Andrei Svechnikov: A Primer
written October 5th, 2023
BASICS:
Born 26 March 2000 in Barnaul, Russia
Right winger on the Carolina Hurricanes (who drafted him 2nd overall in 2018)
6’2 and 195 lbs
Andrei’s first and foremost a family oriented person. One of the most important people in his life is his brother, Evgeny. He followed Evgeny everywhere, including to Michigan in 2016, where in juniors he played for the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks; near Grand Rapids where Evgeny was playing for the Red Wings AHL affiliate. Svechnikov led the team in scoring and was named to the All-USHL Team and declared USHL Rookie of the Year. He then was selected first overall by the OHL’s Barrie Colts and later won the Emms Family Award as rookie of the year. After being selected 2nd overall by Carolina, he chose the number 37, the same as his brother.
On their childhood:
“We didn’t have much money,” Evgeny said of their childhood in Siberian Russia. “We ate from the same plate. We did everything together.” “I’ve waited for this my whole life,” Andrei said, sweat still dripping. “It’s my dream. My dream came true.” “It’s huge,” Evgeny said of both the goal and their relationship. “It’s everything.” “They moved from job to job every city,” Evgeny said. “They sacrificed so much for us.” If you ask Evgeny, there was “no doubt” Andrei would make it from the time he started dominating older competition at 5 years old. Evgeny was 8 when he fostered that opinion. Clearly he was on to something. (X)
The brothers have a special handshake and Evgeny wears a bracelet Andrei gave him everyday.
In the NHL:
Andrei made NHL history being the first player to ever score a lacrosse style goal. Seen here.
And is the only player (so far) to do two successfully.
But he can do tricks off the ice too. His first few years on the Hurricanes, he enjoyed learning magic tricks. Here's one with former beat reporter Sara Civian.
Andrei is loved by many, if not most, current and former teammates, coaches, media, and more.
Praise from others:
“I’m just proud of the kid in general,” Brind’Amour said after his first win as coach and Svechnikov’s first point. “He’s a great kid. He wants to learn and he’s got a lot to learn, but he’s going to be a great player in this league. You gotta remember how young he is, and that’s something I have to keep reminding myself. He’s just a kid, and he’s out there in the NHL and he doesn’t look out of place. We’re very fortunate to have him.”
(X)
Former Muskegon Lumberjacks GM John Vanbiesbrouck once told me he didn’t want to drop a bomb too soon, but yeah, he could see hints of Gordie Howe in a young Svechnikov. Vanbiesbrouck was more comfortable with a comparison to Todd Bertuzzi. “You know what? He’s hard to compare to anyone because there’s not a lot of guys like him,” he said after Svechnikov’s NHL debut. “Because sometimes he drives the net or sometimes he’ll see a play. He’s so multi-talented. When he drives the net — Todd Bertuzzi, one of the best net-drivers I’ve ever seen. He’s got an acute way to make plays and find lanes and shoot in place. There’s not a lot of guys like him in that way and how he can play a speed game, then a slowed-down game.”
(X)
“We were just hoping, when we got the pick, that we would get someone who was a star,” Carolina owner Tom Dundon says. “And I think we did.”
(X)
He is a gem. Always has time for everyone. Can’t wait to see him back in action next season for the canes - Justin Williams
(X)
Here's a snippet of a very heart felt interview the Svechnikov brothers gave before their first match up.
What’s his best quality as a person? Evgeny: Humble. Humble, shyness, respectful. There’s not just one word. But one thing (that) comes in my head, humble and respect(ful), of anything: parents, people around, polite. Just a good kid, man. He’s just a good kid. Andrei: I feel like he’s just a kind person — he’s always going to care about you, he’s always going to ask you if something’s wrong. He’s a culture guy. But obviously he gets a little emotional sometimes (laughter) … He’s gotta work on that a little bit, probably. When have you been the proudest of him? Evgeny: Just one thing? … That he doesn’t let himself get down, and anything happens, nothing stops him. But I think he learned that from me (laughs). And yeah, he doesn’t give up and he keeps going. Nothing bothers him, and he’s like a tractor, just keeps going, and I’m telling you, he learned that from me. Andrei: Every day, to be honest. Every day I am proud of him, to be completely honest. He’s been through a lot, there have been a lot of hard things. He was injured, now he’s here in the show. It’s going to be fun to play against him. I’m proud of him every day. Anything else you want to add about him? Evgeny: That I love him so much. He’s a great brother. Andrei: I don’t know, really — did he say anything interesting? The Athletic: He said he loves you so much and that you’re a great brother. Andrei: I love him so much, too. He is my hero.
