"Friends." Daniel echoes, like he had to try the label on for size as a means to describe the man before him. It didn't feel right, not the lump in his throat or the sensation that lodged in his chest at seven letters that managed to vanquish everything they had meant to one another and distill it down to something foreign.
"Were we ever friends?"

"look, i know what happened between us wasn't ideal... but i don't wanna hurt each other anymore." if peace was the only way for sebastian to be in their life, he would have to try it out. even if he knew his feelings ran too deep to wither away with time. "i'd like to try being friends."

DANIEL CARTWRIGHT + CATHERINE CARTWRIGHT.
cont. from here.
@prxcticalmxgic
While Catherine provides a snapshot of their beginnings and middles, Daniel is only just about listening. Half There Danny had always been a moniker their mother had thrown his way when he spaced out during the worst of her cycles, which was infinitely more palatable than when she affectionately called him thick.
( That one was worse because he knew she sincerely believed it. )
He knows he’s not stupid, he’s almost certain he never has been, but he finds himself doubting that in moments like this. He had sincerely thought Clare was doing better, that’s what she told him, it seemed like she really meant it. With a drifting look over his shoulder to the kitchen that separated them in the conservatory to where their younger sister was passed out on the sitting room couch, he can’t unhear the sound of their mother’s voice rattling around his skull again.
It’s only when Catherine makes it personal does he snap back into the room, back into the conversation, making direct eye contact with her.
“Lay off of Lucy.” He’s not making a request, which he knows will go down like a lead balloon with his older sister, but if he can’t take a stand for his marriage then he fears he might live out his life on his knees. The hollowness that she spoke of was caused predominantly by him, and he knew that. He’s always been an empty boy, a hollowed out repercussion of everything they had lived through but he had convincingly shown himself as something closer to a whole person when Lucy had ended up in his life. Just enough to get her up an aisle, but not quite enough to cement over the cracks that appeared as quickly as it took to say I do.
“I’m sick of you -- I’m sick of the both of you -- thinking you can take the piss out of my marriage when you’re in a long-term relationship with the West Yorkshire Police force and Clare’s seeing anyone who can help her score.”
It’s a nasty truth but it’s a truth nonetheless, and for once Daniel’s committed to being all there even if he’s sure the conversation won’t bode well for him.
While he’s there, he says what he knows the pair of them have been shying away from during the too-many-times they’ve found themselves in this exact situation.
“Think we both know but don’t want to be the one to say it that the worst’ll be when it’s not a call from the station, it’s from the hospital and instead of bailing her out we’re going to be burying her. And I hate myself for even thinking it let alone saying it, but is that worse than how she’s living? If you can even call it that.”

MUSE President Defends Heteronormative Gender Stereotypes In Upcoming Production of Guys & Dolls, Saying “It’s Hilarious”

