In defence of Ron Weasley - or: why Weasley is our King!

I have noticed that in the last decade so-called Ron-bashing has almost become a sport in the Harry Potter fandom, or at least in certain corners of the fandom. And that makes me quite sad, because in my eyes it is unjustified and a product of circumstances that have nothing to do with the canon character. People depict Ron as a laughing stock, a truly incompetent wizard who is nothing but jealous and petty. Even in fanfics where Ron is an adult he rarely outgrows his teenage character. I believe this has to do with a few thing I will get into here.

First and foremost, we have to take a stance and decide if we believe that redemption is possible or not. If you think that once a fruit shows signs of rot it is better to throw out than to salvage it, stop reading here. If you think there are parts that can be saved and possibly restored, you are probably a Draco fan as well 😉 and you're welcome to read on.

So first of all, everything we see the characters do in the books they do as children and teenagers. Adolesence is a time of great changes, physically and psychologically. The prefrontal lobe of our brain still develops until our mid-twenties. It is a time to experiment and to make decisions, even if they are objectively the wrong ones, and to learn from that and to evolve into well-adjusted, open-minded and self-reflecting adults. So it isn’t even necessary to ‘redeem’ oneself for what you did growing up, it is just imperative to evolve. I have been working with teenagers my whole professional life and I am always amazed by what happens between the ages of 10 and 20/25.

So Ron is a child in the first books and an adolescent in the final parts and we actually see him grow and evolve. Not everyone is as perfect as Hermione and we sometimes forget that people can be flawed in small ways (not only in big ways such as ‘oops, I’ve taken the dark mark and commit war crimes’). I think people tend to hate on Ron because of this. He is so normal in his jealousy and his envy. We see a lot of ourselves in him and that is uncomfortable. We turn to fiction to experience the extraordinary in both good and bad, but we rarely want to see our very common shortcomings reflected in the characters. Because then we could just read self-help books and do something about it. But we don’t. We just want to escape reality and enter into worlds where everything is starker in contrast, emotions are deeper and stakes are higher.

And Ron is not such a character. He is a mild grey. He is not the hero, but he is also not the villain. Ambiguity and nuance have very little place in fantasy. But I think that is exactly what makes Ron such a great character and the books (despite JKR’s bigotism) so fascinating.

So what I see people do in fanfiction is to push his character to the extremes – mostly make him an antagonist. Interestingly, this usually occurs in in Dramione or Harmony fics. In Drarry fics or others where Hermione and Ron stay together, he usually gets to grow up into a reasonable and well-adjusted adult. And I get it. I love Hermione and I get what she sees in Ron (stability, a deep understanding, loyalty, common values, a wise mind that complements her academic one etc.). But in stories where we pair Hermione with other people we need to get Ron out of the way. Because we cannot, for the love of Merlin, make Hermione be the problematic one in the relationship (she is the queen of the books - she cannot be touched). So of course we have to make sure that Ron is the reason why their relationship fails. And to make their breakup believable, we antagonize Ron so that there is no chance for them to get back together. From a storytelling viewpoint this makes absolute sense. But it does not do Ron’s character justice. Canon Ron is a truly amazing character. The movies did him dirty and depicted him as the slightly stupid one with the punch lines and this has often clouded our image of him. Book Ron holds much more power in the trio's friendship. He is the one who introduces Hermione and Harry to all things in the Wizarding World. He is smart – even though he is not as zealous as Hermione, he is a good student and a brilliant wizard’s chess player. He is genuine, kind and loyal. I won’t reiterate all the smart things people have said about his character before. If you are interested you can check some good arguments here:

Everything he is and everything he goes through makes him a hero in his own way. He is the character with the biggest development and the biggest potential. He overcomes his own shortcomings again and again to stay by Harry's side. Especially in the last books he struggles, makes decisions he deeply regrets and faces his insecurities.

I could go on and on about this… but leave it at this for now. I hope this makes you see Ron in a better light! Fight me in the comments or sing along my praise of Ron!

This happens often enough that it is frustrating and I wanted to say something about it: can I just please enjoy a platonic/familial Tony&Peter fanfic without that enjoyment being broken by the author insulting or bashing on Starker shipper?

I love their dynamic in canon, I love them as mentor/mentee, I love them as father/son, and the reason I love Starker ship is first and foremost the idea that love is stronger than all the potential issues they face for a potential relationship. Because that's what it is: not inherent wrong aspects, but potential issues. And "potential" means it doesn't always become a reality. Fics that explore when it isn't necessarily healthy, or legal, aren't fundamentally different than fics exploring violent themes for example. It's about the messiness and complexity of humanity, which in itself is beautiful. And in Starker, its because I love their canon dynamic and I love the idea of their love being stronger than the potential issues, that I can enjoy darker/unhealthy depictions of the ship. And it's all fiction, which is first and foremost about telling a story. And a fictional story is entertainment specifically because we know it's fiction and no real human being were harmed to make that fiction, nor does anyone depicted is an actual real human being being harmed in the events of the fictional story.

