Big Blue Heeler
On 8 July 2022 my wife, Robyn, and I were visiting Muswellbrook. We went for a stroll along the main shopping street and came across a two-metre-high bronze sculpture by Brett “Mon” Garling of a Blue Heeler dog (called Big Blue) – made in 2001 to celebrate the famous Australian Cattle Dog first bred at Dartbrook (12 kilometres north of Muswellbrook). I took three photos of it: Big Blue Heeler,…

Ear Wax Removal Methods: Better Hearing in Maitland and Muswellbrook
Periodical earwax removal is essential for ear cleanliness and health. If the wax is not managed properly, it can cause ear blockage, pain, or hearing problems. Hunter Valley Audiology offers ear wax removal services in Maitland and Muswellbrook that help care for your ears and improve hearing quality. In this blog, we will discuss the importance of earwax removal, its benefits and the need for expert help.
Importance of Ear Wax and its Causes
Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is part of the ear's natural protective system. It prevents dust, dirt, and bacteria from entering the ear. But when it builds up in excessive amounts or is unable to drain out, it can affect hearing. In Maitland and Muswellbrook, Hunter Valley Audiology ensures that earwax is removed in the correct way to prevent hearing problems.
Ear Wax Removal Methods
Home Remedies: There are some simple remedies to remove earwax at home, such as using olive oil, coconut oil or hydrogen peroxide. These liquids can soften the earwax, making it easier to remove. However, these remedies should be done carefully and never use sharp objects as this can damage the eardrum.
Expert Help: If you are having difficulty hearing or are experiencing ear pain, contacting an expert is the best option. Hunter Valley Audiology, located in Maitland and Muswellbrook, offers professional earwax removal services. They remove the wax using state-of-the-art equipment and safe techniques, thereby resolving hearing problems.
Microsuction Method: Microsuction is a modern and safe method in which earwax is removed with the help of a gentle suction device. This method is painless and does not harm the inner parts of the ear. Hunter Valley Audiology uses this method to ensure that patients have a safe and comfortable experience.
Benefits of Ear Wax Removal
Improved hearing: When there is excessive wax buildup in the ear, it obstructs sound waves from reaching the eardrum, causing difficulty in hearing. Wax removal improves hearing and helps you hear sounds more clearly.
Prevention of ear infections: Excessive wax can allow bacteria to grow inside the ear, increasing the risk of infection. Regular wax removal reduces the chances of ear infections.
Relief from ear pain and itching: When wax buildup causes pressure in the ear, it can cause ear pain or itching. Wax removal provides relief from this type of discomfort.

Hi Friends,
Just letting people know, that I have two photographic based works on display at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre. Just in case you are out that way in the next few months, or know someone who may be and may be interested.
One piece is shortlisted in the Mullins Conceptual Photography Prize 2024, and is on display from 15 August until 12 October 2024
I am honoured to be shortlisted again this year.
Separately and on at the same gallery, I was thrilled to be invited to include a piece in the show ‘Contemporary: APS Contemporary group’. This show is on from 15 August to 21 December 2024.
Both of these works were created on 35mm film, which was soaked in salt (and water). The work was then printed and watercolour washes applied to the print. One print has the additional inclusion of watercolour pencil and gouache. Both are unique state prints.
For more information on the shows:
The gallery is open:
Monday-Saturday : 10:00am – 4:00pm
The address is: 1-3 Bridge Street, Muswellbrook NSW 2333 (Australia)
Cheers

