All this is correct! And I find the technical details interesting: it was a small airline, the list was from 2019 and it was a test server (notoriously bad at security). I've... been working with servers too long.

More importantly, it was full of Muslim names including little kids and people over 100 years old. And now, they are using rules, bullshit AI and personal hunches to block people from flying. This article shows how bad it is:

This morning, as I was reading the news, I thought I should probably find some non-Tumblr coverage of the no-fly list leak, which I hadn’t had time to read up on yet. I was elbows-deep in actual news coverage of that story when I felt my brain grind to a halt, because I discovered that the data was found on an unsecured server in a CSV file. 

I think it says something profound and not entirely flattering about me that I then thought, Everyone’s yelling about the polyamorous bisexual lesbian catgirl and nobody’s talking about the fact that the leak came from a motherfucking CSV file?

For context, a CSV file is the most basic possible way to store large datasets, where each data point is simply demarcated by a comma. You really only ever see it when trying to import/export to/from a database because otherwise it’s a fucking pain in the ass to use. Even if this was simply an export file from a secure database, the fact that it was the most widely accessible form of file, not even an Excel spreadsheet but like the himbo version of an Excel spreadsheet, is astonishingly bad data practice when handling that level of sensitive information. 

A CSV! I thought to myself. Who cares what a bisexual lesbian is, it was in a CSV!  

I’ve….I’ve maybe been working with databases and Excel for too long.

back in the day i had a job where i ran a few teams. part of one of the teams i ran was in china so i had to go to china twice a year just to give them face time. while i was in hong kong (free hong kong btw), i went to a uniqlo. i wanted to see what a uniqlo in china had since i belive that's where the store originated. i'm in the tee shirt area and they have limited edition jazz tees. waht!?!?! they have tees with classic jazz albums printed on the front. i was floored. i brought everyone they have in both black and white tee variation (if you’ve been a follower of this blog for a minute, you know i’m a jazzhead). but then on top of that they have limited tees featuring the work of jean-michel basquiat. LAWD! i brought all those too hahaha. so i come up and shortly after i get back, i got out to brunch with the lady i was seeing at the time. i decided to wear one of my new jazz tees i got in china. i wore the one featuring this jazz album cover

so we go out to brunch in the village, we're waiting outside for our name to be called and a young lady walking by compliments me on my tee (just like in the video). it's a dope fucking tee. i still have ALL OF THEM and it's been years since i got them. anyway, she complimented me on my tee, i say thanks, she keeps walking along and that's it. you know what my lady did? nothing. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. okay i'm lying, she smiled. we had brunch, went back to my crib and fucked. THIS IS WHAT A MATURE RELATIONSHIP LOOKS LIKE. to the brothas out there, if this isn't your story but instead your girl would get mad and hit you?

I usually don't add onto posts but i think it's also important to note that the recent list that got leaked shows evidence of this racism aswell, specifically towards people who are muslim/have "muslim sounding names".

The person who leaked the no-fly list also shared the list with some select journalists (she asked people on twitter to contact her if they wanted the list). And someone wrote an article about it.

The most obvious pattern in the data is the overwhelming preponderance of Arabic or Muslim-seeming names. More than 10% of the entries on the No-Fly list (174,202 of 1,566,062) contain “MUHAMMAD” in either the first or last name fields

So yeah it's...pretty bad.

Okay but genuinely why is the no fly list a USA government secret. Shouldn't it be public knowledge anyways? Genuinely who benefits from keeping it secret.
