Nothing says summer like melon🍈🍉

Here’s my melon patch that’s 10x10ft. It mostly consists of watermelon but I do have a few cantaloupe growing as well (the lily pad-shaped leaves). The watermelon I have growing are regular watermelon (red), organic sugar baby watermelon (personal-sized/red), orange watermelon, and yellow golden honey watermelon. I only have about 5 regular cantaloupe growing but it’s common to have different color watermelon where I’m located.

Personally I’ve never grown watermelon but my father’s grandfather grew watermelons on a farm and my dad also grew personal sized watermelon years ago when I was really little but I’ve never done them before (along with the cantaloupe, but I’m super excited anyways).

As you can see everything looks amazing. These were directly sown into the ground around late March to late April. We planted the red and orange watermelon in late March but I couldn’t find yellow watermelon seeds until about mid-late April. The bigger plants are the orange and red watermelons and the cantaloupe is catching up but the yellow watermelon will be our last harvest (but that’s ok because I’ve got a long growing season). This patch gets mostly direct sun but does get shaded at about 6pm and I water twice a day due to how densely everything was planted. Because I’ve never done melons (watermelons specifically), I think I got a little overenthusiastic and over planted so to keep everything nice and healthy, I’ve been watering once in the morning and once in the evening.

While there aren’t any flowers yet, I’m expecting them very soon so stay tuned for an update in a few weeks.

My holidays away with my parents are finished and I am back home. I did lots of exploring, got to an amazing medieval festival and a very long day in the car we finally got back home. My first day back was busier than I had planned, as we had to clean up and fix some stuff, because while qe were away it rained so much our garage flooded. Thankfully my brother got the water out before we got back, but there were more things to do, and thankfully we did everything today. I have a lot of work to do in my garden too, but that is a weekend activity as tomorrow I have work in the morning, and then I'll be spending a couple of days at a friend's place. I am also almeno done with my reread of the fellowship of the ring, which I'd like to finish in the next couple of days. I haven't decided yet if my next read is going to be the two towers or if I want to break up the reread with something short.

So, btw, little factoid about me. I’ve always really loved afternoon tea. I love the whole experience, it’s one of my favourite small joys in life. (I might even love afternoon tea more than my morning lattes, which is so wild of me to say guys. I JUST FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS OK, THE LITTLE CAKES, THE MINI SANDWICHES, IM OBSESSED) PLUS as I’ve said over and over, i really love Bridgeton. So I’m just currently creating some visuals for myself. 02.09.24

A Photographic Journey into the Sarah P. Duke Gardens and Duke Chapel (Durham, NC ¬ 22/08/24)

This week, I'm on vacation. And I'll do whatever I damn well please.

So I sauntered into the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

I was on a walking journey to get to Duke Chapel, at Duke University.

And I was just OVERCOME by the greenstone beauty of this garden.

Let me tell ya Duke students, you're lucky to study here. Study well.

Overheated, these gardens became my maze-like prison until...

I reached Duke campus, and the buildings began to look like castles.

And there she was, Duke Chapel. I went inside and...

Oh, oh my. The resplendence... I've been in many chapels.

This one was my very favorite chapel so far, so expansive.

I can't help but feel changed after a two hour garden excursion.

This was a journey worth going on, I would go again, and again.

Don't judge me. I'm on vacation.

Today I managed to finish the first draft of my history paper. I was not expecting to finish so soon, but I am very happy about it. Tomorrow I will do some heavier editing to make sure it's okay and then I think I'll just reread it a few times before sending it to the professor. I am very grateful to my friend for taking a bit of time in her day to read it and pointing out what I can improve. Since I did all this work in the morning I took the afternoon off and spent about 3 hours in my veggie garden. I am thinking of making a post with some notes and thoughts from my first experience at keeping a vegetable garden by myself. I cleaned out most of the weeds, got rid of the behated snails that have been thriving thanks to the constant rain of this season, and I harvested some herbs I want to dry to make herbal teas. It was a lot of work, and mosquitos really had a feast on my, but I am really happy about how the day went. Gardening is one of those activities that just makes my brain shut up, so it felt quite peaceful. I cannot wait for exam season to actually be over so that I can spend more time working there (if the weather lets me of course, since in the past months there has been so much rain).
