Todays rip: 21/01/2024
8-bit Fish With Dreams
Season 4 Episode 1 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume AI Also on: I JUST WANNA DO CATCH SOME FISHS
Ripped by l4ureleye
youtube
"This one's for you, buddy."
There's a time and place for everything, and honestly, right now really isn't the time for me to recount everything surrounding Marrow's place in the channel's history again. I've covered tributes to the ripper twice in the past, once with the heartachingly beautiful Telling Fish Tales, and later in the bittersweet cheerfulness of Turnabout Fishters. I won't repeat myself all too much here, so I suggest you read up on those posts if you're out of the loop in regards to StreetPass Fishing's place on the channel. And so, to round this topic off for the foreseeable future, we have 8-bit Fish With Dreams - one more tribute, yet one that seems to come from a rather personal place.
Honestly, in the recent months, in my time doing this blog, it's been a bit...strange, slowly assimilating into the more active parts of the SiIva community. I've said it a few times before, but before making this blog I was effectively nothing but a very invested observer - I kept my interest in the channel almost entirely to myself beyond leaving a couple of YouTube comments. That has left me out of the loop on occasion, primarily with in-jokes spawned from the SiIvaGunner Discord, yet I was content in knowing that I didn't really...have much of anything to contribute. And its with that preface said that I need to clarify once again that, I don't truly know much of any details regarding people's relations to one another in the SiIvaGunner team. Nowadays, with this blog and all, I've had the opportunity to finally talk with members of the team and other fans on a regular basis, and it's been a ton of fun - yet, I'll never know firsthand just how much Marrow meant to people. And honestly, its not exactly something that concerns me to begin with - it's not my feelings to hold.
Yet, the beautiful thing about music, about art in general, is that feelings that can be so hard to convey properly through words, through stories, through recollections and retellings, can be encapsulated so perfectly within a piece. And that is represented so beautifully within every single part of 8-bit Fish With Dreams. It's not a flashy tribute, nor some huge collaborative sendoff - but what is is, feels like a deeply personal arrangement made out of pure love. l4ureleye applies her signature flair and expertise for creating soothing, healing soundscapes in arranging 8-bit Kids with Dreams, an under-the-radar song made by fellow chiptune artist jankybit. Past the initial minute-long opening fakeout, so few parts of the original Beauford Pond remain, yet it still manages to feel...at home, with StreetPass Fishing's other music. It asks you not to be excited, nor to cry, but rather just invites you to sit by and enjoy the ride. As was the case with the original 8-bit Kids with Dreams, it feels like a gift made from one friend to another, a toast in their honor.
I really do not wish to intrude on the lives and mental states of these rippers to any degree - yet there's little I can do to avoid being emotionally affected by rips like 8-bit Fish With Dreams. As is the case with art as a whole, any rip made is inevitably going to feel like it has a piece of its ripper imbued into it. And its the ones where you can feel that most, the rips that feel almost like hearing one side to a conversation, waiting for an answer, that always end up sticking with me longest. Those are the rips like 8-bit Fish With Dreams, by rippers like l4ureleye.
"u cast your line at me when I needed it most, and helped pull me out from the murky depths of my anxiety and self loathing. I needed a friend like you, and I'm glad I got to have that. Hopefully I was good to you too, u more than deserve it. Rest easy gamer"

hey, for the record ive seen a few posts now about lives privacy policy/tracking being pretty sketchy, just for the record. idk how true that is since i haven't touched live at all but i just wanted to mention it in case there IS something sketchy going on that could potentially be bad for you/other potential live streamers
oh yeah I read through the ToS and I think I know exactly where peoples' concerns are coming from
in many social media ToS's, there is a section saying that by agreeing you consent to have all your content reproduced freely and without pay by the platform.
the purpose of this term is so that the platform can take your content and do different things with it - like DeviantArt's or INPRNT's Twitter accounts promoting artists by posting people's artwork, or basically anything involving a platform taking user content and featuring and/or changing it in any way. these use cases include things like automatic thumbnail crops of images, automatic watermarks, and content being categorized and featured in any way - but the list goes on and examples are many.
here's a specific example: I signed a similar ToS contract when I submitted my work to be featured on Intel's Office Hours. giving Intel permission to 'reproduce and transform my content without pay' allowed them to take my art and reproduce it (via screenshots) on their Twitter feed in order to promote the Office Hours session, and it gave them permission to actually show and record my work on the livestream in the first place.
these terms are broad in their wording and many people are not comfortable consenting to them because the language sounds predatory, but this is how social media currently functions in the internet ecosystem we know today.
we create and share content for free, and while social medias may give us tools to make money using them - these platforms are not obligated to pay creators when, say, crossposting their work somewhere else or featuring it on the Tumblr Radar.
the ToS DOESN'T mean these platforms get to take and sell your content directly - like they can't take my art and start selling merch with it - which is the only thing I personally care about regarding my own work.
it's definitely a tradeoff though, regarding privacy and personal data. like with late stage capitalism, there is no real 'non-sketchy' way to produce content for social media these days because we are all treated as products ourselves.
as a content creator, I have to weigh the pros and cons of what a platform provides for me vs. what it takes - but ultimately if I want total, %100 control of my work, I would have to stop using social media entirely, which unfortunately isn't feasible for me because it would directly harm my income. (my feelings on that warrant a whole post of their own but I think I'll stop typing here LOL, this is a novel already)
TLDR; the ToS sounds predatory but it's not as bad as it's worded to be... but it is still kinda iffy because that's just the state of social media. you can take it or leave it depending on your own preferences

"Del Oro" - Floating Points
◇ released: June 4, 2024 ◇ genres: tech house, microhouse
This new single from Floating Points is a sleek tech house jam. I'm admittedly a bit unfamiliar with his work on the whole, besides his excellent collaboration with Pharoah Sanders from a few years ago. Hearing this definitely makes me want to dive further into his more electronic stuff. The little switch-ups throughout this song are just super exciting to me. Very, very well made. Hopefully this leads into a full album announcement soon.