MUSE President Defends Heteronormative Gender Stereotypes In Upcoming Production of Guys & Dolls, Saying “It’s Hilarious”
Sydney University Musical Theatre Ensemble (MUSE) president Daniel Baykitch has responded to criticism that the society’s upcoming 2022 production of Guys and Dolls employs heteronormative gender stereotypes by stating, “Yeah. But it’s hilarious.”
The production team has brushed off criticism for casting leading roles Nathan Detroit (Oscar Seifried), Miss Adelaide (Claudia Redolfi), Sky Masterson (Tavis Bancroft), and Miss Sarah Brown (Belinda Thomas) based purely on talent and ability demonstrated during the audition process, without any apparent concern for increasing non-binary gender diversity.
Other major characters such as Nicely-nicely Johnson (Louis Vinciguerra), Benny Southstreet (Jesse Donaldson-Jarrett), Rusty Charlie (Kieren Gregory) and Big Jule (Graham Stoney) also appear to have been awarded based on merit without any attempt to address historical injustices that occurred long before any of them were born.
“It’s a musical comedy classic,” said Producer Gayathri Kathir, adding that they were just trying to put on a fun show for everyone and didn’t think gender would be such an issue for a comedy about how the two traditional genders traditionally related in the 1950s.
Director William Rogut pointed out that several cast members who did not identify as male were nevertheless cast in roles traditionally played by men, including Harry The Horse (Georgia Togher) and General Cartwright (Maggie Hartsuyker). “They’re doing a brilliant job of it too,” he said, while adding that casting Avide Avernathie (Andrew Smallbone) was obviously anti-ageist, as if this were somehow sufficient to satisfy the modern woke agenda.
Assistant director Daniel Sirmai highlighted the integrity of the casting process saying, “This is the best cast MUSE has assembled for any production of Guys and Dolls all year!”
When it was pointed out to choreographer Sophie Highmore that the Hotbox dancers (Lisa Kanatli, Johanna Kleinert, Paris Freed, Georgia Simic, and Caitlin Whiter) are all beautiful stereotypical cis females, she responded, “Yes, and their dancing is amazing!”
Musical director Kevin Wang pointed out that the show has arguably the best score of any Broadway musical. “That’s why I wanted to do it,” he said, adding that the rich dissonant harmonies of the crap shooter songs contrasting with the consonance of the mission tunes has stood the test of time.
Assistant musical director Rachael Pearson agreed, pointing to the lack of gender dysphoria in the show’s beautiful melodies.
Costume designer Caroline Xie said that the use of traditional heteronormative 1950’s costume styling is actually a positive thing, because it avoids confusing the audience and prevents characters being misgendered. “Nobody likes being misgendered,” she added.
Ensemble members Jack Fahd, Bonnie Fitzgerald, and Alice Kotowicz dismissed the controversy by saying that the rehearsals were so much fun that the show is bound to be a hit, while the actor playing Lt. Brannigan (John Vrionis) simply said, “I never saw crap shooters spend so much time in a Mission!”
Nevertheless, critics suggested that the inclusion of only two traditional genders and the focus on heterosexual attraction in the original 1930’s story by Damon Runyon, 1950 script by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows displayed a distinct lack of cultural foresight. The fact that the show is hugely entertaining in the way it deals with universal themes of love, loss, and redemption, and its parallels to Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet is no excuse.
Socialist Alliance have criticised MUSE for employing a capitalistic monopoly by charging money for tickets and making them available though only one vendor. “We’ve got to fund the show somehow, and at only $40 for adults or $35 for students the tickets are a bargain,” said MUSE secretary India Wilson adding, “At only $28 a ticket, I’m sure the socialists would love to make a group booking. That’s way cheaper than overthrowing the government.”
Gender diversity advocates have suggested that the best way to protest Guys and Dolls’ egregious assault on modern thinking is to buy all the tickets and stack the seats with your friends having robust ego integrity, to avoid any snowflakes being triggered by the show’s patriarchal suggestion that whatever a man does, “The guy’s only doing it for some doll.”
Whether MUSE will get away with this offensive act simply by putting on a show that’s hilarious and hugely entertaining remains to be seen. Find out for yourself by going along.
MUSE at USYD presents: Guys and Dolls 12th – 15th October 2022 ARA Darling Quarter Theatre Buy your tickets here. Let your friends know by RSVP on Facebook.
GUYS AND DOLLS A Musical Fable of Broadway Based on a story and characters of Damon Runyon Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser Book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling Licensed exclusively by Music Theatre International (Australasia). All performance materials supplied by Hal Leonard Australia
Note: All the quotes in this article are made up. The people cited are all real, but they never actually said them. The show is also real, and the cast really are amazing. Go see it.

Black Creators Matter (updated 7/2/2020)
I may be a perfume blog, but that doesn’t mean I can’t affect change.
I’ve gone through and collected a list of black-owned fragrances and fragrance stores (the stores component can likely be fleshed out more, please DM me for inclusion on the list!). This list is Western-market centric, and certainly does not represent any brands outside of North America/Europe; the reason for this is that I could not find mention of black fragrance brands outside of these regions (again, would love to have more representation here).

What’s more - if they offer (reasonably priced - your beloved author is not a person of inordinate amounts of wealth) samples yours truly will buy them and review them!
You, like me, might be thinking: “Gee, there seem to be a dearth of black perfumers!”
~It’s unfortunately true, from my research~
There is virtually no reason why an art where no one can tell the creator’s ethnicity (save possibly fragrant references to cultural or geographical information) should belong in the ivory tower!