And you know what is the irony? Not a single fic I've read for Starker makes explicit or implicit comment of the same type about people who only view them as platonic/familial. When I read fics for the platonic/familial dynamic, sometimes the author in the notes will call Starker shipper "gross", or disgusting, and sometimes there are moments in the fic itself where for the idea of them together is thrown around and the characters react "ew", which sometimes make sense in context, but other times, it honestly doesn't feel like it make sense to have this show up and have this strong feeling of being in there for a more "subtle call out". But not a single fic for Starker does the same thing.

Most Starker shipper, myself included, respect if someone just doesn't see them this way. Most Starker shipper will think carefully about the tags to put, and you know what I did see often? Starker author who feel a need to state that they don't condone the real life version of the stuff that they write. It breaks my heart everytime because it's so obviously because they know what part of the fandom say about them. They can't even enjoy and write what they like without feeling a need to try and express it's just them enjoying fiction. Non-Starker act so offended, but they're the one who put pressure onto the rest of the fandom that is either platonic/familial only but respectful, or Starker too.

And you know what? I'll come out and say it: what I fucking don't condone is harrassing other people, and butting your head into the genuine happiness of others. What I happily condone is respect, choice, consent, genuine love, and a real wish for each other well-being even when it's hard or complex or messy. If two or more people genuinely care for each other, choose each other, respect each other, wants to try, and have enough maturity for their choice and consent to not be blind? That is what matter. I wouldn't want to see a late teen with an adult, because the amount of potential issues is enormous, and most of the time, it won't work out or it isn't healthy. But to pretend there isn't a tiny amount of cases where it does work out is a disservice to any relationship that started where it was really iffy, and yet worked out for them because they truly, genuinely loved each other.

You know what else I'll come out and say it? I'm a fucking survivor of CSA, and it's so damn healing to see people who enjoy things I enjoy without feeling it's only because I'm "broken", to see that it's something natural in our psyche. I was robbed the ability to grow up blind to what sex is, I was robbed my consent, I was made to feel powerless. But I recovered from all of this, a survivor and not a victim anymore, and growing up, I was always more mature than my age, which meant I knew that it is possible for someone to feel more mature than others people their age. If I fell in love with an adult as a teen, I would have known the inherent risks. And I would have been so angry, and hurt, to be dismissed, for others to try and take away my agency again. I wouldn't have wanted, and still don't want, someone to feel, or feel again, the hurt of your agency being violated. On the other end, even as a teen, and still as an adult, I would be just as angry to see a child or a teen that is being abused or who is in a dangerous situation, where their agency is not properly respected. As a teen, and now as an adult, it pisses me off to see the way people in fandom can act for mere fiction, because all I see are people who ignore and dismiss other people agency. All I see is people harassing and violating other people. Because I know what the real life feeling is like, and I can recognize it a miles away when it happens.

No fiction has either violated me. But people? Oh yes, they do. They don't even have to come attack me directly. Everytime I see them attack someone else, or make certain comments in their author note. And I'm so damn lucky I did heal, and recover. Because even though I did, it still feels frustrating and hurtful. I cannot begin to imagine how it feels like for those like me, or similar to me, who are still healing and have to face this over fiction. Who might not even know why it hurt, or only in part.

So yeah, this has angered me enough to come out and say it: watch what you are doing and saying over mere fiction, because chances are, what you are doing is violating other people. Abuse, and violation, aren't always sexual or even physical. Emotional&mental abuse, emotional&mental violation, are just as real. And fiction cannot abuse or violate, because there is no one real inside fiction, there is no power. Only real people can hurt others this way.

I didn't spend years healing and recoving to be walked over by people who either don't undestand, or who do but unknowingly (or worst, knowingly) become the abusers. And you, who enjoy dark fiction of any kind, especially "problematic ships", especially ships like Starker?

Thank you. You're the ones who sees what I see, even when you never experienced what I did, and I hope you never had to. Not the ones who act on supposed moral high grounds, but you, you are the ones who truly understand. I am angry for your sake, because I know what it feels like to be violated in the worst of ways, and I never wish anyone to be violated in any way. So thank you for looking into these topics right in the eyes, and knowing there is nothing wrong with enjoying them. Thank you, especially, to the ones that actually point out when the situation is entirely legal, if not risky, and those who show how such ships can be healthy, for unknowingly recognizing how people like me would have felt if a similar situation had happened in real life. For recognizing where the line is between what is violation, and what isn't.

You're attacked so many times from content exploring darker topics, darker depictions of ships, or ships who aren't inherently dark but have potential issues, so for once, I want you to hear it: thank you.

Tony took his sweet time to take a sip from the liquid delicatessen from the café they had gone to have a date on that afternoon, one Peter had chosen himself. “I don’t have to—”

Peter looked at him fondly, something he knew very well was capable of making Tony stop ditching a conversation and actually consider what he was going to say about it.

