SMUT : I don't tend to write smut often at all, as its not my favorite by any means (I'm ace so my drive to write smut is next to nonexistent), but I don't mind when it happens. I'd rather it happen organically though.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Close Friend Ep 2 (JaFirst) - First is a cat. No actually a cat. It was WEIRD. Cute, but creeping towards beastiality. It reminded me of that strange series out of China (@heretherebedork says Youth in the Breeze). The most amusing thing to me was that the cat used Thai formal linguistic register when of course cats would use informal rude guu mueng with EVERYONE. No cat would use pom. Don’t be ridiculous, Thailand. 

Second Chance Ep 5 - still invested, things progressed for all 3 couples, in one direction or another. They cuties. I love them. Carry on. 

Y-Destiny Ep 5 - the “virgin scoreboard” is gonna make the seme real hard to redeem with this pairing. If they bother. This might be a life lesson episode. What does it remind me of? Oh yes. Kids. *SHUDDER* Point of interest: did you notice Team uses ha with Mon? What a pushy flirt. 

Lovely Writer Ep 10 - honestly I just love it when Poppy shows up in anything, why is he such a delightful screen presence? (Gene’s brother) Sorry, distracted. What happened in this one? Oh, ya know, stuff and things. Family drama. (It is just me or have they been giving us some long ass episodes lately?) Obligatory beach trip activated. (Result = dumb probability mathematics jokes.) Next week it looks like we have Keeping Actor’s Closeted 101. You know the Casting Couch? This is the Casting Closet. 

Fish Upon The Sky Ep 4 - early stage confession, how fun. It’s not unprecedented it just usually means we are in 4 act structure, not 3, which means Fish might go more serious than I thought. Honestly? I’m losing interest mostly because I’ve gone from mild annoyance to active dislike of Pi. Happened to me with Tine too. They better redeem this obtuse tsundere uke soon or he’s not tsundere at all he’s just a jackwit. 

Brothers Ep 13 fin - a kiss and the family finds out about the not-so-brotherly brothers, drama, graduation, THE END. My side-dish happy heart made thumps over Q + delivery boy, I’m sad they got so little screen time. My babies KhunKaow did get a tiny coming out sequence as such. I’m seriously considering doing myself a bootleg of just the KhunKaow plot, but that means I’d have to rewatch the whole darn series and I can’t STAND the idea. Which should give you insight into how not good this show it. Very NOT good. Must we get a season 2? Please stop now, Line. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 7 - Muren is the cutest peanut and anyone who says otherwise can fight me, although they probably have to go through Licheng first. I was NOT invested in these two at the beginning, but as a couple? They own my soul. The other storyline is still the dumpster fire that I can’t decide to roast marshmallows over (knowing they’ll get tinged with eu de trash) or flee from in horror clutching my pearls and my nose. H4 continues to provide the quality psyche torture I’ve come to expect from this franchise. *sarcastic thumbs up*  *** A word on seeing Boxiang show up (side dish from H3:MODC). It was an unexpected pleasure, I loved his pairing (May/December is a winner for me *glares at Method*) but I do think it was a bone from the franchise telling us that we are never getting that spin-off or reboot that people yearn for. However, how AWESOME that Licheng has someone to go to and ask about topping properly. Otherwise he’s sure to have screwed it up. (Pun intended.) 

Papa & Daddy (Tailwan) Ep 1-2 - this came out of nowhere and is ADORABLE. Applies a ton of BL tropes (cheek kiss, his closet, B&W stripes, drag baby around, boop) but what IS it? More slice of gay domesticity than romance. Like 2019′s Kinou Nani Tabeta? or currently airing Close Friend. I enjoy this style, very wholesome, but I’m not sure what to call it. (Bonus points for cutie lesbians.) A bit weird to have a kid with your partner and STILL not be out to your parents. I hope they aren’t going to throw in a break up for dramatic effect. 

My Lascivious Boss (Vietnam) Ep 4 - I’m really enjoying this series. It’s unabashedly queer, although there’s some problematic stuff lurking under the wig. How it ends is gonna dictate if they handled this stylishly. But hot damn the leads ZING on screen together and their crackling prank-flirting is a joy to watch. 