"Treat Each Other Right" | "Life" - Jamie xx
◇ released: June 4, 2024 | June 17, 2024 ◇ featured on In Waves (not yet released) ◇ genres: future garage, UK bass, funky house
Jamie xx and The XX have sort of flew under my radar for a long time, but this month I finally listened to XX's debut and I was absolutely floored by the production. One of the best sounding albums I've heard in a long time, incredibly influential too. That great production is also present on these two new tracks from Jamie xx's new album In Waves. I absolutely adore the sampling on "Treat Each Other Right," it's just so infectious. "Life" with Robyn is also pretty good. It's a more straight-forward jam, but very enjoyable. Need to go back and listen to his other albums in anticipation for this new one.

"Petco" - Cassandra Jenkins
◇ released: June 4, 2024 ◇ featured on My Light, My Destroyer (not yet released) ◇ genres: indie rock, noise pop
Cassandra Jenkins is 3-for-3 on these new singles for her upcoming album next month. This one is a bit noisier than the other two, but it's also gorgeous. Jenkins has an ethereal presence on this track and the noisy guitars juxtapose that nicely. I also adore the melodies she writes, she's a very good songwriter. I'm very excited for this album, I have a feeling it will be her strongest work to date.

"Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi" - Friko
◇ released: June 4, 2024 ◇ genres: art rock, chamber pop
This is definitely a cover of Radiohead's "Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi" from up-and-coming Chicago band Friko. I definitely heard this and experienced it. I kid a little bit, this is a decent cover, albeit a bit unnecessary. I'm probably just being a party pooper though, there's nothing wrong with it. I do love the added strings in this version, but I probably won't come back to this much.

Tumblr media
"New Way Out" - Poppy
◇ released: June 5, 2024 ◇ genre: alternative metal
I have a complicated relationship with Poppy's music. She hasn't made anything I've outright hated, but few of her songs have left a lasting impression on me. "New Way Out" is kinda the same story. It's fine, enjoyable enough, but nothing I'm super invested in. I do think the chorus is very good, it feels epic. Maybe one day Poppy's music will click for me, but that day is not today.

"Sublime Eternal Love" - Chrystabell & David Lynch
◇ released: June 5, 2024 ◇ featured on Cellophane Memories (not yet released) ◇ genres: ambient pop, ethereal wave
At the end of last month, legendary filmmaker David Lynch teased something new was coming on "June Five," well "June Five" came and we got this new single from Chrystabell and David himself. Lynch is no stranger to collaborating with singers, see his iconic collab with Julee Cruise, so this is pretty exciting. He has worked with Chrystabell in the past and she was even a prominent character in Twin Peaks: The Return, so there's history here. The song is chilling, it values atmosphere above all, but it captivates you. You just get lost in it and when you don't even realize it, the song is over. I'm a big David Lynch fan so I'm very excited for this. Chrystabell also confirmed on Twitter that the late Angelo Badalamenti performed on this album which is just so awesome.

"HOT ONE" | "BLACK FLAG FREESTYLE" - Denzel Curry
◇ released: June 5, 2024 | June 25, 2024 ◇ featured on King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2 (not yet released) ◇ genres: trap, southern hip hop
Denzel Curry has a new album on the way, the sequel to his King of the Mischievous South mixtape he released when he was 17, and it sounds like he's getting back in touch with his roots. "HOT ONE" is a southern hip hop banger, pure and simple. It features good performances from TiaCorine, A$AP Ferg, and Curry himself. The beat sounds so classic, I love it. "BLACK FLAG FREESTYLE" is a bit weaker, but it's a freestyle - it's not gonna be as tight and focused. Still, Curry shines here. He sounds reinvigorated on these songs. Really looking forward to this project, if this single is any indication I think it'll be a very fun listen.

"Russian Roulette" - Porter Robinson
◇ released: June 5, 2024 ◇ featured on SMILE! :D (not yet released) ◇ genres: indietronica, indie pop
Porter Robinson is one of those artists I just haven't gotten around to listening to for the longest time. This month I finally listened to his last album, Nurture, and was pretty impressed by it. This new single is very different from the stuff on that record, leaning much more heavily into indie pop. I like it! There's some very personal lyrics here and some silly ones, like the ones referencing Pitchfork's notorious review for that one Jet album. I'm looking forward to this new album! Glad to finally be on the Porter Robinson train.

Tumblr media
"Please Please Please" - Sabrina Carpenter
◇ released: June 7, 2024 ◇ featured on Short n' Sweet (not yet released) ◇ genres: yacht rock, contemporary r&b
"Please Please Please" is kinda the same story as "Espresso" from a few months ago like I am just left so indifferent by Sabrina Carpenter's music. I guess I can see why people are captivated by it, but I'm just bored. I'm so tired and jaded with the state of pop music right now which definitely isn't helping. I just want something exciting. Something cool and interesting ... PLEASE.

Tumblr media
"Genesis." - RAYE
◇ released: June 7, 2024 ◇ genres: UK hip hop, conscious hip hop, contemporary r&b
RAYE released a 7-minute cut, that is also split into three different parts, which details with her struggles with being in your 20s and constantly feeling like you're missing out on things you should be experiencing. Worrying about your place in the world and the world itself for that matter. I'm in the same boat, so the sentiment hits home for me. The song itself is good too, but I do wish it pushed things a bit further. I think the song would be more striking with some punchier production, but it's still a really solid song.

Tumblr media
"All My Life" - Falling in Reverse & Jelly Roll
◇ released: June 7, 2024 ◇ featured on Popular Monster (not yet released) ◇ genres: alternative rock, hard rock, country rock
This is a song specifically crafted to kill me. This is an assassination attempt on my life. They should both be in jail for trying to murder me. Fuck this song.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Imposing Will" - NAILS
◇ released: June 10, 2024 ◇ featured on Every Bridge Burning (not yet released) ◇ genres: grindcore, metalcore
New NAILS track, you know what that means! Seriously, this band rules, but you know what you're getting into with this. A fiery apocalyptic flurry that's sure to blow you away, perhaps in the literal sense.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"LET THE VIRGIN DRIVE" - SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE
◇ released: June 12, 2024 ◇ featured on YOU'LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING (not yet released) ◇ genre: neo-psychedelia
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE are returning with a new album in a few months and this lead single is very promising. I adore how this song sounds. That kind of classic psychedelia with some songwriting that has some bite to it. It's almost eery at points. Really digging this, can't wait to listen to the new album.

