Reading the Room at a 5th Grade Level: MC's Curse and Taiga's Memory Issues???

Hi. My name is Yuri and I am an idiot. You see, when I downloaded Tokyo Debunker and I saw what happened to the MC I was confused. "Why did everything go red?" I asked myself. "It's like we were in another dimension!" I unhelpfully said at some point probably. Well I finally googled the name of the station the MC said "was not her usual stop" and guess what? I should have done that way fucking sooner because it's related to a Japanese urban legend, much like Takeru in Episode 2. And helps me with what I noticed yesterday while I was re-reading the Hotarubi episode.

This post contains spoilers for Hotarubi's Episode, viewer discretion is advised.

When the MC is contacted by the spirit who allegedly curses her she is riding the train home from a concert. She receives a text message from someone with a spider lily profile picture, in English their user name is "Mina." Before we are confronted by Mina, the conductor announces that the train's next stop is Kisaragi Station, a station that dear reader, does not exist. It's also extremely famous! But I am not smart or up to date on horror things so I didn't know (⁄ ⁄•⁄-⁄•⁄ ⁄) so sorry if this is all stuff you guys already knew.

Kisaragi Station

The original post about Kisaragi station was, as best I can tell, made on a site called 2chan, which is a Japanese anonymous forum. I was able to find a post about it on r/nosleep from 2019 which claims that people started posting about it on reddit in 2010, and another post on Quora translating a thread that was posted to twitter. There are a few common themes to the urban legend, but there are three I find particularly relevant to our situation.

The station is believed to be on the border of our world and the "other world." It is possible to leave the station, we will get into how in a moment, but attempting to leave it by following the train tracks will get you killed. Especially if you attempt to cross through the train tunnel, that will take you across the point of no return. The original post describes hearing the sound of drums and bells, similar to a Japanese festival, that get louder the closer you get to the tunnel. Accepting rides from people in the vicinity of the station will also kill you. Cell service is active in the area, but you aren't able to find location information and people will not be able to find you. The anomaly on the train we see isn't tied to Kisaragi Station as far as I can tell, and I have been combing through various yokai to see if I can find anything like it but so far I haven't had much luck.

Back to how to leave the station, you have to light something on fire. Specifically something that causes smoke. Paper seems to be the most common suggestion. It's a small detail, but since the game starts with us seeing the school on fire I thought it was an interesting thing to note.

I added Taiga into the title of the post as in the translated twitter thread, the concept of memory loss the longer you stay in Kisaragi is brought up. We never actually see Taiga leave the station, and the MC only leaves it because Haku does something with his artifact. In Episode 5 Haku says he was not using his stigma to put the children's spirits to rest, implying that spiritual energy adn stigmas are different powers he can use. I am going to propose something kind of crazy at the end of this entire post about Haku, but for now just dealing with the facts presented in game he specifically says he "cordoned off" the area. Does he mean that he took the train to Kisaragi station? Or was MC always going there? And if he was the one responsible for doing that then uh. How did Taiga leave the station and get back to Darkwick? Was he trapped there and did he wander around for a long time, doing permanent damage to his memory in the process? Or am I over thinking this and he lost track of the anomaly and lit something on fire so he could leave. I like the idea of him lighting the station on fire and the ghosts asking him to leave, but that's probably not what happened lol

Red

When the train reaches Kisaragi Station in game, the color pallet swaps to red. Much like it does in Episode 5 when MC receives a certain visitor:

We learn later on that this is Zenji, and that Zenji is dead. MC seems to be reacting to his presence and I would like to think that the color choice is deliberate. If we go back to Episode 2, Takeru only has light amounts of red shading around him in his comic panels, when he kills the streamer and when Alan beats the shit out of him are two that immediately come to mind. Interacting with him does not turn the world red like interacting with Zenji or Kisaragi Station does, further strengthening Leo's conclusion about him being a Talupa and not a ghost as this red tint seems to be used for when MC is interacting with the spirit world. Which I am once again asking, how did Taiga get home from Kisaragi Station? Did he carjack a Taxi ghost?