Word of Honor (China) Ep 31-33 - moving into the home stretch. Big rescue and the band is back together (presumably for the final slaughter). Then a death! *this is my shocked face* Did I tear up? Of course I did. 4 act structure is designed for maximum pathos during the final 1/4. Did we all faint from the symbolism of the love token hair stick being gently thrust into Ah Xu’s bun? Sure we did. All that and sill I’m flagging. This is a long-arse show. Save me, Korea, with your iItsy bitsy teenie weenie...

Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korea) Ep 5-6 - I am getting such strong 12th Night vibes from this. Tae Hyung is now brigadier of BL’s historical himbo brigade. (To be deployed whenever you are in need of poetry or a cut sleeve.) This show is all ridiculous charm and I LOVE it. Although, five seconds of Lee Sang is not enough Lee Sang. I had to immediately rewatch Wish You.

Top Secret Together (Thai) May 14, Line TV. 5 couples, one IRL (Newyear from I Am Your King), story arcs revolve around secrets.  - I’m getting fatigued by these multi-couple sampler pack dramas, but I’ll try it for Newyear’s sake.  

Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan YES!) May 20, Viki. Office set, relationships prohibited at work by a new boss, one of the employees is determined to figure out why. Grumpy/tsundere pairing so loads of drama. - I am so flipping excited for this one. A 4th BL series from Taiwan in less than a year? That’s unprecedented. GO BABY ISLAND GO! 

I Promised You the Moon (Thai) May 27, Line TV. Follow up to I Told Sunset About You with the boys now at university. - I won’t be watching this as I have yet to finish season 1. 

Possibly Gameboys season 2.  - Rumors are all over the place right now on this.

i think I asked before, but what do you think makes a compelling main character? and how about a compelling friend group (like for the mc, u know)?

idk if you've asked before tbh. i suppose the answer would change from person to person, as what compels me won't compel you, etc, etc, but personally i love flaws. :3 and i don't mean stupid "my fatal flaw is loyalty" lol die 🤨

i mean like i killed a man, my parents really messed me up, i feel responsible for some huge tragedy early on in my life (gonna kill leo but yeah that premise was fire--pun not intended), sort of shit PLUS little things, like always being 2 angry or snappish or whatever. i love mc's who just make sense u feel? like ur angry at the world but ur angry at urself but u hate ur siblings but u love them bc xyz happened to u and u did xyz. or even the complete opposite ur too apathetic bc xyz happened to u and u did this and that's super fucked up and clinical as hell and are u even alive. LOVE being able 2 feel what they feel, deep pov makes me lose my mind. give me the mcs who are hungry, starved for ambition or love or a legacy to leave behind or peace or family or whatever. love love love it to be built outward, one central theme, one starburst that everything else builds upon and the stakes just keep getting higher and higher...

i also like when mcs have agency over their own lives. sounds like a such a straightforward “duh ofc they should” but people would be surprised, i think, at how few mcs actually play large roles in their own lives. idc if their choices just mean they continue to make everything worse, but i want it to be their saving grace or their hand to make them fall.

finally, i like smart mcs. like if u want them to be dumb and hot and snazzy or whatever that’s fine but they can still be smart do u know what i mean? like that oblivious “oh that creepy guy w the chainsaw was the murderer????” or “he was in love w me the whole time?????” surprised pikachu shit pisses me off common sense is necessary for mcs

as for their posse, i just enjoy variety, i don’t care how. hate when authors make the same character w different faces + names just bc they’re personally obsessed w that archetype but that’s a rant for another time. give me all the stupid tropes and extremes. super short and tallies and gays and thin ice straights, and that one guy who’s just a himbo, and a bimbo, and then that one smart ass, and then the fuckboy, and that guy obsessed w flowers and fairies, and whatever i don’t even CARE, so long as they are all 1. treated w the same depth as the mc instead of only being reduced to the archetypes their character stemmed from originally, 2. there aren’t too many of them (this reduces the ability to connect w them), 3. there is a purpose for them. it’s dumb to stick a bunch of people together just for aesthetics or laffs or whatever. they need to influence the mc dramatically somehow, and more importantly, the mc needs to impact them. bc they too are people w their own lives which do not revolve around the mc and that needs to b explored. they need to impact each other as well without the mc at all. give me all the interrelationships and messy squares and triangles and hexagons platonic and romantic and familial and everything. drag up the past if they’ve been together forever, or build the tension and drama and unshakeable faith if they’re newbies thrown into the ring together.

