BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Separation episode 12 & 13 review

It’s double review time for the last episodes of Bleach!

Man, the last two episodes were truly exciting ones with all the action from Zero Squad! I'm glad the animators, director, etc. decided to fully dedicate the two last episodes to Zero Squad. They all have their glorious moments which unfortunately didn't happen in the manga, so I'm glad in the manga they did.

But if anyone was badass, it was Senjumaru! So happy to finally see a badass female taking down multiple baddies in one well swoop! But if we backtrack a bit, it was still awesome to see each Zero Squad member fighting. While they were obviously playing with their Schutzstaffel (Elite/Imperial Guards) opponents (plus with Jugram and Uryuu too), it was still interesting they gave so much room for the Quincies to feel that sense of being at the top.

I think everybody can agree upon the fact Zero Squad had some interesting powers that suited well against their opponents.

It was nice how Kirio proved a stage to their battles, but in the end, also joined into the fighting mix.

Oetsu and Kirinji were both badass and while it looked like a moment Oetsu's game would be over, Kirinji proved himself as a top healer with his abilities. Which was a good thing when going against Askin.

Though the fact when Zero Squad members decided who should go against all the Elite Guards, I couldn't help but snort slightly as they sacrificed themselves to give the full power to one member reminded me of Yhwach stealing all 'non-worthy' Quincies abilities/lives... yet the difference in that was the sole fact the Zero Squad members agreed on that and made it willingly, unlike Yhwach's poor subordinates.

The fact that Yhwach just used all the Quincies below the Royal Palace (at Seireitei) as a stepping stone for him and his Elite Guards to buff it felt bad. Like yes, technically, Yhwach gave them all their powers (as far as I've understood things), but taking those and their lives? Yeah, I think if the Quincies had all known the full details of 'that' deal, they wouldn't have agreed upon it.

The pure rage and disbelief we saw on Liltotto's, Bazz-B's and Giselle's faces summarised quite well what most Quincies probably felt when they had to sacrifice themselves for their majesty.

And all for nothing, as Ichibe turned out to be too powerful toward Yhwach, even when he was at his peak... However, the fact that Ichibe named/made Yhwach a black ant made me chuckle for the future. Because if you didn't know, ants are actually very OP insects, despite the popular belief...

As a side note, Hiyori's comment at the beginning of episode 12 toward Urahara made me wonder why he is still so loyal to Seireitei. I get that it was his home for a long time and Urahara probably understands far better things than most of people, but I think Hiyori's musings were still valid. He would rather sacrifice his best friend (Yoruichi) and Ichigo and company, for the sake of Seireitei and by extension Royal Palace and Soul King. I get that they are middle of a war and sacrifices must be made, but talk about coldness. After all, Hiyori and the rest of Visored from the World of the Living arrived there just a bit late along with Yoruichi's little brother Yushiro, so if they all had gone there and helped...they would have been in much better standing against potential opponents. After all, the group that went there was quite small in numbers...so, why the rush? I get that Ichigo and company are quite powerful, but even so, now that we learned Hiyori and others did come (and were coming) felt like a bad move on Urahara's part. After all, they came there to help.

Not to mention it felt like something in Urahara had changed. I can't quite put my finger on it, but despite the fact he was still his crafty and mysterious self, there was this layer of...hmm, ruthlessness? Something like that. Not sure how to express that, but it feels like Urahara went back to being Omnitsukido's best assassin member who is on a mission and failure isn't acceptable.

Anyway! Senjumaru was truly the MVP of the last episode. I could barely hold back my excitement earlier when she was against Uryuu, because man, she looked sooo beautiful and badass when she made that wagasa (Japanese umbrella) to herself and when she released her Bankai? Talk about a huge and epic one! Her Bankai truly suited her and it was extremely pretty. Not to mention an interesting one. The way she used a cloth to trap her all opponents and defeat those before she sewed them into a cloth? What an interesting way to deal with them. It really made me admire Senjumaru even more.

That ending at the last episode...what was that? xD It really surprised me (and probably many other people) when Kon popped up and showed those few 'deleted' scenes. It was totally random, but fun all the same.

