Season 2 Music

Listen, I know people love Abba and Taylor Swift and stuff, but.

So far the musical choices in OFMD have been in the Rock and Folk categories. The radio hits? From the 70s, or earlier.

I'm not a fan of pop, and so I've really been vibing with the actual choices -- Patti Smith? Lou Reed? fucking Moondog? And, okay, Prince, but seriously, Prince. PRINCE. Esp. "The Beautiful Ones."

I'd like to say that if a top-40 pop hit from post-1980 shows up on this soundtrack, I'll donate $100 to a New Zealand food bank. I don't know if I can swing it, but I'll try.

And, as an official Old, if Abba or Taylor Swift show up? I'll eat my hat. Once I've constructed a hat of fruit leather or perhaps toffee.

What I'm saying is, pay attention to the actual vibe, okay?

With Kavinksy showing up in the ending ceremony, I have actual hopes of Justice turning up and playing Close Call or Parade or something since all their songs were played so much during the Games

What’s everyone’s favorite singalong song?

Oooo, good question... Luz: See, the thing is, as you'd probably expect, I think Luz likes a little bit of everything, so it would depend on her mood. That said, I think they sing Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park or Rebel Rebel by David Bowie regularly. That, and she's totally doing that duet of Moving Right Along with Hunter. Amity: Easily Someone's Someone by k-pop group Monsta X. It reminds her too much of Luz. She occasionally belts out Numb by Linkin Park and Pretend We're Dead by L7. Naturally, Luz becomes her backup vocals and they sing to each other all the time, much to the annoyance of everyone. Willow: Girl has Tenacious D on lock (especially Master Exploder, and yes she does understand the lyrics.) But more than that, if Hunter's upset, she's singing a romantic song to him like Swing Life Away by Rise Against to help him feel better. And she will sing Bury the Light when she's playing video games. Hunter: This boy lives and breathes musicals, emo music, and Weird Al. I'd think that, if they're all parked for the night, he might also dance while singing, so expect him to sing 500 Miles or any Michael Jackson song. Gus: Like Hunter, total Weird Al fanboy. Also deep into singing Voltaire, but if they're parked, he's using illusion magic to amplify the song through visuals. You should see his version of the Beast of Pirate Bay. Matt: Matt doesn't really sing all that much... Except for one song, and that's Hardware Store by Weird Al, and he scares everyone by doing a perfect version of the breakdown of that song. Vee: Given how silly she can be, Bad Reputation by Joan Jett and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cindi Lauper are in her wheelhouse. She also doesn't mind going goth/punk with her Mashy. Masha: They love to sing Queen for some reason (especially Under Pressure, for many reasons,) Also, they love singing a good Punk Rock song, especially from The Clash or The Ramones.

If ya'll have never watched the music video for "Danger Zone", it's mortifying. We've just got this horrendous series of clips of Kenny Loggins flopping around on a bed interspersed with scenes from the movie. It's a horrible juxtaposition between the two, but really funny anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are supposed to be some super sexy connotations there, but it's so, so bad that I can't even see it. Song production? Fantastic. Use of the song in both movies? Glorious. OG Music video? ........ Some modern day music video maker is out there sobbing in their backyard. That's not even mentioning them showing Goose hitting the canopy for the drumbeats toward the end.

unexpectedly affecting needle drops

Does anyone else have that ONE song that they forever associate with a scene from a movie or a tv series?

I mean I've discovered multiple artists that I love from watching movies and tv shows but I know I'm not the only one that has had that moment where you can vividly recall, frame by frame, a specific scene just from hearing a song.

This is to say that I listened to run away with me by carly rae jepsen for the first time in a while and I was bowled over by the remembrance of THAT airport scene in mr. robot. Of all tv shows for a gay anthem to show up in, it actually fit quite well.

The absolute euphoria of that needle drop just as dominique and darlene are about to part ways in the airport, pure adrenaline was pumping through my veins. Hearing that saxophone riff and thinking, "man, there's no way they're going to give me a romcom running through the airport for the love of your life scene in this kind of show," and then they DID.

It's been years but I still remember standing up, hands on my hips dad-posing in front of the tv and yelling 'cause there's no way dom is gonna make it since she JUST got out of the hospital after taking an ice pick to the torso for darlene and they kept cutting to darlene anxiously trying to will dom to appear at the boarding gate while the music swells, and THEN ending with that shot of dom making it to the back of the line just as darlene slips out of view to go to the bathroom to have a panic attack—the way my euphoria took a steep dive as the realization that they were gonna miss each other settled in. I was absolutely demolished by that scene paired with that song.

It got me fuming and cussing at the tv for a while (I was so invested and felt so betrayed) but I begrudgingly accepted that it made sense for their characters once I calmed down. It set them up to heal individually before eventually coming back to each other—at least that's what I choose to believe since it was open-ended.

I really do appreciate when films and shows use unexpected songs and manage to, not only make it work, but also provoke intense emotions lol.