Tumblr media
"don't rely on other men" - JPEGMAFIA
◇ released: June 17, 2024 ◇ genres: industrial hip hop, hardcore hip hop
JPEGMAFIA, perhaps the biggest name in experimental hip hop right now and also one of the most annoying people on the internet, has returned with a new collab with Freaky. It's fine, it's what you would expect from Peggy at this point. The beat is weird, he has confrontational bars, etc. etc. you get the picture. A lot of this song is a response to people's justified criticism of his recent collaborations with Ye on the Vultures album. I'm still a fan of his music, but he reeks of insecurity about the criticism he's been facing regarding this. Like I don't know man, maybe you built your image on calling out racists, neo-nazi metal bands like Burzum, and waiting for "Morrissey to fucking die, " only for you to turn around and post a pic of you and Kanye - who need I remind everyone was doing a PR tour about how much he loves Hitler and is CURRENTLY being sued by his former assistant for sexual harrassment - while he was wearing a Burzum shirt. Like this criticism isn't unfounded and deep down he knows that. He's kinda going through an insufferable phase right now, but hopefully he pulls through. Hopefully with more interesting songs than this one too.

"Phoneglow" | "Eyes Go Blank" - Burial & Kode9
◇ released: June 18, 2024 ◇ genres: 2-step, future garage, footwork
Burial and Kode9 have released a joint single and it's pretty good! Both cuts are nothing too special, but they're nice listens. "Eyes Go Blank" might honestly be the standout for me here despite not being familiar with Kode9's work. It goes insane at some points. It's also nice to see Burial being so active as of late.

Tumblr media
"Favourite" - Fontaines D.C.
◇ released: June 18, 2024 ◇ featured on Romance (not yet released) ◇ genres: jangle pop, indie pop, indie rock
Fontaines D.C. have released another incredible single leading up to their new album in a few months. If the whole album is as strong as the last two singles, we're in for something truly special. The band dive into softer, more jangle pop sounds here to really great effect. This song just chugs along effortlessly, it's sort of captivating. Just a damn fine song. This is without a doubt one of my most anticipated releases of the year, super excited to hear Romance in full.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Road to Mandalay" - Laurie Anderson
◇ released: June 18, 2024 ◇ featured on Amelia (not yet released) ◇ genre: art pop
Experimental icon Laurie Anderson has announced a new album alongside this new single. Amelia is a concept album about .. Amelia Earhart which is a concept that I only think Anderson could pull off effectively. This song is weird and short, it feels mostly like a teaser, but it has that off-putting charm Anderson is known for. We'll see how this turns out!

Tumblr media
"#19 (Stone in Focus)" - Aphex Twin
◇ released: June 18, 2024 ◇ featured on Selected Ambient Works Volume II [Expanded Edition] (not yet released) ◇ genres: ambient, drone, electronic
Richard D. James has come out of hiding to announce an expanded edition of his 1994 album Selected Ambient Works Volume II. Alongside that, "#19" was released on streaming services - which I learned soon after from bigger Aphex Twinheads than I, that this is a massive deal. Apparently the song has been dubbed by fans as "Stone in Focus" and it was a vinyl exclusive track for the longest time, bar from a video of the song on YouTube with a monkey meditating in the background. Yeah, this song is amazing. One of his most striking and serene ambient pieces. The lazy, but always timely, synths are just like heaven on the ears.

