Easy question: Outcome with $10mil with 5% for 30 years. Answer is roughly $43,000,000. That's an increase of $33 million. That's if you don't spend any of it (I think most people could find things to spend $1 million on, even if not much more than that. Friends or family members' mortgages, for example), and don't spend any of the compound, but even inside that, we can see that you will have more money than you know what to do with.

Trickier question: outcome with 0 at beginning, +$300,000/year, with 5% for 30 years. I brute forced it (look at my excel sheets they're awful).

I added 300000x1.05^30+300000x1.05^29+...+300000 to get the answer (there's probably a more elegant solution; fuck elegance).

Just shy of $20,000,000. And $20,000,000 is a smaller number than $43,000,000. The crossover point is somewhere between 90 years and 100 years, assuming single year compounding steps. After that, Scenario 1 makes more money than Scenario 2. So within your lifetime and mine, it's essentially always better to take Scenario 2 than Scenario 1 in terms of how much money it makes you. Unless Scenario 1 involves some sort of inherited artefact, 2 gives more.

That said.

If we are looking purely at Which Number Bigger, then yes, scenario 2 wins easily. But the question is not which number bigger. The question is, if you had the choice, which would you prefer?

I couldn't find any hard data (the '70% of lottery winners go bankrupt' claim seems to have spun out of nothing and not the NEFE as is usually claimed), but it certainly seems that the chances of blowing all one's money when it is handed to you daily is harder than blowing it as a lump sum. If you were suggesting to the average person which they should take and all you were allowed to say was '1' or '2,' you may well be better off telling them to choose 1.

But analysing it, what do each let you do? In Scenario 1, within three years, you could solve pretty much any financial problem in your life or the lives of the people you love with 1k/day. You can get that ball rolling within a few months, even. But if it gives you more money than sense, it doesn't give you loads more money than sense.

Compare with scenario 2, you definitely have more money than sense. It's not just that money rises quicker than sense, too much money is detrimental to sense. With $10,000,000, you could buy a helicopter. Do you need one? Unequivocally, no you don't. But you suddenly have access to all these other, stupider, higher-level purchases that you didn't have access to beforehand. Which I think is dangerous.

Do I trust myself with $10,000,000? Maybe. I would choose $10,000,000, and then put it all locked up in rules so all I get is half the compound, whatever that is in a year. Summoning enough sense to do that before I go off the rails, when I knew in advance to do that, wouldn't be hard. But I, and it appears you, already know what the smart thing to do with that money is. We trust ourselves, and we are relatively sure that bet will pay off. Great.

Temptation is still a worry. Especially for people who aren't as money aware. And it's worth pointing out that if you know people are going to make demands of your newfound wealth (I wouldn't tell anybody; I know not to tell anybody. Can we say the same about everybody else?), or if you're a kid, maybe it is the smarter move to take the $1,000 a day.

The difference between $43,000,000 and $20,000,000, to me, is not so great that I see any reason to despair for the financial literacy of the public. Yes, Bigger Number Bigger. But Smaller Number Safer. There are other aspects to this scenario than the size of the number: the person choosing is what matters. If everybody had the financial plans in place to deal with the money properly, scenario 2 would inherently be better for most people. But 1 is just safer.

This is the outcome of not being taught financial literacy better in schools, yes, but the outcome is not proof that people do not understand. Anybody could add up and say, "well, if I save ~$333,333 a year, I'm going to end up with $10 million in thirty years. Why would I wait thirty years to get what I could get right now?" Not being able to do that would not be a failure of financial literacy, it would be a failure of addition and multiplication. I think when you wonder, "is everybody stupid, or do I just not get it," it's worth considering that maybe you've missed something.

The fact that, despite the fact that it is worth less, people are choosing it, could well be a sign that people are accounting (hah) for their blindspots: "I don't know how to manage this area of risk, so I will choose safety."

