megan loved being an idol, it was something she worked her ass of to achieve. still, the job came with a lot of ups and downs. despite having six loving bandmates, she sometimes felt like it was all too much.

too loud, too messy. even though megan was really the loud one in katseye.

she needed someone to ground her when the world felt like it was spinning too fast, just like now. after a rough day of practice, she came back to the dorm and threw herself into her room before any of the girls could say anything.

because of the uneven number of people in the group, the rooming situation was a little funny—they decided on manon and daniela, sophia and yoonchae and then megan, lara and you. the three of you were close in age, so it was working out pretty well.

but now, all the girls looked between themselves silently. it wasn’t weird for megan to have worse days—everyone has those once in a while—but she’s been like this too often lately.

“… who wants to check up on her?” sophia asked finally after they let the silence linger for a couple seconds. “i could do it, but i don’t want her to worry or anything, and she might if it’s the leader talking-“

“i could do it,” all heads turned to you. you awkwardly nodded to yourself before pointing at the door where megan disappeared. “it’s my room too, you know. worst case scenario i just lay down too and pretend i didn’t want to ask anything.”

“i’ll crash with dani and manon then.” the two mentioned girls nodded approvingly. “we’ll do a live or something. i wanna talk with the fans a bit.“

“perfect!” sophia clapped her hands. “and i’ll take a shower. i’m a bit tired…”

with that, sophia and yoonchae headed to their room and manon and daniela went to theirs with lara. you went to your bag, grabbing the book you were currently reading. if megan didn’t wanna talk, you could at least lay in your bed and read a bit.

walking to your room, you debated knocking but ultimately decided against it. that would only make it obvious that you were worried, which you of course were, but megan didn’t have to know. if she felt your worry, she might just shut down and not talk about her feelings in fear of burdening someone else.

the chinese girl didn’t even flinch as you opened the door, clearly too deep in thought. she laid on her back, one arm covering her eyes from the light in the room.

you sat on your bed, silently observing her for a couple seconds.

“… have you ever played the witcher?”

“huh?” clearly taken aback, your roommate slowly turned to lay on her side, her arm falling off her face. “what?”

“the game,” you clarified. “you play a lot of games so i kind of assumed you might’ve played it.”

“i don’t think i have… why?”

you stood up from the bed and walked to her side of the room, book in hand. “i’m actually starting to read the first book. the games were based on this series... it’s a series of short stories, wanna read it with me?”

before she could protest in any way, you sat down by the leg of her bed and opened the book so that she could also see the words, even if she didn’t want to read them. megan didn’t have to know you were actually almost finished with the story.

“i meant that i could read it to you, you know? i wanna practice my english a bit because i think my pronunciation has been off lately…”

megan’s heart fluttered a bit. you didn’t mention how she was dyslexic. she could technically read, but it wasn’t exactly pleasurable. and here you were offering to read to her?

“uhm, sure,” she felt her cheeks heat up slightly. “if it helps you with your pronunciation…”

“perfect! let me know if i’m saying something funny.”

megan slept well that night you read to her. your voice was oddly calming and even though she slept through half of the chapter, she appreciated it.

the next day after rehearsals, she was a little surprised when upon entering your shared room, you immediately made a beeline to her bed and sat by the leg of it again.

“you-“ she glanced down at your surprised. “you wanna read to me again?”

lara looked up from her phone suspiciously, but didn’t say a word.

“yeah, i mean, i’m really into the story, and it’s helping my diction too.” you opened the book, but hesitated a little before reading. “do you.. want to read a couple lines yourself?”

“huh?” megan was so taken aback she froze. then, after a couple seconds, she looked at you bewildered. “y/n, you know i’m dyslexic, right? i’m like a super slow reader.”

“cool,” you shrugged. “this page is mostly dialogue so it’s short paragraphs.”

“oh,” she wasn’t expecting that, not at all. you didn’t look bothered by the fact that she was a bit slow when reading. “s-sure, i guess?”

megan leaned down a little so that her head was by your shoulder and she could see the letters better. you let her read half a page. instead of following the words though, your eyes were glued to her subtly. she looked cute like this, eyebrows furrowed in thought as she read slowly.

when she was done, she turned to look at you, small smile on her lips before she noticed your staring and blushed subtly.

