Tell me about a time you had with one of your irl friends.

Doesn’t have to be a super close friend, just some buddy you like (or don’t like, if you wanna drop some drama *shrugs* idm either way)

So there's a mini saga actually.

I was... I think 17/18, senior year of high school. It was just post covid, we were all still kinda lonely and I didn't have many irl friends at all. I'm hanging out with one of my classmates at a youth event at this church, neither of us go there but its the main Young People Gathering Place sorta. We get talking in a corner about idk stuff. She says her guilty pleasure is Webtoons like Llre Olympus. Somehow my idiot teen self decides its then safe to share that I like fanfiction. Not what types, not what sites, idek if I said reading or writing, but still. She wasn't too freaked out once I assured her I stayed away from smut, and that was that. I forgot about it.

The next year, we as alumni go to the show our co-op put on, and we're sitting there in the front row, and I say something about writing I think. She apparently remembered that I liked fanfic and mentioned she had been LOOKING FOR ME and I bluescreened because wtf this is a Pure Woman and I am a Sinful Thing (/s/hj/lh) and how the fuck would she know me anyway? She says something about my writing style, which she and anyone but Skullkitten and like 2 irl friends have never seen, and the topic is dropped by some blessing. I still don't know how to unpack it.

And finally in June we meet up for Starbucks, I talk about how I've been writing a ton, and she goes "oh fanfiction? Don't you write that?" And I basically choke on my mocha and have to force down my nervous giggles like "nooooo oof def not, i mean like totally respectable original writing OF COURSE" and then dive into my chaotic novel plans and get the conversation back into safe waters.

To this day I still have no idea why I ever admitted such a thing, why she remembers it or brings it up, and what the fuck to do with the offhand comment that she looked for me. Like.

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.
