LI Book Headcanons
I've had this thought in my mind all day and NEED to get it out there.
(content warning: mentions of JK Rowling. Not to worry, it's bad mouthing her.)
Eden: his favourite damn series is Lord of the Rings. My man started with The Hobbit, then dived into Lotr. He's read EVERY. SINGLE. Elf song that the book has to offer. He's a fantasy nerd. However I would also see him read Pride and Prejudice. Perhaps some Terry Pratchett, too.
Avery: she grew up reading her parent's notes and bank account details. HOWEVER she's also read 50 Shades of Gray, and gave her the idea in mind that if she has enough money, she can acquire any lover she wants. REFUSES to acknowledge that it's Twilight fanfiction.
Kylar: speaking of Twilight, he is a FANATIC. adores the idea of being the misterious vampire, that attracts Bella in his unusual charm. He's read every book. And I mean every book, he's read the genderbent version, the Edward POV, anything written by Meyer he's read. He was neither team Jacob or Edward, he was team Kylar. Drew his self insert vampire oc with Bella NUMEROUS times.
Robin: he used to be a Potterhead. He was SO into it. Identified as a Hufflepuff, did the patronus and wand quizzes, his favourite book is the first one. He was in SHACKLES when JK Rowling came out as a gross terf. The level of betrayal he felt is indescribable. He woved to never touch the books again.
Sydney: do you know those books Christian oarents give to kids to let them know about Jesus early? Yeah, Sidney's read them. However, when she got freedom to grab her own books, she discovered that she DIGS Greek Mythology. She has a whole collection of Rick Riordan's books on the shelf, has attempted to draw her favourite characters. The movies don't exist to her and whenever anyone brings them up, she death stares them.
Alex: you know the Grimm fairy tales? Those are his favourites. Just the dark forest themes, the magic, the horror aspect of it... It just works for him. He's lived his whole life in the countryside, so he can fantasize about getting lost in the woods and finding a gingerbread house.
Whitney. I saved the best for last. So in hus childhood, in my headcanon he could never really afford to buy books, let alone his parents giving them to him. He read a bit of Dr Seuss but that was it. NOW that he can actually afford some stuff, he discovered the duality of man. Comics.
On one hand, he absolutely LOVES thise cute, kid friendly comics. Peanuts, Garfield, the Disney Mickey Mouse comics. On the other, he absolutely digs the over-the-top action manga shit. I'm talking Chainsaw Man, DevilMan by Go Nagai, Hells Angels by Shinichi Hiromoto. He doesn't have enough attention span to read a whole book, but he absolutely LOVES comics.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk!

I didn't have a lot of ideas....Please leave asks for hc requests if anyone wants to hear more *batting my eyelashes*
BEING NERD GEEKS
NDA 🏴☠️
Mythomagic card game fan (Obviously)
(Past) Pirate fanatic But if the topic comes up he gets hyped
I think he'd like Pokémon. (Personally idk much about it)
Potentially could have a huge advantage in Pokémon Go (With Shadow Travel).
Not the type to talk about his interests a lot, preferring to indulge by himself or discuss with a select few people.
Although when given the opportunity you can see the light visibly enter his lifeless eyes.
Him and Frank bond over picking up Mythomagic again as "Eventual In-Laws".
Probably still thinks to himself in Mythomagic terms when discussing Greek mythology.
"So how much HP did he lose" he ponders as he's meeting Lester Papadopoulos for the first time. (The answer is: Clearly A Lot)
WS 🔆
Star Wars fan (Obviously)
Has a ton of Lego Sets littered around Cabin 7
True Crime Listener (Confirmed in TSATS)
DHMIS (Past, but if you mention something even somewhat related it'll reawaken.) hyperfixation do not ask me how he landed on YouTube.com....i have no clue. I just think it'd be funny.
(Young 10 year old) Will at camp and one of his siblings ask "What are you interested in?" expecting some kind of hobby such as painting or singing and then all of a sudden you've got this kid yapping up a storm about a "Cult Leader Butterfly".
Rip Will Solace you would've loved YouTube Essays, and then getting frustrated when they're wrong about small minor details that only you care about.
The Type to Talk About Their Interests. Frequently. Certified Yapper. He can and will bring them up whenever to whomever. He can and will make references that nobody gets. He is a walking advertisement.
WHEN DISTRESSED
NDA 🏴☠️
Stands stiller.
He tries to keep them under control but his Powers act up a bit in the form of small bone bits and dead grass.
If he's deeply upset the ground might crack up (like in Titan's Curse) as if he's reaching out the Underworld or Wanting to dig up a ditch and lay with the dead.
WS 🔆
Pacer. Starts speed walking around like they've got places to be and multiple deadlines.
Sometimes starts glowing in distress without noticing. Possibly his own body trying to soothe itself?
Already fidgety but it increases when they're just feeling extra something whether it be upset or excited.
WHEN ANGRY
NDA 🏴☠️
Quick to get defensive and start arguing
He feels rage at 1 million percent
WS 🔆
Tends to suppress their feelings in the moment trying to make peace and or mediate whatever's going on
Skilled at staying level-headed, cause he has to be
Sometimes you just gotta bite your tongue
So he did once
Like Literally
It started Bleeding
He had to heal it himself
Screams in the Woods After particularly anger inducing situations
A few dryads are concerned about him. Mentally.
Sometimes (if it's too dark out) into his own pillow
Casually leaves screaming session as if nothing happened
"what do you mean you heard screaming in the woods" "maybe a dryad just had a really bad break-up"
WHEN TIRED (OR SLEEPING)
NDA 🏴☠️
Talks less and less
Can sleep anywhere
Under any condition
Like he could be in an active Tornado, snoring.
WS 🔆
Talks more and more
Getting increasingly less coherent and more nonsensical
What is bro yapping about
He can go for longer without rest (Thanks Apollo) but practically drops dead once they get the chance to sleep.
Like collapses and barely breathes. Someone had to be on "Check Will's Pulse" Duty before Nico was around to keep sensing that his boyfriend is not deceased.
Always ends up in an entirely different position when he wakes up versus how he slept
Apollo passed down trait of ending up in some Dramatic Damsel in Distress coded pose while unconscious to a large majority of his kids. Will included.
SCARS
NDA 🏴☠️
Littered in scars
Probably didn't seek out proper healing for a long while unless absolutely necessary, instead choosing to abuse Ambrosia and Nectar.
Even now that he does seek proper healing (usually), chooses to keep whatever scars he can.
Cause, "They Look Cool"
Makes him feel like a Pirate
WS 🔆
Heals quicker than the average demigod (Pro of being Apollo's Offspring)
Typically his wounds will start healing themselves like small cuts or minor bruising never lingering for too long.