All in all, this cour (season) was a blast and it ended on an excellent high note!

He seems to think he is a scientist and the rest of the world are his test subjects. His experiments. They are not human. They are not even worth thinking about…

But she knows that is not true. Because he did think about them once upon a time.

Even if it was a very long time ago… almost to the point that the memories were blurring a little… she remembers the genuine smile he wore at times around her. The way he would hide his amusement in his eyes when she would call Shinji out on his laziness. Or the way he patiently taught her how to make a beautiful piece of artwork for Kirio in his expert penmanship. Under his guidance, she had created art.

All those memories where he had been her friend. The gifts, the laughter, the missions, the danger… they had shared so many things. He had been someone she had vowed to protect.

That is why, when they came face to face again - - she had to let him know why she wanted to kill him. He had to know. She was desperate to tell him the exact reason why she was going to kill him.

Once, Shinji had scolded her for the amount of space Aizen took in her heart. To keep thinking of him like that, even if it was out of fury- - it meant that there was no space for love to enter into her heart.

I am a bit tired of callouts nowadays. About the only times you'll honestly see me reblog a callout is if/when I genuinely find the person incredibly problematic — especially if I've fallen victim from them firsthand. Otherwise it's going to be a hit or miss. Any callout posts I reblog will be tagged as CALLOUT TW and DRAMA TW for ease of mind. Now if the person makes a public apology and acknowledges their mistakes then I'll be more than happy to talk to them again depending on what all they've done.

I refuse to interact with problematic muns. If you are racist, ableist, sexist, LGBT-phobic, and a Nazi bootlicker then I want nothing to do with you. However, the same is equally true if you refuse to acknowledge how problematic many character (such as The Joker) are then I also want nothing to do with you. The reason for this is because fiction is the only real way for people to learn just how problematic people truly are in the real world.

I’m stuck using BETA TEXT EDITOR + XKIT REWRITTEN. I can’t use LEGACY TEXT EDITOR at all because I made this blog after November 26th, 2022. I know this might sound a bit brash but I'd greatly appreciate it if you used BTE with me otherwise I'm probably not going to interact with you until everyone’s forced to use BTE.

I only interact with mutuals who are 18+. Though I am perfectly fine with non-mutuals sending headcanon asks, anonymous asks, and chatting with me OOC. Otherwise, I’m only going to interact with mutuals IC. It just makes my dash cleaner and easier to deal with.

Memes, unprompted asks, open starters, and dash commentaries are the best way to interact with me. I’ve come to learn that I get bored / lose motivation quite easily and rather quickly when doing starter calls. So I prefer sending / receiving unprompted asks, memes, and making open starters as well as replying to them. Now if we plan on doing a specific thread or something then that’s one thing. So I will very seldom if ever be making starter calls and / or like my mutuals’ starter calls because of how easily bored and uninterested I get with them early on.

I do practice mains & exclusives. Though I am extremely picky with whom I become mains or exclusives with due to bad experiences in the past. The number of dupes I will have of one character is up in the air right now so I'll stick with two to three mains per character for the time being.

SHIBA ROLES & SHIHŌIN MOTIVES

I was talking with @mysteriousshopkeeper​​ and something interesting came up. The Shihōin have a de facto key to the Royal Realm in the form of the “Tenshiheisō”, as noted in The Tenshiheisōban. (Based on how it’s used, it probably functions sort of like the transportation rings in Stargate in actual practice.)

Meanwhile, the Shiba have a map of how to get to the Royal Realm and its defenses, as Ganju shows us in chapter 598:

Ganju says right here that Zero Division gave Kūkaku the map when she shot them back up. But stop and think about how nonsensical this is for a moment. Zero Division comes down in the Tenchuren, their transport, in chapter 516. We get told in chapter 518, when they’re returning to the Royal Realm, that:

From this we can say that the Kakaku Taihō and the Tenchuren were made to work together, as the odds of them just happening to be compatible by random chance are absurdly low. They must thus both be about as old as each other. This very strongly suggests Kūkaku didn’t make the Kakaku Taihō. Kirio had already met up with Zero Division and left, and there’s only one guaranteed way back up. (As an aside, perhaps when Zero Division deal with Menos, they also come down and leave using the Senkaimon?)