Should We Introduce A Building And Construction National Service Program?
In response to my recent articles about solving the Australian Housing Crisis such as “Building 1.2 Million Identical Homes In 5 Years” and “Funding The Great Australian Housing Scheme”, I’ve realised that the single biggest problem with all of this is going to be “Fully Trained Tradies”.
We are going to need an absolute huge amount of building tradespeople, so in response to that I’ve come up with “The Building And Construction National Service Program”.
This proposal is the only way I can think of successfully addressing Australia’s housing crisis and the shortage of skilled construction workers.
This initiative is just one part of “The Great Australian Housing Scheme,” which is the overarching plan to build 1.2 million identical homes over five years (although I now realise it is impossible).
My National Service program variant combines national service with comprehensive trade training to create a skilled workforce while providing participants with valuable career opportunities.
What’s It All About? Below Is The Program Overview.
The program targets Australian citizens aged 18-38, with mandatory service for those aged 18-28 and voluntary service for those aged 28-38.
Participants commit to a 9-year service period, which includes initial military-style training, trade-specific training, and on-the-job experience.
The training would be conducted at a state-of-the-art facility that would be built in Muswellbrook, NSW and each participant would be able to get fully accredited with 3 building and construction trades over their 9 years of service.
As you can imagine, this would very much set them up for life once they finish.
Participant Benefits.
Participants would receive competitive compensation, starting at $50,000 in the first year and increasing annually to $106,000 in the final year but what would make this money more appealing is that income tax on National Service salaries would be capped at 10%.
Additional benefits include a $10,000 tax-free bonus upon completion of service, minimal living expenses, and career progression opportunities. On completion of their 9 years service Graduates can enter the private sector, continue national service on much higher pay, or join the Department of Defence as Building And Construction Specialists.
Training Structure.
My proposed training program includes a 3-month military-style recruit training course, followed by three blocks of 120 days of trade-specific training at the proposed Muswellbrook campus.
Participants would gain practical experience through hands-on projects across Australia.
The curriculum would integrate occupational health, safety, environmental practices, project management fundamentals and sustainable building techniques.
Facility Details.
The Muswellbrook facility would be a self-sufficient township hub, accommodating 26,000 trainees and 1,500 staff members.
It would feature 13 training buildings, extensive accommodation, recreational facilities, medical services and sustainable energy solutions.
The facility would aim to foster a sense of community among participants while ensuring logistical efficiency and economic benefits for the local area.
Implementation Timeline.
The program’s implementation would have to be planned over several phases, starting with planning and approval, followed by facility development, recruitment and training.
The first intake of participants would be expected to get the green light and begin training within 37-48 months from time of the approval process (just my best guess), with full-scale operations commencing by month 49.
Continuous improvement and regular evaluations will ensure the program’s success and adaptability.
In Conclusion.
The “Building And Construction National Service” program offers a comprehensive solution to Australia’s housing crisis and skilled labour shortage.
By combining national service with trade training, the program would hopefully be able to create a very skilled building industry workforce, provide well over 200,000 career opportunities and contribute to the nation’s infrastructure development and give a lot of people hope about the future.

I am really excited to share the news that my work 'under the sea' (which was a finalist in the 2023 Mullins Conceptual Photography prize), has been acquired the Skinner Collection, held at the Muswellbrook Art gallery. It is an honour knowing that my work resonated with Mr Skinner and saw a place in the Collection. Thank you all at the Mullins Conceptual Photography prize who saw something in my work and made me a finalist in this important national prize. . I also wanted to publicly thank two brilliant artists and amazing humans, without them this would not have happened. Charlotte Watson (whom I met when she was managing Tinning st Gallery), encouraged me to enter the Mullins Conceptual Photography prize, as she thought my work would be a really strong fit, and she even sent me the link to the submission! . The other artist and amazing human is Christine Georgiou, who has always been there with support and generously sharing technical knowledge. In particular Christine came over one evening and helped me greatly with some frustrating technical issues I was having when I first explored painting over photographic prints. Without Christine's generosity, I would not have made an earlier work, that then lead to 'under the sea'. . It is nice to reflect that my first acquisition of this kind, came about (in part) because of the thoughtfulness and generosity of other artists. Sharing this moment with Charlotte and Christine, fills my heart with joy. . For those that are interested, two versions of this work were made. Both unique through slight modifications in the actual print, and then the unique process of hand painting over the print. They are also both sized differently. One unique print was shown at an exhibition in Melbourne ( at off the kerb gallery) and the other is the focus of this post.