Tumblr media
"The girl, so confusing version with lorde" - Charli XCX
🥇 BEST SONG OF THE MONTH
◇ released: June 21, 2024 ◇ genres: electropop, electro house, dance pop
Unprecedented feat in the history of these month in reviews where an artist wins both the coveted "BEST ALBUM OF THE MONTH" AND the prestigious "BEST SONG OF THE MONTH" all in the same month, but Charli XCX has done it. Her incredible album BRAT dropped this month with a song entitled "Girl, so confusing" which detailed Charli's contentious relationship with another woman in the industry. Many speculated on who it could be, but we got our answer with this remix. It was Lorde. The two then hopped on the remix and worked things out, Lorde giving a great performance here that was extremely sobering and quite devastating. It was just such a cool, sweet moment to see these two handle their issues in this public way that also elevates the song itself. In both versions of the song, Charli sings "And when we put this to bed / The internet will go crazy" and that they did. With rumors of a full BRAT remix album on the way at some point, I'm just so excited. This whole album rollout has been one of the best "events" in music this year.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"feelslikeimfallinginlove" - Coldplay
◇ released: June 21, 2024 ◇ featured on Moon Music (not yet released) ◇ genres: pop rock, synthpop
Coldplay's last album was their worst, plain and simple. A horrible, awkward mish-mash of styles with only a singular highlight that feels like an anomaly. So, did they correct course on this new single, the lead to their new album? I guess? It's a sweet, cutesy ballad that doesn't have much weight to it at all. I don't hate it, but I can't say I love it either. Just has me shrugging my shoulders. I guess we'll see how the rest of this album plays out, I'm not very optimistic at all.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Pour Me a Drink" - Post Malone & Blake Shelton
◇ released: June 21, 2024 ◇ featured on F-1 Trillion (not yet released) ◇ genres: country pop, contemporary country
Post Malone seems like a pretty charming guy, but it's hard not to look at this shift into country music cynically. We all saw those videos of pre-fame Posty singing Bob Dylan songs with his acoustic guitar, yet he still made a fortune occupying the hip hop space before transitioning into more alt-pop and pop rock sounds, now landing firmly in country. It seems like this is what he always wanted to do and that sucks, too many white rappers seem to view hip hop as a stepping stone to fame beyond it - look no further than MGK. Sooner or later, Jack Harlow will probably be making country music too. The bad news for Post is that he manages to stick out like a sore thumb in any genre he ventures into. He has no home and not in the cool way, it just feels awkward. This new song with Blake Shelton is further proof of that, it's simply fine. It feels both like a pastiche and a genuine attempt to make a good country song and it just ends up in the middle doing neither.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Reason Why" - SOPHIE
◇ released: June 24, 2024 ◇ featured on SOPHIE (not yet released) ◇ genres: dance pop, electropop, bubblegum bass
It's hard to understate the impact SOPHIE's passing had on the pop music ecosystem. We lost one of the most bold visionaries of our era far before she had reached her peak. To be honest, I still get emotional thinking about it - it's just incredibly tragic. SOPHIE's family, among other collaborators, recently announced a posthumous album of material she had given permission to be released. "Reason Why" is the first taste of that record, a song that's been beloved for years among her fans in the form of a leak and other live performances officially released for the first time. It's very good, definitely SOPHIE in pop mode as opposed to boundary-pushing experimentalist, but it's still so unique. Kim Petras gives a rare highlight performance here as does BC Kingdom. Really digging this track and I can't wait to hear the rest of the record. One of the few posthumous releases that doesn't feel predatory, this feels like it was made with love.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Common Loon" - Xiu Xiu
◇ released: June 25, 2024 ◇ featured on 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips (not yet released) ◇ genres: noise pop, space rock revival, noise rock
Xiu Xiu have announced a new album coming this September alongside this new single "Common Loon" and this might be my favorite song they've released this decade. It's a lot poppier than their last album especially, but whenever Xiu Xiu go pop they maintain that weirdness that makes them special. There's a brutality to it all regardless and that's the case here as well. The loud, abrasive guitar riff leading into the bludgeoning synths - ah, I needed this. Xiu Xiu have been one of the most consistent bands over the last few years especially, stretching back to Angel Dust, and it looks as if this next album could be another heater.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Getting No Sleep" - Tinashe
◇ released: June 28, 2024 ◇ featured on Quantum Baby (not yet released) ◇ genres: alternative r&b, future garage
I'm embarrassingly late to the Tinashe hype, but I'm here now!!! Following her big viral moment with "Nasty," she comes out swinging yet again with another very enjoyable R&B cut with a future garage edge. She has the most nonchalant hooks, but they just grab you. I feel like she's on the verge of a real big breakthrough, hopefully Quantum Baby is what catapults her to the next level.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Tumblr media
"Nomad" - Clairo
◇ released: June 28, 2024 ◇ featured on Charm (not yet released) ◇ genres: soft-rock, singer-songwriter
I wish I could get into these new Clairo singles more. Unfortunately "Nomad" also doesn't stick with me all that much as did her last single. They're fine, pleasant on the ears, but they just don't leave a lasting impression on me. These songs are just far too weightless for their own good. That chorus is cool though. I'm hoping maybe I'll eat crow when I listen to the full record in a few weeks, but this isn't shaping up to be all that exciting.

(un)True Artist
Today tumblr radar featured an "art" piece by verum-artifex. As their bio says, it means "True Artist" in Latin, but there's nothing "true" about this art; it's artificially blenderized through use of one of those art theft engines. Here's a snippet from the image so you know what to watch for:
Tumblr media
It should be a great piece: it features a studious, dark-skinned Black woman dressed in white, standing before a book case, reading a book. But there are no obvious human touches and no indication that digital assistance was used to help the artist rather than do all the work for him.
Initially the art wasn't labeled as being "AI" generated, but apparently enough people called the hack on their bullshittery that they went back and added tags. There's also a post explaining their actions in that elitist, condescending way that so many tech bros tend to adopt when they get caught.
Tumblr media
[alt text: Headline reads: The Essence of Verum Artifex: with the subheading A Journey Beyond Mediums.
Welcome to Verum Artifex- My journey in the world of art has spanned many years, enriched by various tools and mediums, both digital and traditional. Recently, AI has emerged as a valuable collaborator, not to overshadow the human touch, but to amplify imagination and bring visions to life.
The core essence of every creation here is birthed from human emotion, experience, and creativity. It's not solely the tool used, but the stories, emotions, and concepts they represent.
As you delve into this space, I humbly ask for an environment of respect and understanding. The beauty of art lies in its ability to evoke diverse emotions and interpretations. While I strive for artistic integrity, it's crucial to remember that Verum Artifex is a realm of limitless creativity and possibilities. Some pieces may be explicitly tagged based on the tools or methods used, while others might not. Regardless of tags, every creation, be it hand-drawn, digitally crafted, or AI-assisted, is a testament to the passion, thought, and artistic intent.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Here, let's celebrate art, imagination, and the myriad ways we express ourselves on this vast digital canvas.]
VA very clearly doesn't want people looking closely at the methods they use because the message and emotions are more important. It reads as deflection, to me. As Marshall McLuhan famously stated, "the medium is the message." It may not be true of all artists and creative types, but it's true enough that even someone as art-ignorant as myself recognizes that how you choose to deliver your message can be just as important as what you say.
I think if they were more willing to consistently tag their stuff as being artificially generated, I might be willing to grant the benefit of a doubt, but as it is, nah. There's plenty of honest and straightforward artists out there whose work I can peruse; I don't need to waste my time on someone who knowingly uses tools based on theft and doesn't see a problem with it.
Just passing along info without giving the fauxtist any more traffic.