Given all of this, when Ganju says that Zero Division gave Kūkaku a map, it seems likely he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. The cannon has already been used for this same purpose at least once before, meaning the Shiba have very likely already been in possession of a map. While it may be true that Zero Division gave Kūkaku another map, just in case, the Shiba have surely had maps for ages as they’ve been responsible for sending Zero Division back for who knows how long. This suggests that a primary responsibility of the Shiba was serving as transporters.

So, if the Shiba have the means to send someone up to the Royal Realm and are officially responsible for this, why do the Shihōin have their own key and possible means of getting up there? Why don’t they just ride up using the Shiba’s method if they have some reason to go up there? (Like, say, officially “consecrating” their “heavenly” artifacts?) If they were officially invited, they’d need no such thing. It would only be necessary if they weren’t invited.

One could just as readily ask why they have an artifact ready to go which seems to be explicitly made to break the Sōkyoku. They seem to have a thing for contingency planning and backdooring the works of others.

COMPARATIVE POWER

When the faux Kakaku Taihō which the SRDI built is used to send Yoruichi and Ichigo’s party up to the Royal Realm, Kisuke notes in chapter 589:

It’s notable that he calls it the Shiba family’s cannon, and not Kūkaku’s (unlike Ichigo, who doesn’t know any better). It’s also notable that Kūkaku is able to use the actual Kakaku Taihō with just a Kidō spell (albeit a seemingly rather dangerous one). As we see, it requires a massive and exotic energy input to mimic this using the faux cannon:

(An open question here is why go to the SRDI to use the faux cannon with a convoluted firing process rather than going to the actual cannon, especially when Ganju winds up tagging along meaning the Shiba know of and presumably condone the mission? Why was the actual cannon unavailable?)

When the second trip up using the “Tenshiheisō” is launched in chapter 612, we see the same thing of a massive amount of energy being required, which must ultimately be augmented with Mayuri’s technology:

We know from the example of the Shiba using the Kakaku Taihō with a mere Kidō spell that it is unlikely that the Shihōin need to assemble so much reiryoku as this to use the “Tenshiheisō” themselves. This strongly suggests the Shiba and Shihōin, and likely all the Great Noble Clans, are qualitatively different in power, not just quantitatively. (It also outright demonstrates that even the greatest minds of Soul Society can barely rival their achievements, and then only much more inefficiently.) And we were, in effect, already told this:

What they do is as easy for them as breathing. I’ve stated before that the achievements of Yoruichi, Isshin, and Kūkaku are comparatively unique, as seen here and here, and I think that these technical achievements demonstrate yet further that what (at least some of the members of) the Great Noble Clans are capable of is novel compared to all other Shinigami barring Aizen, Kenpachi, and maybe Yamamoto. (I’ve also said before that Yūshirō is clearly immaturely developed, the same is obviously true of Ganju, and Byakuya is just beginning to finish his maturation. Ichigo is clearly unique, but Kūkaku’s surprise at his output is probably best accounted for as recognition of potential.)

SPECIAL ABILITIES

The point of The Tenshiheisōban was to essentially argue that the Shihōin are uniquely durable (to the point of being nigh unkillable) and that this (combined with their historical role in the creation of Soul Society) grants them special privileges. In other words, their status is not purely political or historical: they very clearly have the reiryoku and the ability (not just technically, but innately) to back it up.

I don’t think they’re alone. Consider the Shiba. Kūkaku and Isshin are clearly very strong in their own right, given their respective abilities to keep the core of Xcution in line (with Ginjō and Tsukishima being insanely strong in their own ways) and to go toe-to-toe with Aizen. But we also see plenty of strange abilities on the part of the Shiba.