“words are hard for me too sometimes…” you pointed to the page, your finger hovering over one of the words. “like, what even is a ‘striga’?”

lara snorted on her bed. a small smile tugged on megan’s lips. the moment felt nice, comforting. she hoped you’d do that more often.

“… can you read more?” she asked, laying back comfortably on the bed, one hand now tracing mindless patters on your shoulder.

“sure,” you bit back a grin and continued with the page, letting a comfortable rhythm settle between you.

to your surprise, the next evening before you even came into your room, megan was already by your side. she fidgeted nervously, eyes glued to the floor before falling on your book.

“could we… do that regularly?” were her exact words. she wanted you to read her the book every night—didn’t matter if the day was rough because of practice or if she was buzzing with energy after a good concert.

megan just craved the little moments. and of course you couldn’t know that, but there was a fluttering chest every time you settled on the floor by her bed and opened your book. after the third or fourth session, she arranged a bean bag for you to sit on.

‘so you don’t get sore.’

so, you continued the small tradition—every night when all the members came back to the dorm and everyone was heading to bed, you’d bring your book to megan and sit by her bed, slowly working with her through the first books of the witcher. the first tome, last wish, was done pretty soon, as it was just a collection of short stories.

but those were megan’s favourite, because she sometimes could read the shorter stories to you.

the members of course noticed the change. megan stopped being gloomy after practice, instead she was all smiles and giggles before disappearing into the room she shared with you and lara. the indian girl often went with you two, listening to the book with one ear and texting the group chat she had with the other members (‘katseye minus the loverbirds’). she was the main source of information for them.

by the third book you read with megan, everyone in the dorm thought you were dating. the chinese girl was practically glued to your side whenever you came back home, listening to you read at night and rambling your ear off about the game adaptations during the mornings.

except, as lara learned, you two weren’t actually a thing.

much to megan’s dismay, you were a bit obvious to her clinginess. seeing one of her bestfriends suffer a tiny, not-realy-one-sided crush, lara decided to take matters into her hand. she wouldn’t have megan moping over her personal audiobook just because she didn’t have the balls to ask you out.

“i’m so tired,” the indian groaned, hands flying to cover her face. you and megan were in your room again, presumably doing your nightly reading. “you guys don’t see the shit i do. megan is practically drooling.”

“ouch. that bad?” manon patted lara on the back comfortingly. they were meeting in the living room yet again to discuss, as lara called it, the ‘love struck bookworms’ matter.

“yes,” she affirmed. “that bad. i swear anyone else would melt with the way she’s looking at y/n, but the dumbass doesn’t even notice?”

“woah, no dumbassing my members.” the indian playfully glared at sophia.

“stop fighting, this is a serious matter,” daniela sat up, clearly a little invested now. on her side, yoonchae was mindlessly playing with her phone, but still listening with one ear. “what is megan exactly doing?”

“giving her those stupid heart eyes. and like—anyone normal would notice that, but y/n is so obvious it hurts!”

“just tell y/n-“ manon was cut off by the group’s leader.

“no, no. we’re not doing that. we can’t go ‘oh, y/n, megan likes you’. that like, kills the vibe for both of them.”

“true,” a bit bummed out about her idea, manon slowly nodded. “then, we make megan flirt…?”

“have you seen her flirt?” lara was groaning as if she went through hell. which, honestly, she did with megan’s flirting skills. or lack of thereof. “the last time she had a crush on this cute coffee shop worker, she tried giving him a pickup line, spilled her coffee on him and bolted out. we still avoid that damn starbucks.”

“okay, we don’t make her flirt then,” sophia nodded to herself and manon laid back on the couch with a resigned sigh. “any other propositions?”

“we teach her.” all heads turned to daniela, who despite just speaking out, was busy watching tiktok’s with yoonchae.

“… what?”

“what?” the latina finally looked away from the younger girl’s phone. “i mean, i could do it.”

“no!” lara stood up immediately, as if burned. “begone, you freak! you’ll teach her to be horny or something. whisper ‘mami’ into poor y/n’s ear. i’m not having them getting freaky in my room!”

