Within fashion marketing we devolved into the impact that different trends have had in different communities, our assignment was to design a poster and shop look backed off of a trend of our choosing. This trend was a device to explain the trickle up and trickle down theory within fashion.
Within fashion trickle-down theory involves trends starting with luxury designers and spreading to the mainstream, contrastingly the trickle-up theory sees trends originating from street style and influencing high fashion.
Patches have been a key element in emo culture, reflecting its roots in punk’s DIY ethos and its evolution as a genre. The use of patches in emo began in the 1980s when the genre emerged from the hardcore punk scene, where bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace emphasized self-expression and emotional vulnerability. Patches, often handmade, were used to show someone’s favourite bands through band logos, symbols, lyrics and personal messages.
During the 1990s, as emo matured with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbreaker, patches became more common in the scene having band and other shops start producing themselves. Fans would sew them onto jackets, bags, and miscellaneous clothes to personalize their style and show a deep emotional connection to the music. The patches often depicted band logos or minimalist artwork, making them a symbol of individuality.
In the early 2000s, emo went mainstream with bands like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, leading to a commercialization of the fashion. Despite this, patches remained a way for fans to distinguish themselves, especially those connected to the underground scene. DIY patches, often sold or traded at shows, remained a symbol of authenticity.
By the 2010s, with the rise of the “emo revival” and platforms like Etsy, patches saw a resurgence in the DIY spirit. Fans and independent creators began making custom patches, often featuring emotional lyrics or personal designs, reflecting the genre’s introspective nature. Today, patches continue to symbolize emo’s core values of self-expression, emotional vulnerability, and a connection to the music.

My Top 5 emo bands!
Against all odds, emo is still a thing, in a kind of nostalgic way, but a thing nonetheless! Let's get a thing straight first: emo is not the same as pop punk. While bands like All Time Low and Yellowcard fall into the spectrum, others like Blink-182 do not (unless we count their 2003 self-titled album, especially Here's Your Letter which even has traces of post hardcore in it). Anyway, I was bored and decided to have my very own Buzzfeed Meets Watchmojo moment. No hate, please and thank you (also, I'm tagging the phandom because I really want to know their opinion).
Here goes nothing:
5. My Chemical Romance
I'm respecting their dislike of the emo label by placing them at the bottom, but asserting my authority as their fan by putting them on the list anyway. Besides, there's a difference between emo as a genre and emo as a subculture. Bullets and Three Cheers? They fall into the genre. I won't say anything about the looks, though, they speak for themselves. Their evolution from post hardcore to pop punk to their own style in later albums has made them icons, not to mention their masterpiece The Black Parade (2006). If I had to pick one song, I'd pick Demolition Lovers.
4. Thursday
Criminally underrated. Blending perfect melodic verses, screamo and powerful riffs, they've made a name for themselves in the post hardcore scene. Their sense of rhythm is something that has set them apart from others, as well as them not shying away from controversial topics (like M. Shepard being my very own LGBTQ+ anthem, representing their disgust at the awful crime that inspired the song). Also, as trivia, vocalist Geoff Rickly produced MCR's first album and even provided backing vocals on This Is The Best Day Ever! (Gerard Way would do the same on Jet Black New Year the same year). Anyway, melodic verses, screamo and riffs, here's my favourite song: Concealer!
3. Sunny Day Real Estate
They simply belong on this list, that's how big their influence on emo has been. Pioneers of the genre, their music, particularly their debut Diary (1994), inspired many bands that followed, becoming an example of how the emo genre should sound and feel: tough, yet sensitive. (Also, see some familiar faces? Hint: after their first break-up, they went to be a part of the Foo Fighters first lineup!). The drums and bass (hint, hint!) on each song went steady but firm, while the guitars were in charge of the melody, and the result was something that took you to Heaven, all the way down to Hell and back to Earth. Take for example one of their best known songs: In Circles.