Read the rest here.
A big mama's boy. (1)(2)
Friends on the team:
When he first joined the Hurricanes, Andrei became good friends with Dougie Hamilton and Warren Foegele. They all lived in the same building and new to the team. The Hurricanes even made a video of them hanging out and talking about their friendship called the “Three Amigos.”
Even after both Dougie and Warren were traded to other teams, he remains good friends with them. (X)
**Fun fact: Both Dougie and Warren had to pick new numbers with their new teams. Dougie, formerly #19, picked 7, (at the time, Pavel Zacha already took #37) and Warren, formerly #13, picked 37.
Andrei has always been good friends with alternate captain, Jordan Martinook. Taken under Marty’s wing from the start in 2018 when they both joined the team, Jordan has a pre-game tunnel tradition to scream Andrei’s last name to hype them up. Martinook will occasionally add in other players but he always exaggerates ‘Mista Svechnikov’ the most. Like another older brother figure, Martinook enjoys messing with Andrei in practice and in general.
After Dougie and Warren were traded, Andrei became closer with Martin Necas. Always good friends, they started going out to eat together more and attended the US Open Men’s Final in 2023.
With Seth Jarvis joining the team, Andrei gained the opportunity to be the "big brother" for once. Pulling pranks and messing around with Jarvy.
Another player who’s allowed Andrei the opportunity to grow as a leader on the team is Pyotr Kochetkov, fellow Russian and a goalie. The two have become good friends, Andrei acting as a guide and translator.
Andrei loves Carolina, and Carolina loves Andrei. One of the many reasons he agreed to an eight-year, $62 million contract with the Hurricanes in 2021.
Andrei has always loved animals. He’s good with both cats and dogs, looking forward to the annual calendar photoshoot, and adopting one of his own in 2023.
Andrei has never met a penalty box he didn’t like.
(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)
“I just love that style. Just hit hard, you know?,” Svechnikov said. “I think I’m playing a hard game, and that’s why I think I’m scoring goals. I’m gonna hit, then I’m gonna go to the offensive zone and someone’s going to give it to me and then I try and shoot it into the net. Good tries for me. I love that style of play.” (X)
He made the 2023 All Star Game, winning the Fastest Skater competition. The first person he called after was his brother.
He suffered a tear in his left ACL a couple months later, and missed the rest of the season and playoffs. However, he had fun sounding the siren and joining his good friends in the broadcast booth. He had a successful surgery and is recovering well, hoping to start the 2023-2024 season on the right foot.

Your blog seems like the place for everything Andrei♥️♥️♥️ so can I ask :
Does Andrei want to move back to Russia after retirement? What music does he like? What is his favorite TV or film? Who is his best friend? Is it true he went from Russia to America at 16, if so who did he live with? Does his brother still play hockey? Is his brother older? Is Andrei allowed to come and go between America and Russia as he pleases? Do all non Americans get a temporary visa for nhl then it expires when their contract ends? If so, what if they still want to stay, but they aren’t married? Are Russian players faced with difficulties or changes with visas after events of the past few years?
THANKS!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Wow thank you!!! Lmao my obsession has paid off, so I hope this is helpful for you 😁❤️
Does Andrei want to move back to Russia after retirement? I don't know if he's every explicitly said, but I wouldn't doubt he would want to go back after his career ends, his dad and friends all still live there, so I could see him wanting to go back. He's always said that's his home.