Still takes steps to clean up and dress them. He is a professional of course, What kind of example is he setting if he leaves them be???
CLOTHES
NDA 🏴☠️
Nico goes through funnily extreme lengths to maintain his Son of Hades look
Will is still in the works of getting "Allergic to Color" approved as a valid allergy
No of course Will doesn't believe that, but he enjoys partaking in shenanigans
This man has managed to obtain the camp shirt IN BLACK. WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS CANONICALLY WEARING ORANGE? YOU MEAN TO TELL ME APHRODITE CABIN HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO UNLOCK NEW COLORS BEFORE THIS GUY DID? HE STICKS OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB? AMONG PEOPLE WHO ARE WEARING ORANGE???????????LMFAOOOO??????
Honestly I think he just does things to 1. See how much he can get away with 2. Watch Chiron visibly yearn for retirement.
Closet is very black with some white with a hint of brown cause like leather and also dirt.
Possibly just purchasing anything with a skull on it.
Is it cause Son of Hades or because it reminds him of Pirates the world may never know.
WS 🔆
Honestly just pulling stuff together
Their face is doing most of the work Really
Hasn't been the same ever since they discovered Crocs
Owns a Set of Rainbow Crocs
I don't see Nico stealing Will's clothes but I think they'd both enjoy the irony of a medic wearing a skull shirt aka Will wearing Nico's clothes.
Nico offers his jackets frequently in the winter or nights because Maria raised a gentleman. And also because Will is never ever truly prepared clothes-wise (he tries he really does it just never works out) and then he's just Standing there, shivering like a wet cat.

So... Did Hades Have Any Children At All?
It's very hard to tell wheter or not Hades indeed had any kids. The main reason for this is that Hades is believed to be impotent or at least infertile (though this is never specified in ancient sources) in about 90% of the myths. Which makes sense, considering the fact that he's the God of the Dead and rules over a realm where 99% of its residents are mortal souls.
But what about the other 10%? Well, he has less children than his brothers, that's for sure, and their number varies depending on the myths.
In some myths the Erinyes are considered to be his daughters, whom he conceived either with Nyx or Persephone. But both of these possibilities are labeled as weird by Greek Mythology Nerds because a) Nyx usually conceives her children either asexually or with Erebus, and b) it's very likeable that by the time when Persephone was kidnapped the Erinyes already existed. So people stick to the version where they are the daughters of Nyx and Erebus, and them being reffered to as the daughters of Hades is rather related to the way he treated them.
Another strange case is Plutus. Sometimes he's the son of Demeter and Iasion, sometimes the son of Tyche and Iasion, and sometimes he's the son of Demeter and Hades. Which would be cringe on many levels. Even weirder, Plutus is depicted both in the company of Demeter and Persephone, as well as in the company of Hades, and he's considered the younger brother of Melinoe and Zagreus even when they have completely different parents. My personal theory is that Plutus, being the God of Riches, was basically adopted by his uncle Hades (who's called The Rich One as Pluto) and he's currently treated like his son because they share some attributes. Also, Iasion was killed by Zeus, so he probably needed a new father figure (or someone who rules over the realm where the soul of his father lies now). Furthermore, Plutus is usually depicted either as a young boy or even as a child, so he's literally a babe.
And now, we will talk about the three divinities that are labeled as their children by the majority of this fandom: Macaria, Melinoe and Zagreus.
Macaria
Macaria is the one we know few to no things about. She is a daughter of Hades (who was basically mentioned only once in the Suda and that's how we know about her existence), and she's generally associated with a Blessed Death, being a softer counterpart of Thanatos. To make things a little bit complicated now, Heracles also named his daughter Macaria, so it's pretty hard to separate them both when you try to talk about any of them. Her mother is never mentioned, but technically it should be Persephone.
While specific descriptions of Macaria’s appearance are rare, she is often imagined as a serene and comforting presence, embodying the peace that comes with a blessed death. Unlike the fearsome depictions of other death-related deities, like Thanatos and Hecate, Macaria’s visage would likely be gentle, reflecting her role in easing the transition of the souls to the afterlife.
Since there are no recorded myths about Macaria, we can only guess about her personality based on the few mentions of her name and role. As the goddess of Blessed Death, Macaria would be compassionate and understanding. She represents the aspect of death that should not be feared. Instead it should be accepted as a natural and potentially beautiful part of the life cycle. Her demeanor would be calming, reassuring those on the verge of death.
Also, just as a little Fun Fact, some people ship her with Thanatos and consider them to be a natural pair, considering the fact that their attributes are making them complement each other. It's probably one of the most famous non-canon couples from Greek Mythology at this point.
Melinoe
Melinoe is the Goddess of Ghosts, and is also associated with Nightmares and Madness.
Now, about her parentage... *sighs*
The earliest versions of her story appear in Orphic Greek Mythology, which is completely different and complicated compared to your typical Vanilla Greek Mythology. So depending on the versions, her mother is Persephone, whereas her father is either Zeus or Hades (or both).
The most common version of her myth is that Zeus took the appearance of Hades and impregnated Persephone on the banks of the River Cocytus. Some people are arguing though, claiming that a) Hades was sometimes reffered to as Zeus of the Underworld due to the fact that people were too scared to say his name, and b) In Orphism Hades and Zeus are sometimes believed to be one and the same deity (I've told you that it’s complicated, guys!). What we know for sure though is that Persephone gave birth to her on the banks of the River Cocytus as well, while Hermes was acting like some sort of a bodyguard. One can hope that he got a raise after that...
There's also another version of her myth, though this one was transmitted orally rather than written. In this one Persephone remained pregnant with her after a midnight tryst with Hades on the Nysion Island (Ooo...).
Melinoe is described as being half dark and half pale (though this description might be metaphorical rather than literal, but at least Hel has a twin sister now), representing her dual nature, and is considered both a daughter of the Underworld and of Mount Olympus whoever her parents are.
It is believed that there's a strong connection between her and Hecate. Both preside over realms that are shrouded in mystery, and their domains often intersect in the world of spirits, night, and the unknown. Despite her eerie domain, Melinoe wasn’t inherently malevolent. She was a guardian of spirits, guiding them through the night. However, her association with nightmares and madness meant that she was often perceived with a mix of fear and reverence by the Ancient Greeks.
Melinoe’s primary role was to guide the spirits of the dead during the night. She would roam the earth, accompanied by a host of ghosts, ensuring they did not harm the living. It was believed that the reason why dogs bark at night is because they would see her and her ghosts and get scared. Additionally, she was the embodiment of nightmares, bringing forth visions and dreams that could both terrify and enlighten mortals. Her responsibilities also included maintaining the balance between the world of the living and the realm of the dead, ensuring that neither was disrupted by the other.