2. Texas Is The Reason
Few bands can say they made it after just one album and an EP, and that's exactly what this band did. Guitarist Norman Brannon felt that way after the last show of their tour saw the crowd singing their songs, something big for a foreign underground band like they were during the 90s. Their sound was even more expanding, including indie rock into it, creating something unique and lasting, like their only album's opener Johnny On The Spot.
1. Jimmy Eat World
Yes, everybody has heard The Middle and Pain, but this band is so much more than those singles, and I will die on that hill. An example of resilience and musicianship, they had an evolution from the skate punk (their ignored debut album) that was fashionable at the time, to post hardcore (the amazing Static Prevails) to a rock sound that can only be defined as true emo. Fittingly, they have released what is, in my opinion, the greatest emo album of all time: Clarity (1999), unfairly overlooked by its contemporary critics, and now getting justice by gathering a cult following. Don't believe me? I give you Just Watch The Fireworks.
#all opinions are mine and mine alone#no discourse#my chemical romance#thursday band#sunny day real estate#texas is the reason#jimmy eat world#emo#dan and phil

6. Panic! At The Disco or Fall Out Boy?
ooh! i’m into both when it comes to their older stuff but fever is one of those albums i’ll blast a lot so i’ll have to say panic!
18. Favourite My Chemical Romance song?
ohhh boy i would say all of them because i love them all dearly but the ones that are stuck in my head currently are make room!!!, f.t.w.w.w., and famous last words.. oh also our lady of sorrows. and you know what they do to guys like us in prison. i literally cannot answer this question like a normal person i am so sorry
29. Do you like any newer emo/scene/punk bands? Which?
oooh newer stuff um.. let’s see!
first of all, i have some very dear friends in a band called rich people, they’re based around pennsylvania and new jersey, i suppose if i wanted to put a genre on them i’d say they’re emo. they’ve been around a few years, i met them at my first concert actually in 2016, they were opening, it was a few months after they released their first album i believe but seriously, they just released a new song, and they are absolutely a band you’d want to keep an eye on. they’re working their way up there and i couldn’t be prouder!! back step (all the real girls) is a pretty big one for them if you wanna get into them!!!
30. What's your favourite music genre besides emo/punk\scene?
glam!!! i’m really into stuff like david bowie, the music off rocky horror, queen, the velvet underground, joan jett, the rolling stones even those are more of like borderline rock n roll. which would explain my extreme fondness for danger days as an album :’)
i also really like queercore, artists like pansy division, tribe 8 (lynn breedlove is an absolute legend), all that even though i wanna get into more artists of that genre.
oh and i’m into some hardcore but that really depends,, i’m into hardcore but especially hardcore that’s like.. got a point. stuff like leathermouth, obviously, but if we’re talking about new stuff, i'm gonna wholeheartedly recommend this band called sharptooth, who have a lot to say and a take-no-shit attitude i respect immensely. they especially address subjects like misogyny, rape culture, homophobia, mental illness, etc., i’ve seen them twice and if you’re familiar with riot grrrl like bikini kill, they do that same “girls to the front” thing. they’re progressive as hell with things and refuse to let the incredibly straight-cis-male dominated, homophobic and transphobic community that is the metal and hardcore music scene get in the way of what they’re doing. they’re the first hardcore band i’ve ever seen fronted by a woman and good lord, lauren kashan knows what she is doing. one of their guitarists is nonbinary too and honestly it means so much to see that kind of representation especially in a scene like that. here’s a song by them too!!
thank you for the asks!!!