This raises some questions about the anomaly that cursed MC. Is it a ghost and is it something unique to Japan? And if neither of those things are true then why was Haku there? I can think of two reasons for him to be there: the first is if he is there to keep an eye on Taiga for Cornelius/the Institute because Sinostra is on probation but they need him (he was specifically assigned this mission because of how aggressive he is) or it was meant to be a Hotarubi mission because it fit their criteria but Haku couldn't handle it so they arranged for Taiga to come along with him. That last thing is sort of countered by Haku saying that he doesn't think Hotarubi would be able to help with the MC's curse, but he could be lying about that I suppose.

Anyway who wants to hear my really stupid out there reason for why Haku is there-

So hear me out, what if Haku's stigma is time travel. So in this post on the subreddit donsaadali suggested that the powers you pick from in the personality test are powers the ring could give MC. I had the thought before that maybe it was a list of stigmas that the various characters had completely forgetting about the time travel line. But it does sort of fit with my line of thinking: make people follow my orders? That's Jin. Elemental powers? Towa. The others: extreme luck, never having to sleep, shapeshifting, and gravity control aren't ones that we have concrete information about but I am tempted to say that "extreme luck" could be Taiga, as turning things into ammo struck me as a quality of his artifact and not his stigma but I'm not really convinced of that. Anyway, if Haku can time travel, he could go back in time, pick up MC, and bring her back to Darkwick even if that's not what happened in the first place and Taiga was the one who brought her back the first time! But why he would do that is lost on me. Well not completely lost, I do think he wants to "help" her but with what and why is not something I have a theory on just yet.

To be clear, that was just me spitballing. I do not really think that Haku's stigma is time travel, there isn't enough evidence for me to think that. I do think that if there is a timeloop going on he is probably aware of it, but again. I don't know why.

A depressed and introverted college student. One day, while working at her shift at a chocolate store, none other than Neru shows up and starts making small talk with her, only for her heshin engine to "sync" with Neru's cell phone, enabling them the ability to transform. A spoiled and charismatic rich girl, she is the heir to the largest robotics manufacturer in Japan. It was over. F. F. Growling, noted transphobic author of children's books and completely separate person from any real life public figures, was dead. Londinium, as war-torn as it was, breathed easy for the first time in years. Yam the Nokia felt her whip fall from her slackened grip and blinked, clearing her eyes as the dust settled slowly around her.

"It worked," said Saint, the event's five star welfare push stroker. She lowered her shaking hands from the control panel. "My transgenderism forcefem beam... it worked."

But there were more important things to worry about. There always were. Even the most ordinary trip to the dentist could bring calamity. Yam stood, her ears ringing, and looked from side to side.

Where was Luna?

Her fellow Operator had been with her through thick and thin, through sickness and health. She'd supported a fledgling Yam through her first tentative steps into the wide world that was her identity, and also stuck her fingers in her mouth in a sexy way unrelated to the dentist visit. But they had lost each other in the heat of combat, and worry seized Yam's heart that they would never be able to see each other again.

She struggled within the jaws of life - so fitting, that she be taken in the mouth of another like she had allowed Luna to stick her fingers in her mouth - and pried herself free, ignoring the calls of the fire department.

maybe in a normal situation you wouldn’t be glad to have to work on so many pages. but now, that haewon was so focused on filling out the forms, you could stare at her in peace, without worrying a ball would hit you again.

one might wonder does the lighting strike the same place twice, but you just proved that the ball can in fact hit the same person twice.

twice can you also be led to the nurse’s office by the same person. so many coincidences in your life, maybe you should start listening to twice?

the central idea of yuri briar is that he's here just for comedic relief, and obviously, he's such a siscon and this and that, right?

and i don't blame people for thinking that in their minds, because of the way the animators and some of the writing board seem to set him up...

even endo, had said that, he just wanted yuri to be a sweet little brother people would adore, but the writers made him like this, and well, you know.

anyway, even with this personality, his character's backstory provides a lot of justification to his behavior,, like sure, at first he might seem like the comedic relief type of character, who's inappropriately in love with his sister, but actually, it's not like that at all...