Zagreus
Ah, Zagreus... Where the hell should I begin?
Zagreus is firstly mentioned in Mycenaean Mythology, and it seems that he had a great importance thousands of years ago, but for some reason he lost it in time. In the earliest mention of Zagreus, he is paired with Gaia and called the highest god, though perhaps only in reference to the gods of the underworld. Aeschylus, however, links Zagreus with Hades, possibly as Hades' son, or as Hades himself.
In the most famous version of his myth, which appears in the Orphic Hymns, Zeus raped Persephone in the form of a snake/dragon when she was FUCKING FOURTEEN and hidden in a cave, due to the fact that her mother decided to keep her there so that no god would take advantage of her (Spoiler Alert: it didn't work.). Later, when Zagreus was born, Hera found out about him and threw him into Tartarus, where he was dismembered by the Titans. Athena, however, managed to find his heart and gave it to Zeus. Zeus then asked Semele to eat that heart, which she did and soon after that she got pregnant with Dionysus. This is why Zagreus is sometimes called The Orphic Dionysus, why he is associated with rebirth and reincarnation, and why in some versions of the birth of Dionysus it is Persephone the one who raised him.
There are also people who claim that Zagreus is in fact the son of Hades and Persephone that later got merged/syncretized with the Orphic Dionysus, who is the son of Zeus and Persephone.
And last but not least, in the later versions of his myth he is simply the son of Hades and Persephone, and the God of Orphic Mysteries. In this version he is generally depicted as a skilled hunter who hunts during nighttime and sometimes even eats his prey raw. Also, he and Dionysus share a lot of attributes in common, because yes.
Now, it should be ALSO pointed out the fact that in the Orphic Greek Mythology Hades, Zeus and Dionysus are sometimes believed to be one and the same deity. A small hint that many people use as an argument in order to prove the connection between these three gods, more specifically between Hades and Dionysus, is that during the time when Demeter was searching for Persephone she refused to drink wine even when it was offered to her. But that's an idea and a concept that would take me hours to unpack and explain, and I'm already tired.

Princess Andromeda, Annabeth and Season 2 Predictions
In honor of the season 2 teaser trailer drop, here is an obscenely long and convoluted post stemming from my excitement lol.
Necessary mythological context: Andromeda was Perseus’s wife in the Greek myths. The story goes that her mother boasted about how she was more beautiful than the sea nymphs and so Poseidon sent a monster to ravage their kingdom. Her parents chained her to a rock in the middle of the sea as an offering to the beast to save themselves. Perseus, on his way back from slaying Medusa, ran across her and killed the beast, saving Andromeda. Some more stuff happens but that’s irrelevant to my analysis so let’s just skip to the happily ever after part because they settle down, have a bunch of kids, and live out the rest of their days in peace.
Other than the fact this it is just quite insane to name your boat after the wife of Perseus, it’s also an indicator of Luke’s motivation: Annabeth.
Because, and reader I know you know where this is going, Annabeth is the Andromeda of the PJO story. It’s more explicit in the show (in which they literally have a Perseus who is on a quest to save his mother hold a recently slain Medusa’s head up to kill a monster that has been hunting her since childhood while she watches. Very wild of them, I’ve never stopped thinking about it), but the books aren’t subtle about it either lol.
And this is where the Andromeda parallel really starts getting complicated. Because Annabeth is obviously Percy’s Andromeda, but she’s also Luke’s.
Luke and Thalia find Annabeth at her most vulnerable: her mortal parents have essentially fed her to the wolves by letting her run away, knowing she’ll be hunted by monsters, all to save themselves. Luke and Thalia take her in, care for her, and protect her. If they hadn’t found her, Annabeth very likely would have died. They take her to camp, where Thalia dies, but Luke and Annabeth are safe and they get to live peacefully (for some time).
But, Annabeth still feels trapped in some way. She wants to get out of camp to really prove herself as a warrior and a daughter of Athena. In comes Percy, the second and truer (literally lol) Perseus. He “unchains” her from camp (and Luke) by taking her with him on his quest.
All the tlt stuff happens and Luke betrays them and runs off. Next time we see him he’s an evil frat boy on a yacht named the Princess Andromeda and we NEVER GET AN EXPLANATION FOR WHY THATS THE NAME. Did Luke name it himself? Did it come named Princess Andromeda and, if so, what was Luke’s reaction because I know that man did not need more reminders of Percy around him lmao.
The show already honed in on the Perseus-Andromeda parallels in season 1, so I just know they’re coming up with something crazy for season 2 now that Andromeda’s name has a reason to be brought up.
Definitely think Andromeda’s story is going to be told in some capacity, especially so that people who aren’t mythology nerds can figure out the parallel that they set up in season 1 more completely.
Maybe they’ll replace Agrius and Oreius with it because it could serve the same function. Luke told their story to criticize the gods, and Andromeda’s story can also be used in the same way. I think it’ll be even more interesting because Poseidon plays the villain in her myth.
#did this even make any sense lol#i feel so crazy rn lmao#naming the boat PRINCESS ANDROMEDA and then never speaking about it again has been my roman empire for years#im so excited guys#im going to be thinking about all the possibilities until the new season drops#pjotv#pjo tv show#pjo#percy jackon and the olympians#percy jackson and the olympians#percy jackson#annabeth chase#luke castellan#pjo season 2#the sea of monsters#walker scobell#leah sava jeffries#charlie bushnell#princess andromeda#perseus and andromeda#perseus

I’m super into Greek mythology and I do like Percy Jackson but I didn’t read that series until I was an adult alright I became an insufferable mythology nerd all on my own without Rick Riordan’s help thank you very much I’m tired of people asking if I liked Percy Jackson as a kid I didn’t read every book about ancient Egypt and Egyptian mythology in the school library three times and ask for mythology books for my birthday as a teenager because of fictional magic summer camps I did it because there’s something horribly loose in my brain that can’t be tightened by any device known to man or god

Mythology anon here, I already followed you bc I'm aroace too, I didnt know you liked mythology! You just got even cooler in my book, mon ami!
It does make sense that Aphrodite and Artemis despise each other, as what the represent as goddesses are polar opposites. Aphrodite is the goddess of sex and beauty, while Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and virginity.
But it's still interesting to see just how much they hate each other and each other's followers
Hey, what's not to like about mythology? Arguably I have a looooot I don't know, but I used to be a bit of a mythology nerd in my younger years, especially as a smaller kid, and then in the couple years where I studied literature.