There’s Ganju’s earth magic, which is clearly not the same as Kidō. There’s Ganju’s trick for using Kidō which he discloses to Ichigo. There’s Kūkaku’s launch Kidō which requires dimensional energy to rival. There’s the mystery of the construction of the Kakaku Taihō itself, which the SRDI can’t replicate, and its Reishūkaku cannonballs which allow the comparatively weak Ryoka to defeat the Shakonmaku forcefield of the Seiretei (and Royal Realm’s!) Sekkiseki defenses. There’s Kaien’s prodigy status. There’s Isshin’s never-explained Final Getsuga Tenshō. And there’s Ichigo, even if he is a unique phenomenon and not just a product of the Shiba.

Taken as a whole, if the Shihōin’s special ability seems to be related to power or durability, then the Shiba’s special ability seems to be related to potential. They seem to have some innate knack for unlocking new abilities and developing them in unique ways.

These two examples would suggest that there are unique abilities possessed by the other three Great Noble Clans as well. If so, that raises a question: which came first, their dismemberment of the Soul King, or their abilities? Did the ancestors of the Great Noble Clans set out to impose their will upon the Soul King because they were already powerful, or did they somehow gain most of their powers from doing so?

If it was the former, where did these abilities come from in the first place? If it was the latter, why was it them and not some other random group of people who managed it?

I wanted to elaborate on something I alluded to in tags last night -- this past year of roleplay being humbling -- because I kept thinking about it.

When I left the Bleach RPC on a two-year hiatus back in 2017, I think I had a pretty inflated opinion of my muse. I really did see him as a character that was unequivocally impressive and likeable... and I suppose there’s a contingent of the fandom that shares those views. 

But here’s the thing: Urahara Kisuke himself does not overestimate his own abilities or appeal. That’s why he canonically recruits and develops talent that he himself does not possess. He’s aware of his limitations; he’s aware of his imitations. Consider that a number of his inventions are really copies or spin-offs of someone else’s. He did not invent the artificial soul; Hikifune Kirio did. He did not invent the healing hot spring; Kirinji Tenjirō did. He did not invent the gigai; someone else (probably in Fourth Division) did. He probably did not invent the Tenshintai; someone in the Shihōin Vault probably did. And so on. His work is often derivative, and what he doesn’t know, he doesn’t know; he is quite capable of being surprised or overlooking important facts that someone else might catch.  He’s not even certain his solutions will work. What he’s great at doing is adapting things to special purposes, integrating the work of others, and planning and designing for failure cases. But all this is just the mark of a good engineer. If there’s a flaw here, it’s in believing that every problem does have a solution, and that it’s up to him to find it.

But he does have flaws, and since coming back, that’s what’s been most interesting to me as the writer to explore. Now, I’ll admit to how painful it has sometimes been to step into his shoes and take on the weight of having let down people he cares about, the frustration of not knowing how to fix his past mistakes, and the realization that some things are simply beyond his ability to fix, both in the personal and technical realm. It makes me feel things. His failure to impress people has made me feel things. So if he’s been a little less manic and comedic, a little more down-to-earth this time around -- that’s why.

Nevertheless, it’s been interesting to pry open these little cracks in the façade and explore what lies beneath. He’s on a journey now to risk more of himself and stop hedging his bets quite so much, at least in the personal realm. I will admit: it’s been a journey for me to let go of this need to impress people with my muse. We roleplayers all see the character we write as the main character in our stories, don’t we? And I think there’s a degree to which we all want to play the hero. And insofar as his need to impress was really a me problem, it’s been healthy and helpful to divest us of that. There’s still a large part of his personality that will always be a fixer, and he will no doubt always be looking to solve problems that may be beyond the scope of his abilities. But at this point, I’m here to see my canonically supporting character become a little more supportive.

I should of know he wasn't feeding you properly... those wanna be cooks the royals lend to the guards aren't anywhere near my level. Come by any time and I'll make you a feast! Though I may ask for another generous donation of life energy." Kirio said her swollen belly jiggling from a sudden kick. "Don't forget to train like I said! This food is worth nothing if you don't put it to good use." She warned before taking a swig from a large bowl of soup.

"Hmph maybe now she'll be able to pull her own weight... if she can even pull at all." Tobiume scoffed as she poked her fattened master's stomach. Momo's zanpakuto was hardly impressed with her newly gained girth.