“Okay, alright,” Tony left the cup on the table and held up his hands in a defensive position. “I promise you.”

“You promise what, exactly?” Peter questioned, playing with some fries and trying his best not to let his lips curl up as it has been easier to get Tony to say those words than he had hoped for at first.

Tony sighed, and then he chuckled. “I promise not to organize any surprise parties for your twenty-two birthday.”

thank you for asking about my wips!! these are both old wips that have been on the backburner because i've been seized by uhhh bandom brainrot, BUT i really want to go back and finish them sometime. i've actually written a good chunk of both of them, i just need to kick myself in the butt to finish them!

homecoming starker - a post-homecoming missing scene fic where tony finds peter when he's sitting on top of the Cyclone roller coaster after the Vulture fight. peter is super beat up and doesn't want to go home right away so tony buys him mcdonald's and takes him to a condo he owns in the area. peter thinks he's in for another lecture (since the last time they talked was after the ferry incident); meanwhile, tony is freaking out because he took away peter's spidey suit and peter almost DIED (peter is also freaking out because he almost died, and he has never gotten hurt this bad before as spider-man). the fic is meant to instigate the transition from tony being the Distant Figure that he is in homecoming to a more active mentor/presence in peter's life (like he is in all the fanfics), so of course they end up talking stuff out. because i love fix-its and making characters talk things out, lol

also though i call it starker, the fic is really preslash/could definitely be tagged & not / but of course in my heart they WILL fall in love one day hahaha

wtf i looked at my draft to get an excerpt and THIS FIC IS ALMOST DONE, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME (it's only like 3k but i am chronically bad at finishing fics no matter the length)

Tears well up. He fights them back, not wanting to cry in front of Mr. Stark. But he still can’t get his voice to sound quite normal as he whispers, “I’m sorry.” “You’re sorry,” Mr. Stark echoes. And then, incredulously, “You’re sorry? What the hell do you have to be sorry for?” Peter swallows. “I caused trouble for you.” “Kid.” Mr. Stark pinches the bridge of his nose. “That is the last thing I’m worried about right now.” “Then… what are you worried about?” Mr. Stark stares at him, eyes wide. “I’m worried about you,” he snaps, and suddenly the anger that’s been radiating from him the whole night takes on a whole different shade. “Oh,” Peter says, for lack of anything better. “God, kid.” Mr. Stark shakes his head. “I’m the one who has to apologize here.” Peter waits, but Mr. Stark doesn’t say anything else. Mr. Stark must see something expectant in his look, because he says, “What?” “Well…” Peter hesitates. “You haven’t said ‘sorry’ yet. Not that I think you need to! But if you want to apologize, um. ‘Sorry’ is a pretty good place to start.”

kittydevil - a silly little fic where matt murdock gets transformed into a kitty cat and peter finds him and takes him back to his apartment. this is in a vague future AU where peter is in college at Columbia so spidey swings by hell's kitchen every once in a while after becoming friends with daredevil. matt's only a kitty for a couple days, but that is still enough time for peter to become worried sick about him when foggy calls and says he's missing. and then of course matt turns back into himself... naked... in peter's bed. WE KNOW HOW THIS TROPE GOES!

Slowly, Matt untenses. He even takes a few steps closer to Peter and clambers into his lap, to which Peter makes a pleased noise. “Yeah,” he says. “We’re okay.” He rubs Matt’s head, then runs his hands along his sides. “No way you’re a stray, are you? Sweet thing like you. You seem clean, and well-fed, but these scars… Rough kittenhood, maybe?” Matt pretends his heart doesn’t do a funny little twinge when Peter calls him sweet thing. As Peter keeps petting him, Matt feels himself truly calm down for the first time since he was turned into a cat. Something rumbles in his chest—a purr. “Aww,” Peter says, like his heart is melting. Matt feels like he’s melting too, until he’s a boneless puddle in Peter’s lap. Cozy. “Good boy,” Peter says softly. Matt closes his eyes. His purr doesn’t falter.

Well, here we are. The final chapter of Princess Parker. Thank you so so so much to everyone who has come on this journey with me. From the birth of this idea one April night in 2022 to now, Princess Parker has grown into this entire entity by himself who has carved out a special place in my heart. Peter has become his own person in the Super Starkers Discord and he sort of became a child to me and the other sprinters.