What music does he like? They always ask this on canes tiktoks and stuff and he always says "I don't know, probably some Russian song" 🥲 but they did a canes playoff playlist once and he chose Post Malone by Sam Feldt lmaooo and then there's also this (we're gonna get him help THIS IS SO DFKGNFGKDF)
What is his favorite TV or film? He said he watches mostly action and war movies and I think I remember him saying he loves Never Back Down??? i have not seen that lmao
Who is his best friend? His bestie is Amir Miftakhov who is a goalie for Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL
Is it true he went from Russia to America at 16, if so who did he live with? Yes he did, Evgeny (his brother) was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings which kind of influenced his decision to move to Michigan and play for the Muskegon Lumberjacks. He lived with a billet family even though his mom also did move to the US to be with her boys
Does his brother still play hockey? Is his brother older? Geno is 3 years older than Andrei and is playing for Ak Bars now
Is Andrei allowed to come and go between America and Russia as he pleases? Yep, he always goes back to Russia in the off season and has had no problems traveling to and from
Do all non Americans get a temporary visa for nhl then it expires when their contract ends? If so, what if they still want to stay, but they aren’t married? I'm no expert but if you're not from the US and want to work here, you need a valid work visa for the time you're employed here. These expire and you can either renew it or apply for a green card to become a permanent resident.
Are Russian players faced with difficulties or changes with visas after events of the past few years? Not that I know of, I think their agents work pretty hard to make sure that they face no problems!

REM PITLICK: “I DO EAT, SLEEP, BREATHE HOCKEY. AND I’M GOING BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN”
his father is a former nhl-er, lance pitlick (didn’t crack the lineup until he was in his late 20s; played for the sens and the panthers), and his mother, lisa, is a former national team gymnast (she missed the olympics due to injury)
he is a vegan and got his entire family eating vegan as well, he can cook well enough that he cooks for them when he’s home
his childhood bedroom is filled with hockey posters including: crosby, ovechkin, lecavalier, thornton
as kids rem and his brother rhett grew up vacationing/skating outdoors in the winter in wisconsin (at the cabin live a family of eagles) and skating on the pond outside their minnesota home
his parents are pretty chill for hockey parents. lance: “this is their journey, it’s easy when things are going well. it’s more challenging when they’re not. that’s why we try to be calming figures because the entire process can be very emotional for these young players. hockey is something they gravitated towards, but we wouldn’t have pushed them if they didn’t show passion for the game.”
he attended shattuck st mary’s
he was very close with his grandfather, who died in march 2021; an eagle landed near the family’s house right before his death, and again at the burial site
when he committed to the university of minnesota he was 5′ 2″ and weighed 125 lbs
rem played in the ushl for the muskegon lumberjacks and the waterloo black hawks, he was the ushl player of the year in 2016 (he was 5′ 5″ 150 lbs by this point, up to 5′ 7″ 164 lbs by the end)
drafted 76th overall by nashville in 2016
he left the ushl to go attend and play hockey for the university of minnesota
his college coach:
he played in college for three years and then signed a two-year entry level contract with nashville
he spent every penny of his signing bonus working with skills coaches
his brother rhett was drafted by the habs in 2019
rem and rhett talk every day
rhett describes rem as “the wisest person i’ve ever met”
both of them help out with their dad’s coaching / online hockey lesson database by demo’ing the lessons
he played the 2019-21 season in the ahl with the milwaukee admirals
when he didn’t make the team out of training camp, he asked david poile if he could be traded to a team where he’d get an nhl opportunity
nashville waived him in october 2021; the wild picked him up off of waivers
at the time nashville’s beat writer called him “an above-average ahl player”
he was put in covid protocol at the end of october
in his fifth game with the wild--november 13, 2021--he scored his first three nhl goals with a natural hat trick
rem, the deep thinker, talked about it like this:
he had six goals in 20 games and a 46.2% shooting percentage. whoops
was told by bill guerin he and his girlfriend could rent a place
he gives a really good quote: “i’ve had some very low lows in my life, and i’ve also had some pretty cool highs. … i know that there’s probably going to be lows coming again, so i just kind of try to keep balanced. but my energy, my sleep, my nutrition, my hydration, my movement, and staying connected to people i love and enjoying some stuff in life, that’s my way of staying with it and putting myself in the best position to succeed. i’m actually reading mark messier’s book right now, ‘no one wins alone.’ it’s a testimony to the fact that it takes a small army, and there’s been so many people along my path who have helped me. but i’m going to do everything in my power to make having a long career, hopefully in minnesota, a reality.”