In style Genres
But, as our chat reveals, the discordant story does not finish there: the naturally gifted Neelix attended his first doof little more than a decade ago, confesses to be unwell comfy in the studio, and plans to produce pop music within the close to future. Though he died tragically on the age of 33, Sam Cooke left a tremendous legacy from his few years as a high pop and soul performer. Many give credit score to Cooke for being a pioneer and founding father of what became often known as soul music when he moved from the gospel world to concentrate on in style music. Sam Cooke was also a pioneer among black performers on the business finish of music. He shaped his personal record label and music publishing company. He also turned a music chief within the American civil rights motion, lending it one of his most stirring songs, "A Change Is Gonna Come," as an anthem. A lot is manufactured from the Blur vs Oasis rivalry that ran all through the peak of Britpop and it's actually true that they were two of crucial bands of the decade. Blur's impressive again catalogue boasts a wealth of indelibly British songwriting with some of the wittiest lyrics of the Nineteen Nineties, and in addition a number of the simplest (see Tender). Damon Albarn would go on to create music with Gorillaz and pursue quite a lot of different intriguing initiatives, however the actual star of the present was Graham Coxon, who remains probably the most criminally underrated British guitarists of the 20th century. Banda is a blend of virtually all of the genres of the Mexican music, like the corridos, boleros, baladas, cumbias, rancheras, and also rock and pop. Banda is principally an enormous brass-primarily based form of music that primarily relies on percussion. It originated in the Sinaloa state of Mexico. Around 10 to twenty people are present in a band. The American band was banned for a long time in Australia, in 1996 the country stopped the sale of any Cannibal Corpse recordings and all copies needed to be stripped from music shops. The ban lasted ten years till it was lifted in 2006. Different H-topics have been far more dynamic. Between 1960 and 2009, the mean frequency of H1 declined by about 75%. H1 captures the use of dominant-seventh chords. Inherently dissonant (due to the tritone interval between the third and the minor-seventh), these chords are generally used in Jazz to create tensions that are finally resolved to consonant chords; in Blues music, the dissonances are typically not resolved and thus add to the attribute ‘dirty' color. Accordingly, we discover that songs tagged blues or jazz have a high frequency of H1; it is especially widespread in the songs of Blues artists equivalent to B.B. King and Jazz artists such as Nat ‘King' Cole. The decline of this topic, then, represents the lingering death of Jazz and Blues within the Scorching one hundred. Aurora One of the fastest rising stars in Norwegian music, this pop star from Os has toured the country extensively, and begun to make waves in international waters. Aurora has already won numerous awards since beginning out in 2015. Negus, Keith (1999) Music Genres and Company Cultures. London and New York: Routledge. Electro group Cybotron births early techno music with "Clear". Different early techno acts embrace Model 500 and Channel One. Later, artists comparable to Rhythm is Rhythm, Eddie "Flashin'" Fowlkes, Inside City, Jeff Mills, Frankie Bones, Plastikman, Underground Resistance, Moby, The Chemical Brothers, Joey Beltram, Ken Ishii, Underworld, The Orb, Adam Beyer, and Aphex Twin additionally define the sound. Electronic gets a nasty rap because most people don't yet perceive it. Its one of the latest forms of music with so many various subgenres with so many variations of its utilization that its completely thoughts boggling. My personal belief is that there's a subgenre of Digital music for everybody even those who claim to hate it. I hope someday that Digital music joins the annals of the very best music sorts of all time as I personally believe it's the future. In the event you really need to know the difference between minor music genres, you may need to get some listening training in drum grooves, as the majority of the time the drums gives you the largest and most obvious hint as to what the genre is. It additionally helps to get a way of popular music historical past, as most style distinctions only make sense within the context of their previous genres and the genres with which they are interacting contemporaneously. Music style — or http://www.audio-transcoder.com just style — refers to types of music. "Rock" is a music style, as our nation, reggae, classical, jazz amongst others. When speaking about genre within the music trade, it's helpful to think by way of top-level genres and sub-genres. This stuff is a shame to Country music. Old style country is my favourite genre of music. Quite a lot of that music was authentic musically and undoubtedly had loads of good songwriting. The Pet Shop Boys wrap erudite irony and romance in lush electronic keyboard textures topped by typically deadpan vocals to create their nook of the pop music world. They are one of the top five dance-pop artists of all time and are electro-pop pioneers. Vocalist and songwriter Neil Tennant has come out publicly, and the Pet Shop Boys' music frequently addresses and celebrates gay tradition.