“it’s also their room-“

“TOO BAD-”

“okay!” the leader clapped her hands, automatically silencing everyone. “the idea is good. the execution isn’t working. how about.. me and yoonchae do it?”

the korean girl looked up from her phone, unimpressed.

daniela also looked unimpressed, maybe a little offended. lara, in contrast, slowly nodded her head. “maybe i won’t have to cleanse the room after all…”

“perfect, it’s settled,” manon stood up with a yawn. “can we make dinner? i’m starving.”

“… we’re discussing megan’s love life and you think about food?”

“didn’t lara complain about them devouring each other or something?”

“fair point.”

the prep talk sophia and yoonchae gave megan wasn’t anything interesting, but it was certainly eye opening. all that stuff about ‘being yourself’ etc was something she’s hear before but… you made her want to try. truly try.

at the same time, you grew fond of your little reading dates with megan. calling it dates was an overexaggeration, but you liked using that label in your head.

most of the time, megan was quiet as you read the book to her. you could feel her staring, but her gaze was weird whenever you’d catch her eye. it wasn’t anything like you’d seen before. you prided yourself in being able to read your members pretty good, but this wasn’t the case. megan suddenly wasn’t an open book to you, pun intended.

it was kind of weird. you debated asking one of the other members, maybe lara, until one evening, megan suddenly bolted to your room before you could even take your boots off. you took notice of the fact that the other members glanced amongst themselves like they knew more than they were letting on, but no one said anything.

filled with suspicion, you slowly made your way to your room.

right there, in the middle of the room, stood megan with an awkward smile on her lips and a small package in her hands.

“i’m not good with words,” she started speaking before you could even react. “and you know that. you’ve seen me read. but…”

she took a small step towards you, her gaze hopeful. “i… you helped me a lot, y/n. it was stupid, really, because i was a little sad in the evening, and you offered to read me a book. did you know i don’t have a favourite book? i’ve always had trouble reading long works.”

her voice was a little shaky, despite how much she’s been practicing this in her head.

“i wanted to write you a letter, cause i saw online that that’s romantic. i accidentally tore the paper while trying to spell ‘enamoured’.” a tiny chuckle left your lips and she took that as her sign to continue. “so i wanna do something else. something… me?”

megan finally stopped talking before walking closer to you, nervousness evident in her step. her fingers wrapped around your wrists gently, bringing your hand to the small box she had in her hold.

“i know you don’t play games a lot, but… i found a ‘the witcher’ for switch? we could play together, maybe…?”

“megan…” your other hand slowly found her cheek, your own flushed slightly. “is this your way of confessing?”

“yes,” the chinese girl nodded her head, her smile only getting wilder. “and asking you out on a date. will you, y/n, play the witcher with me?”

you stared at megan for a couple seconds. really got a good look at her, at the way her eyes glimmered with hope, her lips stretched in a stupid grin.

“… yes, mei,” you gently picked the small box from her hands—presumably the game for her switch—and hugged her gently. “i was… i was hoping you’d ask that. i like you a lot, stupid.”

“that’s great!” she was practically a happy puppy. if megan had a tail, it would be wagging by now. “because i like you too! a super ton!”

“finally!” was heard behind the door. but you didn’t pay attention to that, too busy enjoying the cute moment with you fresh lover.

✶⋆.˚ You never would have thought the act of giving Megan one of your lip balms would start a domino effect, but when Megan goes live. Everything comes to light, even the moments she wishes to forget.

“Babe? You remember where I put my lip balm?” Megan screams across your room. Her hands rummaging through a duffle bag of clothes like her life depends on it. Clothes fly onto the floor at lighting speed as she paces around the bed.

“Nope!” you yell back from your washroom, “checked your jacket?”

Megan sprints to her hoodie that she lazily hung over your chair last night. She practically throws the jacket around, waiting to see if her lip balm falls out. “Nothing still!” she stresses as her hands tangle around her hair. “The car is coming to pick me up in 15 minutes and I need my lip balm. Where the heck could I have put it-”

“You need one or is it just special, babes?” you ask calmly, re-entering the room with something dangling between your fingers.

Megan sighs, sitting down on the ground in exhaustion as she groans, “I just need one for rehearsals today or else my lips are going to absolutely kill me!” A pout rising onto her tired features, “I swear it was just here…”

You chuckle at your girlfriends antics, “I’ll look around for it-”

The girl cuts you off, her hands running over her cheeks in stress, “it was the one from the Glossier collab too! I got it for free! I mean when am I gonna get such a good deal in my life again-”

“Sweetheart,” you say, unable to help the grin that rises to your face as you sit down beside her. “Take my lip balm, it’s also from Glossier… With a red sharpie mark, but still from Glossier nonetheless. I’ll look for yours. Sounds good?” you propose as you hand her the tube of lip balm you had pinched between your fingers.

