idk but to me something so quintessential about timothy drake is that he is your average american teenage boy and as your average teenage american boy he is viscerally and desperately terrified of loneliness. the way he latched on to every single aspect of dick's life in an attempt to be close to someone who showed him kindness as a child, the way he'll lower his distinctly bruce-wayne-shaped walls to let in young justice because once his friends know him they won't leave him, hell the way he somehow keeps up his friendship with ives despite all the times he's dropped off the radar. something about this child is such an achingly yearning beast which adores company that he rips through typical fantastical comic book angst and falls straight back into the behavior of My New Neighbor The Average American Teenage Boy in a way i don't think i consciously realized until recently

ALSO something I put on the yj server but I want to share, I’ve never really understood why it’s so upsetting to people that Bernard isn’t upset about Tim not telling him he’s Robin. Like I get it theoretically, they think it makes them boring, but I can’t see it that way. Because being a hero—being Robin—is so important to Tim, and it’s such a huge part of who he is (he doesn’t really know who he is outside of Robin) that isn’t it kinda amazing he found someone who understands that? I think it’s telling, actually, that Bernard still loves and trusts Tim wholeheartedly despite knowing he’s keeping that secret. Because he understands that yeah, sometimes the city has to come first, and yeah, it’s dangerous. He gets that better than any other civilian because he’s already had fucked up things happen to him because Tim is Robin even BEFORE they were together (Darla coming back and using him to find Tim, for example) and he’s been through enough to understand the severity of it. And he also knows Tim doesn’t want to leave him when he has to do Robin Things, but they both understand that there isn’t a choice. THATS SO INSANE TO ME because Tim found someone who understands it’s an obligation, not necessarily a choice. Tim can’t look away when people are getting hurt, and Bernard doesn’t even consider it an option. LIKE DAMN LET THE TWO LOSERS UNDERSTAND AND CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER god forbid Bernard trusts, respects, and understands his boyfriend 😭😭😭

Y'know if you think about it, the canonical fact that Tim spent his childhood in a series of Gotham City apartments rather than in a manor house in Bristol only makes the fanon concept of him following the Bats as a child make more sense.

It would be considerably easier for him to start out taking pictures or watching through binoculars out his bedroom window or off a dark penthouse balcony and gradually grow into sneaking out onto nearby rooftops and plotting his own, say, two-hour route through the area, than it would be for a child to somehow bus himself in from the fancy exburbs to the city and back multiple nights a week.

(Besides, do you know how rarely and badly public transportation runs to the suburbs, especially the fancy ones? Especially at NIGHT? NIMBYs haaaaaate public transport, the Davenports of the world almost certainly expect "the help" to have their own cars.)

Hmm

You ever think about how Tim doesn't really feel guilty about the stuff he's done? Like some of it is really fucked up. But he doesn't feel guilty about it.

Do you ever wonder if he thinks there's something wrong with him? That the spot that's supposed to remind you about guilt and "keep you in check" is just a hole that is just empty. No nagging feelings just.. quiet acceptance.

You ever think about how Jason has too much guilt? How he holds onto things that aren't even his fault and seethes and falls into the feelings until they're eating him alive. And he has to let it out somehow or he'll end up doing something even worse, but still ends up with blood on his hands.

Jason staring at his hands and seeing blood.

Tim staring at his hands and feeling nothing.

Both of them reaching out to the other and saying.

"It's okay. I'm broken too."

Tim doesn't see blood on Jason's hands, he sees scars and warmth.

Jason doesn't see Tim as lacking something, he sees confidence in who he is.

hc that the bat brothers know the exact level of violence they can get away with inflicting on one another before Bruce inevitably steps in and grounds them. just imagining them getting fed up with one another and getting into the quietest fistfights they can manage. a sprained wrist? fine. split lip? no problem. but someone always goes too far and gets too caught up in the moment, and before they know it, there is the telltale crunch of a broken bone. then they're scrambling to wipe up the blood, to pick up everything they've knocked over, apologizing profusely to the other so they don't snitch. and it doesn't matter where they are; the manor or patrolling the city. Bruce is immediately behind them demanding "Explanation. Now."

mini headcanon:

Bruce is STEM-minded. Dick does well enough in school to get by and prefers STEM, much like Bruce.

Then Jason.

Jason loves books. He loves history. Jason is as humanities-oriented as you can get in a kid. Even after he dies, his love of literature doesn't. When Dick needs to relax, he's in the gym flipping and jumping. Jason's in the garden reading.

Jason had been with Bruce for several years after adoption when he had his first public breakdown. He was at the dining table, staring at a big red F on his math exam. And he cried.

Bruce knew Jason had an inferiority complex, but to see it laid out so openly was heart-wrenching.

Tearfully, a sad Jason held up the paper and whispered, "I did my best. Dick said this class was easy. How come when you're good at English, it's only okay? How come you need to be good at math to be smart?"

And Bruce couldn't bring himself to answer.

He wanted to help Jason with math, but he was busy and Dick was busy, so Jason grit his teeth and figured it out on his own. (He barely got a C in the class.)

Later, after the resurrection, Jason is hanging around the manor when Tim rushes inside. His lip is quivering and an essay marked with a bright 63% is clutched in his hand. Instead of lording it over Tim that this one thing came easy to him, Jason sits next to him.

Jason accepts he's the English person in a room full of math geniuses. He talks Tim through the essay because he needed someone to talk him through his own school struggles.

Jason makes the decision to help his brother and Tim manages an A in the class.

And Jason is happy for him. Jason is happy for Tim in his successes and failures. He's there when Tim wins a math award, and there when Tim needs help with an essay.

Jason figured he'd be there since no one was there for him.

I was talking about this with the yj server but I’m moving it here because AGH. Every time someone calls Bernard “just a normal guy” it takes 5 years off my life span because yeah, sure, he’s a civilian, but he’s not normal. Nothing in his life has ever been normal. He has a shit home life with parents that don’t care about him, and at school, he doesn’t fit in anywhere. He’s an outcast. But he was in a school shooting and watched Darla die in front of him, and he couldn’t even fully process or grieve that because Darla came back and used him to get to Tim (and it was supposed to be funny which is the story of his life, I think). And after that, after Tim left, he joined a cult. He did that because no one accepted him as he is (because he’s queer, because he’s different, because he’s loud and opinionated and he’s never really belonged anywhere, has he) and there he was taught that pain was the only way to make things better. And, in the end, the goal was always really to die. He was happy to be a sacrifice, maybe because it gave him a purpose, but hell if I know. And he meets Tim again, and yeah, he’s not a hero, but he’s still not normal, either. He has nightmares, and he feels empty and sticky and kinda like shit without Tim (he’s the first person to accept him, the person who made him want to get out of the cult, and the only one who really accepted him), and he’s healing, but he gets KIDNAPPED. AGAIN. Strapped in next to a ticking bomb. He gets out. Tim gets him out. But he keeps a bat by his window and he’s angry. He can’t talk about the cult or any of the other fucked up things that happened to him. He just can’t. And after all that, Tim gets kidnapped too. By the same chaos monsters that took him. He saves Tim because of course he does, how could he not? He’s loyal to his core and he will never hesitate to fight if it comes to saving someone he loves. So he saves Tim, and to some degree it’s helpful to him, to start to heal, but he never really gets to heal. It’s horrible thing after horrible thing for him and none of that is normal!!