But yeah, it's fascinating how intense things can get really quickly in greek mythology, and also the sheer devotion and association of followers with the gods they follow, it's extra interesting to think about polytheistic cultures in a 'western' world that's been largely overtaken by a majority of monotheism for so long 👀 So again, thanks for sharing, honestly I always like learning more on that topic
#mythology loving anon#anon#greek mythology#also thank you for the kind words <3#liking mythology is very cool in my book

what if. hera DID have children but they were born in a more athena-like way, and not how demigods are typically born
ALLOW ME TO ELABORATE
what if children of hera were born from a feeling or emotion or just idea so deep, that hera is able to transfer that energy into a human-like form?? OR what if she just like decided to make herself pregnant IDK LMAO
but i mean like what if she blessed/gave (???) lets say something like couples who want kids but cannot have them, or couples that lost their baby/mothers who had a miscarriage
im fully aware anybody who has a miscarriage still has a chance of giving birth to another baby, so this part kinda applies more towards couples that want kids but cant have them- but id say she looks for people who desperately want and are worthy to have kids, and kinda like (god i wish you guys could see my hand movements right now) gives them a child??? idk i mean she could just kinda like leave a kid on their front doorstep and just so happens to be a perfect mix of the couple (or person)?? something like that??
yea i know its such a weird concept and very loose but i think its a nice thought ! like the goddess of childbirth using her power to help those who want but cannot have kids
i think artemis would also have to play a role in this, like she and hera judge and evaluate whoever theyre gonna give a kid to so they know theyre not giving it to somebody who wont treat the kid right or like a couple that thinks having a kid will fix their relationship
AGAIN very very vague and probably doesnt align with greek mythology at all but like this is directed for the pjo fandom anyway so any greek mythology nerds out there pls dont come for me in my dms 😭
and now we enter the questioning period
"would they still be considered demigods?"
i think so yep!! cause yk they came directly from hera .. she created them .. kinda like athena babies !! theyd obviously stay in cabin two :)
"do the parents know their kid is a demigod?"
i mean like no demigod parents know that their kid is but i feel like hera would leave a little note with the kid making up a story about how she needs somebody to take care of the kid cause she cant or wtv but then shed actually sign it 'hera' (and probs add like a little heart or something or maybe theres like a mini peacock drawing on the card) but i think most parents would just kinda brush her name off i dont think they would really realize like 'ohmygod the queen of the heavens hath given me a child' yaknow
"what traits or powers would a child of hera have?"
ummm idk. im not thought daughter enough for that ngl, especially cause their nonexistent and this is literally just me making up a theory but i feel like she mostly has daughters (cause shes the goddess of women - but that doesnt answer the question at all), i think theyd be really sweet (even though hera is a jerk in the books), and i feel like theyd also be good at archery and have an interest in nature, that they get from artemis :)
oh also!! these kids are like rare. like big three rare- max three roll around every decade or so
lmk what u think !! ˊᵕˋ
#did i cook#no but seriously i need to know what people think abt this#yell at me for forgetting some important lore if u need to !!#i literally just want to talk abt this with someone#percy jackson#heroes of olympus#hera#pjo headcanon#bells' diary ˚୨୧⋆。

This is my precious horse girl Blair. I am far from done with oc posting I love my little guys.
Info about Blair!
General Description:
Blair is on the shorter side and wears heels to compensate. She has thick light brown hair that is always curled to princess-like perfection. She has small facial features and usually wears makeup to complement her appearance. Despite living in the United States for years, she still has a Bulgarian accent.
Blair is usually a quiet individual. She minds her own business. Blair isn’t very confrontational, but when pushed into a corner she will lash out. She doesn’t really like any of the preps, finding them dramatic and spoiled. Blair likes to keep herself busy and to show off with her accomplishments when given the opportunity. When she is with close company, Blair is surprisingly outspoken and witty.
Interests and whatnot:
Blair is a very accomplished equestrian. She has been riding since she was very young, and was taught under successful trainers with phenomenal horses. Blair competes in show jumping and the hunter ring. She has an entire wall dedicated to her ribbons. Blair is always open to bragging about her success as a rider.
At heart Blair is also a huge theatre kid. She rushes to audition for her favorite role in school plays and puts all her effort into acting the part. Blair loves the spotlight and loves to show off her acting skills. She has also done a few musicals. Blair enjoys the close bind the theatre department shares. She specifically has her father donate to the arts department to help keep it going.
Blair enjoys Greek Mythology. Her favorite piece of Greek literature is the Odyssey. When she isn’t doing extracurriculars or homework, she’s in the library reading up on any translated piece she can find. Blair has also been to museums that have Ancient Greek artifacts on display.
Reputation:
The jocks like to have Blair around. Thanks to her parents forcing her to participate in sports, she has a good standing in the clique. She plays her part on the cheer team as a flyer and pulls her weight in volleyball. She’s good friends with Damon West and Mandy Wiles.
The greasers do not like her. While Blair isn’t one to go out of her way to harass them, she’s guilty by association. This isn’t good for Blair. Unfortunately, she’s developed a serious crush on Johnny Vincent. Things can really only go downhill from there I guess
The preps are friendly to Blair. She’s included in their circle very frequently. Although after her break up with Bif Taylor things are slightly awkward. Blair herself likes none of the preps, but she’s good at being fake. In her opinion, she thinks their parents should force them to work more to prove themselves like hers do. She’s rich, not necessarily spoiled.
Blair thinks the bullies are nuisances. She gets along with Trent alright, but the others not so much. She thinks bullying others is a waste of time and that maybe if they put all that effort into learning and hard work they’d be less miserable on the inside.
Blair is alright with the nerds. They do pitch in to help the theatre department a lot with sets and lights. Blair appreciates their dedication to academics. She is friends with Cornelius.
Quotes:
“You! Take this and go buy me some cherry coke.”
“Do you think I care if you take my money? A hundred dollars is pocket change to me.”
“Performance arts are an important part of human history and date back to ancient times!”
“I have practice, sorry.”
“I have to go to the barn after school. I can’t come. I am sorry.”
“I have to go help Juri with his English tutoring. I’ll see you later.”
“That Johnny guy, he’s kind of handsome..”
“The one thing I hate about these losers is that they’ve never worked. They get everything handed to them. I hate it! Why can’t my parents be like that?”
“Hey! Come to the auditorium Saturday nigh to see the school play! Admission is ten dollars!”
“I think I should rename my horse Elmer since he wants to be glue so bad.”
“Why should we waste time organizing a play of The Outsiders when we have a live performance on campus 24/7?”