but... turns out he wasn’t really a good fit there even so; the wild’s coach later said “rem’s played well in spurts . . . he’s competed. he’s tried. it’s just a situation where we’re going to go in another direction.”
it seems like they wanted him to play solely on a grindy fourth line role with low minutes, but that wasn’t really his style of play
he ruffled some feathers with the wild’s higher ups by saying in a media availability that he was trying to “blend” his skill set with what the team wanted
he made an immediate impact in montreal, with six points in his first seven games. since marty st-louis’ arrival, he’s seen his role expand, both in ice time and the ability to play on special teams.
about being waived: “it’s not easy. you’re just like staring at a wall. it’s tough. very hard mentally . . . i was just hoping, kind of preparing, just hoping that I was going to go somewhere else. you don’t know if you’re going to get picked up. my agent’s calling me saying teams are interested. i’m like: ‘ok, what teams, where are we going?’ then it’s: ‘all right, montreal,’ and it’s so exciting.”
specifically, about montreal: “so i’m really grateful for that, and of all the organizations in the nhl it’s the montreal canadiens, where hockey started. to be able to be recognized and valued and picked up by them definitely makes you feel good, for sure.”
he enjoys reading (recent reads include mark messier’s no one wins alone)
his first few days in montreal were kind of tough; he had to find a rental car and a hotel but he noted that the city has a distinctive energy
on playing in the centre bell for the first time: “just the music and the locker room and all the faces, the old-timers and just the legacy and how grand this thing really is. it’s unbelievable to be a part of and i’m just beyond grateful. that’s the big thing, gratitude.”
incredibly thoughtful about how he plays: “the whole game matters. in our meeting today, marty was just talking about how little plays led to goals and how every single play matters. i try to work on all aspects of my game and i appreciate that he kind of sees me as that kind of player as well that isn’t a defensive liability… i think perception isn’t always reality and i think sometimes with other coaches and other teams i was put inside of a box because ‘okay, rem is this type of player maybe and that type of player isn’t always a defensive player’ and sometimes perception does create reality for some people and i appreciate that he’s able to separate the two and see me for who i am.”
rem, on winning: “we are working. it’s serious. we want to win. there is kind of the heaviness of that really frickin’ matters. but at the end of the day, we are playing a game and how can we in all the situations balance that.”
he described his time in montreal as chilling in the positive vibes
rem, on playing for montreal: there is a lot of pride in putting on that jersey. It’s funny. It’s been 3 jerseys now. Nashville’s and - it’s just been really interesting. On the inside collar of the jerseys there is always a little saying. In Nashville, it was a music keyboard because it is a music city and Minnesota was a shooting star. And Montreal, I don’t speak french, so sorry, but just the quote, passing of the torch, is this really cool thing and I know that it hasn’t been the season that we wanted it but there is a tremendous amount of pride in. My brother is drafted here and all I see at home is his whole room decorated in Montreal. So I’ve been aware of the energy at my house. For me to be here now is like ‘Holy cow, it’s been in my face’ and now I get to do it too… I’m rambling now …
he’s been playing between 13 and 19 minutes a night, which is pretty cool :)
overall this season across several teams, he’s got 40 games played, 10 goals, 11 assists, 21 points, and is -3 (considering he’s played significant time on the habs it could be worse lmao)
right now? 5′ 11″ 196 lbs
with some instagram research we’ve determined the necklace he’s got in some availabilities is a coin-shaped pendant of some kind but we don’t know WHAT it is
anyway he’s got incredible vibes and i like him VERY much.

svech: a very serious and responsible primer
ok @totally-necessary and @needsmore, i am gonna write you an andrei svechnikov primer and i am going to do my best to produce a work of responsible well-sourced expository prose instead of an embarrassing thirsty disaster like the rest of my andrei svechnikov blogging.
here is my introductory paragraph:
wait, no, give me another shot. i swear i can actually do this. here is my introductory paragraph:
HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THIS GOOD-NATURED FEARLESS JOYFUL SHOULDER-FRECKLED SEX KITTEN????? HOW CAN I DO ANYTHING BUT CRY ALL THE TIME?????