That's what insurance is for, even. To know that things can go wrong (unsecured accounts, theft from trusted people, fraud, even run-of-the-mill bad decisions), even if the specifics are unknown, and to plan around that. Millions of dollars is quite the thing to gamble with, and I think that for most people, their instinct would be to go for the goose that keeps on laying. What practical reason do they have not to?

“Oh shit!” A stack of papers falls to the ground as Daisy’s body bumps right into someone in the middle of the SHIELD headquarters’ hallway.

“I’m so sorry.” The other woman mumbles as she kneels down, starting to gather all the papers from the ground. “I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

“No, it’s my fault,” Daisy picks up the few papers that flew further away.

The woman gives Daisy a small smile as she stands up, now holding all of her papers. She takes a double take, her brows scrunching together. “Aren’t you the Quake?”

“Oh god,” she cringes at the mention of her superhero name, “please call me Daisy. I hate that name.”

“Okay, Daisy. I’m Y/N.” Freeing one of her hands, Y/N reaches it out to shake Daisy’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

It’s not that Daisy doesn’t pay attention to the people working at SHIELD, because she does, she makes sure to be at least polite to everyone (who deserves it), but right now she can’t help but stare at the woman in front of her, taking her in fully. “Uhuh.” She nods, shaking Y/N’s hand softly.

“Okay.” She lets out a small laugh before pulling her hand away from Daisy’s weak grip. “I really have to get going, but I’ll see you around, maybe.” Y/N waits for a couple of seconds before walking away.

“Yeah…” Daisy whispers, her eyes following her until she finally registers reality. “Wait what?” Her eyes widen as a visceral need to get the woman’s number comes over her. She desperately looks around to find the woman, but the sea of people has already hidden her from sight. “Shit.”

Daisy has no choice but to continue her way to Coulson, who called for her at least 30 minutes ago.

“Hey, Daisy?” Coulson’s hand waves in front of her face. “Are you listening to me?”

Daisy sighs, coming out of her dreamland as she focused her gaze on Coulson. “No, sorry AC.”

“What’s going on?”

Leaning her head over the back of the couch, Daisy smiles softly as she reminisces what happened not too long ago. “I bumped into someone, a woman, today. I don’t think I’ve seen her around before, because I’d definitely remember her if I had.”

“Someone finally caught your eye?” Coulson has a small grin on his face as he listens to her talk.

“What do you mean finally?” She scoffs, rolling her eyes before going to explaining. “She was so beautiful and nice, so cute, and I was acting so weird around her.” Daisy lays her hand over her face, a small grimace on it. “But I couldn’t help it! I got completely mesmerized by her.”

Though Coulson wanted to tease her at first, his grin turns into a genuine smile. Daisy hasn’t really paid attention to people after everything that happened with Ward and then Lincoln, so he is truly happy for her.

“I didn’t get her number though.” She mumbles. “But her name is Y/N, do you know her?”

At the mention of her name, Coulson’s brows raise. “Y/N? About yay tall, great hair, smiling all the time?” He gestures with his hands, wanting to make sure they’re thinking about the same person.

“Yeah! So you do know her?”

“Ask her number from May. I’m banner from that duty since I apparently don’t know how to judge a person’s vibes well enough.” He says it as if it’s the moat ridiculous thing he has ever heard, but there’s fondness in his tone.

Daisy furrows her brows, now lifting her head up properly to watch Coulson. “You know her well? May too?”

“Mhm.” He smiles, his arms crossed over his chest. “She is our daughter.”

There is a prolonged silence as Daisy tries to wrap her head around the sentence. “Daughter? You-“ she opens and closes her mouth, her wide eyes stuck on Coulson’s grinning face. “I know you two are together, but long enough to have a whole adult daughter?”

“Very few people know.”

“Why wasn’t I one of those people?”

“Security reasons. Don’t worry, none of the people on the team know.” Coulson takes out his phone, informing May that Daisy is now aware of their daughter.

“But-“ Daisy huffs before shaking her head. “Philinda daughter…” she mumbles.

“Please don’t call her that. May might hurt you.” Coulson pats Daisy’s shoulder. “Do you want her number?”