in the anime, they've sort of butchered his character more,, from the changing of the lily bouquet for his sister to the rose one, and then obviously the little translation mistakes here and there.

now, let's just get to the point.

in the scene where yuri calls yor and talks about the party, he asks her if she wants him to introduce her to someone, and tbh he seems very genuine with it.

in the scene where he's meeting loid for the first time, he tells yor he can't just accept this marriage. which is so fair, because imagine your literal blood, someone you grew up with, the only person you've really ever known, gets married, and then doesn't tell you for an entire year. like, that's gotta make you upset and question things right?

i do agree, that his attachment and his admiration and obsession towards his sister is unhealthy, but hey, at least give him a second. understand his perspective right? he was just a boy, who lost both his parents to a war and grew up with his sister being the only one who went above and beyond to get him basic essentials.

and, obviously, you'd love your sibling if you were in this situation right?

so it's just that he's not really yet grasped how to normally love yor,, now this doesn't really mean that he loves her abnormally lol.

im sure that the writers will continue to develop his character as the manga continues. he's already developed a lot, and while the overly obsessed brother trope is quite funny and well-used, especially in this manga,, i still believe he has more of a personality then they show us.

and the only thing annoying is that people seem to judge him and then make posts about how he's just so creepy and weird,, which proves that they've obviously not paid enough attention to his character details to understand the reasons behind it yknow?

otome no teikoku: ok so. heres the thing. if you decide to pick this up the first, idk, dozen chapters will be Bad. there's a lot of male-gazey uncomfortable stuff at the beginning, and while it doesnt take too long for it to stop feeling so offputting and start being surprisingly wholesome and earnest instead, it never stops being horny, so read it if youre in the mood for that.

as for what it's actually about... well there's this all girls school, right? and it has girls in it. and they are all gay and dating each other. its basically just a collection of short chapters about different couples within this school, and it has some of my favorite dynamics and moments in yuri. i reread it very often (and there's almost 300 chapters of this thing out, so that's a feat) and it never stops being enjoyable. stan nononon/yumimi

a monster wants to eat me: about hinako, who lost her whole family to the sea in a tragic accident and now yearns to join them in the afterlife, and shiori, a mermaid claiming she's here to eat her. the problem is, hinako being actively suicidal and depressed means her flesh won't exactly be very tasty, and shiori is a bit of a gourmet, meaning her goal is to first help her recover and regain her joie de vivre, and only then will she eat her. i highly recommend this

out of the blue!: transfer honor student x delinquent yuri. it's very short so i dont wanna yap about it too much, but it's a big big personal fave. it's only 4 chapters so check it out

sougou tovarisch: honestly anything by arata iri never fails to get at least one laugh out of me, but this one especially. if you know a kiss and a white lily by canno (and if you don't, go check it out), the premise to this one is a bit similar to the dynamic between ayaka and yurine, with hardworking MC obsessed with being number one and chill love interest who beats her without even meaning to.

the focus here is less on romance and more on comedy, and i love it. kanna is amazing. she wins a chess match by punching her opponent so hard she passes out. its only 13 chapters + assorted extras, very fun easy read

liar satsuki can see death: satsuki can see dead people. specifically, she can see the future corpses of people up to 24 hours before they actually die. she always zealously warns the future victims of the imminent danger, and she has been branded a weirdo and a liar for it as no one has ever actually died before. in truth, she is actually literally incapable of lying, and the only reason everyone survived so far is that she will go to frankly insane lengths to save them. she's a great protagonist and her autistic swag has captivated me and many others

mieruko-chan: miko can see... Things. that no one else can. but she has to pretend she cant, especially to the Things themselves. she doesnt know exactly what will happen if they realize she can see them, but she's certainly not about to find out.

