unexpectedly affecting needle drops

Does anyone else have that ONE song that they forever associate with a scene from a movie or a tv series?

I mean I've discovered multiple artists that I love from watching movies and tv shows but I know I'm not the only one that has had that moment where you can vividly recall, frame by frame, a specific scene just from hearing a song.

This is to say that I listened to run away with me by carly rae jepsen for the first time in a while and I was bowled over by the remembrance of THAT airport scene in mr. robot. Of all tv shows for a gay anthem to show up in, it actually fit quite well.

The absolute euphoria of that needle drop just as dominique and darlene are about to part ways in the airport, pure adrenaline was pumping through my veins. Hearing that saxophone riff and thinking, "man, there's no way they're going to give me a romcom running through the airport for the love of your life scene in this kind of show," and then they DID.

It's been years but I still remember standing up, hands on my hips dad-posing in front of the tv and yelling 'cause there's no way dom is gonna make it since she JUST got out of the hospital after taking an ice pick to the torso for darlene and they kept cutting to darlene anxiously trying to will dom to appear at the boarding gate while the music swells, and THEN ending with that shot of dom making it to the back of the line just as darlene slips out of view to go to the bathroom to have a panic attack—the way my euphoria took a steep dive as the realization that they were gonna miss each other settled in. I was absolutely demolished by that scene paired with that song.

It got me fuming and cussing at the tv for a while (I was so invested and felt so betrayed) but I begrudgingly accepted that it made sense for their characters once I calmed down. It set them up to heal individually before eventually coming back to each other—at least that's what I choose to believe since it was open-ended.

I really do appreciate when films and shows use unexpected songs and manage to, not only make it work, but also provoke intense emotions lol.

ok i finished mr robot over a week ago so its time for me to write my little essay. (and by essay i mean uh. vaguely coherent thoughts about media on the Talking about Media website)

so, almost everyone i talk to about this show has been like "yeah i really liked the first 2 seasons but then it got crazy/i stopped watching/i never finished it." and perhaps i am at an advantage by binge watching all of it 4 years after the finale. or perhaps i love a relatable socially awkward protagonist more than they do. but i really was hooked the entire time. except! whatever the hell they did to my girl angela?? it sucked!

Angela had such cool arcs for the first 2 seasons. she was professional, talented, dealing with shitty men like a boss. seeing her take a job at ecorp and doing a whole "can you take them down from the inside or are you just complicit" arc was cool. having her as a foil to all the #hackerz but still helping them was cool. i really really loved angela's character. (i would've loved to see her with elliot by the end, but hey man idk what the consensus on that is bc i havent read online posts about this show). and then. And Then.

she gets brainwashed. there was never, in my opinion, a satisfying explanation to HOW she was brainwashed. angela is smart and independent and defiant and i'm not saying smart people can't ever get brainwashed but "whiterose showed me her machine" is really NOT a satisfying enough reason to completely destroy such a great character. we watch her betray her best friend, help with terrorism, go insane, and get killed? and there's never a satisfying reason. we never see or hear about what exactly whiterose showed her.

and then it's like she's reduced to a blurry wife and a pair of ballet slippers. when she was so cool before... i absolutely hate to see it. i waited until the show ended to write all this down because i thought we would get some closure or explanation at least, but i feel like angela did not at all get what she deserved from the show. so not cool.

anyway feel free to fight me or agree w this post - i havent gotten to discuss this show w many people & i really loved watching it so i'd love to hear what you think

do you ship domlene?

ok to be honest i dont find domlene all that interesting, but i dont hate it. i certainly enjoyed it more in s2 when it felt like cat and mouse, but i started to lose interest during s3. its not that i think the ship is bad or anything, its just not my style. i like ships that are a little more crazy, and dom is kind of a square. shes too "good" of a person for me to be interested in her lol. it felt like in a sea of characters undergoing corruption arcs (my fave thing ever), dom was always a constant espouser of "good morals": following the law, looking out for your family, trying to do the right thing. i seriously just do not find any of that compelling at all, and especially given that dom is a fed, i was even less interested.

in my dream world, dom starts off as a "good cop" but begins to resort to more and more shady methods as she gets increasingly obsessed with tracking down darlene. s2 would end with darlene getting caught, making a deal to keep her and elliot out of jail, and then continuing to work on fsociety projects behind doms back. i really liked darlenes role as a ringleader in s2, doing random PR acts like sawing the balls off the wall street bull, and i wish she had done more of that. in s3, darlene would be a double agent, giving dom bullshit information while helping elliot try to track down tyrell/stop mr robot themselves. all of this done out of their mutual distrust in the legal system to provide any justice or do anything besides serve the interest of the government, ofc. dom would start to break away from the fbi and pursue darlene more out of personal morbid interest. maybe she'd even do something that really breaks the fbi code of conduct and earn herself a suspension or something, idk. maybe she gets too close to figuring out who whiterose is and is fired for no reason, leading her to become even more suspicious and unhinged in her detective methods. just ANYTHING to complicate her morals a bit.

so to answer ur question, i think domlene is fine, but a bit boring for me, and it all stems from my lack of interest in doms character. when they hooked up in s3 and dom immediately turned herself in to the fbi for breaking the rules i was just like ugh, seriously?? i wish dom had been forced to examine the role of the fbi in state violence or how theyre so clearly owned by the rich and powerful more, but she never really got there. even in 410, shes concerned with clearing her name with the fbi. i also find it kind of hard to believe darlene would be able to put aside the fact that dom is a cop so easily lol, but what do i know.