“Yes! Yes, I want her number.”

“Go get it from May-“ Daisy is already on her feet, “she is getting the bus ready.” And Daisy is gone, leaving Coulson to chuckle by himself.

Flashfic Writealong FAQ: Feb 2025 Version

What is this thing?

It’s a writing “challenge” where you write a flash fic, ideally for MacGyver fandom. By “flash fic” I mean something <1000 words, but like most other “rules” of the writealong, it’s not set in stone. Make of it what you will!

Why are we doing this?

Look, back in 2022, I wanted to try my hand at writing some flash-sized fanfics (a big change from my 10k+ normal fic size). So I invited all the MacGyver writers to play along with me. And then we did it again in 2023. It’s like peer pressure, except everybody wins because everybody gets new fics to read. Yay!

How will it work?

There will be 10 prompts over 3 weekends starting February 20, 2025. Most prompts will be posted 2 days before the target posting date. The idea is to write a tiny story quickly, without overcomplicating it. (Overcomplication, my beloved...!)

What if I miss the target date? Can I post it later?

Heck yeah! 

Is this a whump challenge thing?

No, write whatever you want. Variety is the spice of life and one of my favorite things about this fandom. ❤️ I’ll write h/c but everybody is welcome to play along. Ship all your ships. Smut it up if you wanna. Just tag your stuff appropriately. **

*cracks knuckles* you're in for a ride with this one. the ending literally had me in tears and backflipping off the walls. I love the complex relationships in this one, and how each character is explored. Reader with the help of her best friend Claire Redfield does everything to obtain the truth of her brother Carlos Oliveira's whereabouts, who's been MIA with no trace of where he might have gone. But to what lenghts would she go to find her brother? And what obstacles would try to stop her? Honestly one of my top fics of 24

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Probably Lovesquare, but I covet Adrino more in that it's rarer, so whenever I find it I obsess. But I think love sqaure is more dynamic. There's more to do and explore with it. I get more ideas for them. But Adrino has become my comfort ship. When I'm sad or on the cusp of breaking I turn to Adrino.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Coming Of Age (Sailor Moon) - I just don't live and breathe this one anymore, but it's such a good premise.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I use to have Japanese words in some of my Sailor Moon fic. I LOVED honorifics!! I started to use less and less Japanese (besides honorifics. I always kept those. They're versatile in storytelling for showing how a relationship is changing. I love them!) because I felt like it hindered understanding in places. But I can't spell in French for some reason. Can't even get myself to consistently use Monsieur instead of Mr. Haha!

Chrono Trigger Or actually, I did some roleplaying on message boards for Wheel of Time back in the day!

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

I think right now it's Aftermath, but it's not done. Neither is Right Behind You, which is my other favorite. Haha! Of my finished fics, I'd probably choose Restorative Justice.

Spoiler-free Nocturne ramblings

(Guess everyone's all worked up about Castlevania again because "Under the Milky Way" gained like 28 kudos and 1000 hits in 5 days, yay : D )

Just finished watching Nocturne. I have thoughts, but in the interest of keeping things SPOILER-FREE (because yes I got spoiled on things because people can't bother using a spoiler tag, thanks a lot you wankers), I'll keep this as vague as possible.

Olrox: far and away the best character thus far. I can see why everyone's hot and heavy for the guy already, and the smut fics are apparently already rolling in. I would not be mad if they simply shifted this to Castlevania: Olrox and sent everyone else home. More, please! How about some merch too? I'd buy the shit out of it, dude is straight up hot.

This is not my Richter. I expected this:

(Yes that's Joseph Joestar, not Richter. The point is, sexy brunet hot-headed asshole vs. plain white bread. Richter needs more asshole points, less nutritional void.)

Since Richter is 19, that'd make Maria 12, going by the Rondo of Blood timeline (apparently she's 16 in Nocturne but she doesn't look it). For those who get why I brought that up, marinate on that, y'all. A very long marinade, maybe another 5, 6 years...