What would u do if u could change anything about anything in the series?

I’m gonna assume you’re talking about Hero’s Of Olympus, since I want to talk about it. Let’s start with the relationship each of the 7 had with one another/character dynamics.

Percy. We know who he is, we’ve met him before, we’ve lived through his adventure with him. He’s a shithead, we love this about him, but he’s also kind and loving. Percy would’ve made an effort to get along with everyone, to be friends and goof off to help everyone feel better. Which is why all of this shit Rick created with Jason being his Roman counter part and them being rivals, the two “macho men fighting for power to lead the pack” makes NO goddamn sense. And quite frankly smells HEAVY of toxic masculinity the entire series could’ve gone without. They would’ve been friends. Maybe not the best of friends because Jason has Leo but they would’ve been those two dumb jock friends and that narrative bettween them would’ve made the story so much more fun and interesting than pitting them against eachother.

Annabeth. The trope Rick created with Annabeth being a know it all, smartest person in the group is a disservice to her character and makes her shallow. She’s the daughter of a goddess of wisdom, wisdom recognizes intelligence when it sees it, and the fact that all Annabeth thought about Leo during the entire book was that he was annoying is VERY dumb. They could’ve had a really good friendship, two nerds playing off of one another’s intellect to create things that could benefit everyone on their journey. Or even Leo just convincing her to help him make stupid shit like a toaster that can toast eight pieces of bread at once. I would change how rigid Annabeth is, loosen her up just a little bit and make her friendship with Leo the type of thing where they constantly feed off of one another.

Piper. Her entire character arc revolved around being beautiful, being Native American, and Jason. Firstly, we’d have to throw away all the stereotypes and general horrible things that Mr. Rick Ross (read: Rick) did to her character. Like the whole feathers in her hair thing. There are better way to incorporate Piper being Native American, there were so many missed opportunities to intertwine Greek mythology and Native American beliefs. Secondly, in order to get rid of the. Frankly, shit, way Piper dealt with beauty is to first address the way the Aphrodite cabin as been treated through the entirety of the PJO universe. Instead of writing Aphrodite children like frilly little things that can’t stand to get their hands dirty and Piper being “not like other girls uwu”, I would’ve written them as deceptivly beautiful. Deceptive in the fact that no one expects them to be strong, cruel, to be able to hold their own. Knights you mistake for damsels in distress, and before you realize you’re wrong they’ve already defeated you. You can be strong and feminine, and femininity isn’t the only way to be beautiful, so I would’ve explored that too. And Pipers arc on beauty would’ve been different in the sense that she realizes she doesn’t have to like pink and glitter in order to be beautiful, and that even if she did like those things, that’s okay. Let girls be feminine without demonizing them for it.

Hazel. God Hazel was done so dirty. First, she’s thirteen, so no Frazle shit, jot that one down. Her and Frank being really good friends would’ve been so much better and allowed her to grow as a person without throwing her into some serious romantic relationship so young with someone so much older. I would’ve written Hazel as very cautious, specifically around her white friends. She comes from the 40’s of course she wouldn’t be buddy buddy with them immediately, and I think that would be a valid concept for the books to explore. And besides, her realizing later on that things really are different and times really have changed would be such a heartwarming thing to experience. Her breaking out of her shell and leaving that shit behind her to be unapologetically her. Actually exploring the racism and prejudice in the world instead of ignoring it and erasing the experiences of black people and black youth in this world is problematic and we won’t be doing that here smh. I wouldn’t make it the core of her character because that’s wack but it also wouldn’t be something that’s just never talked about. That being said, I would’ve made her relationship with Leo SO GREAT. They could’ve been dumbasses together running around the ship playing stupid games like hide and seek. Once again, instead of that romance shit, I would’ve built their friendship. Let the girl have fun, she’s 13 for gods sake.