SAGE 2023 Postin' PART 2!!!
Hello! I'm back again! It's the weekend so I figured... why not? Why shouldn't I play more SAGE demos? So that's exactly what I did. Play lots of SAGE demos until 2 AM like a normal person. Here's what I played today that YOU should check out!!
Susan Taxpayer - by Punkitt
I've had my eye on this game for a bit now, and was totally blindsided when I randomly found out it was a part of SAGE 2023! I wasn't planning on playing demos today but when I saw this was there, I had to go for round 2. This game is lovely so far! Wonderful art, cute characters, and nice music that I swear to god is using a Rugrats soundfont sometimes? Regardless it's good. It's pretty neat because to me it sort of feels like a fusion between Wario Land and standard Mario fare (probably because it runs in SMBX2 which is neat.) This whole game is already looking great and I love all the office themed stuff and Susan is a little hot I won't lie. Looking forward to seeing this game more in the future!
Tumblr media
Bun 'N' Gun - by Sharb
An interesting one I'd never heard of before! This is a game all about a cowboy bunny collecting bats in big open areas! It's all about speed but you also have a grappling ability that lets you swing from walls Spider-Man style as well as a gun that stuns the bats you catch. The best I could probably compare it to is the Knuckles/Rouge stages in SA2 just with a lot more speed focus. It's pretty neat! My only issue is that it can be SUPER dizzying running around super fast while the camera shifts around so quickly, which makes it hard to play. But it looks fantastic and has very catchy music in the few stages I played (didn't beat this one cause it's a little intense lol). With some more work I think this one's gonna be really cool! I think they should also add a radar to let you know when you're close to bats. It has Bunny Customization so 10/10 though.
Tumblr media
Cosmogelica - by CyanSorcery
Every time I think I've seen everything you could possibly do in a bullet hell, someone comes along and shows me new ideas I never thought of before! This genre really is just evergreen! Cosmogelica is a delightful Bullet Hell with WONDERFUL graphics, fantastic music, tight controls, and hot furry girls. But don't let that cool you off because the most interesting thing about this one is the gel gimmick. Different stages are covered in gels with different properties (the ones I saw were gels that ignite when shot, gels that stop bullets, gels that damage you upon touching, ect ect) and both you and the enemies have to play around these gels as you go. But you can also use the gels yourself if you have certain weapons! This is SUCH a neat idea that I think has TONS of potential, especially where using the gels as a weapon is concerned. Absolutely gonna have to keep up with this one!

Croaking Around - by Scallybag
This is an interesting one. It opens with an ADORABLE cutscene and a really good story too that genuinely made me chuckle a bit lol. And I really think the gameplay has a lot of potential! But it also has a lot of odd quirks I'm not so sure about. First off, I LOVE that you use your tongue for grappling, and while I think the blue grapples work lovely. The main red (orange? I forgor) ones are super clunky and I think some sort of arrow that shows you the trajectory you'll travel after launching from them would help this game TONS! Also, it has a weird auto walljump feature that bugged me. BUT, it's a super cute game and I also think this one has a lot of potential. The creator makes some amazing Sonic art on twitter too I had to follow them immediately when I went to get their link lmao

Pangolin Cassowary - by Ocotilloisland
I'll admit straight away, I almost had to give up on this one. I could not figure it out for a bit! But I'm SUPER glad I stuck with it cause I actually REALLY loved it once I figured it out. You play as a Cassowary who can kick their Pangolin Pal around like a ball and then fly to wherever they end up. There's no jumping, you HAVE to kick the Pangolin around and trick shot them up walls and such in order to platform through the level. Again, it takes a bit of getting used to but it actually RULES once you figure out how it all works. I'm SUPER interested to see more of this. Cute art style too and for some reason I found the chip crunching noises to be oh so satisfying.

Yark! : A Kobold Adventure - by YarkDev
A GAME ABOUT A LIZARD GIRL??? YES PLEASE YES PLEASE YES PLEASE! This is a stealth game all about stealing stuff as a cute kobold! What more could you ask for? It took me a bit to figure out the controls, so if you try it I really suggest you go with keyboard + mouse and don't bother with a controller. But it's actually a super fun game. I sadly could not find the rod lol but sneaking about the castle, avoiding gaurds, and feeding the treasure chest random treasures was genuinely a blast! I think there's a TON of potential for this game, and I think if the controls can be smoothed out or allow for full custom mapping this game is gonna be sweet! Also, I'll admit, I'm absolutely head over heels for Rhiri SHE IS ADORABLE so 10/10

Today's selection were other games from the SAGE 2023 trailer I forgot about until today, as well as additional random picks that caught my eye with cute characters! Also no fan games today but I played so much Sonic Battle Rush yesterday that it makes up for it I think. Like last time I encourage you to play some stuff if anything catches your eye! And also if you submitted anything to the event let me know cause I'd love to see your work!
Now I am drop dead tired and can smell smoke in my brain (kidding) so I think I'm off to bed! Bye-bye!