“I’m so tired. I wish my parents would let me drop at least one sport.”

Hello, it's me, the Greek god gal! Thank for so much for answering ya'll!
Noe for the correct answer, both Pete and Richie are correct. Poseiden was the god with the most number of kids, but due to the fact that his brother, Zeus, is well known for being the most horniness guy, people believed that he had the most kids!
Now you know, cya later!
-🌙 anon
Richie: *snickering* yeah! so basically Zeus is just like ruthie
Ruth: *blushing, elbows him* RICHIE!
Richie: OW, why you always gotta hurt me!
Pete: *sighs, lopsided smile at his silly friends* Hey again, great to hear from you, moony. May I call you that? Thanks for the question, it was nice to get my brain back in greek mythology. It's always been super interesting to me.
Steph: *smiles fondly at Pete* Aww really? You're a greek myth nerd, Spankoffski?
Pete: *blushing, fidgets his bowtie* Well, y-yeah! Greek myths are cool, y'know?
Max: huh, this is actually kinda interestin...they sound like some sick dudes, wait til I tell the guys about this!
Richie: *whispering to Pete* wait until he finds out that poseidon hit it and quit it with a horse
Max: *eyes wide, whips around* WHAT DID YOU SAY?

I HAVE RAMBLINGS ABOUT TYT
Nico and Apollo def have geek out sessions over greek mythology like they are NERDS and Apollo def grew up having snippets of the Iliad and Odyssey read to him so the moment Nico showed even the slightest of interest in Greek mythology as a kid, best believe Apollo used that to warm up to him 😭🙏
ALSO I can just picture little Apollo curled up next to Leto as she read him all these different poems (I'd like to think she read to him in Greek and while Apollo wasn't completely fluent in Greek, he def understood it very well but then he lost it 😞)
Also, Leto definitely called Apollo sunshine, and that's why he calls his own kids that. Every time Apollo would ask why he was named Apollo, Leto would scoop him up and say it was bc he was the light of her life, and Apollo is the god of light, so ofc she named her pride and joy after the god of light
Anyways whatever u do don't think about sixteen year old Apollo drunk (and probably high) out of his mind, curled up in a hotel room that he hardly spent any time in wishing he could've spent more time with his mother before his father whisked him away and into the spotlight :(
UGH AND DON'T THINK ABOUT APOLLO READING THE ILIAD TO HIMSELF WHENEVER HE MISSES LETO
clearly I have very strong feelings towards the relationship Apollo has with his mother and the fact that he should've had more time with her but bc he was in the spotlight all the time as a kid he didn't get to :(
Wait, oh my god, did Apollo go to his own mother's funeral?? Bc like Will was in middle school when she died, right?? So would have he trusted Will enough to be alone in the house for a few days, or did he just not go?? And how many times did Apollo look at his sixteen year old son and realize that the neglect Zeus put him through (ignoring Apollo's very clear addiction in favor of making him famous ofc) was definitely abuse. HOW MANY TIMES DID APOLLO HAVE TO REALIZE THAT HE GREW UP TOO FAST EVERY TIME HE LOOKED AT WILL??? 😭😭😭
ALSO ALSO IDK IF IT WAS INTENTIONAL BUT HAVING APOLLO, THE PROTECTOR OF YOUNG BOYS, BE THE ONE TO RESCUE NICO FROM AN ABUSIVE SITUATION AND GAVE HIM THE RESOURCES HE NEEDED TO HEAL???? AMAZING
I think Kayla def tried to teach everyone that Will was friends with archery. Just bc archery is severely underrated 😞
(Only Piper managed to actually hit the target, and Jason somehow sliced his hand open??? He has a very faint scar now, and if someone asks about it while he's with Leo, then Leo will come up with the most ridiculous stories instead of telling them the truth 😭)
Also, I think you've mentioned it before, but did either Darren or Kayla try to teach him archery? Idk but the mental image is very funny and it probably took him a plethora of tries to hit the target and Kayla was probably so proud
ANYWAYS IM SO SORRY THIS IS SO LONG IM DOING THIS INSTEAD OF WRITING MY CREATIVE WRITING ASSIGNMENT (I love that class but also UGHHHHH)
HAVE A GOOD DAY 🫶
FIRST OF ALL THIS JUST MAKES ME SO HAPPY TO SEE LIKE AHHSDFHLSDFJ OMG TYT RAMBLES
the whole part about apollo and leto... YES YES YESLKJDSFASDF AHHH apollo was 100% raised on greek mythology and he does have various copies of the iliad and the odyssey and other myths, an old worn-down version from his mom which had been passed down to him in her will, and a bunch of fancy pretty ones bc if he ever sees a pretty copy of the iliad or the odyssey he WILL buy it.
i think that he did go through a phase where like,,, he was just completely uninterested in that sort of stuff, considered it childhood and whatever. but i think that eventually, esp when taking in will, he went through what i'll call the "dumb and poetic try-hard intellectual" phase where he actually did read through the whole thing, read through various translations, annotated some copies, attempted to learn greek (modern greek, not ancient greek lmao), and just in general getting in touch with his heritage bc he realizes, watching will who's so small and resembles him so much, that those memories of him and his mom were actually some of his happiest moments of childhood, not annoying ones. and so he does try to replicate that, despite having not left his family on the best of terms *cough* really bad onesSLKJDF
and as someone who had a parent speak to them in their language, knew how to understand that language, but refused to learn it themselves bc it was boring, there's gonna be such an intense regret there from apollo, thinking that he should've taken the opportunity to learn when he could. he definitely would still understand bits and pieces, maybe a few quotes that were his or his mom's favorites, but it's just a lot harder to learn a language once you've grown up ://
as for the funeral, he did not go, because he still wasn't on speaking terms with his father, and well,,, yeah. he didn't want to cause a scene, also didn't want to tell will much about it, but i do think leto left some things to apollo in her will that apollo had to fight pretty hard to actually get sent to him
and GOD the emotions of apollo watchign will grow up... AHSDFJ ILL NEVER GET OVER IT like its hard to accept but he eventually does recognize it. and it's painful but it also feels good to know that that'll never happen. to watch his son at 16 spend his afternoon doing homework, and at 17 having a healthy relationship with his best friend, and at 18 applying to colleges... it definitely makes apollo proud, but it also breaks his heart a bit. because he couldn't imagine ever forcing the childhood that he had on his son, and he has to admit that his father hadn't felt the same sense of protection or care, and that even though his mom did, she wasn't in a position to do anything that would truly help :/
ALSO ALSO IDK IF IT WAS INTENTIONAL BUT HAVING APOLLO, THE PROTECTOR OF YOUNG BOYS, BE THE ONE TO RESCUE NICO FROM AN ABUSIVE SITUATION AND GAVE HIM THE RESOURCES HE NEEDED TO HEAL???? AMAZING
KSDJFLKASJDFSD PARALLELS AHHSDHFHDSFJ no bc that actually just makes me so happyyyyy like yes apollo is a good father yes he always has been and yes he always will be!!!! to literally anyone who needs it. i love him so much. can you believe when i was first outlining this fic i was like "hm, yeah, he plays an important role, but like i'll make sure not to make him a major character or anything"
now we're here. apollo is probably like. the third most major character after nico and will. in greatest of luxuries, at least.
