoiled because the Megamind fandom is so active and enthusiastic, but I haven’t gotten a single comment on any of the three fics in that verse and it kind of fucks me up. My brain can’t let it go. People left some kudos... but it’s like- did you actually like it? What did you think? What do you feel about the characters? Talk to me oh god.
Most fun story to write: G-Men. That came so easily to me. It flowed and it was just fun to play with the irony especially.
Story with the single sexiest moment: Uh. I didn’t write a lot of romantic stuff this year, at least not anything that got published, which I really didn’t realize until just this moment.
Sweetest story: Chapter 3 of True Gold. Diana bonding with Minion is just... *kissemoji*
“Holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you!”: Uhhhhhhhhhhhh I don’t write a lot of dark stuff as a general rule, so unless you count King Rhoam and Ganondorf slash as wrong (don’t worry it’s never getting published lmao) then I think I’m clear on this one
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters and most unintentionally telling story: Mmm... G-Men changed how I think about Victor a bit, though I always knew he would be more than he seemed in the first few True Gold fics, and I don’t know about the second one tbh.
Hardest story to write: The ones that aren’t published lmaoooooo
Biggest disappointment: I wanted to put out like, three more chapters of True Gold this year, and like four more WiPs that I’ve had sitting unfinished forever, and I’m disappointed I didn’t manage to put more out last year.
Biggest surprise: That I’m apparently allowed to just spit fic in whatever fandom I want and my brain won’t self-destruct lol
I forgot to tag people adsfadfasfaff if you want to do this too just do it, it's fun, I'm awful at tagging cause I feel like I'm pressuring folks so do it if you want or ignore me lol