"Few bands in rock historical past have had a extra fast and tangible affect on their contemporary pop musical panorama than Nirvana did in the early Nineties. When the Seattle trio hit the scene in 1991, mainstream radio was awash in the hair steel of Poison and Def Leppard. However seemingly inside hours of the release of Nirvana's anarchic, angry single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - and its twisted anti-pep-rally video-the foundations had changed. Artifice was devalued; pure, uncooked emotion was king," Rolling Stone writes of the band. There aren't many films in which you can see a musical legend pondering the correct strategy to punch a joint of pork - however then Scott Walker is hardly your typical artist, and 30 Century Man demonstrates exactly why such flights of fancy make the pop idol-turned arty recluse so revered. Admire the word. It's unlikely we are going to ever grow to be mates. The Rolling Stones absolutely belong on this checklist and I believe among the legendary bluesman would agree. They're solely chargeable for leading me to the style and my love of the music. They may stay here. My favourite style of music is classic rock and different rock. I like this genre as a result of among the songs and bands encourage me and I can relate to some songs. My favourite bands are the Beatles and Breaking Benjamin. Every time I really feel down I get my iPod and start listening to their music to get right back up. You possibly can stereotype some people by music. In case you see an individual with a cowboy hat, cowboy shirt, and cowboy boots you'll be able to inform that he listens to country music. Music is the most effective factor in America.

musicians that get constant stream on my Spotify
doing this cause I'm actually so bored. this is going to be a long post
5 Seconds of Summer (Australian)
I’ve loved these guys since their first album dropped and seeing them grow into these beautiful young men they are now fills my heart with so much love and pride.
Year I started listening - 2014
First song I listened to - She Looks So Perfect
First 2 albums have pop-punk vibes. 2nd album gets quite personal and has helped me through some shit. 3rd album is different but cool. Very vibey alt-pop stuff. EPs are very underrated.
All Time Low (American)
Whipped from the start. Probably the most unproblematic artist out there. Just a couple of boys who want to play their music and see their fans. Pure™️. On the final Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - Dear Maria, Count Me In
All albums up to Don’t Panic are very pop-punk. Future Hearts is pop-punk but there was this idk growth thing and it was just somewhat different to its predecessors. Kind of the record where they grew out of the ‘whiny pop-punk sk8er bois’ and into more alt-rock. Last Young Renegade was very different. Some pop-punk tracks some alt-rock some completely different. Loved it nonetheless. New songs scream Dirty Work and I’m living for it. Dirty Work is also extremely underrated and everyone should listen to it.
Boy Hero (American)
A bit like the love child of Sleeping With Sirens and Panic! At The Disco. Idk how to describe it but it’s hell good.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - How Far I'll Go (Cover). Rebel Flesh (Original song)
These guys have a whole bunch of covers. Self titled is pretty good. Also they like anime and they do twitch streams. Lead singer lowkey sounds like Brendon Urie. Got a powerful voice.
Bring Me The Horizon (UK)
Big British metal core band
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Can You Feel My Heart
First album was deathcore then went to metalcore and got less heavy over time. Lots of people didn’t like the last album but I liked it. It was different but good different. Liked how they decided to play with new sounds. Also makes it easier to cover their songs.
Counterfeit (UK)
British rock band. Also surprise remember the guy who played Jace in the Mortal Instruments movie yeah well he’s the lead singer.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Lost Everything
Got a some EPs and the album is great. Should not be slept on.
Ed Sheeran (UK)
Ok everyone should know him or you’ve been living under a rock.
Year I started listening - 2011
First song I listened to - Give Me Love
First album was straight up acoustic singer-songwriter stuff. Cute and stuff. Next 2 albums experimented with sound and it was great. There’s at least 1 song on each album that will make you cry. Actually went to his concert for the divide tour and it was great. Very chill.