THE ARTIST FORMALLY KNOWN AS DON VAN VLIET – playlists by Aeon 999 / revised & expanded Feb 26
Today marks the birthdate of the truly legendary DON VAN VLIET – the artist formerly known as the founder of the MAGIC BAND. Accordingly, MFF is presenting a two-part homage to CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, which features: the best available live performances; all of his official recordings; lots of alternative takes; a variety of entertaining poetry readings; and galleries from his major art exhibitions.
A MONUMENTAL PRODIGY OF IMAGINATION – a retrospective by David D. Fowler
For one fleeting, golden moment, the most uncompromisingly experimental album in the history of rock music outsold hit recordings by the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.
The album was TROUT MASK REPLICA; and the occasion was the death of its chief creator, one Don Van Vliet – better known as the formidable Captain Beefheart. The good Captain sailed his stalwart ship into the next world’s ocean on December 17, 2010.
By that time, Trout Mask had long ago earned its status as an iconic work of art – a wild and rigorous concoction of surreal lyrics, crazed blues and free jazz explosions, imposed on a foundation of highly structured electric polyrhythms. It was the product of a creative confrontation between the brilliant and sometimes tyrannical Van Vliet, and the innovative virtuosos of the Magic Band.
To the best of my knowledge, Beefheart ceased recording music in the early 1980s; but the legacy of the music has been perpetuated in recent years, by further performances and recordings featuring members of various incarnations of the Magic Band.
Don Van Vliet was a monumental talent, on the order of Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, and James Joyce – and he excelled in the art forms of each of those masters: music, painting and writing. While best known for the musical output of his Beefheart persona, Van Vliet had two other key artistic phases.
He first drew attention as a child prodigy, crafting clay sculptures of animals on a community TV show. He pursued music in his early 20s; and after close to two decades of performing, recording, and struggling with record companies, he abandoned music and the Beefheart moniker – and started a new career as a painter, under his legal name.
In this final phase, which lasted for more than 25 years, he achieved a high degree of recognition for his quirky subject matter and vivid use of color; and for the first time, he managed to make a decent living from his creative endeavors.
But it is primarily Van Vliet’s music which has secured his status as a 20th century giant. In addition to Trout Mask, his most unconventional work can be found on albums such as LICK MY DECALS OFF BABY, SAFE AS MILK, MIRROR MAN, SHINY BEAST, STRICTLY PERSONAL, DOC AT THE RADAR STATION, ICE CREAM FOR CROW, and the original version of BAT CHAIN PULLER.
He stretched artistic boundaries in a unique and refreshing way. The resulting audio conglomeration incorporated explorations of complex and jaggedly dissonant melodic inventions; densely evocative flights of poetry; spontaneous and uninhibited jazz improvisation; quirky and unexpected bits of humour; and fiery blues vocalizing that took no prisoners.
In the process, he influenced some of the more significant figures of the past several decades, including performance artist LAURIE ANDERSON, art rock goddess PJ HARVEY, Talking Heads mastermind DAVID BYRNE, Pere Ubu trickster DAVID THOMAS, Public Image Limited maverick JOHN LYDON, and renaissance humanoid TOM WAITS,
Probably the best presentation of his musical output is a CD box set of rarities entitled GROW FINS, released in 1999, which provides an excellent overview of Van Vliet’s 16-year stint as the Captain. It contains many unreleased gems from his earlier years, and a good variety of live tracks spanning his entire career.
It also includes a CD of backing tracks from the Trout Mask sessions, which reveals how extraordinarily disciplined the music actually was, under the surface chaos. The big selling point is an enhanced CD of performance footage from the late ‘60s and early '70s. The creativity of the man’s work was awe-inspiring, and this fine release does him real justice.
Another way to remember the man, of course, is through his paintings. The finest showcases of his paintings are in two books: STAND UP TO BE DISCONTINUED; and SKELETON BREATH, SCORPION BLUSH. Many of his visual works can be viewed online by going to the fan-created collections in our BEEF ART section.
I readily concede that much of Van Vliet’s more eccentric musical expressions can be an acquired taste. But once the unwary pilgrim stumbles upon and succumbs to the siren lure of his gentle, dulcet tones and soothing maladies (um, melodies), she or he will run the risk of becoming forever enthralled.
Some of the very finest pearls of Beefheart’s musical imagination can be found in the BEEF BROTH, BEEF ALTS, and BEEF STEW playlists. They include lots of outstanding concert recordings; intriguing outtakes; imaginative videos by PlasticDada II, and various other fans; and numerous collaborations with FRANK ZAPPA.
Also featured are key folks I like to call 21st Century Quakers. I'm referring to gifted musicians who have continued to perform Van Vliet's challenging music – such as NONA HENDRYX, FREDDIE WADLING, JOLENE GRUNBERG, and MIKE WATT. Most notably, I appreciate the work of JOHN FRENCH, MARK BOSTON, DENNY WHALLEY, and other members of the revived MAGIC BAND – as well as alumni such as GARY LUCAS, MORIS TEPPER, BILL HARKELROAD, and JEFF COTTON.
At the bottom of this page, you'll find a link to our companion post, featuring Van Vliet's complete discography; a comprehensive collection of his off-kilter, confounding, and/or endearing media appearances; and a generous selection of his fanciful paintings. You'll also see a link to our birthday tribute to Beefheart rival and friend, head MOTHER Francis Vincent Zappa.
In conclusion: Methinks y'all (and your squids) will have a fast and bulbous time eating dough in a polythene bag with a tapered tin teardrop that is tight also. Just dig it! (You earn 10 points if you get this dreadful joke, and at least pretend to laugh).