Some of the characters are properly named in Making Waves: A Song Cycle, but not in the show’s programme, so I’ll keep faith with its producers and stick to what’s listed. Man 1 (Christopher Burgess) is the main narrator. I happen to know someone rather like Man 1, who tells me he likes to sit in, say, Green Park, and ‘watch people’, meaning to say he likes to observe people’s behaviour. I actually did this with him once, and sitting in an uncomfortable deck chair, for which there is a hire charge, all I could see were a group of tourists queuing for a sightseeing bus, another queue of Londoners queuing at a Transport for London bus stop, and others sat down having a picnic or just taking time out from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
Both my friend and Man 1 are infinitely more perceptive than I am, perhaps from their repeated and persistent observations. Man 1 talks about a couple he sees every day at a coffee shop, and in talking about their lack of variety in afternoon refreshment, he fails to realise he is guilty of the same thing. He more than redeems himself in some philosophical musings, particularly at the very start of the show, when the full company considers the relative shortness of life.
Just when the lack of actor-musicianship was getting surprisingly refreshing, in a world where song-heavy shows almost inevitably involve at least someone picking up a musical instrument (and, ultimately, why not?), Man 4 (Michael Dahl Rasmussen) almost orders the keyboardist (Daniel Cartwright) off-stage at one point for ‘I Can’t Write Love Songs’, which contained some highly morally dubious opinions, but only served to underline the song’s title. The dark humour was much appreciated by the audience.
Making Waves Company
Given the description in the show’s programme about this show “encapsulating the thoughts and feelings of everyday people in the hurdles of everyday life”, it’s slightly surprising quite how many of the numbers in this song-cycle concentrate on falling in and out of love. Where are the songs about things like commuting, standing in line at the Post Office, having to dodge ‘charity muggers’ on the capital’s streets, and those wretched self-service machines in supermarkets? The musical Title of Show has a hilarious song called ‘Filling Out The Form’, for instance, and then there’s that glorious showtune about a harrowing dream, ‘Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat’ from Guys and Dolls. More of that sort of thing would fit the hilarious nature of some of the proceedings. It’s when the show does humour that it shines brightest.
What brought the house down at the performance I attended was ‘Ginger’s Lament’, in which Man 2 (Taylor Rettke) almost has a nervous breakdown when describing all the derogatory terms he’s had to put up with. This proved somewhat educational and enlightening, at least for me: I’d never heard the term ‘burning bush’ in a ‘down below’ context before! Elsewhere, a performer would struggle a little on occasion with hitting every note required in a song, which demonstrates the sheer challenge set before them – this show is hardly a walk in the park.
Despite the disparate nature of the show – most, if not all, the performers play more than one character – it was never difficult to establish what sort of person each character was. I wasn’t at any point confused about setting, despite a set that did not change all that much during proceedings. Woman 2 (Abby Restall) performs ‘Fooling Myself’ excellently, while an earlier number, Friendzone, sees Man 1 and Man 4 taking a very different and joyous approach to the usual miserable response to being stood up.
Overall, the show isn’t exactly flawless, but it’s nonetheless an enjoyable and enchanting experience.

Open to: Anyone (Mun, Muse, FC must be 21+) Plot: Your muse is attending a gala (could be her date, a guest/stranger, could be her paid escort because she really hasn't had time to date until this year or two) and is stopped by my muse to help get tidied up before walking in, but your muse makes her extra nervous. Muse: Joan Delmore (Danielle Galligan FC), 31, is a neurologist and nepobaby. | Can change to her sister Catherine (Lucy Boynton FC)
"You can't go in there like that." Joan's tone was more flat than concerned as she stepped into their path and personal space. Every gala a Delmore attended or a Cartwright hosted was full of the judgmental elite. She was used to it, having grown up amongst them. Luckily, her parents, members of two of the wealthiest families in the world, had been level-headed. Each of Nate and Diana's children were raised to do what they loved, do it well, and to help others. Joan- or Joey as she was lovingly called by the few in her inner circle, was representing the family at the gala raising funds for the Cartwright clinics, that provided top tier medical care for patients at no cost. She was growing exceedingly nervous about her speech, her hands shaking as she reached up and adjusted their hair. "All better... perfect really..." Joan paused, eyeing them. "Maybe too perfect? Maybe you should mess it up a little again."

Thread Tracker
Last Updated: 30 July 2022
Note 1: I only went back a month or to whatever was on the last thread tracker, so if you want to keep something that is older than that, please let me know. I will still and forever be the slowest replier in all of time, so I’m happy to keep threads. I also probably missed something in the process of making this tracker, so just lmk.
Note 2: I know some of the threads are finished, I plan to go back and cross more of them off. I just like having them linked so I can go back to them as a reference due to my memory loss. Seriously, don’t think I expect you to respond to the older shit, I just love our pairings 💙
Note 3: Click here to find my open starters, which are open for all eternity.
Note 4: Tumblr is trash and this post must be viewed on dash for the links to work but on the blog to see cross offs for shelved/closed threads.