I'd like to take a second to shout out some of the people who helped to make this fic possible before we get started:

11-- The End Is Just The Beginning

Two weeks later, the duo find themselves meeting again in the science building bathroom. Peter's leaning against the counter, looking as enticing as ever. Before Tony can stop himself, he has Peter pressed against the line of sinks in a deep kiss. "Fuck, I've missed this." The edge of the sink against his back is all that keeps Peter grounded. Well, that and the feeling of Tony Stark's mouth against his. "I've missed it too." He gasps in between connections, the feeling of his words hot against Tony's lips. He slips his fingers into the back of the other's hair; something he discovered in the last week is a soft spot for Tony. As expected, the scientist gasps and allows Peter to lick into his mouth. He gasps, guiding Tony's hand to his hips, "Fuck, T." Peter whispers, head falling back slightly. "I know," Tony replies, breath ghosting over the boy's jaw.

Before they can connect again, the bathroom door creaks. "Fuck!" Peter squeaks, pushing Tony back and turning to face the sink. He turns on the water, making it look as though he's just washing his hands. Tony rushes to the other end of the sinks, and fakes fixing his hair in the mirror adjusting and readjusting his aviators. The person enters the bathroom, not looking up from his phone as he disappears into one of the stalls. Peter catches Tony's reflection in the mirror, laughing silently at the smirk he's met with. Tony winks, heading towards the door, pretending that the hand running across Peter's ass is an accident.

------ "Come in!" Tony calls the next Sunday afternoon. He continues picking up a screwdriver and screwing another bracket into place, not looking at the door. "Hey, hi." "Hi." Peter begins, flinching when Tony cries out. "Fuck!"

Peter's eyes grow wide, from where he leans against the door frame, worried that he's overstepped in showing up. "Sorry. I didn't mean to invade." He watches worriedly as Tony pulls his hands out of the metal box, blood seeping at his fingertips. "You didn't... Ahem... c-come on in!" Tony gasps, cradling his wound. Blood drips into his cupped hand as he kicks the bathroom door open, and turns on the light with his elbow. Peter rushes over, turning on the sink. "I didn't mean to startle you!" "You're fine. It just slid. It's fine." Tony runs water over the gash, watching as the water tints a slight pink. Peter leans against the counter fretting, staring at Tony's reflection. He refuses to look in the sink, avoiding seeing Tony's hand. "Peter, it's okay. It's just a small cut. I’ll survive, I’ve endured worse. I don't need stitches or medical attention. Just some good old soap, water, and a bandage." "Are you sure? I mean, I don't want you to be hurt! Are your screwdrivers safe? Is there rust?" "Easy worry wart. I promise it won't be falling apart before our next… date? I think we can call them dates?" "Is that your way of asking me out, Tony Stark?" Tony rubs his hand against the back of his neck, a sheepish look crossing his eyes. Peter smiles to himself, "Because if it is, I already have an answer." "Oh you do, do you?" Tony approaches with a smirk, placing his uninjured hand on Peter's waist and drawing him close. "Yes," Peter replies with a giggle, leaning in and kissing the punk.

Back when I was in the Starker fandom (2018) I noticed some folks getting into Tomarry, I’ve def enjoyed the art but to be perfectly honest I’ve never felt… curious enough to check fic out. Maybe that’s because I know myself, I’ll look for rec lists and after a first great read it’s downhill into the rabbit 🕳️ deep down I know I cannot handle a parallel hyperfixation that competes with my otp, I barely make time for Drarry as it is!

i normally really do not enjoy starker but dear god i need you to write the sad old dilfs fic

Sad old dilf (singular) Tony is still in his young, dumb, and full of you know playboy era. Hear me out, I'm at my most creatively fulfilled when I look at fanon or canon and I say "that has potential but poor execution, let me help you out, let me 'yes and' you" so here's my pitch for the kind of starker fic I could get on board with (Peter B Parker x 616 adjacent Tony Stark)

Peter B Parker, according to into the spider verse, is 38 years old, freshly divorced and for the sake of keeping him at his most sad and pathetic, the plot of into the spiderverse hasn't happened yet. He is crying in the shower, still wearing the spider suit, eating pizza as we speak

The last time Tony Stark's age was mentioned in the comics he was 34 (can you fucking believe he'd be 50 in the mcu currently) but I think this pairing would benefit from Tony having just finished his origin. So lets say this Tony has just realized the error of his ways and is trying to get this whole Iron Man thing to work and for the sake of drama he's still doing that thing where he pretends the iron man is his bodyguard because I love that. That'd put Tony in his mid-twenties

Spider-Man runs into Iron Man one night, at the top of Stark tower and Peter gives him a stay out of my city new guy I don't trust you kinda talk. Iron Man is like I know I'm new at this but I've got to do something good, I've got to make him for my past mistakes, I have all this power and I need to actually use it to help people. And Peter's like...okay I didn't ask for your whole backstory dude. He also makes a snide comment about Iron Man being that spoiled brat Tony Stark's bodyguard and Iron Man says that spoiled brat pays my bills. Peter is like damn is he taking applications? Iron Man gets really excited about this because Tony is of course inspired by the first superhero this city has ever had, the one protecting people for as long as he can remember. And Peter is like, I don't do team-ups or friendships, Spider-Man is a solo act right now. But he promises to help Iron Man out in an emergency, maybe give him some hero tips. Iron Man says he wants to help Spider-Man in any way he can but Peter kinda shrugs him off