Jason. The essence of his character was to be Percy Jackson’s Roman counterpart, which IS WACK. It made him VERY boring and one sided, so away with that! The Jason I had hopes for and wanted to see was, in simple words, a blond Himbo Jock!!! He loves his found family (Piper, Leo, and later the rest of the seven) and he PROTECT!! He and Percy would get in mock fights and wrestle sometimes because Percy says something very stupid and Jason simultaneously wants to laugh and shake him and he and Leo have the type of friendship where even the last few barriers come down and they are unapologetically themselves with one another. Jason learning that he doesn’t have to be a grown up and that he doesn’t have to have such a rigid sense of responsibility and that it’s okay to have fun sometimes, things Leo and Percy teach him. He grows into himself and realizes that he’s not JUST a son of Jupiter, and he doesn’t have to be a leader all the time. It’s okay to let go of the reins, and be stupid.

Frank. Rick made him... so forgettable. Firstly, the fatphobic blessing of Mars shit. We can hit next on that shit: the blessing of Mars but Frank goes from chubby to chubby with muscle because believe it or not a lot of fat people have muscles!! The arch with him wanting to be a child of Apollo is VERY interesting and something that should’ve been played up more within his arc until he realized he didn’t have to prove to anyone how manly he is, that you don’t HAVE to be aggressive and manly to be a child of Mars. Once again: Rick was on some toxic masculinity shit. Frank being okay with being a big teddy bear is enough for me. Also fuck the burning stick of life things stop putting a time limit on teenagers lives that’s bullshit. His relationship his Hazel was rushed and shallow, and quite frankly (ha) they should’ve just been friends.

Last but not least: Leo. Leo’s relationships with EVERYONE could’ve been better. He was treated as the comic relief, an annoyance, someone everyone could barely stand to be around, and instead of bettering his relationships with everyone Rick thought killing him off and then bringing him back with a love interest was the best thing to do. He was the treated as an emotional whipping board and then gave his life to save everyone on some sacrificial lamb shit which is a fucking cop out. In my head, Leo would’ve remained single, he would’ve felt like an outcast in the beginning, yes, but his friends would have actually noticed and reminded him that they value him as a person. I would’ve also built Leo’s arc so that he realizes the only validation he needs from anyone is himself, and that he wasn’t responsible for his mother’s death. I would’ve also written him realizing he has a support system amongst his friends, and he doesn’t need to overexert himself trying to fit because he’s already one of them. Leo has an inferiority complex and that was the core of him sacrificing himself, he felt like, if anyone, it would be him. He felt that he wasn’t as important as any of the other 7. He wouldn’t have died so other people could live, his life would’ve mattered to everyone including himself.

he first came to mind to me awhile back when at the time i was thinking of putting together an rp group that takes place at a mall, and he essentially was just gonna be this ‘dumb of ass, pure of heart’ kind of a muse that either worked at like a radio shack or in a comic store and even tho the rp never ended up becoming a thing i kept him close to my heart and he’s just been there ever since.

he grew up in texas w his 2 twin siblings and a single mom, their dad just sort of bolted when mig was just around 6 and he grew up p quickly after that, wanting to do all that he can to help his mama out being the man of the house, and the closest thing to a paternal figure his siblings have ever had. bc of this he didn’t end up going to college but he doesn’t regret it for a second, taking any off end job that he could find so that he can still provide for his fam. he’s kind of a floater due to having the majority of his life being revolved around being a caretaker and provider but this he also doesn’t really mind either, he’s just doing his thing and letting the chips fall where they may, despite kind of being at a lose now that his siblings are old enough to care for themselves and his mom’s business now taking off, so he’s just kind of tryna figure things out. personality wise this babie is still a true child at heart, loving kids cartoons, will be the type to ask for a kids menu and a margarita and will also tell you the moon is made out of cheese (smh) he’s not necessarily the brightest but he makes up for it w such a big heart and love for all his friends and family, he adores them all so so much and would give them the absolute world if he could, god knows he absolutely TRIES, he’s everyone’s local hype man and an honorary older brother to all, he just wants everyone to be good and cared for 🥺 he ironically lacks self care despite his instincts to care for everyone else so his meals are usually microwaveable or shaped like dinosaurs. he’s got big stoner energy (he’s also a stoner)kind of just super down for whatever be that lazying around on the couch or going out to do smth spontaneous and uses words like rad and sick and my guy/dude a lot

he has thoughts about his dad who has left them behind when he was just a kid and the twins being too young to even remember him at all; he’s angry that he never got to have a dad of his own and is sometimes terrified of that anger still deeply rooted inside of him. he KNOWS that he wants kids but bc of his dad he’s really scared that he might mess up the same way somehow, he doesn’t want it to turn into a cycle so he’s hesitant when the topic goes to having a family of his own despite it being smth that he wants so so badly, he just wants to do his best by them bc that’s truly all they would deserve.