Atlanta Wedding Photographer Shares Map of Atlanta's Best Wedding Venues
In downtown Atlanta there are a plethora of wonderful venues that make it so interesting for an Atlanta wedding photographer. They each have their own personality and are so much fun!
The first one that comes to mind is Ventanas which screams Atlanta! It has the best view of the skyline of Atlanta. They have a wraparound terrace where you can have your ceremony or cocktail hour for your guests. In the interior there are two stories of floor to ceiling windows that overlook Olympic Park, Mercedes Benz stadium, the Ferris Wheel, and Georgia Aquarium. The crown jewel of the venue is the helicopter landing pad on the roof. It gives you a 360 panoramic view of the city that is unobscured. As well as a dramatic backdrop to memorable wedding photos.
One of the grandest of all venues downtown is the Biltmore Ballrooms. It was built in 1924 as part of the Biltmore hotel and was the premier hotel at the time, billed as the “the South’s supreme Hotel.”  The hotel was restored to its original glory in 1999 with the renovation of the Georgian and Imperial Ballrooms and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The large columns and terrace are just the beginning of the grand historic details.  Inside the ballrooms are tall painted ceilings reminiscent of the great European palaces.
My favorite venue by far is the Fox Theatre.  It is an Atlanta landmark known throughout the south. It is famous for concerts and the mosque style architecture of the middle east. The ornate designed interior has gold leaf details and sumptuous handmade fabric. There is even exquisite trompe l’oeil art (an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create optical illusions) inside. There are two reception rooms and an outside terrace.  The biggest room is the Egyptian Ballroom where there are large columns accenting the room and in the back there is a large balcony to overlook the festivities.  The staff at the Fox are some of the better out there.
The Fox Theatre is one of Atlanta’s premiere venues for live entertainment, and the photographers at Atlanta Artistic Weddings have been honored to shoot at this venue multiple times. This venue has an extraordinarily rich history in Atlanta, starting when it was bought by William Fox, who opened this “movie palace” on Christmas Day in 1925 with the premiere of Disney’s popular cartoon Steamboat Willie. The Fox quickly became a favorite venue of the Atlanta community and expanded over time to include performances by acclaimed opera and theatre companies, concerts from pop music legends, and community dances at the peak of Swing and Big Band music.
Rhodes Hall is a high-profile historic house in the heart of downtown known as the “Castle on Peachtree.”   Built in 1904, Rhodes Hall has been an Atlanta landmark for generations. While it was originally the residence of Rhodes Furniture founder Amos Rhodes, today it is a house museum and one of the most unique venues in Atlanta for social and corporate events. The upper floors of the “Castle on Peachtree” are also headquarters for The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Rhodes Hall is a wonderful place to host your wedding. There is a wraparound porch for your guests at cocktail hour.  For the bride there is a large bridal suite for changing.   In the main room there is a grand staircase and wood paneling that makes a statement.
999 Peachtree Street Center is the home of the Peachtree Club. The Peachtree Club is located on the 28th floor.  The club's high-rise terrace is the primary feature of the venue.  It is a large open terrace 28 floors up and has one of the best views of the city.  You are level with the top of some of Atlanta's landmark buildings.  Maggie is a wedding planner there and she is a consummate professional.
The next venue worth putting on your radar is Terminus 330 located in the heart of downtown. The upstairs of the venue is the epitome of industrial chic with an impressive wrought iron entrance that welcomes guests into a large open space with original hardwoods, exposed brick, vaulted ceiling, and warm natural light. The downstairs is a 1920’s inspired space that reminds me of the prohibition days, with original stonework and vintage lighting. There is even a rooftop terrace where you get a panoramic view of the Atlanta skyline.

WEEK 8: How Instagram Filters Crash Beauty?
Instagram is a social networking site that places an emphasis on the arts and aesthetics. In order to add a favorable vibe to their photos, users frequently use Instagram's filter while taking pictures or selfies. However, in order to give audiences a "real" sense, users of this site choose natural filters over "cute" and "fun" filters like those on Snapchat (Lavrence & Cambre, 2020).
Tumblr media
More precisely, as stated by Lavrence & Cambre (2020), the novelty of the applications originally fueled the obvious, fun forms of editing that filters generated (such as the dog face filter). However, in today's social media ecologies, "a shift to subtler, ambient forms of editing, where it is not always obvious, has become normalized and entrenched." This tendency has normalized the use of filters by creating an underlying aesthetic standard for users' digital presence and images.
This is a result of the face filters' ability to increase user satisfaction when interacting with social media. A person's physical appearance can be enhanced by these filters in accordance with their ideals of beauty (Arrouf, 2018), or they can be used to conceal their identity through the use of stylized filters. According to Herrington (2019), one way to characterize the distinct features of the filters is that they let users explore an extensive array of physical possibilities that are not feasible in everyday life.
Tumblr media
On the other side, "The pervasiveness of these filtered images can affect self-esteem, make you feel bad that you are not in the real world, and even lead to body dysmorphic disorder," as Faouda Soussi puts it in her 2021 blog post, addresses these kinds of difficulties (Soussi,2021). As I mentioned in my piece last week, BDD is a major problem in today's world and will continue to have a negative impact on a number of individuals. Seeing those who exhibit an idealized figure or a flawless face might make others feel inadequate, which in turn can cause an increase in the number of persons experiencing anxiety and sadness. The social conundrum Education systems must address BDD in order to increase people's understanding of this societal disorder.

I'm not 100% sure if I'm supposed to share too much (so I won't include any tags, and won't allow reblogs), but I just took part in a tumblr user survey, proving that they listen to users (at least sometimes).
I was asked about how I felt about new features (like/neutral/dislike), some of which have been talked about on Labs (Collections), and some other "fun" things.
There was also a section that had open-ended questions—these are my thoughts (feel free to vehemently disagree about the second item in the features section below).
Features I want to see: -I would like to have something like a Pinterest board of my favourite posts, maybe even sorted into categories.
-I'd love to see more official blogs for companies (ESPN?) and celebrities since I can't follow them on Twitter anymore (because it sucks). [Ed. note: I shouldn't have used "celebrities" when I really just meant people in music/visual art/film]
Improvements I really want: -Improved search, with clearer instructions on whether boolean operators work.
-Also, I would LOVE for a way to exclude illustrations when I'm looking for e.g., a photograph (can AI do that?), as well as a way to exclude fanfics automatically.
-It would be GREAT if I could reply PRIVATELY to someone's specific post without it showing up to everyone.
Other thoughts: -"Collections" is a confusing name - it makes me think of a static group of posts. Something a little simpler like "Lists" would make it more easily understandable to me.
-Answer Time seems very interesting, but I've never seen a way to submit questions ahead of time, and right now it says that the NASA Q&A is "Live" even though it happened 3 days ago.
-What about a better way to publish fanfic? e.g., let people follow the entire work via chapters or something (so it's all organized better).
-Maybe integrate Radar somewhere more obvious? Like the Today tab?