There's like some Stark charity gala that Peter is forced to cover for the Daily Bugle but oh no a super villain attacks or some shit. Peter is like fuck I'm getting too old for this but puts the suit on anyways and somehow saves Tony before he can call the iron man armor. Spider-Man has to carry him out of the building which requires some kind of cradling. Spider-Man is like are you okay while like maybe holding his face or something. Tony who is instantly down bad for anyone that shows him the slightest bit of care is obsessed

the next day, Peter gets a call from the Bugle that Tony Stark wants to give them an interview, but he insists that Peter has to be the one to do it. Peter is like shit, the super genius put the pieces together but my life can't get worse so fuck it. He goes and Tony is like, you're the guy that takes pictures of Spider-Man can you give me his number. Peter is like what. Tony wants to sponsor Spider-Man and this instantly boils over into a fight because Peter thinks Tony is trying to buy Spider-Man and you can't just buy goodness, but Tony genuinely wants to help. Peter storms out and Tony slumps against his desk with a drink in his hand. He is now down bad for Peter because his type is older men that are mean to him *cough* daddy issues *cough*

Spider-Man and Iron Man work together for some save the world type thing idk I hate action set pieces. Peter mentions that Stark tried to buy him and Iron Man suggests that maybe he was just trying to help. Peter calls bullshit, but Tony pushes and says that he could give him some upgrades to his suit or Peter could work for Stark industries, with the webs like that, the guy behind the mask also has to be pretty smart. Peter tells him a hard no. But Peter gets back to his apartment to a pile of bills and no emails back from all the jobs he applied to. So he puts his masters in biochemistry to use and applies for a position at Stark Industries. He gets a call back the next day

Tony interviews him and even though he was hoping Spider-Man would apply, he needs to fill the position and Peter is undeniably qualified. Peter notices that Tony looks like shit, he looks exhausted and like he's drinking more than usual but also he's got bruises that Peter can't imagine a CEO having. After the interview is over, Peter reaches across the desk and takes Tony's hand and earnestly asks him if he's okay, maybe does the "who did this to you?" thing. Tony nearly starts crying and melts into a puddle at the same time. He does neither of those things thankfully and tells Peter he's got the job, no reason to kiss his ass. Peter rolls his eyes and says that he can be concerned without wanting Tony's money

Peter starts at Stark Industries and he's working in the lab...with Tony. He's surprised that Tony is still getting his hands dirty and he's even more surprised that the CEO wants to work with him even though he's just a new hire. Tony needs someone with biochemical experience for three reasons, he wants the vital measurements in the iron man suit to be more precise, Stark Industries used to make chemical weapons and he wants to make treatments for the victims, and he wants to improve his chest plate and treat his heart condition. Peter is like holy shit none of that is for profit that's so sexy

As they work together, they actually become friends and at the same time, Spider-Man and Iron Man are teaming up more often. After months of working with the Iron Man armor, watching Tony try on and test the armor, Peter puts two and two together, but he understands the importance of secret identities so he keeps it to himself, but he does feel bad about the double life he's created with Tony and he can't help but compare it to how that foundation of lies was what made his and MJ's relationship so unstable in the first place

It's the anniversary of MJ and Peter's divorce and Peter is fucking distraught but comes into work anyway. Tony is like you look like shit man and Peter explains. Tony gives Peter the day off and offers to go bar hopping with him. Peter gets mad at him because he knows that Tony is pushing himself too hard just like Peter did at his age. He tells him that he's still young, still has a chance to make something of his life why is he throwing it away on drinking and this party boy life and wasting away in a lab with an old burnt-out weirdo like Peter. In the middle of Peter yelling at Tony, Tony kisses him says some cheesy pick-up line about maybe he likes being yelled at by older men.

They take the elevator to Tony's penthouse in the tower and they sleep together, Tony probably calls him daddy. Peter mostly does it because he misses MJ but also maybe he likes Tony too, he definitely cares about him. But he's also having a crisis because he's a decade older than Tony but Tony is also his boss oh god what's the responsible thing to do here. Tony is down bad for Peter, he wants this so desperately to work, needs this to work because no other relationship has given a shit about him like Peter B Parker has

Tony obviously moves too fast and instantly tries to start doing romantic gestures for Peter, nice dinners, gifts, getting physical while they're working together, etc. And Peter just kinda lets it happen like he's not opposed to dating Tony and he's definitely physically attracted to him, but he's not sure if he's ready for a romantic relationship

and then idk after that Tony probably reveals that he's iron man and Peter is like fuck I feel really bad about not telling him I'm Spider-Man and that's only going to make things more complicated. Maybe Peter tries to break it off and Tony kinda spirals so Peter as the older more responsible one feels the need to continue to care for Tony. Maybe Peter thinks they're just fwb when Tony has caught feelings idk