there’s this verse i have w a friend where he is her son ale’s cousin where after their dad left, ale’s dad stepped in to help out and be the dad for mig and his brother and sister, meaning they all just sort of lumped together as one big fam, gaining a brother (ale) and an older sister (barbie) and honestly i adore it so freakin much, i would die for that big conjoined family folks yes indeed

he is bi af and can crush on ppl fairly quickly, and he’s not v good at being subtle about it in any way, shape, or form, either, he’s just a cute lil puppy, i swear, it’s adorable but also like hello yes put the heart eyes away pls, we are in PUBLIC, on the flip side he is the densest in the WORLD when it comes to someone liking HIM, cannot pick up on hints to save his life and will legit be like “...you mean like as a friend” when/if someone says they love him dcsfvswff he has two ships, one w this lil hippie artist babe named rae (dove cameron fc) and they met at a carnival hitting it off right off the bat and we haven’t done much w them bc busy but goddamn it are they adorable as hell. the other one is w this cute paramedic named gabe (alberto rosende fc) who’s mig’s childhood friend that helped him figure out he was bi but he didn’t realize it until much later and they ran into each other again in their late 20’s and hit it off since and they are so freakin preCIOUS, I SWEAR, they’re kind of end game and thinking about it just makes me so freakin HAPPY

other lil things/ hcs about him: he adopted a doggo named duke and he’s this tiny lil babie who’s also a piece if shit and mig loves him w all his HEART, he’s learning how to pick up guitar and sings a lil bit but doesn’t really do much w it, has a tattoo sleeve and is always wanting more, tyler’s nose ring is canon bc ofc it is hello? he skateboards around to get to where he’s gotta go, tries to practice tricks indoors smh, owns so many freakin hawaiian shirts idk he freaking loves them, it’s like a collection now, also owns a lot of snap backs but are we surprised??? smokes the weed, what he does to unwind when he needs it

all and all he’s just my lil goof ball babie who’s heart is so big and adore him, my friend said it best when to describe him she said “he’s the maternal dad friend w the personality of the youngest sibling” this got super long and even all this i don’t feel freaking summed him up all around but i appreciate you sending this sm thank you omg

Happy Storyteller Saturday! What are some common archetypes in your characters? Do they see those archetypes in themselves, or do they see themselves as something completely different?

I wasn’t sure what exactly you meant by archetype (LOTS of definitions and examples right there) so I went with:

Antiheroes. I make so many fucking antiheroes. I’d say that the majority of my stories revolve around antiheroes because I don’t really like the whole motivated hero thing (except Rosie), and while villains are fun, most of my stories are man vs self, with the character (or their mental illness, because all of my characters have mental illnesses [don’t @ me]) being their own villain. Oftentimes my characters don’t see themselves as heroes in any capacity (except Rosie, again) and wouldn’t define themselves as such.

Max, for example, is the main character in my big bad WIP, Crazy Kid. He’s the antihero and the villain, because he’s constantly battling with himself to try and achieve what he sees as happiness: being neurotypical. But at the same time, he doesn’t have the energy to fight very hard and really half-asses his attempts at recovery. For most of the novel he sees himself as a pathetic druggie/slacker/ crazy kid (ThE tItLe Of ThE nOvEl!!) and only at the end thinks of himself as the main character in his own life (where previously his life heavily revolved around his boyfriend Quincy). We stan a recovery story!

On the other hand… Rosie sees himself as a straight up hero, in a roundabout way. Sure, he’s a petty criminal that cheats in casinos and pickpockets rich people, but A) Is that really a bad thing, and B) He’s still the absolute nicest dude you’ll ever meet. He goes out of his way to be helpful and doesn’t even charge for professional labor. He’s comfortable with himself, and he genuinely believes that his purpose in life is to help others. Pure of heart and dumb of ass. I wouldn’t call him a complete himbo, but he’s himbo-adjacent.