Jujutsu Kaisen Hanakotoba Analysis

-> Black Lily

The flowers pictured in this scene are black lilies (Lilium) which are known as kuro yuri (黒百合) in Japanese. Its hanakotoba meanings are “love” and “curse”. In Western floriography, they symbolise rebirth, transformation and the appeal of the unknown. In the scene pictured above Tsumiki Fushiguro is seen surrounded by myriads of black lilies which is fitting considering she was cursed and fell into a coma. Cursed love is a significant theme in Jujutsu Kaisen, particularly in the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen: 0. In the film, Gojo says, "Love is the most twisted curse of all." This perfectly encapsulates the symbolic meaning of the black lily.

-> Black Petunia

While the flower pictured in Jujutsu Kaisen’s second opening, Vivid Vice, is often thought to be a black lily; it more closely resembles a black petunia. Petunias are known as pechunia (ペチュニア) in Japanese and hold the hanakotoba meanings of “peace of the heart” and “with you, the heart will be soft”. In Western floriography, petunias mean “your presence soothes me”. Darkness, mourning, and resentment are associated with black petunias. However, black petunias also have the enigmatic connotations of strength, mystery, and uniqueness. In the opening, a black flower, presumably a petunia opens up while a juvenile Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) swims around it. This fish is thought to represent Junpei Yoshino while the flower is thought to represent Yuji Itadori. Additionally, throughout this Jujutsu Kaisen’s opening sequences water has been shown to represent danger and destruction. Thereby making this scene a depiction of how Yuji’s strength has blossomed because of having undergone serious loss and being nurtured by danger and destruction. Both Yuji’s background as well as the origin and full extent of his unique abilities remain shrouded in mystery. This ties in with black petunias symbolizing strength, mystery and uniqueness.  In addition to this Yuji’s kindness, upbeat and easy-going personality bring a sense of reassurance to those that know him well. The other connotations of the petunia, which include "your presence soothes me," "the heart will be soft with you," and "the peace of the heart," are all related to these attributes.

In Japan, red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) are known as higanbana (彼岸花) which means autumn equinox flower. They represent sad memories, resignation, independence, lost memory, abandonment, passion and those who are never to meet again in Japanese hanakotoba. The red spider lily is also associated with death, goodbyes, rebirth and the far shore (land of the dead). The red spider lily's symbolic meaning of farewells and rebirth is embodied in classic Japanese artworks depicting mythological situations, where they are referred to as the "flowers of heaven.“ In Japan, there is a strong correlation between the Buddhist and Shinto religions and red spider lilies. These striking flowers are thought to represent rebirth and the transience of life. They are also believed to guide the deceased's spirits transition to the afterlife. They are frequently observed blossoming next to cemeteries or other holy locations. They are also thought to have protective properties that shield against negative energy and evil spirits. Red spider lilies are also thought to symbolise the boundary between life and death in Japanese culture. This is because its flowers bloom during autumnal equinox when Japanese Buddhists believe that deceased people's spirits return to the near shore (the world of the living). Some legends claim that when an individual crosses paths with someone they will never see again, red spider lilies blossom alongside their path. These legends are partly responsible for the flower's affinity with final goodbyes, in addition to its association with death and the hereafter. This flower is also regarded as a symbol of both death and rebirth and are described as the flowers that grow in hell in the Lotus Sutra. As a result of this, certain Buddhist traditions in China and Japan believe that these flowers aid spirits in crossing from the afterlife into reincarnation. The flower's sad symbolism for loss and parting is based on an ancient Chinese legend about two elves, Saka and Manju, who were the guardians of leaves and flowers, respectively. They could never meet, however, because the red spider lily never sprouts flowers and leaves at the same time. They both yearned to meet one another, and they violated the gods in order to do so. The gods punished them harshly for this and separated them for eternity. The flower is still associated with loss, both of loved ones and of memories. Despite their frequent association with death and parting, red spider lilies are also admired for their beauty and resilience. They can survive in a range of challenging environments, including rocky and riverside locations, and their vivid red hue helps them stand out against the surrounding scenery. As a result of this, these flowers can also be seen as a symbol of strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. The red spider lily also represents beauty because of its vivid, vibrant red blossoms, which give a sense of elegance. Red spider lilies are pictured in Jujutsu Kaisen’s 3rd ending theme as well as the opening credits for its mobile game, Phantom Parade. In ED3, the flowers could be a harbinger of how various characters in this arc will meet their impending deaths, separating them from everyone else. The final panel of this ending depicts Gojo and Geto walking beneath a bridge. The underbridge in the real-life location on which this scene was based is only a single-path bridge, however here the bridge splits into two opposite directions. This is similar to legends that state that when a person meets paths with someone they will never see again, crimson spider lilies bloom across their path. This alludes to how Gojo and Geto will part ways at the end of the Hidden Inventory Arc and will never walk alongside each other again. In the Phantom Parade OP, myriads of spider lilies are pictured under an ominous sky surrounding Mahito and Pseudo-Geto. The use of these flowers here foreshadows their connection with the far shore, their association with human souls and bodies, and their nefarious schemes involving carnage and death.