.......ok. sorry. let me try it again. i’ll do it right this time, i promise. here is my introductory paragraph:
once upon a time in siberia, two-year-old andrei svechnikov put on skates for the first time and cried because he couldn’t follow his big brother evgeny onto the ice. eventually evgeny’s coach let andrei join the team’s workouts, and then coach started giving the older players a hard time when andrei would beat them.
the backstory of the svech bros sounds a lot like every other hockey kid who didn’t grow up privileged: parents who worked multiple jobs and sacrificed and moved cities to make sure the kids got hockey opportunities. in interviews, the svechnikov brothers have referenced not knowing where food or clothes were going to come from, and they emphasize how close it made them. evgeny says:
Having a brother that we eat from one plate--sleep in one bed sometimes--we went through everything. It's just one person by your side always. It's like going hunting alone or with somebody.
they wear the same number. they talk every day. as soon as the season paused in march, evgeny drove to north carolina. lately, they’re hanging out in michigan. basically, if hockey is not being played, they are together. basically, if you are going to write a primer about andrei, the most important thing is evgeny.
(my theory is that evgeny is at least part of the reason andrei does not like it when dougie and foegs joke about him being their kid brother. it’s the only joke i’ve ever seen svech refuse to roll with.)
evgeny got drafted by the red wings in 2015 (round 1, 19th overall). he started out with the AHL affiliate in grand rapids, and in 2016 mama svech packed up andrei and moved from russia to michigan. andrei played a season for the muskegon lumberjacks in the USHL. he led the team in scoring and was named USHL rookie of the year. the next season he was the first selection in the CHL import draft, and played for the barrie colts.
ok, so while we’re knocking out the backstory, i want to note that svech’s full name is Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov. don’t tell me that’s not sexy.
furthermore, the very spelling of andrei is sexy. i had a russian-speaking colleague once who had a son named andrei and she would say his name with a little lift at the end. not like the i added another syllable, just like a little caress. i hear it that way when i type it. it makes me happy to type that i at the end. andrei. andrei.
oh sorry, did i veer off topic?
the carolina hurricanes selected andrei second overall in the 2018 draft. he looked just as dumb as everybody always does in their draft night jersey photos, but here’s his draft day suit:
oh wait, can’t pass up the opportunity for a combine photo
did i say COMBINE? i meant JAWLINE
wait one more photo from the combine, just because he looks especially dead poets society in this one:
upon moving to raleigh, andrei emphatically wanted to live alone, which seems unusual for an 18-year-old entering the NHL and is therefore fertile ground for all sorts of headcanons. he keeps his floors very clean and gets mad when his buddies won’t take their shoes off. i am not making this up. he lives in the same apartment complex as dougie hamilton, warren foegele, joel edmundson (rip), and teuvo teravainen. andrei does not cook and he’s constantly calling them to see who wants to go out to eat.
in that last video i linked you can see foegs stumble and jump off his scooter just before he hits the gate to their parking garage. then the gate rises like magic and svech glides straight through. this is an unsubtle metaphor for andrei svechnikov’s entire athletic existence.
svech purportedly does not play video games, which is wild to me. instead, he practices magic tricks. again, i am not making this up.
wait i’m sorry it’s been at least ten minutes since i looked at a picture of andrei svechnikov holding a bunch of kittens
ok where was i.
svech had a pretty solid rookie season in 2018-19, but you can look up the numbers elsewhere if you want them. he was the first player born this century to score in the NHL but we don’t like to think about his 2000 birthdate. he played on a line with jordan martinook for a lot of that first season, and you can read more about that romantic nonsense in the ship primer i’ll be writing next. more recently the canes have settled into a top line of svech, sebastian aho, and teuvo teravainen, which is a pretty deadly combo.
one incident of note from svech’s rookie season is that he got knocked the fuck out by alex ovechkin. we’ll be talking more about that in the ship primer too, but if you want the video it’s here.
here, have a little celly:
svech’s most touted accomplishment is scoring the NHL’s first-ever Michigan-style lacrosse goal. this article has a very good description of how it worked. the postgame interview from that game is so endearing it makes me want to claw my face off. he’s talking so fast (for him) and he keeps repeating that his brother taught it to him, just absolutely determined to make sure everyone knows this milestone belongs to evgeny too.