What are your favorite things about the ship?

they foil wonderfully as characters. they think terribly alike, both taking on this heavy guilt over their own perceived failures. same humor and wit, same intellect/self made tech, same losses in life [on the same damn day i kid you not; dec 16, starks dead, may dead [nwh 'out' on 17th but could actually see it the 16th in theaters]]. shared colors. but one rich, one poor. one in the public eye, one masked. one older, experienced and worn down, one young, vibrant and earnest. even their kit is juxtaposed interestingly: tony's repulsors push stuff and peter's webs pull stuff. and they both care so damn much.

tony the futurist sees the future thriving in this kid's hands. peter looks up to him like none other. they see the best in each other and the worst in themselves. mix in the traumas [how hard it is for tony to trust ppl and how he trusts peter with more of his tech than anyone] and then the shared traumas, and the devotion of going to and beyond the damn ends of the earth for each other. how peter's sunshine heart can pull tony toward being better and tony pushes peter to be as good as he possibly can be. and with all the very good reasons they shouldn't get together, it's just so fucking good when they can't help but want to.

hmm i really can't think of any so, nope. some tropes i enjoy more than others but whatever fits for the context of the fanwork yknow, i'll entertain just about any take.

It's so wild to me that antis haven't realized that fan works for ~problematic~ ships are fucking ELITE.

Hands down some of the best, most soul-shaking fic I've read and fanart I've seen in my life have been for ~problematic~ ships. The passion that goes into them is unparalleled.

I think almost every ship has it's fair share of masterpieces. I am so old that I honestly don't have a solid definition of "problematic ship".

"Illegal IRL"? Kinda hard to apply if the characters are non-human. "Incestuous"? Is wrong technically, but if they're both consenting and not breeding, it's an ethics issue that a great deal of IRLs can't even agree on.

I don't read underage stuff that the antis claim to see everywhere - matter of fact, I don't think I've ever, and I mean EVER, have seen an actual, full throttle pedo ship / explicit content with a prepubescent or young adolescent character involved - and I've read starker and bethyl. 🤷 If they're seeing it everywhere, I think it's not a fandom issue, it's a them issue. Kind of like that old proverb, "the first who screams "thief" is usually the culprit"…

I discovered Tony while watching Civil War but didn’t really had my coup de foudre yet.

It happened when my parents made me watch Far From Home. It actually was the way Peter mourned Tony that made me watch the Iron Man movies.

And then obviously I became obsessed with both of them.

It's actually insane thinking back to my first era of MCU fandom years and years ago, like 2012-era, and comparing it to my return, where I binge-watched every movie (when I hadn't even seen every movie made at the time back in my first era) and like... there's basically no resemblance between past me and current me here fgreiuhdi.

I was a Captain America girl and now I'm an Iron Man girl. MCU version of Peter didn't even exist yet. Quentin didn't exist even harder. I hadn't seen any of the Iron Man movies, don't think I even knew of Happy or Rhodey's existences.

Basically my whole entire fandom focus didn't exist or was ignored by past me and current me is now like "wtf, how dare you"

I actually got pulled into checking the MCU back out because of running into Starker and Spiderio fic and being like 👀 So maybe that colored my priorities but who knows fergyiuhedwoai

A little post to mention that I will make adjustments to the blog sooner or later, as I decided to change what I do when I have fic ideas, I will make a proper note to share on my WIP as well as here, but long story short I realized that the whole "multi chaptered story that is cohesive/coherent" format (aka the way my fics on AO3) are takes a lot of effort that I just don't have the space to do regularly anymore, and I want to try working with just... babbling about ideas on this blog instead, and only share on AO3 if I have completed stories or series of short stories that relate to each other in term of background context.

I technically did mean to do this on this blog before, but because I still "pushed" myself to try and write "proper stories", I ended up never having the energy to be active on this blog (pretty sure now that all I did is make my brain unwilling to touch fics ideas ^^"). So now I'm hoping to be much more relaxed, and vibe on this blog sharing my ideas even if they never end up being "proper stories".

I am already testing this method with the ideas that have been most present in my head for a while, the blog is technically open and active but also I'm still working on the pages, you can find it here!

That blog is all about a crossover but each individual fandom/protagonist character have their own personal story, so in theory you can also find lots of stuff for the fandom you know even if you're not interested in the rest!

The crossover protagonists are: Peter Parker, Allen Walker, Link (BotW/TotK), Wei Wuxian, Ireth (Elf OC for DAI). There's also canon love interest(s) for each character, there's a lot that's not about the ships, but they are still present so that's either greater interest or squicks out, either way is totally fine~!

These ships are: Starker, Neallen and Poker Pair, Wild/Twilight and Wild/Gan(ondorf from TotK), Wangxian, Ireth/Cullen and Ireth/Dorian (with occasioanl mention/au where Ireth/Bull is also a thing).