The cherry blossom (Prunus) is known as the Japanese cherry and is the unofficial national flower of Japan. Its Japanese name Sakura (桜) has been derived from the word “saku” which means “to bloom”.  Its hanakotoba meanings are “beauty of spirit”, grace, chastity, excellent beauty, gentleness, good education and the “transience of life”. In Japan, cherry blossoms are also a symbol of the “beauty of impermanence”—a Shinto concept better known as “mono no aware” (物の哀れ) as their falling petals are a reminder that although life is short, it is beautiful and should be savoured. The Japanese concept of “natsukashii” (懐かしい) likewise emphasizes the fleeting nature of cherry blossoms. This concept refers to the happy-yet-wistful nostalgia for times and things that we will never be able to go back to. We will never get to experience those moments again, just like the ephemeral cherry blossoms, which makes them even more significant. Cherry blossoms bloom from March to April which is the start of the new fiscal year in Japan. As a result of this cherry blossoms have also come to symbolise new beginnings and springtime. Given that feudal Japanese soldiers associated cherry blossoms with honour, discipline, and dignity—falling flowers were thought to be symbolic of a Samurai's death. In Western floriography, cherry blossoms herald the changing of the seasons and symbolise renewal and rebirth. They also symbolise the fleeting nature of life, tenderness, forgiveness, strength, beauty, love, confidence, peace, friendship and gratitude. The Cherry Blossom's association with "happy-yet-wistful nostalgia for times and things that we will never be able to go back to" is reminiscent of both Gojo's and Yuji's carefree high school days before the Hidden Inventory Arc and Shibuya Incident respectively. The transiency of life is a central motif in Jujutsu Kaisen, as being a Jujutsu sorcerer means facing the threat of death around every turn. "No matter how many allies you have around you; when you die, you'll be alone". This line said by Gojo reinforces that one's time in life is finite and that nothing can stop death. Even if you have your loved ones with you at the time of death, they will not accompany you on your journey to the hereafter. 

-> Ginkgo

In Japan, ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba) are called ginkyo (銀杏) and symbolise magnificence, longevity, requiem, strength, hope and peace in hanakotoba. In Western floriography, ginkgo trees symbolise solemnity, longevity and requiem. The beauty and symbolism of the ginkgo tree are valued by many European cultures, who associate it with power, resilience, human progress, enlightenment, and memory enhancement. The ginkgo tree also represents renewal as shows off a magnificent colour display each autumn as it sheds its leaves to sprout new ones. In other Asian cultures, ginkgo trees are highly symbolic of longevity, endurance, resiliency, and hope. The ginkgo's symbolic meaning is said to be derived from the tree’s ability to survive under the harshest conditions as well as its long lifespan. When displayed as a single tree, it stands for strength and solitude. Many of Jujutsu Kaisen's characters embody the Ginkgo's symbolic qualities of strength, power, resilience, renewal, and solemnity. Meanwhile, the tree's symbolic meanings of hope and longevity are contradicted by its brutal motifs and numerous tragic deaths.

Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) are known as Ajisai (紫陽花) in Japan. Its meanings in traditional hanakotoba are pride, patience, coldness, heartlessness and temperament. Conversely, the flower is also connected with empathy and apology. In Japanese culture, the blossom has both positive and negative connotations, representing both deep or heartfelt emotion in addition to a fickle or changeable heart. In Western floriography, hydrangeas have both negative meanings—such as heartlessness, boastfulness, and coldness—as well as positive meanings—such as sincerity, honesty, gratitude, heartfelt emotions and deep understanding. Butterfly's Poison; Blood Chains (Chou no Doku) Part 1 - Junichi Shiba Route

Yuriko seems like a really fun heroine, love how ready she was to jump onto a tree from her balcony to escape her birthday party. It seems that Yuriko is quite taken by Majima though! Mizuhito is an LI isn't he? Dang, we've got an incest route? Never really experienced that in an otome game before so that will be interesting, I mean I'm sure it turns other people off but I think it's quite interesting in fiction🫣 Oh, it's really sad to know that because Mizuhito was forced to give up on his dreams of being a painter and going abroad for it, he's lost his ambition and just sleeps around with nothing he's particularly interested in anymore. It's terrible when you actually have a dream but can't go for it. Oooh okay, Mizuhito is the son of a servant and Yasuyuki, Yuriko's father, no wonder Shigeko, Yuriko's mother doesn't seem to like him at all. The maid that likes Majima is crazy, what makes her think she'll be more desirable to him if she tells him that she's been sleeping with Saburo?? And Saburo looks very creepy so that's even worse! Fujita is an older man! I like them older so I'll be very interested in his route! I'm actually surprised that Yuriko hasn't caught on that this birthday party is most likely a party hosted to "marry" her off to a rich family. Fujita giving Yuriko chocolate to cheer her up was cute. Hmm Hideo is the childhood friend huh~ It doesn't seem like they have a nice relationship anymore because he's apparently changed though?🤔 Wow, Hideo seems like a jerk that's taking out his anger towards Yuriko's parents looking down on his family on Yuriko.

I'm actually really sad that Majima is basically her first love and the one she likes but she's going to be with someone else. How do I do these routes knowing she likes Majima but feels like she can't be with him because he's just a gardener? Although I guess it's realistic... Kyoko is so beautiful! Hmm, Yuriko smells strongly of the flower in her name - Yuri aka lily, I wonder what that means. I'm glad Hideo apologised because he really was quite hurtful. Wow, Yuriko really was so reckless, she's really lucky that this guy saved her. Anyway, that was a terrible end to her birthday party. Not only did people end up ambushing it with weapons trying to kill those related to politics, but Yuriko's father got killed and her mother seems to know who the killer might be but is so frightened that she's going nuts.  I don't know what's going to happen to Yuriko's family now though. Her mother continues her lavish spending to seemingly get away from everything, her brother is the new head of the household but has no heart to do anything for it. The guy who saved her is Shiba, our first route! Not sure what to think of him though lol.

Well, I didn't think Shiba would be so interested in Yuriko, but I guess he's the rich businessman LI who saves her family, not sure how I feel about him describing how much he wants to touch her, veryyyy inappropriate. Totally understand why Yuriko is so put off by him. I can't even blame Mizuhito for hating this house considering he never got to do what he really wanted to do and their house is still wasting away because of his parents. It made me happy to see him so adamantly against marrying Yuriko off to Shiba for money and ruining her life. Even though I can understand why Shiba hates on the nobility, he really has no manners or common sense tbh lol! He really wanted to drag Yuriko out by herself without anyone else?? Never, I tell you!! That's like releasing a little lamb to a wolf lol. I'm sure he won't do anything but she hasn't even accepted his marriage proposal yet so it's definitely not fine for her to be out with a guy by herself. Too bad that choosing Shiba as my first route means we pick no one to accompany Yuriko which is wild lol, I demand Majima😭