also, this season, he scored the first playoff hat trick in franchise history.
the thing about andrei svechnikov is that nobody has a bad word to say about him. everybody thinks he’s an amazing player (”skilled and tenacious yet loose and creative”) and everybody compliments his work ethic (shooting pucks for hours after practice or a game) and journalists call him a “transcendent star.” everybody says he’s a great person. everybody calls him special. jordan martinook says svech never has a bad word to say about anyone.
ok it’s kitten time again!
more svech facts of note:
drives a black mercedes, poorly. “he wants to win on the road, too,” says foegs.
his voice gets very soft when he is uncertain about something but he’s loud when he wins a card game. (”GOOD NIGHT, BROTHER! SEE YOU NEXT GAME!”)
loves french toast for breakfast.
guilty pleasure is milkshakes.
if he was an animal, he’d be a bear (”like a russian bear.”)
does monster summer workouts with ivan provorov
look how fucking cute he is
the invaluable social media team over at hurricanes hq understands the svech content the world needs. i’m gonna tackle some more of this in the ship primer, but here are the best ones:
who’s your daddy? this video features svech confusedly asking “daddy?”, which is literally everything i ever want in fic or in life. once he finally understands he’s expected to choose between two teammates, he chooses the one who’s his buddy. and then after he’s catcalled from offscreen, he slouches down in his chair and changes his answer. “both,” he mutters, looking unbearably smug. “both.”
cookie face. it takes marty a very entertaining 49 seconds to eat the cookie. then svech hacks the game and wins in 7 second flat. “he’s good at everything,” marty marvels from offscreen.
this is a terrible concept for a video but it does feature svech and dougie doing the famous scene from stepbrothers, and svech giving a sweeping bow. i will forgive him for wearing a duke hat but only because he wears a tarheels hat in the three amigos video above.
has it been too long since a kitten photo? it’s definitely been too long since a kitten photo.
in conclusion, andrei svechnikov is a massive life-ruining problem and also he is perfect. i love him.

Tell me things about Svech. I just had to send a really difficult text dealing with a difficult family member. I need to think about something else.
i'm sorry i'm just responding to this now but i hope this is a nice distraction for you!!!
here are plenty of things about him! i'll put this under a read more because i could talk about svechy for hours 🫶
he came to the united states to play hockey as a 16 year old with his mom to play for the muskegon lumberjacks of the USHL, all while knowing zero english which also goes to show how dedicated and intelligent he is because his english is amazing now
he grew up in russia very poor and he and his family sometimes didn’t know if they would even have clothes or food to eat
he wants to make a better life for his parents because of this and most likely gave them his signing bonus after he signed an 8 year contract (x)
his family is the most important thing to him
his brother evgeny is also a hockey player who is currently on the winnipeg jets. andrei also wears number 37 for no other reason than it was his brother’s number
andrei has called his brother his hero many times 🥺
and that he's helped him with hockey so much and owes the lacrosse goals he's scored to evgeny first showing it to him
which by the way he is the first player in NHL history to score a michigan goal 👑
his first hockey memory was also crying because he couldn't play with his brother like!!!!!!
one of andrei's biggest dreams was to play in the NHL with his brother and they finally got to in march 2021
also have this picture of little drei in a teletubbies shirt for no reason other than it's the cutest thing i've ever seen in my entire life
his dad watches every single one of his games even though he lives in russia and it’s a 7 hour time difference so he makes coffee so he can stay up and watch andrei play 🥺
his favorite thing his mom makes is borscht which is beet soup
he loves sweets but tries to stay away from them during the season and his favorite russian candy is alenka chocolate
his favorite food that he hadn’t tried before living in the US is sweet potato fries because they quote "makes him happy and tastes good" 😭
he goes to a training camp in russia every summer which takes up all of his time and he says he doesn’t have a life because of it. waking up at 5 am and skating, working out and doing track and field in the evening which he says is his least favorite because he hates running and he’s so tired by then end of it that he goes to bed at 9 pm
he is known for being a hard worker and is very hard on himself. rod brind’amour has to tell him to go home sometimes if he’s still at the rink or in the gym. he even stays at the rink after games working on what he can do to get better:
