#''it strikes me that i know that girl'' <- lines that sit in your head forever and ever. narrative parallels of all time #thoughts #my art #les mis #javert #eponine #victor hugo said we've had nice parallels between a middle aged man and a young girl. now it's time for fucked up parallels #i had a whole collection of these w the two of them about parallels/cycles/javert perpetuating the same system that hurt him. but #they're barely sketches so i'll just post this on its own #there's a version of this with ghostly dogs things curled around them which was fun to do but felt a little too silly/reductive/unclear #so i took it out. altho i had a fun bit abt how their different collars represented their character #also not completely sure how i picture eponine but trying things out. i was really thinking abt how in her first appearance hugo emphasizes #that she is still a child even though she doesn't see herself that way & she's been forced to grow up quickly & was sort of trying to #reflect that. the odd area in mid teenage idk #still not Entirely happy with how i've structured/positioned it but it's been sitting on my computer for weeks so i may as well post it

While there's some things I enjoyed about the 1998 Les Mis Movie, I will NEVER forgive the ending. I'm sorry, but there is no world where Valjean would walk away smiling as Javert kills himself. Like, I'm not just saying this as a Valvert shipper - I truly think it's such a genuine disservice to Valjean's character to do that, considering that JVJ saves and forgives Javert MULTIPLE TIMES in canon. Valjean would not smile at anyone's death, especially not anyone's SUICIDE! Even if that person is Javert! He saved Javert's life, and you write him SMILING AS HE DIES? NO WAY!

Like, I've known about the religious aspect of Javert's death! Catholic theology taught that suicide was a mortal sin, meaning a sin that would send you to hell--Javert, who is described as exactingly religious (viewing religion as another authoritative structure, in contrast to Valjean's personal faith), was so distraught over the error and failure of his worldview, that he broke what he'd regarded as a sacred rule to punish himself and condemn himself to hell. I've known this! And it's agonizing!!

But then I read a YouTube comment of all things, and maybe this is an old take but it just eviscerated me:

At the time of Javert's death, suicide was a crime in France.

His last act was to break the law.

Mr. Hugo, I'd like to retire now, you're giving me too many emotions to process.

the funniest thing about bbc!Javert is that he recognizes Valjean as Madeleine with one glance, no doubt in his mind, but then when he commissions a wanted portrait, the drawing looks NOTHING like Valjean

#then he puts the portrait on his wall where it stays for ten years and he looks at it every day #being reminded of his one professional failure #kinda like that the man who lived rent free in his head was not Jean Valjean but someone he made up #post-seine fics for them would be so interesting alas #anyway i posted my toulon fic for them \o/#i should think about montreuil sequel but my brain is like unrelated post-seine fic now :D #javert #valvert #les miserables bbc