I... actually don't mind Annette. I didn't know how I'd react to her, but I have no complaints.

I rather like Edouard.

I noticed Mizrak right off the bat. Thought to myself, now there's a cutie. I'm not the only one who noticed ^_~

Um, trying to figure out how to word this without doing a reveal ^^;... Thanks for throwing us a bone, sorta, on what's probably the most well-known Castlevania threeway relationship prior to the animations? Is that vague enough?

Uh.... honestly don't have much opinion on anyone else. I predicted a much higher body count by this point and people I thought would be dead aren't, and vice versa, but I'm sure the numbers will start climbing next season.

Things I wish would've happened:

A little closer compliance to game lore, as Richter has a good amount of game lore to reference. If they skip the entirety of the SotN storyline I think that'd be a mistake since it's obviously the best-known game of the franchise.

I'm not necessarily mad at the throwing away of the Vampire Killer's special clause (that only direct line male descendants can use it) as it's patriarchal and outdated but I would've liked to seen mention of that not being the case, first, before it got flung out the window.

A LOT less crying. I know Alucard was a faucet in the original animation, but the crying jags in this are ridiculous. I'm pretty sure even the horses were crying. Tera running off sobbing like an anime girl, complete with hands over her face? Ugh. Everyone just standing around and watching Annette cry her heart out, without even a hand on the shoulder in sympathy? Uggggh. No those aren't spoilers, as everyone cries at least twice, if not more.

Original animation vs Nocturne, and the lack of camaraderie and banter:

I guess what I miss most in this series so far vs the original animation series, is the lack of teamwork and camaraderie. Trevor, Sypha and Alucard were yes, forced by circumstance, to stick together, rely on one another, and build up a rapport (they spent the majority of S2 locked in the Hold together), to the point that they could work as a team without having to verbally communicate. There was something really refreshing about that, ya know?

The protagonists of Nocturne thus far... mostly do whatever they want? There's so little interpersonal dialogue. The only character relationship thus far that feels organic at all is the one that started as straight up sex - there's an honesty to that, at least.

Also I miss the banter, a lot more than I thought I would. Even with a serious storyline I like a bit of humor in my shows / stories. How else would we have learned that Sypha has icy cold feet, Trevor can't fucking read, or Alucard is triggered by the word "the"? I came away with zero new trivia factoids about Richter, Maria, and Annette.

June 2023 MacGyver Flashfic Writealong FAQ

What is this thing?

It’s a writing “challenge” where you write a flash fic, ideally for MacGyver fandom. By “flash fic” I mean something <1000 words, but like most other “rules” of the writealong, it’s not set in stone. Make of it what you will!

Why are we doing this?

Look, I want to try my hand at writing some flash-sized fanfics (a big change from my 10k+ normal fic size). So I’m inviting all the MacGyver writers to play along with me. It’s like peer pressure, except everybody wins because everybody gets new fics to read. Yay!

How will it work?

There will be a prompt for every day from June 8-June 19 2023, with a “catch up” day on June 14. That’s 11 days of prompts. The prompts will be posted about a day in advance of the target posting date. 

What if I miss the target date? Can I post it later?

Heck yeah! 

Is this a whump challenge thing?

No, write whatever you want. Variety is the spice of life and one of my favorite things about this fandom. ❤️ I’ll probably write h/c but everybody is welcome to play along. Ship all your ships. Smut it up if you wanna. Just tag your stuff appropriately.

What about AI-generated or assisted fic?

This challenge has ONE hard and fast rule: absolutely NO AI generated or AI assisted fic. Write it yourself or don’t participate.

I wrote a thing! When do I post it?

Any time on or after the day the prompts were for. For example, if you wrote a story using the June 10 prompts, post it on June 10 (your local time) or whenever you have it ready after that.

Where should it be posted? 

Tumblr or AO3 ideally. But do whatever you want with your fic! This is supposed to be fun. And maybe less stressful than other challenges? Or more, you decide.