OKAY SO the premise of the movies in case you don’t know!! giselle, a typical fairytale character from a typical fairytale world called andalasia, becomes engaged to prince edward. edward’s mother, the token evil queen, is convinced giselle is trying to steal her throne and pushes giselle into a portal to a new world - new york city. giselle waits for edward to come rescue her while exploring the strange new world and getting to know the people who have taken her in - a lawyer called robert and his six year old daughter morgan. the second movie is set a decade after the first, about giselle and her family moving from the city to find a fresh start.

SO james marsden’s character is prince (later king) edward!! he’s a stereotypical self obsessed heroic prince, but he does have a good heart and genuinely does care for giselle <33 all he really wants is his happily ever after with his dream girl and a life taking care of his kingdom and battling monsters on the weekends

he and giselle are only engaged for a day (they have the typical fairytale romance where the prince saves the damsel in distress and they ride off into the sunset as fated lovers,, it was just a bit sidetracked by giselle falling into an isekai) but when he finds out she’s been transported to another world he immediately rushes in to save her !! his parts of the movie just revolve around him (and his evil-not-evil sidekick nathaniel) trying and failing to find giselle :]

PERSONALITY WISE HES. a total himbo i’m gonna b real. dumb as rocks most of the time. but like i said he has a good heart and he’s super sweet and fights for the ppl he loves <33 he also has STRONG puppy vibes there’s a scene in the first movie where he and giselle go on a date and a scene in the second movie where he runs off after robert and in both of them he just seems so much like a lost little puppy wandering around he’s so cute 😭

there’s also two scenes in the second movie which are SO CUTE,, one where he tries to give robert his sword as a gift and it’s so awkward bc robert Does Not Want A Sword but edward is literally like 🥺 the whole time bc hes trying to be friends,, and one at the end where the gang are at a picnic and he shows up in his full king attire and starts play sword fighting w kids (and losing miserably) HES SOOO CUTE

in conclusion he’s literally just a little guy + he’s so important to me hes my best friend. mr marsden are you perhaps free this weekend

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

I’ve been an RPG dork my entire life, but a few series have escaped my notice. Breath of Fire. Ys. Secret of Mana. Until this year, Xenoblade Chronicles. I didn’t own a Wii U, and I wanted to wait for a deep discount to give the first game a try on Switch. That’s not a thing that happens for a lot of Nintendo titles, so when I saw how geeked the fan base was when XBC 3 was announced, I caved and bought the Definitive Edition of the first game on Switch. 

I loved it, and promptly bought and finished XBC 2 a month before the third game in the series was released. I’m pleased to report that I have liked each entry in the series more than the game before it. They are standalone games with callbacks to earlier titles in the series (more overtly in XBC 3 than XBC 2). They share some commonalities such as overly complex combat systems centered around positioning and cooldowns, and worlds built upon enormous, defunct titans.

                                              Sena is the girl with the gall!

The premise of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is that people in this world are “born” as young adults and live for only 10 years before being returned to the source to be reborn again. The world is divided into colonies in the two warring nations of Agnus and Keves, so that 10 years of life is spent in conflict and seeing the end of it is not guaranteed. In fact, they hold a big fancy-ass ceremony to celebrate you being absorbed back into the source if you live the full 10 years. And the queen herself is there!

Each colony has an ever-draining flame clock that fills by absorbing the spirits of dead enemies, and if the flame clock ever runs dry then everyone in that colony perishes. So, to sum up:

- Everyone lives for 10 years max - You stay alive by killing other colonies

It’s pretty fucking bleak. With so much killing around, it’s not surprising that every colony has what is called an “off-seer.” They mourn the fallen on the battlefields by playing a solemn song on the flute, which is more moving than it sounds here.