Anyway, it seems like Hideo has also caught on to Mizuhito's supposed "feelings" towards Yuriko... Does Shiba know Yuriko from somewhere? Anyway, even though Shiba is frustrating to deal with, I do like how Yuriko so straightforwardly shows her dislike and disgust towards him, she really doesn't mince her words haha. Well, those kisses were wild! He really went for it and wouldn't take no for an answer! I mean, it's great that he's honest but whoa lol. Kyoko is very amusing, gotta love how honest she is about not recommending having children lmao, poor kid though, he can probably tell his mother never wanted him and was forced to have him. Good that Shiba apologised but he's very shameless to say he's sorry but that he doesn't regret it lol. I am so glad that Kyoko told Shiba that women are not weak and are not possessions of men because dude, this guy really hasn't given much respect to Yuriko and women much at all! But they did it playfully so I guess Shiba isn't thaaaat much of a jerk but he still can be lol. Shiba's rough around the edges and lacks understanding of social cues around nobility I guess but it did kinda hurt to see him so distraught over Yuriko not wanting to accept his pearl necklace. It was obvious that it was going to break but I'm kinda glad Yuriko at least got to tell him that she felt like she was getting bought by him rather than loved by him with all these gifts and stuff he's doing.

Hmm I'm not sure and I'll feel bad if I'm wrong but it feels like Majima is related to why people broke in on the day of the party and this possibly revenge plot against Yuriko's parents? Personally, I don't really feel the romance between Shiba and Yuriko but I guess I can understand how Yuriko would feel silly for believing he loves her when he kissed Kyoko, and then he pushes her down now too! Glad he stopped because I was very worried for Yuriko. Shiba was probably mad to see Yuriko at a marriage interview and that's why he said what he said but that was very disrespectful to Yuriko for sure. And honestly I don't really blame Yuriko for doing what she did, because it is difficult for her to believe in his feelings for her. I'm glad though that Yuriko understands that accepting this marriage interview in anger was disrespectful to Katsuie and his family who are serious about looking for a partner. It's nice to know that even though Shiba's confident, he was still anxious about Yuriko getting married to this guy, enough that he's been lacking sleep anyway. Now that they're both a little bit more open with what they want to say to each other without Yuriko displaying outright disgust and Shiba being a bit more honest about his feelings without other pretenses and jokes, I do like how they interact with each other. Communication really is the best.

I really loved how he finally told Yuriko about their real first meeting being when he was trying to survive as a teenager committing crime, but meeting the young Yuriko who helped him made him want to live up to her standards and be suitable to be beside her. It's crazy to think that she was basically his whole reason for living all these years and that's the depth of his love for her and that's why he finds it difficult to hold himself back lol. Their honest conversation really made me see him in a better light for sure. Definitely didn't expect them to be wild enough to do it in her bedroom just because Mizuhito wasn't home though haha. I loved how they went back to where they first met. Even though it obviously affects Shiba more, being able to come back with the one he's been chasing after all his life, but I liked how instead of forcing Yuriko to think about their first meeting that she barely remembered, she instead reminisced about the peaceful days when her family was wealthy. As for Majima possibly being the head of an opium trafficking organisation? That is pretty scary😮 Majima must hate her family quite a bit if he wants Yuriko to suffer so much, although it feels like he does like her and that's why he wanted to bring her to Shanghai and torment her next to him. I wonder if Mizuhito not being able to fulfil his painter dreams was partly because of him doing something?

Anyway, Yuriko really is reckless but seeing Shiba with tears in his eyes when she woke up after jumping out of Majima's car and throwing herself into the ocean to escape was really sweet. After their feelings became mutual, it's been really nice to see how genuine Shiba is and how much he sincerely cares for and loves her to not even hesitate jumping into the ocean to save her at night. Shiba being the director of an orphanage and hoping to build a school for children like him is something I expected him to do, he's just that kind of guy. Now that we have a bit more context as to why he said you could buy anything with money, yeah he's right in that context of having more opportunities and choices in the future etc haha. He really was insufferable when he first said it though haha! Dang, didn't expect how bad the ending could be with Yuriko accepting Iida's proposal and how it causes such tragedy… Not only did Iida's business basically go down, Mitsuhito "suicided" and if Yuriko tries to follow him, Shiba saves her and she loses her eyesight, what hell…lt honestly sucks because she's basically trapped and can only "see" Shiba but all he does is touch her thinking that's the only way he can have her. The ending where Yuriko seeks revenge on Shiba is so sad but I really liked it. It felt so terrible to see how happy Shiba was going home to her knowing that she was poisoning him everyday but it didn't matter to him as long as he got to live happily with her. He wasn't even the one who drove Iida's business down and made her family's debts worse, he just became the most likely suspect and never denied it making Yuriko misunderstand, that's just so sad. Reading his diary expressing his neverending love for her was so sweet, yet so tragic. The Shanghai Doll ending is amusing, I guess going blind and deaf is the only way for Majima to feel like he can be with her without feeling guilty?