The crossover blog, and the crossover ideas, is very fluid as I didn't want to "set in stone" details when it felt more fun to consider the various possible variations of the base ideas. Which, you know, is a bit hard to do with "proper stories" and why it made my inspiration lower a lot, because I love to just... vibe with ideas. Like, for a while I did enjoy figuring out how to make my ideas into "proper stories", but I guess my writing style changed? And now I enjoy a lot more "non traditional" storytelling.

So yeah, expect adjustments on this blog, a note about what I'm changing here and on my AO3 WIPs (which will also be marked "completed" because I now consider them finished since they all have a bonus that detailed my ideas, except Meet me Halfway (didn't want to spoil too much when I made the first bonus but now I need to make second bonus that does spoil XD), and hopefully a bit more activity here where I share about my existing fics and new ideas, and don't forget to check out the crossover blog as I'll be more active there!

Come to the Starker fandom, we have explorations of Tony's trauma. (I know Starker isn't everyone's cup of fanfic tea, but like, there really are a lot of fics where there are no underage shenanigans happening and the characters are remarkably well-written. Ask me for recs! I have so many recs.)

But also I feel like Tony gets Steve wrong and Steve gets Tony wrong, and this carries over to how fans see them, and is replicated in fanworks, and it always makes me sad when fics about Tony vilify Steve and fics about Steve vilify Tony because I feel like neither is giving the other enough credit. (Steve/Tony fics usually solve this problem, to be fair, but they're not my OTP so I don't read those as often.) Steve also tends to come across as really sanctimonious in Tony-centric fics, and mostly I blame Joss Whedon for that.

It is remarkable to me how much the characters don't know, though. Like, we see everything because we have access to all the movies and shows, but it still boggles my mind that, for example, none of the Avengers ever found out that Coulson was alive when his death was literally the thing they were Avenging in the first place. So yeah, a lot of them don't know about the events of Tony's first two movies, and part of that is just kind of... life, like, we don't know everything people have been through before we met them, we can only ever get a quick recap. Maybe Natasha understands Tony a little bit better than the others because she was around during the whole "dying of palladium" episode. (Nat was also there for Steve's "they brainwashed my Bucky" storyline, and it's really a shame that we didn't have more explorations of how she relates to each of those characters before she was killed off. She could have been the one to bridge the gap between them! We could have had it all, etc.)

Anyway I don't really have a point here, just disconnected thoughts. Whatever you think about the Accords, that's not really what came between them - it was the thing about Bucky killing Tony's parents, and in that case Tony was wrong to attack Bucky for something he did while brainwashed. He was justified in feeling betrayed by Steve not telling him, but like, the Avengers have dealt with brainwashed people before (like Clint under the influence of the Scepter) and they know it's not those people's fault that they were used by villains. Bucky was the weapon, not the wielder.

Ultimately I think Civil War suffered from Bad Writing, and it's a shame we'll never get a do-over on that one, either to be a better version of Civil War (here's a hint, if you want us to be heartbroken about the rift between Tony and Steve you have to show them actually being friends first, which the comics did but the movies did not), or a better Cap 3 storyline in the first place.

This is "(displayed more)(ability)," not "(displayed)(more ability)," to be clear.

(I know fiction’s depiction of torture is famously propagandafied, but in this case, it’s not about torture for information so much as physical traumas shown on screen.)

It's not really so much about "resisted the urge to hand over information" as "survived a truly harrowing experience and still came out of it trying to do good."

Tony's very first movie involves getting repeatedly drowned while in constant pain from bomb injuries as a civilian contractor, and I… don't think I can remember anything even a little similar with Steve

I don't think he's ever been captured for long before breaking out? All his injuries are in active battle, not torture.

Like... Steve went through something horrible with the ice and losing Bucky, nobody can argue that. But I think it's very telling, sometimes, that movie Steve, especially 2012 movie Steve, is completely unaware of the absolute nightmare that Tony experienced in his solo movies.

I have so many feelings about Tony Stark being the epitome of "guy who was raised and manipulated into being a bad person by someone he trusted, and (after a horrible experience) attempts to be a better person, constantly and consistently, even if he sometimes fucks up in the execution."

And the way that some fics elide his experiences in cleaning up other people's messes (first Obadiah's, then Howard's) and how that doubtlessly compounded his many neuroses from fixing messes that he did actually create himself is just

I have a lot of feelings

And am also feeling a little bitter and salty about how Tony Stark's MCU incarnation reportedly took some inspo from Elon Musk... and a little petty and satisfied about just how drastically we've all be shown that Musk can never live up to the idea of 'billionaire with inherited wealth who actually, without hesitation, risks his own life to save millions' that he tried to use PR to achieve in the media with 'my electric cars are gonna save the world' stunts about things he didn't actually have a hand in inventing

I'm just reading some fics I really enjoyed when I was still in the YA fandom, and there was a reference to a line Steve said in the movies and I started thinking (again) about how frequently fans take lines from Steve or Sam about Tony as gospel, because they haven't seen Tony's movies, and the lines from the star spangled boys are contextually meant to show that they don't know jackshit about Tony or his life, because they are directly contradicted by multiple prior films.