The Faim (Australian)
Alt-rock with some pop-punk influences in there. Fairly new band and went under the name of Small Town Heroes before the name change. Sounds a bit like Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy and All Time Low.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Midland Line
The EP Summer Is A Curse is out now and boy it is good. Just waiting for the album to be released. They wrote some tracks with Ashton Irwin, Mark Hoppus, Pete Wentz, Josh Dun and John Feldmann and Zack Cervini produced it. I have very high hopes for the album. Entire band has this amazing stage energy which is absolutely mesmerising to watch.
Fall Out Boy (American)
Once again if you have’t heard of them you’ve been living under a rock.
Year I started listening - 2016
First song I listened to - Immortals (bless Big Hero 6)
Extremely pop-punk before the hiatus. Went into some cool different stuff after hiatus. Mania was very different than their previous albums and I actually didn’t like it too much at first but I gave it a few more listens and I loved it.
Gang of Youths (Australian)
An Australian indie band. Different to what I usually listen to. Very chill.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows
Latest albums is amazing. All the albums have a mix of bops and sad songs so you never know what you’re going to be hit with. Great lyrics throughout. Talks about real life issues in a number of the songs, some personal to the band’s life.
Green Day (American)
You have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard of these guys.
Year I started listening - 2016
First song I listened to - Wake Me Up When September Ends
Before American Idiot was like underground punk rock songs. After American Idiot got some pop influenced melodies which got them into more mainstream rock. Bops, anger, sadness and overall feelings throughout. Broadway Musical version is extremely slept on and I saw the production and it is a masterpiece. Left me kind of breathless at the end.
Harry Styles (UK)
Living under a rock if you don’t know who this wonderful man is
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - Sign Of The Times
Super different from his 1D career. Has some old classic rock influences. Bops and sad songs throughout. Powerful voice and has an amazing stage presence. Media portrays him so badly when he’s actually such a wonderful human being.
I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (American)
Ex Panic! member and ex Falling In Reverse member come together to make some cool different music. 2 beans chilling in a band together.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Choke
Music is kind of weird but cool. Bops throughout and should really release more music. Label company really needs to hurry up with whatever they’re doing cause the album’s finished but they haven’t released it.
Mayday Parade (American)
This band literally writes the saddest music known to humankind. Also unproblematic and everyone loves them. On the final Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - Miserable At Best
First 3 albums are very pop-punk. Next 2 go into more alt-rock and pop-rock. Last album are a mix of both. It sounds pop-punk but still maintains that level of growth the band has gone through since the start of their career. Be prepared with tissues cause this band will make you cry.
Mike Shinoda (American)
The rapper dude from Linkin Park. Literally the only rap artist I listen to.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Crossing A Line
Latest album is super personal but a masterpiece. Raps are amazing and vocals are on point.
My Chemical Romance (American)
Should this even be on my list cause they’re not a band, they’re an idea
Year I started listening - 2016
First song I listened to - Welcome To The Black Parade
1st album was post-hardcore and somewhat depressing. Albums got less heavier over the years. Each album also has a different theme so there’s days where I feel like I need to listen to Danger Days and other days where I need to listen to The Black Parade. Also my music teacher likes them which really surprised me since he’s an old guy that likes to listen to jazz.
One Direction (UK)
Was a 1D fangirl and still is a 1D fangirl
Year I started listening - 2011
First song I listened to - What Makes You Beautiful
All of the albums are absolutely amazing. Got less pop over time. Lots of bops with some sadness thrown in which makes my heart hurt. Not afraid to bop to them in public.
Palaye Royale (Canadian)
Actually found them when CrankThatFrank did a video with them. Still waiting for the kazoo kid to perform with Satan’s Favourite Boy Band. Just 3 brothers who want to play some music. On the final Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Mr. Doctor Man
Boom Boom Room Side A is a quality album and I’m so hyped for Boom Boom Room Side B. Rock band that likes fashion and makeup. EPs have solid songs in them.
Panic! At The Disco (American)
Living under a rock if you haven’t heard of them.
Year I started listening - 2016
First song I listened to - I Write Sins Not Tragedies
Each album has a different vibe to it so it depends on what you feel like that day on what you listen to. Didn't really like Pray For The Wicked but gave it a few more listens and I love it.
Pierce The Veil (Mexican-American)
Post-hardcore band of Sexicans based in America.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - King For A Day ft. Kellin Quinn
Got less heavy over each album. Collide With The Sky is probably my favourite album. Currently writing album 5 which I am extremely excited for. Vic Fuentes’ voice is quite high and but you get used to it. Screams are excellent.
PVMNTS (American)
Pronounced as pavements but they decided to not have vowels. Also remember Tyler Posey from Teen Wolf well yeah he’s the lead singer in the band. On the final Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Jumping Stairsets
Has a lot of early 2000s pop-punk influences. Sounds like Blink-182. Very excited for some more music from them. These guys did a UK tour with The Faim. Released an EP recently.
Shawn Mendes (Canadian)
Living under a rock if you haven’t heard of this sweet boy.
Year I started listening - 2015
First song I listened to - Stitches
Newest album is very real and super chill. Got some new different sounds in it. First 2 albums are heavy on the singer songwriter genre. Amazing writing and his voice has a somewhat raspy tinge and extremely powerful at the same time.
Sleeping With Sirens (American)
Yes this is the band where the lead singer sounds like a girl.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - If You Can’t Hang
Newest album is quite different to their past stuff but I really like it. Explored some issues in the songs which they haven’t previously done. Overall either angry or soft.
Story Untold (Canadian)
Pop-punk band. Lead singer (Janick Thibault) used to post a lot of covers on YouTube. Went under the name of Amasic before. Lead singer low-key sounds like Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. Also kind of looks like Alex Gaskarth and Awsten Knight. On the final Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - History
2 albums out currently. 1st album was extremely pop-punk. 2nd album explored some different sounds but still pop-punk. Also signed to Hopeless Records.
A Summer High (American)
Found them through CrankThatFrank when he did a reaction vid to songs I’ve never heard before. On the last Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2018
First song I listened to - Pretty Little Liar
Think fetus 5SOS and that’s basically their sound. Basically the kids who never left their pop-punk sk8er boi phase. Has quite a few covers and needs to tour with 5SOS. All 3 of them can sing and they sing like angels.
SWMRS (American)
Yes this is the band that has Billie Joe Armstrong’s kid in it. Also it’s pronounced Swimmers. Just they didn’t like vowels. Originally named Emily’s Army but they changed the name. Found these guys through a reaction to songs I’ve never heard before from CrankThatFrank
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - Lose It
Kind of like indie-surf-punk idk but it’s good. Drive North has some anger and some bops just an overall good album. Can’t wait for some new music from them.
Twenty Øne Piløts (American)
Living under a rock if you haven’t heard of them. Can’t even begin to describe the genre cause they’re just that different.
Year I started listening - 2016
First song I listened to - Ride
Bops mixed with deep lyrics and sadness. Raps are amazing. Poetic writing. 2 talented beans who deserve so much. New music is heavier and it will go so hard live I cannot wait.
The Vamps (UK)
I had a phase with this band and their first 2 albums get heavy repeat.
Year I started listening - 2014
First song I listened to - Somebody To You
First 2 albums are absolute bops. Mixed feelings from their 3rd album. Vocals are great.
Waterparks (American)
Metaphors. Metaphors everywhere. God’s Favourite Boy Band. On the final Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - I’m A Natural Blue
The EPs are great also angry and a lil bit of screaming. This band are a blessing sent from heaven and are pure boys. Follow Awsten on Twitter for the best quality content. Don't expect anything from Otto on social media he never uses it. Double Dare is cute but also slightly angry. Entertainment is full of anger and angst and sadness and it’s beautiful. Excellent songwriting.
With Confidence (Australian)
Pop-punk. Very pop-punk. Jayden Seeley has a beautiful voice. On the last Warped Tour.
Year I started listening - 2017
First song I listened to - Voldemort
First album is a poetic masterpiece. Some bops and some sadness (looking at you Long Night). Excellent songwriting throughout. Love and Loathing is probably one of the best albums of 2018.
Lol that’s it. Will probably update everytime I get into another band.

i cant fuckin remember all these emojis so can you answer the first five pls tnx
Thank you!!! I love you too
💖 Current special interest?
Fall Out Boy is my main special interest at the moment, and it has been for about two years now!
🔥 How many special interests do you have at the moment?
Uh, only one that I would call an “active” special interest, but I have long, background special interests that I’ve had since, well, as far back as I can remember. Those are as follows:
Subcultures
Disasters
Creative writing
Folklore
Hidden places
So I guess in total I have about six special interests when counting both my main special interest and my background interests, but I often have hyperfixations on top of that!
😇 If your special interest is a video game/movie/tv show/etc, who’s your fav character from it?
Okay, this is kind of difficult because of the nature of most of my interests, but I’m going to extrapolate a little and explain what my favourite areas within each interest are! It’s pretty much the same questions, but for non-media interests.
I wouldn’t really say I have a favourite band member within Fall Out Boy, but I do always have a soft spot for Pete Wentz. Not as far as to say I like him more than the others, but Pete’s lyrical writing, media interactions and other ventures are something I find really interesting.
Within the wider subject of ‘subcultures’ I have a particular focus on punk, feminist, emo and LGBT+ subcultures, which include looking at how these subcultures developed, grew, intertwined and impacted mainstream popular culture. Things like zines, underground music scenes and social media all fall under this umbrella.
When it comes to disasters I enjoy researching about both natural and human events, with a particular focus on the causes, timeline and procedures that were followed. This interest is mostly expressed through the poring over of Wikipedia pages and the watching of documentaries. Be it earthquakes, nuclear attacks, tsunamis, volcanic events, vehicle disasters or some instances of true crime, all of these interest me a great deal.
Within creative writing I have focuses on various genres within both fiction and non-fiction categories. Within fiction I like fantasy, particularly fairytales, and also realism when it intersects with bildungsroman. When it comes to non-fiction, I love creative non-fiction when it covers certain topics. Music, late 20th century Western subcultures, LGBT+ history, and travel writing.
💎 When and how did you discover your special interest?
Okay, I actually got into Fall Out Boy through a previous hyperfixation of mine. About two or three months before I developed this special interest, I’d had a hyperfixation surrounding My Chemical Romance. At this time I knew nothing about Fall Out Boy save for the characters who has cameos in fanworks and the little I’d heard of them on the radio. However, I started seeing a lot of Fall Out Boy content from bandom blogs that I followed and I began to look into them a little more. I immediately found that I absolutely loved their sound, their lyrics and the themes that came up in their writing. Don’t get me wrong because I do still like My Chemical Romance, but it didn’t take long for my interest to shift towards Fall Out Boy. Honestly, my interest hasn’t strayed past short-lived hyperfixations since then. I’m not under the illusion that this special interest will last forever, but it hasn’t waned at all since I first got into it and I love the community, the creativity, the friendship and the kinship with other fans that I’ve developed over the last few years.
✖️️ Is there something you don’t like about your special interest?
Probably the only thing I avoid regarding my special interest is any discourse that crops up within those areas. Most of my interests are thankfully discourse-free, but like anything real, flawed celebrities with a fandom, I hear of Fall Out Boy-related discourse from time to time. It usually blows over pretty quickly and the blogs I follow tend to take the same stance as me by not getting involved unless they absolutely have to. I’ve developed a real distaste for most discourse over the last few years on Tumblr, and in more than a few cases it’s become a big enough issue that it’s driven me away from my hyperfixations and old special interests (read: Steven Universe, Steam Powered Giraffe, Skulduggery Pleasant, Voltron: Legendary Defender, amongst others). I still like all of those things, but I don’t involve myself in fan communities or discuss them at all anymore. Discourse just leaves a really sour taste in my mouth, and so I tend to avoid it whenever I can.