kayla absoluTELY tried to train everyone in archery, and apollo's trying to avoid it bc he's trying not to think back to 2002 when darren tried to teach him archery, and kayla has the exact same instruction style bc darren had taught her, and hes actually better than will and will's friends bc he's learned before, but he fails on purpose bc the memories are too painful because THEY WERE HAPPY-
sorry pollen is possessing me! it will never leave
ANYWAYS IM SO SORRY THIS IS SO LONG IM DOING THIS INSTEAD OF WRITING MY CREATIVE WRITING ASSIGNMENT (I love that class but also UGHHHHH)
this is SO real bc i am responding to this to avoid doing my lit essaysdlkjf

WIP Ask Game
Oh Mads. You and your love for Museum Muse will never cease to delight me. (And there is no such thing as too late, I promise.)
You clarified in DM's that you were curious about how their first DM goes. I haven't gotten there yet, so I don't exactly know. 😅 I just know the circumstances.
So, instead, I'll offer you this: the stories behind their usernames and some of the forums they are frequent in. (Usernames fuckin' suck to come up with, okay? Especially because John and Daisy are both alive at the advent of the internet.)
Under the cut because I...I did world building again. 😅 Sorry not sorry.
Divider Courtesy of @thecutestgrotto
John's username: TinkerKelpie93
In my canon, kiddo John was the kid that took everything apart and put it back together - just to see how it worked. The radio, the clock, the lawn mower, you name it, he could fix it (most likely). Kid was building inventions in the garage where his father worked with scrap parts cast aside from the vehicles repaired.
His granda (his Da's dad) encouraged him up until his death when John was in his early teens. He told stories to wee John about his ancestors, the Scottish Travellers (from my research, they're similar to/adjacent to Romani populations in Scotland- if a Scot wants to correct my history, please do! I want to do this right. 💚) who are/were called "Tinkers" (usually in a negative connotation - literally meaning "itinerant tinsmith").
So Tinker is a bit of a historical nod to his family history and his tendency to "tinker" with things when he's thinking (hello neurodivergency, it's good to see you. 😅)
His love for Scottish Mythology (and the Kelpie part of his name) is courtesy of his Gran (Mum's Mom). She was a school teacher, and loved teaching the mythos of the region. They had a place on the edge of a small loch, and she would always warn him away from the water with a reminder of the stories about the kelpies trying to drown children. As he grew into his artistic practice, he did this detailed Kelpie artwork to give her for the holidays featuring her house, the swing by the loch and the landscape with the fearful mythological creature in the center of the lake that still hangs over her mantle. This John loves oil pastels and charcoal (it's the tactile part), but will make do with pencils when he's in country.
And 93 because, well, he was born April [redacted], 1993. This man's an Aries, y'all. (Bite me on the date. I have my timeline to back me up.)
Divider Courtesy of @thecutestgrotto
Daisy's username: IrisOfTheLake
Daisy's a symbology and history nerd. (Her love for mythology and art is how she ended up getting a degree specializing in the Still Life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age by female artists, but that's another story. She almost studied Arthurian Legends instead, but decided art history and preservation were her true academic love.)
Her aunt has a prolific collection of irises - she's incredibly active in the British Iris Society and Daisy spent many many seasons after school helping her dig and divide them to share with the neighbors and the other members. She even helped her aunt with cross-pollinating and some breeding attempts (though her aunt didn't progress very far down that road for reasons).
Iris is also the Greek Goddess of messages, often said to arrive on rainbows. Iris flowers hold a number of meanings in the floral language, including hope and wisdom. (Can you see where I'm going with this? I hope so.)
"OfTheLake" directly refers to the legends of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake. (I told y'all, she was a nerd about this shit.) Y'know, the one that gives the sword Excalibur to Arthur and disposes of Merlin? That Lady of the Lake. Badass bitch if I ever heard of one, who holds a lot of wisdom and knowledge to help others achieve their goals.
Why IrisOfTheLake? It sounded good and smashed two of her early fascinations and hobbies together. 😊 (And the irony of our girl having not one but two flower nicknames makes me giggle.)
Divider Courtesy of @thecutestgrotto
Both John and Daisy recognize each other from lurking and posting in a number of forums together, including art history and BDSM. John regularly shares his more refined drawings (usually done on leave or during long waiting periods), and Daisy is regularly active in the floral symbiology threads, talking about the language of flowers and meaning and bullshit like that. (I just realized I have to write all this, fuck me.)
Anyway, they bond over some dipshit in the BDSM forum espousing some gender essentialism bullshit - men are doms, women are subs, blah blah blah. Daisy has an eloquent take on it, John just wants to thrash them for being so black and white and says as much.
Who reaches out first? To be seen. (I have to leave you some mystery lol.)

MK, after being blessed with all of the many, and funny, mythos references thanks to OSP:
"Just don't pull an Actaeon and we'll be good."
"I thought I told you to take the sky back, why do I still have it?" (Talking about some object he got asked to hold onto but was never actually retrieved despite MK asking them to finally retrieve it)
*Playing DND* "I smack him in the head with my stick thing."
"I SWEAR TO TARTARUS AND BACK-"
"I blame Zeus."
"Did Loki put you up to this?"
I def hc MK in both canon and au being a big mythology nerd in general, not just for SWK.
He'd be the kid running around the library with a bunch of mythology books too mature for him to check out without an adult (Tang said no cus they'd both get in trouble with Pigsy). Has different phases of interest throughout his childhood - the parents probably can gauge how old MK is in some photos based on what mythology he was currently obsessed with.
SWK, pointing to a photo in an album: "Was MK seven or eight in this one?" Tang: "Just turned seven. See the little wooden sword on his belt?" Mac: "Ah. The King Arthur phase. He had a cake shaped like a rock that year." Pigsy: "Easiest to design really. He just wanted a fake sword coming out the top." Sandy: "Also the year he figured out how to turn himself into a squirrel cus of the disney movie." SWK: "He cried so much for that girl squirrel." MK, overhearing and getting emotional: "She didn't understand! She was in love but couldn't understand why Wart couldn't be with her! It was heartbreaking!"