Also like... how often Steve's traumas get explored (in fic) in a way that Tony's just... don't? At most, his issues about Howard get explored, but that's it.

There's this moment in CACW that people take as Accurate and it infuriates me.

Tony Stark: [Back in the cell.] Just look. Because that is the fellow who was supposed to interrogate Barnes. [He shoes a holographic image of Doctor Broussard.] Clearly, I made a mistake. Sam, I was wrong. Sam Wilson: That's a first.

Which, like... it's a bad movie. Obviously. But also

That line is immediately followed by Tony revealing that he's here to help the others and is sabotaging the security to make sure Ross can't take advantage, and yet fanfic still uses Sam's quote to promote anti-Tony agendas!

And 'Tony admits he fucked up' is. Like. Listen to me

Tony's first solo movie is fixing Obadiah's machinations. *

His second solo movie is fixing his Dad's fuckup.

His first team movie is fixing Thor's mistakes.

His third solo movie is fixing something that is only tangentially his fault.

It's not until AoU that the fuck-up is really his and his alone (well, not counting Bruce), and even then, even then, a massive portion of the blame is narratively laid at Wanda's feet!

And only then do we get this man, who has spent five movies seeing what happens when people don't take responsibility for their actions, or have anyone riding them to be ethical, who has criticized himself for neither having that oversight nor providing that oversight for people who snuck shit under his nose, that is when we get Tony weighing in on the side of "most countries on the planet are agreeing with this and it's for a reason, please work with me here, maybe we can get some of it rolled back to be less authoritarian and more reasonable."

* and removing himself from the military industrial complex he was raised and groomed to be in, but that's a system and not an individual act or a set 'villain'

I would say that his first solo movie does have a large element of fixing his own mistakes too, it's just that his "mistake" was Trusting the Wrong Person and not taking personal responsibility for how his actions are affecting the world. (Which, he immediately does upon coming back from being captured? "We're going to immediately stop making weapons, because it's making the world worse" and then when Obadiah cuts him out of the company he goes "Oh. Okay no that didn't work, have to personally fix all this then.") and yeah it's just Tony have plenty of reasons to be on the side of "Someone needs to have oversight over this"

IM1 is such a good exploration of someone in privilege saying "this stops now" in a situation where they do have control because they have been confronted with their mistakes in a way that's unavoidable

It's also like, a great example of the fantasy of the Super Hero. Because Tony Stark, the businessman, even with all his wealth and knowledge, isn't able to stop the systemic harm being caused by His Own Company. One person isn't able to do that, even with the best of intentions. It isn't until he becomes something else, something more, a Super Hero, that he's able to make any kind of meaningful change on his own. Like IM1 is just a phenomenal movie. It understood it's subject material so incredibly well.

And people skip it and then take Steve and Sam at their word about Tony's strength of character and moral convictions and I scream.

THIS MAN FLEW A NUKE INTO A WORMHOLE WITH THE FULL EXPECTATION THAT HE WAS GOING TO DIE

Yeah, like, that Jump on the Grenade mentality is something that he and Steve actually literally share.

They both had 'jump on the explosive to save people' moments in their introductory movies.

I find so much more strength and inspiration in stories like Thor and Tony, where they are inherently fuck-ups and were shitty people and they are trying so damn hard to be better, which is more Tony than Thor really, but both of them and their first movies are just. I find that more inspiring than Steve or T'Challa or any other hero who was already a good person and just Became Great.

Tell me about the person who has to struggle to find that moral choice. Tell me about Natasha dragging herself from her oceans of blood and Tony fighting the government over whether they have the rights to use weapons he's created and about Thor having to reckon with his family's power being born of imperialistic ravaging of other cultures.

I want to hear about the people for whom being good is hard and a choice they don't have to make, but then they make it anyway.

Also I stand by "I am Iron Man. [infinity snap]" being the most amazing bookend the MCU could have done and probably the best part of the Endgame.

Eighteen year old art student Peter Parker is desperately searching for his muse, someone who can bring his creative skills to the next level through inspiration. Lucky for him, his next class just so happens to feature a gorgeous model by the name of Tony Stark, a man Peter's convinced is his muse, to the point of staying after class to ask for private modeling sessions.

Peter steeled himself as he slowly brought his eyes back up to have a look at Tony's face, his tongue darting out to wet his suddenly dry lips. He knew this would make or break what he was looking for in the older man, but when Tony's gaze connected with his for a fraction of a second, it was like an undeniable puzzle piece had clicked into place.

The breath Peter took immediately after was like surfacing for air after slowly drowning all his life until this very moment.