Sweet Oblivion Fall 2023 North American Tour: Baroness w/ Jesus Piece & Escuela Grind @ Variety Playhouse
A few months ago, Baroness announced via their socials that they would release their sixth (6th) studio album entitled, Stone. Soon thereafter, Baroness dropped their Sweet Oblivion Fall 2023 North American tour schedule onto the eager masses. As an added bonus for the fans, check out their amazing supporting artists appearing on selected dates: Jesus Piece, Escuela Grind, Portrayal of Guilt, Primitive Man, KEN Mode, Wayfarer, Chat Pile, Vile Creature, Soul Glo, Sheer Mag, Midwife, Hoaxed, Cloud Rat, Imperial Triumphant, Uniform, and Agriculture. For this tour stop at The Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia, Jesus Piece and Escuela Grind would be the opening support. If you have followed my column here on Concerthopper.com, you may have recognized Baroness from previous reviews that I have done over the years. So, you must know as a fan that I would not miss this massive tour as Baroness promotes their new album, Stone, across North America with some talented friends.
Baroness is a mix of art/alternative/progressive metal from Philadelphia, PA. that formed in 2003. Baroness has released six (6) LPs, four (4) EPs, and several singles since forming as a band. As mentioned earlier, the album, Stone, their latest release. Currently, the band consists of John Dyer Baizley (lead vocals/rhythm guitar/keyboards/percussion), Nick Jost (bass/keyboards/additional backing vocals), Gina Gleason (lead guitar/backing vocals), and Sebastian Thomson (drums). Anytime that I witness Baroness perform live, I know that I am in for an energetic and fiery performance by the band. Tonight’s blistering performance by Baroness would be no different.
Confession time: over the years I have had the opportunity to take photos of some of my favorite artists/bands, and I have found that I have a fondness for certain artists/bands as I am doing photography during their set. Baroness is one of those acts. Whether it is Baroness’ dynamic energy as they perform blissfully on stage, the moments during their performance when bandmates turn to each other and give each other a joyous smile, the crunchy riffs from both John and Gina and the love and continuous support that they show to the crowd each night gets me every time I see them live.
Baroness The Masquerade 10/18/2023 setlist:
·         “Last Word”
·         “A Horse Named Golgotha”
·         “March to the Sea”
·         “Beneath the Rose”
·         “War, Wisdom, and Rhyme”
·         “Under the Wheel”
·         “Chlorine & Wine”
·         “Shine”
·         “Seasons”
·         “Wake Up/Fugue”
·         “The Sweetest Curse”
·         “Isak”
·         “Shock Me”
·         “The Gnashing”
Check out Baroness over on their Official Bandcamp page or their Official Shop (merch or Stone) and some them some support!
Jesus Piece is a metalcore/hard core metal band from Philadelphia, PA that formed as a band in 2015. They have released two (2) LPs, three (3) EPs, and several singles and are currently signed to Southern Lord Records. The band features Aaron Heard (vocals), David Updike (guitars), John Distefano (guitars), and Luis Aponte (drums) with touring musician Alexander Cejas (bass). This would be my first time getting a chance to see Jesus Piece perform live. This, I feel, is the point of Baroness bringing out a horde of incredible bands that may have performed under the radar for some music fans. From the start, you could feel the anticipation building in the crowd for the start of their vicious and brutal set. When the band first walked on stage, the crowd let them know that they were ready for the impending onslaught.
Head over to Jesus Piece’s Official Bandcamp page today and give them some support.
Escuela Grind is a power-violence/grindcore/ death-grind band originally from Ithaca, NY (known as Escuela) but is now based out of Pittsfield, MA. The band was formed in 2016 and consists of Katerina Economou (vocals), Kris Morash (guitar/bass), Jason Eldridge (bass/guitars), and Jesse Fuentes (drums). Escuela Grind has released two (2) LPs and several EPs/singles since forming as a band. What can I say except – WOW! Escuela Grind came to Atlanta to lay the foundation for the evening with some fast, heavy, and in-your-face grindcore metal. Those who came early were in for a real treat getting to see Escuela Grind do their thing on stage. You could see the crowd vibing with the band as they powered through their albeit brief but memorable setlist.
Show Escuela Grind some love, head over to their Official Bandcamp page today to check out their merchandise and music.

Answering asks pt 1.
hey! i’ve gotten quite a few asks this month, so i’m answering with two image sets, so my blog can stay cleaner.
thank you so much for all the asks, they are exciting to recieve! i hope you see this, if you asked any of these!!!
you guys can ask me more things, about whatever, and i’d be happy to answer!
(sorry if anything’s weird, english is not my first language)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

I really hope you’re doing good as well, i wish you all the best!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Hey! We are all shy here, so don’t worry, that’s why anon’s for! Hope you see this anyway!
You assumed correctly! ❤ I attend an art academy, illustration course and in my country i literary had like one option for that! (I even wanted to go to an animation school, but we don’t even have that at all.) SO I sadly really have no idea how to help you for sure, since every country has such different sistems!
I hope you can ask some older friends in your country that went through this too and can advise you, and i hope, where you live, colleges have school tours too, so you can check it out before you enroll, like we can here!
Good luck, i’m certain you’ll find the right school! ANd have a rad day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what the heckie, this is too much !!!!! my heart cant take this!!  ❤ thank you so much, you are pure and good! i wish you all the best!!
I use the smallest wacom intuos right now, i borrowed it from my friend because my big ol’ intuos’s pro cable got all wonky. it’s waiting for a friend to fix it, but he has no time so im just... using the younger sister. and i got really attached to the smal one, it’s so portable and works good!
they both work(ed) good in some respects, but for some reason many of the fancy features on my intuos pro didn’t work from the start. like configuring your tablet for lefthanded people... that didnt work ever, so i just always kinda awkwardly bumped into buttons while drawing that were on the wrong side, and couldn’t use them at all bececause, well, i was drawing with he hand you’re supposed to use them!
this turned into a weird rant, i hope i answered ok though, and i hope everyone elses intuos pro works fine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey! i DO love drawing witches, and i was searching for an inspiration as i recieved this ask, it was right on time! i’m planning on making this a full illustration, but for now, you can check out the sketch thing!
Tumblr media
thank you loads for your suggestion, i appreciate ideas that fit with what i draw, so if you guys have any, bring them on!
i do accept commissions if you want to actually order something though.
thank you everyone for your questions, i’ll be posting the second batch tomorrow if i get some time, it’s really late now and this surprisingy takes loads of time!
Please do ask more if you want! you can send me questions regarding me, you, art... whatever you feel like.
i love you, hope you all had something nice to eat today and had at least one nice thought. YOU CAN do it, be strong!!