Frank Talks to Punk Rock Confidential (X)
(posted April 19th, 2008)
Yup, another musician with a clothing label. But this just isn’t your average apparel company. Skeleton Crew, led by My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero is a social revolution complete with a manifesto and everything. Yeah, they make a mean t-shirt, they make a stylish hoodie but they also put out music, literature, support the arts and do a fair share of charitable contributions while they’re at it. They wear lots of hats, and all of them fit.
When did Skeleton Crew get started?
[It started] a couple of years back what Jamia (Frank’s wife) and a few friends started Bomb Shelter, a D.I.Y production company that put on shows at local VFW halls in North Jersey. It was a great thing because it formed a positive community of people that supported an underground movement. I remember seeing all my favourite bands play in a small room and it made a huge impression on me that kids could do this on their own. We really just wanted to be a part of something like that again so we decided to form a global crew, where like-minded individuals could get together and make a different in their own way and on their own terms. The clothing aspect is their flag to fly, a way of recognising each other and showing their affiliation. That’s why we encourage members to make their own S//C gear; it’s more creative that way. Any revenue that does come in goes right into supporting the artists that we showcase.
Who is Crew in Skeleton Crew?
Well, the board of directors – so to speak – are Jamia, Eddie, Sara and myself. We have final say over what happens with Skeleton Crew as a whole. But as far as who is ‘crew’? It’s the bands, the artists, the writers, the street teams, the friends we’ve made along the way…It’s everyone and anyone that wants to be a part of it. The great thing about S//C is that all are welcome. If you want to get involved log into the site and become part of something; the members take control of S//C.
Do you make everyone in the band wear your clothes? All your friends and family?
Nah, that’s not my thing. If friends want anything they ask me for it and I’ll give it to them but as far as travelling around with a load of goons all clad in S//C gear, that isn’t my style.
If you could have anyone living or dead wear your clothes, who would it be?
Hmm…someone crafty and witty. I don’t know. It doesn’t matter as long as they have a great ass.
If Skeleton Crew was an animal what animal would it be?
The Tootsie Roll owl perched and ready to strike.
What bands are on Skeleton Crew records?
Well we’ve tried to keep the roster pretty diverse. We only put out bands we like and find interesting: David Costa, a hip-hop artist from Indiana who put out his first EP with us and it currently writing his follow-up. He is also playing Bamboozle East. A California-based band called New Tomorrow is our newest addition to the family. They are getting set to record soon and are playing Bamboozle Left. Leathermouth is a shitty murder rock band that hails from my basement; they definitely don’t get the attention they need ‘cause I’m always away. Hot Like A Robot was a great band from San Diego that split into different incarnations and the Mean Reds (RIP) were one of my favourite bands of all time who broke up way before they got the respect they deserved. Theirs was the first record we ever put out and was the catalyst that drove me to want to start Skeleton Crew. I wanted to work with that band so bad, I made a label for them.
How do you feel about so many musicians starting clothing companies? Is it ‘cause you can’t illegally download a hoodie?
Sure, it’s an easy way to make a quick buck. Make a name, throw some skulls on there, slap it on a t-shirt and you’ve got yourself a clothing company. It’s not Calvin Klein or anything but it’s a simple way to make cash off kids and not create anything new. It’s like starting a religion. But Skeleton Crew is different ‘cause God told me to start it.
What’s next for Skeleton Crew?
Next is the KGB. This is Skeleton Crew’s initiative to start a revolution one person at a time. Think about everyone you know doing one good selfless thing a day for the rest of their lives. It’s a pay-it-forward program that takes no money, just heart. We have homework assignments and different suggestions to make the world a better place but we want it to be publicly run. So this is our challenge for us and everyone.
Where can the kids go to find out more?
Click HERE to check out their site! (site is gone)