I'm projecting because I was that kid who knew all the greek gods names, and by proxy all the planets and their moons.
MK would make obscure mythology jokes that no one gets except Mac (theatre and mythology nerd intertwine often), and a certain demon.
MK, very tired after eating a bunch of mooncakes: "Feeling like I ate the wrong kinda lotus rn." Everyone else in the room: ??? Red Son, suddenly starts laughing: "Oh because of the lotus-eaters! Sorry, it took me a moment. Very clever noodle-boy." MK: ( ♥ ͜ʖ ♥)
But yeah MK is 100% still a Monkey King nerd, but he also nerds about other mythological heroes. Has all the OSP mythos videos saved into his memory. Frequently blames his magic/divine problems on completely unrelated gods aka "Damn you Zeus!"

Do you have any Headcanon for bubba x crafycorn? I have PLENTY
OOOOOOOOOHHHH YESSSS!!!
MORE UNDERRATED SHIPS!!! You've got taste fam, you've got taste.
💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍
Can we all agree this ship deserves to be called Sketchbook? PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. P L E A S E.
We all thought of it. Nerd x art kid. WE ALL DID.
Honestly, the more you think about it, Bubba and Crafty would pretty much be always hanging out whenever there's anything involving active games. Although they would (kind of rarely) participate, Bubba has never been one to like sports. And Crafty is way too ashamed of messing up in front of the group. So you could think of them as some sort of backing each other up type of way, not like Kickin and Hoppy would, but the feeling is there.
THEIR DATE WOULD BE DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS-
Bubba, although he is great with books, is pretty bad at anything involving drawing. He had never personally done it before, not even as a child, since he had never seen the point of putting so much effort on a piece of paper that would come and go. BUT. IF HE WERE TO BE THE ONE WHO HAD A CRUSH ON CRAFTYCORN FIRST- WELL, MY MAN GOT PRIORITIES.
They would help tutor each other ALL THE TIME. As in like- Crafty being Bubba's art teacher and Bubba being Crafty's history/math/science/etc teacher!
(BIGGER BODIES HEADCANON. NOT KIDS HERE. NUH UH.) You'll remember when in the game's cutouts Pickypiggy mentioned eating both Bubba and later on Craftycorn, right? And how in one of the cutouts Crafty is literally out for blood? WELL FOR THE SAKE OF THIS HEADCANON, IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW.
These two gotta be loving Greek mythology. As a person who loves it, it's the PERFECT combination between art and having a LOT of memory.
They listen to music together, and ironically, Bubba remembers the whole lyrics of her fav.
You'll know Crafty would, in any headcanon of ANY ship, draw her crush. The same would go for Bubba. BUT HERE'S THE TWIST. BUBBA, MY MAN, GOT A WHOLE PLAN BOARD IN HIS ROOM TO FIND OUT HOW TO TREAT HIS GAL. STICKY NOTES AND EVERYTHING.
Live laugh love Craftycorn girl failure.
Ngl, I don't see Craftycorn as much of a shy type of person as everyone treats her to be. She's low in speech, yes, but I'd imagine she'd be able to hang around everyone just as fine. But due to her soft spoken voice, people would always treat her like some sort of shy kid, which sometimes embarrasses her. But Bubba? On the contrary, he would treat her with equal respect and view point as the rest of the group, which eases her a lot.
Musicals? They love it. Documentareis? They love it. Science fiction? They LOVE it.
I'd imagine them having very subtle PDA, nothing too obvious, maybe holding (hands???) but the intention is there.
YALL WANNA HEAR AN AWSOME SCENERIO? HERE'S ONE FOR YOU: TODAY IS CRAFTYCORN'S BIRTHDAY AND DOES ALL THE DECORATIONS HERSELF, THE WHOLE CAKE, EVERYTHING. But EVERYONE forgot so that makes her sad- BUT. B U T. BUBBA IS THE ONLY ONE THAT REMEMEBR SO THEN WE GET WHOLESOME SHIT AND ARGHTRDJKBFGUSAYDTFUSGDFJKASGDGSBDJHDGFBJKSAGDFBAWYETFRAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH...... ahem. My apologies.
💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍🎨📘📖💙🤍
I'm personally more of a Craftycorn x Bobby Bearhug shipper BUT THIS IS VERY GOOD TOO- I LOVE THESE KIND OF SHIPS
WHY ARE THEY SO UNDERRATED.
THEY SHOULDN'T BE UNDERRATED.

After the now infamous deleted GRRM blogpost it felt like a good time to bring up this rant that's been sitting in the back of my drafts for a while now. This is a long one so buckle in.
The adaptation discourse will be so much easier when the fact that an “adaptation” and “inspired by” are accepted as different things. Many of the things being argued as adaptations really end up fitting under “inspired by/based on” more than “adaptation.” The basis of the breakdown lying in “are you adapting for change in medium or are you adopting characters and worlds with new narratives and personalities?” Too often these terms are used interchangeably or amalgamated together.
Because an adaption from text to film should boil down to; okay we may not be able to show this grand explosion or wild fight so we will make it as similar in tone as possible with the right tension and have a choreographer work around our physical limitations. For example, if you tried to make a live action Naruto (which I vehemently condemn for the record) almost every single fight has to be changed because outside of overusing CGI you could simply never display the key moments of those battles. So while the resounding retort of, "aN aDapTatiOn iS nEveR gOinG tO bE a 1:1" is obvious, but that phrase is commonly being used as a blanket response to any and all criticism regardless of how valid the point is.
An inspired by on the contrary CAN deviate from the canon in ways that an adaption should not. Inspired by is categorically like what Disney did with 90s animated movies, they were inspired by myths, folktales and legends but changed to make palatable for young audiences and of course there’s subtextual references (Scar holding the skull as in Hamlet) through out. You would never call them adaptions however. A production inspired by Shakespeare (Lion King inspired by Hamlet) and an adaptation (Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet) are inherently different because of this fundamental distinction. Because the adaptation of Romeo & Juliet kept faithfully to not only the themes in a modern setting but Luhrmann being a madman left the play's dialogue unchanged, only the setting and props suited to the new format. Which is the case in point. THAT was an adaptation.