You play as Agnus’ off-seer named Noah and you, along with your himbo buddy Lanz and your friend Eunie, who is pretty cool despite having the dumb wings on her head...they’re not her fault and they don’t make her a bad person. FUCK I don’t like that look though. Anyway, the three of you get up to some shit with people from the enemy kingdom of Keves, and you all end up as outcasts together. Anime happens, and they end up being able to fuse souls/bodies with their Kevesi counterparts, forming cool mech things called Ouroboros. Even in the world of Xenoblade, that’s weird. 

Predictably, they all get used to one another and gain a mutual, grudging respect and eventually a deep friendship. You might say “It seems pretty fucked up that people have 10-year lives as soldiers and then die” and I would agree. It seems obvious that everyone would question it, but then again if that is the only life you know, maybe you roll with it. Like people do every day. For example, we have enough resources to feed and shelter every person, but we don’t. Someone looking in from the outside might go “Huh, that makes no sense. It isn’t believable.”

Anyway, the video game is great. 

I hesitate to call Noah the main character, because Xenobalde Chronicles 3 has a wonderful ensemble cast. Your three companions from Keves are Mio with her cute cat ears, the socially awkward tactician Taion, and sporty girl Sena. The aww-shucks optimism of Sena in particular stood out to me. The game has all of the anime melodrama and the triumph of friendship against impossible odds that I have grown to love in these games. 

The combat system, once again, is overly complex. It requires a great deal of patience to master, and it’s incredibly rewarding. The battle system takes place in real time with 7 party members (the main cast of 6 plus one hero of your choosing) and revolves around positioning and cooldown management. To the uninitiated, it’s an overwhelming nightmare of icons and meters. 

The game has job classes for the first time, each falling under Attacker, Defender, or Support roles - familiar to anyone who has played MMO’s or MOBA’s. The way new job classes are acquired is by finding heroes in the world and completing their quests. They join up with your group and you gain access to their class. Similar to Bravely Default II, this kept me engaged with the game’s side quests and helped drive me through the story - not that I needed it. 

The game’s world is massive and gorgeous. It feels like an MMO world, in a good way. After nearly 100 hours in the game, I was still finding new spaces in areas I had already explored. I was engaged with the main quest and side quests, the combat is fun, the soundtrack is fantastic, my only beef with the game is the villains. They look like Power Rangers baddies*. They frequently show the big bad in an actual empty movie theater, watching the events unfold on a screen. Which I found goofy at first, but the longer it went on the more it grew on me. 

 I fell in love with the crew, and there is plenty of banter between them. I also dig the camping - the game is full of campsites, and the wide variety of background animations does a lot to flesh out the relationships between the group. I spent a lot of time doing optional side quests because they creators gave me a world I wanted to luxuriate in, and characters I wanted to know better. The game had some genuinely funny moments (Mio debating whether to keep her long hair out of respect for a certain character, then blurting out “It’s such a pain in arse to wash!” and some genuinely touching moments, like the group learning about childbirth and seeing an infant for the first time.

The story goes some interesting places, putting its characters in interesting scenarios and forcing them to confront some harsh truths, and seeing their growth over the course of the story is a delight. The story gets up its own ass in a way I appreciate. Of all the heights this game reaches, the most memorable might be the ending. I’ve played a lot of JRPG’s. The journey is often better than the destination. Few endings have really stuck with me over the years. Persona 3. Dragon Quest VIII. Final Fantasy XV. Xenoblade Chronicles 3′s ending is up there with the best of them. It felt like a beautiful, melancholy culmination of everything that led up to it. Every facet of the game is a winner.

This one will stay with me. 

*I never watched Power Rangers.

I admit that I have not done most of part 2 of the main story so I spent most of my days tryna catch up to it instead of farming for mats (that I end up using everything almost immediately because I cannot learn how to save up anything for my life) until I reach the part where we find Rackam again and all the talk about the ship. My heart, as always, stolen because this man is so loyal. uwu

OKAY i FELT the mats thing bc honestly? i should've saved up stuff but i said "haha Io 5* uncap go brrr" and oh no where are my materials-

also like??? most of the Nalhegrande arc involving Rackam made me- just- /yells bc he GOT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.... and it wasn't just revolving around his relationship w Noa!! i love Noa to death but like- hn Rackam is a complex character and he's not just a himbo, (but like. he sometimes is. heart of gold and dumb of ass)

anyway i really like the later story arcs, especially the start of the Utopia one!