Your girlfriend's head bounces up and down at a ferocious pace. “Yes! You’re a literal lifesaver! This is even better than the one before!” she squeals while her arms wrap around your torso, moving you onto her lap.

A giggle erupts from your mouth, “okay okay! You’re gonna be late for the car, and we can’t have your management getting all moody at you, babes.”

“Fine, fine, whatever you say!” she smiles, moving you off her lap, and jumping onto her feet. You throw your head back in laughter, the sound rippling through the room as your girlfriend grabs your hands, and pulls you back onto your feet. With a few steps to the side, you crouch down beside her bag, and throw all of her clothes back in, handing it off to your girl.

“See you in a few, okay?” you say with a step forward, fixing Megan's bangs with your fingers.

“Gonna miss you,” she replies, stepping backwards towards your apartment door. Before you could even respond, she added, “and you’re not getting the lip balm back!”

“Whatever, miss you too, babes!” you say. Then, with a roll of your eyes, and a smile you can’t push down, the apartment door clicked closed. The place didn’t feel the same without her.

It's been months since Megan has last seen you. With comebacks, and tours, and festivals on festivals, she feels like her schedule is practically collapsing in on itself. The time to do absolutely anything was scarce, and the time between your calls had widened like never before. She fiddled with her lip balm, your lip balm, as she opened up weverse. The second that free time appeared on her schedule, management shoved another live stream in her way. All in the name of public engagement. Who was she to refuse? She set the screen up, pointing towards her, leaning against a random vase, a vase that used to be full of flowers you’d given her. Now empty after they had wilted. With shaky hands, she pressed the go live button.

“Guys… it’s been so long,” Megan smiles, the gesture falling short of its usual intensity, “did everyone enjoy the new comeback?”

Wait… That’s a crazy name guys,” she chuckles reading through the title.

“SHUT UP!” Manon says as her jaw drops. Immediately standing up to help Megan look for the small tube. The rest of the group follows. Some staff are even heard rummaging behind the camera. 

“Oh wait! I just didn’t feel it the first time. Sorry guys,” Megan says timidly with one hand in her pocket, and the guiltiest expression on her face.

“MEGAN!” everyone in the room chanted in unison before they burst out in laughter.

Daniela speaks, trying to hold back her laughter, “Megan what are you doing?”

“LOST THE LIP BALM,” the Chinese girl practically screams as she holds her back pack upside down, causing all the contents to fall onto the airport carpet.

“On the airport ground… Really?” Lara says, muffling her laughter with her sleeve before crouching down beside Megan to help her search. 

“It’s the one from her!!” Megan replies, voice full of panic.

Daniela sets the phone down onto an airport seat, pointing the camera at the scene before joining the small search party. A few moments later, Manon returns, asking the group, “what the heck??”

“Code red, lip balm gone,” Lara responds like it’s the most normal emergency ever.

[Overlay: Very important lip balm I suppose… hmm]

“Oh…” Manon remarks awkwardly.

“What?” Megan says, head snapping back towards the girl. Her hands stop scrambling at the oldest’s words.

“You told me to hold onto it when we were in line at the cashier, Megan. Here,” Manon says, pulling the tube out from her pocket.

Megan jumps up, her whole mood lifting as she pocketed the tube, “Oh my god! Thank you, thank you!!”

Lara and Daniela just look at each other with the most unimpressed expression ever. Both speaking up at the same time, “all this for nothing?”

“Sorry…” Megan muffles, awkwardly scratching the back of her neck.

“So who's cleaning all of this up? We’re boarding in 5… Sophia told me to grab you guys,” Manon says, pointing to the pile of things on the ground.

Silence ensues before everyone drops down to the floor, throwing the miscellaneous objects back into Megan’s bag.

“WAIT A HAIR WAS ON THAT PEN”

“STOP GET IT OUT!”

“AHHHH”

“IT’S OUT STOP PANICKING”

The camera shakes as the group sprints to the boarding gate.