I always come back to it but with Avatar the Last Airbender adaptations are really categorically more suited for the label of “inspired by” because an adaptation doesn’t mean “okay let’s jam 3 separate story lines into one episode” like absolutely NO. If you don’t “have the time” to explore an arc fully then YOU NEED MORE EPISODES. Sokka not wearing Kyoshi makeup and therefore changing the entire dynamic and the entire point of that plot is NOT an adaption, it was something both physically and metaphysically that could and should have happened. Changing a character and their relationships is not adaption, it’s adoption, and listen it’s okay to want to do that. It’s the foundation of fan fiction. And it’s also okay to say, I like the stories as they’re presented because I don’t have a relationship/love for the source. However, the people who do have every right to take issue with the changes, even those you enjoyed.
Whereas the inspired by category gets a lot more leniency with the plot and characters. To go back to the Disney animated films of the 90s, Hercules is one of the cases referenced most often. Of course you can’t make a Greek mythological adaption for children with today’s ratings and restrictions - that was what made them stories to inspire not adapt. It’s why what Rick Riordan did was a great effort and worked to make complex mythology accessible to kids. It’s why tumblr nerds often laugh about the portrayal of Zeus being a faithful and loving husband and Hera being the loving mother of Hercules. In that case of course you have to change those dynamics and principles for the intended audience. Or sometimes inspired by requires you to introduce a different setting and protagonist inspired by a source. Detective Pikachu for example isn’t an Ash Ketchum led live action it’s something completely separate from that universe while following most of the main principles. Similar to the “based on” film/television that might also keep some foundational material but present a new plot or different tone. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is a fantastic example of this where the protagonist and antagonists are all familiar and they’re in Gotham City as fans would expect but their stories and relationships might not have been what the audience expected.
All that to be said, when a writer themselves is entering the ring to defend their work from the "adaptation" being put forth with their name on it - it is completely justifiable. GRRM isn't new to television or film, he's been doing this for decades and has worked on projects before, all of which had budgets and production teams to be considered. The other blanket response of "well THE BUDGET" is really fallible because we've seen low budget films pull off incredible results on screen. The reoccurring issue here and in the television media landscape really all doubles back to executives being the downfall. You have calculating business wads who wouldn’t know creativity if it bit them in the ass making creative choices for shows. Most of them being qualified only in business and not in media or entertainment by any other way. This is not exclusive to television we can see cases of this happening in music as well (see Sabrina Carpenters label not wanting to release “Espresso” the arguable song of the summer) when these people are more often than not dead wrong.
GRRM's main focus in the blog post was around Maelor's exclusion which was purported to be a budget/casting issue. To me this is a very fallible excuse. Mainly because, not wanting to cast another toddler when you already aged down the other children is an easy one. A. You could have had used an infant (also would have added more emotional tension in B&C if Haelena was alone holding the baby) because it's pretty easy to interchange infant actors. B. use a doll. I mean this is like elementary but seriously a swaddled baby doll and some sound fx could have been easily done. Still works for later scenes if you have the doll in a crib "sleeping" and that's me accepting a relatively lazy inclusion of Maelor. Considering there's no way to introduce him now after the explicit details of Aegon's dick being destroyed. Some of these changes or mashups of plot points are more than just budgetary issues they’re logic and continuity based issues.
My point being, the very purpose of an adaptation is to take the source material and doing what you can to present the best version of this story to the audience with the tools you are given. There are of course ways this won't mean every single line of dialogue or action is going to be followed to a t. However, if you were going to adapt a recipe let's say, to make it a vegetarian dish - you can swap out the meat for another source of protein or veggies and make the sauce/foundation of the recipe exactly as it's called for but adapt it to your palette or preference. Inspired by is when white people make shit like “lasagna tacos” where you’re like well that’s … nice I guess? But definitely not authentic. Or just ask an Italian chef if you put heavy cream in your Carbonara and watch them start foaming at the mouth.
So while I understand not everyone may agree with GRRM about his response - he is completely justified in doing so, as is anyone else critical of this adaptation. Because it barely adheres to what an adaptation is supposed to be. Some of you may not like that either but this production should have been labeled as "inspired by" or “from the world of” for a lot of reasons considering the liberties they took and omissions they executed. This goes far beyond the scope of this case but I truly applaud George for making a stand and calling out the failures of this production. If I had one more person try to tell me to basically accept shitty adaptations for the sake of them being adaptations I was going to start screaming at the sky. If you're one of the people that likes the changes to HoTD or ATLA or Witcher then god bless I'm happy you have that but the suggestion that fans of the source material are supposed to shut up and accept them is asinine. Discounting the majority of a fanbase is grossly disrespectful and dismissing their criticisms is truly unjustifiable. When an author has to throw their hat in the ring to explain this it's time to look at the bigger picture. He nailed it in a previous blog post:
it does not seem to matter whether the source material was written by Stan Lee, Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Ursula K. Le Guin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mark Twain, Raymond Chandler, Jane Austen, or… well, anyone. No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and “improve” on it. “The book is the book, the film is the film,” they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound. Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though. Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse. (x)
Not to sound like a Boomer but making a story your own is not an adaptation. It just isn't. If you aren't clever or creative enough (*cough* Ryan C*ndal *cough*) to make an original work I personally do not see any validity in taking someone else's work and implementing your own artistic choices that fundamentally contradict the source material. Unless you want to call it something else. I have no problem with taking a concept and reinventing the story ie: Kurt Sutter basing Sons of Anarchy loosely on Hamlet or Diablo Cody's Lisa Frankenstein. I actually rather enjoy re-imagined stories whether they be parodies or more creative interpretations. Those are all well and good. Not to be mischaracterized as adaptations tho.
"Adaptations" and "inspired by" works can and should coexist but there needs to be a clear distinction to the production teams and audiences respectively.
While some people have had negative responses to George's post, on the website flooded with creators whether they make art or write, I find it rather a suspiring reaction. It's an odd position to take even if the justification is that he sold the material - how many of you wouldn't take that opportunity? Who wouldn't want a major media corporation to offer to adapt your work. Shit, I would sell my work for pennies on the dollar to see a television show produced from it. That being said, I would be devastated beyond belief if the changes that I never accepted or approved were implemented and put out there under the name of my work. So whether it be from the point of view as a fan or an author I simply cannot subscribe to the notion that disappointing adaptations are in and of themselves a compliment undeserving of criticism. Nor can I accept some of the television productions being marketed as "adaptation" when they're categorically "inspired by" in nature. If that distinction was acknowledged I could at least justify some of the changes we’ve seen and dismiss book purists as well, but as the show is purported to be an adaptation I cannot see this as a success. It fails in ways an adaptation would not, for reasons that frankly have more holes in them than Swiss cheese. George deserves better and the fans deserve better.
#george rr martin#GRRM#book adaptation#media#house of the dragon#game of thrones#television#hotd critical#fandom critical#writers absolutely deserve a voice in any adaptation of their work unless they explicitly said otherwise