Overall, Shiba's route was all right. The first half really wasn't the best because Shiba really wasn't communicating properly and was to an extent insufferable with the way he said things and how he treated her by always touching her inappropriately without her consent. I mean, I understand how desperate and happy he was since he finally reached her "level" and was able to see her and interact with her but he really didn't have the best impression haha. I mean, I still enjoyed how snappy she was towards him and enjoyed their interactions to an extent but it was still too much for me. However, once their feelings were mutual, I really enjoyed the rest of the story! I liked how Shiba finally could be a bit more honest and express himself in a way that made you understand better why he said things the way he did before, and seeing how kind he was made you understand how deep his love was for Yuriko. I enjoyed how cute they were, and it felt good to see how genuine Shiba's feelings were for her in contrast to how playful he was in the beginning, and how it felt like we could never really see what his purpose was even though he did seem to like Yuriko. I really liked the poison ending and feel like that might be my favourite just because I love the regret and pain, but also the different way the ending was able to portray Shiba's love for Yuriko. Tragic but sweet, my favourite thing to read haha!

idk if anyone's curious but hayate's my fav so i did some digging on some stuff in her navigation card

the purple flowers are (probably) asters. western interpretations it symbolises love, wisdom, patience, faith, elegance, and beauty, and in japanese “i will not forget you” and commonly used for memorials and honouring the dead (im assuming this possibly references kokoa’s mother passing away maybe?)

the white flowers are lilies and have pretty much the same symbolism in the west and japan: purity, love, chastity etc. but we can probably take a more literal interpretation of this: lily in japanese is yuri, aka girls love and if theres something about hayate is that she loves a girl :]

theres the pen, ink and paper, for how she writes lyrics and poetry. the fountain pen is also her extra training item in game.

the crane game she's sat on top of contains plushies of the other unichord members as well as michiru’s bear

there's also the punching bag game behind her in which she has the all the top scores for

and i dont know how relevant this is but on the sides of the car you can see that it's just a city, and the arcade is completely behind the crane game, possibly symbolising how she tends to not worry about what others think of her and gets lost in her own world, (like how in side nova 2 i think kokoa was conscious of hayate standing too close to her while hayate didnt see the issue or in her 4* card story where she wants to kiss at school whilst kokoa wants to wait till they're at home).

First, let's talk about the bouquet of azalea, red calla lily, thistle and amaranthus (love-lies-bleeding)

Meaning and why these flowers were chosen: Firstly, azalea, because it’s famously toxic and thus has been used as a death threat [...]. This fits my guy because he’s killed a vast number of people, and because his appearance and presence are generally threatening. But [...] it also symbolizes temperance, abundance, fragile or held-back passion, and prudence, which better suits his actual personality, as he’s a careful, reserved, thoughtful person with an abundance of intelligence; with the symbolism about passion, the only person he’s loved romantically he didn’t ultimately pursue or have a chance with, and even familial love for him tends to be an understated thing. Calla lily, because it symbolizes death and so does he, and because it also symbolizes rebirth and, from the right perspective, he’s certainly been reborn a couple times. I’d specifically go with red calla lilies, since those also symbolize determination and he is nothing if not devoted to his goals when it counts. Thistle, because it symbolizes pain, which he has both endured a lot of and dealt out a lot of; aggression, which for a while overtook him; and protection from evil, which he always does his best to provide.
